Brian Barczyk, keeper of giant snakes in tiny drawers, has died. How should we feel?
I've been asking myself this very question, anon.
On one hand, the man did some really unethical stuff, pushed harmful information that was not correct husbandry, and allowed animals to suffer for his own gain.
On the other hand, he was human, as we all are human: prone to failings, easily blinded by praise, and willing to hide his mistakes in order to maintain a positive reputation among his peers. This is really common among that generation. I see the same attitudes in many big-name reptile keepers, TV personalities, and minor celebrities.
He was curious. He was passionate. He wanted to share his passion with others. I think he really truly did love his animals and the people around him, though that love was not an adequate replacement for proper care. He was arrogant. He was overconfident. He was flawed. But he was human.
He was afraid, at the end. He was in pain. Pancreatic cancer is not a gentle end. He saw his death looming on a fast-approaching horizon, and you could see it reflected in his eyes. Did he have regrets, do you suppose? Would he have done things differently if he had another chance? Did he believe in an afterlife, and did he feel the burden of his transgressions as he prepared to meet his gods?
I can tell you how I feel at this point:
A little sad that a fellow traveler on this Earth died in such an awful, painful way. A little disappointed that he's now a martyr of reptile keeping. A little grateful that he helped to push the hobby into the public eye and out of the fringes. A little hopeful that we'll continue to learn, grow, and do better than he did.
I can't tell you how to feel, though, or whether to feel anything at all. That's up to you.
Regardless, I hope his last moments were peaceful, that he felt loved instead of scared, and that he was not in pain. That's what I want for everyone.

Personally I think the word "abuse" is more appropriate but I don't want 50 old man reptile keepers to come after me for not sucking Brian Barczyk off. Also I was looking for some info and noticed people actively celebrating his imminent death, which I won't judge, BUT like, him dying doesn't help the animals at all, they're still going to be in the exact same situation.
Also also: so tired of the idea that you have to respect people just because they've been around for ages. You expect a new reptile keeper to do research, read up, continuously educating themselves so why wouldn't you expect the same from an established keeper? "Not as bad as before" is not the same as "good"

i wanna share my opinion on brian barczyk rq cuz i have a few things to say lol
to preface, i wish him and his loved ones the best and i hope he recovers smoothly.
firstly, i think a lot of the things he portrays in his videos are extremely unproductive. i dont think its a good look to be associating with people like the paul brothers, or mr beast, or emulating their energy in any capacity when it comes to live animals. they arent props, they arent objects, yet it seems that Someone on his team thinks its a good idea to jump, scream, and shout when the snakes, that they work with DAILY, do anything snake-like. i dont think ANY person with reptiles should be doing anything like this, if any animal already has a stigma around it, it helps absolutely NOBODY to sensationalize them the way his staff do.
second, i originally wrote a little blurb in the preface about how i think hes done a net good for the reptile community, but honestly thats out the window. id heard murmurs in the past about Blatant animal abuse, but i didnt look into it for myself, until now. im gonna link a short video below going over a Very small amount of what hes done. needless to say, i am not a supporter or a fan. ive tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, ive been on the fence about my opinion on him and his content for a couple of years, and i really truly wish id looked into it earlier.
youtube
nothing will deplatform him and its not my intention to, but honestly it makes me wary of the creators that i AM a fan of that have shown support for him (beyond his fight against cancer). i dont think any of what hes doing or has done is helping the reptile industry/community, the second you knowingly let your animals suffer you are doing a disservice to everyone involved. its so deeply saddening to see someone get so far especially hen he has OPENLY mistreated his "beloved" animals, and it really REALLY doesnt help that he absolutely has the means to take proper care of his animals but chooses not to. IMO, the only good "pet-tubers" are the ones that share educational content, and there is no education to be found on his channel. his videos are just as bad as family vlogging in my eyes.

On one hand, Brian Barczyk was a human with family and friends who suffered at the end of his life.
On the other hand, he put his animals through far more and he was a plague on the community.
I'm not celebrating, but I do hope those animals find better care without him.

What is your thoughts on Snake Discoveries process of cutting eggs? They let them pip and have a few days but any that haven't pipped they then cute a small hole manually and leave the eggs again. I don't think they've ever forced a baby out of the egg but sometimes i wonder if it's necessary or if they're doing it just so they can guess what pattern they can see
I'm not a fan. The fact they do it so often (with every single clutch it seems like) just screams impatience to me, it's not necessary and I really think they're just doing it to get an early peek at the hatchlings' morphs.
Egg cutting is sometimes necessary, but the cases where it's needed for the health of the baby are rare. I only recommend cutting eggs if they're either past the expected pip date and haven't pipped yet or if most hatchlings have fully hatched except one hasn't pipped yet. Either of those scenarios would mean something might be wrong and the hatchling might need help. Otherwise, egg cutting isn't necessary.
Snake Discovery at least don't completely pull the poor babies out of the eggshells before they've even pipped (looking at you, Brian Barczyk), and cutting at the stage they do isn't likely to be harmful, but, like I said, it's just impatient and isn't needed.
