Borrowed Magic: Lost in Flight
There's something out of place in Wellwood forest, and a mismatched pair of someones chasing after it.
Bowman Leafwing wouldn't be the patrolsprite he is if he didn't investigate. It's hardly his fault that it leads to a much bigger adventure than he anticipated!
How could he plan ahead for travel through time and space?

Bowman of the Garden
Another GT July prompt is done! This one is "Garden", and any readers of Bowman of Wellwood might recognize that title symmetry. We have a brand new AU featuring Bowman Leafwing, living in a very different environment than the beautiful Wellwood forest. I do want to explore more of this AU, as it's very different from Bowman's origins. For now, enjoy a small sample of it!
~~~
Bowman Leafwing eyed the back of the Big House, where the humans sat talking and drinking their tea on the patio. It was a morning ritual of theirs‒tea on the patio, discussing their plans for the day. As the self-appointed scout sprite of the garden village, Bowman kept an eye and ear on these discussions every morning. If they planned anything out of the ordinary, he’d know.
It was a Wednesday, though. Not much would be on the schedule, and they confirmed it with their chatter, overheard from one of the bulky stone planters where Bowman hid. A normal Wednesday, meaning they’d go inside after tea and then be gone at Jobs all day. In the afternoon, the Lawn People would come by and cut all the grass in the yard with their awful loud machines.
So long as they didn’t mess with the landscaping or the greenhouse (and they never did), the wood sprites of the garden didn’t mind.
Soon enough, the humans finished up their morning tea and shifted in their seats. Satisfied that no more news of the day was forthcoming, Bowman backed away from the edge of the planter, further among the protective leaves of the fern growing there. Keen eyes peered out from the leafy cover that matched the leafy wings on Bowman’s back, and as soon as the humans had gone back into their tall, ivy-covered house, he turned away.
Tall boots of supple bark and sturdy cloth gave him quiet steps among the mulch and soil until he reached the other side of the planter; a basin big enough for a human to curl up in, it housed a verdant fern to break up the monotony of the lawn. Bowman, four inches tall and brown-skinned with deep green hair, blended right in among that curated vegetation. His dedication to the morning routine, to keeping an eye on those giants-of-the-house, kept him safe, but it also kept the others safe. If the humans talked of plans that could affect the denizens of the garden, Bowman Leafwing was the first to know.
Today, there was little to report. From the planter, there was a moderate stretch of empty lawn before the lush growth of flowers and grasses and shrubs covering the back third of the yard, mostly unbothered by human intervention and thriving all the same.
Among that chaos was home, where his little cousin and her mentor could use their gifts to tend to the plants, where his aunt and uncle could sing with the birds, arrange the litter of leaves and twigs like a miniature forest floor. No one spotted them there, for no one thought to look for a wood sprite, small and made to blend in among the greenery.
Bowman eyed a flowering shrub standing taller than the grasses and flower patches around it, as innocuous as any plant, and spotted a fellow sprite on one bough with ease. With one gesture, he confirmed they saw him, too. Raising his hands and wings, Bowman sent his report, or what might count as one, using silent signs that would look like leaves shifting in the breeze.
No news, good news. Lawn People later. Safe another day.
The other sprite acknowledged the report and ducked out of sight. Bowman smirked. That was his job done. If anyone wanted to find him after the morning scouting, they would have a task ahead of them.
One final glance at the Big House confirmed again that the humans had gone in and no one was watching. Bowman’s wings fanned open and his smile widened, and then with a leap and a powerful flap he was in the air, darting upwards like a leaf on a gale.
They had it pretty good, there in that garden. The verdant months gave them plenty of cover outside, plenty of resources, lots of sun on their wings. The winters in the greenhouse were cozy and close, without worry of the snow or the icy winds. They were safe from humans who never wanted to question why the growth in their backyard was so lush, year after year, and safe from worry over dangerous animals thanks to the nearly-overgrown wooden privacy fence.
Beyond that fence, though, was wilder land, not nearly enough to be a forest but full of life all the same. That less-tamed, wooded area, with its dappled sunlight and thick foliage and only the occasional reminder of the nearby humans, was Bowman’s goal. He darted over the garden, over the fence, and something wild welcomed him there.
Back the way he came, the Big House still stood peeking through the trees, but Bowman ignored it for the woods before him. In the other direction, someone else’s big human house would be waiting, but he wouldn’t get that far. He knew to stay closer to safety.
If he asked anyone else, he wasn’t really supposed to leave the garden without making it known. Bowman chose which rules to follow, and no amount of reminders had changed that over the years.
As he ducked and weaved around branches and through golden sunbeams, wind whipping through his wild hair, things felt right. Bowman belonged in the air. His wings, honed every day in his races among the trees and over the Big House, practically sang with elation. Every sunbeam they drank up spurred him to fly a little bit longer. His were the fastest wings around, and no member of the garden village could wrest the title away from him.
Day 26: Tangled
Tumblr media
Bowman of Wellwood by Nina Jamesine
The book Bowman of Wellwood is by @neonthewrite, and it is one of my favourite books ever!! The story is an exciting and inspiring adventure, and it was the first story that popped into my mind when I saw that today's prompt was "Tangled"! 😁
I'd recommend this book to any G/T fan, and I'm so excited to finally recommend this book on my blog!! The size difference interactions are GOLD, and scenes from this story live in my head! I love the characters, and the character development is really well-written! This story has a place in my heart. The book is absolutely worth buying, and I'm glad that it is on my bookshelf!! 😁
Hi, you don’t have to answer this if it’s spoilers or whatever, but in the brothers unexpected au, do Jacob and Sam ever go camping like Jacob does in his original story? Do they meet Bowman like in the original?
Huh, I actually can't remember! It's been a bit since we were spitballing ideas for this one, and the idea of wee Sam and younger Jacob discovering a teeny sprite would absolutely be adorable.
Can't say for sure if we'll ever have Bowman in that AU, but if we keep writing it, there's always a good chance for other OCs like Bowman to appear!
Will contain spoilers to Bowman of Wellwood.
You have been warned.
Tumblr media
Dear @neonthewrite,
I just bought and read "Bowman of Wellwood".
And my gosh.
Is it one of, if not the best G/T story I have EVER READ.
Read it in less than an hour; but it was the best hour of my life.
So as a self-proclaimed "terrible book reviewer that has no idea what he's doing and has never written an actual book in his life", I shall now gush about the book, what I love, and what I dislike.
Characters
My, my, my...
I first read all the other (free) Wellwood AUs with Brothers Apart, Sam of Wellwood, the various oneshots, etc. before BoW. When I first looked at Bobby, Jacob, and Chase, I thought they were pretty one-dimensional in some ways.
Jacob just seemed like a sprite/bitty loyalist, who "could do no wrong", Chase was a gremlin who, similar to Jacob, couldn't do anything wrong, and Bobby was just an arse. Static, manipulative, just another crack in the unpaved road; all the bad things. Logan, on par with his other appearances, was just as infuriatingly good at hurting the small people (His blood shall boil in the undying fires of Hell itself until he is nothing more than a lifeless husk of what he once was).
Bowman of Wellwood changes all of that, perhaps because (heh, no duh) this story is probably where they originated from.
Jacob's introduction, similar to Brothers Lost and the likes, is tainted by a bad first impression, and I have to commend how one-sided the actual "badness" of the interaction is, and how well it's executed; Jacob doesn't really think that what he's doing (up until the "wing-no-hurty" part) is really that bad... as the human. And unlike [Brothers] Lost, this interaction is directly between two characters, with the only Bowman being the "catalyst of the ultimate realization", which builds up Jacob and Bowman's characters (Bowman's values and Jacob's actions). The moment where Jacob chooses Bobby over Bowman? Oooh, it hurts.
Chase, unlike all of his other "cameos", only furthers the chain of bad impressions by being overly grabby. This contrasts the initial expectations I had of him and makes him that much better as side character. He can make big mistakes as well. The only real issue I found was that he didn't exactly do... much. Although yes, he isn't exactly a main character of any sort, his personality never quite shows any changes, and he never really gets "screen time" as Jacob's friend, unlike Lost, or as a separate character, like Chase in Lilliput; he just feels like comedic relief at times. Perhaps if they had an interaction that strengthened their relationship, it would make the part where Jacob almost dies that much more impactful. That scene, by the way, is (chef's kiss) beautiful and I cried. A lot.
Bobby, though, is the main highlight. His development is a day-and-night difference, and it really makes his other appearances quite drab in comparison. I love this Bobby, where he isn't quite a good guy, but he's on a path of redemption, and it makes him a better person in the end. Hey, I'm all for sad endings for the pseudo-antagonist, but I'm glad I didn't feel like beating him up at the end of the story. I do have to say though, I do wish the book went a little deeper into his background. As far as I can tell (I read this in an hour, mind you; I tend to overlook details), the only real motive that Bobby had to reveal Bowman to his grandfather was validation. To feel a sense of fulfillment that he helped his family. I mean, hey, good for him, but why does he want that sense of accomplishment? Did his family look down on him when he was younger?
Maybe I missed that detail, who knows.
Plot
The plot is amazing. I love how in most of the stories involving Bobby, he's treated as the antagonist, mostly, like in Brothers Lost and Bobby of Nowhere. But in BoW, he's brushed aside before he even really gets to do anything particularly terrible, because arses like Logan exist. Of course, "wing-no-hurty: the sequel" is still terrible, don't get me wrong, but it pales in comparison to Logan's actions, and emphasizes that Bobby is redeemable; Logan is not.
I love that as the story progresses, Bowman's absence in Wellwood only grows, starting with when he first sees the human's, to the end of the story. It shows how he slowly becomes more accustomed to the humans he trusts, and that they aren't really that different. And also it shows that they WON'T STOP TRAPPING THE POOR MAN OH MY GAWSH.
The humor is lovely. Period. Need I say more? Seeing the humans snark at Bowman, only for him to pull out a hilarious rebuttal out from behind his back is so perfect. The sprites' lack of knowledge on human things always gets me no matter where I see it, and there's always a... nice... Chase Lisong quip when it's needed.
The death of Lord Scar isn't really illustrated enough, though. He's an important part of Bowman's life, a figure that he sort of looks up to, that everyone looks up to. I sort of wish there was a scene for mourning and honoring him, maybe giving him another surname for defeating humans, like "Giantsbane" or something like that. If the sprites mourn and honor, that is.
This story, like all stories you write tend to have, has amazing, suspenseful moments. Logan's entrance? Unexpected (for when it happens, at least), and so well done. When Jacob gets shot? Expected - there was a mention of it in one of the other stories - but just as heartbreaking.
Prayers
Oh, the sprite/Spirit universe just got so much larger.
Bowman being revealed to be able to pray to the Water Spirit, only to seamlessly transition into him using it to save Jacob is just so amazing.
However, I will mention the abruptness - is that the right word? - of Prayers. While it's mentioned all throughout the beginning of the book, the actual workings of it seems to be unknown until it suddenly pops up when Bowman gets hurt that one time. And then when it's abruptly brought up to the humans, they have no idea what is going on.
Again, I might've missed the details where it's brought up.
So yeah, that's Bowman of Wellwood.
It's truly an amazing story. I loved it, and I'm sure anyone, whether they're in the G/T community or not, will enjoy it just as much. I may be a bit late to this party (the cake has already been abandoned and the balloons have already lost their helium), but anyone who hasn't already, please read this story. It's only five bucks as an e-book in Amazon.
Just read the dang thing; it's definitely worth it.
Day 16 – Favorite Character
Today's challenge is to share my favorite character, the fic they're from, and why you like them!
One of my all-time favorite characters is Rischa Songbird, from @neonthewrite's book Bowman of Wellwood. I'm a sucker for young, level-headed girls with extra abilities, and Rischa's empathic powers and the ways in which she uses them so earnestly are so wonderful! She's a fun character to read about, and so adorable to boot- hard to beat a tiny sprite kiddo when it comes to cute.
2020 Christmas card drawings I made for a few of my friends :) Top is Dean in mid transformation into his mersona lol chapter 12 of Sink or Swimchesters   I think I’ll redraw this at some point with how I want him to look as the end result. his toes are too wide imo. I redrew the feet a few times, what’s a few more? Second one is from the series written by @starr-fall-knight-rise of their universe, Humans are Space Orcs.  They wanted a picture of Admiral Vir’s service dog, Waffles. I put in Admiral Vir behind her, showing off his prosthetic Drev leg. The rest of him is mostly human lol
Third is for @nightmares06 of her boys from Brothers Apart The fanfic called, For Science  where Dean gets shrunken down to be the same size as his little brother Sam who had been cursed to be that size when he was a kid. A rare opportunity for them to see each other on the same scale, even if it’s a shorten one lol
And finally, @neonthebright asked for anything with her OC Jacob in it. I admit, I had a hell of a time drawing his face at that angle. I think Bowman the sprite would totally hang out in Jacob’s iconic hoodie because it is nice and warm and convenient for hiding if someone were to walk by the pair of friends.
Announcement
But for real this time
So...remember these guys?
Tumblr media
Art by @abookishweasel
If you don't, I announced a good while back we don't have to talk about how long ago that this is from the first, and as yet only, collaborative AU of BTaS called Borrowed Magic!
This was actually my first shot at writing collaboratively, which I've done quite a bit of since then with my good friends. My cowriter for Borrowed Magic, @neonthewrite, lent me her sprite guy to throw at my borrower and Time Lord to see if they stuck. This was huge for me, since one of my formative internet g/t experiences was reading Bowman of Wellwood back when it was still posted on DA, before she got it properly published. Needless to say, being friends and writing buddies with her was and still is a huge honor!
Anyway, enough of my gushing! I'm here to officially say that this is finally going to start posting! The first story is titled Lost in Flight, and it'll go up on Archive of our Own and post on Thursdays at 5pm central time, starting next week on October 5th!
Hope y'all enjoy! See you next week!
(Hi big fan of your writing I have your bowman of wellwood book!)
Do any of the sprites protest against Jacob being near wellwood. Do any hold any grudges against Jacob because he’s a “giant?”
( Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoy the book and my work! )
I am certain that there are a few holdouts. It's never a completely happy ending with no bumps in the road, after all; so even if Jacob is acknowledged by many of the Wellwood sprites as helpful and safe, he's still giant compared to them! His hands are really big! It's hard not to imagine being in trouble if he got ahold of you.
To assuage some of this, though, aside from some AU shenanigans I've written, so far Jacob has not seen the village yet. He doesn't want to seek it out, either, because he's aware that's a pretty big boundary for Bowman (and, he assumes, maaany other sprites). So if patrol knows he's coming, it's pretty easy for the more nervous sprites to just head back home to avoid the giant.
When Bowman goes back home after a Jacob visit, he probably does field some comments from these worrying types. Unfortunately for them, Bowman is not the type to take shit from anybody without a lot of snarky comments back, so they've learned not to bother asking him to get rid of the giant.
Day 6: AU
Bigfoot's a Hoax by nightmares06 and PL1
The fanfic Bigfoot's a Hoax is written by @nightmares06 and @neonthewrite, and it is based on the Supernatural TV show and the characters from @neonthewrite 's book Bowman of Wellwood. The fanfic is an AU where these two worlds merge, and it's really fun to watch!
I love this fanfic, and I have reread it SO many times!!!! The characters are amazing, and it is really well-written!! Scenes from this fic live in my head! The size difference interactions are GOLD in this story!! Before I read this fic, I wasn't usually into reading stories with giants (I read more stories with Borrowers and fairies and other smols), but this fic made me fall in love with it!
TW: Vore; minor character death; depression; anxiety.
Note: My blog is SFW, but some of the fanfics that I rec/link may contain triggering stuff. I'll try to include TW in my description and tag my posts properly. Please read the tags on AO3 before reading a fanfic! There's a small amount of vore in this fanfic. Also, I included depression and anxiety in the TW because it is written in a real and nuanced way, and I didn't want anyone to get triggered.
The original Wellwood pair
Tumblr media
Bowman and Jacob have come a long way, and I certainly never could have imagined they’d end up in something as prolific and fun as the Brothers Apart Multiverse! After Bowman fluttered his way into a case in A Lich of Sense, more ideas came. It didn’t take @neonthewrite and @nightmares06 long to imagine more stories with the plucky sprite and the Winchesters.
Of course, when Bowman’s involved, Jacob isn’t far away. He’s one of the biggest humans, and also one of the chillest, and sometimes he’s the only thing tempering Bowman’s wild nature. Once Bowman flitted into the multiverse, Jacob walked in casually behind him.
Where Bowman and Dean circle each other in endless snark, Jacob and Sam try to keep the peace. It doesn’t always work out so well for Jacob ... he and Dean rarely hit it off right away. Persistence with his own snarkmaster has helped Jacob figure out the ornery elder Winchester in a few AUs.
You can find the story from which Bowman and Jacob originate on Amazon or Lulu (or other online bookstores, if you’re feeling adventurous).
