Richard Schubert, the celebrated tenor and interpreter of Richard Wagner's romantic heroes, embodied a new ideal of the Heldentenor. His predecessors - Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Albert Niemann, later Erik Schmedes, Ernst Kraus and Heinrich Knote - were renowned not least for their voluminous physique and commensurate voices. Schubert in turn, bad a clearly focused, shining voice that enabled him to penetrate the mighty forces of a Wagner Orchestra. Especially lauded, however, was bis youthfully ideal stage appearance with which he managed to do full justice to the magic of his roles. Thus it is no surprise that it was Richard Strauss who actually discovered him. In one of the Nuremberg "Rosenkavalier" productions conducted by him the musician accompanying the tenor in the aria of the "singer" attracted his attention because of his extraordinary histrionic ability. Strauss was later told that said flautist was a student who was studying singing in order later to become a baritone. He decided to keep an eye on him. Nevertheles he could hardly have known that this young man was subsequently to become one of the most celebrated Heldentenors of the Vienna State Opera. Initially Schubert sang minor baritone roles in Strassburg; bis well-developed top range soon showed which way bis career was to turn. Eventually he managed the transition to the tenor repertoire and he subsequently sang in Nuremberg, Wiesbaden and Hamburg, learning the most important Heldentenor roles as well as many lyric roles. Even when he was celebrated as a Heldentenor he. still continued to sing lyric roles where he could relax and "oil" his voice. While in Hamburg he owed a lot to Egon Pollack, then the intendant of the opera. There, on December 4, 1920, he also sang the tenor lead in the world premiere of Komgold's "Die tote Stadt", a role in which he was subsequently acclaimed in Vienna. In April 1920 Schubert was engaged to sing five performances in Vienna. His Radames initially did not quite fulfill expectations as the Viennese were accustomed to the huge voice of Leo Slezak. Yet he managed to convince as Walter, Tannhäuser and Pedro in "Tiefland". A further guest appearance in the tetralogy of the Ring finally convinced all and sundry that here was a grandiose successor to Erik Schmedes, whose style, however, recalled rather the latter's predecessor Hermann Winkelmann. Unfortunately, Schubert could only be signed up for brief periods of time in each case which were used for cyclical performances of Wagner operas. Hence his excursions into the lyric repertoire were few and far between. Also in Richard Strauss' operas he was acclaimed. Thus he was an impressive Bacchus in "Ariadne auf Naxos" (convincing, both in appearance and demeanor as the young God - disappointed and hence suspicious after his Circe adventure - and his subsequent metamorphosis into a fiery young lover), an other-wordly Emperor in "Frau ohne Schatten", a neurotic Herod in Salome, a cowardly scheming Aegisth in "Elektra" or a confused but nevertheless determinedly heroic Menelas in "Agyptische Helena". His artistry was evident also as Samson in "Samson et Dalila", Achill in "Iphigenie in Aulis" and Siegnot in Pfitzner's "Rose vom Liebesgarten". One special curiosity worth mentioning is that this Heldentenor was also an elegant and highly flamboyant Eisenstein in "Fledermaus". However, his vital repertoire remained the Wagner oeuvre - from Rienzi to Parsifal. The excessive demands he made on his voice by singing such an exhausting repertoire all over the world led to a vocal crisis in 1927. A recuperation period turned out to be too brief for him to regain his vocal health completely. Nevertheless admiration was widespread how the artist managed to identify with his roles and thus camouflage his vocal deterioration - so much so, in fact that criticism seemed mere carping. In May 1929 he left Vienna but frequently appeared as a guest artist, acclaimed by his numerous supporters - both male and, more frequently, female. The
phenomenon of his charisma was the secret of his artistry. Thus he frequently appeared as Siegfried and in the last phase of his career, more and more often as Eisenstein, a role in which this glorious Heldentenor last appeared in Vienna on February 15, 1937. After terminating his career he started directing operas and ultimately taught singing in Hamburg. He died on October 27, 1958 in Oberstaufen in the Allgäu.

My DA Canon Worldstate family trees #1- The Cousland /Theirin family tree
I thought I’d share my (slightly headcanoned) family tree for my canon Worldstate, The Shattered Crown.
I plan on doing this again for my canon Hawke and inky at a later date because it was so fun making this. Anyway here’s the family tree and some explanations for some of the information:
Tumblr media
Explanations:
In my head Bryce Cousland was younger than Eleanor by a year.
Oren can’t be more that 5 years old at the start of the game hence my headcanoned birth year of 9:25.
I headcanon Fergus to be 10 years older than my Cousland.
Maric dying in 9:38 Dragon is from the Silent Grove comic series set in biowares own canon, I treat these extended universe stuff as canon to my Worldstate but with some differences (similar to how BioWare treat canon in the games). But obviously he goes missing in 9:25 and is assumed dead, it’s actually Alistair who finds him along with Isabella and Varric (it’s a great comic series).
I couldn’t fit Eamon, Isolde, Connor and Tegan on there, but given they’re not Alistair’s biological family it doesn’t matter so much on the tree as I’m mostly looking at the direct line.
Ardal Cousland isn’t stated to be Bryce’s grandfather but going from his death defending King Vanedrin Theirin in the Battle of Lothering, we can presume he’s William Cousland’s father and therefore Bryce’s grandfather.
I forgot to add the Mac Eanraig family on there, I do have a head canon that Eleanor has at least one niece from her fathers side I mean she’s got three siblings but the Cousland children only met that side of the family once or twice and never met them on the Storm Coast due to how dangerous it can be.
Why Anora doesn’t have a updated image from DA:I unlike Alistair and Morrigan- she didn’t appear in DA:I unless you make her queen. Hence the origin image. She’s not queen in my canon because my Cousland Amelia basically was like ‘look no hard feelings and it’s not your fault but you can’t be trusted on the throne after all that’s happened with your father and you willingly trapping me in a dungeon to be killed even if you apologised for it’ and put Alistair and herself on there instead. I do have a headcanon on what happened to Anora in my Worldstate that I’ll get into at a later date (it’s not bad, because I do like Anora because she a) didn’t know the whole truth for most of the game and b) she was just doing what she needed to survive as a strong minded woman and new widow in court but I find her a bit frustrating).
Updated image note: I found out how old Anora is so I updated the image. According to Eamon’s letter to Cailan found in the royal chest in the Return to Ostagar DLC, Anora is approaching her 30th year, making her 29 when this letter was sent presumably not long before Ostagar, so she has to be at least 29 at the start of the game and 30 by the time the Landsmeet happens. Anyway this age gap actually helps explain why Anora never met my Cousland, despite attending some of Eleanor’s parties, and despite her father presumably knowing Bryce as the only other Teyrn in Ferelden, as she is 11 years older than her so Amelia wasn’t old enough to attend when Anora was attending her mothers events and Loghain canonically kept Anora at home most of the time when she was growing up anyway.

I am glad to hear more of her (and your characters in general) so what were the main decisions that Ecgwynn made during the game? Did she choose to be the Queen or remain as Wardens with Alistair? What was her reaction to meeting Nathaniel? I love da and would like to hear more of your characters! Esp. about your Warden and Hawke.
getting this actually made me so giddy. thank you so much for your interest! it really means a lot to me, tbh.
as for the main decisions, ecgwynn's worldstate is a bit of a mess. because she didn't want to leave redcliffe in such a state in order to go to the circle, she allowed isolde sacrifice herself in order to save connor. she would have leaned towards siding with the templars if she hadn't been traveling with my husband's oc, silas amell. she made bhelen king of orzammar. in the brecilian forest, she attempted to make peace between the werewolves and the dalish, but ultimately failed, leading to them having to stand against the elves. at the end, she doesn't force alistair to become king; they remain wardens together with anora ruling. meeting nathaniel again was brutal on her. she can't look at him when she speaks to him, no matter the confidence she has in herself and her capabilities as a leader. when she looks at nate, she just sees howe. when she hears him talk, she hears his father. i'm torn on whether or not she'll conscript him, but more likely is her having someone give him a bit of gold and letting him choose his own path from there. and my hawke! sage is the ultimate workaholic. when she comes on screen, labor by paris paloma plays quietly in the background. she's desperate to provide for her family once malcolm dies, and then, with the blight, it becomes a desperation to see them all survive. which doesn't happen. act 3 sage is a very, very sorry sight. if you've spent decades of your life providing for people who are no longer alive, what do you do? who do you provide for? she puts everything she has into mage freedom at that point, supporting anders and his cause. she knows how to survive on the run, at least, and so does he.

𝐃𝐄𝐂𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐈𝐒𝐍'𝐓 𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐘, 𝑰𝑺 𝑰𝑻?

The old 50s tv show The Adventures of Sir Lancelot was a lot of fun, and it was very interesting how they dealt with censorship. Lancelot and Guinevere weren’t having an affair (as far as we saw) but they still had a courtly knight-and-lady setup. Mordred was Arthur’s cousin, not his son (this one has historical precedent; Monmouth and Tennyson had him as just a nephew.) I don’t know if there were censorship rules about magic or if they just didn’t want to be labeled a fantasy show, but Merlin was a Da Vinci type who put on a bit of a Great and Powerful Oz act but was truly a brilliant scientist.
My favorite, though was Tristan and Isolde. King Mark was a villain in one episode, and at the end, Isolde asked if Arthur and his knights could take her away to Camelot so she wouldn’t have to live with the guy. “Certainly!” said Arthur. “Tristan, would you escort Queen Isolde?” And then a knight steps up to take her hand, and they give each other a look like Hello there, things are about to happen as soon as the cameras stop rolling!

OTD in Music History: Conductor and composer Gustav Mahler (1860 - 1911) dies of pneumonia (which was almost certainly induced by a bad case of bacterial endocarditis) at a Viennese sanitorium. After a legendary 10 year reign as the Director of the Vienna Court Opera, Mahler left Vienna for America and made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in January 1908, presenting Richard Wagner's (1813 - 1883) "Tristan und Isolde" (1865) to great acclaim. Mahler's first season at the Met was a triumph, and, upon his return to Austria in Summer 1908, he promptly composed "Das Lied von der Erde" ("The Song of the Earth"). In his second season at the Met in 1909, however, Mahler had to share the podium with a young superstar: Arturo Toscanini (1867 - 1957). Tensions created by this situation ultimately led Mahler to resign the position and instead accept the conductorship of the New York Philharmonic. Back in Europe for the Summer of 1909, Mahler quickly completed his Ninth Symphony. Mahler found his only season with the Philharmonic extremely taxing, and, after the season ended with heavy financial losses for the organization, he retreated once more to Europe for the Summer of 1910. It was during that break that Mahler worked on his unfinished Tenth Symphony, completing the Adagio and drafting four more movements. Shortly after he returned to New York in late October 1910, Mahler began suffering from a severe sore throat; he gave his final concert on February 11, 1911, while suffering from a temperature of 40 °C (104 °F). After weeks confined to bed, he was diagnosed with bacterial endocarditis – which was often fatal before antibiotics -- and sailed back to Europe... PICTURED: An uncommon c. 1920s real photo postcard, showing the middle-aged Mahler in profile. This photo was one of a famous set that was taken of Mahler towards the end of his tenure in Vienna.
