omg I need your thoughts on the terminally o line author culture bc ngl it makes my eye TWITCH, there are authors I deliberately avoid even tho I've heard their stuff is good bc they're like that 🙈
HHHHH oh good lord, okay, from how I see it, there are two angles on this, both aggravating and sad: the official decree one and the spontaneous ecosystem one.
The officious one is that the nature of publishing nowadays demands an author have an online presence. You need Twitter/X. You need to let every potential reader know your book is coming out. You need engagement through reviews and pre-orders incentives (if you buy now you’ll get a special keychain!!) and word of mouth assurances from your peers that yes your book is as cool as you say it is. You need a newsletter with links (more buying! more voting on lists that are simply popularity contests!) and promises you’re still working on the next thing, don’t forget about me in the morass of everyone else doing the same thing. You need an Instagram and TikTok now to post pretty pictures and videos because one or two authors made it big off this kind of promotion and now everyone thinks it’s the ticket to the bestseller list (sadly, it seems to be working). You need an OnlyFans (a joke but I do recall a twt spat that was a joke/not joke about how rupi kaur will always be more beautiful than her critics and people who took issue with the conflation of beauty with talent). At the end of all this, you’re basically an influencer, a content creator creating content for the content you should be focusing on creating, the finished novel. And the novel itself seems to be disappearing behind the masks used to promote it (fanfic-style tropes, moodboards, playlists, memes) until I now no longer trust the book that I’ll pick up to have any resemblance to the enticements that brought me here. I’ve seen an author or two complain about the stress all this self-promotion generates, but it’s become such an entrenched part of the industry, I think people just accept it. And thus spend too much time online hoping that if they tweet just a little more, produce just one more reel, maybe that’ll be the difference between a sale and no sale.
The other side of this, distinct but obviously connected, is the ecosystem created by this panic of being perpetually visible coupled with the fact that so many of the new authors came of age during the rise of internet fandom culture. That opinionated community mindset that blurs the line between anonymity and friendship is the lens they bring to their own work. I mean, it makes sense I suppose—if you love yelling about characters and words, why wouldn’t you do that once you start to produce your own? This really came home to me hearing about that reviewbombgate “scandal” and how people involved were in reylo circles and that was used to provide receipts. You’re interacting with your readers and peers about your intimate work but they are also all strangers. They will not always give you the benefit of the doubt, and now—as opposed to the past when maybe the worst that could happen was a handful of bad reviews in newspapers—you will either be tagged in hate reviews, sub-tweeted, explicitly called out, demanded to atone for your sins. It’s no longer the morality of consumption but the morality of production. Of course, the easy answer is just log-off, touch some grass. But that can work only when you and everyone else are separated by anonymous accounts or when you have no platform to maintain. As an author trying to make your livelihood from this, suddenly it’s do or die. We’re in a strange moment of authorship bringing the Internet’s echo-chamber and claustrophobic into the real world (this is a lie: publishing now is no longer the real world. But it looks like it) and thus you can kind of no longer escape things.
Will the average reader who isn’t aware of all these machinations care about reviewbombgate? Would a reader browsing at Target think about the controversies around Lightlark? Very likely not. But the impression I’m getting more and more is that the average reader isn’t the one buying all the books. Or shall we say—a bestseller’s status relies on bookstore stock. Bookstore stock is only huge when they know a book will be a good investment. They’ll only know a book is a good investment if it and its author has street cred based on booktokkers, bookstagram, bloggers and reviewers (have you noticed how many books out these last maybe 1-3 years have these kinds of accounts thanked in the acknowledgments? Yeah), and THESE are also chronically online people who will Know. And decide the cast of fate.
Honestly, @batrachised, I see why you avoid these kinds of writers, though I wonder how long it’ll be before the disease becomes epidemic.

Broke: Wingman Weiss and/or Wingman Sun
Woke: Wingman THE ENTIRE EVER AFTER????
Did your OTP have an entire Alice in Wonderland alternate dimension shipping them so hard it manifested in literal magic platforms and the sky changing into their signature colors and gardens full of white lilies- which represent rebirth- blooming as they kissed? No? Thought so.

People who claim that RWBY has "bad writing" just because they don't ship Blake and Yang irritate my entire being
Let me rant for a bit lol
1) they claim that it was "out of nowhere" or "poorly developed"
Have we been watching the same show? While I don't think it was perfectly executed (no story is), Yang and Blake are very clearly an example of the friends to lovers trope. They've cared about each other deeply from the first arc. They go through so much together, helping each other overcome trauma. This couple has a very solid foundation. Then, the nature of their relationship clearly shifts to become romantic in later volumes. They've been planting the seeds for it for years already.
2) they're mad Blake isn't with Sun even though they had a crush on each other in early volumes.
Have yall never had a high school crush before? It's cute, but that sort of thing dies out with time. Blake and Sun went their separate ways and haven't seen each other in a while. So much has happened in the story since the last time they saw each other. While I understand the criticism that Sun kind of disappeared without much explanation, so has most of the other characters from the Beacon arc. CRWBY has a lot of ground to cover in terms of story telling, and the episodes are short and each volume only has several episodes. My hope is that we'll get to see what everyone else is up to when the time is right, and Black Sun shippers will get some sort of closure. I've always shipped the Bees, but I respect Black Sun as a ship!
3) they claim that "this wasn't what Monty would have wanted" and that the writers "gave in to the threats of the toxic side of the fandom"
How do you know? Were you in Monty's brain? We'll never know (rest in peace, king). I'm sure Monty probably had an idea of where he wanted the story to go, and I'm sure CRWBY is trying their best to honor that. Also, stories evolve. I think CRWBY has created a vast and expansive world with interesting characters and a phenomenal plot. Sure, it's not perfect. But it's fun, and RWBY as a franchise has grown up alongside many of us, so it has a special place in my heart regardless.
I hope it's not true that people were sending threats to the writers to see their ships come to life. At the end of the day, these are fictional characters. Plot devices. No ones wellbeing should be threatened over that. That being said, the ugly parts of fandoms are often just a vocal minority. I think most people who ship the bees are just gays who love RWBY and love seeing wholesome wlw representation.
Also, Blake and Yang's romance isn't a huge part of the show (it's more so in this volume since they finally have a break from the Salem mess so they finally have a chance to work through their ~feelings~). So, it's easy to skip if you like the show but don't like the ship.
If you don't like RWBY, don't watch it. Point blank period. If it's such "bad writing," move on and find a different franchise to pour energy into.
(Honestly, it's screaming homophobia. Saw someone say it was an issue of "morality"... like what century are you in, bro)

not to think of pride and prejudices directors commentary of the 'im very fond of walking.' 'i know' scene, where joe wright says "he could have said 'you' there, it could have been 'i know you'" whilst watching far from the madding crowd, but! the way she pauses after saying 'i wish i could go, too' and they have a moment of just looking at each other in their own world. and im not the director but god. she could have said 'with you' there, there was an unsaid 'with you' and its absence was felt in the weight of the moment after. 'i wish i could go, too. with you.'

using my big brain skills, i will now use my band-o-meter to guess what instrument the basement boys™️ +others would play💥 i am totally a professional, expert at vibes n shit😎 each word i say is canon /j
Griffin
ngl, i can see him in the clarinets section. definitely a woodwind, no arguments on that. hes a lil squeaky (WHEN PLAYING YALL) but pretty good overall. probs sits at the end of the row. memorized all of the fingerings and can switch between them pretty well. THE BEST at fast paced pieces, will spontaneously combust during slow ones (honestly same)
Billy
i feel like he would play tuba or euphonium, leaning more on euphonium. at first, i thought he seemed more like an art kid, but now that i have the mental image of him playing euphonium, i change my mind. hes pretty good, part of an endangered species though. 💯💯 has complained about his instrument being too heavy, but enjoys just resting against ghe case whenever he brings it around.
Vance
Percussion. I don’t need to elaborate.
Bruce
first of all, definitely in the woodwinds (again lmao). i was thinking either a bass clarinet, oboe or a saxophone? if saxophone, definitely an alto. although, i am thinking more oboe/bass clarinet….. yk, knowing bruce, he probably plays all of em, or maybe im just lazy. we’ll go with alto sax. vance has totally made a ‘saxy’ joke about it (projecting cause my wife does that with himself)
Robin
I think he’d be a trumpet. yeah, he would. he loves that thing. he probably has blasted it on accident though so r.i.p woodwinds in the row infront💔 he probably thinks that he can hit high notes easily, so he tries to on the first try and fucking dies. hit or miss with fast pieces, he likes them but also hates them. has asked finney how to subdivide because he zoned out
Finney
same issue with bruce, but with clarinet and saxophlne (no hobo). then i thought about it and went, ‘yeah, he’d be an oboe’. at first, i was thinking of making bruce play the oboe and finney the sax, butttt i like this better ngl. part of an endangered species, only two other hobo players with finn🙏 god at sightreading
Gwen
looking back im realizing how indecisive i am lmaoo. so our two options were clarinet n trumpet. took me a lot of back and forthing until i thought, ‘hell yeah she’d be a clarinet’ so here we are. carries the clarinets, and is probably louder than most trumpets. she’s 50/50 on sight reading. she could be awesome at it or terrible, depending the piece. complains about eighth notes.
Amy
let me project for a second and just- ‼️‼️flute‼️‼️ damn i love me flutie patooties. anygays, she has more luck hitting high notes than robin (rip) but flutes are built like that, but she can hit them without trying. she shifts 294749103 times in her seat because flute can get uncomfortable (projecting some more). sits next to gwen and they compare what each of their pieces are constructed 💗 (i do that with my friends too lmao)

I am once again begging for the people who work on rwby to learn how to frame shit
Tumblr media
Blake chews out Batman for acting like he's alone and then storms towards Arkham Asylum. She walks alone into darkness while he's bathed in warm light next to everybody else
It's so contradictory. If they wanted to properly frame this shit, it should be Blake with her friends and in the light because she's enlightened and Batman swathed alone in shadows. As is, this frames Batman in the right (which he is) and Blake as going crazy
Either the artists rebelled against this shit by weaponizing the framing, like the animators of rwby did multiple times, or everyone who works on rwby stuff gets overdosed on stupid juice

can we talk about how in the beginning of the balance in how blake is introduced as this almost weasely obviously evil minor villain that is just a lackey for close knit? like even his imperium counterpart just cowers and listens to whatever Kody wants him to do
but the second he’s able to see a CHANCE at being able to achieve his plan, he drops his little facade and beats the shit out of elliot and kidnaps sunshine
it’s just how he so quickly swaps from being this pathetic cliche into an actual genuine threat to the other characters and story is just so. unpleasant. (as in i’m creeped out)
tbh this could totally just be erik trying to add a bit more flair to his character by scrapping his og personality and re-crafting him into more of an unexpected threat
but i like the idea of blake just. hiding in plain sight.
