Survivor Reborn
A/N: Part two of What’s in a Name
Thank you for letting me share my story. I may do a third part that has nothing to do with my story, but you know... Hotch fluff.
“Jaelyn? What are you saying?” JJ’s voice was practically a whisper.
“I was born Shauna McGuire and I was Joseph Whiting’s first victim.” Her teammates eyes ranged from sadness and shock to anger. “It all began at my grandma’s cabin and I’ll answer all your questions later but right now, that’s where we need to be.”
“She’s right.” Aaron was fighting back his anger, trying to keep a level head. “Garcia send the address to our phones.”
After the team had climbed into the SUV’s Aaron leaned over and gave Jaelyn’s hand a quick squeeze before they sped off down the street.
“There’s three entrances into the house. Front door, side door, and a sliding door in the back. He’ll be in the bathroom which can be seen from the front entrance, so I should go in that one. There’s one window in the bathroom but it’s too small and tinted so there’s really not a chance for someone on the outside.” Jaelyn spoke into her phone, informing the team of what they were walking into.
“What are the chances he’s going to be armed?” Morgan’s voice sounded through the speaker.
“He’ll definitely have a gun, though he’ll only use it as a last resort, and it would be on me not the little girl.” Jaelyn was surprisingly calm, considering what was about to happen.
“Put on your vest.” Hotch said when they got to the house. Jaelyn nodded and pulled it on, securing it into place. Then placing her jacket over top, zipping it up to conceal the vest and her gun.
“Alright, what’s the plan?” Prentiss asked as the other members of the team walked over.
“Reid, JJ, you go around to the back door. Morgan, you and Prentiss will go in the side and Renasci’s going in the front, I’ll be just outside since it has direct line of sight to the bathroom.” Everybody nodded and moved into their positions.
Aaron and Jaelyn walked slowly up the steps to the front door. Aaron had his gun drawn, Jaelyn chose to keep hers hidden, unsure how he would react. When they got to the top of the steps she started to get nervous. She held a hand out to Aaron to stop him.
“If you can’t do this…” He whispered, and she shook her head no.
“I’m going to have to do some pretty gross things to get his attention, I need you to keep a level head. Please don’t come in gun waving and empty your clip in his head. Trust me I understand that you want to but trust me.” He curtly nodded his head and she gave him a tight-lipped smile.
“I trust you.”
Jaelyn took a deep breath and twisted the door knob, nodding to Aaron when the latch gave way, and slowly she pushed it open.
“Grandpa Joe? Grandpa Joe, I’m home!” She called out into the dark house. It looked exactly the same as it always had. “Are you in the bathroom? I’m excited to see you.” When she stepped into the hallway she noticed Morgan and Prentiss to one side with JJ and Spencer on the other.
“You better not be armed!” Physically she shivered hearing his voice.
“I’m not, it’s ok.” Carefully she pushed open the bathroom door and almost broke down at the sight. It was almost as if she had transformed into that six-year-old little girl again. The same tile, borders, and wallpaper. Absolutely nothing had changed, and she had to swallow down the bile that was building in the back of her throat. Her eyes flickered over to the tub where the little girl was sitting. “Did you fill up the bathtub like you said you would?”
“What happened to your hair? Your long beautiful hair?” His voice was sad, his eyes demented.
“I wanted to try something different.”
“No!” He screamed causing Jaelyn to jump. He rose up to his feet and walked over, holding the short brown locks in his hand. “I loved your beautiful hair. I used to brush it after your bath, gently, holding you in my lap.”
“Then you’d take me back into the bathroom. Shhh… be quiet, you’d say.”
“Don’t want to wake your grandmother, now would you?” He finished for her, grabbing a fist full of her hair and yanking her head back. Her jaw was set and there were tears prickling at the corners of her eyes.
“It’s a good thing she isn’t here.”
A chuckle escaped his throat and he let go of her hair. Walking around to her, standing next to the tub and looking down at the scared little girl, silently crying with her knees pulled up to her chest.
“Now we just need to get rid of this little brat.” He reached down, and Jaelyn grabbed her gun, cocking it quickly.
“If you even think about touching a hair on her head I will put a bullet through your brain before you can even comprehend what is happening.
“I thought you said you weren’t armed.” He growled turning toward her.
“I’m not a scared six-year-old girl anymore Joe.” Her gun was steady, pointed directly at his head. Joe screamed and lunged forward, before he barely even took a step he was on the floor with a bullet between the eyes. Holstering her gun she ran past him, ripping off her jacket and wrapping it around the now sobbing little girl.
“Shhh, shh sweetie. It’s ok, you’re ok. You’re safe now.” Jaelyn pulled her out of the tub, holding her tightly to her chest as the rest of the team rushed into the room. “it’s ok, you’re safe. He’s gone. It’s over.”
“Jaelyn.” Aaron’s blurry face came into view. “The medics need to take a look at her.” She looked past him at the waiting paramedic and she nodded, handing her over to the woman who was waiting.
Jaelyn turned and stared at the lifeless body on the floor. Then walked over to the powder blue toilet in the corner. Closing her eyes, she sighed and let the tears drip down. This is where it started, this is where she lost her childhood. Somewhere within the four blue walls of the bathroom lay her innocence which she would never get back.
“Honey.” His voice was a whisper when he grabbed her arm. Quickly she brushed away the tears and turned to face him. “Let’s go.”
“Just a second.” She replied, walking past him to the dead body on the floor. She dropped down to her knees, leaned in close and finally whispered the words she had waited over 30 years to say. “I win.”
~
Jaelyn was leaned against Aaron’s arm, feet pulled up under her on the jet. The team was silent, nobody sure what to say, not wanting to say the wrong thing. Getting sick of the silence Jaelyn pulled away from Hotch and cleared her throat.
“When I was six years old I was sexually abused by my grandma’s boyfriend. I was coerced into staying quiet for the two years that it was happening. When I finally told my mom, he was already in prison. I went through a lot of different therapies. My family was very supportive and through their love and caring I made it through. Not without its difficulties of course. The name Shauna means present and I didn’t feel that my life was a gift. For my 16th birthday my mom let me change my name. That was the breath of fresh air that I needed and… until this case started I had never looked back.” Jaelyn didn’t realize the death grip that she’d had on Aaron’s hand until she was finished. Loosening her grip, she gave him a soft smile, but he just gave her hand a squeeze.
“Why didn’t you ever tell us?” JJ asked, and Jaelyn shrugged her shoulders as she thought about the answer.
“That’s not my story.” She replied simply. “and I promised myself that I wasn’t going to let him take anything else away from me.”
“Why’d you choose Jaelyn?” Spencer piped up.
“You saying you don’t know what it means?” She joked, eliciting a few chuckles from the rest of the team. “Jaelyn Renasci. Survivor Reborn.”

if the "ultimate Jemily moment" (thank you, AJ Cook, now I can't stop thinking about it) does not involve Emily finally confessing her feelings for JJ and them some kissing and then Penelope and Tara roasting them like "omg finally! we couldn't stand the pinning anymore" then I don't want it (let me be delusional, go away)
