“I told you that religion is triggering for me, so you just shouldn’t bring it up around me.”

Okay, but, what does that mean? What counts as ‘bringing it up’?

•if you ask me to hang out and I say I can’t because I’m going to temple/church/gathering that day, is that ‘bringing it up’

•if I say a prayer under my breath before we eat, is that ‘brining if up’? If not, then what level of volume makes it too much? If others at the table pray with me, is that okay? What are your actual boundaries with it

•is saying ‘oh thank god’ or ‘fuck god, how dare he’ too much?

•is me talking about people I meet through religious gatherings ‘bringingit up’

•am I simply not allowed to speak about knowledge and wisdom I gained through engaging with religion? With any religion? Because that would mean I can’t talk about most of the stuff I talk about. My understanding of disability, race, class, gender, ecosystemic living, farming. It’s all informed by many knowledge systems.

•how are you even defining religion? To me, ‘religion’ is a system for by which one can pursue knowledge and community. That includes the Sciences and Buddhism and Christianity and Judaism and Anarchism and Essentially most ideologies. That’s not everyone’s definition or it, and that’s fine, but how can you ask me not to talk about something that you won’t even define?

•Which religions am I supposed to avoid mentioning? What holidays can I not decorate for and celebrate? What foods can I not cook? What gifts can I not give? What explanations for my actions should I not say?

•is talking about the marginalization of a religious group just completely off the table?

“Just don’t bring up religion around me”

But everything I do is done religiously. All the teaching, all the caring, all the cooking and the cleaning, all the sex and the love and the crying. All the joy and all the pain.

How can I exist on this earth with you, in this home with you, if my existence is too triggering for you to face?

Should I just hide myself away?

Should I strip myself of all meaning, purpose, knowledge, and joy, just so you don’t have to face your trauma?
