Top 5 favorite kpop MVs with queer vibes that aren't obviously queer (challenge mode: no repeated groups or artists)

i'm mostly talking about gender here and gender is a really difficult thing to talk about. i tried my best to put what i feel into words and i hope it turned out somewhat coherent. please just be nice

the order is probably based on how excited i was to talk about each MV

1. mamamoo+ - GGBB

so the whole concept of 'good girl/bad boy' is very familiar to everybody, it's something straight out of romcoms and jokes about relationships. it's also usually very straight and cis. but the way solar and moonbyul visually present this song gives it a twist. moonbyul isn't dressed in what would be considered strictly menswear but her clothes are still more masculine looking than solar's, same goes for their choreography moves, and the whole contrast is supported by the backup dancers. solar and moonbyul aren't really playing a girl and a boy but rather playing out the dynamic between the characters of 'the girl' and 'the boy'. which is a romantic and heavily gendered dynamic. they're performing femininity and masculinity both while still being clearly themselves and it's really pushing the idea of gender expression being a performance rather than something intrinsic to the person, something fixed and having only one meaning. they're just performing this traditionally very cishet thing in such a queer way and i love it so much

2. i-dle - TOMBOY

this one is kind if an opposite of GGBB. so there's this part in the song that goes 'it's neither man nor woman' and the choreography during this part is them flexing their arms. the lyrics and the choreography and honestly the rest of the song, too, combined create this caricature of gender non-conformity which weirdly still feels reaffirming. kinda like 'queencard' is a caricature of confidence which actually does boost your confidence. so this song feels like it's fucking with gender in a similar way to how GGBB does but instead of deconstructing familiar it constructs unfamiliar, if that makes sense. i personally get goosebumps every time this part comes up and i don't care how far-fetched this explanation might sound, it feels very real to me

3. irene & seulgi - monster

this one is pretty obvious. i don't think that 'it's a metaphor' argument is very convincing because if something queer is used as a metaphor it's still queer. it's a particularly bad problem with sapphic representation because people are so willing to reduce sapphic relationships to an accessory and a tool to get your point across instead of actually taking them seriously, but all kinds of queer representation do suffer from this. half of straight relationships in MVs are a metaphor for something but nobody assumes those characters are actually gay

4. bts - blood sweat & tears

i don't have anything specific to say about this one but the vibes are very queer in my opinion

5. dreamcatcher - bonvoyage

that one scene with siyeon and sua made me yearn for sapphic sci-fi so i think it does belong on this list :3

hi! i’m someone who’s kind of like a halfway tkkr ? i believe but like not fully quite yet ? idrk lol. but ik you’ve talked abt how one of the things that has made you believe in them strongly is the difference in how they look at each other in comparison to other members and how their looks are much more romantic/filled with emotion. but ig i haven’t rlly seen that yet ? idk like i see clips where i think oh wow jk is rlly looking at tae like he’s in love or something but then i’ll see similar clips of him w other members where he also looks super fond and full of love ?

but basically are there specific clips/circumstances u can think of that you feel showcase the way they look at each other being romantic/distinctly different than how they look at other members? like ones that u can look at be like “yeah they’ve never looked at any other member like that” ?

also ik you recently talked abt how the way they touch/don’t have physical boundaries is different and more prolonged. do you know of any specific moments/clips for that as well ?

Well... it's is difficult I suppose... because Jk does love the other members as well, so he would look at them with love in their eyes. I agree, there are instances where Jk looks at the others full of emotion. But it's not the same as how he looks at Tae at times (to me at least). Things like this are always hard to lay out in a tumblr post though, because there's just so so SO much footage and a lot of what we talk about now is subjective. What looks like flirting behavior to me might not look like that to you. I always feel context matters as well, and for me to lay out every moment I feel is flirting or romantic between Tae and Jk and moments between other BTS pairings are not... that would honestly take up time I do not have. I'll say a few things to kinda point at what I see though.

The staring is more intense and longer in duration. I feel like I'm on repeat, but the Tkk stare in the vminkook live is not to be rushed over. It lasted 6 seconds anon! Seriously, try and stare in the eyes of your best friend (or any friend) for that long (without telling them you're gonna do it) and see how comfortable that is. It is really long! It is not a lustfull stare to me, but it speaks of an intimate silent communication going on. And when you look at the context of that stare.. to me it has to do with them as a couple.

In this vid there's a moment at 5:34 that I feel is something. The sudden shift on their faces. I'm not sure what to call it exactly, but it's a something to me. In that same vid at 6:45 the smirk on Jk's face also tells me something. (I don't agree with all moments in that vid btw, but there are some nice ones).

Also... the times Jk gives Tae a full body scan and the many times they will litterally bite their lips while checking each other out (YouTube is your friend.. I swear it's all there).

When I talk about Tae and Jk"s physical boundaries being different. I mean I mean moment's like ITS when Jk just comfortably sat an Tae whilst playing a game.

Moments like this, where it's not just a handplacement, but rather a caress or an exploring motion (Jk touching Tae's neck when he arrived in BonVoyage would also be such a moment).

And sure.. there's moments when they hang of another member and where they cuddle with someone else.. but in general, they do it with each other way more.

Edit: just wanted to add the ‘no space couple’ in this. Because that is just so very true! No pairing in BTS are as ‘no space’ as Tae and Jk.

1. Futurama: I have watched futurama over and over again since I was a child. I can quote almost every episode with my sister and dad.

2. UNHhhh: I’ve taken many many many a long haul flight listening to Trixie and Katya talking about whatever nonsense. They feel like my go to buddies.

3. Theory Of Love: I have rewatched this show more times than I can count. I tend to skip the side couple scenes but every-time I’m sad I’m ready to cry with Third then fall in love with Khai again.

4. Run BTS: BTS just having fun and interacting with each-other? It feels like watching my family. I miss them so much. I can’t use Run BTS to practice Korean because I’ve got the eps memorized so not good for practice 😩

5. Naruto: I skip filler but Naruto still slaps. I got my YouTube in 2005 just to watch it and I rewatch it every couple years never regret.

6. Gavin & Stacy: so I love Nessa and just have great memories watching this show. I know James Corden is a piece of shit but so is his character in this so 🤷🏻

7. Bad Buddy: enemies to lovers and I adore Nanon. I’ve even shown this to my sister.

8. Nozaki-Kun: incredibly funny I’ve read the manga. Every character is amazing.

9. Not Me: thump thump goes my heart every time for OffGun and GawinFirst

10. BTS BonVoyage: I love watching BTS pretending to be regular people. ESPECIALLY season 1 and 2. The boys seem to really be enjoying the change of pace and scenery. BTS being happy is my life.

Honestly I bought one ticket to go to there Map of the soul tour and that was when they were actually still giving something. And then covid hit and I got refunded so I think it was a sign from the universe not to spend anymore on them 🤷🏽‍♀️ I can’t say I wasn’t still “supporting”them but after Butter it was all downhill. Also I haven’t watched all their content & the documentarys in full, mainly In the Soop, Bonvoyages & Run bts where they make it seem like they still love one another. Are they really that cold to Jimin 😭 It would explain a lot but even Hobi?

Just saw someone say motsp was the definite downfall of bts so we shall see. The universe is always working its magic.

And ohhh dude let me post this hoseok clip rn where he all but implied 'idgaf about jimin but I have to take care of him or he will literally kill himself". They're great at pretending to be friends, definitely, but as soon as you scratch the surface you see a sadness in jimin's soul that could only have been perpetrated by the people closest to him...... Thank god for his dad and also boyfie kunmuk, bts are DEAD to me.

Hi anon!

I don’t feel much for reacting and analyzing someone else’s post that they haven’t sent to me.

But I will say this:

When BTS films stuff, like Run BTS, Bon Voyage, BTS bombs, you get the drift…. when they finish that… the material isn’t at the endstage. Hours and hours of editing goes into it, to eventually produce footage that is sent into the world for us to see. What that means, is that choices have been made. One episode of BonVoyage for instance, while filming would have probably given them at least ten hours of material…. we don’t even get to see half of that. One episode is what… 50 minutes (from the top of my head)? So clearly a lot has been left out. It’s choices. So when people judge a ship (like ours) and say ‘there is no evidence that they were close (which hello, there definitely is) they are never paired together and whatever, those assessments are made on the basis of edited footage.. choices. The same goes for their ship when they say ‘they are paired up always, they are in behind the scenes material more than any other paired… that is also based on edited footage.. choices.

To me the choice of not showing much Tae and Jk footage aligns with how I would feel an in-band-relationship would be handled in SouthKorea. Showing an abundance of grand moments does not align with that.
