First Years with Ash’s Pokemon
Headcanons of the TWST boys with Ash’s Pokemon: First Years Edition!
Sorry they're kind of short, hope you all enjoy!
Ace- Gliscor
Tumblr media
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!?!?
vampire-bat scorpion thing :/
Ace is completely confused about Gliscor, and is also low key terrified
I mean, the way the met, Gliscor literally swooped in and picked Ace up and into the air
so while Ash and Gliscor are laughing their butts off, Ace is up in the air, scarred for life
also doesn't help when Ash explains the dex entry about how silent and deadly Gliscor is
let him down!
Ash sorta starts to take pity on him and makes Gliscor put him down, but now whenever Ace shows up, Gliscor will always be there to swoop him into a 'hug'
spare him pls (lmao no)
Deuce- Sceptile
Tumblr media
as Sceptile stared at the poor boy, there was only one thought in his head
SO COOL!!!
meanwhile, Sceptile's looking at him like "who's this weird lost child?"
"the one that destroyed the chandelier"
"a h"
Takes a while, but Deuce manages to just barely get Sceptile to warm up to him
the two then have this weird truce, mainly because Sceptile kind of likes him if he ignores the dumbassery
totally has the same "talk shit, get hit" vibes Deuce gets, so there's a sort of unity the two gain when protecting Ash/when they just generally get pissed off
Deuce watches Sceptile use his moves and he's awestruck, lmao
"No Deuce, you can't learn Leaf Blade..." -Ash Ketchum
Sceptile sorta just keeps to himself for the most part though
they can actually coexist in the same room unlike Ace and every single one of Ash's pokemon lmao
Jack- Lycanroc
Tumblr media
a wolf, with rocks in it???
doesn’t it hurt?
and he gets his answer when Lycanroc loses its mind when he tries to pet it
"yeah, don't do that, Lycanroc hates it when people or pokemon mess up his fur"
"oh NOW you tell me" meanwhile he's got a rock painfully poking his side
Ash explains how Lycanroc actually went on full rampages whenever he got dirty, and Jack is glad he didn't get an Accelrock to the face
it takes a bit, but Lycanroc does warm up to Jack more than the rest of Ash's pokemon, mainly because wolf solidarity
if Ash is hanging out with Jack, then you best believe that Lycanroc is close by
Epel- Gible
Tumblr media
a baby?
A DRAGON BABY!?
watched the baby pull a draco meteor and epel regrets underestimating him
is lowkey concerned when Gible just begins chewing on Ash's head, but she acts like she doesn't feel it, so he sorta just stands there
out of all of Ash's Pokemon, Gible is one of the few to warm up to the guys quite quickly
Gible bites epel too jbksjahjds
Vil, upon seeing the marks, has a heart attack lmao
but in all seriousness, Gible actually really likes Gible, and the dragon is growing on Epel, so if he ever does get bit again, he literally just shrugs it off
it's how Gible shows his affection, VIL
Ortho- Krookodile
Tumblr media
this is probably the weirdest pairing
saw Krookodile and thought he was the coolest ever, especially with his sunglasses
enjoys watching Krookodile train with all of Ash's other strong/fully evolved pokemon, especially since he can record data for himself later
with such a wide movepool (knowing Dragon Claw, Aerial Ace, Dig, and Stone Edge) Ortho is in awe
100% the two would power up a death laser/Stone Edge in an attempt to destroy the school together
the amount of pictures he has with Krookodile is astounding, Idia is lowkey jealous
his personal fave is of him with Krookodile and they both have sunglasses on, looking cool
Sebek- Sirfetch’d
Tumblr media
A BATTLE OF KNIGHTS
Sirfetch’d does not like Sebek one bit XD
Sebek is too loud for Sirfetch'd, and he insults their trainer any chance he gets
HOW DARE-
i wouldn't be surprised if Sirfetch'd has attacked Sebek on multiple occasions lol
even then, i'm pretty sure Sebek takes it as a challenge and tries to fight back, despite Ash's warnings
every time he gets his ass kicked though, he blames Ash for it, and at one point, homegirl just picks him up and tosses him across the yard
Sirfetch'd is laughing and Sebek would be lying if he said he wasn't scared (because he was)
girl can carry and throw a tree, idk why he wasn't scared before dwbjsksm
slowly learns to respect Ash and her ability to keep up with her Pokemon
grows to tolerate Sirfetch'd, and same is said for the 'mon
but the tensions is definitely still there lmao

so for a bit of Pokemon culture history that actually could be lost to the times, I'd like to briefly mention Female Shadow Pokemon.
Tumblr media
When Gen 3 first started with Ruby and Sapphire in 2003, all 386 Pokemon were programmed into the game. (flexing on Modern games tbh.) But because RuSa only had like, 200 available to catch in it, and gen 2-3 transfers weren't a thing, this means 186 pokemon simply weren't available without cheating. One of those? Ditto. Yeah, the daycare slut wasn't a tool we could use. This made female pokemon incredibly valuable because that's how you could breed them. Want more of your starter? Hope it was female! Fossils? Same!Luck out and find a Feebas spot? Be sure to get a female! etc etc.
Then Pokemon Colosseum came. And while now it's mainly remembered for its story's gritty tone and the slightly higher difficulty for a Pokemon game, at the time it released a good number of the shadow Pokemon weren't available in RuSa! for example, the Johto starters & legendaries, but also Pokemon like Tyranitar, Shuckle, Houndoom, Furret, and Togetic. So just a silly assortment of newly available monsters!
But still no Ditto. So that meant when getting these new Pokemon in the game, you'd want to be resetting their (often one and only) encounter to make sure it's female so you could breed more. And Colosseum is not a quick game, and you have to view the credits before you can trade. So it was a pain in the neck if you needed to go back and get a female.
Tumblr media
This of course changed a few months later when FireRed and LeafGreen released, which DID have Ditto in it, as well as the remaining missing dex entries. (Well, they made Lugia an event for some reason, but then Lugia got his own game with Gale of Darkness.)
But yeah. You wanted to catch female Shadow Pokemon in Colosseum. This brief and now antiquated bit of strategy would likely never occur to a person who wasn't there for that very brief period of time. like 5 months tops. and looking at gen 3 holistically and in retrospect, why would it matter? Ho-oh was the only Pokemon that you needed Colosseum for, everything else became available elsewhere, and future gens would make significant enhancements to breeding anyways. But at the time, it did matter.
Ditto was never unavailable in a game after gen 3. Genius Sonority, the company that managed to make a whole 3D Pokemon RPG that released on the GameCube in the one year between RuSa and FRLG, still works with The Pokemon Company. They do Cafe ReMix. You'd think they'd pick GS over ILCA to make BDSP, considering they still work together, but apparently not!
There's no greater point here, I was just reminiscing and realized most people who weren't neck deep in the 2004 Pokemon scene probably wouldn't ever know about the weird situation. And I know y'all like niche situations.

Note
Squirtle line? I actually like the first two stages, but not Blastoise. I miss that fluffy tail Wartortle had and sad Blastoise didn't keep it in.
(Note: This is a rollover review from yesterday; all other asks will be answered tomorrow.)
Tumblr media
Squirtle's got a pretty classic design. It's mostly just a normal turtle at this stage—starters often start out fairly plain—but the bipedal stance and curly tail add just enough flavor to keep it from being bland. I also think the use of color here is strong; a nice aqua color for the body to convey the water-typing, and a counter-shaded shell that helps give the body definition. I wouldn't have minded the shell being more of a red than a brown (the anime actually over-saturates it to red constantly), but otherwise I have no real complaints here.
I also want to give a special shout-out to the mouth shape. The beaked look is reminiscent of a snapping turtle, and is just inherently more interesting than having a generic curved happy mouth.
Tumblr media
Wartortle, in my opinion, is where the line starts to get interesting. The addition of some lovely feathered ears, coupled with an even curlier tail, now lighter than the body, pushes it from "fairly standard turtle" to "cool monster design". It also gives it a theme; specially, it's based on the minogame, a turtle associated with immortality with seaweed growing from its shell. Hence this 'dex entry:
Tumblr media
A few other tweaks, such as a more blue-ish body color and the addition of claws, help further separate it from Squirtle while still keeping it a logical continuation of the elements there. I do think the body's blue color could've stood to be darker for contrast's sake, and the lighter blue might've made more sense as white, but as a whole, I'm a big fan of this design.
Tumblr media
If Blastoise always looked completely disconnected from Wartortle to you, that's because: it is. Originally, Blastoise had a pre-evo in the form of what seems to be a sleepy turtle with bubble canons (left), and Wartortle had a more minogame-esq evo (right); both lines were designed by two different people. It's likely they were merged into one line because the original 190 needed to be cut to 150 due to file size restrictions, and two turtles might've seemed redundant.
Tumblr media
I can't offer any opinions on these designs designs as all we have are the terrible Gen 1 backsprites, but I have to say that while it does make sense to want to merge the two to keep both designs, it probably would've been better to keep them separate. While the colors and shell designs help with coherency a little, the minogame theme is gone completely, along with all of Squirtle and Wartortle's most distinctive features. In addition, the sudden appearance of guns, different mouth, different tail, segmented forearms, and different underside pattern feels jarring.
This also leads to the side-effect of Wartortle now feeling disconnected; I can potentially see how Squirtle leads into Blastoise, but it's clearly going off in a different direction. While I love Wartortle's design and think it's the strongest of the three, it probably would've been best to adjust it to better fit the new direction when they merged the lines.
All of that said, Blastoise's design in isolation is fine. The design has some good bulk to it that makes sense as a creature with powerful canons, throwing cat ears on a turtle helps it to be a bit less "normal", and the way the guns are integrated into the shell is neat.
I do feel like the guns themselves are too mechanical, as these were the "what exactly is a 'Pokemon'" days. They clearly have machinery in them and can move and adjust position, something only artificially made or modified Pokemon sport nowadays, so it's just weird that Blastoise is basically part cyborg. The actual cannon idea is fine, but it probably would've made more sense if the water came directly out of protrusions in the shell.
Tumblr media
Mega Blastoise is at least not too complicated, but honestly, this design never did it for me. I feel like the over-exaggerated top-mounted canon makes it look like it's going to be knocked over by the force of its own blasts. The smaller arm canons with extra shells are interesting, but overshadowed by the larger one too much, and the random pointed chin and "brows" make it look less like Blastoise to me. It's not terrible—better than Venasaur's mega, in that it at least changes things in a meaningful way—but nothing particularly interesting.
Also, why the hell was this not water/steel?
Tumblr media
G-max Blastoise, on the other hand, I love—it's one of the few times I prefer a g-max design over a mega. All of the awkwardness of the mega is gone in favor of just giving it a central-mounted cannon, which feels much less forced while still helping to emphasize the guns. This is also compounded by giving the shell a multi-layered shell, which feels like a natural extension of the cannon holes in the original design.
I do however question one of two or the more minor things in the design, such as the random triangles on the legs/tail that add nothing or the underbelly being red, which reduces contrast. I also feel like the cannons would've made more sense and been less cluttered if there was just one larger cannon in each hole instead of two. However, I think this is a strong design as a whole, and I honestly kind of like it more than original Blastoise for at least going all-out and giving us a more unique turtle design.
Overall, I think that Squirtle and Wartortle have a very strong set of designs, but ending with Blastoise makes little sense continuity-wise. Blastoise's mega looks a bit awkward; the g-max is a far superior design. Overall, some solid concepts here only bogged down by Gen 1's file size limitations.

Gilleon 2023
Okay out of all my themed Eeveeltuion fakemon, this one I decided to update the design the most, if your curious what the first version looked like, here's the link to it on my DeviantArt account https://www.deviantart.com/eternity9/art/Themed-Eeveelutions-Dex007-From-the-Black-Lagoon-798499531 It's Based/Themed after the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Name: Gilleon  Type: Water / Grass Ability: Damp / Swift Swim Hidden Ability: Torrent Classification: Swamp Fakémon Dex Entry:               Sometimes called the 'Swamp Vaporeon', Gilleon is a Eeveelution that can only be found in one mysterious bayou, (Probably the same swamp the Feralighoul fakemon comes from)
Tumblr media
Where in the middle of said swamp there is a large pond with a huge mossy rock sticking out from the centre (I now imagine its actually a dormant Regi-Fakemon, maybe I'll design that someday) and it is said if you evolve Eevee there it will evolve into Gilleon. Though why one would do that is a mystery as Gilleon is considered a very aggressive eeveelution, its very territorial and quick to attack those it deems its enemies, only strong willed trainer's can handle the primal aggression this Fakemon now has.
-------------------------------------
Again the Pokemon Professor would send the player character to pick up an item from a research facility in a swamp, where the scientist are studying the unique properties of the swamp as it seems to host a variety of rare Pokemon.
At the facility one of the scientist has a Gilleon, but its oddly aggressive to everyone and its trainer if sadden/confused why this is as they and Eevee had been friends, but ever since it evolved it no longer obeys them and keeps running off.
The story would be about helping this scientist and Gilleon broken friendship and getting to the heart of the problem, while also helping out around the facility as you have to wait a few days before you can leave because the ferry you arrived on is broken and needs to be fixed.

Chapter 5
Tumblr media
Using attract on my partner in confusion GONE WRONG
When you’re. When yo. You’re. Gay.
But why do I keep getting borderline NSFW chapter titles, send help
Tumblr media
“Local fairy type wreaks havoc, breaks laws of spacetime to transform a lively forest into a frozen feudal estate: more at 11″
Tumblr media
Yeah, I know! Scary, right? Honestly, just send Mewtwo in: one glare at Togetic and he’ll fix the problem in no time flat.
Tumblr media
Team Heavenly gets our first real assignment! (Ignore the reflection on the screen, I do not wish to be Perceived)
Tumblr media
To recruit Pokémon, you say? Sounds great! How do you plan on doing it, Dusclops?
“Its body is hollow. It is said that those who look into its body are sucked into the void.”  -Pokémon Diamond/Pearl ‘Dex entry
...Oh. Okay. *inches away slowly*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s Team Slacker, with Venusaur as Slowpoke and Steelix as Slakoth. They’ve clearly grown too old for this exploration nonsense.
Tumblr media
Okay I guess I was wrong about the Outlaw jobs being out of commission! Or do they only show up after Waterfall Cave?
Uh, what’s that? Sure, I’ll do some... but not today. Why? B-because I’m a cow- uhhh I mean, because of the waterfall mission! That’s totally why.
Tumblr media
More Team introductions! Team Flame being made up of Grass types... how ironic.
Tumblr media
Uh. No. I can’t imagine that. Sorry ._.
Tumblr media
Aw, the dialogue belonging to Sunny Form Cherrim fits so well here!
So, Shiftry is obviously Bellsprout. The other two I wasn’t so sure of, but a quick search on the internet helped me out. Here we have Combee as Camerupt, and Cherrim as Ponyta. Has a real woodlands vibe if you ask me.
Tumblr media
Eevee?! Good to see you, lad! (For those curious: Eevee is standing in for Zangoose, Stunky for Scyther, and Croconaw for Sandslash
I mean, all three of you do have claws, so... Randomizer, you’re off the hook this time.
Some other updates in Nautical Cottage:
Tumblr media
👀 Ohhhh, gimmie gimmie gimmie! I already have tickets to redeem!
Rotom: ???
Tumblr media
Remember the Dojo? Good news: it’s open!
Tumblr media
Kinda weird to hear him talk about his marrow though... my guy, you’re boneless.
Tumblr media
“Secret Waterfall” isn’t randomized, it seems. Ah well, we’ll see the new name soon enough.
Tumblr media
*insert temporal flashback shenanigans here*
Tumblr media
I noticed this when our first Time Gear was stolen, but Pokémon that are shown as silhouettes in the base game... well, that doesn’t show up here. You’ll see what I mean in a later photo.
Tumblr media
Another thing I thought I noticed, and this confirms it! Despite Andrea being marked as female, she’s using one of the male tone styles. (I’ve always seen girl partners say “Use all your courage!” here.) Interesting!
Tumblr media
Oh boy, here we go. After the fresh hell I’ve faced the past few chapters, I wonder what awaits us now...
Tumblr media
Woah, funky neon noodle cave! AKA the Luxurious Moor.
As it turns out, my fears were unfounded! For once, the team marched through the 8 floors without facing a single Monster House or activating a devastating trap. In fact, I only have one real item to discuss: recruitment. Unfortunately no one new joined us, but I wanted to take a peak at the variety of Pokémon between floors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s about what you would expect for, well, a randomized list. Note to self: get in the habit of checking potential recruits every floor so I don’t get jump scared by a freaking Palkia or something.
Tumblr media
Noooo Andrea, don’t get distracted by the shiny things... you’re so sexy pretty, aha...
Tumblr media
Andrea. Andrea, no-
Tumblr media
Real time footage of what happened next.
Tumblr media
With the reminder that Horsea is Teddiursa, Toxicroak is Vigorith, and Linoone is Ursaring, we add to the crew Ralts as Mankey and Barboach as Primeape! (Yeah I know they don’t really show up after this but still.)
Tumblr media
The... huh. Well, I guess it could feel like a “brilliant fire” to your muscles.
Tumblr media
I just found this discrepancy funny.
Tumblr media
I’m howling that elder Torkoal shows up as a Riolu. Who the heck are you calling a youngster, little dudette?!
The next two shots showed some funky text placement, probably to adjust for the character length of Brilliant Fire:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, here’s the promised photo from the flashbacks:
Tumblr media
When they take away the non-existent shadow, the animation shows Totodile basically doing a somersault and getting up. It’s pretty comical.
What’s left is basically a montage of story-related things, but nothing new per se.
Tumblr media
“Yeah man, I’m telling you! This whole ‘Secret Waterfall’ business is just a giant cover up from Big Government! Next they’re gonna take away our right to bare iron thorns!”
...That physically hurt to type.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rip to all of Andrea’s hopes and dreams, they did not live long 😔✊
Tumblr media
🥺️💖
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wonder if the name of Teresa’s ability is gonna be randomized 🤔 I really hope so because that has the potential to be immensely funny.
Tumblr media
And lastly, the initial Expedition announcement from Totodile.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading 😊 Chapter 6: (Insert nonsensical title here) has just been processed. Please allow 3-7 days for your order to be shipped.

Ok so thinking about ara again but for some reason I zeroed in on ZoroAra (aka the au where she dies in hisui and becomes A zoroark). Sent her to uva academy for some reason, mostly because I wanted to think about what her dorm would look like, so here's some details (im rambling rn):
The curtains are always drawn to darken the room, and the temperature's always pretty low
She has a few framed pictures, including: A very old-looking picture of her and the Hisui Gang, A more recent picture of her ten-year-old self with her family and the Hoenn gang, and a fairly new picture of her with Ingo and Emmet. Also, some group shots and portrait shots of her various Pokemon.
If the player was to look at her bed, the text would read, "There's a lot of white Pokemon hair on the sheets." (Btw none of her Pokemon have white fur. Ooooh how mysterious I wonder how that got there)
She has a carved Pokeshi doll on her windowsill.
She also has a bookshelf with a number of books. Sitting front and center is a thick book with a blue cover. The pages are worn, yellowed, heavily annotated with multiple different people's handwriting, and have lots of notes and other papers sticking out from between the pages. (Professor Laventon transcribed all the data to a different book and let her keep the original dex when she had to leave.) If interacted with, it would open up a menu that would let the player go to the following pages: Decidueye, Gallade, Garchomp, Walrein, Ninetails, Dusclops, and Zoroark (aka her Hisuian team and her.) It would open up to the actual pages and PLA dex entries for the Pokemon, with a few extra notes in the margins.
Her kitchen would feature a teapot on the stove and a recipe book open to potato mochi lol
the whole theming of the room would probably be light purples, pinks, and greens. I feel like those colors just suit her.
Besides details in her room, I think it'd be funny if npcs would sometimes talk about her and how strange she is. Stuff like she only ever attends night classes, she has strangely glowy yellow eyes, her hair always seems to float, her teeth are sharp, and the way she talks to Pokemon you'd think she understands their language. Probably one or two would mention how she used to be the Champion of the Hoenn Region, but went missing for a couple years and came back... strange.
Ara can't create perfect illusions because she's bad at being a Zoroark and also deception is simply not in her nature. Disguising herself as a human, she can get pretty close, but Zoroark elements tend to bleed through.
The only people in on the secret are Clavell because he's the director and probably should know, Nurse Miriam because what if Ara gets hurt and needs her help or something, and Jacq because he's her uncle. Raifort is probably on to her but doesn't know anything for certain. Oh and dammit Geeta would probably have to know but I hate Geeta so we'll ignore that fact
Its a little awkward, technically being a Pokemon who trains Pokemon, but she talks it out with the Pokemon she catches and makes sure they're cool with it. If they're not, she doesn't mind releasing them.
Honestly she's just here to keep her nose clean and do the gym challenge, trying to relieve her early days as a trainer before Everything. No missions from Arceus, no saving the world, no taking down evil teams, no maniacal legend-obsessed people trying to take over the world by stealing ancient magical artifacts, no time travel-- oh arceus damn it there's a time machine. She probably gets sucked into Operation Starfall a little but the player would still be doing the bulk
Yeah she'd somehow, against her better judgement, end up on the Area Zero mission, where she'd have to reveal her secret to the player, Nemona, Arven, and Penny. But honestly they're cool with it. Fluffy
Wow this turned out longer than I meant it to

Welcome to classpecting-pokemon!!
welcome, one and all, to the hell of this distortion world! i'll be your classpecting master here, mod gira! but before you request, i need to lay down a few ground rules and a DNI, because while chaos reigns supreme down here, i still don't tolerate it from anyone other than yours truly.
--RULES--
check if requests are open or not [requests: OPEN! feel free to submit a pokemon!]
if you are here to criticize my analysis of a pokemon's classpect, i want you to eat my dick. i am not basing this off of how a pokemon acts in the anime/mangas, only based on dex entries.
i will not be assigning master classes to pokemon, even ones like the creation trio to where it would make sense. if you have an issue with that, leave. there is too little information on the master classes for a basis on analysis.
i would prefer it if you sent one pokemon per ask! it overwhelms me when there are multiple pokemon i have to look for and put in one huge post. there's no limit on sending asks, so go ham! as long as requests are open, i don't mind!
as buggy and shitty as the search function is here on this webbed site, i would severely appreciate it if you at least tried to look up the pokemon you want to send in, because i might have already done it before. i don't want to repeat pokemon!
i believe that is all for rules for now. onto a DNI.
--DNI--
proshippers/anti-antis/neutral on proship discourse. i personally do not identify as an antishipper, but i believe that you probably should not be shipping pedofuckingphilia or incest. even if you call yourself a proshipper and you don't ship that stuff, that still shows you ALIGN with the morals of people who do that, and i personally would like to submit you to a houndoom's fire.
not so much of a dni more than a boundary, but as i am part of a system, i would severely prefer if you did not talk about syscourse in my inbox. i will not disclose if i am pro/anti/neutral on endogenic systems/non-traumagenic systems on this blog. that is personal information and too much to disclose on a blog where i combine pokemon and homestuck of all things.
on this note, however, if you use terms like "narcissist" for someone who doesnt have NPD or use "psychopath" for someone, or any other terms of those likes, you are an ableist asshole, and i want you to eat my fat cock. not just this, if you're just an ableist in general, explode.
TERFs, TEHMs, transmeds, enby-skeptic, and anti-xenogender/neopronoun people? fuck off. i literally am giragender and use neopronouns.
anti mspec-lesbians and anti-mspec gays you can also fuck off. they are not hurting the community, and are not "taking resources away from actual lesbians/gays".
anti aspec people, you as well. ace and aro people are wonderful, and i myself am one of those "nasty people trying to act queer". fuck you.
i believe that is all i can think of for my DNI as well.
if you have any questions not-related to classpecting a pokemon, i will always typically be free to answer!
my talk tag will be "gira used roar!" and anything that's related to classpecting will be "gira's telepathy!"
have a nice day, y'all!

Pokédex Misconceptions: Houndoom
Tumblr media
~Though the Pokédex is a very lovely resource to get kids engaged in science and discovery and help people know what they’re dealing with at a glance, it also perpetuates some very damaging misconceptions about certain species. In this new series, I’ll be writing informative posts hoping to address and correct some of these issues.~
Houndoom is a species which has faced significant stigmatization all across the world, so I found no better Pokémon to kick off this series with. The Pokédex is no exception to this: sadly, it actually keeps many of these ideas alive. Let’s begin.
Houndoom’s Fire
Tumblr media
- Many versions of the Pokédex claim that a burn caused by the flames of a Houndoom will never heal, perpetually remaining fresh and excruciating. While certainly a scary concept, this is not actually the case, and the concept of never-healing Houndoom burns actually originates from a very old Johto legend told to children to discourage them from getting too close to wild packs of Houndoom and Houndour. These stories were told for pretty good reason—though Houndoom fire does not create this sort of permanently agonizing effect, they are able to mix the flames they produce with powerful toxins when they feel highly threatened, and that packs a very nasty punch that some curious kids probably wouldn’t survive. There have been recent cases of adult humans burned by these toxic flames (either because they’re trying to rehabilitate a Houndoom who’s experienced poor treatment from humans in the past, or because they’re just plain dumb and decided it was a good idea to stick their face in a Houndoom’s den when they’ve got puppies), and though it apparently hurts very very badly, the pain does actually go away and the wounds do heal. Keeping this story in the dex not only makes it significantly less credible as a scientific document, but also perpetuates a perception of Houndoom as an inherently dangerous species that should never be partnered with humans.
Mega Houndoom
Tumblr media
- One dex entry in particular has made many trainers massively averse to performing Mega Evolution with their partner Houndoom; using Mega Houndoom’s glowing claws as primary evidence, it claims that the internal temperatures the Pokémon runs in this form are so high it hurts the Houndoom itself. This is a good example of the pitfalls we as humans can encounter when we observe Pokémon: touching incandescent materials would cause us immense pain, so when we observe incandescence on the body of a mammalian Pokémon like Houndoom, we are inclined to assume it must feel pain as well. In reality, there are many fire-type Pokémon who exhibit incandescence—Salandit, Torkoal, and Coalossal, to name a few—and are completely unbothered by it. The same has been observed with multiple Houndoom, who have been observed many times over to exhibit no signs of distress, discomfort, or injury while in their Mega forms. It actually is true that the inner body temperature of a Houndoom does increase fairly substantially when it Mega Evolves, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is a painful experience. Other fire-type Megas, most notably the “X” variant of Mega Charizard (one of which can also be seen in the footage above from the Kalos League a few years back), also have an increased internal body temperature in relation to their normal forms. This is because a change in internal body temperature depending on the activities being performed, the individual’s closeness to evolution, climate, and a slew of other things is a very normal phenomenon for Fire-type Pokémon. It’s well-known that the internal temperature of Flareon can grow very hot—though they can fluff their fur to keep cool, they do so less often when it’s cold outside in order to retain their internal heat. This makes Flareon the perfect cuddle-buddy for wintertime and also demonstrates the ways in which Fire-types can expertly master their heat, and the way that changes depending upon the situation. Mega Houndoom and Mega Charizard X are both in active battle states when they take on this form, meaning they’re getting pumped up, which increases their body temperature already in preparation for movement and fire-breathing. Tack onto this the increased fortitude and firepower they can both achieve in this form, and you’ve got two spicy guys.
Hopefully I was able to clear some things up about this amazing species. Remember to do your research instead of trusting the dex off the bat, and thanks for reading!

The College of Grotesque Arts -- Week Eleven
For new people, I’m doing the Dungeon23 megadungeon project, basing each room on the marginalia of a different page in the 14th-century Luttrell Psalter. Previous entries in this project can be found here.
Still playing catchup, let’s get moving. Starting with this week’s map, which was actually much more of a mess before I made adjustments. Note that the business in the top left there is Room 3.3 poking through from Week Nine. Also, this is one of the places where the passages and intersections that Appendix A generated got nonsensical to the point that I just erased a particularly bad tangle of them and put a room there — that’s why Room 16 is big and kind of lopsided. It's all below the cut:
Tumblr media
Room 3.12: f.48r
I’ve already put a couple Caretakers on this level and I don’t want to overdo it, so unfortunately the grotesque we’ve got here isn’t going to be another one, but I do want you to see this guy because he looks cool as hell:
Tumblr media
Anyway, this is a small room and Appendix A wants there to be a pit in it, so I’m going to make it another latrine. The latrine pit is in the northwest corner, and a fountain stands in the northeast. The pit is clean and empty.
Tumblr media
Just kind of hanging out in this room is a wandering linehund, a bipedal creature with a serpentine neck, a vine-like tail, and a dog’s head. It’s not aggressive, and will flee if attacked, so you probably don’t need stats for it — but if it comes up, here they are. Note that is is Part Plant.
Linehund: CR 1, XP 400; N Small Animal; Init +0; Senses Low-Light Vision; Perception +9
DEFENSE: AC 12, touch 12, flat-footed 11 (+1 size, +1 Dex); hp 13 (2d8+4); Saves Fort +5, Ref +3, Will +0
OFFENSE: Speed 20 ft.; Melee bite +3 (1d4+1)
STATISTICS: Str 12, Dex 12, Con 14, Int 2, Wis 13, Cha 12; Base Atk +1; CMB +1; CMD 12; Feats Skill Focus (Perception); Skills Perception +9 Special Qualities Part Plant
SPECIAL ABILITIES:
Part Plant (Ex): Anything that is Part Plant has a flat 50% chance of ignoring any paralysis, poison, or stun effects. They gain +5 to any save against mind-affecting effects and sleep effects on account of their brain working a little different now. Sneak attacks on something that is Part Plant have a 10% failure chance; the organs aren’t all where they’re supposed to be. They can photosynthesize so long as their leaves are exposed to sun during the daylight hours; this cuts their food requirement in half. Their sleep requirements are also halved. Any magical effects that target plants (e.g. control plants) have a 50% chance of working on them; any effect that does damage to plants does half damage to them. To any spell or effect that checks a creature’s type, they count as a plant in addition to their original creature type.
Room 3.13: f.48v
Changed the layout of this part of the map pretty substantially because 3.13 was a small room in the middle of a nonsensical intersection, and there are two goofy-looking critters on this page, so I wanted space for them. The room in general is unremarkable, its only real features being a few pillars and the to-be-expected ruins of furniture. The walls and floor, however, are notably worn and damaged, with numerous holes and niches spread throughout. Both of the critters placed in this room have escaped the dungeon at one point or another and set up breeding populations outside, because I like them and want them to be more places.
Tumblr media
Some of those wall niches are inhabited by nesting lizard-doves. These awkward creatures look like someone tried to make a dragon out of a pigeon — they’re birds with scales, lizard-like tails, and bat-like wings. They behave more or less like usual birds, and if you need stats for them, just get stats for a regular bird of some kind, give it +1 natural armor, and make it a clumsier flier.
Tumblr media
Running around the room and into the various holes in the wall and floor are crepgearns: small, thin, stretched-out creatures that are all head, legs, and tail. They’re skittish beaſts, their only natural defenses being their speed and a weak acidic secretion they use to slowly burrow into stone.
Crepgearn: CR 1, XP 400; N Diminutive Animal; Init +5; Senses Low-Light Vision; Perception +1
DEFENSE: AC 19, touch 19, flat-footed 14 (+4 size, +5 Dex); hp 7 (2d8-2); Saves Fort +2, Ref +8, Will +1
OFFENSE: Speed 40 ft., burrow 10 ft.; Melee tail lash +1 (1d2-4 plus 1 acid); Space 2-1/2 ft.; Reach 2-1/2 ft.; Special Attacks Acid
STATISTICS: Str 2, Dex 20, Con 7, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 10; Base Atk +1; CMB -7; CMD 8; Feats Run; Skills Stealth +8
SPECIAL ABILITIES:
Acid (Ex): A Crepgearn's tail lash attacks are coated in acid, causing an additional 1 acid damage with each attack.
Room 3.14: f.49r
This large, square room is generally unremarkable, featuring the familiar pillars and rotting wooden accoutrements of the rest of the dungeon.
Tumblr media
Inhabiting this room, however, are a small family of crested birdhounds, which are what they sound like. They have the body of a dog, the head of a bird, blue fur, and a golden crest on their head. They are, however, potentially a serious threat: they’re the results of an experiment to create animals with inherent mental powers. Whether they’re a threat to the PCs actually depends entirely on how the PCs have been behaving as they move through the dungeon — they are aware of the general activity in their area beyond what their mundane senses would suggest. If the PCs have been unnecessarily violent in their dealings with the dungeon fauna, they will probably be walking into a surprisingly well-coordinated ambush when they enter this room. If the birdhounds don’t have any reason to think the PCs are a danger to them, then they won’t be aggressive towards them either. You’ll have to decide how many there are based on your party and their situation — there should be at least one adult and a few juveniles, but you can make the juveniles noncombatants to keep the threat level manageable.
Despite their alarming psychic prowess, birdhounds aren’t that much smarter than normal animals. They primarily think in concepts rather than words — the PCs may discover this, as the birdhounds are capable of telepathic communication, but the players will have to initiate any attempts at communication to get the birdhounds to “talk” to them rather than just to each other.
Note that the following stats are making the assumption that you’re not using any psionics rules, because, like, who does? If you are including psionics in your game, you’ll probably want to make some adjustments to make these creatures properly psionic.
Crested Birdhound: CR 6, XP 2400; N Tiny Magical Beast; Init +3; Senses Low-Light Vision, Darkvision 60ft, True Seeing, Total Awareness; Perception +8
DEFENSE: AC 16, touch 15, flat-footed 13 (+2 size, +3 Dex, +1 natural); hp 52 (8d10+8); Saves Fort +7, Ref +9, Will +4; Immunities Mind-Affecting, Sneak Attack (see Total Awareness)
OFFENSE: Speed 20 ft.; Melee bite +11 (1d3+1); Space 2-1/2 ft.; Reach 2-1/2 ft.; Special Attacks Dominating Gaze
Spell-Like Abilities (CL 8; DC 16 + spell level):
At Will — Clairaudience/Clairvoyance, Touch of Idiocy
3/day — Scrying, Hypnotic Pattern
1/day —  Confusion
STATISTICS: Str 12, Dex 16, Con 12, Int 5, Wis 14, Cha 22; Base Atk +8; CMB +7; CMD 20 (24 vs. trip); Special Qualities Magical Beast Traits, Envisaging, Total Awareness
SPECIAL ABILITIES:
Dominating Gaze (Su): An opponent that meets a Crested Birdhound's gaze within 15ft. becomes dominated (as dominate person) for 1 day unless they succeed at a DC 20 will save. A successful saving throw negates the effect. Each opponent within range of a gaze attack must attempt a saving throw each round at the beginning of his or her turn in the initiative order.
Envisaging (Su): A Crested Birdhound can communicate wordlessly through thoughts.  A Crested Birdhound can read the thoughts of creatures around it and projects its thoughts into the target in reply. They emit a psychic, wordless flash of their intended message to the target's mind, functioning as a wordless form of telepathy.  A Crested Birdhound cannot read the thoughts of a creature immune to mind-affecting effects.
Total Awareness (Su): A Crested Birdhound can effectively “see” in all directions and is telepathically aware of all living things in its immediate vicinity. As a result, it cannot be effectively flanked, sneak attacked, or hidden from.
Tumblr media
Hidden under the ruined furniture in one corner of the room is an enchanted falchion — go ahead and just use the random magic item tables to determine what enchantment it has. This formerly belonged to a previous explorer who died somewhere in the dungeon; the birdhounds have stashed it for future use in negotiating with adventurers. They may give it to the PCs willingly if there is some sort of productive diplomatic contact and/or if the PCs have something to offer them.
Room 3.15: f.49v
This is another one of those “extraplanar entity holding cell” rooms that we’ve seen a couple of times before. (Rooms 1.5 and 2.21, if you want to refer to them.) The control panel, heavily damaged and requiring extensive specialized repair like the others, is on the north wall.
Tumblr media
The repairs will be complicated by the fact that there are weasels nesting in the workings of the control panel, so the delicate instrumentation is extra destroyed. The weasels prey on the small songbirds that also inhabit this room. Anyway, on to the room’s main event.
When I got to this page, I have to tell you, I saw the following image and immediately thought of my throwaway suggestion regarding an iron flask back in Martius’s Bolthole…
Tumblr media
So yeah, the stasis field in this room holds a friggin’ angel. (I’m pretty sure that’s supposed to be an unrolled scroll in its hands, by the way, not, like, a giant rib or something. It’s also, going by context of the surrounding pages, probably not a generic angel but in fact a symbolic representation of Matthew, the one that has a book of the Bible named after him. None of that is important here.) I’m not going to go in depth about what the angel’s deal is, because I feel like “how do angels?” is a pretty variable situation, setting to setting. As is the matter of what categories angels are sorted into and what their stats are like. (I’m not getting any more specific than “angel”; pick a stat block yourself. Probably not one of the giant boss-angels with an epic CR.) So this angel acts exactly how angels in your setting would be expected to act. If you don’t have an answer for that… okay, we’re going to do a subsection.
How Do Angels?
Some basic questions to ponder in deciding how to work angels into worldbuilding:
Are all angels tied to specific gods, or do some/all of them operate independently of such divine politics?
Related to the above, are angels all good-aligned? For that matter, are they all on the same page about what being Good means? If angels are tied to specific gods, there’s definitely going to be some variation.
Is there a celestial bureaucracy? If so, how is it organized (or disorganized)?
To what degree, if any, do angels have free will or a sense of self?
What sorts of tasks do angels generally perform?
Depending on how you answer those questions, the angel’s response to being freed could be any of the following or anywhere in between:
“I AM GRATEFUL FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE, MORTAL; WHAT BOON DO YOU ASK OF ME”
“IT IS GOOD AND RIGHT THAT YOU HAVE DONE THIS; NOW I WILL DEPART”
[doesn’t acknowledge you at all; leaves]
[immediately smites any morally-questionable members of the party without explanation; leaves]
There are also additional questions that will need to be answered about this specific angel once you’ve sorted out the generalities. I’m going to go ahead and do the brainstorming-questions thing again because, again, a lot of this depends on how your game handles angels.
Does the relevant god or celestial bureaucracy or whatever know that this angel is here?
If they do know, why haven’t they retrieved it?
If they don’t know, why not?
Related to the above, do they not know in the sense that they don’t know this is where the missing angel is or do they not know the angel is missing at all?
Something to take into account: while we haven’t really established the class levels that these wizards were working with, the answer is definitely friggin’ high. With all twelve working together and properly leveraging their resources, they probably could have not only stood up to an angry god, but won a straight-up fight with one. So there’s a reason why this wouldn’t have just been responded to with a summary smiting.
Anyway, I’m supposed to be doing at least some of this work for you, so here are my suggestions for some scenarios:
The angel was yoinked from a battlefield. One of those huge angels-and-devils, fate-of-the-cosmos-on-the-line things that are generally outside of mortal awareness. Due to the chaos of the situation, none of the survivors were really aware of what happened, so the celestial bureaucracy has had this angel marked as whatever their equivalent of “missing, presumed dead” is for the past several centuries. Turning up alive might cause some unexpected ripples and a possible delayed retribution of some sort — two of the wizards are doing the post-mortal interplanar thing, as you may recall. In fact, Septembria’s part of the power structure of the Nine Hells now, so this may be a spark for another big angel-devil battle.
For whatever reason, this particular angel wasn’t in the orbit of any notable god or celestial organization. Their disappearance was noted, but nobody with the kind of power to do anything about it was invested enough to get involved. Someone will probably take positive notice if you let it back out, though.
This angel and whatever god/organization it worked for are hardcore Lawful Good, inflexible in the way only celestial beings can be. They know the angel is here and want it back, but for whatever reason it’s Against the Rules to intervene. So they just… haven’t. Assigning one of the faithful to this mission will be on the agenda the next time they have a high-level paladin working for them in this part of the multiverse. (Or maybe it was on the agenda pretty recently, and a high-level paladin with no sense of humor or tolerance for moral ambiguity is heading towards this spot right now.)
You’ve never even heard of the god this angel works for. Turns out they don’t have any worshipers on this particular material plane, which means they don’t really have access to it or power over it. They’d definitely owe you a boon if you freed their angel, but again, no power here. All they can do is pass on a message saying that next time you’re in [place you’ve never heard of], toss them a prayer and they’ll hook you up.
You’ve never heard of the god this angel works for for a different reason — they’re dead. They could have freed the angel, and in fact were planning to: they didn’t quite have the juice to risk a straight-up smiting of the College, but they put a number of Events in Motion that accelerated its collapse. But then one of those big cosmic emergencies came up, and in all the fuss, freeing the angel was put off for later — and then there was no later, because that cosmic emergency turned out to be the god-killing kind. Hey, what even happens to an angel that serves a dead god? Might want to crack open that stasis field and find out.
The angel was on some kind of solitary, long-term assignment and nobody has noticed it’s missing because it’s only expected to check in once a millennium or so. “IT’S A VITAL POSITION, THOUGH, YOU HAVE TO HAVE SOMEONE DOING IT OR YOU RISK SERIOUS COSMIC UPSET; GOOD THING YOU GOT ME OUT OF THE BOX SO QUICKLY. WAIT, DID YOU SAY ‘TEMPORAL STASIS’? IT’S BEEN HOW LONG? ARE YOU SURE? OH. OH NO.” Seconds later, waiting for your sight to return after the angel disappeared in a blinding flash of light, you think to yourself that you hadn’t been aware angels even could look panicked.
Angels have no free will, sense of self, or individuality. They are expendable and replaceable. When this one went missing, they just made a new one. The celestial bureaucracy did lay some divine curses on the College of Grotesque Arts as a punishment, though, which probably contributed to its downfall.
Any combination of the above.
That’s probably enough angelology for now.
Room 3.16: f.50r
This room is another large artificial swamp. Walkways suspended a few feet over the water allow access, and several pillars support the high ceiling. A few notable beaſts inhabit the swamp.
Tumblr media
Swimming through the water are a number of earfish. These foot-long piscine creatures are equipped with a trifurcated tentacle-like tail and a beak, but their most prominent features are the bright red ears that simply do not look like they belong on their head. Earfish will attempt to eat anyone who falls into the water, grabbing them with their tails and nibbling at them. PCs who are being attacked in this way are at serious risk of being drowned.
Earfish: CR 3, XP 800; N Tiny Animal; Init +2; Senses Low-Light Vision; Perception +11
DEFENSE: AC 19, touch 14, flat-footed 17 (+2 size, +2 Dex, +5 natural); hp 23 (5d8+0); Saves Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +1
OFFENSE: Speed swim 20 ft.; Melee tail lash +6 (1d4+1) , bite +1 (1d6+1); Space 2-1/2 ft.; Reach 2-1/2 ft.; Special Attacks Grab (tail lash)
STATISTICS: Str 12, Dex 15, Con 10, Int 2, Wis 10, Cha 10; Base Atk +3; CMB +2 (+6 grapple); CMD 14; Feats Improved Grapple, Improved Natural Attack (bite), Skill Focus (Perception); Skills Perception +11
SPECIAL ABILITIES:
Grab (Ex): If a Earfish hits with its tail lash attack, it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. Grab can only be used against targets of a size Tiny or smaller. Creatures with grab receive a +4 bonus on combat maneuver checks made to start and maintain a grapple.
Tumblr media
Another danger to those who enter the water are corworms. These small, purplish creatures drain blood like leeches, but are able to operate in a coordinated school. Much like leeches, they have a medicinal application: a corworm’s bite is able to selectively remove poison from the body. This is a magical ability — the poison is selectively drawn to the wound and extracted in a way not really possible through mundane abilities — that can be used once per day and functions as neutralize poison. It’s an autonomic response; the cor-worm uses this ability every time it feeds, and isn’t really aware of it. (It’s only once a day because after using it the cor-worm is full and cannot be induced to bite again.) This medicinal usage is probably not much of a comfort to the PC currently being swarmed, however.
Corworm Swarm: CR 5, XP 1600; N Diminutive Vermin (Swarm); Init +5; Senses Darkvision 60ft, Blindsight 30ft; Perception +0
DEFENSE: AC 20, touch 19, flat-footed 15 (+4 size, +5 Dex, +1 natural); hp 39 (7d8+7) Saves Fort +6, Ref +7, Will +2; Defensive Abilities Swarming Mass; Immunities Critical Hit, Flanking, Weapon Damage, Poison
OFFENSE: Speed swim 10 ft.; Melee Swarm (1d2 Con + bleed)
STATISTICS: Str 8, Dex 20, Con 12, Int 0, Wis 10, Cha 1; Base Atk +5; CMB +0; CMD 15
SPECIAL ABILITIES
Drain Poison (Su): An individual Corworm’s bite has medicinal properties, draining all poisons out of the person bitten. This functions as the spell neutralize poison. A Corworm can only be induced to bite once per day.
Swarm Attack (Ex): A Corworm Swarm deals 1d2 automatic Constitution damage to any creature whose space it occupies at the end of its move, with no attack roll needed.  Swarm attacks are not subject to a miss chance from concealment or cover. Wounds caused by a Corworm Swarm continue to bleed, dealing 1d2 damage each round at the start of the affected creature's turn.  This bleeding can be stopped by a successful DC 15 Heal skill check or through the application of any magical healing.
Swarming Mass (Ex): A Corworm Swarm's body is composed of a swarming mass of smaller creatures, which means it has no front or back and no discernable anatomy, so it is not subject to critical hits or flanking.  A swarm made up of tiny creatures takes half damage from slashing and piercing weapons.  A swarm composed of Fine or Diminutive creatures is immune to all weapon damage.  Reducing a swarm to 0 hit points or less causes it to break up, though damage taken until that point does not degrade its ability to attack or resist damage. Swarms are never staggered or reduced to a dying state by damage.  Also, they cannot be tripped, grappled, or bull rushed, and they cannot grapple an opponent. A swarm is immune to any spell or effect that targets a specific number of creatures (including single-target spells such as disintegrate), with the exception of mind-affecting effects if the swarm has an Intelligence score and a hive mind.  A swarm takes half again as much damage (+50%) from spells or effects that affect an area, such as splash weapons and many evocation spells.Swarms made up of Diminutive or Fine creatures are susceptible to high winds, such as those created by a gust of wind spell.  For purposes of determining the effects of wind on a swarm, treat the swarm as a creature of the same size as its constituent creatures.  A swarm rendered unconscious by means of nonlethal damage becomes disorganized and dispersed, and does not reform until its hit points exceed its nonlethal damage. Swarms do not threaten foes and do not make attacks of opportunity.  A swarm has 0ft reach, like its component creatures.  When a swarm moves into a creature's space to attack, it provokes an attack of opportunity as normal.
Tumblr media
There are also birds. Normal ones.
As something either to reward your players for surviving after getting into the water or to entice them to get in in the first place, there are the remains of another previous explorer sunk in the mud, complete with magic items and a large bag of silver coins. Randomly generate gear as usual — this one is Pavia, a bard.
Room 3.17: f.50v
The northeast door into this room is intact, and appears to be made of brass bars. The other two doors are damaged or missing, but the remnants indicate that they were much the same. They’re somewhat reminiscent of the doors to some kind of giant birdcage, because that’s what this is. This room is a tall cylindrical construction with a domed top and oversized perches breaking up the vertical space.
Tumblr media
It’s inhabited by giant pigeons, which are what they sound like: pigeons the size of human beings. Whether they are aggressive or chill is up to you, based on whether you feel like your players are having too easy a time of it or deserve a break. Stats if you want them:
Giant Pigeon: CR 2, XP 600; N Medium Animal; Init +2; Senses Low-Light Vision; Perception +8
DEFENSE: AC 14, touch 12, flat-footed 12 (+2 Dex, +2 natural); hp 17 (3d8+3) Saves Fort +4, Ref +5, Will +3
OFFENSE: Speed 20 ft., fly 80 ft.; Melee 2 claws +4 (1d4+0) , bite -1 (1d6+0)
STATISTICS: Str 10, Dex 14, Con 12, Int 2, Wis 15, Cha 10; Base Atk +2; CMB +2; CMD 14; Feats Weapon Finesse, Wingover; Skills Fly +8, Perception +8; Racial Modifiers Perception +6
Room 3.18: f.51r
This room, though not quite as stylized as room 3.17, is also a sort of large birdcage: the ceiling is high, and an impressive array of artificial perches criss-cross through the space above.
Tumblr media
Unlike 3.17, all the birds in this room are normal-sized, though there are a lot of them and they represent a variety of species. Robins, parrots, ravens, and jays all inhabit this room. (I had to do some Googling to figure out what that one with the acorn is, because I grew up in the eastern US where jays are bright blue; I’m pretty confident calling this one a jay now, though.) Those of the birds that are prone to mimicry intersperse their usual calls with what seem to be their attempts at mimicking shouts and sounds of battle.
There’s a secret door in the eastern wall, made to look like part of the stone. It was originally meant to open with a vocal trigger that was cool until you thought about it for more than a minute: the word Martius spoken by a trained bird. (I’m sure you can see why that’s not particularly secure — though it can’t be opened normally now, because Martius has been dead for a long, long time and none of the birds know his name anymore.) Investigation of the door will indicate that someone has broken into it previously, so forcing the door is less challenging than it might be otherwise. On the other side of the door is a scene that’s been reprised many times, which adventurers and gamers may describe, based on their temperament, as “iconic”, “derivative”, “standard”, “stereotypical”, or “suspicious”: a ten-by-ten room with a large treasure chest in the center. (The treasure chest is a few feet on a side and quite heavy.)
Of course it’s trapped. Obviously it’s trapped. Opening the lid of the chest (or moving it from the spot where it sits) triggers two spell effects, which you may treat as separate traps if you wish.
First, hold portal is cast on the door. (If the door is open, it closes. Depending on your interpretation of hold portal, this may be a separate effect.)
Second, confusion is cast centered on the chest. Will save DC 20. Caster level also 20, so it lasts twenty rounds. Note that confusion has a 15-foot radius, so anyone standing too near the other side of the door is also going to be affected, as are a few of the birds if they’re positioned right.
Tumblr media
If you want to make this more of a challenge — e.g. if the majority of the party made their saves or stayed clear of the room — after one or two rounds you may have up to six incorporeal undead of your choice rise through the floor and begin attacking the PCs. (Call this a third spell effect attached to the chest — control undead maybe.)
Assuming the PCs are still interested after the combat (and survive): inside the chest are a large quantity of old-fashioned electrum coins, of the type that fell out of use shortly after this place was originally built. If PCs investigate very closely, they may find that the chest is situated on top of a locked trapdoor in the floor. (The trapdoor is not very well hidden once the chest is no longer on top of it — it’s stone, cut so it more or less blends with the floor, and the keyhole is a bit subtle, but it’s mostly relying on nobody thinking to look under the chest. It barely counts as a secret door, really.) The trapdoor covers a pit that’s only a few feet wide, but about thirty feet deep. At the bottom is a tangle of bones, armor, and various trinkets: these are the remains of six previous adventurers who fell victim to the confusion trap, tossed into this space under the floor by an automatic clean-up enchantment that sweeps the room every so often.
That’s where the undead I mentioned a couple paragraphs before came from; you may, if you want, have them come into play only when the trapdoor is opened or their remains are disturbed. (Or split the difference, introducing some of them earlier and others now.)
For purposes of generating loot and preparing for any communication (either via speak with dead or if you decided to make some of the undead intelligent), here are names and classes. There are three fighters (Innorus, Gunilda, and Rochulf), two clerics (Letewaria and Thomas), and a rogue (Phillipa). They should be around the same level as the PCs, with some variation above and below.
And there’s Week Eleven. Let’s see how long I can keep this catch-up rate going.

And since Dusk became her own thing, I decided the new Pokepasta Sona would look more like.. me.
She was kidnapped, knocked out, was technically dead for a few moments while the kidnapper sewed parts from her grandfathers Espeon and Umbreon.. and then she escaped.
She was not aware that her Pokemon behaviors were not human behaviors, due to having an identity crisis within her head. She would eventually remember her strife, but instead of wanting revenge, she wanted to move on. After all, her grandfather already avenged her 'death'.
Funfacts are below! 18+ ones are under Read More, in case no one wants to read them.
-She is unaware of any Pokemon beyond the Hoenn dex, unless they are Bonsly and Munchlax.
-She knows the following moves: Hypnosis, Return, Crunch, and Toxic. The only reason she could poison people with her fangs is most likely based on Umbreon's dex entries. Absolutely no one is sure how she even learnt Hypnosis.
-Her ability is Synchronize, which both mon's had. If she dislikes the person who's bossing her around, she instead passes on the status ailment she has to her Trainer.
-She can read her fellow Trainers minds, which allows her to anticipate attacks or commands. It helps that Insomnia!Silver normally cannot talk so she's forced to read his mind to know what he wants to say.
-She can see ghosts.. actually, that's a thing she could do even before she was experimented on. Hence why she sees Mike and lays on his lap or chest a lot.
-Due to being half-Pokemon now, she can understand and talk to other Pokemon. She tends to converse with them whenever she is their teammate. Seems to get along with Miki because of this ability.
-She will often act like a cat. Loafing on beds, blepping, sometimes using her psychic powers to pull her fellow Trainers near her to cuddle.. Oh and apparently she has poisonous bites that she can use to force people to cuddle with her longer.
-She has severe abandonment issues, partially due to being left at home for long periods of time. It isn't her grandfathers fault though, sometimes he has to go do something elsewhere.
-She can and will talk about Orre to anyone that asks! She gets excited when people want her to rouse them with a story of her grandfathers adventure!
-Her current OT is marked as Blake. Red wanted to have her, but she growled when he tried to separate her from Blake.
-She's also considered as a team member to Steven (even though he rarely uses her), Gray (who needs to learn how to fight with a Pokemon), Insomnia!Silver (because she has Hypnosis as a move), Glitchy Red (he just likes being around her), and Wally (because she's a pretty good friend of his).
-Dawn also uses her sometimes, but she always needs to be reminded that Ann only knows about things from Gens 1-3.
(18+) -Her heat cycles can get very bad. It's to the point that she actively avoids the others because she does not want to forcefully breed with them. One day she will be able to breed.. one day...
(18+) -She.. has a dick. That's because Umbreon was a male and it just sort of.. happened. She was incredibly flustered when she learnt about that fact.
(18+) -Out of instinct, if she were to ever breed with someone, she'd fuck them doggy style. That's uh.. probably because both her other halves are kinda like dogs (more like foxes, but you know). Also tends to bite the person she breeds with to show that the person is theirs alone.

I have yet to mention any of our Guests. I apologise, but they only recently came here, and I needed to make sure they were willing to let me share their stories.
We currently have three Guests staying with us - a pair of Duosion and a Luxio. The Duosion will probably be long-term Guests, about six months to possibly a year, while the Luxio will hopefully be a short-term Guest, a few weeks, maybe two months.
Tumblr media
I'll start with the two Duosion. They came from two different trainers, and met in one of Nimbasa City's care homes, and have stuck together since - we think the psychic energies they give off are comfortable to each other and calm them.
Their reasons for being in foster care are sadly common for their kind. Upon evolving from Solosis, Duosion have two divided brains, which think independently. This results in a significant boost in their psychic powers, but also make their personalities and behaviour somewhat erratic and random. This can make them difficult to care for and train, especially for inexperienced Trainers, to the point where said Trainers give up because they don't consider it worth the hassle. It can get so bad that Pokedex entries reference their two brains to try and warn people, with the Galarian 'dex also warning about their unpredictability.
Thankfully, this duo are relatively calm, and can usually be found following the Twins about and playing with them.

The Luxio is one of our rarer cases, in that she is actually a wild Pokemon. She was found wandering about Driftveil City injured, and got brought into the Pokecenter. Since there are virtually no Luxio in Unova, it is believed she came in on one of the boats. They treated her, and then had her transferred to Mistralton City for monitoring. She was healing fine, but she was grumpy and snappish. The Rangers there concluded that being wild meant she was uncomfortable with the presence of the city, and so wanted her moved to a more rural location, and since Luxio are second-stage Pokemon and one of the Rangers knew of me, I was one of those contacted for the possibility of having her here in Anville.
She is certainly better here, less grumpy and more aloof, in a 'I will do this only if I want to' manner, and maintains some distance from the rest of us outside of meals. We hope to keep her content until she is either adopted, or returned to a region where Luxio and their line are more commonplace.

If you haven't already could you do a review on the zebstrika line?
Tumblr media
I do like like this line. One could argue that zebra + electric is almost too straightforward for its own good, but honestly, it's kind of nice to get a simple concept that's nicely designed every now and again. The visuals still give the line enough of a distinction as to not look too much like regular zebras, and the designs are very well-balanced.
With that said, however, I don't really care for Blitzle that much. It's not really that anything is objectively all that wrong with it (save for one or two minor things that I'll get into in a moment), but it's one of those pre-evos that's just a lesser form of the evolution. Ideally, a pre-evo (and middle evos, who suffer from this kind of thing more often) should have something that differentiates them from the rest of the line, such as:
A design that changes many elements and looks visually distinct from the rest of the line while still working as a whole
Progression or emphasis of the theme
If not visually distinct, some kind of 'dex entry or lore that helps to differentiate it
Or any combo of the three. Blitzle is just lesser Zebstrika; it adds nothing other than being the obligatory pre-evo.
It's a little hard to think of what to do with the design because the line is so straightforward, but one thing I could picture is that the colors inverse; Blitzle is white with black stripes while Zebstrika remains black with white stripes. It would be an easy way to visually differentiate the two and would be a fun way to play around with the zebra concept a bit.
But anyway, looking at it as-is, the only thing that bugs me about the design is the head and face shape. It has this weird generic animal head, rather than something more ungulate-like like Zebstrika. I'm all for mixing and matching animal anatomy, but this is so vaguely shaped that it just always felt off to me.
Also, compared to Zebstrika, the markings aren't as good. The three on the body feel fairly tacked-on comparatively. Speaking of which...
Tumblr media
Zebstrika is considerably better than Blitzle, mostly because not only has the head shape been improved considerably, but the stripes have as well. I just love how carefully they're placed; two on the chest that draw the eye downward, a few to extablish a pattern on the legs, the way the second chest stripe wraps perfectly around the upper leg... basically, there was a lot of thought put into this, despite the otherwise simple-looking design.
One other thing about this line that I like is that the animations show that their manes and stripes light up in yellow, like lightning across a night sky. This looks really, really cool, and really adds something to the line.
Tumblr media
I also like the little pops of color with the blue and the yellow. I do question the inner ear being blue--not that I mind a little more blue in the design, but just because it's a strange place to put it. I can't help but feel like the mane could've been edged with blue stripes, or maybe the tail tip is blue. That's mostly nitpicking, however.
As a final note: this line is fairly forgotten (probably in part because of how straightforward it is, conceptually), so I feel like it would be a good pick for another form or something. If we ever get a region based on Africa, I could easily see a regional that's the "original" Blitzle that this line branched off from. A mega or mega-ish form also wouldn't be bad, though I don't know how much it would add.
Anyway, as a whole: a straightfoward line conceptually, but a nicely-designed one, even if Blitzle is too similar to its evolution to stand out.

remind me to go into worldbuilding later cause i realized i haven't posted any of it and it's likely gonna be. pertinent. information... mostly has to do with "placing regions roughly where their real world equivalents are" and "sinnoh probably has a fair amount of pokérussians in it but it is not itself pokérussia in my idea of the pokéuniverse, pokérussia is called ruzari"... i have nothing in the way of Fully Developed fanregions but i do have two named concept regions (ruzari is one of them, sanrin is the other) i will probably reference, if not here then DEFINITELY when i get around to making an oc multimuse

Hello there.. My name is Ranny and I saw Pokemon matchups are open.
I read somewhere among your posts that Ghost types could be good for little exposure to the outside? I could be mistaken, but I'll leave it to the expert.
I feel I'm quite.. difficult.. to matchup with and I can't think of something myself, I don't want to hinder any Pokemon's growth with my circumstances.. which I should probably explain? I guess I don't need to go into too much detail but I have a lot of anxiety and depression, social anxieties and ptsd (very reactive to things moving too fast above me). I have fluctuating agoraphobia also, when at a severe level being too close to windows and doors will trigger panic attacks.. I have mobility issues down to Fibromyalgia, communication and management difficulties due to Autism, and I have a hard time concentrating or get lost in hyperfocussing down to ADHD..
I'm very introverted, an INFJ personality, but I do get lonely, very lonely. My depression pretty much has me feeling low more often than not but also pretty hopeless in finding a Pokemon friend, partner, companion, or anything that won't ultimately become hindered by my existence..
Any shred of hope I have of finding someone, even if just the right direction toward one, has been poured into this.. But ultimately, please don't feel too bad if you can't think of any or don't have any available.
I have seen many specialists for my mental and physical health too, it's a painfully slow process, I just thought some company might help the journey perhaps..
Fingers crossed, huh?
Many kind regards, Ranny
The right thing you did here was explain. I’m able to give you a far more accurate suggestion because of that, so thank you for being honest about what you need a Pokemon for, aside from good company.
You’re not wrong, finding a Pokemon must have been hard for you, no one individual Pokemon could cover all the bases. That being said, a group of three low impact species could indeed help you here.
Because your situation is so specific, there’s a little less wiggle room on what you could get away with keeping, but for sure you have some choices.
So first off, emotional help, shuppet. A Pokemon happy to be indoors, often willing to help those who show them love. They’ll help regulate the moods, keep you calmer, happier, and overall more freed up to handle other things. The feelings of anxiety and depression are exhausting, You know that, but without that constant background noise of it all, you’ll have a lot more energy and opportunity to enjoy more things. In serious cases, even two shuppet would help, so talk to your doctor and also the pokecentres near you about this. This of course can be done over the phone or online, if it suits you better. Shuppet are underrated, and have high populations in the wild, I don’t know why folks overlook them, perhaps the dex entries around the species spook them. Either way, can’t suggest better than them.
Second up, indoor happy psychic types. The psychic lines are adept at aiding day to day, if you hurt and can’t reach something, or you feel tired and can’t get up to deal with going to the bathroom or something, they’re more than capable of using telekinetic powers to assist your movements, even in the bad days. Some are fully able to learn how to help regulate moods too, predicting panic attacks for their trainers, using various methods to help you before things get too stressful, or even dangerous. They also regulate brain waves, so your autism may feel a little easier to manage the longer you spend with a psychic partner. It’s proven most psychic types will do this automatically, to aid their human family day to day.
My top psychic pokemon picks for you:
solosis - a Pokemon that can and does exist in the vacuum of space, they don’t require food like average Pokemon, and have a very upbeat outlook on things more often than not, thrive indoors, so long as they get enrichment and company.
Espurr - correctly trained these Pokemon can also double up as a really good buddy for those who feel calmer when petting or brushing fur. They can be great loving companions, but also are notoriously happy entertaining themselves should you be busy, and find the life of an indoor Pokemon quite agreeable sometimes.
If I was in your position, and I felt like I could afford and handle three, I would get all three Pokemon I suggested. This gives them days off, time to relax, and breaks from the duties of a support Pokemon. Everything needs time out, so having a care rotor will allow them to plan for time out, to do things they enjoy too.
You’ll have to take this list to your local adoption centre, or even lab/professor, and they will help to put you on a waiting list for the correct species you decide upon in the end. You can’t just go and catch one from the wild in this case, these Pokemon all need very intense and specific lessons to help them be the best aids to you. The facility that eventually helps you find a set of partners will then try to match your personality to those of the support Pokemon then have ready to be rehomed. Get ready for a few visits to the facilities, to meet potential matches, but it’s well worth it. The company and love Pokemon give us is proven to aid in mood, and wellbeing. I think it’d really do you well to take at least a shuppet on.
Be aware, when possible it’s still nice for these Pokemon to go outside, even if you don’t. If you have access to a yard, or a shared garden, try to let them have time in the sun when possible if they are interested. Socialising them is also advised, even if only with friends and family’s Pokemon, send them with trusted individuals to the shops, just to take a break from the house, you know, normal junk like that.
The facility that will eventually assign you a partner will make sure to pick individuals who suit your lifestyle as best as possible, so you shouldn’t end up with a partner who isn’t ok with the conditions you’ve set out.
Do not lose hope, there’s a combo out there for everyone, and I think this set is a good one for you from what you’ve told me. Hopefully you can move forward and make some neat friends!

So the mega energy is for mega evolutions—they make your pokémon stronger (and have their own ‘dex entries) for 8(?) hours I think. It’s for a while. You can only have one going at a time and you have to do mega raids featuring that pokémon to get mega energy for it. Mega raids tend to be fairly difficult, but you get more rewards for doing them faster.
Team Rocket grunts sometimes take over pokéstops, so you can battle them and take one of their pokémon when you win. Which one is randomized, but in my experience, it tends to be one of the first two. Catching shadow pokémon is a frequent task in quests these days. As is purifying shadow pokémon. This can get you a 100% IV pokémon if it’s already close. It does take a chunk of stardust to do, but if you’re catching stuff and not really powering your catches up too much, you’ll probably be okay to do this. I’ve seen arguments against purifying pokémon—allegedly the shadow ones are stronger—so keep that in mind, I guess. 😅
Other than that, I don’t think a whole lot has changed. If you have questions, hmu. If I don’t know I can look it up.
Thanks! I've battled a few Team Rocket grunts and have a few shadow pokemon, but idk if I should be purifying them or not. I pretty much haven't been, but that's because they look cool lol I think they had just added the Team Rocket thing when I stopped playing? I played mostly back in like 2018/beginning 2019 with the kidlet I babysat (we'd walk around his neighborhood and catch pokemon) It was mostly the mega evolutions thing that was confusing me, I think? That and the new pokemon, but I'll get used to them

{This isn’t going to be easy for me to write.
First off, Worldbuilding Month. It’s just really difficult to sit down and write pure worldbuilding posts these days. They’re taking a lot more research, a lot more words, and a lot more thought than I’d originally thought they would, and although I try not to notice note counts, I can tell folks aren’t super interested in reading walls of text. There are a handful of topics I wanted to cover—religion and culture are the ones I can think of off the top of my head—but honestly? I just ... don’t think I will.
So there’s that, but there’s also something you probably know about if you’re on the Discord. (P.S. There’s a Discord in the blog desc. It’s for Pokémon fans/fan creatives, so feel free to swing by and hang out, if you’d like. There’s also a channel for this blog in particular, if you want to discuss. /shilling)
But basically, it’s like this.
Around the new year, something happened that made things just ... hard. I’ve had a complicated relationship with the fandom for the past few years, but what happened around the beginning of the month made it hard to want to talk to Pokémon fans again. I’d say it was because yet again, somebody in a Pokémon community made it clear that they only saw me as a content machine instead of a human being, hurt me, and got real defensive when called out on it (because that’s what happened), but that’s honestly happened so many times in the years that I’ve been in this fandom that that’s not what’s made it hard to come back.
What’s made it hard to come back is the fact that I’ve started writing original fic. I’ve found communities of original fic authors who treat me like a person. And in all, in the process of really establishing myself in that other community, I’ve looked at what I was doing in fandom and asked myself two important questions:
1. Am I having fun?
2. Is this what I want to do with my life?
And the answer to both is ... no. I’m burned out on fandom. I could go into why, but there’s just so much there. Sometimes, I think back to when I joined the fandom, ages and ages ago, when there was so much magic and creativity in these grassroots webpages out there (yes, I’m old—surprise), but nowadays, it just feels like everyone’s running a competition with each other or that there’s an argument everywhere you turn or that everyone is just one wrong comment away from blowing up at you or shutting you out. (And we’re fighting over magic pets that don’t exist, not, like, politics, yet we’re fighting with the same level of anger sometimes.) Granted, I also understand that every fandom is like this on some level. But the difference was that I wasn’t as tied to those other fandoms as I was with this one.
And therein lies the problem. I’ve spent years in this fandom—certainly a lot of my adulthood—and I’ve come to realize just how much of my life that actually was. This past November, I started writing original fiction with actual dedication, and I found writers (of original fiction) who treat me well, are happy to see me, acknowledge me as a human being, and overall support me, and for the first time in a long while, I felt happy creating something. Oh, don’t get me wrong. I wanted to write Powerverse and that one fanfiction I write outside of this blog, but I’m always aware that those are still for other people, whereas this? This is just for myself. And I want to keep writing for myself and keep building that up until I finally create something that I’m proud of from start to finish. Maybe even publish it; who knows?
And to clarify, I don’t mean to say that there’s anything wrong with wanting to dedicate a large chunk of your life to Pokémon. Some people do, and more power to them. But I’m saying it’s not for me. I’m more saying there are a lot of things I never got around to doing because I spent so much time and energy on this fandom instead of the things I feel I should have spent time on, and now I want to fix that in any way that I can.
So what does this mean for the blog? Honestly ... I don’t know. I haven’t yet decided how going forward will work, and I really just wanted to tell you all of this to let you know that posts might not be as frequent as they used to. I still want to write about Bill and Lanette. I love them and love the relationship between them, and now and then, I love answering questions in their voices too. But I think what might happen is that you may start to see a lot more one-shots like the Crown Tundra plot, maybe even standalone, since I might start writing them as practice and warmups. You might see random headcanon posts about them because that’s kinda what I like to do. You’ll still see asks, but I’ll probably be more selective about which ones I answer, and I doubt I’ll get back up to a daily schedule again. And as for the Pokédex entries ... well, I probably will never finish them. (Incidentally, yes, I know that the Galar Dex is a mess that’s missing several DLC and mythical Pokémon.) Ultimately, when it comes to Pokémon, I want to make it be fun again. I want to create things that would make me happy and help me fall in love, even just a little bit, with the characters I grew up with. And hopefully, that will happen when I stop treating this blog as an obligation and more as an outlet.
In the meantime, I want to thank all of you for sticking with this blog for the past few years, as well as apologize too. I know the comments about the greater fandom might not be easy to hear, but I hope that you don’t take that message to mean I hate any of you. I hope instead it encourages you to be a positive force in the fandom, to think about how you interact with others in it and just treat each other well (not that you weren’t already). But most of all, please know that I appreciate you too. There are a lot of names I see frequently that have been a lot of my reason to keep going. And though I haven’t spoken to many of them one-on-one, I want to thank them in particular for being legit beacons of positivity and for brightening even my worst days. Not to be dramatic about it, but as much as a lot of the fandom outside of this blog has been a source of pain for me, a lot of you who’ve been following this blog have kept me going long enough to reach this decision. So please continue to do what you’re doing to brighten people’s days, please take care of yourselves, and thank you for staying with me for so long.
To wrap things up, as I’ve said, this won’t be the last post on this blog. The next ones will probably drop in February, when I start to answer some of the asks still in the askbox (again, at my own pace) and maybe even provide new content. In the meantime, I’m reopening the askbox for two reasons. First, it’s not fair for me to drop this on you without giving folks the ability to respond. (I just don’t know if I’ll publish many of the asks, but if you do send one, please rest assured you’re heard.) Second, if you’re one of the people in the above paragraph, I’d like to give you the opportunity to reach out for my original fic blog. As a note, I’m not really following too many Pokémon blogs at the moment, but if you’d like to keep up with my non-Pokémon content, I want to at least give you the option to do so.
Again, thanks so much for reading, not only this post but also every other post these past few years. Take care of yourselves, my folks.}
