i know andrew lloyd webber or ts eliot didnt think twice about this but i love how the macavity number and the mr mistoffelees number are one after the other.

both macavity and misto are definitely the "magical cats" (with one more than the other) and i think it's clever how theyre both introduced.

macavity is the bad guy, the antagonist, we hear about him through subtle hints from demeter every time there's a loud crash, and he uses tricks and illusions to steal old deut away from the tribe. in the 2016 broadway revival, he's known to use some sort of hypnotism to hypnotize the other cats and has a trick of disappearing so that he's not caught for his crimes.

then after the entirety of macavity, we are introduced to mr. mistoffelees, the conjuring cat, another magical cat but this time with pizazz and he saves old deut, thus saving the entire ball.

and its really smart how the audience is introduced to magic in the jellicle tribe, but there are two different kinds of magic.

there's the bad magic that's represented by macavity. a fiery one, one that causes chaos and wreaks havoc, causes fear amongst the tribe. he takes away the light in the scene and vanishes.

but then there's good magic, represented by mistoffelees. makes everyone look at it in awe and spreads joyfulness. it's pure, it's fun, even with all of the electric boom, it means absolutely no harm, only to cause an amazing spectacle to make others smile. he brings the light back onto the stage and makes his presence known to everyone.

macavity and mistoffelees are truly two sides of a coin when it comes to magic powers.

Ultimately, the reason Cats (2019) didn’t work is that it never took itself seriously.

You may say “well, how could they possibly do that? The premise is ridiculous.”

Yes, the premise is ridiculous. But the show didn’t earn (at one point) the honor of “longest running show on Broadway” by simply being ridiculous.

People singing and dancing, dressed as cats, only works by suspension of disbelief.

You can’t suspend disbelief if the narrative isn’t trying to take itself seriously.

Will everyone enjoy the show, even when done right? No. There is, thus far, nothing everyone enjoys. We’re all different that way.

But this

Is not taking itself seriously.

They look more anatomically accurate and cost much more money to make, but that’s how they come across as less convincing.

Having the physical attributes. The exaggerated features to play off of is INVALUABLE to a Cats performer and their performance.

Cats (2019) doesn’t try too hard for feline mannerisms, but when they do, it doesn’t work. Why? Because there’s nothing actually there to play off of except imagination.

Imagination is a powerful thing, yes, but practical makeup, costumes, and effects are very useful. CGI is more beneficial when trying to create fully fictional or dangerous to film in landscapes. The ocean, an asteroid field, etc.

While humanoid cats aren’t a real thing, they have been created with practical means on stage for decades.

You can stack a cast until they reach the moon. You could have the absolutely most talented singers, dancers, and actors. It will all be meaningless if the overall production is not being taken seriously. Individual actors taking the project entirely seriously (Ian, Judi, etc.) will not make up for others (editing, effects, producers, etc.) not doing the same.

This absolutely goes for anything, with or without a ridiculous premise.

I recently completed a commission for Logan Mortier, who played Munkustrap in the Cast 13 of Oasis of the Seas ٩( ᐛ )و!!! He wanted a piece that would capture the relationship he shared on stage with his fiancé, Lewis Rimmel who played Macavity! What an honour to be given the opportunity to work on this! i love how broadway revival (and the us tours after) made macavity look like a deuteronomy brother like i think that was the most genius move that was ever made

the way he just looks like tugger with the messed up curl and his hair just so chaotic and everywhere, his outfit looking so rugged and ripped up, i just AHHHHHH

and you can just TELL that this dude has been through some massive shit and he looks insane!! like in the old versions, dude is just flying sparks with crazy makeup on his face, but this one is so subtle but yet it speaks MASSIVE words to who macavity is just by looking at him.

he's a banished jellicle, an exiled son, a threat who you can tell has some sort of magic powers coursing through his body, and he's here to get his girl back and to reign hell on the ball
