For Dogust. The Cŵn Annwn, the red-eared white hounds of the Wild Hunt in Welsh mythology. Annwn, the Welsh Otherworld, is said to be either ruled by King Arawn (as cited in the Mabinogion, the earliest Welsh prose stories) or Gwyn ap Nudd (king of the Fair Folk in later medieval lore). Some say the hunt rides through the sky, chasing wandering spirits, others that their hunting grounds include the mountain of Cadair Idris, where hearing the baying of the hounds is a foretelling of death. "Cŵn" is plural for "hounds", the singular form is "Ci".
I'm sure they're good doggies who like ear skritches just like any other.

Alright, I just made four characters for Collektha Bounty since yesterday.
Arawn the celtic god of the damned , and his three hellhounds ( Cŵn Annwn ) are Réa , Slik , and Böler.
Arawn happens to be Grimskull’s arch rival, but despite of him being called a celtic good of the damned or the horned king, but he is also a hunter who hunts down lost souls or sinners in the human world or in the shadow realm, and taking them to Hell, but just because Arawn is a hunter, doesn’t mean he can’t be a bounty hunter just to get paid.
As for the Cŵn Annwn, ( Réa , Slik , and Böler ), well let’s just say they were adopted by Arawn at the Hellhound Adoption Foundation in the Sloth Ring, of course Arawn used to have nine hellhounds when he adopted them at that time, but unfortunately, Arawn only has three hellhounds, while his hunting partner, or in this case, his ex-hunting partner Mallt-y-Nos (Matilda of the Night) took six hellhounds from him by convincing the hellhounds to join her at her side of new ways to hunt, but that story still remains unknown.

Been messing about with the AI art generator on Canva, seeing what it would make of various cryptid / ufo descriptions... Disappointing, unsurprisingly. Mostly it just completely ignores the actual details - e.g. a two headed ghost in Blaenavon was just two creepy looking blokes stood in a Victorian street.
This is what it gave me for the Cŵn Annwn (hell hounds, literally 'dogs of the otherworld') in Owen Pughe's translation of Pwyll Pendefig Dyfed (Powell, Prince of Dyfed). Again, it ignored most of the actual details - of all the hounds that he had seen in the world, he had never seen any that were like unto these. For their hair was of a brilliant shining white, and their ears were red; and as the whiteness of their bodies shone, so did the redness of their ears glisten. - but, still.
This is now my new cŵn annwn headcanon. They're not freaking people out 'cos they're demon dogs. They're just too motherfucking cool for even medieval princes to deal with. I mean, look at him. That dog could take Pwyll any day.

ok so u know how each culture has their own mythology and their own mythological creatures and beings and spirits
imagine if there were creatures in the Spring Court, from scottish folklore, that you will not find in other courts. Selkies man 😭😭😭
I'm currently ignoring whatever SJM is trying to do with the night Court by invoking welsh mythology and folklore ('Rhys' is welsh ffs)
I think the Cŵn Annwn would be SO COOL for the NC omg. (im gonna side track this post solely for this Bec I have THOUGHTS)
Tumblr media
SPECTRAL HOUNDS IN THE NIGHT COURT. (note for those who don't know: Arawn and Gwyn ap Nudd are the same person just different hats so to speak)
Tumblr media
PLSSSSS
the whole thing with Rhys and Feyre was Haides and Persephone, yeah??? Take the concept of the Underworld and RUN WITH IT
the Otherworld in Welsh Mythos is exactly! what you can have!!!!! in terms! of an 'underworld' (note: the Greek Underworld and Welsh Otherworld are both vastly different afterlifes, but both Haides and Arawn are demonized by Christianity and made into a 'satan' figure, often)
Tumblr media
spectral. hounds. the image of the NC echoing death and afterlife. many celtic nations do not view death as Bad
the spectral hounds belong to the King of the Otherworld, Arawn. They've often been linked to 'hell hounds'. They'd be so COOL!!! and honestly FIT IN considering THE WRAITHS?????
I'm vibrating the potential for different welsh spirits and beings being in the NC adding to the fae-ness (Arawn is literally a king of the fae in welsh tradition)
and WITH THAT is the Wild Hunt. which is found all OVER European folklore and mythology. Gwyn ap Nudd (Arawn) is a psychopomp
Tumblr media
with the fear of the fae by the humans, something like the wild hunt would be soooo interesting
anyways Rhys with spectral hounds. Azriel With 👏🏻 Spectral 👏🏻 HOUNDS 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

OZARK HOWLER- ARKANSAS
The Ozarks are a range of low mountains found primarily in Northern Arkansas and southern Missouri with portions extending into Oklahoma and Kansas.   Their origins lie in the late Paleozoic when sand, silt, coral, and shells built up as layers of sludge on the bottom of a sea that covered  what would eventually become the American South. Over time these sediments hardened into rock- sand became sandstone, silt became slate, and the shells and coral became limestone- and the movement of tectonic plates pushed them upwards into a low dome-like plateau.  Over the next 485 million years rivers and rain gradually eroded the soft rocks into canyons, cliffs, and caves that have provided habitat for bears, bobcats, otters and other Southern wildlife along with more unusual creatures like blind cave fish, collared lizards and endangered grey bats. And perhaps a cryptid or two.
According to legend, the people of the Ozarks have been haunted for decades by the unearthly screams of a beast dubbed the Black Howler.  Those who have caught a glimpse of the monster describe it as a dark-furred cat nearly the size of a bear. Other reports claim it has glowing red eyes and demonic horns sprouting from its head.
Explanations for the beast range from a normal, though unknown, species of large cat to something more supernatural. A few people have even compared the beast to English and Welsh legends of black dogs, cŵn annwn, hellhounds, and other supernatural beasts that bring misfortune to those who see them.
More skeptical people have speculated that the Howler is simply a misidentified cougar. Though these big cats are believed to be extinct in this region, it’s possible that a small population has survived. Or perhaps a few lone individuals have wandered in from other areas. This theory is bolstered by photos from trail cams showing creatures that strongly resemble these animals, and by similar cases of “phantom big cats” occurring in areas of the US where they are not normally found.
Though some claim that legends of the Howler go back generations, cryptozoologist Loren Coleman has found that the first reports of the beast originated from posts on online forums in the late 1990s. His investigations indicate that the “folklore” about the beast was a deliberate hoax to mock the widespread reports of chupacabras and bigfoots that were becoming increasingly widespread at the time thanks to the advent of the internet. Hoax it may be, but the Howler has since become a popular piece of Ozark folklore and sightings are still regularly reported.
 The Howler is especially significant as one of the first urban legend monsters to be created online, laying the groundwork for later, more famous internet creatures like Slenderman, The Rake, Momo, and Trevor Henderson’s Siren Head.

Favorite Welsh (or celtic) mythological animal/cryptid??
as i'm a werewolf man... the Gwyllgi s p e a k s to me (and also inspired my oc bleddyn a lil bit). it's a big black wolf (or mastiff dog, depending on location) and eats the souls of sinful men - basically they're a kind of hellhound and they have multiple names:
Gwyllgi (literally: Wild Dog or Twilight Dogs)
Cŵn Annwfn/Annwn (literally: Otherworld/Netherworlds Dogs)
Cŵn Cyrff (literally: Corpse Dogs)
they're HUGE apparently and have, according to legend, killed humans at the mere Sight of them!!

Today is St John’s Eve/ Midsummer Eve, which Welsh folklore tells us is an important occasion for supernatural dogs:
"The Cŵn Annwn went in procession through the lonely lanes and byways of Wales guided by their master, a dark gigantic figure w/ a horn around his neck"

Your fae story with hobie lives in my mind. It makes me crave more of fae hobiexreader then it makes me sad because both endings are so amazing but very bittersweet. And no matter what the ‘good’ ending will just in another life play out to be the bad ending. Since the cycle repeats until we break it so my thoughts going back to that just make it even sadder. (I loved the story so my mind ruins with things about the story.) God do I love and hate angst🩷
Tumblr media
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! YOUR COMMENT MEANS A LOT TO ME 💛💛💛
Oh I keep missing fae hobie too 😔 (feel free to send in a request for that au when I open requests again!) (No rewrites for the ending tho bc it's already perfect ❤️)
Yeah, the cycles are incredibly sad when you think about it, just living through those lives only to end up dead over and over again through time and different eras. (The first life was at least 400 years ago) so imagine just living a thousand lifetimes with the one you love but only briefly.
You're right about not having a 'good' ending! But both have a 'good' side of it. (Ending the cycle/being happy with hobie even though the cycle continues) I love it sm and I'm glad I conveyed it just right in my writing bc in my head it was a tangled mess lol
Also also I loved writing the details, from the flowers and plants to the visions and tiny details. Them in itself already tell what's to become and what's happening in the background without blatantly showing it.
Sorry this was long lol thank you for sending your thoughts, lovely!! Have a tf secret- Nellie's character is inspired by the welsh mythology Cŵn Annwn and Odysseus's dog, argos.

Hunt On Dark Waters [ARC Review]
Tumblr media
Release Date: 7th November 2023
Overall Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
My Review:
Hunt on Dark Waters by Katee Robert is a contemporary romance set in a fantasy world of various realms. Our witchy heroine, Evelyn has a bad habit of swiping valuables with her sticky fingers. After stealing from her ex Lizzie, a powerful vampire, she escapes through a portal. Evie finds herself floundering in the magical sea between realms called Threshold. She is then rescued onto the Crimson Hag, home to our telekentic hero.
With no tangible childhood he could remember, Captain Bowen's unflinching loyalty to his ship under the Cŵn Annwn has been his life's duty. The Cŵn Annwn is a network of ships like the Crimson Hag operate under. He has always enforced their rules and vows with no questions asked. Evelyn is no exception to the rule and he gives her the ultimatum to join their ranks or die.
As Evelyn tries to evade honouring her vow, their two personalities clash. Tensions turn into something more. Through their journey together, secrets begin to surface and they both start questioning everything they have stood for.
~~~
This was one of my most anticipated books of the year and really took my time with this as I did not want it to end. I adored the book and am really loving Katee in this point of her writing career -consisting of epic sagas with political themes and great messaging. Just like I have been enjoying the ride through Dark Olympus, she is now taking us to the sea across the magical Threshold.
The world building was done extremely well. It was an immersive experience. From the physical space of Evelyn's world to the Threshold sea and the various islands surrounding it. Then we were introduced how the Crimson Hag is run and what exactly the Cŵn Annwn are.
On to the characters, I loved how fleshed out Evelyn and Bowen are as individuals before they get together. They are both very different people and feel so distinct in their point of views. I usually find that multiple point of views can get muddled with an author's narrative voice if there isn't a unique tone for the different characters.
However, Katee did excellent in distinguishing between Evelyn and Bowen's chapters. The differences were stark and it was a good contrast between the two. Evie initially starts out as a witty, sarcastic fun loving witch with a sentimental streak and some familial grief for baggage. While Bowen is a straight-laced Eldest Child coded man who is always following the rules of the Cŵn Annwn and would never think twice about going against them. He is very much of the mindset not to bite the hand that fed him. Or in his case, the people who saved and took him in as their own.
These two really go through a brilliant development over the course of the book. Flighty Evie finally finds herself a cause and someone to anchor herself to. On the other hand, Bowen starts to question the cracks within the corrupt system that is the Cŵn Annwn.
The main allegory within the book I really enjoyed was The Cŵn Annwn. They were meant to parallel the militarised police in our world. Katee does a great job of showing something isn't quite right with their organisation from the very start. Then slowly peels back the layers of Cŵn Annwn with each act to reveal their true colours. It is mostly through Bowen's point of view, whose gratitude comes from being taken in years ago. When Evie starts to question their modus operandi, we realise it's terrible system. It hits harder when Bowen has to confront the fact that he and his crew weren't really 'one of the good ones' and were just upholding a corrupt system.
In line with this, the plot was detailed, very thought out and well-paced. While there are loose ends regarding Bowen's past and a big event that happened to close off Act 2, I'm confident it will all be tied up in due time. The Act 2 Event is going to come back full circle in the next book as hinted in it's summary. As for the overarching plot of the series, it's been well set up. The direction the bigger story is taking is very clear. I am very excited for my favourite non-binary characters, Kit and Nox to hopefully show up! The way those two were being written, I'm hoping for either recurring roles or respective books for them.
As for the romance, it was solid. I liked their chemistry and banter in their scenes together. However, I felt that the development from lust to love could have been drawn out. Maybe by a chapter or two. They needed a bit more time to bridge the gap between being rivals who had an attraction to falling in love. It just felt like sex was substituted in when we could have gotten one or two more scenes to give their connection more depth. This was slightly remedied during their love declarations which pinpointed the moments they started to fall for the other.
Overall, I loved this book! Katee definitely delivered on all fronts. She has done it once again with her intricate way she built this universe - with Threshold and its interesting characters. This was a great first book with a sweet romance while wondefully setting up the upcoming series. I'm certain we will be seeing some recurring characters as they all come together to work towards their common goal. I definitely would recommend this for anyone looking for a pirate fantasy romance, vibrant settings and for those wanting to invest in an epic saga!
Thank you to Random House UK, Cornerstone, Del Rey for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The cù-sìth(e) (Scottish Gaelic pronunciation: [kʰuː ˈʃiː]), plural coin-shìth(e) (Scottish Gaelic pronunciation: [kʰɔɲ ˈhiː]) is a mythical hound found in Irish folklore and Scottish folklore. In Irish folklore it is spelled cú sídhe, and it also bears some resemblance to the Welsh Cŵn Annwn.
The cù-sìth is thought to make its home in the clefts of rocks and to roam the moors of the Highlands. It is usually described as having a shaggy, dark green coat and being as large as a small cow.
According to legend, the creature was capable of hunting silently, but would occasionally let out three terrifying barks, and only three, that could be heard for miles by those listening for it, even far out at sea. Those who hear the barking of the Cù-Sìth must reach safety by the third bark or be overcome with terror to the point of death.
OOOOOO I've heard of these before!! I honestly love all Scottish/Welsh/Irish folklore because it's so fucking cool!!!!
Book Blurb: A stern captain meets his witchy match in this captivating first fantasy romance novel in the Crimson Sails series from Katee Robert, the New York Times bestselling author of the TikTok smash-hit Neon Gods.
Evelyn is a witch with a perfect storm of impulses: terrible taste in bed partners, sticky fingers, and a lust for danger. After she steals from her vampire ex and falls through a portal to another realm, she’s fished out of the waters by a band of seafarers and their telekinetic captain. She’s immediately given a choice—join their ship’s crew or die.
Bowen has no memory of his life before he became one of the Cŵn Annwn. He and his band of pirates are bound by vow to patrol through Threshold, the magical sea in between realms, keeping the portals to other worlds safe. When he rescues Evelyn, he doesn’t expect to be attracted to the unflappably brassy pickpocket. The longer he spends in her presence, the more he begins to question if his heart is the next thing she’ll steal.
But as tension heats up between Bowen and Evelyn, the danger at sea escalates as well. Because Evelyn has no intention of keeping her vows to the Cŵn Annwn, and if she betrays the crew, both she and Bowen will pay the ultimate price....
Review:
She's a witch and a thief and he's the pirate captain who's heart she's stolen. Evelyn is a witch with terrible taste in bed partners, a penchant for stealing, and a love of danger. While leaving her latest ex, a vampire from a powerful family, she steals some jewels and falls through a portal to another realm... only to be rescued by a band of seafarers and their telekinetic captain who gives her two choices: join the crew or die... and it looks like she's joining the crew. Bowen is one of the Cŵn Annwn, he's the captain of a band of pirates who are bound by vow to patrol through Threshold, the magical sea in between realms. When he rescues Evelyn he never expects himself to get attached to this beautiful brassy pickpocket. Yet the longer they spend together the more the chemistry between them is undeniable. Bowen and Evelyn both want different things, she wants nothing more than to escape while he wants to uphold the rules.... yet fate seems to have other ideas for them. This is the first book in the series and I can't wait to see where the next book goes! Bowen and Evelyn make a cute couple and they have great chemistry. The pirate fantasy adventure aspect of this book was a lot of fun and I can't wait to see where the next book goes!!
*Spoiler: Bowen and Evelyn fall in love, Bowen's crew abandon him and Evelyn's vampire ex tracks them down and demands they help her get her treasure back. Bowen, Evelyn and Lizzie all decide to team up to get back Lizzie's treasure and find Bowen's ship again.*
*Thanks Netgalley and Berkley Publishing Group, Berkley for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
Welsh!Night Court + Welsh Mythology
Cŵn Annwn: spectral hounds of Annwn, the otherworld of Welsh myth, associated with Arawn or Gwyn ap Nudd in the Wild Hunt
Morgens: Welsh + Breton water spirits that drown men. Has been compared to sirens/mermaids without fishtails. The mari-morgans, who were well-versed in evil spells, would drag young men underwater and the men would never be seen again
Cyhyraeth: ghostly spirit in Welsh mythology, a disembodied moaning voice that sounds before a person's death; similar to the Iriah Banshee. The noise is said to be "doleful and disagreeable", like the groans and sighs of someone deathly ill, and to sound three times (growing weaker and fainter each time) as a threefold warning before the person expires
Ceffyl Dŵr: a water horse in Welsh Mythology, similar to the Kelpie or Púca. They inhabit mostly mountain pools, waterfalls or seashores. Believed to be a spirit assuming the shape of a black or gret horse w a white mane. It will carry its rider a great distance or fly into the sky, evaporate into mist and then drop the rider to their death
The Wild Hunt: Gwyn ap Nudd was depicted as a wild huntsman riding a demon horse who hunts souls at night along with a pack of white-bodied and red-eared 'dogs of hell'. In Arthurian legends, he is the king of the Underworld who makes sure that the imprisoned devils do not destroy human souls
🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻 the POTENTIAL. the IMAGE of such a beautiful and colorful (and spooky) mythology that could be brought to life in the night court. with SJM going for a "Haides and Persephone" retelling, it'd be so interesting to see various forms of creatures or fae that are related to death or death omens or are just extremely dangerous that can, u know, cause death lmao
