Thoughts on witch shows and vampire theme stories?

Conceptually, I love both of them. I was the sort of kid who spent a lot of time playing mermaids in the bath and witches in the backyard with my sister, so any story that really leans into the magic of girlhood and all the ways femininity can be a dark sword through a day is something that automatically appeals to me.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of stories about both are pretty lazy though, especially because it was such a fad for a while. So many books and shows and movies that came out for a while felt like repackaged adaptations of either Twilight, Buffy or Charmed, and while I think that's changed a little over the years, the tropes those stories established feel - for better and worse - still pretty embedded in modern supernatural storytelling.

That said, I've watched a few great movies lately, particularly about witches - The Love Witch (2016), House (1977), and the incredible documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: a history of folk horror (2021), so would highly recommend those!

Atm I always watch ER after 3 at night. (because that's when I'm trying to have my brain calm down and hoping my sleep meds work) But I'm close to season 13 and it's til 15seasons.

Hi Monica! Love that you have the same name as one of my favorite sitcom characters :) I was curious how you'd rank the BtVS seasons and the AtS seasons from the one you love most to the one like you like least? For BtVS, I think I'd go S2, S3, S1, S4, S6, S5, S7 (so validating that you and one of your anons dislike season 5 too!) For AtS: S1, S2, S3, S5 and S4. Those are just my preferences, but obviously even the seasons I'm less enamored with have a few great episodes!

BtVS:

Season 2: To me, this is the best season. It has the best villain, not because Angelus is like super deep and interesting but because the conflict between him and Buffy and how Buffy is transformed is so good. Angelus made BtVS what it is. The season also has so many amazing episodes, the characters and ships are great, and even the filler episodes have their charm.

Season 3: I think this season is quite overrated tbh. I don't find Faith interesting and The Mayor is fun but not a compelling villain. Thematically, it's much weaker than season 2. Still, it has lots of standout episodes. It's just kind of shallow? Imo. Also, doesn't feel very cohesive.

Season 1: Love this season. Lots of great episodes, so charming and fun. In a way, I think it's deeper than most of season 3.

Season 6: It has lots of ups and downs, but it does have some strong episodes and themes. It's not boring anyway.

Season 4: It has some great episodes, but it's poorly executed. It's hard to embrace the new setting and it's hard to connect with the characters who feel like strangers to me.

Season 5: In theory, it should be a great season, but it's so boring and depressing most of the time. The characters don't get along much, Glory is annoying, the stuff with Riley is blah. I can't even remember most of the episodes because they just run together.

Season 7: Truly a shit season, but it doesn't start off bad.

Our ranking is the same except you prefer season 4 to season 6!

AtS:

Season 2: Absolute masterpiece up until, and including, Epiphany. Watching Angel's dizzying downward spiral for the first time was the most thrilling and satisfying experience I've had as a viewer, like, ever, and I'd give anything to feel that high again. I felt that shit in my soul. No show has ever topped it for me. Angel was so relatable, there was no one I understood better. Too bad the writers massively fucked it all up with the abrupt shift in tone after Epiphany. That's when season 3 unofficially starts to me.

Season 1: So many amazing episodes, especially the flashback episodes or the episodes that dealt with Angel's past, plus IWRY and the Faith episodes, of course. I love Wesley and Cordelia's relationship, and Doyle was great too.

Season 4: An absolute mess, but conceptually and thematically so interesting. It has so many brilliant episodes and arcs. It's really a masterpiece with a side of shit soap opera. Honestly, it's pretty much tied with season 1 to me. It's cohesive and accomplishes a lot more than season 1 even though it's maybe less rewatchable.

Season 5: Doesn't feel like an Angel season at all. Give me back Tim Minear, and get rid of the BtVS writers and Spike and Andrew, please. Still, Wesley's arc and Illyria are genial and Not Fade Away is the best finale I've watched. Shout-out to Origin as well - I love that episode to bits.

Season 3: The Darla, Dark!Wesley and teenage Connor arcs are great, amazing even, but everything else is crap. Angel's a moron half the time, Cordelia isn't Cordelia and some episodes are yikes.

I see our Angel ranking is very different! We only have season 5 in common. Are you a Cangel fan? Or a big Cordelia fan? Since you like season 3, and season 4 not as much?

not the same anon, but OMG I'd love to know your thoughts on Buffy! But please keep in mind that the show only significantly improves from episode 2x13 onwards (with seasons 2, 3 and 5 being the best ones, at least imo). I find season 1 to be underrated in many ways, but it's certainly not BtVS at its best.

Buffy initial thoughts then!

I thought I'd be more turned off by the 90s of it all but I just keep in mind that the show is now 25 years old, and since like BtVS I too am a child of 1997, I'm not going as hard on it. In a way it really reminds me of that Charmed vibe, and I love Charmed with all its dated-ness. Sarah Michelle Gellar is stellar and I thought she'd have been older during the first season but she was only 20 which is fine. Some of the actors playing high schoolers were deffo 30 but not the main ones as far as I can tell.

Interesting that you say there's a significant improvement after 2x13, I'll keep an eye out. I thought it'd be harder for the show to keep my attention in these very early episodes but no, I'm liking it so far. Only on episode 5 (or already, depending on your perspective) but it's all good so far. Obviously many things are dated but I'm lenient due to the 1997 of it all. Sometimes it's easy to guess what will happen as TV in general was more formulaic in the 90s but I'm seeing already how the show does play with tropes and does the unexpected in fun ways. It surprised me in the very first scene!

Idk if I should do like character impressions, let me know haha. I'm glad to see Charisma Carpenter, or as I know her Kendall from Veronica Mars. I know this will be shocking to all who follow me, but I have a soft spot for mean girls. And great to see Alyson Hannigan, of course, but I was well aware she was a major part of this show.

There are a few things I know about the series already, inevitably since it's a huge pop culture icon and I have been around from its start, but I'm happy to go into with at least somewhat fresh eyes. I guess liking season 1 just fine means that I'll really enjoy "BtVS at its best" haha. I'm sure it will take a while to get through the whole series but I'll keep you periodically updated, if you'd like. I also have no idea whether I'll wanna watch the spinoff, for now I'm staying with the main show.

Omg coming at me right with tough questions haha xD I have so many characters I love like from video games or anime/manga (lightning from ff13 or Selan from Lufia or Sailor Moon or Kamui from X) BUT I don’t write animated characters and never will. My other favorite character is Jon Snow but he got ruined so much in the last season that I lost all interest to ever write him. Also I love Harry Potter but I wouldn’t write his character either cause he doesn’t fit to the kind of content I like to write. I wrote Prue Halliwell from Charmed for a while cause I have so much respect and love for Shannen and Prue. I would say she’s one of my most loved characters that influenced me the most and Buffy also is very high on that list, but I think I wouldn’t write them anymore cause I just feel good with my messy man and that one very messy OC girl I have 😌

You know I actually started writing a mha kacchako fic that was intended to be a Halloween story. It was gonna be like Teen Wolf meets Charmed and involve werewolves, witches, ghosts, and a whole slew of other monsters but set in a normal, not-super high school.

The main plot was that Ochako gets tired of Bakugo bullying Midoriya, so she casts a spell on him to change his attitude. But she’s only ever cast like three spells before - and she can’t read Latin - and so her enchantment turns out to be a very powerful dark curse that turns him into a werewolf for three night on the full moon.

The curse also opens a portal in an ancient Japanese maple tree to the shadow world, and monsters start spilling through.

The fic was going to feature the mha girls being in a secret witch coven - at school they are the Book Club - and zany adventures like an episode of Buffy. They have to figure out how to cure Bakugo, close the portal, and still somehow find a date for the seasonal autumn festival.

I wrote like 6 chapters of this, but then my writing style changed so dramatically and I just don’t have the motivation to start over.

Maybe I’ll do a quick series about this for Halloween 🎃

Peu importe l’histoire de Natasha Knight, vous serez transporté, bouleversé, charmé… Elle nous plonge dans CHACUN de ses univers, avec des personnages poignants, des histoires intenses, des émotions vives… Je suis tombée sous le charme de sa série « Les frères Benedetti », alors je savais que j’allais aimer sa nouvelle série; sa plume intense, surprenante, violente, ardente… Tout simplement pétillante. C’est un nom que je vais chercher activement, tout comme celui de mon auteure préférée : Maya Banks.

Oh wow, those r good shows.. Charmed is my favorite though.. n yaaayy we have the same favorite character! I loooooove Piper! She is so cool n calm but she is the best when she is angry or panic.. i love how powerful she is as the more season she is in and when she is pissed. I think she has been through the most compared to other sisters.. the episode 3 or 4 in season 4 when she is so sad after Prue died, always make me cry no matter how many times i watched it. Her acting is great. I love paige too.. she always trust n follows her guts. To be honest, i like the episodes after season 3 more.. i meant it's sad when prue died, but somehow the episodes are better after all 3 seasons..

My favorite memory in highschool? Hmm i dont know. Im just glad that in high school is better than junior high because i got bullied in those years n it was really bad..

I love the memory where one time the senior walks to our class n one of them points at me n the other says thats her? Turns out i was the talk around the senior because i got 100 or an A in French exam. I dont know how they found out about it.lol. i also had the memory that i represent my school in an english debate match between schools. I'm on season 7 of Buffy and I still cringe whenever Spike comes on screen because his accent is SO terrible. I look away whenever they kiss. It gives me the same feeling as Scully/Skinner. I do not understand this ship. Please explain!

I wish I had an intelligent answer for this but tbh most of it for me is that old thing about a bad boy with a soft heart and a good girl with a dark side and the fact that they don’t want to want each other—they CAN’T want each other because it’s against the rules—but the thing between them is more powerful than their convictions and their willpower and even though they’re SO bad for one another they’re also so good for one another and also... spike hot

Changing thoughts

I’ve been thinking about how Stucky became such a strong phenomena- to the point that it is the biggest pairing, still, in the MCU. To the point that mainstream news outlets actually acknowledged it.

Why does it work when others don’t?

I think it had a lot to do with the cultural zeitgeist of the time, along with how Avengers was trying to avoid Stony at all costs, plus how Steggy was never meant to be an endgame ship. (haha. I mean, well, it wasn’t meant to be who Steve ultimately wound up with)

I think we can all agree that Bucky Barnes was never meant to be a character that had much invested in him. His only purpose was spur Cap on to heroism by being his emotional stakes and motivation.

And here is mistake the first: Bucky had more to do with Steve’s story than anyone else. Shipping, as a phenomena, is usually the result of two characters whose individual stories cannot be removed from the other. It’s a cornerstone to a good romance, and why bad romances usually fail the sexy lamp test. If you were to replace Bucky with a sexy lamp, it wouldn’t work, because it couldn’t do what he does. On top of that, without Bucky, most of Steve’s important story beats just wouldn’t have happened. He wouldn’t have met Erskine, he (probably) wouldn’t have gone to rescue the 107th (matter of debate, though without Bucky it wouldn’t have mattered as much to the audience) wouldn’t have gone on his roaring rampage of revenge to stop Hydra. Bucky being there was what caused all of that, and his choice to remain at Steve’s side is what brought about Steve saving the Allies. You could take out any of the other supporting characters- Peggy, Howard, Philips- and Steve’s story would still have gone roughly the same. Erskine is the only exception, but he was the mentor figure.

Now, I kept wondering- why not Peggy in this role? Bucky represented all Steve knew before the serum and the little guy he was before, the only piece of his normal life left, and the only precious person who was NOT a (an intended) potential love interest. There was no way for Peggy to have met Steve before the serum, though (kinda bullshit, its their story and they could write it however they wanted) and Peggy’s fusion with Cynthia Glass is known. I don’t know why they left changed Peggy into a person meant to be seen as purely heroic out of her Nazi Spy persona, but left so much of the spy persona there. The spy persona would have been far more interesting than what we got. Peggy was a girlboss/girlpower fantasy of the type that was popular in the mid 00s, a legacy of Buffy, Xena and Charmed. Perfectly beautiful and composed, nearly flawless and well out of the hero’s league. The fear of letting Peggy appear weak, with questionable moral judgement, I think, was something they were afraid of introducing for fear of Peggy drawing a particular type of criticism. But in doing so, they created a character who had almost no direct importance on the plot. Someone else could have let the 107th slip. Erskine would have made more sense to go with Steve to Operation Rebirth. Howard didn’t need Peggy there to offer to fly the plane. There was nothing there for her to do that only SHE could have done- except be a spy. Be a spy and that would have been far, far more interesting for her. It would have given her an active role instead of a sexy lamp, which... yeah. She was. But the moment she came on the scene was one where they would have wanted to avoided letting their lone female character be a sexy spy to lure in Steve, and thus the story role that would have normally gone to Peggy got dropped on Bucky.

The second mistake was to avoid Stony at all costs. I’ve mentioned this before, but the antagonism between Tony and Steve is not par for the course in the comics. There, Stony is a juggernaut ship, because there is a mountain of respect and friendship, two people enjoying each other along with just enough conflict that they will fight. It’s why Civil War could be viewed as a tragedy there (despite how shit the story was) when it barely made sense, and had no emotional stakes, in the movie. M/M shipping is not something the MCU wants. Ever. We finally got a kiss, yay, but it is after 10 years of waiting. They had to take pains to keep any actual ship tease off screen- and it shot the franchise in the foot. Part of what makes the Avengers a good comic book, or cartoon in those iterations, is the found family dynamic. They didn’t want to show that because any soft feelings between two men can bring out the shippers and again, didn’t want that. Bucky, however, they also had to age up because a child sidekick in WWII would have been unacceptable. And look, conveniently, Bucky could be fused with Steve’s actual childhood best friend that we can’t include because he’s Jewish and queer! So we turn his job into Bucky’s, and Bucky no longer is the teen sidekick, can STILL give Steve buckets of angst and manpain like OG Bucky did- but since Stucky was not a flagship pairing from the comics... somehow this just never occurred to them?

(Honestly, I do ship them. Not kid!Bucky, but WS!Adult!Bucky and Steve? Who is ageless and been through so much stuff on top of everything else? Yes, yes I do!)

Lastly, Steggy was never meant to be Steve’s final romance. And I can’t say I know if Sharon was intended to be or not. Sharon should have gotten a lot of the story focus was have with Natasha in WS. There was no purpose for her to be there- in fact, she played the same role Peggy did. As in, roughly a sexy lamp. Her role had been reduced to the point that she took up a lot of filler space instead of focusing on other characters. The same thing happened in CW, but no one on Team Cap got enough time in that movie, but she didn’t seem to actually be doing anything there important at all. Just an informant, which could have gone to Natasha or even Sam. Neither Carter got enough story focus to actually make a believable romance, or to hold the attention of most shippers. Bucky still remained Steve’s main motivation throughout his movies, when that is typically the role reserved for the Most Important Purpose (aka the love interest, if she’s not right there in his shadow the whole time. They need to influence each other. That’s what makes it believable)

We have interviews where the writers were disparaging Peggy, ffs. She was never meant to stay.

But at the end of the day, it was a result as much of what they didn’t do as much as what they did do that made Stucky popular. And it bugs me, massively, that no one ever had the balls to capitalize on it.

Thank you for this fun question! If we go for an umbrella definition of a costume/dress-up party, then that is certainly a thing in the places that are not as tight with their resources haha.

Charis would be proper impressed. She has a well-curated style, her clothes have complex cuts, so an MC that shows attention to detail in their costume would have her floored. This choice, however, leaves her very reluctant to engage in PDA until they once again look like nothing but themselves.

Priscilla is likely to get wind of their plan, and then there is no other choice but to go dressed up as them to complete the set. She would do her best to replicate their mannerisms and humor, keeping it as in-character as is possible. If a possibility presents itself, she’d ask them a ship maintenance question or two during the evening, because, “my Priscilla Ward would know this, you see :)” (extra points for knowing the right answer).

Kade is a kind of person to slap a sticker on his regular outfit and call it a day (think Oz's costume in Buffy), so should MC show up dressed up as him...they would end up looking like quite a pair! He would take the longest to understand who they are supposed to be, but as soon as he does, teasing ensues: it is only natural, after all, that they chose a costume of a “better pilot” (further banter is MC dependent).

At first Marley is taken aback: this is something he would not expect in a million of years. But this is an occasion, and so he must act accordingly. He promptly gets over it, and the gimmick of the evening becomes pestering the MC (who represents him) where his charming/brilliant/cool/renowned partner is and how much he would like to meet them, preferably some time soon.
