Fantasy Romance Recommendations Pt.1
I'm a big fan of Fantasy Romance books but I've noticed that a lot of recommendations lists have the same books over and over again. Nothing against Sarah J Maas, Jennifer Armentrout and Holly Black, but I have read their books already and I'm looking for new suggestions. And thus, I decided to make my own little list (with help from @housebaylor and @shirewalker). Maybe it will help someone somewhere. XD ***Some of the books listed here are not Romance novels officially but all have romance and have HFN or HEA endings Fantasy Romances The Fallen Empire Trilogy by Grace Draven The Kraelian Empire has ruled with an iron fist for centuries, its grip unyielding until the power of three women, and the men devoted to them, break it.
The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden Vasya Petrovna is a young woman gifted with the Sight which allows her to see spirits who inhabits the world. The arrival of Christianity spells trouble for her and the world of the spirits at large. This story has her rebel against her fate as a woman in medieval Russia, go on a great adventure and meet amazing characters.  One of my favourite.
Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher A subversive take on Fairytales! After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marra―the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter―has finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.  It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. Celia and Marco's beautiful story of challenges, love and magic. Beautiful haunting magic. Radiance by Grace Draven Two people brought together by the trappings of duty and politics will discover they are destined for each other, even as the powers of a hostile kingdom scheme to tear them apart. The Bird and The Sword by Amy Harmon Magic is forbidden and gifted people are sentenced to death. Lark, a voiceless young woman, has a gift she must keep hidden. The day her mother was killed, she told lark's father she wouldn’t speak again, and she told him if Lark's died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would trade his soul and lose his son to the sky. A Fate of Wrath and Flame by K.A. Tucker Portal Fantasy! Gifted thief Romeria is transported into another world into the body of a treacherous princess. Romeria is plunged into a startling realm of opposing thrones, warring elven, and elemental magic she cannot begin to fathom. Only read the first book so far Married to Magic Trilogy by Elise Kova Shared Universe, Fantasy Romance, Stand Alone Novels About Young Women and their Unexpected Romances with Magical Men Rhapsodic by Laura Thalassa Callypso Lillis is a siren with a very big problem, one that stretches up her arm and far into her past. For the last seven years she’s been collecting a bracelet of black beads up her wrist, magical IOUs for favors she’s received. Everyone knows that if you need a favor, you go to the Bargainer and everyone knows that sooner or later he always collects. Only read the first book Promise of Darkness by Bec McMaster Princess. Tribute. Sacrifice. Is she the one prophesied to unite two warring Fae courts? Or the one bound to destroy them? If you like S.J.Maas you might like this YA Fantasy Romances Uprooted by Naomi Novik Agnieszka lives in a quiet village bordering a corrupted Wood. Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik Multiple POVs fairytale Miryem gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. When an ill-advised boast draws the attention of the king of the Staryk--grim fey creatures who seem more ice than flesh--Miryem's fate, and that of two kingdoms, will be forever altered. The Girl who fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh Mina's people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them with death and despair. In an attempt to appease him, each year a beautiful maiden is thrown into the sea to serve as the Sea God’s bride, in the hopes that one day the “true bride” will be chosen and end the suffering. An Enchantment of Raven by Margaret Rogerson With a flick of her paintbrush, Isobel creates stunning portraits for a dangerous set of clients: the fair folk. But when she receives her first royal patron—Rook, the autumn prince—Isobel makes a deadly mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes, a weakness that could cost him his throne, and even his life. Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson Elisabeth was raised in a magical library where dark magical grimoire are kept. She hopes to become a Warden whos job is protecting the Kingdom from their powers. Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. Shielded by Katlynn Flanders Hidden Princess, arranged marriage, yearning! A kingdom ravaged by war, and the princess who might be the key to saving not only those closest to her, but the kingdom itself, if she reveals the very secret that could destroy her. Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater Ever since she was cursed by a faerie, Theodora Ettings has had no sense of fear or embarrassment - a condition which makes her prone to accidental scandal. Dora hopes to be a quiet, sensible wallflower during the London Season - but when the strange, handsome and utterly uncouth Lord Sorcier discovers her condition, she is instead drawn into dangerous and peculiar faerie affairs. A Crown of Wishes by Rosha Chokshi Book 2 of a series. A captured princess and a wise prince team up and to win the Tournament of Wishes, a competition held in a mythical city where the Lord of Wealth promises a wish to the victor. ****Part 2: Urban Fantasy recs to follow.****

i need your fingerprints — ➥ e, one-shot, 3615 words rhaenyra longs to joins the rank of blood-sucking, long-lived blue bloods. but the lords decide who gets the gift and a woman is never chosen. it's a good thing her newly widowed uncle daemon sees the potential in her and offers her the venom. in exchange, he wants her as a wife. not as a blood thrall, but as an equal.
aka the vampire au i meant to publish earlier this month
ao3 link
preview
The white dress she has on has already caught her many eyes of admirers but Rhaenyra keeps her hands behind her back and strolls through the crowd, refusing dances from every man who thinks he is worthy of her. She's there because her father demands it and for no other reason. The dainty white choker around her neck a performed modesty for the Blue Blood dukes in attendance. A few of them watch her with predatory eyes, no doubt feeding on her scent as she walks by. She has no interest unless one of them wants to make her a Blue Blood as well, but these are boys playing the games of men, so she doubts it.
The craving virus is said to have come from the east — from Old Valyria. Her ancestors had it, gifting them with strength, power, longevity of life, and nigh imperviousness. But the gift always passes through the male line. The Echelon of lords and dukes kept a close eye on who they believed should and shouldn't get the virus. Passed through the blood, the virus enhanced every part of you, turning your skin as cold as death, morphing a human into a predator. Only sated by the taste of blood, eventually, the virus would win the war against the body. Those infected would eventually succumb to the madness and rabid nature of the virus, becoming a fully-fledged, uncontrollable vampire.
It was considered ill-taste and highly illegal to allow anyone to become a true vampire, those who began to show symptoms were given the right to share their final night before being executed the next day. Either by lopping their head off or a stake through the heart. It wouldn't do to have a member of the Echelon rabidly killing left and right. Even with all of that knowledge, even with the vile practice of blood-letting, Rhaenyra would rather be with the virus than without. Because the virus was only given to men, that meant women like her could only ever remain human. Her best bet was entering into a high-profile marriage and thrall contract that turned her into a blood bag for a high-placed duke or lord.
As the only child of her father, this put her house in a precarious position. As king, he was the leader of their country but also the head of their family house. Once he died, his property would pass to her but it would go to the man who held her contract, their land could only be bequeathed to true Blue Bloods. That was only the case if he didn't remarry, which he likely would, and have sons, which he likely would. Any prince of the realm would be given the virus and then all of her power would be gone. The trappings of their society chafed.
"Turn me, Father."
"Out of the question. The Echelon would never allow a woman in their ranks."
"So don't ask for their permission. Turn me and they won't be able to fight it. I will be like you, one of them."
He'd smiled softly and touched her face gently. "My dear, they will never accept you. Even if you joined them, you would never be like them. They would likely cut your heart out as a lesson to me. Better for me to protect you while you are human, if you become a Blue Blood all is fair game."
But she wanted it to be fair. She knew she could out think these Blue Bloods, but with the craving virus they would always be stronger, faster, and live longer than her. But perhaps he was right. She'd heard stories about rogue Blue Bloods being executed for taking the craving virus without the permission of the Echelon, but that person was not the princess.
"No dances tonight, princess?"
Lost in thought, she barely hears Daemon approach until he speaks. Startled, she jumps, forgetting how quiet and swift a Blue Blood can be. His long silver hair is pulled back in an intricate braid, he's dressed in resplendent velvets and leather – it looks far too luxurious and indulgent for this crowd. He's impossibly handsome, and that haughtiness that feels so unique to Daemon only draws in the interest of those around him. But his lilac eyes roam over her body and she feels them land on her throat. Her heart begins a restless pitter-patter at the sight of him.

God but I do love a good “rocky start marriage of convenience turns Messy and Emotional” plot and after devouring the first four books of Bec McMaster’s The Blue Bloods Conspiracy because I was delighted at the prospect of seeing the mighty stoic spymaster get fully knocked on his ass by love in the fifth, Dukes Are Forever delivered both much of what I wanted and things I didn’t know I needed (firmly in the camp of “actually more romance heroines should get to go apeshit and throw things” truly an iconic scene, also we love a sexy carriage scene)

hey, I’m sorry if you’ve already had this request but like, the line ‘princesses don’t marry kitchen boys’ has SUCH a hold on me… could you recommend any historical/paranormal romances with that vibe?
Luckily, lol, I just a answered a SOMEWHAT similar ask here and from that list I would specifically recommend:
Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas. Sara isn't even like... noble lol, she's gentry I think? But Derek is all "THESE FILTHY HANDS ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU SARA" and she's like "well I severely want them on me so can you please get over that".
Marrying Winterborne by Lisa Kleypas has this MILDLY because Rhys is kind of like "Helen is objectively too good and pure for me" but he also has sex with her within the first 50 pages so clearly he's off and on about it lmao.
Seduce Me at Sunrise by Lisa Kleypas is this HARD lmao, Kev is bASICALLY the Hathaways' kitchen boy, and even though he and Win grew up together, he still feels deeply unworthy of her for various reasons. And he also thinks he'll have sex with her too hard and she'll die. Kev is going through a lot, mentally.
Again the Magic has the "we were separated from each other by her father" thing, and McKenna does raise himself up to be more powerful than Aline in a lot of ways and actually wants revenge against what he believes was her decision... BUT you still have elements of this, especially in the beginning.
Between the Devil and Desire by Lorraine Heath is this distilled, lol. I mean. Jack is still trying to GET with her, but the class difference is a major issue.
I think other Lorraine books that emphasize the vibe a lot are Beyond Scandal and Desire and DEFINITELY The Scoundrel in Her Bed.
Scoundrel of My Heart by Lorraine Heath has an interesting variation in that the hero WAS the second son of a duke when he and the heroine first fell in love, but then his father was convicted of treason and executed, and the family lost everything. He and the heroine meet up again when he's rebuilt but scandalous and lower class, and she's engaged to a duke. It's A LOT.
Thief of Shadows has this vibe; the heroine is widowed and a lot more experienced than the hero, but she's kind of a major society fixture and their relationship seems untenable.
The Rogue of Fifth Avenue by Joanna Shupe has this hard, especially because the hero works for the heroine's father.
Marry Me by Midnight by Felicia Grossman has an heiress heroine, whereas the hero is this poor guy who works in the synagogue.
Pippa and the Prince of Secrets for sure has this vibe, by Grace Callaway. I mean, they even knew each other as kids, which I looove.
Once More, My Darling Rogue by Lorraine Heath has an interesting variation (and an insane twist lol) wherein the heroine is blue blooded and even looks down on the hero... whereas he's solidly working class by blood but was adopted by a duke and duchess.
For My Lady's Heart by Laura Kinsale is a medieval with this vibe, as the heroine is very literally a widowed princess, and the hero is the lower class knight sworn to protect her.
The Leopard Prince, by Elizabeth Hoyt, DEFINITELY. The hero is literally the heiress heroine's steward, it's super star-crossed.
Heart of Iron by Bec McMaster is a Victorian paranormal--werewolf hero is sent in to protect this upper class type girl, and there are a lot of issues keeping them apart, but her princessyness versus his "coarseness" and self worth are part of it.

Hi:) I'm thinking of reading Promise of Darkness from Bec McMaster. But before I wanted to ask if VI the prince cheats or has anything with other women? Or if the whole book we only see him with his wife Iskvien? I am so sick of the male antagonist having past ot actual women other then the heroine almost everywhere. Thanks if You can answer my question:) Have a good day!
God it's been a while since I read it! But no from what I remember there isn't. He's pretty in love with and committed to Iskvien

2020 Books. ⋙ Promise of Darkness by Bec McMaster
“We’re to spend the next three months together. Be careful with your challenges. I always play to win.” “Ah, but what precisely are we playing for?” “Hearts, perhaps.” It steals a laugh from me. Oh, he’s so polished, he’s practically gleaming. “You think to steal my heart?” “I don’t think that at all. I think you’ll give it to me.”

How do you have time to read at least a book a day? Do you work in publishing or is it like a championship level speedreading thing? (I am the world's slowest reader, like a book a month if that, so I am kind of in awe of your over 400 books so far this year stat. I think I've read somewhere around seven.)
It’s a couple of different things. The first one is that yes, I am a pretty fast reader, especially when it comes to fiction that I don’t have to expend a ton of extra mental energy on. I don’t work in publishing, but my job does involve a lot of reading and a need to be able to read expeditiously but thoroughly. So when I’m reading for fun, a book that’s, say, a 250-350 page rom com might take me 2-3 hours.
The second (although related) is that it’s sort of a law of averages point—during the regular work week I might read 1 book or so per day (which is easy enough to accomplish on days I’m in the office especially because I have a 45-minute commute each way, so that’s most of a book right there) although sometimes more, but on a Saturday where I’m relaxing/not doing anything else, I might go through like 3-5 books in one day. Just as a recent example, I was on vacation last week and on one 6-ish hour flight I got through 3 books and was just starting a 4th when we landed.
The third is just that not all books are created equal by page count. If I read a single book that’s a collection of novellas for example, I wouldn’t count each one as a separate book for purposes of my tally, but if I read a short or novella that I bought or checked out of the library as a stand-alone, I do count those separately. And while works in the 50-150 page range are probably only about 10% or so of my total, they’re not insignificant either.
And finally…I have ADHD and it’s not uncommon for me to find a new (to me) author and hyperfixate until I’ve run through a good amount of their backlist, sometimes even at the cost of, you know, appropriate amounts of sleep, especially if I’m in a period of high stress and burnout in other parts of my life. I’ve definitely done that a decent number of times this year, with, for example, Grace Callaway (15+ in a span of about a week or so), Kristin Callihan’s Darkest London series (7 books ~3 days), Bec McMaster’s London Steampunk + follow-up spinoff series (11 books in about a week), Sierra Simone (Thornchapel (4 books) followed by New Camelot (5) also over ~3-4 days). So there’s that XD

Hey dude, I have a slightly niche vibe that I positively inhale when I find, but unfortunately haven't found a lot so I figured I'd hit you up. Any recommendations for Sansa/Sandor (game of thrones) type relationships?
I'll admit, I'm not THEE most familiar with that ship, but I think I get the vibe. It is hard to find, but I'd recommend:
Shadowheart by Laura Kinsale. A top favorite of mine, a medieval romance with a pretty dark twist. The hero is an assassin who is not scarred but is like, very much into the murder part while being tortured. The elements I'd consider that you might like: they actually first met when she was like 5 lol (there's a ten year age different, he then left and they didn't see each other for a long time); she's 17 when the real story takes place; he forces her to marry him (she's a Lost Princess, basically) and takes her under his wing, mentoring her but also guarding her. Again, it is pretty dark--their first encounter is noncon, though they don't really recognize is for what it is because 1300s. He's really into her biting him... and tying him up... and such as that. Again, it's an all time favorite of mine; super gorgeously written and intense.
The Arrow by Monica McCarty. This one is another medieval. The hero is actually super famously beautiful so that's again a difference, but I think it might work for you because the hero takes the heroine on as his ward when she's like 15 and he finds her as the survivor of a massacre. He's her protector from then on, and she falls in love with him years later. He's resistant because she's Too Young for him and his Bloodstained Hands. Actually becomes a bit more similar due to a plot twist.
If you're down for a bit of a paranormal historical, Heart of Iron by Bec McMaster may be up your alley. The hero is the (virginal!) werewolf bodyguard of the heroine; very awkward and gruff and big and kinda shy but also capable of intense violence lol. She's a sparkly flirty debutante type (this is in an alternate Victorian London) who flirts with him and tempts him. He's always running after her to protect her, lol.
