an old friend and i met up in person and wound up talking about good omens (ofc). they listed a few reasons why they are just like crowley, and i listed a few reasons why i am just like aziraphale, and then i noticed...
they were wearing all black. black shirt, black pants, black docs, black hair. the only exception was their grey socks, which had a giant, green letter C on them.
i was wearing a beige corduroy sweater over a white turtleneck, jeans, beige socks, white shoes, blonde hair.
we laughed so hard when we realized we even dress like them on accident

aziraphale's relationship with heaven vs crowley's relationship with hell in S2 serves as this beautiful, heartbreaking metaphor for the choice that so many queer people with unaccepting - and in many cases abusive - families find themselves forced to make.
crowley has made the leap. he's cut himself off, and when they've tried to stay in touch or even bring him back, he's always resisted. "we're better than that, you're better than that!". in a way he's been through it before - he was rejected by heaven, and so it makes sense to him to take the opportunity to reject hell on his own terms. it doesn't come without consequence, of course. so many queer people find themselves having to suppress their identities until they're financially independent - cut to crowley living in his car. but he's made the choice, and he's free to do his own thing now.
aziraphale, at the start of the season, is also more or less completely separate from heaven; we know from crowley "they don't talk to him anymore", and he's not making any effort to get in touch with them. but then when they ask him to come back, they manipulate him again. the metatron offers him coffee and then tells him "i've ingested things in my time, you know" - a world away from gabriel's "why do you consume... that?". he's assured that the things which he thought made him too... different, too not-good for heaven, are in fact okay.
aziraphale was finally living his own life, far away from them, and doing the things he enjoyed, the things that they always shamed him for. but now he thinks, maybe he can go back and this time they'll accept him - it doesn't have to be like it was before! he's changed and maybe they have too, and if they haven't then maybe they'll listen to him! he can show them how to be better, he can make a difference. he isn't yet ready to face the reality that he can never be the person (well, angel) that they want him to be, not without losing sight of what makes him him. he might wish he could bring himself to say no, to cut them off, but he can't do it. because despite it all, he still has hope that they can change. and of course he does - years of trauma have told him time and time again that they're the good guys, after all. so he thinks, if they can't change, then who can? if they can't accept him, who will?

Azazel squawked, frantically, trying to do what he did best and take the fall for another, but Jophiel was far too fast for him.
The angel's thin, wirey body had played out wide to protect the demon, to trap him the way a shark cage traps a diver and—
And the squelch was sickening.
"What have you done?!" Azazel cried.
Unlike, say, a snake, the Owl had exceptional vision. Although he could not perceive the color of it, the demon saw ichor seeping through the angel's sternum, where War's sword had pierced him.
Jophiel merely smiled. "I did what I should have done a long time ago, I think. If anybody should have fallen it was me, Aziraphale—wasn't that your name?" He toppled sideways with a shudder and a low, pained moan.
The dust did not deserve his blood.
Azazel, the barn owl, the Banshee, did what he was known best for, he screamed. It was a terrifying, threatening sound, and it did it's purpose: War skittered away into the darkness.
"You have so- so much faith in the Almighty, angel," Jophiel whispered. The words hitched. Ichor spilled from his lips. "And I have so much faith in you. Look at you.... You're brilliant,"
================================================
"And I have so much faith in you. Look at you.... You're brilliant,"
OKAY SO JUST!!! ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!! AND YET AGAIN YOU'VE PREDICTED SOMETHING (not telling u what) THAT I'VE ALREADY WRITTEN UP !!!!! I wish I had more energy to finish this, but i still needed to draw something otherwise I was going to go crazy! AMAZING WRITING!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!

Not to be too involved in fandom discourse but I think that the good omens fandoms (and most fandoms out there) has an issue with going back at the source material. I don't mean this in an patronizing way because I do it too, and it happens, you get so involved with a character and with a story that some things become blurred and more reflective of yourself (the watcher/reader) then of the story itself.
But sometimes, specially if you happen to find yourself hating a character that it's literally part of the main couple of the story you love, I think it's good to go back to that story you love and revisit the things you like about it and remind yourself what they really are like in canon.
The thing about Good Omens is that it is of course a very touching love story with very important themes, but it's also a clever comedy about two immortal beings and the insane divine/human world. Aziraphale and Crowley aren't two beings who are torturing themselves because of their love for centuries, they love and have fun with each other and the silly good/evil things the world has to offer.

david tennant in all good omens interviews: yannow i would say that aziraphale and crowley are the yin to each other's yang
michael sheen in all good omens interviews: aziarphale and crowley are in love and are currently having the nastiest sex imaginable. they are supposed to be enemies but in reality they are best friends that know each other in the most raw and raunchy ways possible. i love every and all fanworks of these two characters, particularly the ones that depict me making sweet sweet love to the lovely and talented david tennant
