Mutant Mayhem Hype!

Hi everyone!

So today is a big day: The first official teaser trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was released! The trailer will be linked in case you haven’t seen it or want to watch it again. But I wanted to just share my thoughts on the trailer and share my hopes and dreams for this movie, which will all be under the cut.

First and foremost: I am so excited for this movie. Everyine has been waiting so long for this first teaser trailer and I'm not gonna lie, I was sort of in disbelief when it dropped. There's a lot to cover so I'm going to break it down into sections, and the last section being what my hopes are going into this movie.

The Turtles

I know that people have talked about the designs of the turtles themselves since they were leaked a while back, but I adore how these turtles look. This is something I'll mention throughout this post, but it's very clear that Seth Rogen has taken a lot of inspiration from the original 80's cartoon when designing these characters. What's nice about it is that he's given their desings their own little twist that makes them unique and fresh i.e. Mikey's braces.

I absolutely adore the voices they chose for these turtles because they are actual teenagers. Nicolas Cantu as Leo, Brady Noon as Raph, Micah Abbey as Donnie, and Shamon Brown JR as Mikey. I don't know of any instances where the turtles have been voiced by actual teenagers because as far as I'm aware they've all been voiced/played by adults. This also just feels like another breath of fresh air for the series.

What they've shown of the turtles so far seems pretty promising.

Teenagers Acting Like Teenagers

One of the first things they show in the teaser trailer is the turtles goofing off the way teenagers do, and this absolutely made my heart soar. I feel like in other versions of the turtles we always see them so caught up in conflict that we never really get to see them hang out, goof around, and get to act their age. Rise was one version that I think showed this the most so I'm really glad to see more of it in this movie.

This Movie Looks Stunning

I'm sure other people have made this comparison but this movie really does give off the same vibes as Into the Spiderverse. It wouldn't surprise me if Seth Rogen and the people who have been working on Mutant Mayhem took inspiration from that movie. The imagery in the movie is absolutely gorgeous, and I love that it has this "hand-drawn" style. Like Into the Spiderverse, I have a feeling they wanted to achieve this look as sort of a call back or an homage to how the turtles got their start: As a comic book.

I personally really like that the colors aren't super overwhelming. In some shots from the teaser trailer there are nice bright pops of color that really stand out and liven it up. I'm not an expert, but I think it's a really nice design choice.

I don't think it comes as too big of a surprise that a lot of the other characters featured in this movie are going to be voiced by well known actors, but I'm honestly really pleased with this lineup. And based on this lineup I think we're going to see some really interesting takes on some of these characters like Leatherhead and Wingnut.

As a sidenote, I am so excitied to see Leatherhead in this movie. In general Leatherhead is just one of my favorite secondary characters.

The designs, like I said before, have taken a lot of inspiration from the 80's cartoon. Splinter's, what I can assume is a kimono (though I might be wrong), has the same pattern as Splinter's kimono from the 80's cartoon. April of course has her signature yellow jacket and I love that he outfit looks so casual but it's perfect for running around trying to get the best scoop. Bebop and Rocksteady's clothes are pretty much right from the 80's cartoon and I absolutely love it, and personally I think that Bebop and Rocksteady look great in this art style (honestly this applies to all of the characters).

I have a feeling, and at the same time I'm hoping, that the first official trailer or the next teaser trailer (whichever one comes first) shows off some more of these designs or even shows the designs of some of the other mutants that are going to be featured.

Hopes for Mutant Mayhem

I know that this is only the first trailer of many between now and when the movie releases, but I genuinely have high hopes for this movie. This is going to be the first TMNT movie getting a theatrical release (clairfying with theatrical because the Rise of the TMNT movie was a Netlfix original) in 7 years since Out of the Shadows released back in 2016.

Even with this trailer being just under two minutes I think that they are taking these characters in the right direction and I'm genuinely excited to see their personalities shine. When Seth Rogen posted descriptions of the turtles on his (I believe) Instagram I knew that they were going to do these characters justice.

When Mutant Mayhem is released in August and I go to the theater to see it, I wanna walk out and say “That was amazing, I want to see it again”. From the developments over the months and with the release of this official teaser trailer I hope that I can say with confidence that not only did I like it, but also that it was a Ninja Turtles movie made by Ninja Turtles fans, for Ninja Turtles fans.

Okay, so I'm very new to this blog and don't know your story about Ant-Man. AKA, how did you "find him" (ex: by following MCU movies or randomly hearing the movie from somewhere else)? What made you like him so much? Why is he important to you? Do you relate in many ways? Tell me everything. (That sounds so pushy lmao but I really am curious!)

😂 You’re fine, Anon. You’re fine I promise. First of all, welcome to my mess of a blog! Glad you’re here. I think you’re actually the first person in a long time if not ever to ask me these questions, but I’m very happy to share.

So I’ve been a big fan of Marvel ever since the first Iron Man came out. Once I watched that one, well I was hooked. Little did I know just how vast the MCU would become and how deeply involved I would be over time.

But honestly, Ant-Man slipped under my radar until I went to watch Civil War in theaters. Scott Lang made his debut into my life, and I was like *points at screen* “That’s Paul Rudd since when was he in the MCU?” I mean, I’m a fan of his, but not enough to follow everything he’s in. I watched the fight scene and watched what Scott could do. And I was intrigued.

But what really got me if I’m being honest was this.

Like this is legit how I would react too. I’d be nervous and excited and I’d get my words mixed up which happens often and I’d just be so star struck and like “Wow this is awesome!” That was so relatable that I was like “I wanna know who this guy is.”

As soon as I got home, I rented Ant-Man on my laptop, and it was hook line and sinker. I didn’t have a chance.

Scott is more like the Everyman. He’s just a regular guy trying to do what’s right, and he makes mistakes and tries to fix them and this whole superhero gig just kinda fell into his lap. He’s intelligent and kind and funny and loyal and protective over his family, especially his daughter. He doesn’t take himself seriously, but he’s such a good asset to any group and often overlooked. Much like how I overlooked him until Civil War. But I’ve looked for him ever since.

And honestly, I just see a lot of me in him. I’ve had Marvel fans I’m friends with confirm it lol. We played a game once of who are you in the MCU where the closest match in personality wins. I said I was Scott Lang, and I won the game. I have other favorites, sure, but, you know, no one else just resonates with me more. In this fandom or in any other I’m in. It’s hard to explain, but I’ve never fit more with a character before, and it’s really nice for me to have Scott.

So there’s the story. I don’t know if that’s what you were looking for or hoping for, but yeah, there it is. In my head, Scott and I are like 🤞🏻 and thick as thieves, I mean burglars lol.

i got my diploma today! it's fancy and so pretty and i'm so happy with it. it's kind of real, now. far more than before. it's crazy, yknow? i have another piece of paper with my name on it, but this one is (a) bigger, (b) more expensive, and (c) so much fancier than the others i have. i also ordered a frame for it, which i'm gonna be so excited to have in all its glory, all assembled and too big to put anywhere in my house 😂 but it's really pretty and i'm really proud of it. so much has gone into earning this degree, and it's wild that it's done. i still feel like i'm catching up with living.

also i bought more things today. probably shouldn't have. but i wanted outfits for renaissance faires so i got two. whatever. i got them on sale, so it wasn't so bad.

mostly radio silence from joel today, which makes sense since he's away at a con this weekend. i miss him :c

tomorrow i'm going to the movies, which is exciting. we're going to see quantumania, which i'm pretty hype for, since paul rudd as antman has gotta be my favorite character in the mcu at this point. like geez, scott lang is easily the most well-adjusted and normal person in the entire universe. everyone else is kinda batshit or a genius or something, but this one guy is totally normal. he's good at figuring things out. he's just a weirdo, a goofball, a good dad, and a decent guy. in this house we love and appreciate scott lang.

i went out with my mom to get stuff for my sister early in the day, and we brought it over to her. she's been feeling sick lately, so we brought her comfort food and snacks so she can exist peacefully as she mourns the completion of her five-year d&d campaign that finished today.

and for dinner my parents and i went to longhorn as a celebration for my finishing my degree, which i believe is the second time we've done exactly that, but this time i have my diploma 😂 it was good, but my salmon was kinda too juicy and a little undercooked, so i'm gonna slap it in a pan and fry the living daylights out of it instead of forever making the microwave smell of fish.

i read some more just now before putting it down and writing this.

also my shoulder has been a little achey and stiff. it's hard to do the exercises the doctor gave me for post-op when my bahongazongahagas are in the mcfucking way all the goddamn time. in the meantime, my hand has been achey too so the pain radiates into my elbow from both sides. i hope it stops soon.

anyway, im tired. i'm bored. i need desperately to go back to work. and i need to scratch my legs properly, because that shit itches.

ranking all movies in the halloween franchise

despite being a jamie lee curtis fan, i've never managed to watch any of the halloween movies so i thought i'd rectify that this spooky season. ratings taken from the letterboxd system just bc it's easier, and general disclaimer that these are just my own personal opinions, posted here just for posterity, y'all will like what u like and i will do the same.

HALLOWEEN I (1978) 2.5/5 STARS

look, i understand why it's a cult classic but it was a bit too slow for me and very painfully 70s. michael wasn't terrifying so much as he was a creepy stalker. really only liked laurie and dr. loomis out of all the characters.

HALLOWEEN II (1981) 3.5/5 STARS

this, i liked much better than H1, which i know is sacrilegious but it was def. more my speed in term of slashers. i didn't like the family connection that this movie forced on us, but it is what it is.

HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH (1982) 1/5 STARS

i get what they were trying to do, and i respect the vision of trying to make a horror anthology around the halloween holiday but...this was such a bad movie. it didn't make sense most of the time; i'm still salty about the ending; i didn't like any of the characters and for some reason they had to include ROBOTS. like WHYYYY and it wasn't terminator robots, the coolest of the robots in media, it was robots made of papier-mâché who folded as soon as u looked at them wrong. overall, such a hot mess of garbage. (but i love the title, i guess?? and the Irish villain brought a certain gravitas to this movie that was both jarring and fun.)

HALLOWEEN IV: RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS (1988) 4.5/5 STARS

genuinely the first entry in this franchise to scare me (maybe because the protagonist was a young child??) i did like that we got dr. loomis back tho. loved rachel's character and her and jamie's interactions. but this was so trauma-filled and again more horrifying for me than all three of the previous movies. very exciting slasher.

HALLOWEEN V: THE REVENGE OF MICHAEL MYERS (1989) 2.5/5 STARS

another garbage entry mostly for how horribly they treat poor jamie for the vast majority of this film, assassinated dr. loomis' character, and then killed off rachel, only to replace her with her friend, tina. i also hated the whole cult plot line, which starts here, and is as dumb as making michael and laurie brother and sister. and the vast majority of these characters are so dumb, and i'm so dumbfounded that they've lasted as long as they have in a horror film. this movie asks u to suspend your disbelief to the breaking point.

HALLOWEEN VI: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS (1995) 1.5/5 STARS

this movie, i swear i thought i couldn't hate a movie as much as i hated H3 and H5, but then this movie came along and PROVED ME WRONG. like, noooope, we're here to make an even worse movie!! i gave this one a whole 1.5 rating simply for paul rudd (yes, that paul rudd, he was the only thing keeping me sane while watching this shit show.) WHY DID JAMIE HAVE TO BE PREGNANT???!! WHY DID THE CULT HAVE TO HAVE HER AND HER CHILD???!! HAS THIS CHILD NOT SUFFERED ENOUGH??? the cult of thorn plot line is meh, whatever for me, i can take it or leave it, but i'm just so mad at jamie's death and subsequent trauma from everything she had to go through. every single character annoyed me (except for paul rudd and donald pleasence, who prove that good actors can polish a turd only so far...)

everyone was dumb, the whole town of haddonfield was dumb, and i was dumb for watching this...

(i know there's a producers' cut too, but i cannot find it and at this point i don't even care to bc i just want to burn watching this movie from my memory...)

HALLOWEEN VII: H20 TWENTY YEARS LATER (1998) 4.5/5 STARS

(i know they don't title this as H7, but i do just bc i want to and it is technically the seventh film so i'm gonna do what i want)

i appreciate the blank slate this movie starts out with (no cult of thorn, no jamie lloyd, but no dr. loomis either unfortunately).

is this a masterpiece?? no, but i had fun, and it made me terrified during certain scenes so i thought the tension was great. and the laurie/michael standoff at the end was superb. i do think this movie has some deep things to say about trauma, so i liked that too. no one annoyed me too greatly, and i am def. mad they didn't end this whole franchise with this movie since i think it was a pretty satisfying ending overall.

HALLOWEEN VIII: RESURRECTION (2002) 0.5/5 stars

JUST WHYYYYY. another garbage movie. this movie irked me so much. it tried to say some deep stuff about fiction and reality, but the writing was so bad, i couldn't take it seriously. not one of the characters were worth rooting for; they were vapid and shallow (even our final girl ends up being saved at the last minute by the greedy capitalist who put her in this situation in the first place). laurie's death was so dumb, there was no connection to H20 (i know i would've still hated this movie even if they did connect the two films beyond just recapping that laurie killed the wrong guy in H20 and that she was headmistress of a private academy).

HALLOWEEN IX (2007) AKA ROB ZOMBIE'S HALLOWEEN 0.5/5 STARS

is this the worst movie in the franchise?? not by a long shot. is it also the worst remake in the history of remakes? no, but it should be in the top twenty at least. this remake was very much not for me. rob zombie is beloved, and i can understand if this becomes a cult classic (if it hasn't already just because of the originality), but it was just very meh to me.

humanizing michael ain't it either. (i will say the mask in this was way more terrifying than any of the previous ones so points for that.)

i tried going in with an open mind, i really did, but i hated malcolm mcdowell's dr. loomis. i am and shall forever be a donald pleasence fangirl. dr. loomis is supposed to be michael's foil, and a character that you can root for. but mcdowell's loomis went far past the rooting for & liking stage, and well into narcissistic ahole stage.

it's def. the anti-Carpenter Halloween in terms of pacing, profanity, violence, and brutality, and, again some might like that, but i found it's definitely not for me. and am firmly in the camp that this movie is waaaayyy too over-the-top in terms of everything.

HALLOWEEN X (2009 AKA ROB ZOMBIE'S HALLOWEEN II) 1.5/5 STARS

i will admit i like this one far better than the '07 version just bc of the way the whole film handles trauma, PTSD, healing, and all those aspects, but rob zombie and i still do not vibe. and that's okay.

i...i do not know what they did with dr. loomis character, and am baffled he suddenly did a 180 and became a narcissistic asshole for no reason at all (well, there were traces of it in H1 where malcolm mcdowell played him as this hipster wanna-be doctor who wanted to be michael's friend more than he wanted to be his doctor). it honestly felt like Hollywood's interpretation of what a psychiatrist was, if they had never met a psychiatrist in their life and just based it on businesspeople they had *actually* met in Hollywood and were like "well, close enough."

my biggest gripe with this movie is that it felt like it was all over the place; michael wasn't really michael so much as he was a mentally ill dude who knew how to eviscerate people in an efficient manner. it was jut really bleak, traumatic, brutal, and gory. laurie survived, but mostly physically, not really emotionally. she wasn't really laurie any more, so it's debatable to what extent she "survived".

HALLOWEEN XI (2018) 5/5 STARS

I FUCKING LOVED THIS i just did. i'm not sorry. this??? so fucking fantastic.

i still maintain jamie lee curtis is the best thing about these movies (and...i guess michael myers too. but, again, i'm a scaredy-cat, so the less thought about that asshole the better.) and i love when they have her be a powerful badass. i am firmly Team Laurie and always will be (and now Team Karen/Allyson/Laurie too).

(the kills here were also brutal and gory, and gahhh, i am not a fan of gore, but the story kept me interested and on the edge of my seat.)

HALLOWEEN KILLS (AKA HALLOWEEN XII) (2021) 3/5 STARS

...meh. i didn't love this, but i didn't hate it either. it's just very underwhelming after the brilliance that was the 2018 remake.

is this technically a good film?? yeah, it was filmed fine, nothing too spectacular tho. but the writing is a mess, felt like the writers couldn't write themselves out of the awesome ending they produced in 2018. but really. they should've ended this whole franchise with the 2018 remake, so that way at least the franchise would've ended with a bang (i know i have halloween ends to watch too, but am not hopeful about that entry either...)

the nicest thing i can say about this sequel is it's not a stinkin' pile of garbage as some other movies in this franchise. too silly and cringe in certain parts, and the pacing was off (certain characters whom i thought would've been killed off as soon as we saw them on-screen weren't killed off until scenes later, which i thought didn't work for a slasher film like Halloween).

we also focus way too much on supporting characters that were introduced just last film, and while i like what others are calling the "fan-service-y" parts, like all the callbacks to previous Halloween films, and having a focus on tommy, marion, and lindsey, the film was trying to do too much by focusing both on legacy characters AND the new characters. also, imho, laurie is sidelined for most of the action, and while that meant that the other two strode women were being badass by themselves, i think the halloween movies work much better when it's just laurie vs. michael, instead of haddonfield vs. michael bc most of the characters of haddonfield and haddonfield itself aren't developed as much as laurie, so we don't care as much, or at least i don't bc i know michael is going to murder them eventually, if not right away, but with laurie, there's some hope that she will emerge victorious.

HALLOWEEN ENDS (AKA HALLOWEEN XIII) (2022) 2.5/5 STARS

i'll be honest: i don't actually hate the whole corey storyline. i went into this not expecting much because i knew nothing could surpass the 2018 remake for me, and i think that mindset helped a lot. was the corey character and storyline stupid?? sure, but not as dumb as the Cult of Thorn storyline they tried to foist on us. anyway, at the end of the day i'm just here to stan laurie strode, and be her hype girl.

again, just...meh for me. there was so much melodrama in this movie when this should've just been a fun slasher movie, but i guess the film felt it had to explore how much trauma all these characters had and never actually properly dealt with it (seriously, all these characters were so mean and bitter to each other, and i get it when u had a crazed psychopath stalking a town for years, no one will feel all that warm and fuzzy to begin with).

also, still very salty about karen's death from the last film. #justiceforkaren

So, to the anon who asked me what men I find attractive a few weeks ago, I completely forgot about this dude cuz I hadn’t seen him in forever.

His name is Sean Teale and he's too young for me to get excited about but in my opinion, that is a beautiful man to look at.

Now, when I imagine kissing or boning him I may as well be imagining I'm knitting for what I feel. So, like I tried to explain before, there are men that I know are beautiful to look at but they don't actually excite me. Anyway, I think this guy is very nice to look at.

Oh! Jonathan Bailey is adorable! He's top tier cute.

I also think Sam Heughen is alright to look as Jamie in Outlander. And I thought of some others and forgot them again already.

Oh, the guy who plays Uhtred, Alexander Dreymon, in The Last Kingdom is one. Travis Femmel but really only as Ragnar in Vikings. Outside of that he's not much to write home about.

I've always thought Paul Rudd was cute. Alexander Skarsgård. David Tennet kinda...his nose is distracting because it's so crooked.

But again, I feel no sexual attraction to any of these men. I just think they're nice to look at.

2023 August Goals - Films & Shows

At the start of every month, I usually make a list of things I want to do -- e.g. list of shows/films I want to watch, list of books I want to read, list of fandom related things I want to do, etc. It's a way to keep me accountable, and given how scattered my brain is sometimes, a way of remembering things I want to get to. I hardly ever cross off everything on my lists, but I do like to see my progress.

Here are a few films & shows I'm excited for this month.

This entire film is based off of one chapter in Dracula. We all knows what happened, but to see it on screen? I am intrigued. *Side note, I can't be the only one who saw Dementors in the title, right?

This summer has been great with Asian lead films - Past Lives (I sobbed) and Joy Ride (I LOLed). Shortcomings is Randall Park's directorial debut. And Sherry Cola! She is having a moment between this and Joy Ride. I can't wait to see what she does next.

📺 Only Murders in the Building - Season 3

This is SUCH a gem of a show and I need more people to watch this and scream with me. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez has such great chemistry with each other. And this season! It has Paul Rudd & Meryl Streep! Just sign me up, please!

📺 Painkiller (Limited Series)

This one I'm effy on. Dopesick came out in 2021 and it was SUCH a great show. Everyone was great in it and the way the show structured its story and played with time --- it showed all sides of the crisis. Michael Stuhlbarg was pitched perfect as Richard Sackler. Michael Keaton was great as Dr. Finnix. Kaitlyn Dever showed great humanity with Betsy. It was based on Beth Macy's book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America (a great read) and the producers did a great service in hiring her as a consultant. Painkiller -- hmmm. Idk what to make of it yet. It just seems too Hollywood for Hollywood's sake? Based on the trailer? I guess we'll see.

My first favorite song from evermore was gold rush! I love how it portrays jealousy and admiration simultaneously, so me. Now my favorite is Ivy. And also tis the damn season because it’s december!! I loveee the evermore cover! Yes I do think it fits the work well. It’s simple and it gives off fall vibes. Evermore is a winter album though, but I like the cover anyway.

I’m very excited and hopeful about the experience to come, but also trying hard to remember that it definitely won’t be able to be all good times so that I don’t end up fantasizing a utopian version before I go (cuz I used to do that way more than I’d like, stupid imagination).

MATT IS JUST- he's so fun & cocky & confident in himself. honestly if i was him, a walk of shame would NOT even be a walk of shame b/c i'd NEVER be ashamed of myself if i was THE matt murdock. he & druig are so AUGHHH it hurts. btw, have you seen the ms. marvel show? b/c i need someone to acknowledge the amazingness that is red dagger! he's so loveableeeee

i also like the darker mcu storylines just b/c i feel like w/ everything going on, some angst ought to happen!! the mcu definitely nails the happier, humorous stories but i'm currently LOVING the serious storylines. multiverse of madness felt more like a horror movie i was actually JUMPING in my seat, almost screamed at some parts, & almost had a heart attack ASLFKJF it was definitely an experience, but i'm not sure i'm ready to rewatch it b/c i'll have to prep myself before the watch LOL

u have a favorite movie/show in the franchise?? it's honestly hard, but i love the guardians of the galaxy movies, shang chi is a masterpiece, wandavision's a classic, and ms. marvel was something my family & i liked a lot!!

& i should really get into the dc animated shows b/c the scenes i've & the way they draw the characters... they look absolutely immaculate 😩 why do i i always go for the 2d, fictional, or generally unobtainable men WHYYYY?!?!?!
