"'Smoking gun proof': fossil fuel industry knew of climate danger as early as 1954"
"There is overwhelming evidence the oil and gas industry has been misleading the public and regulators around the climate risks of their product for 70 years. Trusting them to be part of the solutions is foolhardy."

The Power Of Media
Tumblr media
I need do address one thing, because I see that kinda mindset creep up again and again.
Basically, under postings about utopian media, be it Star Trek, Solarpunk, or - heck - just bare Hopepunk, sometimes people will just go: "Media does not do shit. It does not change the world."
And that just is... demonstrably fault and a very defeatist attitude.
Now, one thing first: Yes, media on its own will not change the world. It will not. If you have this mindset, you are right in so far. We can have endless amounts of hopeful media and the world will not change from it.
But...
We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words. - Ursula K. LeGuin
This quote of Ursula K. LeGuin is very powerful to me. Because it really captures the issue very well.
See. Right now we get bombarded with capitalist propaganda left and right. It already starts in school, we will often get it at home and obviously in media again and again.
It is so hard to escape, that to many it is hard to imagine that there ever could be anything else. I mean, we even have the issue within Solarpunk. When I read through those Solarpunk Anthologies, I will again and again find stories, that feature either capitalist worlds - or a world that has to be rebuild after the apocalypse. Because people really struggle imagining how it could be otherwise.
And this is why fiction is so important. Why Hopepunk is so important.
A lot of young people right now are able to see that the system is broken, that it has left them behind. Most young folks, who do not come from generational wealth, see that they will under the current system never own their own house. Their own retirement seems to be rather unlikely. And that is, if they do not die before from either the effects of climate change, from some pandemic through which we have to work because line needs to go up, or just in general because the health care system does not take care of them.
And these young people are willing to fight. They are. But right now they are only fighting against a system. They do not know what they fight for.
I know, for some this might sound like a small thing. But it is not. Especially not in a world, where more and more people are struggling with their mental health.
People need hope.
And again: No, it is not enough on its own. Just hopeful fiction on its own runs the danger of just being endless escapism.
We also need to offer mutual aid for each other. We also need to organize. And, yeah, we need to protest and actually get out there to fight.
But don't underestimate the power of fiction, when it comes to giving people something to fight for.
We know that media and stories have these powers. It is, after all, why those in powers dripfeed us the kinda stories that vilify those, who want to change the system. That tell us, that "everything is fine, okay, just trust the good billionaires" and what not. Because they understand this power.
And we should not leave this power to them along.

It's that time of year again where it gets a little warmer and I remember that Amphibia is a show I very much enjoy thinking about. Have some Anne outfits, as a treat <3
If you would like to see what aspect of headcanon/ au worldbuilding had consumed my consciousness like a pestering maggot, feel free to continue below.
Hello! Welcome to I focus on researching one very specific detail until I burn out!
My entire day has been consumed by figuring out how Amphibia's farming works. Like... amphibians are carnivores why do they have farms?
Well, I'll tell you why! The Plantars grow animal feed for predominantly crickets but also others such as silkworms, spiders, snails, etc. They grow produce like cabbage, mushrooms, parsnips, potatoes, dandelions, and turnips as well as heartfruit, a fruit not found on Earth.
In the past, the original amphibian hunter/gatherer societies found that mealworms were attracted to fallen heartfruit, among others. They began to use this knowledge to make traps and eventually began both containing the worms as well as growing the fruit.
Despite mealworms historical prominence in the farming and feeding of Amphibia, crickets are more popular nowadays due to their higher levels of protein. They also began growing a larger variety of produce to further increase efficiency.
Heartfruit is a kind of tree grown fruit with the color of a raspberry, size of a kumquat, and shape of a peach (hence the name). The Plantar's orchard is the only producer of this fruit as its traditionally significant but not necessary for frog kind. They are Anne's personal favorite of the Plantar's produce, being chalk full of nutrients and somehow feels nostalgic to her.
Speaking of Anne, she survives mostly on the Plantar's produce along with cricket meat (knowing that she can at least eat crickets).
After discovering that the amphibians hibernate, she begins to plant pole beans, blueberries, elderberries, and other produce and herbs in her greenhouse to cultivate while she forages and stockpiles for winter. She preps and stores wild rice, pecans, and sunflower seeds (discovered through trial and error). She keeps spare root veggies and other product in the basement. The Plantars help her do this, once they understand the situation, drying heartfruit and salting and smoking fish as well as making jerky out of bugs that they know she can have.
Anne's gonna learn to survive, even if the first winter is especially hard.

The skies where I am were hazy today, and likely will be tomorrow as well.
The reason?
The wildfires in Canada.
Y'all, I live in southeastern Virginia.
Tumblr media
NYC had the worst air quality in the entire world today. NY State Dept. of Environmental Conservation issued a health advisory over it.
My heart goes out to our neighbor to the north. I'm sorry y'all are having to deal with this.

Europe heatwave
The Cerberus heatwave is gripping Europe, with reports of tourists collapsing and attractions closing; experts have warned temperatures could exceed the record 48.8C.
Here are some key things that are happening as of right now.
2,000 now evacuated from La Palma wildfires
Hottest temperatures 'ever recorded in Europe' may be on the horizon
Widespread wildfire risk as nearly half of the EU is in drought
Italy no longer has four seasons
The heatwave is about to get much worse
Streets deserted' at people shelter from Cyprus heat
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned people to take precautions in the heat after being hospitalised with dehydration. The European heatwave has seen Israel hit with temperatures of around 35C (95F).
500 people evacuated from La Palma after forest fires broke out this morning. So far, 150 firefighters have been deployed to tackle the blaze, with 11 homes and 140 hectares of land destroyed.
Most of Europe is under some kind of fire warning as almost half of EU territory is in drought.
While the rest of Europe scorches, parts of the UK has been facing wind and thunderstorm warnings. Severe flooding and winds are effecting the UK
Landslides and floods have killed at least 22 people and left 14 missing in South Korea.
Italy, as of today, number of cities on red alert for extreme heat has climbed from 10 to 15.
Homeless people in US suffer third-degree burns
Wimbledon has closed the Queue for the penultimate day of the tournament after quite a different weather warning to those currently in place on the European continent.
The world recorded its hottest day ever last week, with scientists blaming the combination of long-term global warming
A blaze broke out in the Spanish island of La Palma - sparking a mass evacuation as flames tore through forestry close to residential houses.
Weather could be set to hit world breaking 60c at some point this summer.
Climate change 'most likely' responsible for extreme temperatures, we are getting to the point of no return say scientists.

A MAGA think tank (sort of an oxymoron) published a document with the official title Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise but is widely known as Project 2025 after the name of the group inside the Heritage Foundation which compiled it. Whatever you call it, it is a bloodcurdling blueprint of the shape a second Trump administration would take.
Carlos Lozada of the New York Times read 887 pages of it so we don't have to.
[W]hat is most striking about the book is not the specific policy agenda it outlines but how far the authors are willing to go in pursuit of that agenda and how reckless their assumptions are about law, power and public service. “Mandate for Leadership,” which was edited by Paul Dans and Steven Groves of the Heritage Foundation, is not about anything as simplistic as being dictator for a day but about consolidating authority and eroding accountability for the long haul. It calls for a relentless politicizing of the federal government, with presidential appointees overpowering career officials at every turn and agencies and offices abolished on overtly ideological grounds. Though it assures readers that the president and his or her subordinates “must be committed to the Constitution and the rule of law,” it portrays the president as the personal embodiment of popular will and treats the law as an impediment to conservative governance. It elevates the role of religious beliefs in government affairs and regards the powers of Congress and the judiciary with dismissiveness. And for all the book’s rhetoric about the need to “dismantle the administrative state,” it soon becomes clear that vanquishing the federal bureaucracy is not the document’s animating ambition. There may be plenty worth jettisoning from the executive branch, but “Mandate for Leadership” is about capturing the administrative state, not unmaking it. The main conservative promise here is to wield the state as a tool for concentrating power and entrenching ideology.
We hear a lot of far right rhetoric about destroying "the deep state" or "the administrative state" – particularly from the odious Steve Bannon. But what's clear from Project 2025 is that what MAGA really intends is an unfriendly takeover of "the administrative state".
Executing a conservative president’s agenda “requires a well-conceived, coordinated, unified plan and a trained and committed cadre of personnel to implement it,” the document says on its opening page. The phrasing quickly grows militaristic: The authors wish to “assemble an army of aligned, vetted, trained and prepared conservatives to go to work on Day 1 to deconstruct the administrative state.” That deconstruction can be blunt. Portions of “Mandate for Leadership” read as though the authors did a Control-F search of the executive branch for any terms they deemed suspect and then deleted the offending programs or offices. The White House’s Gender Policy Council must go, along with its Office of Domestic Climate Policy. The Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations is a no-no. The E.P.A. can do without its Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights. And the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration should be dismantled because it constitutes “one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry.”
Making the US safe for fossil fuel companies is a HŪGE Trump priority which gets too little attention. Remember "drill drill drill" from Trump's dictator interview? If there's any hope of reversing climate change, you can kiss it goodbye if Republicans win in November.
Of course abortion is a target of Project 2025. Christian nationalism would become the semi-official ideology.
If “Mandate for Leadership” has its way, the next conservative administration will also target the data gathering and analysis that undergirds public policy. Every U.S. state should be required by Health and Human Services to report “exactly how many abortions take place within its borders, at what gestational age of the child, for what reason, the mother’s state of residence and by what method.” By contrast, the government should prohibit the collection of employment statistics based on race or ethnicity, and the Centers for Disease Control should discontinue gathering data on gender identity, on the grounds that such collection “encourages the phenomenon of ever-multiplying subjective identities.” (Why the executive branch might concern itself with the subjective identities of American citizens becomes clearer some 25 pages later, when the document affirms that the government should “maintain a biblically based, social-science-reinforced definition of marriage and family.”)
A far right army of ideological zealots is to be recruited to replace anybody in the federal government not sufficiently pro-Trump.
One of the “pillars” of Project 2025 is the creation of a personnel database — a sort of “right-wing LinkedIn,” The Times has reported, seeking to attract some 20,000 potential administration officials. “Mandate for Leadership” maintains that “empowering political appointees across the administration is crucial to a president’s success,” and virtually every chapter calls for additional appointees to wrest power from longtime career staff members in their respective departments.
In short... (emphasis added)
This book does not call for an effort to depoliticize the administrative state. It simply wishes to politicize it in favor of a new side. Everybody does it; now it’s our turn. Get over it.
The book is hardly a secret. The far right is quite open about its intent.
Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise (PDF)
As with Mein Kampf, we know ahead of time what the bad guys will do if they hold power. We need to take the danger more seriously than Germany of the early 1930s.
What's needed to defeat Trump is a pro-democracy mobilization of the United States. That means putting aside ideological quibbles with other anti-Trump groupings and becoming more politically active in real life.
EDIT: Tumblr is telling me that the link to Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise isn't working and refuses to let me post it. But I just checked it twice and it's fine. Until this peculiar glitch gets fixed, go to this Substack article and click "Mandate for Leadership" in the middle of the first paragraph.

A new locked tomb thought
So if ALL the glaciers and ice sheets in the world melted, best estimation with the knowledge we have now is that sea level would rise by 60 metres [source]. Everything we got is now water. Maximum wet.
There would still be so much land not flooded.
For example, here’s an approximation of what Aotearoa would look like if sea level rose by 60 metres:
Tumblr media
Most of it is still there! You lost the edges, but you kept at least 90% of the landmass.
But, in the Locked Tomb, the House of the First/Earth is completely flooded. The best Gideon can make out are, “the floating chains of squares and rectangles and oblongs, smudging the blue with grey and green, brown and black: the tumbled-down cities and temples of a House both long dead and unkillable”.
So what happened? In NtN, we see that John can raise and lower both sea levels and land at will. Did he just....sink everything? Hide any sign of his little nuclear apocalypse using land subsidence? Whoopsie, nothing to see here?
John Gaius, get into this jail of acid and explain yourself.
