He stares, unseeing, at the dank ceiling of his little cell. The grey robes the guards gave him hang limply from his frame, his hair is lank and knotted, and his bare feet scrape against the cold, rough floor. The waves crash against the wall behind him, violent and unforgiving.

His hands are shaking.

It should never have been a thing to be questioned, his loyalty to James. And yet.

The cold seeps into his skin, sinks deeper, all the way to the bone marrow. It is an unnatural chill, just as the world is unnatural. Illogical.

He stares unseeing, as water drips slowly from a small outcrop of stone on the ceiling. The drops plink on the floor beneath, and each tiny sound rings in the back of his head like a knell, echoes off the walls with a finality that reminds Sirius of death.

His hands can't stop shaking.

James Potter is dead.

James Potter died with sharp words on his tongue and fierce love in his heart, died in his own home with a photo of Lily, Harry and Sirius in his pocket. James, loud and bright and sunny James, died as he lived— brave and full of love to the very end.

Sirius Black died with him.
