Kataang shippers getting mad that Zutara shippers wish their ship was canon as if they don't always brag about how Kataang is canon and have been harassing the NATLA writers because they think they won't make Kataang canon.

So, a Kataang fan made a post about a week ago "asking" (rhetorically, of course) why it's a bad thing Katara acts like Aang's mom. And I just-
First of all, isn't that something that Kataang shippers have been trying to actively dispute for almost two decades at this point? That Katara doesn't treat Aang as a younger brother/son? There's literally an entire post about it from The Headband that's made its rounds on almost every single social media platform.
Tumblr media
So which is it, besties? Does Katara act motherly towards Aang or not?
(The answer is yes of course, as The Runaway outright confirms it multiple times. The whole premise of that episode is that Katata acts as a mother to Toph, Sokka, and Aang)
Now, why is it a problem? The fact that I have to explain this is telling for how little a lot of Kataang shippers understand Katara.
Katara was parentified. She took care of Sokka (by his own admission) as well as her entire village after Hakoda left. Even before then really, as she says in the very first episode that she's been doing all the chores around the village since their mother died which was years before that. She was delivering literal babies while basically being a baby herself.
Traveling- and being- with Aang is supposed to represent her freedom and childhood, right? That's what the first episode shows us and what Kataang is built on. But if anything, it has the opposite effect.
Book 1 wasn't terrible. Katara was very free-spirited and joyful in addition to being caring and empathetic. Her and Aang could still goof off together, even if she was doing her best to support him emotionally. You could easily see that as her being a good friend.
But somewhere between Books 2 and 3, that changed. Katara went from being his supportive friend to being his emotional crutch. During The Desert, she bears the brunt of him lashing out (he does yell at Toph once, but he's the most volatile with Katara). He also gets frustrated with her during Sozin's Comet, even though Zuko and Sokka were the ones pushing him. It's always Katara who has to bring him back when he loses control of the Avatar State, risking her own safety.
(This isn't emotional, but it was Katara who healed Aang after Azula's attack. She was the one who stayed by his side, staying awake for hours to make sure he would be okay. I like to look at it as a physical representation of their relationship. Aang's wellbeing is always put on her shoulders. If she isn't there to lift him up, he'll fall. And if he falls, the world falls. No 14 year old should be responsible for that. But it's so easy for the show- and y'all- to shove it onto her because this part of her character is never addressed. It's just used as a testament to her caring nature)
Even without Katara's parentification, this causes a major imbalance in their relationship. It puts Katara in charge of managing Aang's pain and being emotionally unsupported in return. The Southern Raiders is proof that Katara can't depend on Aang emotionally the way he does her. She's been his shoulder to cry on through everything and the one time the tables turned, she couldn't even get that from him.
And the saddest thing about this? Katara says to him, "I knew you wouldn't understand." She never expected Aang to support her. She's become so accustomed to being there for others that she's never once expected anyone to do the same for her, least of all Aang.
(But Zuko does. He's the only one who recognized Katara's pain- admittedly, mostly because it was directed at him- and tried to help her. Without being prompted. I gotta give this one to the Zutara folks)
In what world is this dynamic healthy for a romantic relationship?

Yeah,no,Zutaras don't care about representation for anyone other than themselves.Because if they did,why do they
Call Aang white because they don't like him while knowing full well he's tibetan and come up with every insult in the book for him because he's a femme boy
Say Mai is a pick me and toxic because of her autistic-coding and trauma responses and dosen't 'deserve' Zuko even though he canonically finds the former attractive and has the latter too
Accuse Zukka shippers of being fujoshis who 'just hate women' for wanting Sokka to be bi and Zuko his boyfriend when most Zukka shippers are queer minors who only started the fandom because Atla got put on Netflix so that's how they found out it then instead of when it came out
And completely disregard Ty Lee as an even potentional love interest for Zuko by calling her 'too much of a bimbo' and 'stereotypically girly' for him when she was written with deconstructing that archetype in mind by giving her real emotions and what it puts girls through by misogynists who want to police how we present even if it's a healing/coping mechanism like in her case?
If moc queer or not love Kataang, they get called dudebros with no basis. If autistic women instead of just 'quirky nerds' love Maiko, they get strawmaned as 'creepy alt girls who're trying too hard'.If gay and trans people love Zukka, they get the classic 'these FILTHY GAYS are RUINING our HETEROSEXUAL SPACE' take. And if autistic queer girls who're femme in ways that aren't palpable to allistics and cishets love Ty Luko,we get told we aren't even worth considering romantic options because we're too 'stupid' and can't 'really have deep connections' that aren't being someone's annoying friend. You wanted Zutara to be canon because you're a woc like Katara and had a crush on Zuko?Cool,i feel the same way about Ty Luko and so do certain Maiko and Zukka shippers with their ships but none of run around cyberbullying school children and causing unnecessary infighting over it!So be quiet, not everything is about you and at this point we've proven we're too good to be near you so leave and don't forget to let door hit you on the way out♡

I think my biggest problem with the vast majority of zutara shippers is that they don't just ship zutara, they actively hate on Aang. As a kataang shipper, I LOVE Zuko!!! He is a phenomenal amazing character, best redemption arc of all time, I adore him!!! (also I love Maiko!!!! & Zukka!!! & Zukki!!!!) But I don't think I've ever come across a single zutara shipper that doesn't actively hate on Aang as a character as much as possible. If all they did was ship katara & Zuko, whatever, no problem, not my ship but you're free to do what you want. But they can't just leave it at that. They never can. & that is my problem with (most) zutarans.

So since the fandom has come back to life and there is not enough Kataang content on this app I will start sharing my two cents. Yay.
I want to start off by saying that as the show was airing, I, as a 10 year old, did kinda ship Zutara. Let’s face it, that scene in the catacombs was a turning point for a lot of shippers. But that was before I saw the final season a couple of years later. When I rewatched the show as a whole, as a teenager I was over Zutara, honestly their interaction kind of felt awkward to me, because they were enemies for so long. So I was all for Kataang. Now, that I’ve rewatched it for like a 1000th time, as a 28 year old, I finally see Kataang for the amazing pairing that it is.
Anyway, I’m not here to hate on anyone, you can ship whoever you like, and I love Zuko so you will not see me slandering his character here. Plus I don't feel the need to hate dump on a character to make my ship feel superior (*cough* unlike some Zutara shippers *cough*).
Ok, so. I feel that when people think of Katara, and her part in the show, they remember her as the responsible one in the group, the "mother" of the group, the sensible and caring one. Yes, when Katara’s mother died she had to step in and take the responsibility of the mother in the family, like Sokka says in the Runaway, and that stayed with her throughout the show. But, I hate that that’s the only thing she’s remembered for, because that’s just the result of her trauma. I feel like most people ignore a very crucial part of her character. Yes, she is the responsible in the group, but when she gets a chance to just be a kid, that's what she is.
People forget about the fun loving side of Katara. The one that goes penguin sledding and remembers how she hasn’t done it in a long time because life hasn’t allowed her to. The side of Katara that gets obsessed with Aunt Wu’s prediction because she is just a regular girl who’s fascinated by her love life, and dreams about what her future husband might be like. The girl that tries flying on the glider with Teo. The girl that relaxes on Appa and lets the hippie girl braid her hair, completely forgetting about the next task in their journey. People forget the side of her that dances in a cave, forgetting about the war and just enjoying life. Let’s not ignore that whenever Katara has a chance, she just enjoys being a kid, not just a badasss waterbender travelling with the Avatar.
And when Katara brings that side out, you know who’s right by her side? Aang. He’s not just by her side, he’s the one initiating those little fun moments. Penguin sledding is his idea, he’s the one to remind her that even though she’s been through a lot, and has a lot of responsibilities, she’s still a kid. He’s the one to organize the dance party, in a middle of a war, in the enemy's terrorory, he still finds a way for them just to be kids. And she’s right there with him, dancing. He’s also taking part in her obsession with Aunt Wu, not belittling or making fun of her faith, but taking part in it. Also sitting right next to her in a flower crown and enjoying the music the hippies play.
You cannot ignore that part of Katara, the part that shines when she’s comfortable, the part that just wants to be a regular kid and have fun. And that’s the part that Aang brings out in her. He’s the Avatar, the weight of the world is literally on his shoulders, but he still finds a way to enjoy life and be a kid, even after going through the worst trauma you can imagine. And he’s there to remind her that even if you’ve experienced the worst, you can still find joy in the little things. She literally says in the first episode - Aang brought something we haven’t had in a long time - fun. And that’s what he brings to her, this light, and that’s why she’s so drawn to him.
Isn’t that what we want for Katara, after the war is over? To just let herself be a kid, not to miss out on that part of her life, now that she doesn’t have to worry about their survival? And the best person to bring this joy and childlike wonder back into her life is Aang. And that’s why I think that Aang is truly the best one Katara could have ended up with.

It is baffling to me how Kataang shippers interpret that couple. How can you be a fan of Katara in specific and see how little agency she got in that relationship yet still be satisfied with how that whole mess turned out. Katara never gets to express her feelings.
Let that sink in. Katara, who challenged a waterbending master with decades of experience on her, who started a prison riot and freed captive earthbenders, who went out of her way to help a village of Fire Nation citizens. Who made a flower hat for a really cute guy she was into. THAT girl didn't get to express her own feelings for Aang. After their last two disastrous encounters- one in which he violated her consent after she tried to let him down easy said she was confused. After he had opened a lava fissure in her face because she didn't want to talk about his feelings for her. She didn't even get to speak. Her final line between the Agni Kai and that final scene was about Sokka's drawing.
She doesn't get to talk to Aang about how his treatment of her upset her. She doesn't get to express what changed between EIP and the finale. She doesn't get to confront Aang on his habit of running away when things get tough. She doesn't even get to hear what Aang likes about her (I mean, we the audience know that he thinks she's pretty, but beyond that?). The way the finale sets up Kataang it makes it seem like Katara is only into Aang now because he's Th3 r3@L H3r0!!!! (lies, but that's another rant). It makes her look either like she feels obligated or she's incredibly shallow (which, we know she isn't). But somehow this feels like a satisfying culminating moment for Kataang shippers???
And let me be clear, I don't care. I don't care if you are reading this now and you like both Kataang and Aang. I don't care if you truly do think their story is the height of romance. I am not here to debate you on the story merits of Kataang vs Zutara or change your mind on anything. You can like or hate whatever you want in good health as far as I'm concerned. Just know that if you try to argue with me, this is my opinion; Aang is fetid trash. Kataang is somehow both the most boring and the most toxic relationship in the show (yeah, I'm including Maiko). All trying to argue with me will accomplish is to stir up more examples in my mind about why Kataang is a terrible ship and Aang is an awful character/friend/SO/father, so jump into my inbox if you want that. But wouldn't you rather go talk to your fellow shipper fans about it?

Okay, so I have seen some discourse about being a Zutara shipper and their feelings about Aang and Mai. And I'm not here to be a moral police officer. However, I want to provide a perspective that maybe other people have but cannot vocalize. I love Aang, when NATLA Aang asked Sokka where Appa was I think I was about to cry because it was cute. I could never hate Aang. You could never make me hate Aang. If you notice in past posts I do not flame(o) Aang. I DO CRITICIZE HIM. However, what the writers did to Aang is not cool. Using the device of an unconsented kiss is disgusting and sad. My argument is that Kataang could have been written so well but I don't ship them so I don't care to think about that aspect. If you do want some nuance in my perspective of that ship. However, it is my idea that we shouldn't write romances for 12-year-olds. They're just simply too young for that. However, I criticize Aang when it comes to time to do so. For example, the unconsented kiss with Katara and that problematic Charkra arc. Though my criticism is never hateful but filled with frustration with the writers.
This is how I view Aang.... I see him as the Avatar being the equivalent of a child prodigy, whether that be in music or sports. However, a child prodigy still needs their parents regardless of how skillful they are. And that's how I see Aang. No matter how wise or good he is at bending or being the avatar in general. He needs adults in his life to be his support system and be able to raise him.
I like Aang but for me, he is not above criticism and he is not a perfect character there are a lot of things that need to be addressed in terms of this specific character because I feel that there is not enough criticism for him and I feel that I'm not upset with the character himself. I'm upset with the writer's thought it was cool to do certain things. And I'm allowed to respectfully criticize some of his ideologies seeing that some of them came at the expense of demeaning a religion.
As for Mai, I think she's a treat to watch by herself, but with Zuko it's just draining and sad. They both harm each other and that's just depressing. But honestly, I have not looked too deeply into her character to speak about her.
My conclusion is you can still ship Zutara while liking Aang and Mai but it is also fair be critical of their characters.

I am not one to mind ships, but shippers are what drive me crazy.
I hate how so many z*tara shippers seem to strip Katara of her character when it benefits their narrative.
Basically calling Katara a human incubator because she had kids, saying she felt pressured to do such because of Aang is unbelievably insane.
But thinking her being with Zuko suddenly makes having kids and being with someone in a position of power is okay makes me side eye you so hard.
I don't get how someone who was actively trying to harm her throughout the entire show is given grace but when it comes to Katara's feelings towards Aang "they came out of nowhere, and makes no sense"
I don't like how people act like Aang doesn't respect Katara and how they imply that simply because he is the Avatar that Aang sees her as lesser than when that has never been the case.
Aang and Katara have always been very supportive of each other, and admitting that does not take away from you enjoying your ship.
It seems as if every positive that comes with Kataang gets turned into a negative for them but is suddenly good when applied elsewhere.
When it comes to how they end, you think Katara was simply a trophy for Aang doing well, but you also think because of his redemption, Zuko should've ended up with Katara. That's hypocritical to me.

you know what i noticed about kataang shippers is that, they have made multiple blogs (even titled in the url) fully dedicated to bashing zutara. like whole blogs full of nothing but hating zutara and everyone who ships it.
i don't see the reverse. yes, there are zutara blogs with lots of aang/kataang critical posts. but these blogs also have content that's focused on zutara (posting about the ship you actually do like! imagine that!) and most are content creators as well. i can't think of any blogs that are purely anti-kataang or even mostly anti-kataang.
idk to me it just seems like zutara shippers are better about staying in our lane and enjoying what we like instead of devoting *that* much energy to hating ✌️
Oh definitely, I think in the past few years I’ve seen two blogs called something along the lines of “Zutara isn’t canon” and post nothing but angry anons whining about people shipping Zutara. And of course, the “fandom police” guy who is very obviously a right winger poorly applying social justice concepts in an attempt to win ship discourse, and who thinks anything non-canon is stupid.
It’s funny because how do you miss the point of fandom this badly? It’s transformative. There are only so many ways to tell the exact same story. There is a reason why it’s very common for non-canon ships to be more popular among fans than canon. It taps into the creative aspect that so many of us enjoy.
And for Zutara specifically, I’m actually glad it isn’t canon. I like that it’s open-ended and that I’m free to write it however I want, because to be completely honest, I think the creators would have completely botched it if it was canon. I mean, I actually like Maiko quite a bit too but I don’t like how rushed their ending felt. I don’t like how it felt like Mai reappeared to be Zuko’s prize. And given the straight up creepy things I’ve heard the creators say about Zutara over the years, I have no doubt they would have made me hate it via poor writing.
Plus you’re right, at the end of the day, fandom is about enjoying what you want to enjoy. Making entire blogs dedicated to telling people they’re stupid because they don’t adhere to canon as if it’s a religious doctrine doesn’t seem like you’re enjoying yourself too much. Sure, I’ve made posts critical of tropes, characters, relationships, etc. that I don’t like, but ultimately I spend my energy on what I actually do like.

Katang shippers have lost their minds. Imagine obsessing over your ship not happening in the live action series?? The guy playing Aang is a little boy and Kataang shippers want him to be all over Katara in the live action. Why are grown adults wanting to see two minors kiss and be all over each other in this live action instead of enjoying the series? I legit saw grown adults complaining about not seeing enough Kataang action? ex. Kissing.touching more. These people are creepy. I'm not even the biggest Zutara shippers but they aren't saying these creepy things. I don't even hate Kataang but it already happened in the comics and animated series so why are they complaining?

I never thought Zutara would come back to twist my heartstrings, but ever since the live-action released on Netflix I've been having the exact same feelings I had for it years ago. Including the burning anger at seeing the most maddening fights between Zutara and Kataang.
There are several amazing essays online that explain why Zutara is so good and why so many people love it (Sneezy Reviews' 2-hour-long video is superb), but I don't care to delve into that. After all, it's fictional characters from a cartoon. Shipping is not that serious. Therefore, what really drives me crazy is seeing Kataang shippers and fans in general hate Zutara so passionately and not understand why. What's the point of this shipping war when Kataang won the war years ago? It's literally the canon ship. They constantly brag about it, even. So why do they get so mad and aggressive towards Zutara fans? The ATLA subreddit has more posts complaining and mocking Zutara than posts from Zutara fans discussing the ship. Twitter can't let Zutara fans gush over small scrubs without saying we have a colonizer fetish, an absolutely insane take about a cartoon, and that POC people who enjoy Zutara are sick and must be doing crazy stuff with their white partners at home. Why are people so angry with Zutara and its fanbase? I never see posts and tweets being passionate and gushing over Kataang. Why care so much about the rival ship that lost the war to yours and call its fans the most heinous things and accuse us of all kinds of nonsense?
I'm very happy to see how many of us are still around and loving this ship just as much as we did when we were kids, don't get me wrong! But I think the ship wars in ATLA have got to be one of the most toxic online. Shipping should be fun, but people really ruin it.

I truly dont understand the amount of hate zutara shippers get, in almost every online space atla/ kataang fans get so angry at the mere existence of ppl who like zutara, its just odd like your ship is canon why are you policing what other parts of the fandom like
i honestly dont really get it either. from my own experiences, my mutuals experience, and even some irls experience, kat@angers have been the ones going into our tags and community for the explicit purpose of spreading hate. the amount of threats and shit that my mutuals and i have gotten for simply existing in our own space is crazy. there are obviously also some zutarians who go out of their way to start shit, but i feel like typically the hates comes to us.
shipping characters from a kids show is not the end of the world. im still seeing people on tiktok and shit talk about how nasty and rude we are, as if half the time we're not the ones being dragged into it. i really dont know what it is about zutara that gets people so upset but at this point its just weird. if you don't like a part of the fandom, just dont interact with it and dont post things in their tags its really not that hard

Hi Atla fandom!I keep seeing posts with a lot of notes by 'longing-for-rain' and it feel it's important to say that she's not a very good person! She
Not only lightwashes the Water Tribe characters-Look at her icon and yes,i'm not pulling your leg,it's actually Katara-but does it with ai art and commissions people for it despite drawing none of it
Is an Aang anti and actively posts hate of him-She is grown
Jokes about shipping Zuko with adults and i mean show!Zuko exclusively, where he is 16,not a young adult like in the comics and upcoming movie
Is completely dismissive and condesending towards valid Zutara critisism such as calling it 'childish' and that we're 'just mad we won't let Z/K's ship noncanon' as if i-The person she said this to-don't ship mostly Ty Luko and when most Zutara haters are Zukka shippers who realize the former is just a cisheteronormative and worse written version of the latter and giving an eye rolling response to the poc in the fandom who don't like Zuko's redemption arc because he's the son of a colonizer that actively bought into his propaganda and acted on it pre-unlearning it and this was tagged as 'Zutara/anti Kataang' despite no mention of Katara or Aang so it's very obvious why exactly this upsets her
You know the drill-Don't interact, just block, report violating material if you find it.Take care and happy april

You think it's possible to ship Zutara and still like Aang at the same time?
Lmao is this the anon from the previous ask or am I just getting lucky with asks today?
So I feel like I literally just said it today but... Of course it's possible! I didn't always hate Aang, as an example, so I should know! A lot of my hatred of him in the og ATLA is because when looking back after getting to experience what a shitty person he ends up being in the comics and LOK, his silliness starts to read much more as negligence and incompetence given that he never grows out of it. I actually think it's SO much harder to like Aang if you've consumed any of the post ATLA finale stuff, because that's literally when my hatred for him started! It's way easier to handwave and forgive his behavior in the show when you can imagine he eventually learns and grows out of it, but when you KNOW he doesn't... It makes it really difficult to find him truly sympathetic ever again in my experience
Me loving Zutara honestly has next to nothing to do with why I hate Aang, it's just that next to him, Zuko is obviously the better man AND the better partner for Katara, so for me those two tend to go together just kinda because they are both things I believe in so they end up complimenting each other lol. I actually hated Kataang and loved Zutara even before I started hating Aang, because again, that was the result of reading the comics and I was a Zutara shipper even as a kid! The don't have to go together, but for me, eventually they did.
