COTURN CT-01

Today "he" arrived, the COTURN CT-01 turntable. After unpacking, the configuration and installation with the portable speakers from Revox (A100 & B100) took place. A first test listening was done with Dark Side Of The Moon.

The guys from COTURN did a good job. Well done.

🎶 Let’s talk about s3x historical poisons, baby 🎶

Series WIPs about historical poisons! First one is about belladonna, the second one is on Coturnism and about this evil murderous nun that keeps quails and feeds them hemlock (google Coturnism trust me it’s cool). The third one, if I do it, might feature either a maid/server holding a pitcher of Acqua Tofana (google that too, it’s a colourless odourless tasteless poison from the 1600s) OR a lute maker making musical instruments out of yew wood (which apparently was very popular with luthiers and for making bows but it’s actually an incredibly toxic material).

Tackling my fear of sharing on social media by being joyous about rambling and sharing the joy of art! You, you reading, go do some art! Look how fun the sheer process of ideating it is!

All of the above species carry a neurotoxin, typically in their skin, muscle, and feathers (likely applied by preening) that is very similar to that found in dart frogs.

Common quail can cause toxicity referred to as Coturnism when they have fed on plants toxic to other animals. This may not entirely count, but you know. A few other species are toxic depending on their diets.

Spur-winged geese are another example as they become toxic from eating beetles.

C’était il y a quelques semaines.

De passage à Paris, j’avais réservé un lit dans une auberge de jeunesse.

Arrivé assez tard après la fin du Festival Gospel dont mon amie Isabelle Voitier dirigeait les chœurs, j’arrive alors dans mon dortoir. Mes coturnes d’un jour étant déjà endormis, je me glisse silencieusement dans mon lit et m’endors.

Le matin, après m’être levé et avoir pris ma douche, je rentre dans la chambre en caleçon et chemise, serviette et trousse de toilette à la main.

Je fais alors la connaissance de l’un des gars avec qui nous avons partagé le même air.

- Bonjour, je m’appelle Pascal.

- Oh hello, my name is Mustafa.

Nous poursuivons en anglais.

Je lui demande d’où il vient.

Il me répond qu’il est Turc et arrive de Turquie.

En temps normal, dans 99% des cas, lorsqu’un Arménien rencontre un Turc, le premier élan n’est pas des plus chaleureux, les grands-parents du premier ayant été massacrés ou chassés dehors par ceux du second.

Mais j’ai senti cette force me pousser en avant.

Je me suis précipité sur lui pour lui offrir une franche accolade.

Surpris, il ne savait trop que faire de ses bras.

Après l’avoir lâché, je lui dis alors “Je suis Arménien, et j’arrive d’Arménie !”.

Et j’y vais franchement car je n’ai que 5 minutes devant moi avant que le buffet du petit déjeuner ne ferme : “Et je crois que les Turcs et les Arméniens doivent apprendre à vivre paisiblement ensemble”.

Mustafa se demandait si c’était du lard ou du cochon.

Alors je lui cite les quatre villes turques d’où étaient originaires mes grand-parents, l’aidant à comprendre que ce territoire est aussi légitimement mon terreau familial que le sien.

Nous avons alors là un terrain commun. Il me parle un peu de sa ville, de ce qu’il fait. Je lui parle de mon parcours, de mon expatriation, de ma démarche.

Je terminais de mettre mon pantalon, mes chaussures et de fermer mon sac, je devais partir.

Et c’est lui-même qui m’a pris dans ses bras avant que nous nous séparions, et son étreinte était sincère.

En mon for intérieur, je pense qu’il a dû halluciner.

Mais je sais que la prochaine fois où il entendra encore parler des Arméniens comme des ennemis, des chiens, des traîtres ou d’autres qualificatifs de ce genre, il se souviendra de cette furtive rencontre.

Et celle-ci constituera pour lui une faille dans la doxa de la propagande nationaliste officielle de son pays.

coturnism is a rare disease that can be contracted from eating common quails during migration season. similarly to yesterday’s bird, it comes from their diet: toxic plants they eat along their migration route. this illness has been recorded ever since ancient times.

there are many medical articles about this phenomenon which are very interesting! they have too many big words for lil me to understand but they’re still cool!

again i wonder how birds can turn their diet into something that causes harm. it might be a measure to defend against predators, but that hasn’t been documented. also, this poison is only transferred when eaten as opposed to just touching the bird.

but thankfully for all my friends who are as paranoid as i am, the risk of getting this disease is low even if you are exposed to it. but it’s still better to be safe than sorry! be wary of migrating european quails i guess!

rating: 10/10. still a very pretty friend. i like them a lot…

10–11–22 Je pousse la porte entrouverte de la chambre pour prévenir le pianiste et son coturne que la répétition de chant va commencer. Le pianiste en caleçon se lève d’un bond pour masquer d’un geste vif sa presque nudité à l’aide d’une serviette. Pardon les garçons j’aurais dû frapper avant d’entrer… Je leur apporte les dernières partitions corrigées par notre cheffe. Curieusement leurs lignes de basse ressemblent davantage à des traces d’oscilloscope qu’à des portées de notes. Elles ont été remplies par des couches successives de peinture blanche dont il suffit de suivre les sillons avec les doigts pour déchiffrer la musique. Pour rejoindre la salle de répétition, il faut emprunter une forte pente. Je tente un raccourci acrobatique en me hissant en haut d’un mur que la neige a recouvert. J’ai peur de ne pas y arriver. Ma belle-sœur n’a pas hésité, elle, a dévalé à bicyclette à toute vitesse la pente tout droit sans freiner. Je suis sa course avec inquiétude mais elle arrive saine et sauve. À une extrémité de la salle de répétition, la femme de mon neveu maraîcher a étalé sur les tables des agrumes qu’elle a apportés de leur exploitation et dont elle vante le goût délicieux. Ce sont des sortes de grosses mandarines à la peau tavelée débarrassée de ses pores, légèrement aplaties laissant supposer qu’elles sont un peu trop mûres.
