“Can you tell us about love?” Hmm, well there's love of children Love of self Love of God Love of a partner And all of them have a different shape But all of them is the same in the end It's about sensitivity, it's about passion It's about unconditional giving of self to another person And there's love of humanity That's the love that is right now needed most Love of humanity I do love a good #throwbackthursday and now that I have your attention do me a favor and take a moment to stop, breath and remind yourself you’re worthy of a happy life without insecurities of the world. I love you and you deserve every bit of your own happiness. The Carters (Beyoncé and Jay-Z) released an album titled EVERYTHING IS LOVE on June 16 of 2018. It ranked number two on the Billboard Top 200 album chart. I am a huge Beyoncé fan and love hip-hop so I was ecstatic about the album. One of the first songs I heard from the album was not “APES**T” instead it was “BLACK EFFECT” at a barbershop. Even though I am only half black, I was able to connect to the lyrics that Jay-Z and Beyoncé were vocalizing. A link to the lyrics for “BLACK EFFECT” is below along with another link to the song. These lyrics have a deeper meaning and are powerful compared to other songs on the album. “BLACK EFFECT” starts with a man asking an older woman about love which is a loaded question. Personally, I have not seen a healthy black marriage or relationship. My parents have a strong interracial marriage and I have seen successful white marriages but not a black marriage. Our community lacks black love but this song’s intro identifies the importance of love. The lady talks about different types of love like loving God and children, but she emphasized the importance of loving humanity which she said is something the world needs the most due to the complex and racially charged environment. After the intro, the hook address police brutality which is something black people have always had to deal with. With the creation of technology like iPhones and other recording devices, white people see police brutality more than they did in the past. However, police brutality is brushed aside by some whites and some shame the victim. Black people end up being victims of crime and police mistreatment and brutality. As a woman of color, I am fearful of the police because you never know what someone is feeling or going through. All the verses after the hook described black stereotypes like being late, carrying guns, and the love for chains. “BLACK EFFECT” also includes references to things like having natural hair, whites appropriating black culture, and name drops influential people in African American culture. Another thing “BLACK EFFECT” does is remind me and other African Americans that we come from African Royalty and should not be ashamed of being black. Brian Younger, a writer for Pitchfork.com, stated that “BLACK EFFECT” is an ode to black excellence and use the song to educate people about black history. I think this is a song everyone should listen to but this song is another anthem for black people to enjoy and show our strength through.
