Bowman of the Garden
Another GT July prompt is done! This one is "Garden", and any readers of Bowman of Wellwood might recognize that title symmetry. We have a brand new AU featuring Bowman Leafwing, living in a very different environment than the beautiful Wellwood forest. I do want to explore more of this AU, as it's very different from Bowman's origins. For now, enjoy a small sample of it!
~~~
Bowman Leafwing eyed the back of the Big House, where the humans sat talking and drinking their tea on the patio. It was a morning ritual of theirs‒tea on the patio, discussing their plans for the day. As the self-appointed scout sprite of the garden village, Bowman kept an eye and ear on these discussions every morning. If they planned anything out of the ordinary, he’d know.
It was a Wednesday, though. Not much would be on the schedule, and they confirmed it with their chatter, overheard from one of the bulky stone planters where Bowman hid. A normal Wednesday, meaning they’d go inside after tea and then be gone at Jobs all day. In the afternoon, the Lawn People would come by and cut all the grass in the yard with their awful loud machines.
So long as they didn’t mess with the landscaping or the greenhouse (and they never did), the wood sprites of the garden didn’t mind.
Soon enough, the humans finished up their morning tea and shifted in their seats. Satisfied that no more news of the day was forthcoming, Bowman backed away from the edge of the planter, further among the protective leaves of the fern growing there. Keen eyes peered out from the leafy cover that matched the leafy wings on Bowman’s back, and as soon as the humans had gone back into their tall, ivy-covered house, he turned away.
Tall boots of supple bark and sturdy cloth gave him quiet steps among the mulch and soil until he reached the other side of the planter; a basin big enough for a human to curl up in, it housed a verdant fern to break up the monotony of the lawn. Bowman, four inches tall and brown-skinned with deep green hair, blended right in among that curated vegetation. His dedication to the morning routine, to keeping an eye on those giants-of-the-house, kept him safe, but it also kept the others safe. If the humans talked of plans that could affect the denizens of the garden, Bowman Leafwing was the first to know.
Today, there was little to report. From the planter, there was a moderate stretch of empty lawn before the lush growth of flowers and grasses and shrubs covering the back third of the yard, mostly unbothered by human intervention and thriving all the same.
Among that chaos was home, where his little cousin and her mentor could use their gifts to tend to the plants, where his aunt and uncle could sing with the birds, arrange the litter of leaves and twigs like a miniature forest floor. No one spotted them there, for no one thought to look for a wood sprite, small and made to blend in among the greenery.
Bowman eyed a flowering shrub standing taller than the grasses and flower patches around it, as innocuous as any plant, and spotted a fellow sprite on one bough with ease. With one gesture, he confirmed they saw him, too. Raising his hands and wings, Bowman sent his report, or what might count as one, using silent signs that would look like leaves shifting in the breeze.
No news, good news. Lawn People later. Safe another day.
The other sprite acknowledged the report and ducked out of sight. Bowman smirked. That was his job done. If anyone wanted to find him after the morning scouting, they would have a task ahead of them.
One final glance at the Big House confirmed again that the humans had gone in and no one was watching. Bowman’s wings fanned open and his smile widened, and then with a leap and a powerful flap he was in the air, darting upwards like a leaf on a gale.
They had it pretty good, there in that garden. The verdant months gave them plenty of cover outside, plenty of resources, lots of sun on their wings. The winters in the greenhouse were cozy and close, without worry of the snow or the icy winds. They were safe from humans who never wanted to question why the growth in their backyard was so lush, year after year, and safe from worry over dangerous animals thanks to the nearly-overgrown wooden privacy fence.
Beyond that fence, though, was wilder land, not nearly enough to be a forest but full of life all the same. That less-tamed, wooded area, with its dappled sunlight and thick foliage and only the occasional reminder of the nearby humans, was Bowman’s goal. He darted over the garden, over the fence, and something wild welcomed him there.
Back the way he came, the Big House still stood peeking through the trees, but Bowman ignored it for the woods before him. In the other direction, someone else’s big human house would be waiting, but he wouldn’t get that far. He knew to stay closer to safety.
If he asked anyone else, he wasn’t really supposed to leave the garden without making it known. Bowman chose which rules to follow, and no amount of reminders had changed that over the years.
As he ducked and weaved around branches and through golden sunbeams, wind whipping through his wild hair, things felt right. Bowman belonged in the air. His wings, honed every day in his races among the trees and over the Big House, practically sang with elation. Every sunbeam they drank up spurred him to fly a little bit longer. His were the fastest wings around, and no member of the garden village could wrest the title away from him.
Van Life and dinosaurs. (Even if I'm pretty sure that the van is going to be destroy really fast)
I you search some talent, it's not here. Sorry. I tried my very best...
Bonus : Malcom's speech because it's CHAOS THEORY !
I wasn't expecting anything. I thought the Nublar six's storie was over and I'm so happy for this new serie. The Dinosaurs are in the real world and they're young adult now ! Creataceous camp was nice to watch but I really think Chaos Theory is going to be something awesome ! One of the win of Jurassic World 2 was to extract the dinos from the island and I'm sure Chaos Theory is going to exploit this fact as much as it can ! Thank Dreamworks and Netflix. See you in May !
PS : I wanted to add some detective wall beside Ben but I havn't enough talent.
PS 2 : English isn't my first langage. Sorry about the mistakes.
Bowman's root (Gillenia trifoliata), also known as Indian physic, is a perfectly stunning late spring perennial of Appalachia's upland woods, most often found at higher elevations. A member of the rose (Rosaceae) family, the plant has a long history of medicinal use, as both a laxative and emetic, first by Native Americans and then by white settlers. The trifoliate leaves are sharply toothed and alternate on red, branching stems. The white, star-shaped flowers have five sharply-flared petals of unequal length. A lover of partially sunny locations with dry to moist soil, Bowman's root is the perfect pollinator plant for a native wildflower garden and attracts skippers by the hordes, such as the silver-spotted skipper (Epargyreus clarus) above.
The Crime Society first appearing in 52 #52 2007 before properly being introduced in Countdown #31 2007. All members and implications for the wider universe will be named left to right. Before beginning it is important to mention that it is implied that this is not the anti-matter Universe seen in the JLA earth 2 comic because Kyle Rayner who participated in that state so below. Do to be inclusion of the Crime Society it may be an analogue of the Earth 2 Justice Society or the main Earth Justice Society of America.
Tumblr media
From left to right.
Johnny Quick joins Monarch's army and is abducted into the arena to fight otherworldly counterparts. He does not mention speed juice so assumably his powers are not related to it.
The Spectre's Earth 3 counterpart who is not named although it does imply two things. That he has a human house who maybe this world James Corrigan and he is always an incarnation of God's vengeance. A theory that I have is that it may be Eclipso because in his back story he was the original spirit of God's wrath and was only stripped of the role for being too cruel which very well may never have happened in world this cruel.
Superwoman is implied to be Lois Lane but we have very little else we know about her, in her appearances we don't even get an implication of the Ultraman and Owlman love triangle.
Power Ring they do not name which Lantern this is a counter part to I believe it is Guy Gardener's. Due to the visor replicating his bowl cut, his quickness to anger and his construct look like riot gear which would make sense if he came from a family of cops. Do to the Crime Society being a counterpart to the Justice Society it could be a counterpart to Alan Scott, but from there appearance this is unlikely.
Star Girl's Earth 3 counterpart who is not named although her predecessor Star Man counterpart Space Man outfit was seen in a display case during JLA Eart 2. With the lack of the Star Staff and the inclusion of a pair of pistols we can maybe head can and her name as we could potentially call her Spacegirl in honor of her predecessor or Shootingstar in reference to her pistols.
Tumblr media
Ultraman is heavily implied to have the same origin as his JLA Earth 2 counterpart, this is the only information we are given on him.
Owlman is implied to be Thomas Wayne Jr., He has been know to collect protect payments. The only other relationships we are aware is Commissioner Wayne and the members of The Riddler family. That being Riddler, Three Face, the Jokester and Dual Dent. All these relationships being antagonistic, notably he took enough offence to Jack Napier's comedy about him that he killed his secretary Harleen Quinzel and mutilated him which made him become the Jokester.
Green Arrow's Earth 3 counterpart who is not named although we have previously seen a green arrow counterpart known as Dead Eye in Justice League Quarterly #8. In regards to names that came after I do not believe he could be known as the Blue Bowman due to his outfit and The Archer would fit any Arrow wielding analog. From appearance we can assume it's Oliver Queen and with that that Queen Industries exist as a competitor to Wayne Industries. The extended Arrow family may exist alongside his home of Star City.
Tumblr media
Black Canary's Earth 3 counterpart who is not named in this comic although we did see a display case during JLA Earth 2 that displayed the same outfit with the name Whit Cat. We can assume it it not Dinah Lance or her mother do to the difference in skin colour.
Tumblr media
Hawk Girl's Earth 3 counterpart who is not named is unnamed but we know she does late for have a partner in later continuity known as Skytirant who is the counterpart to Hawkman. A potential name for her is Hawkwing who is mentioned as one of the victims of Mazahs during forever evil but never seen. With the many different origins of the Hawk Heroes there is rather an implication of reincarnation or interaction from the alien Thanagaruan race and the wider implications for the cosmos that come with there inclusion or absence.
Wild Cat's Earth 3 counterpart who is not named although personally in my own head canon his name should be the obvious alternative name of Mad Dog. The biggest change in Canon would be many people he has trained from Blackwing to Catwoman depending on continuity.
Now going into those not in the above image.
Annataz Arataz appeared in Countdown to Final Crisis #23 2007 and was kidnapped by Superboy Prime, the only other information we can gleam from her is she uses the same sort of Magic that Zatana which remains reference. Given her outfit she is likely not a classical magician but more of a modern Chris Angel mind freak sort of type.
Tumblr media
Booster Gold's Earth 3 counterpart appeared in Countdown to Final Crisis #16 2008 never named and does not show any physical differences to the original. Ray Palmer dubs him Dark Booster not knowing his real name and some fans have dubbed him Blaster Gold. Given his power set we can assume there is a version of the Legion in the future due to his Legion flight ring.
Tumblr media
Supergirl's Earth 3 counterpart appeared in Countdown to Final Crisis #16 2008 and is not named, but is assumed to be Ultragirl by fans given the U on her chest. The low cut of the U could be reference to Power Girl. The main question that arises with her existence is how did she get her powers, Ultraman of this earth was an astronaut abducted by alien after his death in space. Was she also an astronaut, was she abducted from Earth and all her and Ultraman even related?
Can you give me some recommendations of g/t? I readed so much that I feel like I’m started to run out. Also I still can’t believe Oscar is older then bowman. When kiddo Sam meet kiddo Oscar and bowman. Bowman was like 5 year old or so and Oscar is like 8. I still can’t believe that.
Thx for your awesome work and how much you did for the g/t community. I Feels bad for asking a author twice
I never mind asks like this! And of course, everyone feel free to add your own recommendations, we all love some good g/t to read, whether it be old or new!
I often recommend Deanzilla and its sequel, but they also put out some short stories based in that universe that aren't as well known:
Frozen Memories
Sneezes
I find all of mamajamallama's stories to be bangers, personally.
Peacejojo is another writer from back before I started, and they had some fun supernatural g/t fics (and they were the ones who made most of the manips that got showcased in Deanzilla, an amazingly talented artist):
Trampled Underfoot
The Parting Gift
Now on to fics I found on Fanfiction.net, also mostly from before I started writing.
The Incredible Shrinking Sam (not to be confused with my own story, The Incredible Shrinking Winchester. I actually changed the name of mine so the two stories wouldn't be confused considering the nightmares I gave people)
World of Winchestercraft Do you like DND? Do you like Supernatural? How about a dash of g/t? Then this is the story for you! (Side note that this is an incomplete story and DO NOT send messages to the author begging for a continuation. Respect their decision to not continue)
WELCOME TO MY GARDEN
Control
A Supernatural Wonderland
Now we get to the Archive of Our Own fics, which definitely took me on an entire emotional rollercoaster:
A Study in Pocketlock
25c Pocket Guardian Angels (Destiel)
The Short Notice series, by story_monger:
Short Notice
Diminished Expectations
Small Victories
Coming Up Short
Big Developments
Little Angels (BIG time recommend, but there are very dark turns in the story, so beware)
Then I am, yes, the Bible that teaches you of freedom (If Supernatural had angels like NeonGenesis Evangelion)
What a list! And while going through stuff, I was a bit sad to see some other fics have been taken down, so those are lost to us.
You can also find links to all of the fanfiction people have written for Brothers Apart on my wordpress page. There's a ton of amazing stories in there as well!
As for Oscar and Bowman, I'm always entertained! Bowman is just a wee flit compared to the others in the supernatural crew, but remember Jacob is also just a wee babe in comparison as well! Sam and Dean would be doing a lot of babysitting whenever they run into the others at younger ages :)
Feel free to add any other fic recommendations to the bottom of this post!
Mass Effect 2 replay, continuing exploration:
Haskins
-Hahne Kedar Facility – Yet another planet that looks like Earth. Bioware, I’m begging you: At least try.
-In Mass Effect 1, exposition was often given by VI. For example, the HQ VI on Feros that the Krogan commander argued with or the core VI on Noveria that told you how to fix things.
In Mass Effect 2, exposition is often provided by computer logs.
I’m sure it’s cheaper (no voice acting!) and it lets the writers get creative, but I’d like to see some VIs as well.
-Bioware did the creepiness factor well in these missions. They play out like horror movies.
-Another good mission for a vanguard. Charging until I made it into the door past the mechs went well. It played out much more smoothly than prior playthroughs.
Normandy
-Email from Kate Bowman. She assumes Shepard’s death was actually them going undercover. Reasonable assumption.
Salahiel
-Ekuna – This planet is baffling. If it’s in the Terminus Systems, why does the Council decide who settles it?
The Council is not supposed to have any authority in the Terminus Systems, that’s why they’re the Terminus Systems and not C-Space.
Putting that aside and assuming that the Council does have authority, I can understand why they acted like they did. Letting the quarians settle the planet after illegally doing so would set bad precedent. Considering how precious garden worlds are, the competition for them must be fierce – I imagine who has the right to settle what world is reviewed by other species in C-Space closely.
Frankly, it also makes more sense for it to go to the elcor, considering the heavy gravity.
I know this world is often used as an example of the Council treating quarians poorly, but I’d have to know more to accept that. The quarians did settle it without permission. What happens when other species settle planets without permissions? Have the quarians petitioned for other worlds and been denied more frequently than other species? What is the criteria the Council uses to decide who gets dibs on what world?
Sahrabarik
-This is the system you start the game in once you complete Freedom’s Progress. It includes Urdak, a brown dwarf.
Notably, despite using the term repeatedly in the planet description it never explains what a brown dwarf is. I suppose it’s saving that for you to ask TIM later.
Fathar
-Korat – In 2047, slavers grabbed all the children on the planet. It’s implied they just grabbed children, since that’s all that’s mentioned in the description.
Why? Even if they had a special order for children (and let’s not think of the implications of that) surely it would have been more pragmatic to grab everyone. They could sell the children to those buyers and the adults to someone else.
-Lorek – Originally this was an asari colony. The batarian Hegemony annexed it in 1913. Terminus warlords have repeatedly failed to claim it for themselves.
Again: How does this work? The Terminus Systems are not part of C-Space. That’s why they have a different name. So what is an asari colony doing here?
Considering how often this is coming up, my conclusion is that the separation between C-Space and the Terminus Systems that ME1 abided by was dropped in ME2. The Terminus Systems are now under Council jurisdiction, but in practice their authority is weak and inconsistent.
So in other words, C-Space is the “good” side of the tracks where order is maintained, and the Terminus Systems are the “bad” side of the tracks that are technically part of the same government body but the police are rarely seen.
-N7 Lost Operative Mission – Shockingly, it’s once again an Earth-like world.
-So the data Eclipse has proves that Cerberus was involved in the rachni experiments. How does Eclipse even know about them?
I suppose they would have made it to the rumor mill by now, given the number of folks that crewed the original Normandy and the squad of Alliance marines that fended off waves of them on Nepmos. As they say, two can keep a secret if one is dead.
Still, you’d think there’d be more noise about it. Rachni are the boogeyman of Mass Effect; everyone is terrified of them coming back. I’d expect there to be more mass hysteria at just the possibility, never mind it being true.
-The Eclipse are tidy. There’s no blood in the interrogation room, despite the body still being there.
-Interesting that giving the data to Cerberus is neutral, but keeping it for yourself is renegade. ME2 continues to push that Cerberus isn’t that bad, really.
What’s strange is that you can give the data to the Alliance. Do you contact them directly or do you go through Edi? If the latter, I’m surprised that none of the chains on her prevent her from sending it, or at least giving a copy to Cerberus as well.
-At least the Alliance (and Bioware) have an excuse for it not being relevant in ME3: Anderson says it will take years to decode it.
How's Jacob gonna explain amusement parks to Bowman? I feel like to Bowman, knowing that they exist, it would be nightmare fuel, even worse than the backrooms!! D:
My gosh. The overstimulation would make for a very frazzled sprite for sure. I have mused on this before though, like if they could guarantee his safety and we ignore for a minute that people would surely notice him fluttering around, Bowman would have such an interesting time at an amusement park.
Going on a roller coaster? Seems so dangerous and loud and scary. And yet. He might have to just hide in a pocket to try it. And then tell Jacob humans are crazy for inventing such a thing (and can we go again).
Playing games for those silly prizes? He doesn't care for the prizes. Just let him try to fly a ring over and drop it on a bottle, or drop a ball into a plinko. These games are silly and loud and clearly don't work right but everyone seems to like them a lot. Jacob, explain.
The food would seem ridiculously decadent to him. The meat options (hot dogs, those turkey legs you see at every fair/park, etc) would surely turn his stomach, but stuff like cotton candy and funnel cake would be delightful.
Most amusement parks that I've been to do have quiet areas, or indoor attractions, or even botanical garden type areas. Bowman would really appreciate a chance to calm down in such places. Maybe go see a magician perform and wonder how he teleported his assistant when Jacob has told him humans can't do things like that.
Poor sprite would probably never want to go to a place so crowded and loud, though. So Jacob only gets to describe these things to him, and probably get heavy skepticism in return.
Asexual Representation: Fic & Fantasy recs for PRIDE
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire
Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children No Solicitations No Visitors No Quests Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere... else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced... they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world. But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter. No matter the cost.
Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman
Rumi Seto spends a lot of time worrying she doesn’t have the answers to everything. What to eat, where to go, whom to love. But there is one thing she is absolutely sure of—she wants to spend the rest of her life writing music with her younger sister, Lea. Then Lea dies in a car accident, and her mother sends her away to live with her aunt in Hawaii while she deals with her own grief. Now thousands of miles from home, Rumi struggles to navigate the loss of her sister, being abandoned by her mother, and the absence of music in her life. With the help of the “boys next door”—a teenage surfer named Kai, who smiles too much and doesn’t take anything seriously, and an eighty-year-old named George Watanabe, who succumbed to his own grief years ago—Rumi attempts to find her way back to her music, to write the song she and Lea never had the chance to finish. Aching, powerful, and unflinchingly honest, Summer Bird Blue explores big truths about insurmountable grief, unconditional love, and how to forgive even when it feels impossible.
Beyond the Black Door by A.M. Strickland
Kamai was warned never to open the black door, but she didn't listen ... Everyone has a soul. Some are beautiful gardens, others are frightening dungeons. Soulwalkers―like Kamai and her mother―can journey into other people's souls while they sleep. But no matter where Kamai visits, she sees the black door. It follows her into every soul, and her mother has told her to never, ever open it. When Kamai touches the door, it is warm and beating, like it has a pulse. When she puts her ear to it, she hears her own name whispered from the other side. And when tragedy strikes, Kamai does the unthinkable: she opens the door. A.M. Strickland's imaginative dark fantasy features court intrigue and romance, a main character coming to terms with her asexuality, and twists and turns as a seductive mystery unfolds that endangers not just Kamai's own soul, but the entire kingdom ...
Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand
Who are the Sawkill Girls? Marion: the new girl. Awkward and plain, steady and dependable. Weighed down by tragedy and hungry for love she’s sure she’ll never find. Zoey: the pariah. Luckless and lonely, hurting but hiding it. Aching with grief and dreaming of vanished girls. Maybe she’s broken—or maybe everyone else is. Val: the queen bee. Gorgeous and privileged, ruthless and regal. Words like silk and eyes like knives, a heart made of secrets and a mouth full of lies. Their stories come together on the island of Sawkill Rock, where gleaming horses graze in rolling pastures and cold waves crash against black cliffs. Where kids whisper the legend of an insidious monster at parties and around campfires. Where girls have been disappearing for decades, stolen away by a ravenous evil no one has dared to fight… until now.
Plot Summary: Sherlock and John have their thing, but so do Mrs. Hudson and her tenant in 221C, Janelle, whom she affectionately comes to know as Nellie. While the pair may not go around solving murders, they do know a good puzzle when they see one, and sometimes solving a complicated riddle is the secret to unlocking some of life's true mysteries, at times offering them just as much excitement and danger as Sherlock's cases do. And there’s no one Nellie would rather unlock the secrets of the world with than Martha Hudson.
