Hey, this is a post that got buried in our account at some point, but I'm very curious about what you think about the German aspects of Shidou's medical history!
(Sorry for being the third Shidou person lol)
-Venus
Wow you're all gonna drag me kicking and screaming into liking Shidou huh? He's already going up in the rankings lol.
Anyways, I'm gonna be honest, as cool a find as it is, I have zero idea what the deal with the German is. Shidou very clearly worked in a Japanese hospital, as seen in Throw Down.
Tumblr media
Notice the green signs in the background are written in... well I assume it's Japanese it's gonna be real awkward if that's some other language lol. They’re not the only ones btw, they’re just the clearest.
So it's unlikely he was doing his work in Germany unless he moved his wife's body there after her accident or something, but as much as Shidou's sotryline plays fast and loose with the science of it all, I highly doubt that would work in the slightest.
Now, after some research, turns out Japanese medicine does take some words from German, though it’s most commonly used by older generations and for obstetric (related to pregnancy I think) and gynecologic practice, which isn’t quite what we’re dealing with here. We’re listing completely unrelated organs.
German used to be frequently employed in Japanese obstetric and gynecologic (OBGYN) practice; however, it is now less frequently used. Source.
There are a few other words of German origin, which you can find listed here (CW for a few potentially uncomfortable words, especially related to WWII and medicine). You’ll see there’s quite a few medical terms there, but none of them match what’s on the tag. At least it explains why Shidou knows German in the first place, which is honestly a really cool detail!
I also thought about maybe his wife being German, but I don't think that works either. As stated in an interrogation question (T2 Q17), Shidou and his wife began dating in middle school, and they were family friends (T2 Q16) so it's likely their parents knew each other before they were born, and thus were likely in the same country. The only option I see is both of them being born in Germany, then moving to Japan, but they can't have spent much time there otherwise Shidou should have a higher level than "conversation level" German (T2 Q4). Are their parents German then? What- Why would we need to know this?
Other than that, yeah I’m struggling a bit on this one. Was he writing in German to hide what he was doing from the doctors who didn’t speak German? That’s too silly though. I think the best answer is what was brought up in the rb you linked, that it’s just meant to lead us into thinking of that scandal in Germany so as to get a better idea of what Shidou was doing. That or just Shidou flexing that Japanese-German medicine connection.
Apart from that, regarding some of the other things from the thread you linked. I think the tags being triage tags could certainly work! Especially the things from, well, Triage, since they seem to have a slightly different design, though that could be me going insane. It certainly makes more sense with the “cards of promise” thing, since triage tags carry a more concrete promise than… morgue tags? (don’t know what they’re called).
And the 007 in the back of the tags, I’m not sure if it actually has any medical meaning, but it could have a symbolic meaning.
The number seven has also ingrained itself into both the celebration of life and the mourning of death in Japan. After a baby is born its birth is celebrated on its seventh day of life, conversely after someone's death there is seven days of mourning, then they are mourned once again seven weeks after the death. Source.
So it could represent mourning for the people Shidou has killed, while also representing the hope for his wife’s rebirth. Something like that, maybe.
Or maybe prisoner 007 Kazui was the one who caused the accident /j
Anyways, hope that was good enough! Thanks for the ask, take care!

My my, I see a very busy person hehe 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️, if you don't mind, can you tell me what you study? I currently go to two colleges and there are days when I can't stand it 😭😭
The worst part of this is that what I'm reading for pleasure are few things, and I'm happy that your works are one of them ❤️😘 (currently I only read books for college😭)
~May your peaceful days come soon and you can enjoy incredible stories and interactions that warm your heart ~ ☕️💗🍯
I was looking at your blog and saw that you speak Spanish (is that your native language?) you know what's funny, my language is closer to Spanish than English hehehe (brazilian here bby 🇧🇷)
Could you give me your top favorite targaryen kings or queens (or what could have been)?👑
If Luc is my brother-in-law, then are you too?😏
Tumblr media
Hi hi sweet Vi! I was gatekeeping this message cause I just find it so endearing 💕 Oh yeah,, I am most DEFINITELY your sister-in-law now, since Luke is your brother-in-law! 🤭
Currently, I study LOTS of things— which, all of that, is the cause of my constant descending into madness 🥴 I’m studying Genetics, Forensic Science/Medicine, Reproductive Medicine, and also my studies focus on neurodegenerative diseases! Of course, that’s the reason why sometimes I want to combust into pieces, because I have to study all of that... And work. Pretty fun, huh?
And may I ask, what do you study, my love? Hope your peaceful days come soon as well,, please remember to take care of yourself & stay hydrated!! Self-care is a priority, too 💗
Awww thank you so much for the kind wishes darling, I denifitely need it! Can’t wait until I have the time to see all the tags & read all the fics I’ve been tagged in 😭 Honestly I feel so, so happy to know my fics are of your enjoyment— it makes me feel satisfied!! 💗 So sorry I haven’t written any more things for HOTD darling, I promise I will write more soon,, just taking a really short break from writing for the fandom until June, maybe! 🥺
If you’re Brazilian, that means we are neighbours, because I currently live in Argentina— yay!! Spanish isn’t my native language, I was born & raised in Germany but my mum is from Argentina so I know how to speak Spanish like a native, I have been taught since I was very little! To be honest, I feel more comfortable speaking in Spanish, no clue why 😂 I really love Brazil, and I’m expecting to learn Portuguese soon! ❤🇧🇷❤
Alsooo... Regarding the Targ Kings/Queens, this is hard to choose! 🤔 Honestly, I would have really loved to see Rhaenys as a Queen. I think she would have been amazing. She’s my one & true Queen! 😍 Who’s your fave King/Queen, bby? ♡

🎤 Alexander's pre-tournament interview before the Madrid Masters - Part 2:
Transcript:
Interviewer: When did you decide to make it public and why did you do that?
Sascha: I was very insecure about it for a very long time. I got bullied at school for it as well, because, you know, kids, they don't really understand limits, they don't understand where the fun, kind of, stops, in a way. So, you know, when they're mad or when they're trying to argue or fight with you, they use whatever they can. And a lot of the times, it was my diabetes, it was my insulin, it was my measure devices, you know, that would get broken.
And I was very insecure about it, you know? Even when I was going out on dates, or even when I was with my friends, a lot of them didn't even know that I was diabetic because I just didn't want anybody else to know because I was so insecure of what people *might* think about it. People might think that I'm sick till death, which is not true, you know? And then when I got injured in 2022, you know, I had a lot of time and I had a lot of time on reflecting, kind of, in a way. And I was thinking to myself, "look, there's a lot of kids and there's a lot of parents that are in the same position that I was and my mom was and my dad was. And if they see that anything is possible, I think it would help them."
And I think it is something that was obviously very close to my heart. And, yeah, I'm happy to see, you know, so many faces, I'm happy to see so many kids travel from all over Spain, all over Germany, to come to our events and to attend them. It's a great thing to see and that's obviously one part of our foundation, but the second part that is even more important to me is, you know, not all countries work as well and medical care is not as good as in the US, you know, in Germany, in Spain, in France, or whatever, European countries in general.
And, a lot of the times, if somebody gets diabetes, if a kid gets diabetes, they just simply die because they don't have the necessary tools, they don't have the necessary medicine for it to live a long and normal life. So obviously we want to go into those regions as well, we want to go into the African regions, into the South American regions and the Asian regions to really provide anybody that is in need with insulin, with testing stripes, with anything, basically, that you need to have a normal life with diabetes. So, I hope that... you know, we're still at the beginning, we're still, you know, not all over the world, but we are in some of those regions already. But, yeah, I hope we can still grow and hope we can still make a difference.
Interviewer: Is it a coincidence that you had your first international event for your foundation in Madrid, a city that means so much to you tennis-wise?
Sascha: I mean, I think it's a coincidence, but, still, I mean, the event was *so* big, I didn't expect it to be.
Interviewer: Really?
Sascha: I mean, obviously, I'm German, right? So, right, I'm known in Germany, I'm known in the German-speaking region - we had some events in Austria as well, and stuff like that. But to see that, you know, so many people would show up in a country where is not my home is extremely special. And, you know, if I can help in any way outside of Germany as well, I'm happy to do it (smiles).
Interviewer: And what does Madrid mean to you tennis-wise? 'Cause this is where you had some of your biggest -
Sascha: (Smiling) I mean, it's my favourite court in the world (laughs). I keep on saying that every year, I've only lost 2 times here on Centre Court and it was to the same player, to Alcaraz. So it is very special. I'm looking forward to playing here every year, of course, and I look forward to hopefully playing some good tennis.
Interviewer: Can you explain why it's worked out so well, why you've always felt so comfortable here?
Sascha: It's a court which is covered, in a way, so there's no wind, there's no distractions from the outside. It's clay, which I love, and it's altitude, which helps me, in a way. I think those are the three reasons.

How You Get The Girl
Loki x Reader
1989, chapter 10
"Then one day he came back"
Summary: It's hard to find the one, but even if you do find him it's always going to be a daily struggle to make it work. Can you even make it work after he broke your heart? The answer to that is complicated, but it all started when you found each other again in the stark tower- and that's where our story begins.
Word count: 3,586
Warnings: violence, a badly written mission, blood.
A/N: I really hope you like this one! Thank you so much @peterbenjiparker for helping me organize this mess and make sense of the outline! Christy aka @chrissquares made these dividers! and thank you @nacho-bucky for beta reading this!

Loki listened to the sound of the heavy rain that surrounded the quinjet as they flew towards where you were.
It was too slow for his liking, he didn't want to imagine what they could be doing to you. It was his fault that they took you in the first place, he didn't know why he didn't recognize your Asgardian powers before.
The powers were so protective of you just as he was. Now he hoped it will be enough to protect you from your captives.
He absentmindedly twirled a dagger in his hand, his mind lost with thoughts of you. He could think of a million spells that could have protected you without giving you these powers, but in a state of panic he didn't think and used the oldest most powerful one. With the raging emotions he had he was certain he messed it up somehow and caused you harm.
All he ever tried to do was protect you. You were supposed to be protected after he left you, but instead you got dragged into this dangerous life and it led you here.
He didn't turn around when he felt the heavy hand on his shoulder, Thor's presence beside him was known.
"It's not your fault, you know."
"How can it not be? It was my mistake."
"You were trying to protect her, you couldn't have known."
"I should have known better, I could have done so much better." Loki's voice was as sharp as his blade, but he didn't push Thor away. He must have lost his mind, well in all fairness he is losing his mind thinking about you. "I thought it was the best way to keep her safe when I was gone. Then I left and I didn't take care of the spell well enough."
"Forgive me for asking brother, but if you loved her so much why leave her?" Loki was beyond denying Thor's specific choice of words.
"I left just before your coronation, when it all started. I couldn't drag her into this- and then I fell and years went by and I couldn't come back to her."
Silence took over and the seconds seemed to last an eternity.
"I think she would've accepted you, no matter what you did." Thor replied after a thought, he remembered the way you looked at his brother, he remembered the way you stood up to him and defended Loki against his father in the briefing room. There was no doubt in his mind that you would've stayed for Loki.
Steve leaned his head back against the wall as he sat on the bench of the quinjet; his supersoldier hearing gave his mind things to think about while the Asgardians' conversation died down.
Blue.
The tears on your face were cold as they stained your cheeks. Your mind was still foggy.
Five.
You now heard the voice say, it was clearer as your mind woke up.
Airplane.
You felt the pain as they inserted yet another shot of liquid into your body, your mind started to buzz.
"Rusted."
Another shot of electricity went through your body, you felt metallic taste on your tongue and yet you felt your mind relax with each word he uttered.
"Ice."
With every jolt of pain your mind drifted more and more even when you screamed.
"Nineteen."
"No, I don't want this. Stop." You whimpered. It was a method you learned from Tony- in your head you started naming all of your loved ones, thinking about each of them.
There was Tony, and also Natasha, and Wanda, Pietro and Bruce, Bucky, Steve, and now Loki- you let out a scream and opened your eyes again at the pain.
Folklore.
Your voice did no longer make a sound. You were distanced from your own body.
Longing.
You tried shaking your head but you only watched as your body stood still.
Furnace.
Your mind grew foggy as you saw your surroundings. You wanted to break out of it, you had to.
Red.
"Ready to-" you grunted and leaned forward from the chair you were strapped to as much as you could. "No!"
Your eyes flashed purple and you looked straight at the doctor, you saw the moment the pain hit him but before you could really harm him with your powers you felt the spasms of electricity pulling you back.
They stopped after a minute or so, the metallic taste came back.
"You want to play games? We will teach you to listen," he took your chin in his hand and made you look at him. "We will make you a perfect little soldier. Take her to her room."
He commanded and your eyes widened.
"No, please don't put me there, don't do it again." You started crying without noticing the tears.
"You should get a taste of your own medicine, understand what your powers are really for." He chuckled darkly as you got taken into the room.
The minute the door shut behind you the sensations began, you fell to the ground as the energies were sent to you until your eyes were foggy and you fell down into your own brain.
You saw the worst in there, and you couldn't get out of it.
You were tormented by your own powers.
Iyllir waited with her parents at the table until Odin arrived without his two sons and sat at the head of the table, she furrowed her brows, "Where are Thor and Loki? Will they not be joining us?"
"No, my dear, they had to go." Odin simply replied before the maids and servants began to serve their food.
"Did something happen?" Iyllir's mother asked.
"I'm afraid that Midgard is causing some problems." Odin sighed and leaned to talk to her parents more while she nibbled on the food that was served, keeping her ears open to the information the Allfather was giving her. "A wicked organization there got their hands on Asgardian technology, and now they got their hands on a girl with Asgardian powers. Of course then, you understand that I couldn't let them use the girl as their weapon- it would be dangerous, so I hope you forgive my sons for being absent as they are trying to find her."
Odin then looked at Iyllir.
"Lady Iyllir, I am certain Prince Loki will be back soon and all will be well." He sent her a smile and she returned it.
Focusing back on her food she felt her blood boiling, she had ordered for them to take it and kill the girl- and they betrayed her. That kind of humiliation will not go unpunished.
Excusing herself, she went back to her room. Some things she will have to do herself.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, she said an incantation and a box appeared next to her. Opening it, she took out the old weapon and held onto the hilt of it, feeling the power of the Dainsleif she strutted forward.
She would kill the girl herself if she had to; nothing would be able to stop her now.
Steve walked through the quinjet, Thor promised that he isn't causing the weather but it didn't make him less annoyed at the delay the weather provided in landing as they got closer and closer.
He caught the eye of the younger Asgardian who stood at the edge or the vehicle, he remembered putting him seated there when he first fought him in Germany.
He lowered his head and with a breath he started to walk over. Loki studied him as he did, and Steve let him. They stood there in silence until Loki looked back outwards.
"Thank you, for helping me find her. I don't know what I would've done if I couldn't find her."
"I didn't help you find her, I found her- you were no part of it, you actually didn't help at all." Loki replied, before adding, "I did it for me. I cannot bear the idea of her being hurt." He remembered how it used to be.
"Darling?" Loki opened the door with the key you gave him. He was dripping on your carpet but when he saw you he quickly dried himself, magic is always so helpful.
"Are you insane, Loki?" He shrugged. "There is a huge storm outside!"
"It would be ironic if I got struck by lightning, now wouldn't it?" he joked before coming to you, giving you a peck on the lips and then to your forehead to calm down the worried crease that formed there.
"I guess so… from what you told me I wouldn’t be surprised if it was on purpose." You cracked a smile at him.
"Now, what are you doing?" you blushed when he looked behind you to the desk and to the marker you now had in your hands.
"I just… brought a permanent marker from my room." You nodded to him and cringed to yourself when he laughed and moved around you and walked to the table.
"You can't lie to the god of mischief, my love."
"It wasn't a lie!"
"No, but it wasn't the whole truth either." He pointed to the frames on the table.
Your cheeks got warmer by the minute, and so did his amusement.
He picked up a photo and a small smile lit up his face.
It was a picture you took of the two of you, he kissed your cheek as the fairy lights of the fair, which was right by the beach, lit up your surroundings and the water. It was a treasured memory, the view of you glowing in the lights.
You walked to him and took the picture.
"Why did you get it out of your phone?" he asked.
"I want it framed, so I can always see it- you, all around the house when you're not here."
He saw you write down the date it was taken behind the photo before you picked up a gold frame and put it in there.
"That is beautiful, my love." He went and picked up other photos that were scattered on the table. "Can you make one for me too?"
His eyes were soft as he looked at the pictures.
"You have illusions, why would you need a photo?" You questioned.
"I want you, the real you, with me wherever I go. I want more than just an illusion of you."
You walked to him and wrapped your arms around his neck.
"You know exactly what to say to get the girl, don't you?" You leaned up to kiss him.
"I only want to get you."
"You have me." You whispered before he captured your lips in a soft kiss again.
He will get you back.
"We will find her." Loki was somewhat comforted by the conviction in Steve's voice. "Together."
And so they stuck together, the god of mischief and the righteous captain America. The team separated when they went through the vast grey warehouse.
No one cared about the body count, this wasn't just another mission and all of them knew that.
So with the gunshot sounds and yells- the god, the captain, and the sergeant made their way forward in search of you.
She paid no attention to the wild sounds coming from just outside the door. All Iyllir cared about was her one mission in the room she entered from the shadows.
The agents in the room were focused on transferring the girl who sat on the chair into the room she last saw her in.
"Gather all the stuff up, put her under fast! That will make sure they won't get to her." Doctor Zazu stood next to Commander Iago who was shouting orders.
The doctor organized his work, uncaring of your shaking body that moved as they lifted the seat of the chair to get you out of it.
The commander leaned in and the Lady could hear his whisper.
"I told you your little friends won't get you."
"Fuck you, parrot." You replied and got a harsh slap to your cheek even though you could barely move your head in the metallic chair.
Iyllir stepped forward in the room, her eyes like daggers as she focused on you and the commander.
The agents in the room turned around when they noticed her, guns raised and eyes afraid when they understood who they were pointing at.
"Lady Iyllir-" the commander started to stutter and moved forward, wearing a shaky smile. "We were just-"
"I heard you were building a weapon. We did not agree on that, commander." She awaited his lie.
"She could be very useful- and don't worry, he will not be able to get her. It's a good compromise, we can work it out!"
"Oh mortals are so amusing, betraying me was not a smart move-" she grabbed the hilt and pulled it out. She felt the weight of the power, of the need that was growing inside her. "I'm afraid that we can't back out now."
It was as if the sword acted on its own, seeking blood, and she let it find it.
The sharp edge first pierced the commander's stomach; she pulled out the bloody blade and turned around when she felt other agents try to fight her.
Looking up from the body- she saw you, you were wide awake and aware now, it might have been the power of the sword or her own hatred but she won't let anything stop her from getting what she wanted. You will not be the one to ruin her future, and she was on a time limit when she heard the fighting outside getting closer and closer.
Loki threw his daggers at the guy who tried to sneak up on the captain. After he did, he admired the knife throwing skill the sergeant had too before continuing on to find wherever it was that they held you in.
Before long the three located the room they thought you'd be in, Loki used his magic and threw open the two heavy metallic doors and then he saw you, being put inside a see through room. Then he took in the scene in front of him.
Bodies bloody on the floor, almost making a path to where his eyes rested at now.
The Asgardian redhead who he had spent so much time with the past few months stood there stalking towards a man in a lab coat, her royal dress had blood all over it as some still dripped from the sword he now recognized.
"Iyllir?" he called out, confused at the scene. Steve and Bucky came beside him, feeling the tension they stopped and assessed the way to you- down the stairs and through the guards in the big room and into the cell you were trapped in which was in the middle of the room.
"Loki," he saw her eyes widen and for the first time, she didn't look as innocent anymore. "I am so glad you're here-"
He couldn't even hear her when he heard your voice coming through the glass, the tears in your eyes and the half relieved half scared look in your eyes as you shook your head at him, yelling at him to not listen to her.
"The two of you go get her. I will deal with the girl."
He went towards the left then and the two supersoldiers went to the right, agents came their way but Steve knew nothing will stop him from getting to you.
The doctor took his chance to complete his work once Iyllir was occupied with Loki. He spoke in a loud voice at Y/N.
"Blue."
"No!" You screamed but her voice was hoarse.
"Five."
Bucky heard the chant and his eyes focused on the girl behind the glass and the doctor who held a notebook.
"No, this isn't happening again." He decided, knowing the effect of the words. In a silent conversation with Steve, he went in a different way
"Airplane."
Loki stepped up to Iyllir, trying to assess her.
"What are you doing here?" he watched her smile at him. "Do not lie."
His voice was dark now. He didn't know why she was here, but he trusted you, and more so the fear in your voice.
Iyllir studied the man in front of her for a moment before replying.
"Tell me Loki, did you ever feel that the throne of Asgard should be yours? I know that you did." She advanced towards him, still with a smile. "We can do so much you and I, we are very much alike. Why abandon that dream of yours? We can still make it happen.
Why abandon that dream when you know you'll make a great king, and I a queen?"
"Rusted." You shut your eyes and shook your head.
"That's not my dream anymore. This is wrong, Iyllir did you do this?" he saw his wand lying on the table just a few feet behind her.
"This is right Loki!" she swung her hand up in the air alongside the sword. "We had fun you and I, you can't deny it. So forget about her, think about your future- don't you want everyone to see how great you could be? I am your way forward, I'm your future, and I can get you that."
"Ice." You didn't pound on the glass anymore, your mind was hazy.
"I do not need that, I don't want that-" he raised his own daggers. "And I do not want you."
Her eyes shifted then when he started attacking forward.
"Nineteen."
Bucky shot another agent, moving forward and he saw Steve trying to get to the room.
"Folklore."
Steve looked at you, heaving your breath, still standing. You refused to meet his stare, you were so strong before, never bowing down to any outside influences, and now here you were.
"Longing."
The doctor's voice was shaking as Loki let his magic loose, Bucky rattled on the stairs he descended to get a good shot at the doctor. Your mind heard the word clearly though.
Loki held a dagger in one hand, and in the other he conjured spells. A green energy blast was shot towards Iyllir, she dodged it and sizzles and sparks flew when it hit a machine instead. Getting closer, she aimed the sword at him again.
"We could've been so powerful."
"You're not powerful, the weapon in your hand is. Do not be mistaken." He tilted his head and summoned a longer spear out of thin air.
"Furnace."
Bucky aimed his shot once he was in the clear. The room shook again, thunder booming outside, as he fired a shot, and then the doctor fell down to the ground.
Steve knocked the guy that came from his left with his shield, effectively clearing his path to the door of the strange room you were held in. He saw your hazed form falling to the floor. You tried to get up to Steve, but you almost fell. You pointed backwards but he paid no attention where you were pointing to.
With his shield he broke the handle and took down the entire door.
Once he was inside, he felt ringing in his ears and a light pressure fell upon him. He couldn't imagine what they were doing to you inside it.
You kept pointing backwards but he just pulled you up and carried you out of there.
"Steve, it's the-" you fought to stay up and aware.
"It's okay, you're safe now." He assured you but you shook your head.
"They are using the-" You couldn't finish your sentence as Steve took you up the stairs.
"Red." You heard the voice loudly and then as you felt waves of hurt crash into you, your mind sunk deeper and deeper and you fell to the ground with a scream, Steve catching you just in time.
The doctor held the wand in his hand, still bleeding out.
"Hail Hydra!" he sneered at Bucky, who turned to him and raised a new gun.
"Hail this," Bucky shot a magazine of bullets at him, his anger leaving no room for remorse. Bucky ran back to where you were with Steve.
Loki watched as you fell to the ground, his heart thudded in fright at the scream you let out. In a momentary of shock, he heard Iyllir laugh and he let out a small huff as the sword pierced through his side.
"See Loki, she wasn't worth it, now she's gone for good." Her smile was sickly. Loki noticed his wand on the floor next to the dead doctor.
His rage resumed as he fell to the ground reaching for it. Once the staff was once again in his grasp after all this time, the room shone with green light as he aimed the wand at Iyllir. The shot of magic he let out in the air hit her and left her breathless. She could feel pain in every cell in her body, she shook a bit before her skin turned as grey as ash and she fell to the ground.
Loki used the staff to get up and he rushed over to you, forgetting the wound in his stomach, you lay down against Steve, who was the only thing holding you up.
His hand was shaky as he cupped your cheek.
"Y/N?" he called to you but all he saw were your glazed eyes, a single tear escaped from them, running down your cheek.
And he knew- you were not with them anymore.

加油中国!When the United States 2009 H1N1 swine flu emerged, an international emergency, a declared global pandemic, it eventually infected 60 million and initially killed a minimum of 18,449 cases that year. But the final story of the H1N1 global pandemic was far worse than that, with close to 300,000 deaths, according to the final tallies in 2012 reported by the CDC, as you will read below.
Which is why I am scratching my head at how bizarrely negative forces are attacking China and Chinese people as it engages a remarkably aggressive front addressing this Corona virus outbreak which started in Wuhan, central China. I am forced to ask and answer a few questions.
During 2009 H1N1 outbreak, I don't recall xenophobic anti-America attacks across the globe, do you? In fact, do you recall it took six months for the U.S. to declare a national emergency? Did any government from the onset in April 2009 through the end in April 2010, including the month of June, when H1N1 was declared an international emergency global pandemic, then send out a notice to its citizens that they should leave the United States? Close their borders to American travelers? Nope, not a peep.
Like I said, something's not right, folks. I am reading hateful vicious attacks on the Chinese government for their supposed intentional conspiracy to intentionally under report the number of infections, yet that is exactly and always the case with such flu outbreaks no matter what country and the CDC reports illustrate that crystal clear. The U.S. H1N1 swine flu numbers were vastly underestimated and updated three years later, because dear friends, that is the nature of such viral outbreaks which don't care which country they started in. There is never enough man power, there are never enough test kits, there is never enough medicine or medical supplies. China is not trying to hide these hardships, they are well known, they are being reported on the news daily in China. There are always people who die, thousands of them whom we'll never know if they actually died because of a particular virus. Those are the facts, not any problem unique to China's healthcare system or government.
Its not a conspiracy, its just tragedy.
According to the June 27, 2012 research report followup three years later, it gets much more disturbing when you learn about the CDC's final estimate of the H1N1 virus global death toll. You and I find at this at this article at the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy website, the CDC's 18,449 total deaths number was "...regarded as WELL BELOW THE TRUE TOTAL, mainly because many people who die of flu-related causes are not tested for the disease." So during the 2009 outbreak, was anyone accusing the American medical and government authorities of hiding the numbers? Were Americans with hidden cameras strolling into the Mayo Clinic to PROVE how many people were really dying? The absurdity of these vicious attacks are that whether or not a person specifically does have the Corona virus or some other viral bug presenting as pneumonia, the treatment is the same supportive treatment anyway.
Something's not right here folks. The world should be applauding China's unprecedented, broad, aggressive response. (WHO officials and many other government and healthcare officials across the globe are.) I am on the ground here in China READ IT HERE watching with my own eyes and it is quite incredible by any measure, not to mention an enormous economic sacrifice.
Instead of looking at the will of an entire system of government acting faster than any other government on the planet could, we are one month later, still busy bashing a few local government officials in Wuhan who should have told us a couple weeks sooner. And yes, that is true those local officials screwed up. And by the way, those officials are in deep trouble for it. Just like the recent Puerto Rican politicians who are in trouble when we learned they didn't distribute hurricane emergency supplies that were sent to them to help during last year's terrible hurricane. A disgrace. Individual people screw up all the time and hopefully justice gets served later, but that's not an indictment of an entire country's government. Secondly, on this point, every provincial government has sent out a notice to its government officials pretty much saying that if they are stupid enough to do the same, they will face the wrath of harsh punishment. I don't doubt it for a moment. Lets contrast to what countless western politicians have gotten away with and remain in office to remind all of us that human error, stupidity and greed is not unique to any particular skin color or race or country. "What about..." reactions don't help.
And here's the mic drop for you: "The CDC researchers estimate that the H1N1 2009 pandemic virus caused 201,200 respiratory deaths and another 83,300 deaths from cardiovascular disease associated with H1N1 infections." Total: 284,000 deaths. Shocking, isn't it?
Was there a travel ban for any length of time to and from the United States?
Did China, Germany, Japan or any other country close their border to American travelers?
Today I noticed in the updates that following the United States Department of State policy suggesting U.S. citizens leave China, the United Kingdom embassy just released the same recommendation to subjects of the kingdom.
In 2009, did UK subjects in America get a notice from their kingdom to leave America? No.
Did the world suggest we isolate from America? Close the U.S. borders!? No.
Did Americans get xenophobically attacked and targeted by anti-American sentiments like the Chinese are experiencing now? Um, no.
Fascinating and disturbing to say the least. If you're an expat currently in China, unless you're in Wuhan, fact is that you're most likely safer and more peaceful and more stable by simply staying put than by leaving right now. You couldn't be safer than in this country, where almost everyone is staying home and dutifully isolating themselves with awareness. Not to mention that the Chinese government's decision to safeguard the society, the families, the people, is coming at a devastating economic cost in the hundreds of billions.
I have a friend in Mesa, Arizona. He told me earlier that the big popular China City buffet, a huge busy place, has no customers. Does that make any sense at all?
Let's test our ability to reason, to be rational:
If you were in Miami and you heard that there was a virus outbreak that started in Milan, in central Italy, would you cancel your dinner reservation at the Italian restaurant that night in South Beach? No. Would you buy a pizza next week at Joey's Pizzeria in Delray Beach?
If you were in Singapore and you heard there was a virus outbreak in Dallas, Texas in the central United States, would you stop going to your favorite local Texas southern BBQ restaurant with the owner from Houston, in Singapore?
Would you avoid olive-skinned dark-haired Italian-looking people on the street in Chicago? Would you avoid big guys wearing cowboy hats, cuz they're obviously from Texas in Singapore cuz there's a virus in Dallas and they might have just gotten off the plane? There's a strange senseless bullying extremism and activism in today's society and you should do your best to avoid it and not be a part of it. It is fomented by a small group of extremist activists while definitely not supported by your average mainstream person who is simply exhausted by their outrage-inducing antics.
Finally, here are some straight up, sensible accurate descriptions of this Corona virus which started in Wuhan, China. Its not called the China virus and neither was H1N1 called the America virus. Whether two weeks or two months from now, this flu season type virus will have passed and the joy of Spring will have arrived. Just like every flu season. However, don't misunderstand me. The extra caution and the remarkable response by the Chinese governments and people together to quell the spread of this virus was warranted because, yes it is correct that this corona virus is nastier than the usual annual flu bug, as was H1N1 in 2009. As of now, what we can confidently note the following regarding this Corona virus:
This Corona virus is highly contagious, it spreads quite easily. It binds to lung tissue and so in particular, likes to cause pneumonia, that's what infection of lung tissue is. That's more severe than a respiratory infection which is only in your throat or bronchial tubes.
The Corona virus currently has a 2% death rate. That's a lot higher, around 20x higher, than a more typical annual flu virus with a death rate of 0.1%. However, a 2% death rate is still much lower by comparison to the SARS virus which had a 9% death rate or the MERS virus with a really nasty 37% death rate.
The Corona virus is causing severe symptoms in 10-15% of cases. 80% to 90% of deaths from this virus are happening in elderly patients, mostly with other existing health problems, not younger people. That characteristic by the way, is in contrast to the America 2009 H1N1 swine flu virus which in fact had a higher death rate amongst younger people including children rather than those over 60 years old.
China identified and shared the Corona virus genome in record times, in only days and of course, immediately shared it with all international health and disease organizations. Medical researchers are already discovering that certain existing anti-viral medications seem to be effective against this Corona virus.
Its impossible not to marvel at China's broad and aggressive domestic response directed by the provincial level governments to restrict movement, restrict transportation, restrict business for a period of time combined with the voluntary dutiful cooperation of its 1.3 billion citizens who are in the majority quietly staying at home these weeks to let the virus pass; this model response is already being hailed by the international community as a remarkable unprecedented response setting a new standard in understanding what is possible for future outbreaks in whatever country they may occur. Is it inconvenient and costly. You bet.
Like I said, something's not right with the way humanity is responding to what's happening here. I haven't put my finger on it because well, its certainly complex and the world is upside down in many other ways that I also can't for the life of me understand or explain without ending up writing a very thick book.
But I do know this: It needs to stop. This vicious, political, xenophobic racist attacks and smearing of all things China needs to stop. Its really not helping anyone in the political corridors of Washington nor is it doing anything to help the man on the street who is just concerned with taking care of his family.
My family is originally from the Basilicata region of Italy, the little hillside Italian towns of Potenza and also, Grottola, which is just outside of Matera. They left their home country and moved to America where I was born, in Yonkers, New York. America became their home and it was my home until I left, too. Now over two decades ago, I left the United States, the country I was born in, the country that has plenty to admire and plenty to improve. But I left and I came to China and now China is my home. If you had asked me thirty years ago if this was my life plan on planet earth, I would have said you were nuts or a really bad fortune teller. But that's how it has turned out. I am truly blessed with my lovely Chinese wife and our family living here in Shenyang in China's northeast. You get my meaning? I am a mature adult like many with the powers of observation. I can easily see that whether we are talking about China or the United States or any other country, their societies and their governments have good points and bad points.
The xenophobia needs to stop now. Whether in a couple of weeks or months later, this nasty flu type Corona virus will begin declining and the joy of Spring will arrive. Between now and then if you don't have anything good, anything supportive to say about China or Chinese people, how about you just keep your mouth shut.
Mario Cavolo, Shenyang.

Hey, I'm doing some research for a school project and I'm looking for people's opinions if you have time. What do you think about people judging people on their first impressions of them and basing their opinions on that rather than getting to know them before judging them ? What do you think about the phrase Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover and what it suggests about people ? Have you got any experience with being judged like that (if you don't mind sharing) and what did it feel like ? Thanks :D
The practice ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ is easier to say than it is to do for anyone as we all (and I do mean ALL) of us carry one bias or prejudice based on things we may have been raised on, introduced to or lived in our early years.
It’s pretty much the love child of nature and nurture.
the practice is almost impossible to ignore when we as a people evolved and grew our cultures from those very bias that we have when we first encounter new people. That being said its not necessarily a SMART thing to do but we as people have to struggle to overcome it or we’ll never reach some semblance of peace or prosperity.
It should be and foremost, a personal responsibility to overcome and fight for however, not everyone believes that because sometimes there is a grain of truth to it for every one in a million case but I digress.
Hell, there will even be some places that will judge you negatively no matter what you do based on personal biases but I’ll get to that later on.
First Impressions are important because people as a whole seldom change their opinions on someone when they screw up on the first meeting, take my example with England starting trade with Japan.
There was certainly judging on both parties side. The Japanese thought they were odd with their coloring and their confusing exotic clothing that seemed to have so many layers/straps whereas the English thought their simple clothing was a bit plain but pretty nonetheless.
Despite them both seemingly foreign looking dress they both got on fine (plus the fact that they were giving them guns and western medicine to help keep the peace) and it helped that they (at the time) had similar backgrounds like having a monarchy and code of conduct.
Had this meeting been anything less than prefect there we would not have had the same super power that entered into the pact to become an Axis power with Italy and Germany during WWII as they would have lacked the technology (without stealing it from China) to stand.
As for personal experience I have had plenty coming to the United States as a child. Since my family was pretty poor (as in living out of our backyard garden and a slice of bread was considered a 'snack’) I was unable to attend a good school where I wouldn’t have faced many bias based on my looks or ethnicity.
I was placed in a school that was almost an hour and a half way from my home (back then I didn’t have too many choices and this was the closest one at the time that wasn’t a private one) so my parents had to drop me off really early so they could get to work on time which left me at the mercy of what would be my bullies who only saw me as ’some rich fat white girl with glasses that had parents.’
It didn’t matter to them that compared to the majority of students who were mostly black or Hispanic from lower income (like myself) that I was the minority here or the fact that we weren’t well off as much as they wanted to pigeon hole me into being some great offender for daring to be half European and Japanese and abuse me thusly until some very dark things happened that I rather not discuss fully because I just got back on some of my medication.
Anyway I felt like crap, wanted to die, attempted to at least twice and assaulted with a gun  despite me being outwardly friendly and kind on the first day.
Now here’s where it comes in that some people will never change their first impressions based on their bias.
In that particular school no one gave a damn if I was the real victim that deserved some sort of help because of the bias they had toward anyone that could be considered 'white’ or deviated from what they all collectively thought was the 'norm’ for certain groups.
The principal did not care because I was ’one white girl in the sea of so many troubled youths’, the vice principal did not care because 'if I’m that weak I should just transfer out to a white school’ and the school safety officer did not care because 'they just foolin’ around and I need to get used to it.’
This is what judging a book by its cover looks like-it comes in all different colors and sizes without taking them as individual cases as they come.
NO ONE IS IMMUNE TO IT AND NO ONE IS FREE FROM SIN FROM IT.
NO ONE.
I don’t care what race, age, religion, gender, orientation, disability or class you come from you all have a bias that causes you to judge someone in one way or another.
The people that refuse to acknowledge and work on those bias are potentially more racist and will not hesitate to pass on those tendencies to their families which makes them gross and dangerous to anyone that refuses to follow their line of thought.
Can we help them?
We can try but it all depends on whether or not they WANT to change. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. All you can do is try and wait but screaming at the horse to do it certainly won’t help.
The best that anyone can do fro people like that is to continue to work on them without coming off as holier-than-thou until they see the error of their ways and become a more open minded person and if they don’t-well, at least you can say that you tried.
We, as a people need to recognize that we all hold certain biases and learn to overcome them lest we end up with more traumatized children like me who may not seek help to overcome that trauma which will then lead to more biases against the group in question that created the bias that will continue the cycle until the end of time.
It’s easier said than done but god knows we (and I mean EVERYONE-not just cis-white men that Tumblr seems to think is the #1 problem of the entire world, I mean EVERYONE)  need to fix it.
'Don’t judge a book by its cover’ should be an every day practice we should all keep if not for us but the betterment of the world.
