because like, the thh ending is just stereotypical "move forward with hope" and stuff (although i dislike it) and the v3 ending makes me feel too many things and whenever i rewatch it i need to like take a moment lol, so the sdr2 ending is like, more sad, bittersweet, idk?? than thhs ending but not as much of a mindfuck as v3s

45. again, one i wasn't really sure on at first (because fandom has sorta ruined my ability to form my own opinions independent of other people's opinions help-)

but i guess i'd say that i like Junko as a villain because you can read her as just this person who does horrible things for no reason other than entertainment, just a classic threatening force in the characters' way. But if you want a more complex villain you can also look deeper into her and figure out she's basically hated life since she was young because her talent makes her bored with everything, and pain, of others, but also her own, is the only thing that makes life worth living for her (as well as the whole thing with Ryoko and all). And that in itself is pretty tragic, but unlike some villains her tragic backstory isn't used as an excuse for her actions, and you aren't meant to sympathise with her, you're meant to go like "wow Junko that's very sad i feel a little bad, now go get crushed i hate you". So she can be both a classic "pure evil for barely any reason" villain, but she can also be one whose story makes you sad. But some people only see either one side or the other, so they complain about how they don't like villains who are evil just for the sake of it, or that they don't like how "every villain has to have a tragic reason for their actions these days". But i feel like she's kinda both at the same time.

this probably isn't really an unpopular one but i've seen more and more people say they don't like her these days, and also i rarely see people say something like this so

ღ — CELEBRATING CHIAKI AND CHIHIRO’S BIRTHDAY

summary. it’s chiaki and chihiro’s birthday! so you both decide to celebrate together.

pairing. chiaki nanami x (gender neutral) reader ; chihiro fujisaki x (gender neutral) reader. i use they/them for chihiro.

genre. comfort (sort of). lots of fluff!

a/n. when I realized what day it was, I was so happy! two of my highest kins having the same birthday! anyways, i went to the movies today so I was in a rush to make this (because they deserve all the love and affection!!) if there are any grammar errors, please forgive me! I got carried away with Chihiro’s, if you can’t tell heh… I’ll try and fix any mistakes later, but for now, please enjoy!

ღ — CHIAKI NANAMI

Chiaki was always alone on her birthday. Eating cake in her room as she watched the sun rise filled the empty void in her heart, though she didn’t realize what exactly she felt. Her excitement came from her video games - some of her games had a login bonus, extra items, and others small cutscenes / special events just for her! In that moment, she felt she was special to someone- she was important

That is, until she met you (and her friends).

You had planned everything - send a cute, romantic text to Chiaki telling her that you have a surprise gift for her birthday, and to meet you at the park at exactly 1 o’clock. Meanwhile, you and the rest of the class decorated a small area near a cluster of trees, bringing gifts (mostly video games), balloons, streamers, and a HUGE pink chocolate and strawberry cake with frosted flowers. To finish the display, you and Hajime tied a banner that read: HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHIAKI! to two trees in front of the table.

Chiaki was prepared to meet you and had a small smile on her face, clutching her phone tighter in anticipation. However, as she walked further into the park, her eyes widened in surprise. There stood all of you, holding pom-poms and noise makers. She froze as you all yelled out “Surprise!” and “Happy Birthday Chiaki!”

Chiaki felt an intense rush of emotion surge through her, a feeling becoming more familiar. She was used to feeling the monotony of life, the gasp of surprise and surge of happiness only coming from her games. But now, she couldn’t control the warmth that spread through her chest as she saw all of your smiling faces.

To go out of her way for her? It would be a long time before she could comprehend the thought. She wasn’t self-deprecating like Nagito, but it was a mere fleeting thought, perhaps a fact: she wasn’t worth the effort, you had better things to do, after all. Your happiness was the most important.

“Hey, Chiaki! Come over here!”

“W-Wait, is Chiaki okay?”

“H-Hey don’t cry, Chiaki! This is supposed to be a happy moment!”

“Idiot, she’s overwhelmed! Give her some space.”

“O-Oh Chiaki, please don’t cry…!”

Suddenly she felt you at her side, slowly placing your hand on her arm. The warmth reappeared when you were around her, and she smiled

“Sorry if we surprised you, Chiaki. I know you don’t like to be surprised. But since it’s your birthday, we wanted to do something different and special for you…” you said.

For you, Chiaki repeated. Yes, this was for her.

“Of course, we can still chill after the party’s over, or do whatever you’d like. But I know you wanted to see your friends, right? You know, everyone wanted to celebrate your birthday. I mean, you’ve done so much for us… You’re very important to us, Chiaki. Please never forget that.”

Chiaki’s legs moved on its own and jumped into your arms, a few tears slipping from her glistening eyes. After a moment of composing herself, she spoke.

“T-Thank you, [Name]. I can’t… I can’t say how much I… how much I…”

You were about to interrupt her, to reassure her that she didn’t need to say anything - you knew how she felt, until you felt her breath on your skin, her face mere inches away from yours.

“I love you…”

You kissed her forehead.

“Oh you’re too cute. I love you too. Now, let’s enjoy this party, okay Birthday Girl?”

ღ — CHIHIRO FUJISAKI

Chihiro was never one for big parties. The most they ever celebrated was ordering food from fancy restaurants and eating outside with their father. However, Chihiro had no qualms about this. They were so holed up in their room that the refreshing air, the good food, and their beloved father was enough to bring a smile to their face. It was always sunny, never a gloomy day or sad face - their father made sure of it. One of Chihiro’s fondest memories was cloud watching with their father while eating expensive, rich chocolate cake.

The luxury of true happiness was one few people could afford.

Once you started dating, Chihiro extended their home to you! Of course, if you had other plans, they wouldn’t be upset. Just the fact that you remembered their birthday was enough for them! But, as the good partner you are, you insisted that it wasn’t enough- in fact, it was the bare minimum! You were going to gift Chihiro a present, eat pastries you spent all night making, and lay in the grass all day and give them the best birthday they ever had!

Unfortunately, part of that plan was ruined. You were almost at Chihiro’s house when you felt drops of water fall on your face. Immediate panic rushed over you and you took off in a sprint. You hoped that Taichi had taken the food he ordered and any decorations he might’ve set up inside.

The rain seemed to grant you at least one blessing, as it started pouring once you entered the Fujisaki household. You spotted Taichi unfolding all of the decorations and frantically clearing the dining room table. Chihiro watched the rain pour out the window, still as a statue.

“Oh goodness, you’re here [Name]! I’m so sorry if you were drenched in the rain - I could have sworn the forecasts never mentioned any sort of weather like this! Oh, of all the days…” Taichi sighed.

You reassured him that you were only a little wet, but nothing too serious! You were more worried about Chihiro.

“Yes… If I could only remove all the rain clouds in the sky and bring back the sun… Dear, could you - if you wouldn’t mind, of course - could you check on Chihiro? I… I try to be a good father, but-but I have trouble, sometimes, being the support that Chihiro needs. Especially when it comes to words. But I trust you! And- And so does Chihiro...”

You, of course, accept. Chihiro was your partner, after all. You would be mad to ignore them.

“T-Thank you! Truly, I can’t thank you enough. Oh! I just had an idea,” Taichi said, glancing over at Chihiro before leaning closer to you. He spoke softly. “While we can’t have the party outside, that doesn’t mean we can’t have it here. You go entertain Chihiro, and I’ll decorate downstairs. I’ll call you when it’s all done. But- But make sure it stays a secret, okay?”

You nod once more, setting your sights on Chihiro by the window. You had made a promise - you were going to help Chihiro have the best birthday ever, and you weren’t going to fail!

As you approach them, you notice a small frown on their face. You felt your heart break in half - this is the opposite of what you wanted.

“Chihiro…” you said softly. Their eyes widened in surprise as they hesitantly turned towards you.

“O-Oh! Hello, [Name].” Their eyes, however, shifted away from yours. Chihiro was never one to hide their feelings, you thought, as you noticed Chihiro’s frown deepen. They must really be upset about this.

“I’m so sorry…” they said, their eyes glistening with tears. It was now your turn to be shocked.

“What? Oh, Chihiro, you have nothing to apologize for! None of us knew this was going to happen, so none of us should be apologizing - especially you!”

“W-Well, I know. But… But you came all this way, wanting to do something nice for me. And you got wet from the rain… A-And now, we can’t even go outside…”

Before Chihiro could go on, you hugged them from behind. “Chihiro, listen to me. I made a promise to myself that you would have the best birthday party ever. Sure, this may have been unexpected - but I’m not going to let this ruin your special day. Because…!”

The rain seemed to offer you another blessing, because as the rain continued to pour, your eyes landed on a pair of children splashing in puddles. Your heart pounded at the realization.

“Because we can still go outside!”

Chihiro stared at you in confusion. “But - But [Name], it’s still raining!”

Your eyes twinkled with excitement. “And when has something like a bit of rain stopped you from doing what you want, Chihiro?”

Chihiro blushed, now looking at the rain with a determined look in their eyes.

“Let’s walk outside, Chihiro. Let’s look at the sky and dance in the rain until we’re tired! Let’s have the greatest birthday ever, because we’re together, despite everything!”

Chihiro laughed, clutching you tightly. “Yes, you’re right! It doesn’t have to end! I don’t need to feel sorry for myself - because… because I have you! Oh, [Name], let me grab my raincoat, I think I have an extra for you. I’ll be right back!”

You waited as Chihiro ran upstairs, Taichi sending you a questioning glance. Yet, he smiled, knowing that they were in good hands. Surely, you made hundreds- no millions of stupid decisions, yet you knew this was not one of them. You and Chihiro would dance in the rain, until you finally grew warm in the cold air, and enter the house full of colorful decorations and a cake waiting to be eaten.

“Okay, I’m ready!” Chihiro said, handing you a raincoat. “Here, I’ll help you put it on!”

You kissed Chihiro’s head as they helped you put on the coat and a rain hat. Their frown was nowhere to be seen, any trace of sadness completely gone. Your heart rested easy now.

“Happy birthday, Chihiro. Let’s go have some fun!”

Baby Sam is very hard working and focused on whatever she's doing that sometimes, she forgets to take care of herself. But, based on the interactions of hers that I see on my tl, I can see that she is very playful but also can be serious. Hence, why I say that she'd be amazing with Kuroo Tetsurou. Kuroo is playful and an overall gremlin, but he's very caring ang knows exactly when to be serious and how serious. He'll help her with anything he can help her with, but he also knows when no to because it's something Zizi needs to do for herself. Likewise, Zizi knows when to be cheery to make Kuroo smile, but also when to sit and talk to Kuroo about a delicate matter. They'd both ground each other, while matching the same playful energy.

Melian and Matsukawa Issei would make a very interesting pairing. Both independent yet still co-dependent on each other. Melian knows how to calm Matsukawa after a tough day at work, and Matsukawa knows how to keep Melian from stressing. Matsukawa would also hype Melian up so much?? Ugh, I’m sorry but I need to rant right now.

I just watched a video explaining opinions on danganronpa characters, and as soon as it got to Nagito it made me so frustrated. Both the video itself and the chat.

I could only listen to the part were he calls Nagito the “Ultimate asspull.” Oh yeah cause having his ultimate luck talent, you know the one that gives him really good luck that’s followed by really bad luck, and using it to his advantage during the killing game is totally an asspull. I muted it for the rest and looked at the chat and that’s what *heh* ultimately made me type this.

The chat kept saying that his character was only “obsessed with hope” and multiple people of course misinterpreted his intentions during chapter one. They kept saying that he wanted to murder someone, that he was going to stab Hajime when the lights went out, which was not the case. He wanted to be the murder, not commit murder.

Sorry about this, I just hate how some people in this fandom only view these characters on a mere surface level instead of looking deep into and understanding these characters for who they are. How people can hate complicated characters like Nagito or Kokichi, but still like characters like Celest (who is a manipulative, lying, money hungry bitch who had one person murdered and killed another) or Korkiyo (who is an actual serial killer and was in an incestous relationship with his sister).

Again, sorry about the rant. I just needed to vent.

Nagito is the ultimate “asspull”?! He’s ‘only obsessed with hope’?! Okay, this actually made me so angry, cause he’s such a huge comfort character! In the game, he is literally SHOVED IN YOUR FACE, helps Hajime solver most, if not, all of the trials, we get to PLAY as him in chapter 4, he receives so much screentime in the anime, his OVA episode gives us so much depth about his character, not to mention we have the manga AND real fans who speak and write immaculately about fascinating fan theories about the man

And you get “hopehopehopehopehopehopehope” from that guy? That is ALL people get from one of the most well-written characters in the Danganronpa franchise?!

I said this a million times before, but I’ll say it again: NAGITO DIDN’T WANNA KILL ANYONE IN CHAPTER 1!

Not to mention, 60% of Kokichi fans never even played Danganronpa V3 before. The legit just saw Tiktoks of people cosplaying as him and thought that’s how he acted. I am so sick of seeing

If I was Kodaka, I’d actually be super pissed

He probably lost so many braincells creating these extremely complex and deep characters and he probably lost even more braincells seeing how the fans portray them

I totally agree with the last part as well, with people loving characters like Celeste and Korekiyo who have done WAYYYY worse than two of the most complicated characters. There is a reason why Nagito and Kokichi are huge comfort characters for me. I kin both of them and see so much of myself in both of them. The fact that so many fans that take the time to understand those characters and their analysis's get shot down because assholes saying “stfu, simp!” is so frustrating

And totally disregard the fact that over half the cast of each Danganronpa game killed someone innocent, but that’s just a slap on the wrist 😒

Even ‘uwu precious cinnamon rolls’ like Gundham Tanaka and Gonta killed someone! “Uwu soft boi” Keebo had BOMBS to commit mass murder. “Baby girl” Himiko made Gonta switch wires which played a huge part in Miu’s murder. Hell, fan-favorite Miu caused her own death AND Gonta’s by planning on kill Kokichi in the first place! Her reason:

“The world needs my genius!”

And she’s “Yas Queen!” to the fans?

Hi, I’m a Shuichi/Chiaki/Makoto!! I don’t know how to do this so uh sorry if its a bit messy but!! I’ll organize this by canon!! Makoto Naegi Canon + Info: - I don’t really have any memories, but I was close to Kyoko! I think my canon was close to canon, but I’m not sure! - I’d love to find anyone! I’m personally interested in finding a Mukuro, Komaru or Kyoko, but I’d be happy with anyone, either from the first game or second game! Chiaki Nanami (Project: Nanami) Canon + Info: - I found my Hajime already! Iwaizumi knew he shouldn’t feel anything for me. I’m his best friends little sister, for fuck’s sake. It’s just wrong, but he couldn’t help it.

The harder he tried to ignore his feelings and move on, the harder he fell.

Just thinking about how Oikawa would react to him holding feelings for his sister was enough to hold him back.

But there were always the other side of his mind that assured him that it was okay.

The answer was three months, and when Oikawa caught them, it wasn’t pretty.

Oikawa had come home early in after staying the night with his girlfriend, but upon entering, he found a shirtless Iwaizumi cooking breakfast in his kitchen while his sister was hugging him from behind.

Naturally, Oikawa was furious. How long have they been sneaking around? When did this start? How did this start? How could Iwaizumi put his hands on his sister?

After explaining everything to him (and a promised week’s supply of milkbread), he eventually came to terms with it. He wasn’t happy about it, but it was their life.

He absolutely did threaten Iwaizumi, though.

General headcanons:

He loves cuddling. He does have a bit of trouble asking for them, but the minute I lay down, he’s pulling me closer to him.

Since people liked my Teruteru posts, I’m going to be listing every character in V1 and V2 and saying if they are overrated or underrated and why. WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR BOTH GAMES/ANIME

V1:

Junko: overrated, obviously. She’s very pretty but other then that? Not the best lmao?? Abused and manipulated Mikan and Mukuro

Makoto: Boring, was carried through the whole game by kirigiri. Not even all that funny in the anime, he’s just a boring kid.

Togami: A spoiled rich boy that messed with poor Chihiro’s body. He’s cute but a total asshole and a twink (derogatory). He should have been a victim.

Toko: I love her personality and her design is very pretty, but the way they are further demonizing DID with her character is horrible and I do not stan.

Leon: Underrated boy, everyone gives him a lot of shit for being the first murderer. He’s cute, he’s got a funky lil shirt (that he shares with nagito?) and hes got some scottish roots like me. A good boi (minus the fact he killed someone.)

Maizono: Overrated, shes not even all that pretty. The REAL musical ultimate was Ibuki and you can’t convince me otherwise.

Hifumi: He never did anything *wrong* in v1, but he gives off this horrible vibe. Probably has a body pillow of Kisa from Fruits Basket or smth gross like that.

Kiyotaka: In the fandom, his personality has been muddled down to “old gay man” but lets be real, if this dude wasnt in a killing game, he’d be a c*p (o)

Aoi: Her personality is literally eating and big boobs and closed lesbian. Not a fleshed out character and honestly, Sakura should have survived, not her.

Mondo: You’ve heard of mommy and daddy issues, now get ready for “I accidently killed my big brother when he gave me his biker gang when I was literally 15 years old and now I lay awake for nights thinking about and on top of that I might be gay and oh my god I just got turned into butter.” issues

Yasuhiro: 100% underrated. Is there colorism in the fact he’s one of the only dark skinned characters in this series and his personality is literally “spout off random bullshit and have the whole fandom think i’m a druggie?” yeah, but if i remember correctly, in the anime, he’s actually really smart or something? (in the second anime, not the first.) And he was really kind when he was taking care of Kiyotaka when Mondo died. He’s a good character, minus the obvious racial stereotypes

Sakura: Deserved to live. She was a great friend to Aoi and sacrificed herself so her friend could keep going. She’s a good gorl.

Chihiro: Prefacing this with I’m a Chihiro Kinnie: overrated and everyone in the fandom sexualizes him. Or headcanons him as mtf or nonbinary. It literally explains why he dresses as a girl (he was v v weak and sickly so if he convinced everyone he was a girl, they wouldnt pick on him for being a weak boy). Headcanon what you want, but dont come at me with the “hE wAnTs To Be A GiRl” cause youre literally erasing his entired character and the REASON mondo was able to kill him.

Celestia: She’s so creepy and mean? and not even in a cool way I just don’t like her. If Junko wasnt the mastermind behind this game, it totally would have been celestia. Manipulated Hifumi, framed Yasuhiro, and killed Hifumi and Kiyotaka. Not a fan with the double kill tbh

Kirigiri: I personally don’t like her cause she has no personality beyond “gotta solve this mystery like im fuckin scooby doo” and “I can’t believe its daddy issues!”

Mukuro: literally wants to fuck her sister. No.

V2: (I’m not finished with it yet, just finished the Mikan trial)

Teruteru: underrated and over villainized. he’s literally a horny teenager and was just trying to a) protect everyone from nagito cause he thought twogami was nagito and b) just wanted his mom.

Nagito: literally insane lol. If I hear him say anything else about hope, I’m going to scream.

Nekomaru: No personality minus “I need to take a shit”

Akane: (see Aoi) they are literally the same character

Ibuki: overrated, but I can see why. She was really nice and cool. (I also have an Ibuki interject in my system so I can’t really bad mouth her.)

Mikan: Annoying at most. If Junko didnt hurt her, she probably wouldnt have killed anyone.

Chiaki: I get.... v bad vibes from her, but I also kin her so its an odd toss up

Hajime: Whole personality is “fuck off nagito” and “orange juice in a wine glass”

Mahiru: No my favorite, I didnt really like her, but she was really nice to Hiyoko so she’s okay in my book.

Hiyoko: Underrated because no one takes into consideration: she is litearlly like 16 or 17, shes under 5 feet tall, she’s never gone through a killing game before, shes probably terrified. Thats why she’s mean. And she’s not even mean to everyone, just to Mikan really (who didnt deserve if but she was a really easy target)

Fuyuhiko: boss baby, tiny boy, underrated. He lost his sister and his best friend, let him be.

Peko: Eh?? if she didnt have a literal slave mentality she’d be cool (and i dont think it was hiko’s fault, cause there are many times where he was just trying to treat peko like a friend and she was in full human shield mode.)

Gundham: nice design, but the theatrics are getting on my nerves. Whats with the hamsters? I like his scarf though

Kazuichi: literally a giant perv, but i like his design and I have a small soft spot for pervy characters. If he would have left Sonia alone, he would have been an okay character.

Sonia: overrated, annoying, would fuck ted bundy and run a true crime blog on this gods damn website. Not a good girl and I’m surprised she hasnt killed kazuichi yet.

i think. hm. this one really does alternate every five seconds, huh. i think my answer is gonna have to be sonia, though. i don’t write or talk about her nearly enough, but she’s absolutely perfect. i think she’s a really interesting character, and she’s also my wife.

my favorite male character

komaeda. i feel like i have to give extra detailed analysis for this one but i’m not really sure i can rn. just. a fascinating character with such a strong, yet intrinsically flawed, moral code, who is both a victim of surroundings and trauma and a direct perpetrator in excaberating other... Not Good surroundings (like a killing game, hypothetically of course.) i sort of kin him so i mean, what can you do.

my favorite book/season/etc

super danganronpa two: goodbye despair. my favorite plot, my (surprisingly) favorite cast, a lot of murders and trials i liked... that game makes me emotional.

my favorite episode (if its a tv show)

i haven’t watched the anime but i do know there’s one part in dr3 future where like, shit gets fucked with kirigiri if you know what i mean. it makes my best friend cry (@celestial-nova i love you). but i also like the ova.

the eng voice actor of rantaro and hajime could literally step on me and i would die. but the japanese va of makoto and nagito is also talented as hell, and kaede and kyoko’s eng va is also wonderful.

they stopped after than but congrats you now have two men simping for you (teach me your ways user chan)

suga loves the fact you can play the ukukele and sing

i believe suga loves to sing as well (have you heard his singing voice like i am simping )

sometimes the pair of you will do duets and depending on your range you either take the higher or lower parts

yes suga does make you cover disney songs, he is a sucker for disney

if you were feeling up for it, i can totally see you and suga like making a youtube channel with your covers and stuff

like people love your content because it is so wholesome

i would start the user chan + suga senpai fanclub

now i can see suga like reading in his spare time but not bookworm level you know what i mean

sometimes when you are reading suga thinks you look so serence and his dorky smile begins to form (like it is toooo cute)

now if the book you are reading is one suga has already read he will tease you by giving false spoilers

also over dinner you too will discuss the book in great detail and you definetely like assign each other a character to each other (like to kin)

now suga is also a very patient man, so he wouldn’t press you to much if there was if you were feeling down

however that doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t give you snuggles

like he would just hold you and rock you in his lap if that is what you needed

now this may come as a shock to you all but can 100% see suga hating the mornings

like he cannot function without his coffee

so every morning you wake him so gently and always make him a cup of coffee to go with it

suga is literally like uwu

suga finds it hilarious when you get pocessive of your kitchen like diachi once tried help and the look of murder you gave him was priceless

he has photos too

now because suga is a certified wine aunt i don’t think he does much of the cooking

he just sits there looking pretty with a bottle of vino

so he straight up vibes with you taking charge

when you get caught up in your work, mum suga is realised

he will literally turn the wifi off so you cannot do anyway work

but don’t worry he always brings up your favourite food and maybe a bottle of pink gin too

overall you have you have a charming, fun loving but a bit too relaxed roommate.

Girl Alchemist Egg--Tale of the Rose track 1, translation

As far as I know, nobody else seems to be translating J. A. Seazer’s latest Utena album, which came out in August, to English (please correct me if I’m wrong)... so the job falls to me.

This is track 1, 知恵の竈(アルデル)実験祈祷室, or “Aludel of Wisdom Experimental Prayer Room”. An aludel is a kind of pot used in alchemy; it goes in a furnace (this is significant).

EDIT: I accidentally left out the romaji for one verse and missed a reference in the title; the version with all corrections (at least for now) is here.

EDIT 2: I changed my translation of the title to “Wisdom’s Aludel Oratory-Laboratory”. See here for my explanation as to why that’s a better translation.

金より不純物を除きそれを純粋な形と成しそれをうまくなし遂げる者はかくて、賢者の石を作りえようそれは偉大な力の「石」であり「石」と呼ばれていて石ではない

The first time that I made projection was upon a Monday, the 17th of January, about noon, in my house, Pernelle only being present, in the year of the restoring of mankind, 1382. This was upon Mercury, whereof I turned half a pound, or thereabouts, into pure Silver, better than that of the Mine. And afterwards, following always my Book, from word to word, I made projection of the Red Stone upon the like quantity of Mercury, in the presence likewise of Pernelle only, in the same house, the five and twentieth day of April following, the same year, about five o'clock in the evening; which I transmuted truly into almost as much pure Gold, better assuredly than common Gold, more soft and more pliable. I may speak it with truth, have made it three times, with the help of Pernelle, who understood it as well as I. --Nicolas le Valois[xiv]

[i] The last two lines of this verse are from Les Cinq Livres or La Clef des Secrets, by Nicolas le Valois, a French alchemist rumored to be the deceased Nicolas Flamel, supposedly using an alias after attaining immortality through the Philosopher’s Stone. I don’t know of any English translation of this text, but the original French is online at https://alchimie.000webhostapp.com/cinq_livres_valois.html. It’s likely that the first lines are also from alchemical texts; I just haven’t been able to identify them

[ii] Eternal wisdom—a phrase from Heinrich Khunrath, used in the title of his book The Amphitheater of Eternal Wisdom. There is an English translation by Peter J. Forshaw, but I have not yet been able to find it; I have, however, contacted the translator inquiring how to obtain it.

[iii] Carl Jung, Psychology and Alchemy: “The dragon is probably the oldest pictoral symbol in alchemy of which we have documentary evidence. It appears as the Ouroboros, the tail-eater, in the Codex Marcianus, which dates from the tenth or eleventh century, together with the legend 'the One, the All'. Time and again the alchemists reiterate that the opus proceeds from the one and leads back to the one, that it is a sort of circle like a dragon biting its own tail. For this reason the opus was often called circulare (circular) or else rota (the wheel). Mercurius stands at the beginning and end of the work: he is the prima materia, the caput corvi, the nigredo; as dragon he devours himself and as dragon he dies, to rise again in the lapis. He is the play of colours in the cauda pavonis and the division into the four elements. He is the hermaphrodite that was in the beginning, that splits into the classical brother-sister duality and is reunited in the coniunctio, to appear once again at the end in the radiant form of the lumen novum, the stone. He is metallic yet liquid, matter yet spirit, cold yet fiery, poison and yet healing draught - a symbol uniting all the opposites.”

[iv] This is a clear reference to Genesis 1:1-2. “Like unto God” recalls the story of the Garden of Eden; Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat the fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Evil because it would make them like God. Alchemists were also seeking knowledge that would make them like God, although the authors quoted in this song emphasized that one could not attain it without God’s blessing.

[v] These are all names for different techniques in the chemical process. Most are still used in chemistry today (only the terms “reflection” and “descent” are no longer used, as far as I know).

[vi] Valois explains that “water” means something different in alchemy. Basically, this water is a truly universal solvent, capable of absorbing anything into itself. He uses an interesting metaphor for this: “It's this Maid Beïa, which has not yet been corrupted or lost its liberty, to marry infirm and ill-shaven bodies, as captives are, who can never leave their filthy prisons without the help of men. Thus preserving liberty with its integrity, we see in a philosophical manner this luminous star making infinite circulation turns, until it came in some reign.”

[vii] Putrefaction, the nigredo, the black stage in the alchemical process. The idea is that there must be sacrifice to facilitate new growth.

[viii] The philosopher’s stone is sometimes called the “celestial ruby.”

[ix] These two lines are from The Rosary of the Philosophers; however, I used the translation of the quote found in the translation of the Exposition, rather than the original text, although that can be found in English too: http://sociedadquimicamexico.org/rosarium.pdf. Here, it’s given as, “O blessed greenness, which engenders all things.”

[x] Many alchemists, both Jewish and non-Jewish, drew on the Kabballah (Jewish mystical texts), although how well they really understood it is questionable. I myself am not at all well-versed in this, but it seems that in the Kabballah, the color green represents healing and harmony.

[xi] The Green Lion typically represents the same thing as the dragon. E.g. The Glory of the World mentions “the Green Lion that imbibes so much of its own spirit.”

[xii] The author of The Glory of the World wrote of “indelible, living, or Divine fire, of that kind which God has placed in the Sun; and wherein God Himself burns as with Divine love for the consolation of all mankind... This is the fire of the Sages which they describe in such obscure terms, as to have been the indirect cause of beguiling many innocent persons to their ruin; so even that they have perished in poverty because they knew hot this fire of the Philosophers. It is the most precious fire that God has created in the earth, and has a thousand virtues -- nay, it is so precious that men have averred that the Divine Power itself works effectually in it. It has the purifying virtue of Purgatory, and everything is rendered better by it. It is not wonderful, therefore, that a fire should be able to fix and clarify Mercury, and to cleanse it from all grossness and impurity. The Sages call it the living fire, because God has endowed it with His own Divine, and vitalising power.”

[xiii] Different names for the athanor, a kind of furnace. The alchemists viewed their work as the creation of a microcosmos, a “petite universe” if you will. “Cosmic furnace” doesn’t seem to have been common in English, but one does find the French version, fourneau cosmique.

[xiv] This passage is adapted from Exposition of the Hieroglyphical Figures. By attributing it to Valois, Seazer continues in the tradition of claiming him as part of the legend of Flamel. We can infer from this passage and its attribution that the two voices we hear singing this song are meant to represent Nicholas and Per(e)nelle, Flamel’s wife, purported to have been an alchemist in her own right.
