Does anybody else remember Pandora? Not the box, or the fictional planet where James Cameron's blue alien cat people live where there's a literal mineral called "unobtanium" that can only be harvested from that particular planet. My man literally called that shit "unobtanium," fucking portmanteau of "unobtainable" and the "-ium" suffix for newer elements. No. That has absolutely nothing to do with anything else I'm writing beyond this point. This is a post about music.
This is a post about the customizable internet radio station Pandora. And also it's going to briefly cover ClickRadio, it's going to talk about my experiences with YouTube Music, Spotify, my own iPod and how I find and listen to music, and how it's a core part of my creative process and I put a bunch of music references in pretty much all of my creative work. None of it being musical, by the way. I can barely carry a tune and I can't play any instruments more complicated than a kazoo.
It also got really long and rambly, look, I'm high, I'm sorry. You've been warned.
It's 2001. I'm in high school. My life looks like this drawing I made a few weeks ago.
Tumblr media
Music is a big part of my life. The internet was a lot slower. It would take several minutes to download an .mp3 file of a song that was only about three and a half minutes long, so I would listen to the radio a lot. But the thing about listening tuning into radio is that it's not the internet. You can't pick which song to listen to whenever you want. If you want that, your best bet is to own the songs you want on their physical CD releases, or risk exposing your mom's computer to a million viruses. But in order to skip a song, you have to press a physical button to skip a song. And of course, if you're listening to the radio where you can discover new songs, you can't skip the latest Limp Bizkit or Disturbed track with the vain hope that maybe they'll play "One-Armed Scissor" by At The Drive-In or "Go With the Flow" by Queens of the Stone Age, or any single off of Kid A. Everything you hated the most, hated more than Britney Spears or the Backstreet Boys, was all lumped together under the formless "alternative rock" label, which weirdly included hip-hop artists like Eminem, House of Pain, Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill, Gorillaz and Outkast; all stuff that I guess radio stations looked at and thought "yeah, this can appeal to white people."
You know I heard Dynamite Hack's version of "Boyz N The Hood" before I ever heard Eazy-E's? That should be a crime. That should be considered a human right's violation. Fuck you, Dynamite Hack for introducing the entire world to the concept of ironic hipster covers hip-hop songs which led to the fucking white people with ukeleles versions of Tupac songs. I am so glad that we, as a society, have all come together against these dynamite hacks and decided this was cringe and something that belongs in the past.
But this isn't an essay on awful YouTube music trends of the early 2010's, this is listening to music in the internet age in the early 2000's.
In 2001, ClickRadio launched. It was a desktop application that allowed you to listen to radio stations via the internet, but it had something real radio stations did not; if a song like, say, Dynamite Hack's cover of "Boys N The Hood" came on, you could click a thumbs down button and it would let out this cartoonishly loud "thud" and then that station would never play that song for you again. And if they played a song you really liked? You could click a thumb's up button and it would play that song more often.
I cannot understate how fucking mindblowing an idea this was in the early 2000's. Yes, ClickRadio would slow down your computer as the Neopets Flash games you would play gringing for Neopoints to get a Halloween brush for your Lupe that you named after a member of your favorite band. Anybody else do that?
No? Just me? Okay then.
ClickRadio would quickly get enshittificated, within only about a year or two being filled with more and more unskippable ads. I went back to just loading up MP3s in Winamp and playing music that way by the time I was in college, but it was a pain having to listen to whatever song I had physically on my hard drive, or a few years later, going to YouTube to see if somebody uploaded a crusty version of a NoMeansNo song with a Spanish-speaking DJ speaking in the opening bits of the video. Not ideal.
But then Pandora showed up.
I don't remember where I first heard about Pandora, but after Napster, there were a bunch of music start-ups hoping to be legitimate in the eyes of artists and record labels. Clickradio was just a radio station. But Pandora... was an experiment of The Algorithm.
You see, Pandora started what is known as the Music Genome Project, a way of organizing music into hundreds of different subgenres across five large umbrella genres; Pop/Rock, Hip Hop/Electronica, Jazz, World Music and Classical. What Pandora did was use this as a way to allow users to craft their own custom radio stations. And not only would it play the stuff you liked, but it would be tailored to a seed artist or song; you put in Nirvana, you get a lot of 90's alt rock radio faire, but then maybe it plays Mudhoney. Maybe it plays Sonic Youth. Maybe it plays Melvins, and you like it. And when you give a thumbs up, you hear more and more artists in similar subgenres. And let's say you've been looking into obscure or underground music for years before you start using Pandora, and suddenly you're introduced to artists you never would have come across more organically. And buddy, you'd bet my Pandora station was a fucking hodgepodge of hundreds of seeds, which allowed me to discover highly influential /mu/ core bands like Swans, Animal Collective and Neutral Milk Hotel, but also bands that are so obscure that their Spotify listens are in the lower four digits at maximum and maybe a couple tens of thousands of views on YouTube. So many songs I found through Pandora are from bands that I very rarely hear a lot of people talk about, but they've made songs that have just lived in my brain for decades.
And for a couple years, I'd be listening to Pandora radio while writing up new TF2 fanfiction to terrorize TF2chan with. Certain songs would come up so often because I specifically bookmarked them. I didn't really know a lot about shoegaze before Pandora, but now I own a physical copy of all three of Slowdive's albums, and you fucking bet "When the Sun Hits" was in heavy rotation while I was writing Respawn of the Dead.
youtube
Yes, this was playing while I was writing out Respawn of the Dead, chapter by chapter. And so was "Beautiful Plateau" by Sonic Youth, "The Sound" by Swans, "Dead Flag Blues" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor and "End of the Line" by Murder By Death. And also this song by a band called The Clock Work Army, which split up and reformed into another band called Calico Horses, and I know this because I found this out while trying to track down a song that would play constantly on my Pandora station and it has, as of writing this sentence, 2,588 listens. And it might have more by the time you read this because I might just put it on loop because oh my god, I love this song so much, it hits so perfect for me, why don't more people know about this song?
It's not on YouTube, where I usually tend to listen to music, since I'll go through a rotation of songs that I call "work songs." I put on music while I write, and some songs are just so perfect that I can listen to them on loop with a very select number of songs that just never, ever get old for me. My neurons in my brain light up as though I was hearing it again for the first time.
Swans, Sigur Ros and The Dillinger Escape Plan are all artists who I found through Pandora that I've had the privilege to see live. By the time I was just discovering bands because I had a bunch of friends and mutuals with similar taste in music to mine, Pandora was slowly getting more and more ads. It was getting to the point where the free service would, if you were lucky, play only three or four songs before playing an ad. And when the length of those songs can span anywhere from less than three minutes for much of my beloved 80's and early 90's punk, to up to a half an hour for post-rock, noise, or ambient music. And the number of ads that played between songs had increased. What was just one every half an hour or so was now two to three for what could potentially be only after seven minutes of music. Pandora really doesn't like it if the music you like includes a lot of songs that are longer than an episode of The Simpsons.
I never hear anybody talk about Pandora anymore. Spotify is THE name in internet music streaming, and it favors listens of entire albums and other people's playlists. I don't like Spotify; sometimes I just want a specific song from a specific album. I could make a playlist of these "work songs," but I like when YouTube notices that I'm listening to music, and in the recommendeds, there's another song that I've listened to on repeat. Why yes, I would like you to play "Classical Homicide" by Dälek for me again. What's that? An hour loop of Deadmau5's "Professional Griefers" featuring Gerard Way? Yes please. I apologize for nothing. That dude's way better than Skrillex.
God, do you guys remember the Deadmau5/Skrillex shipping that was all over Tumblr in the early 2010's. I remember it. I remember it so hard. Everybody shipping them and the members of Daft Punk, posting Steam Powered Giraffe (blech) and Die Antwoord (lol) on my dashboard. In Die Antwoord's defense, they had some pretty funny music videos.
I got AdBlocker for YouTube, so the ads aren't a problem there. I mean, I could make a playlist for Spotify of my go-to songs, but I'd have to deal with ads. And there's something nice about YouTube's robots that sell my precious data to faceless corporations at least having the courtesy to be like "You look like you could use another stream of 'Anything (Viva!)' by Foetus. Or Scraping Foetus off the Wheel. Or... whatever, fuck it, it's J.G. Thirwell's band, okay? It's the guy that does the music for Venture Brothers."
Foetus was introduced to me through a friend but it was Pandora serving me up more of their music that made their albums "nail" and "Flow" ones that got the honor of Being Downloaded onto my iPod so I can Listen to This in my Car. I still use my iPod and even if there's albums that I haven't gone back to in years on there, I like having them there. I haven't listened to the soundtrack for Panty and Stocking in ages but having access to it so that I can FLY AWAY NOW, FLY AWAY NOW, FLY AWAAAYYYY on a long drive? I like having that option.
I still buy CDs so I can burn albums onto my iPod. My iPod doesn't have ads and switching between artists doesn't mean I have to flip through a CD binder. I also try to buy albums off of Bandcamp. Especially for smaller artists, or artists whose work I love enough to want to give them my money. I don't want to listen to ads. It throws off my workflow, shakes me out of the trance-like state that is pure, focused creativity. Whether it's working on comics or thinking about things I want to do in those comics, I'm usually listening to music. Sometimes the same album, hundreds of times over. I admit I haven't listened to that much King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, but I've listened to Nonagon Infinity front to back more times than I can count.
Nowadays it feels like I don't have a lot of friends who share my taste in music. I've so fully entrenched myself in fandom circles that I've been exposed to the average person's taste in music and I'm like "oh yeah, most people aren't as big of a fucking nerd about this as you are." You know how hard it is to get people who aren't music nerds to get into The Residents? Everybody I know that likes them already knew about them before we met, and people who had never heard of them before they met me usually find them deeply weird and never get fucking obsessed with them like I have. I own a physical copy of, not their original version of their album The King and Eye, which is an entire album of them covering Elvis that sounds like this, but the fucking remix of that album that does shit like this to their covers of Elvis songs. And you know what? I love both versions, but that remix of their cover of "Surrender" is a work song.
Listening to music is the only way I can guarantee that I'm actually working on something and not playing with my phone. I guess what I'm saying is... it sure would be nice if Pandora existed like it did back then right now.
Especially because I stopped cleaning up a page of my horrible Deltarune fan comic (MASSIVE Dead Dove warning, not even kidding, the entire story hinges on some very upsetting topics) just to write all this down and make sure there were links to every song in this essay. And like... I've even used the comic as a not-so-clandestine way into tricking them into listening to my music before. Whether it be directly namedropping bands and songs, writing about a specific character's taste in music and using that in the story somehow, or literally just making the title of one of my comic installments... this.
Tumblr media
It is really good. 686 listens on YouTube. Absolutely criminal. And the example above? That's me not putting in hundreds of references into the comic and wondering if anybody else has noticed them.
I guess what I'm saying is that I am a huge music nerd, even though I always feel like I'm getting into artists super late (unless they're like Death Grips, but that was only after The Money Store had come out), but I fucking hate Spotify. I want more physical releases that can be preserved digitally, and I don't have the money to get into collecting vinyls as a hobby. All the vinyl I own is toys, and uh... I own a lot of those.
Thank you for reading through pure, uncut music autism mixed in with nostalgia and griping about capitalism because that's apparently where my head is at all the time when I'm not daydreaming my little stories or making up video essays in my head that will never be made. That's why I do stream of consciousness Tumblr essays full of minute details that absolutely are not necessary, but this is how my goddamn ADHD brain works. Now you know what it's like to be in my Discord server.
Tumblr media
That post is, of course, pinned in the music channel.
As it should be.
... Fuck Pandora, I don't even fuck with it no more, I miss Grooveshark, weh, my playlist on that site was eight hours long before they shut it down in 2014. Devastated. I was in the middle of using it when it went offline.
Okay now I'm done for real, sorry.

I realise I've shared Sezha without actually Sharing Sezha so behold, my boy
I've been having so much fun with this section of the lair, and I am a lore / story-building lair despite the actual lack of public lore, so have some rambles regarding him and his section of the lair below as I scream into the void about him q wq
warning: this is a hot mess of rambles
The acolytes are all 'new age' beasties compared to the rest of the lair, so younger sprites with smaller energy than the wizened elementals or eldritch critters from Oasis or Deepwoods. They first emerged from the far roots of the Deepwoods, tainted by the magics of the Solstice Trio, and as such are still bound to lands corrupted by the forest above. They're cave-dwelling creatures with albinistic traits, but all streaked with peacock tones from Solstice influence. As a whole, they're quick to act and quick to forgive, often tumbling into wild tousles out of nowhere due to some innate itch.
They're primal in a way that defies their age, acting on core instinct above logic at most times. The entire lair is curated by their instincts as well, tunnels burrowed to keep nails and sometimes teeth in shape due to their specific diet ( tainted fungi and roots from the forest ) causing some reactions to some reverting to more beastly forms than they started. Most of the Acolytes spend their time... pretty much having the time of their lives. Short lives, but still. They curate moss ( so much moss, ) sculpt sections out of the limestone to show praise to the Solstice ( which leads to ornate tunnels winding with scale-like patterns carved into the walls for most of the lair, ) and they eat their weight in plump mushrooms and ichor-tainted roots. There's nothing to complain for since they have their every need met for the time being, until something monumental changes they're more than happy to continue their strange little life below the ground.
Sezha is the lair curator -- the one that plans new winding tunnels or cellars for different types of jewel-toned mushroom growths, and decides the final colour palettes for new artistic projects run by Seiph and pong ( who are both equally as passionate about ensuring the subterranean lair is as beautiful as it is sustainable. ) He often spends his time ripping through the tunnels at full tilt, knowing the lair so well that he can whip past daintier sections of their artistic 'venture' into the depths without so much as rustling the daintiest of fungi. His body is more stoat-like than anything else, modified and specialised for this way of life away from the air, his feathery wings often just used for emoting rather than ever catching air beneath them.
When not 'working,' he spends a lot of his time breeding silkmoths, the colonies able to sustain some of their trades with the other branches of their alliance, but it's mostly just something he enjoys doing. Cocoons are often found tucked into his dense fur or strung carefully on wires and tucked into the crooks of his wings for safety. When a new fungi colony is settled into a new lair section, Sezha will often have plans made for new moth colonies to introduce.
He's meticulous about keeping himself tidy, often idly grooming his fur and feathers while discussing matters with other Acolytes. Most of the cave network have walls bound with marble rather than dusty stones or raw earth for that reason. His body is often painted with gold pigments, making him shine under glowlights and sparkle while streaking past.
The only time the Acolytes are able to properly leave their den is during the Solstice's wake, which lasts about two weeks in summer and winter. All four of these are usually a time for Sezha to simply exist and watch life continue above the surface, to enjoy the tones outside of his normal reach, and to memorise as much of it as he could to inspire him for the next six months of work.
BIG MESS OF RAMBLING but I love he so much, I love this section of the lair so much, they're all just literal goblin energy beans that love to make things pretty and consider themselves artists but half the time it's just hyper-fixation and so much needs to be knocked down and redone constantly like a giant ouroborous of cave networks. They dance and gnash teeth, create, destroy, worship, and repeat.
maybe some day I'll actually get my lair lore out properly but it's literally a 3-saga thing at this point because 3-generations of lair heads RIP.

I love the beastie boys more than anything but they absolutely were homophobic and what's so wonderful is how much they ended up being totally not homophobic and to quote mike d entirely pro gay. like do we need to pull up the adrock faggot rant. or the proposed name of their debut album. and yes they were also playing exaggerated parodies of total assholes but you don't come for the gays like that without being some type of homophobic. obviously they learned and grew and were such sweethearts at their core that they were truly not homophobic anymore by the 90s but we can admit that they actually were homophobic

Your playlists are so good???!??? I don’t even really listen to those genres but I’m obsessed with your Billy and Stu playlists.
I’m not very good at making playlists, so I was wondering how you make yours? Do you know and like all these songs already, or do you have ways to look for songs that fit the characters?
Also I’m four chapters into Debaser and it is unraveling my mind >:)
Hey thank you so much!
To answer your question it’s a mix of stuff I already knew and stuff I went looking for. I start with a few songs or artists I think a character would listen to. For Billy some of these were Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, the Deftones, and Placebo. For Stu I had Weezer, Blink 182, Queens of the Stone Age, and the Beastie Boys. I don’t think the Beastie Boys ended up on Stu’s mixtape but they went into the party mix.
These artists are just a starting point, I use them to either come up with other artists I know or I go looking for similar artists who were around at the same time. I generally restrict myself to stuff from the 90s-earlier as much as possible, unless a track feels too appropriate to leave out. A lot of the time I look at billboard charts for certain years to find songs or artists that sound right.
I end up with these massive jumbled playlists of songs that “sound right”, and I cut those down by looking at the lyrics and deciding if I think they fit the character at this point in the narrative. From there I start trying to build them into playlists that have a flow in terms of genre/vibe.
For example Billy’s playlist starts with some more upbeat slightly older rock, moves into something I want to call hitchcock core (but that’s just me naming a vibe), then some darker, slinky electro stuff, into some angry boy alt rock, which turns into horny boy alt rock.
I have no idea if that description makes sense lmao, but that’s the process. These playlists take a lot of time and searching, I won’t lie, but I find them a useful exercise for characterization and I listen to them a lot while I’m writing.
I hope you like the rest of the fic!

heyo! been reading ur lltk fic and wanna do some silly doodles of ur creatures so i was wondering if u have any references or just descriptions i could use to draw them
Tumblr media
HELLO YES I KNOW YOU!! YOURE LIVING RENT FREE IN MY COMMENTS AND THOUGHTS!!!!
pounding my fist on the floor while wailing over the thought of anyone drawing my beasties gnjfxdf
tragically i dont have any real refs or real descriptions for the cast so far, the best i've got is vibes and a picture of eridanus i posted recently. i will transmit the vibes, however!
nebula: hes got the orbiting star ocourse, and his big fluffy cloak. when i think of what kind of clothes he wears i think like. poet's blouse. black trousers. that kinda thing. maybe a crown? i do not know. hes very sad looking. wet cat of a man
binary: dull colors definitely! also just. librarian core. i really dont have much else for vibes its just "binary :3" in my head
rust: pretty close to bloodmoon v1 tbh, though with more practical clothing? since they go hunting and stuff. the hat stays on at all times however. kinda gives 2-tailed hat vibes tho. can work without. vampire fangies are essential
eridanus: she is BIG she is GLOWY she is DARK she is SPOOKY. she doesnt wear CLOTHES because theyre UNCOMFORTABLE. i refer to the pic ive posted of her for colors and things. orange stripes and underbelly, black scales, red eyes. out of water her fins are floppy and shes cute and i love her. her picture is in her tag if that helps searching for it btw
bird boy lunar: oh man ive got a Vision for him. a Vision. he's more based off of lunar's first proper design, the lil guy ya know? but also still not? idk. anyway most essential things are that hes birdy! bird legs, his arms are wings but on the wrist joint he has lil graspers. think bat for that part. he may or may not have tail feathers dont ask me i dont know things. hes like a species of insect to me.
hope these insane ramblings from a madman help you!!

I’d love the spiel on good ol’, classic-model Maddie!
OH BOY, I've been waitin for this one, crackin my knuckles here Long and short of their personality is that they're pretty quiet around those they don't know, minmaxes their speech in order to communicate if necessary but otherwise they just kinda stomp around and mind their own business. Around people they DO know though, practically an entirely different person, very energetic, very prone to illustrate what they're talking about with gestures (and subconscious flourishes of magic and whatnot) with a mixture of cheekiness and a hint of protectiveness that manifests itself every so often. Very prone to talking on end about a subject if the chance is provided as well (Who'd have figured right?). --- So Maddie's whole deal is that like, essentially they're comprised entirely of magic? Constructed with a mix of both mana and data due to the completely incidental circumstances of their creation (long and short is a growing magic crystal formation piercing an old-world computer with an AI core and template in it). They're kinda really curious as a result? A lot of their info starting off was strictly inherent (language and all that) so they spent a lot of time learning stuff from their outside environment, which is at least partially why they tend to take on beastly appearances due to a lot of that developmental time being spent in the woods with the wildlife in the area surrounding where they were created. Especially early on in their time they kinda just, walked around as this big quad kitsune lookin beast and would even still wander around towns and cities in that appearance in spite of clearly sticking out like a sore thumb. As a result of essentially only being magic, they kinda don't really have an interior or anything, like if you were to perform an x-ray on them it would kinda just, show absolutely nothing. All their thoughts are essentially done as "processes" really due to that partial AI component, they just absorb things they eat once they swallow rather than having a distinct stomach or nothing. Since their form is really loose in that regard it's what allows them to shapeshift so damn easily honestly? Plus the whole like, mana+data mixture means that it's really easy for them to just, get into people's machinery and operate it for them if they so desire. A lot of this stuff kinda just, ended up being elaborated upon later but it all kinda fell into place as far as like A. I like Maddie being an AI to an extent B. I like Maddie being made of magic to an extent Which ended up leading into C. I like Maddie being a volatile beast of magic that kinda just hangs around in spite of being monstrously overpowered, big beasty that chills with pals and is vaguely a little off-kilter

MTV Artist To Watch: twenty | one | pilots
Posted 1/28/13 6:00 am EST by Rachel Brodsky
Meet MTV's Artist To Watch, Twenty One Pilots.
Meet twenty | one | pilots: masters of the piano-back flip.
We have so many questions for Columbus' twenty | one | pilots. First, why the breaks in their name? Why all the masks? If they had to classify themselves as a single genre, what would it be? These are the first of many questions that surface regarding the multifaceted, multi-genred duo -- between drummer Josh Dun and lead singer Tyler Joseph, the pair manage to create a sound that is neither here, nor there, not rock and not pop, DEFINITELY kinda hip-hop, but also twenty | one tries at everything else on the spectrum. Feeling confused yet? Not to worry -- TOP's quirky brand of pop-meets-hip-hop-meets-rock-meets-hardcore may sound complex, but it only takes one live viewing to know that all those loose ends are immediately tightened up once TOP hit the stage.
Old friends from high school, the guys got their start by self-releasing two full-length albums and built a major Midwest following with a subsequent deluge of energetic shows (the guys have been known to backflip off pianos mid-show, and that certainly doesn't hurt visibility). Now signed to Fueled By Ramen (also home to Paramore!), TOP have since released a Three Songs EP and now a third full-length album, Vessel.
Produced by Greg Wells (who also worked with Adele), Vessel features punchy, hard-hitting, melodic ditties like "Holding On To You" and "Guns For Hands" (which you can download here!), tracks that channel Matt & Kim's cheer-punk attitude, the Beastie Boys' shouting hip-hop vocals, and Eminem's fast-talking nasal bark. You can even hear a little Ben Folds Five in TOP's piano-infused beats (before the vocals kick in, obvs), while Vessel's "Migraine" kicks off with a vocoded ELO vibe.
Now one of MTV's Artists To Watch for 2013, the rock-rap-tronica duo (See? We tried to classify them) recently performed at MTV's "Artist To Watch" showcase, where they rolled out a teeming set of pop-core anthems, onstage gymnastics, ‘90s R&B covers, and Blue Man-esque side-by-side drumming.
In addition to preparing to become the biggest band in the world, twenty | one | pilots are currently touring the U.S. through February -- catch them before they hit Japan and South Korea in March! There might even be some backflips in it for you.
+ Watch twenty | one | pilots perform "Car Radio" and "Guns For Hands" live at NYC's Highline Ballroom, and check out more of MTV's 2013 Artists To Watch.

do u have any songs recs that remind u of sean??
OH BOY ANON DO I!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly, in lieu of ranting and raving (as we all know I have a tendency to do) let me just link my Sean spotify playlist ✨
Artists/Songs of note here:
Ian Dury!!! Honestly THE Sean artist imho, Sean would've loved his music, and if I ever were to make a playlists with songs I think he would enjoy, Ian Dury would be there a LOT. The fact that there's only two here is me being SO restrictive with myself kmnjbhjnbh
Someone New by Hozier!! Honestly if you have a Sean playlist and this song isn't on it, what are you doing?!? This song is so Sean core it HURTS, and the Irish boy who looks like he crawled out of the local bog (thanks, Molly dear) deserves a song from THE Irish bog man!!!!
Beastie Boys & Rage Against the Machine!! Look at me. Look at me. These bands are so Sean core. This is a truth we must accept as Sean lovers and stans.
Special Girl by dodie!! Honestly if you don't understand my vision by putting this song on his playlist, I really can't help you. But if you have been reading my Sean takes here the past six months, I think you'll get it ;3
Thank you for asking, I hope getting a full playlist instead of specific recs is okay!! I've been building this playlist for a little while now, and while it'll never be finished, I am pretty proud of it where it is atm!

My humble thoughts on
Tumblr media
Volume 3 delivers a satisfying and touching conclusion for our favorite band of rag-tag A-holes. You can really feel that James Gunn poured his heart and soul into this film, his MCU swan song.
While at its core this film really Rocket's story, James Gunn does a terrific balancing act with the cast. Each character including the villain get ample time to shine. The principal cast each deliver excellent performances.
Chukwudi Iwuji is great as The High Evolutionary displaying his regal yet sociopathic nature to perfection. (Self boast, I totally called it regarding The High Evolutionary's stretchy face. ;)) Bradley Cooper portrays Rocket with heartfelt emotion and sympathy which will have you reaching for a tissue.
Volume 3 also features the long awaited MCU debut of Adam Warlock. I'll bet opinions will vary on his role in the film but I felt he fit well within the structure of the story. While he did not have many spoken lines or what you would call traditional character development I think James Gunn did a good job of evolving the character in a more silent and visual manner.
If I have a couple gripes, one would be mainly with some of the changes to The High Evolutionary because I'm a fan of the comic books first and the H.E. is one of my favorite villains. However despite the changes I can say due to Chudwudi's portrayal every time the H.E. was onscreen it was gold. Secondly, I feel the batch of music/songs were probably my least favorite of the trilogy. That's not to say the songs were bad just that I didn't feel they puntuated the scenes as well as Vol. 1 & 2's song selections did. The Beastie Boys "No Sleep Til Brooklyn" was used to perfection in a great sequence however.
Not much more to be said without spoilers. A fun, thrilling, satisfying third and final act to a what is now an excellent trilogy dedicated to a bunch of galactic super band of A-holes. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hi Alice!! Hope you’re doing well and taking care of yourself 💜
I had some random thoughts pop in my head: what kind of music do u think Lloyd would listen to? Like what would he listen to running errands or working out
Another random thought: what’s his self care routine like? We all know how much our boy loves to pamper himself and keep his appearance up 😝 you don’t have to answer if u don’t want! I also just want to say I love your work and you have a gift for writing 💓💓 keep up the amazing work
Lloyd's self care routine beings with his skin. He's not particularly spendy in this department, but he always prioritizes his routine. Lloyd Hansen does not miss a day of skin care - ever. He uses Cetaphil for a cleanser because it's hypoallergenic. This is purely for practical purposes, since he goes through a lot of it. He washes his face every morning, again after his workout, and double cleanses with an oil, and then Cetaphil to rinse it off, at night.
With moisturizer, he's more picky. He likes the Blu Atlas because of the woodsy scent and their high quality ingredients. Unlike the cleanser, which is basically fancy soap, his moisturizer is going to stay on and permeate his skin for hours. So, this is where he spends his money. He uses an eye cream from Blu Atlas, and wishes he'd have started using it earlier.
Lloyd wears facial sunscreen every single day, and makes sure to reapply on the days he golfs. He keeps regular spray on sunscreen in the golf cart for the rest of his body.
He also uses a Niacinamide serum and vitamin C serum in the morning. In the evening, he applies the AlphaRet overnight cream before bed. Lloyd has no intention of wrinkling early, particularly not when he's dating someone so much younger than him.
Also, he's not hesitant to do some dermaplaning, microneedling, or a facial peel now and then. Lloyd sees his dermatologist twice a year for a skin check and preventative care.

Lloyd’s taste in music is as follows:
Rock
Classical
Country
Rhythm & Blues
Hip Hop / Rap
First is rock music. He grew up listening to R.E.M., Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, KISS, and the Beastie Boys. This is the genre he gravitates towards the most. 90s rock is his favorite era, followed closely by 80s rock. For that decade, his favorites are: Queen, Lover Boy, Depeche Mode, and Bruce Springsteen. In the genre, his taste spans a wide variety of artists from ZZ Top to the Rolling Stones and all the way into more pop influenced bands like Cheap Trick and The Outfield.
Lloyd is also a huge fan of classical music.
He’d never willingly share this fact, but it’s been a coping mechanism of his for a long time. His study hall teacher used to play it during class and he found it really helped him calm down and concentrate. The softer sounds of composers like Bach, Mozart, and Debussy are among his favorites. With time, his taste expanded into underrated composers like Erich Korngold, Alexander Scriabin, and Ottorino Respighi. In terms of minutes listened, classical music is one of Lloyd’s core genres.
He also enjoys country music. Like his taste for classical music, he sometimes prefers to hide this one. Being around Zach, who also loves country music, tends to bring it out more. His favorites are George Strait, Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, LeAnn Rimes, and Alan Jackson. He also likes some of the older artists like Ronnie Milsap, Charley Pride, Glen Campbell, Merle Haggard and Eddy Arnold.
Another genre he listens to is R&B. This stems from being alive in the 90’s. Boys II Men released bangers, okay? Once you heard them on the radio you went looking for more. He likes Alicia Keys, Montell Jordan, Rihanna and Marvin Gaye. His taste in Rap and Hip Hop was developed more in college. It was the popular workout soundtrack of the time and his college football program played it in the weights room. He mostly likes artists like DMX, Eminem, Nas, OutKast, Ice Cube, and Tupac.
Finally, here are some of Lloyd’s favorite songs.

About Me: Favorite Albums
Music isn't something I talk much about here on my blog, mostly because I don't feel like I'm qualified enough to talk about these sorts of things. I know movies like the back of my hand, but I'm definitely not smart enough to dissect what makes music good beyond "I like how it sounds."
But hey, I'm trying to help you get to know me, so here are thirty albums I like the sound of from a variety of artists. My big rule is I have to like at least five songs on any given album for it to qualify. I've listed my top three from each here, so the other two I'll leave to your imaginations (except for my #1 favorite, for which you'll get all of my top 5).
Honorable mentions: Pinkerton - Weezer, Under the Covers, Vol. II - Ninja Sex Party, Montero - Lil Nas X, Poodle Hat - Weird Al, Bad Hair Day - Weird Al, Master of Puppets - Metallica, License to Ill - Beastie Boys, Thriller - Michael Jackson, Purple Rain - Prince, Teenage Dream - Katy Perry, and the so bad it’s good masterpiece Angelic 2 the Core - Corey Feldman. I also didn't include the soundtracks to stage musicals, but the 90s version of Cats and the 80s version of Starlight Express are also some of my favorites.
30. The Hazards of Love - The Decemberists
Tumblr media
A tale of a tragic romance told in the form of a concept album, this would almost certainly make the list even if it didn't have some of the best villain songs I've ever heard.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Won’t Want for Love (Margaret in the Taiga)”
2. “The Queen’s Rebuke/The Crossing”
1. “The Rake’s Song”
29. Youthanasia - Megadeth
Tumblr media
Quite simply, a fantastic metal album. Not much more to say than that!
Favorite Songs:
3. “Youthanasia”
2. “A Tout le Monde”
1. “Family Tree”
28. In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Tumblr media
Even if it was just the semi-title track that I loved, this album would probably make the list. It's prog rock perfection.
Favorite Songs:
3. "Moonchild"
2. "21st Century Schizoid Man"
1. "The Court of the Crimson King"
27. Saturday Night Fever - Various Artists
Tumblr media
The Bee Gees obviously are the stars of the show on this soundtrack album, but it also has one of my favorite things: Disco remixes of classical music.
Favorite Songs:
3. “A Fifth of Beethoven”
2. “Night on Disco Mountain”
1. “Stayin’ Alive”
26. The Marshal Mathers LP 2 - Eminem
Tumblr media
While the original album is a classic in its own right and nothing on this one is as immediately iconic as "The Real Slim Shady" or "Stan," I do think that this older, more mature Eminem reflecting back on his career and flexing his skills is overall the better package. This was a real comeback for him, after multiple less-than-impressive comebacks, and it is glorious.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Love Game”
2. “The Monster”
1. “So Far…”
25. McCartney II - Paul McCartney
Tumblr media
This is what happens when you let a beloved rock star get really weird. It’s so experimental and quirky; only a Beatle could get this bizarre.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Frozen Jap”
2. “Coming Up”
1. “Temporary Secretary”
24. Painkiller - Judas Priest
Tumblr media
One of those rare times where the songs on a metal album are actually, genuinely as fucking awesome as the album cover art.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Night Crawler”
2. “Painkiller”
1. “A Touch of Evil”
23. Songs for the Deaf - Queens of the Stone Age
Tumblr media
With the assistance of Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age really put their best foot forward for their breakout album. As hard as most of the tracks go, my absolute favorite is the eerier, slower hidden track about cannibalism.
Favorite Songs:
3. “You Think I Ain’t Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire”
2. “First It Giveth”
1. “Mosquito Song”
22. Crash Twinsanity - Spiralmouth
Tumblr media
The day I found out this entire soundtrack was a capella, my mind was blown. You mean to tell me this whole album is just mouth noises? It really does have the Crash vibe down.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Worm Chase”
2. “Rusty Walrus Chase”
1. “The Evil Twins”
21. Awesome Mix Vol. 2 - Various Artists
Tumblr media
Every Guardians movie soundtrack is great, but out of the three it’s the second movie’s soundtrack that reigns supreme. It kicks off with ELO, scores the climactic final battle with Fleetwood Mac, and features a groovy disco remix of the Guardians theme music with vocals provided by David Hasselhoff over the credits. It’s all killer, no filler.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Guardians Inferno”
2. “Mr. Blue Sky”
1. “The Chain”
20. Mouth Dreams - Neil Cicierega
Tumblr media
The way the songs flow into each other, the subtle jokes scattered throughout… Really, the only thing holding this back is some songs are just a bit too weak to justify bumping it above its predecessor.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Closerflies”
2. “Ribs”
1. “Fredhammer”
19. Mouth Moods - Neil Cicierega
Tumblr media
From fantastic mashups that combine a dozen songs into one coherent whole to remixes that alter a single song and completely warp the premise to the point of absurdity, this is absolutely the highest point of the Mouth series.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Annoyed Grunt”
2. “Shit”
1. “Wow Wow”
18. Ten - Pearl Jam
Tumblr media
Homelessness. Suicide. Incest. Murder. This might be one of the single darkest albums of the grunge era, and it firmly cemented Pearl Jam as a force to be reckoned with. Eddie Vedder’s unique vocals really are what makes these songs stand out from the crowd.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Alive”
2. “Jeremy”
1. “Even Flow”
17. The Symbol Remains - Blue Öyster Cult
Tumblr media
You wouldn’t think a 70s rock band that loves singing about weird occult stuff could drop anything good five decades into their career, but BOC ain’t any old rock band. Only they could take a silly, memetic concept like the stereotypical “Florida Man” and turn it into a song that has enough weird and mystic vibes that it can easily sit alongside songs about aliens, eldritch horrors, vampires, and zombie Joan Crawford in their discography.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Tainted Blood”
2. “Florida Man”
1. “Box in My Head”
16. Impera - Ghost
Tumblr media
One of Ghost's most solid albums to date. It has a few low points ("Twenties") but the highs are so high they easily eclipse those few lesser tracks.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Spillways”
2. “Hunter’s Moon”
1. “Call Me Little Sunshine”
15. The Presidents of the United States of America – The Presidents of the United States of America
Tumblr media
I have very fond memories of listening to this in the car growing up. It’s such a charming piece of 90s rock, with the band foretelling their ultimate fate with the track “We Are Not Going To Make It.” Oh well, they manage to make it onto this list at least.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Kitty”
2. “Lump”
1. “Peaches”
14. Born This Way – Lady Gaga
Tumblr media
Lady Gaga has fallen from the lofty heights she once stood upon, not quite being as massive as her heyday... But with an album that gets you this high, there's really nowhere to go but down. This album has a song for everyone, and for someone with taste as weird as my own, it had a load of great tracks.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Bad Kids”
2. “Bloody Mary”
1. “Judas”
13. In Utero - Nirvana
Tumblr media
You can definitely tell that Nevermind was a more polished, commercial album when you listen to this one. The songs here are so much more raw than on their more famous album, with so much more bite to them. It can be a bit off-putting for sure, but this is definitely the short-lived band's best work (if not my favorite).
Favorite Songs:
3. “Dumb”
2. “Rape Me”
1. “Pennyroyal Tea”
12. Undertale Soundtrack – Toby Fox
Tumblr media
Easily my favorite instrumental soundtrack of all time—and considering all the fantastic game soundtracks I’ve heard in my time, this is saying something. Every single track is a fantastic and fitting tune for wherever they’re used in-game, and even if my favorite track is the obvious pick, even I’ll admit that it’s not the best one (that would probably be #2).
Favorite Songs:
3. “Death By Glamour”
2. “Battle Against a True Hero”
1. “Megalovania”
11. Metal Gear Rising Soundtrack – Various artists
Tumblr media
A game as insane and metal as Rising needs a soundtrack to match, and to say this one delivered is an understatement. Every song is one of the most badass things you will ever hear, with a good chunk of them elaborating on the motivations and personalities of the bosses. It says a lot that the weakest song is Blade Wolf's, and even that's just "okay" as opposed to "awful."
Favorite Songs:
3. “Red Sun”
2. “A Stranger I Remain”
1. “It Has to be This Way”
10. Seven Inches of Satanic Panic - Ghost
Tumblr media
I don’t think this is better than their full albums, but I definitely think this is one of the best musical one-two punches I’ve ever heard. “Mary on a Cross” and “Kiss the Go-Goat” are two of Ghost’s finest songs, and this is where they came from
9. I Get Wet – Andrew W.K.
Tumblr media
In the proud tradition of AC/DC, pretty much every song on this album sounds the same—and none of the songs rock any less for it. It’s a collection of awesomely stupid anthems about partying, hot girls, and NYC that goes harder than it has any need to.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Ready to Die”
2. “She is Beautiful”
1. “I Get Wet”
8. Running With Scissors – Weird Al
Tumblr media
This was a big turning point in Al’s career—it’s when he debuted his new look, sans glasses and with his hair grown out—and for me at least it’s the album where I feel like he put all the lessons he learned over the 90s to good use. It’s true that there’s a few lines that haven’t aged well but the overall package is strong enough that it overshadows the blemishes. It has his strongest “movie recap” parody song, his best polka medley, and his funniest and most iconic epic-length song; how can it not make my top ten?
Favorite Songs:
3. “The Saga Begins”
2. “Polka Power!”
1. “Albuquerque”
7. Doolittle - Pixies
Tumblr media
It’s genuinely tough picking between this and Surfer Rosa, but when it comes right down to it Doolittle is the one that has more tracks I like. I don’t think anything here is quite as good as “Where is My Mind?” from the latter album, but that album doesn’t have “Mr. Grieves” on it.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Here Comes Your Man”
2. “Wave of Mutilation”
1. “Monkey Gone to Heaven”
6. Invisible Touch - Genesis
Tumblr media
I think Invisible Touch is Genesis’s undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to “Land of Confusion.” In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. “In Too Deep” is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I’ve heard in rock.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Domino”
2. “Land of Confusion”
1. “Invisible Touch”
5. Mandatory Fun – Weird Al
Tumblr media
As of 2023 this is Al’s last album, and if he never makes another it’s hard to argue that he didn’t go out on top. The style parodies are some of his best ever, the polka medley is fantastic, and the parodies here are all leagues better than the songs they’re spoofing. “Foil” in particular is worth singling g out for being a hilarious subversion of the stereotypical food-related parodies Al was known for back in the day.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Foil”
2. “Handy”
1. “Jackson Park Express”
4. ABBA Gold - ABBA
Tumblr media
Is it cheating to put a greatest hits compilation on this list? Well, since it's my list, the answer is no! An album like this is all bangers, no filler, every song I love in one place one after the other. The omission of “Tiger” is the only flaw.
3. Nevermind - Nirvana
Tumblr media
It's pretty inarguable that this is a more polished and commercial grunge album than In Utero, but no matter what Kurt or the other band members say this is still one of the best albums ever made. My only gripe with it is that the song that gets the most attention, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," overshadows a lot of songs better than it. "In Bloom" is the best track in my opinion, with its lyrics abut fans with zero media literacy still very relevant even to this day.
Favorite Songs:
3. “Polly”
2. “Come as You Are”
1. “In Bloom”
2. The Number of the Beast – Iron Maiden
Tumblr media
From the band with the greatest album covers of all time comes a metal album featuring the hard rock version of "Roxanne," an epic seven minute track, and the greatest song condemning the actions of colonizers. Oh, and the title track is pretty awesome too. Considering how lukewarm the first two albums are, this might be one of the greatest glow ups in metal history, going from a decent but not spectacular act to one of the greatest bands of all time.
Favorite Songs:
3. “22 Acacia Avenue”
2. “Hallowed be Thy Name”
1. “Run to the Hills”
1. Spirit Phone – Lemon Demon
Tumblr media
Maybe I'm just a basic bitch for calling this my favorite album ever, but the fact of the matter is that this whole album is basically tailor made for my interests. Songs about conspiracy theories? Songs about urban legends like Gef and Polybius? Songs that make fun of Reaganomics? I genuinely could not imagine a better set of songs than this if I tried.
Favorite Songs:
5. “Reaganomics”
4. “Touch-Tone Telephone”
3. “When He Died”
2. “Sweet Bod”
1. “Cabinet Man”

early morning rambles for my silly evil gw2 group(s) ocs.... no names yet since theyre still heavy wips but i hope to use these beasties in roleplay too! :]
i wont tag as spoilers since there arent any /lh most of the stuff i'll talk about you can find on the wiki! :]
putting all this under the cut to spare ur guys' dash
nightmare court
* she/her femme sylvari. THEYRE SO BEAUTIFUL TO ME i cant NOT make one...
* prrrobably a necromancer (idk elite spec yet..). instead of feasting on JUST life force, her connection to the nightmare allows her to feed on the fear of those around her. thus i associate her with the soul reaping core specialization! :]
* themed like a wolfsbane plant! a poisonous, beautiful purple color. her accents may be orange and/or green for some nice contrast
* still young for a sylvari; she USED to be a dreamer before she got alien beamed away by nightmare courtiers who wanted to use her budding necromancy to their advantage. promising they'd show her much greater things it was capable of, she decided. huh! okay! :]
* funnily enough she actually isnt like. overtly sadistic or malicious. she WILL deal excruciating pain to others, but moreso because she was told to rather than her actually wanting to hurt anyone... or because she got bored and pain is the only "enriching activity" she knows /lh
sons of svanir
* he/him masc norn... im going in girl-boy-girl-boy order so this one gets to be a dude :]
* former follower of either raven or leopard, but was convinced to join svanir at a pretty young age because he struggled to fit in with other norn... svanir promised him a home: a convincing temptation
* pretty cut and corner svanir (excluding the whole misogyny thing). reveres jormag. he especially feels that jormag is the superior spirit, due to the fact it not only is a WHOLE ASS DRAGON, but it also is tangible. jormag has been seen and wounded and attacked before; the other spirits, while you CAN see them, he finds are incorporeal and therefore just spectres unworthy of the praise they get
* a ranger! i imagine he tames mostly ice wurms, but he also takes in beasts tainted by the ice dragon's corruption. he is surprisingly (to others at least) kind to his beasts, and they fight with a fierce loyalty at his side. idk elite spec yet ... bleehh
* very unnerving, even to other svanir sometimes. he's very quick and trick; like nature, he is a fickle creature and does what he seems to please. and get on his bad side, and you may suddenly find yourself hunted by gleaming eyes in the blinding shiverpeak blizzards.
flame legion
* she/her charr. i just think flame legion ladies are neat :]
* born into flame legion. her father was a powerful shaman, and her mother a gladium who was manipulated by her mate into becoming flame.
* being a lady in flame legion isnt fun to nobody's surprise, so initally she was just Some Guy's Lame Daughter until it was revealed she has elementalist magic... Something her sire was keenly interested in. After much fighting on the matter, she was allowed to practice being a shaman, even being granted an honorary title. (Though nobody. calls her it really)
* AS MENTIONED shes an elementalist! her main and favored attunement is fire (duh /j), but she is impressively powerful and manipulates all elements with relative ease, especially earth alongside fire. water and air are sort of novelties or in a pitch healing elements for her.
* a pretty quiet lady. .... TOO quiet, sometimes. she always appears deep in thought, contemplating something that nobody never really knows. she doesnt speak unless spoken to, and generally is very cagey and guarded.
inquest
* he/him boy rat. RUAGGHHH i need to make more male asura. silly silly guys
* BORN AND RAISED INQUEST 💯💯💯💯 homegrown (literally) by his father, who is councillor yhak! totally no shady reasons behind his making at all :] (yhak wanted to just have a back-up "him" in order to keep his hold on the council)
* a very powerful high clearance guy. probably recognized under the "overseer" or "officer" title?? i'll have to spin my Wheel Of Inquest Ranks and Titles to figure it out /lh EITHER WAY his dad gave him a high rank to get him used to being at the top and abusing power ^.^ if you saw that last part no you didnt.
* his class is. tricky to find out but mainly im thinking he's a mesmer! elite spec probably virtuoso. he can do anything with his mind (STABS YOU WITH PSYCHIC BLADES)
* very Customer Service Pleasant. he's actually a very mean and uptight person but hes surprisingly easy to please if he gets what he wants. very intelligent in terms of politics and like another oc of mine (hi srabba) he wishes to seize the area around the thaumanovas reactor in order to utilize the chaotic energies lurking around...
bandit
* she/her female human (TUMBLEWEED) /J im thinking for she's elonian OR canthan for funsies
* Ok so. imagine this. ex-noble girl. she gets sick of the constant squabbling and formalities of noble duties, and falls in love with a bad boy/girl promising to whisk her away to a better world... 10 days later shes now a bandit and is about to blow up an orphanage. Girl help.
* squints my eye. thief. without a shadow of a doubt this girl is a trained thief. mainly im thinking shes very acrobatic in fighting so shes a daredevil too! :]
* a bit of an awkward girl. shes had to go from Princess Smiles and Waves to "if you mess with me again i'll stab you in the side" so her personality is a little. skewed. but she has a silly humorous personality! enjoys being the life of the party! :]
