Blink was obsessed with Mush when they first met. If you’re scared of girls that stalk people on Instagram, you better be running at the sight of Kid Blink. He would stalk Mush around the streets of New York, just trailing after him and ducking when he turned. Mush never knew.

This one’s probably the easiest. Morris usually sleeps in the middle, because that’s how he feels safest, and he’s small enough that Mush and Blink can just wrap their arms all the way around Morris and can still pretty comfortably hold the other. The only time this ever changes if Mush or Blink are having an extremely bad day. And, if that happens, Morris ends up on top of that person, and the other has his arms wrapped around them both.

c = comfort; when someone’s feeling down, how do the rest look after them?

Morris: When Morris is feeling down, the other two will wrap him in a blanket and hold him and cuddle up to watch his favorite movies. Mush: Mush is easy to comfort when he’s upset. Blink will make some food for the three of them, and Morris will crawl into his lap and hug him and hold him tightly and kiss him until Blink can join them on the couch with food. Blink: Blink is a little harder to cheer up. He likes to close up when he’s upset. He likes to lock himself away. Mush and Morris let him sit alone for maybe fifteen minutes, just to let his emotions de-escalate. I feel like Blink is the kind of person to, when in a super emotional state, say things he doesn’t mean to get people away from him. The kind to push people away so he doesn’t burden them with his problems. When they feel he’s calm enough, they join him in the bed and cuddle with him and tell him how much they love him, and they coax him out to the couch and cuddle him there (the change of scene usually helps blink get out of his head)

d = dates; what do dates look like? who usually plans them, or are is it a group affair?

I think they all plan dates. Occasionally they all plan it together, but more often than not, it goes something like this: 1: I wanna go on a date, we should go on a date. Clear your calendars for X day. 2: Okay 3: How should we dress? What were you thinking? 1: Details tbd.

And like the next day, they go to the others and tell them what the plan is, and they go from there.

k = knowing; who can read their partners like a book? is there anyone who’s got their walls up, even around their partners?

Instantly? Mush. Can read his partners like a book. Can read his partners so fucking easily it’s honestly terrifying. No one expects Morris to be in tune with Mush and Blink’s emotions. Like, Mush starts feeling upset, and Morris has a fucking spidey sense for it. Will come running from the other room like “Mushy are you okay? What happened?” Blink knows when something is wrong, but doesn't always know what it is

n = nights; what’s the nighttime routine like when they’re all together? Morris: Morris is always the first to get tired, usually ends up dozing off on the couch, and the other two take turns carrying him to bed (he honestly pretends to fall asleep sometimes because he knows that they’ll carry him). Morris has to brush his teeth as soon as they finish supper, because if he doesn’t, he won’t brush his teeth. Mush: Mush has an extensive skincare routine that he does every single night. After he does his skincare routine, the three of them cuddle on the couch with calming teas (or hot chocolate), and watch movies. He showers twice a day, once when he wakes up, and one when he gets home from work. He also makes sure the stove is turned off. Because they’ve had too many close calls with Blink leaving the stove on. Blink: Blink doesn’t have a set routine. He is chaos incarnate. He has to constantly be reminded to even change his clothes after work. Mush won’t let him in the bed without showering. He does two thing consistently: 1. Clean his bad eye, under his patch and everything, making sure it’s good and clean and not infected 2. He checks the locks on everything. He makes sure every single door and window is locked at least twice before he’s satisfied.

for starters, know that if this man was living in the modern age, he would be both a frat boy and a gym rat, and be proud of it. even as it is, he spends roughly twenty minutes fixing his hair (because “it needs to look right, blink, god”) just to shove it under his newsboy cap approximately thirty seconds later without a care.

his shirts technically had sleeves at one point, and he does have one (and I mean just one) shirt with sleeves for the winter, but if he’s wearing a shirt with sleeves, you can’t see his muscles. and if you can’t see his muscles, then what’s the point? don’t even get me started on the flexing. oh, dear god, the flexing.

give him a mirror and he WILL stand in front of it for hours (“do I look better like this? or like this?” “damn, look at that hair. imma get all the girls tonight, baby.” “no, wait, wait, the guys from brooklyn are comin’ atcha, yeah? then BAM- muscles! oh, oh, comin’ in over there! BAM! BAM!”). and don’t you dare insult him. no, no, no, he is beauty, he is grace, and he’s going to punch you in the face.

he also happens to be one of the only straight newsies (don’t ask me who the other one is, I’d have to think about it for a hot sec). he’s trans, and will IMMEDIATELY follow up that statement with a joke about how his biceps still look better than yours, so you could suck it. and if you insult his friends for anything (especially crutchie. NEVER insult crutchie), you’d better run, because as much as he talks about them, those muscles aren’t just for show.

also, he cries while watching sad dog movies.

Give me Newsies who developed or were born with disabilities over their time in the refuge and growing up in the streets of New York.

We obviously have Crutchie, who crushed his leg in a trolley accident during the trolley strikes, but how about the others?

Kid Blink, who's eye was cut badly during a fight and totally lost all vision in that eye, leaving a nasty scar where he was sliced. He jokes that he's secretly a pirate to the younger kids because he wears an eyepatch, but the real reason he has it is to hide the scar because he is embarrassed and ashamed of his scaring and how scary it can look.

JoJo, who was born with a vision impairment that makes everything extremely blurry through his perspective. Somebody always needs to read the headline to him in the morning, and he sometimes needs a selling partner to lead him in the correct direction without getting run over by a carriage.

Splint, who's broken her arm so many times and in so many different ways that it's practically unusable. It's covered in nasty scars and bruises and is swollen and bumpy from where the bone never fully set back properly.

Elmer, who deals with chronic fatigue and sometimes having to be dragged away from selling for at least a little bit because Spot can see that if he doesn't sit down soon, he will pass out from ache and exhaustion.

Albert, who lost most of his hearing in a fight at the refuge and has Katherine teach him and a few of the others some sign language so he can finally communicate as well as he can with the other newsies.

Saturday Nights Are For

Welcome to the Saturday Nights Are For Event Week! The week begins February 13 and ends February 20 at midnight.

The ship for this week is…Blush! All other related concepts- Blink-focused content, Mush-focused content, their individual stories- may be featured, along with the characters and general context of the Newsies fandom!

Acceptable submissions for the week include written works, artwork, and playlists (if interested in submitting a creation of another variation, please refer to the rules/FAQ or ask moderators).

There are no specific days for any specific AUs or themes, but some ideas and suggestions include: childhood best friends, soulmates, enemies to lovers, unrequited love. You may include any other characters or tropes, but please try to keep the focus on either the ship itself or the characters directly involved.

Due to the specificity of this week, please refrain from works that heavily feature another related ship as the main plot point (ie. Sprace, Javid, Redfinch). If it is present as a reason for angst, or as an entertaining side ship, that is acceptable. Please do not write a Sprace fic just because you aren’t a Ralbert fan. There will be opportunities for those types of work at a later date.

The collection will be posted February 6 on AO3! You may submit finished works to this collection before February 13, but they will not be announced or displayed until the week officially begins.

(I say this about all the newsies but it’s so fucking true)

fun fact- blink (or kid blink, depending what we’re referencing) is one of the only newsies who we know actually existed! he was actually the leader of the manhattan newsies, and his real name was louis ballatt. at the time of the strike, we can guessimate that he was roughly 13-14. he, ed “racetrack” higgins, and “crutch” morris led the strike until it ended in 1900 (there was also reportedly a “spot” conlon, but his leadership has only been mentioned once in all of the stuff I’ve read).

obviously, all of the newsies have nicknames that they go by. the reason for this is best explained in 92sies, where we’re told that jack’s real name is francis sullivan. changing your name was actually a very common and popular practice among the newsies, because it’s a lot harder to get caught/arrested if the police don’t know who they were searching for.

well, blink got his nickname because when he randomly showed up one day at the distribution booth, he was wearing an eyepatch on one eye, and the other would blink rapidly at the sun. he absolutely REFUSED to socialize and make friends, and that SCOWL (some people tried to give him a rather unfortunate nickname that reflected that lovely expression, but blink caught on faster).

eventually, he bonded with a similarly viewed newsie (mush), and he slowly started talking about his childhood, and growing up in the factories (which is how he hurt his eye- because of the faulty machinery- and the reason he was so unused to the bright sunshine all the time). by the time davey came around, and the strike happened, blink had become known as the guy who made jokes at the WORST times possible, and who somehow managed to come up with at least three different stories of girls he “hooked up with” in five minutes that could be disproven as soon as someone asked mush where he was.

mush was good like that.
