Sue Lynn Tan’s debut novel Daughter of the Moon Goddess is an exciting epic fantasy inspired by Chinese mythology. Xingyin is the daughter of Chang’e, the imprisoned moon goddess, who was exiled by the Celestial Emperor for stealing the elixir of immortality. The two live a solitary life on the moon until Xingyin’s magic flares, drawing the attention of the celestials. She is forced to flee her home and learn how to survive on her own. Xingyin begins her quest to free her mother and return home, quickly moving from servant to student to warrior. Along the way she meets two men who she develops feelings for, and must navigate these complex relationships while not forgetting her true purpose. This book was full of adventure, and I thoroughly enjoyed the plot of a traditional hero’s journey. The magic and monsters made it impossible for me to put the book down, and I was surprised how much tension was present between the love interests despite the lack of background. The writing style is similar to that of storytelling which explains the fast pacing, however this book would have been five stars for me if there was more time spent on worldbuilding and character development. Overall, this was a book I could not put down due to the exciting adventures, battles and interactions between characters. Xingyin’s cause is a noble one, valuing family above all else. Daughter of the Moon Goddess is the first in the duology, and I am excited to see how Xingyin’s story will end in the next book.

Daughter Of The Moon Goddess has to be one of the most beautiful books on my shelves. The cover art is stunning but would the story be just as gorgeous? The answer is yes, I was swept away by this magical, fantastical tale based upon the legend of the Chinese moon goddess in which the story of a young girl, Xingyin whose struggles to free her mother leads to a battle with the most powerful immortal in the realm. ⁣ ⁣ I buddy read this with bestie Janel from @keeperofpages as we were both keen to see whether we should preorder the second book in this incredible new duology. Although it took a while for me to feel settled with the story and world, that is to be expected with the creation of any new epic fantasy. ⁣ ⁣ From the very beginning I appreciated the grit, determination and bravery of our female lead, Xingyin as she confronts a number of extraordinary and deadly creatures but remains hellbent on her mission - freeing her mother, no matter the personal cost to herself. ⁣ ⁣ Perhaps predictably so, there is a semi love triangle/romance element to this novel and I was concerned that it would overshadow the person that Xingyin ends up becoming through her hazardous quest. However, I was delighted to discover that this part of the story is very much an aside. Her romantic attachments do not define her as a character (or a woman!) and she doesn’t let it affect the endpoint that she desires. 🐉RATING: 🔥🔥🔥🔥/5 Fans of Sue Lynn Tan’s Daughter of the Moon Goddess won’t be disappointed in the eagerly awaited sequel, Heart of the Sun Warrior. The second book of the Celestial Kingdom Duology raises the stakes with a new threat to all the kingdoms of the Immortal Realm. In the opening chapters, we learn that Minister Wu, the manipulative advisor to the Celestial Emperor, has been promoted and now leads the military as General Wu. With this new power, Wu quickly turns his sights on the Moon Goddess and slowly the extent of his ambition becomes clear. Xingyin, who is highly suspicious after Wenzhi’s betrayal, finds she needs to trust her adversaries in order to stop the threat of General Wu. I appreciate how Tan raised the intensity for the second half of this duology. Revenge certainly becomes a driving force for action, but it’s balanced by Xingyin’s growing empathy. She begins to see how a person’s history shapes their personality and feels great sadness for the suffering and loss others’ have endured. I was less enthused by the continued triangle of Xingyin, Liwei, and Wenzhi. And Liwei’s naivete regarding his parents was a bit unbelievable. While my personal tastes would’ve preferred an ending before the events of the final chapters, I think most readers will be satisfied by the resolution. ❓Do you prefer books that wrap-up neatly with a happy ending?
