meet jericho shade. he’s twenty-eight years old. his pronouns are he/him. he looks a lot like david castaneda. his bio is closed.
jericho is a super-human with shadow mimicry and knife creation.
                                              BIO
trans male
one of the bandits best warriors to date
the war was a place for jericho to finally shine. prior to the conflict he was a quiet, geeky boy who went by the name of adrian ramos and associated with few people. his powers manifested when his life nearly ended.
in the beginning of the war, raids happened quiet often. in his neighborhood, humans came through, tearing families apart and killing super-humans on the spot. katy his next door neighbor and long time crush had fallen victim to these attacks. mustering up his courage, for once adrian found the guts to do something.
however, his efforts were feeble and only resulted in being shot without hesitation, quickly presumed dead shortly after. when consciousness came back to him some hours later, he found himself in a body bag.
upon discovering his new abilities, adrian was quick to optimize them and took on a darker persona with his powers, scrapping the powerless human he was and becoming a formidable super-human: jericho shade.
he jumped right into the fray, resentment towards humans - and the human he used to be, now conquered by the new super-human he was. the war finished, but his bloodthirst was far from being quenched.
whispers of a lawless city lead him to steppes, quickly finding his place among the grimm family bandits. determination, ambition, and his abilities quickly landed him a top spot.
HEADCANONS
still geeks out over nerdy things
he has a scavenged DVD & video collection, but tragically without a player
he has a few geeky books too, but no longer has the attention span to read them. if he is angry and seeking fights for no apparent reason, he probably just lost a fight against his attention span over a book.
best friends with mick
whenever he isn't actually needed for a task and is just hanging out with other bandits, he will just Be Shadow. until a 3-dimensional form is needed.

seven | diego hargreeves
pairing: diego hargreeves x f!reader
word count: 996
summary: oh, to be seven years old again, playing with you in the weeds.
warning: contains minor season two spoilers
author's note: hello everyone! it's been a while, hey. this fic was inspired by Taylor Swift's 'seven', hope you enjoy :)
Please picture me in the trees, I hit my peak at seven feet
In the swing, over the creek, I was too scared to jump in
But I was high in the sky, with Pennsylvania under me
Are there still beautiful things?
Diego didn’t have many happy childhood memories.
He had Grace, beautiful Grace, always there, always a comfort. He had Ben, always there with the science to carry out his wild ideas. Reprogramming Allison’s Teddy Ruxpin was only the beginning of their adventures. And you, best of all. He had you.
Even now, decades and miles away from home, he thinks of you. The only thing mental asylums were good for, thinking and dreaming. He closes his eyes to push past the barriers of distance and time, to wrap his mind around the memory of you. Seven-year-old you, your twin braids and big smile with missing teeth.
Sweet tea in the summer, cross your heart, won't tell no other
And though I can't recall your face, I still got love for you
Your braids like a pattern, love you to the moon and to Saturn
Passed down like folk songs, the love lasts so long
The sound of your war cry comes to him at night (or day, he can’t tell,) chasing imaginary sea monsters with one hand over your eye and the other swinging a stick like a sword. The look on your face when you slipped in the mud, pretty pink skirt blackened with damp earth, and you brushing the dirt off your knees before running off again. The feel of your little hand in his, running away from Grace when she called you back to the Academy.
Your laugh, bubbling from your mouth like water from a bubbler. Your pants, clutching your side with your hands when you’d exhausted yourself from running and climbing and laughter. Was there anything more beautiful than you? Would there ever be another partner-in-crime, co-captain, best friend he could call his? Surely never. There could never be anyone to replace you, his everything. His past, the present, the future he dreamt of.
How all the more crushing it was when you were ripped from him, screaming and begging as your parents shoved you into that car and vanished.
And I've been meaning to tell you, I think your house is haunted
Your dad is always mad and that must be why
And I think you should come live with me and we can be pirates
Then you won’t have to cry or hide in the closet
And just like a folk song, our love will be passed on
He couldn’t hold onto you, hand gripping yours like a lifeline, sweat slipping between your fingers and sliding apart. Reginald’s hand on the back of his collar, ignoring his pleas, your parents trying to coax you away with the promise of new friends in your new town.
You were no fool, not even at seven. “It’s not gonna be the same, Mama.”
Yet still you wondered, “Why can’t he come with us?”
There was only one answer, Reginald’s only excuse: “Number Two needs to focus on his training. He no longer has time for your… frivolous games. He’s missed enough lessons as it is.”
But you, stubborn you, mustered all your courage and spat at his feet through your tears. Looked him right in the eye, and screamed, “His name is Diego, not Number Two!”
And that was it. The final straw. Diego found himself being yanked back, choking against his clothes. Dragged back into the Academy, door slamming shut behind him. The click of the lock audible even to you, and your father led you back to the car, your mother buckled your seatbelt. Foot to the accelerator and you vanished, sobbing and screaming for him in the backseat.
Your tears dried, eventually. His, too. And you both moved on, but never forgot.
Please picture me in the weeds, before I learned civility
I used to scream ferociously any time I wanted
He promised to never forget you, and he kept that promise. For a while, you were a photograph in his pocket that he could look at any time he wished, a mantra to help him survive the missions and training and competition. He clung to your memory, clung as hard as he could. But despite his best efforts, your picture faded over time, colours yellowing, blurry and faded.
You promised to never forget him, and you kept that promise. You could never forget the shy little boy, who stumbled over words but held your hand tight. Who matched your imagination with his own, devising new worlds and stories. That little boy, so desperate to please his father, so desperate to be the best.
Your memory led you to the Academy that day, fingers clinging to a sticky note and eyes staring up at the haunted building. It was because of him, because of your search for him that led you there that fateful day. The day everything changed. The day Five fell too far into the future and couldn’t go back.
Sweet tea in the summer, cross my heart, won't tell no other
And though I can't recall your face, I still got love for you
Diego will never forget the day Five returned, never forget the words that left his brother’s mouth. I found someone in the rubble, Diego. I think she was looking for you.
And he held out that slip of paper with your delicate handwriting, and Diego read your goodbye. I’m so sorry for leaving that day, Diego. I should’ve fought harder for you. Forgive me.
None of his siblings could console him, and he couldn’t reach you in time, couldn’t find you in any hotel and spare room.
You’d slipped through his fingers again, and he lost you for good.
Pack your dolls and a sweater, we’ll move to India forever
Passed down like folk songs, our love lasts so long

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The oven dinged and you walked over to check on the lasagna you had lovingly made for Diego. It needed a few more minutes but the air was already heavy with the scent of herbs and tomatoes. You smiled to yourself as you popped it back in. A night of crime fighting gave him a massive appetite and it filled you with absolute joy whenever he enjoyed your food, making cute appreciative noises in the back of his throat as he went back for seconds and thirds.
Your nights didn't always end in dinner and cuddles, there was sadly another side to it as well. His nightly patrols had taught you to be prepared and you had learnt to brace yourself for whatever that might come through door. Some days it was him covered in bruises and bleeding, while some days he came in heartbroken. You weren't even embarrassed of the sheer number of first-aid boxes you had hidden strategically around the house.
You settled down on the couch with a glass of wine, happy to get of your feet. As you were pouring yourself a refill you heard the doorbell ring. You rushed to the door and opened it to find a battered Diego. He stepped inside and shut the door behind him. A quick look over him and you saw that he didn't look physical injured but something didn't feel right.
"Diego?" you said, his name a question on your lips as you touched his face with his fingertips.
He looked into your eyes but remained silent.
You stepped closer, the tips of your bare toes touching his covered one. You placed a hand on his chest and the other cupped his cheek.
"Diego, baby, talk to me."
He wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you into a hug, tucking you tight under his chin while you willed yourself to calm down for his sake.
"How can I help you? What can I do for you? What do you need baby?" you said into his chest, your voice slightly muffled against his rigid, tense body.
He took in a deep breath and monosyllable answer left his lips.
"You," he whispered.
It was all the indication you needed to know that he craved carnal distraction.
You rose up on your toes pressing a warm, tentative kiss to his lips, pulling his bottom lip into your mouth. He hummed in approval, his tongue seeking entry into your mouth and dictating the pace. You pushed him towards the wall beside the door without breaking the kiss. His back hit the wall and you trailed your hands down his muscle-bound arms. He let you take the lead as he grabbed your butt, pulling you closer to him. He moaned in approval when his fingers found you bare under his oversized T-shirt.
He lifted you up, pinning you against the wall and you instinctively wrapped your legs around his waist as your hands grabbed his shoulders. He took both of your arms and pinned them above your head as he kissed you like a man possessed. There was nothing soft or tender about that kiss. It was a battle of tongues and teeth. He nipped your bottom lip and you let out a silent gasp. He used this opportunity to suck your tongue into his mouth. The warmth of his mouth assaulting your tongue spoke directly to your hot, needy core, making your back arch of the wall.
"Stay," he growled, his voice primal and raw.
He let go of your arms and pulled slightly on your hair to expose your neck. He greeted your tongue with sharp, quick bites and long, wet kisses and in no time you were a mewling mess. Your hands reached his hair and you trailed your nails over his scalp making him suck in a sharp breath.
A  fire burned in your belly as his hands gripped your thighs.
"I need you. Now."
He placed a quick kiss on your lips and placed you back on your feet. Before he could get you, you pulled your T-shirt over your head and threw it in the general direction of the couch. He began unstrapping his harness but you grabbed his arm, stopping him from wasting anymore time.
"Just fuck me, Diego."
Your hands went to the button of his pants, impatiently undoing his fly. Burning with immoderate desire, both of you couldn't care less that Diego was still completely dressed. You reached between your bodies and stroked his length. His mouth formed a silent O in response to the soft pressure of your hand. He caressed your thighs, his hands travelling up to the soft swell of your butt as you rolled a condom on him which he had fished out his bak pocket. He lifted you up as you wrapped your legs around his waist, he stroked himself a couple of times before slamming into your wet heat without preamble.
"Fuck!" you screamed as you threw your head back. The cold smoothness of the wall behind you provided a delicious contrast the heat coursing through your veins. After giving you a moment to adjust to his width, he started moving, a methodic dance of pulling out and slamming in. With each thrust, you dug your nails deeper into his clothed shoulders, your eyes screwed shut with pleasure.
Diego captured your lips to swallow your moans while he snaked his hand up to your stiff peaks. He sensed you were close and started paying extra attention to your body. His tongue stroked the hard palette of your mouth as his skilled fingers pulled and plucked at your sensitive nipples. The sensory overload was enough to push you over the edge and you fell apart with broken screams.
It took you a few seconds to descend from the high and you rested your headed in the crook of his shoulder. "You okay?' he asked and you mumbled something incoherently which sounded like yes. "Well in that case," he finished his sentence by slamming back into you.
A cry tore through your lips as your hypersensitive body welcomed him in. Your clit was alive and each thrust resonated in every nerve ending in your body. You involuntarily clenched your walls around his pounding cock and he let out a fractured moan.
"Y/N, fuck baby, do that again," his voice was barely a whisper. You opened your eyes to look at his face as you clenched around him again. His head fell forward and he let out a string of expletives in your ear. His steady rhythm was becoming increasingly frantic and he pulled your body flush to his. The straps and buckles of his attire dug into your bare heated flesh and the sharp pain added to your overall ecstasy.
"I am close," he said, pounding harder into you. You took his earlobe between his teeth, sucking and biting, pulling him closer to his climax.
"Let go baby, come for me," you said as you too were close to a release.
His sturdy arms gripped your hips and tilted them slightly. The new angle drove you crazy and you started whispering his name over and over again. He emptied himself in you, chanting your name like a prayer. His shuddering orgasm and his sex-filled voice was enough to trigger your own release.
It took a moment for both of you to gather your wits and when you finally looked at him you saw his eyes were heavy with moisture. You touched his face and the tears rolled down his cheek and your heart cracked from the inside out. He pulled himself out and took care of the condom and pulled you on to the couch. He laid down with you tucked into him as he let a few more tears escape his eyes, his chest rising and falling under your palm. You knew he would tell you when he could talk about what had happened and in that moment all he needed was the comfort of your warmth. As the sun rose behind you, both of you drifted asleep with tear-stained faces and hearts as filled with love as they were with pain.

grocery shopping
summary: Diego and his girlfriend go grocery shopping even though he doesn‘t want to. (Y/n) decides to show him that only eating raw eggs isn‘t the best diet.
pairings: Diego Hargreeves x Reader
warnings: fluff
words: 1244
a/n: first time writing for my baby Diego and first time writing after a long time having writers block. I've missed this! Good to be back :)
MASTERLIST REQUEST RULES
Tumblr media
The moment (Y/n) told her boyfriend that they would go grocery shopping together, Diego didn‘t feel like doing it. He came home late because he followed his duty of being a vigilant. Accordingly, Diego is still tired when (Y/n) wakes him up at 9 am. At least the way she wakes him up is careful and lovely. His girlfriend presses small kisses on his neck and whispers sweet nothings into his ear. At first Diego wants to turn around and press his body against hers but then he remembers the promise he made. He promised her that he would join her at the grocery store today.
„Come on, Diego. You can sleep afterwards.“ Whining like a little baby, Diego pulls the blanket over his head and also buries his face into the pillow. With a sigh (Y/n) gets up and walks towards the small wardrobe to get some clothes on her naked body. On her way there she gets an idea and begins grinning mischiefly.
„I believe I should sleep in my apartment more often. It‘s quiet cold here.“ Of course (Y/n) doesn‘t have anything against Diegos boiler room even though it‘s small and sometimes messy. She tells Diego this, just to get a reaction out of him. And exactly that‘s what she gets.
Suddenly, Diego sits up and stares with tired eyes in (Y/n)s direction. He does know that she only said this to get him out of bed but yet he can‘t risk her doing exactly what she told him. (Y/n) turns with a big smile on her lips to the wardrobe and puts one of Diegos shirts on. She doesn‘t feels like wearing a bra today and the oversized shirt is the perfect clothing for that. When (Y/n) is fully clothed, she turns towards Diego who is lying in bed again, with an arm covering his eyes.
„You are a promise breaker, Diego Hargreeves.“ No answer. He probably fell asleep again. But (Y/n) wont give up. Quiet quickly, she stands in front of the bed and jumps not only onto it but also half onto the half-asleep Diego. All the air leaves his lungs and he stares with wide open eyes at (Y/n) who smiles innocently at him. She throws one of her legs over his body and sits comfortably onto his lap.
„You are the worst.“ As Diego wants to lay down again, (Y/n) grabs one of his hands and pulls him with all her strength to her. She does only success because Diego is too tired to resist. Now their faces are only centimeters apart.
„No, you are.“ (Y/n) smiles at her tired boyfriend who closes his eyes for a moment.
„Can I at least get an wake up kiss?“ A grin appears on his lips and (Y/n) bets that if he had his beautiful eyes opened, they would glisten full of cockiness.
„Of course, my sleeping beauty.“ Both of (Y/n)s hands find their way to his cheeks and she presses her lips in a passionate kiss onto his. While Diego wanted the kiss to last longer so he could let his eyes closed, (Y/n) pulls away as fast as possible.
„Now come on, we need to fix your weird diet.“
Finally at the grocery store, Diego pushes the shopping cart so he has something he can lean on. He tries to hide his tired face with the hood of his black pullover which isn‘t the best help.
While (Y/n) walks through the shop with a big smile, Diego tries not to look anyone into the face because his mood would probably get worse. It seems as if his girlfriend is as happy as a kid during christmas. After all, this is the first time they go grocery shopping together.
„We still need some fruits and vegetables.“ Looking up from her shopping list, (Y/n) realizes how unhappy and grumpy her boyfriend looks. That’s why she stops the cart with one hand and walks to Diego who uses the stop to close his tired eyes. He didn‘t expect (Y/n)s warm hands on his cheeks and her sweet lips onto his.
„Hey, I know you are tired and now I feel really really really like really sorry for dragging you out of bed. I‘m so sorry, D. And I promise I will make it up to you.“ Slowly, Diego opens his brown eyes and looks into hers. Her words put a smile on his lips.
„I will make you something special for lunch. Maybe with eggs, maybe not. I don‘t know if I should support your addiction.“ A silent laugh escapes Diegos lips and makes (Y/n) smile.
„Oh, and after that we can go back to sleep. Together.“ With an obvious wink (Y/n) shows Diego that she has some other plans with him today. Diegos smile gets wider and he presses his lips against hers because he can‘t resist anymore. She is just so sweet. Sometimes he believes that he doesn‘t deserves her sweet and innocent heart but right now everything that counts is the happiness they feel.
Because Diego isn‘t that tired anymore after all those promises and (Y/n) walks faster, they finish their shopping tour quiet quickly. And that‘s also how fast they reach (Y/n)s apartment.
(Y/n) gives her boyfriend the permission to relax on her couch while she prepares their lunch. With headphones in her ears (Y/n) cooks some rice, vegetables and chicken.
The smell of the almost finished food wont let Diego relax. He is too hungry to sleep or even just lay down right now. So he walks to the kitchen and leans against the door frame because he wants to enjoy the view he gets there. (Y/n) dances weirdly through the kitchen and the moment she notices him, her face gets red.
„Stop staring, you pervert. Better help me here!“ As if nothing happened she turns to the stove and turns the chicken. Diego walks with big steps to her and hugs her from behind. He starts kissing her neck like she did with him this morning. His hands wander from her hips to the hem of her (actually his) shirt and under it.
„Diego.“ His name sounds like a small moan out of her mouth. „First we need to eat and then we can continue this.“ Turning around, (Y/n) gives Diego a small peck on his lips.
Five minutes later their food is finished and they are already sitting at the table, eating it. Diego can‘t wait anymore to fall into (Y/n)s soft bed. So he eats as fast as he can which makes his girlfriend giggle.
The moment (Y/n) puts the last piece of chicken into her mouth, Diego stands up and lifts her up. Like a little kola, she puts her arms and legs around his body.
„But we need to clean the dishes.“ But Diego doesn‘t listen. The only thing he wants right now is to lay down in bed with (Y/n) by his side. Even the naughty things he thought about over the day moved in the background.
Finally arriving in (Y/n)s bedroom, Diego lets himself and the girl in his arms fall onto the soft bed. Immediately, he feels how the sleep is reaching for him. Diego is fast asleep only seconds after touching the bed, (Y/n) still in his strong grip.
For some minutes she lays her chin onto his chest and watches him while sleeping like an angel. Then she closes her eyes and slips into sleep too.

Word Count: 838.
“Where are we going, Diego?” You asked.
“It’s time for you to meet my mom” Diego informed you.
“You should’ve told me before we got into the car. I’m not prepared and I’m not wearing a proper outfit to meet your mom”.
“What are you talking about? You look great” he complimented.
“It’s too short!” you expressed.
“Don’t worry about it. She’ll like you, trust me on this”.
“Mom! Mom!” Diego and you entered their huge house.
“Master Diego! You’re back” Pogo greeted.
“Is- is that a-”.
“A talking monkey? Yeah. This is Pogo. Pogo this is my girlfriend Y/n” he introduced.
“A pleasure to meet you Ms. Y/n”.
“I- uhm.. The pleasure is mine?” you still couldn’t believe you were speaking to a talking monkey.
“Oh, yeah, sorry! I forgot to tell you. Pogo is an advanced chimpanzee and was my father’s assistant”.
“Yeah, I can see that”.
“Pogo, where’s mom?” Diego asked.
“She’s in the kitchen, making lunch for your siblings” he informed him.
“They’re here?” Diego was surprised and didn’t look like he was happy about it.
“Oh, so I get to meet your siblings too. Great!” you were nervous and excited at the same time.
“Uhm, no! Change of plans, we’re gonna come another time” he grabbed your upper arm and headed to the door.
“Diego, is that you?” a female voice questioned from the other room, before appearing.
“Hah, Allison! We should talk later, I’ve got some things to do” he lied.
“Who’s that?” you whispered.
“I’m Allison, Diego’s sister” she extended her hand and you shook it.
“I’m Y/n, Diego’s girlfriend” you introduced.
“You never told us you had a girlfriend, Diego! Come, let me introduce you to the rest of the family” she grabbed your hand and led you to the living room.
“Allison! Now is not a good time!” Diego shouted,  but she ignored him.
“Everybody, this is Y/n, Diego’s girlfriend. Y/n, these are Luther, Klaus, Five and Vanya”.
“Nice to meet you”.
“Me too. Uhm, five?” you were confused.
“Yeah, he disappeared before he could choose a name, but now he’s back” she explained.
“What? Back from where?”.
“The future” five said.
“Ah, right” you laughed “oh, you’re not joking?”.
“Diego, didn’t you tell her about us?” Klaus asked.
“He said that you don’t have a great relationship and that you only meet at funerals or weddings” you told them.
“But he didn’t tell you who we are or what we do, did he?” Luther questioned.
“We haven’t got there yet” Diego defended.
Tumblr media
“What’s that supposed to mean?” you crossed your arms.
“We’re taking things slowly and I didn’t want to freak you out”.
“But if she was gonna meet mom, then surely she knows about her” Klaus said.
“Know what?” you asked.
“That she’s a robot” Luther replied.
“What?” you didn’t know if they were joking or not.
“Guys, stop!” Diego demanded.
“No, I wanna know everything, since you didn’t care to tell me” you insisted.
“We have powers” Allison stated.
“Like what?”.
“Luther has superhuman strength, not to mention our dear old dad injected him with a serum that turned his upper body into an ape. Allison can make people do what she wants by saying ‘I heard a rumor’ at the beginning of the sentence. I can see and talk to the dead. Five can travel in time. We had another brother called Ben, he died on a mission and he was able to transform into monsters from other dimensions. Vanya is normal and your boyfriend Diego can hold his breath for long periods of time and curve any object he throws” Klaus elaborated.
“Oh!... I see” you needed a minute to comprehend and process the new information.
“Y/n, I can explain” Diego said.
“Just leave me alone” you headed to the main door, but he stopped you from the leaving.
“Just listen to me before you leave. I didn’t tell you because I was ashamed of my family and me”.
“What’s there to be ashamed of?”.
“Well, Luther who’s supposed to be our leader, left us and went to the moon for four years and he stayed on our father’s side, even though he treated us like shit. Allison used her powers on her daughter to make her do what she wanted. Klaus is a drug addicted. Five is an asshole and an assassin who killed a lot of people in the future. He’s older than all of us, but when he returned he was stuck in his younger self body. Vanya has always been isolated from us and I, I’m a vigilante. So, you see I was afraid to tell you, because I thought you’d leave me if you knew the truth” he expressed.
“I- I just wish that you’ve told me. I would’ve understood you better and maybe helped you. I honestly don’t know what to do”.
“Just don’t break up with me please! We’ll figure this out together. Just give me another chance, I promise I won’t let you down this time”.
“Okay, I hope you’re right”.
Diego pulled you closer to him and gave you a tight hug.
“So, does this mean you’re staying with us?” Klaus asked.
“How long have you been standing there?”.
“Long enough to witness everything”.

oh NO that oh jackie post made me think of how i kept thinking the the reason diego wanted to stop jfk from getting shot so badly was bc there was 👀 someone else 👀 who got shot that he couldn't save. then i realized it was just a hero complex but it still hurts!
real talk anon, the whole jfk thing could have had so much potential as an actual plot device and means for character development (and also ,, yk,, not just proving that eudora patch was no more than a vehicle for diego's character development that they were willing to fridge as soon as they had gotten what they needed out of her) and not a half assed attempt at comic relief. was it even supposed to have been comic relief?? idk.
it could have been so much more than just a hero complex!!! imagine if diego 'saving lives, baby' hargreeves had had a motive, a reason for wanting to save someone's life other than just trying to prove something to himself. he was given all of a few days to grieve her death before the apocalypse. he'd spent, what? two months? three months at most in the sixties and suddenly he'd fast tracked through the seven stages of grief and barely even remembered her name? his entire arc in season one was driven by honouring somebody he loved. they really gave us an awesome, badass, righteous woc and killed her off for her ex boyfriend's character arc, one that he wouldn't even remember going through in season two. ashley madekwe (jokingly) commented on david castaneda's post of him and ritu arya "did you even mourn me?" but honestly!! he didn't even mourn her.
we really could have had it all. season two could have been so much more consistent if it had featured characters other than allison and klaus taking action based off of character development that stemmed from their season one arcs. imagine diego in season two still grieving eudora and reeling from survivors guilt, wanting to save jfk so fucking badly because he was reminded of someone else he couldn't save, someone who had people who loved them too, someone who didn't deserve to die, someone who wanted to do good in the world but just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
this is one of the reasons why i honestly believe lila was just a rebound, because realistically he could not have gotten over eudora so quickly. the scene with cha cha was not closure. he was heartbroken, he was torn between vengeance and what was right, and he couldn't dwell on his decision not to kill her too much because it was the literal fucking apocalypse. diego/jackie could have been such a powerful parallel because diego knew what it was like to lose someone you loved to circumstance, and he wanted to save someone else from that type of pain and maybe, just maybe, put his own conscience to rest while he was at it.

Everything Wrong With The Umbrella Academy. Episode 1, We Only See Each Other At Weddings and Funerals.
Some context before the cut: This is all in good fun! I wanted to do a really nitpicky re-watch of the series and found some really cool and interesting things I didn’t notice before. This is meant to have a Cinema Sins-esque tone. However, I did take off a lot more sins than Cinema Sins would have because I do genuinely like the series and the people that made it possible. So all of the good things got one sin off and all the bad things got one sin added. This is a really long post, so grab some popcorn. If there’s anything that I missed, feel free to add it!
We Only See Each Other At Weddings And Funerals
The story opens with a random scene. I know why this is important now, but for a first time viewer this is a strange Russian show with no subtitles. Sin for the fact that this opening scene could drive away audiences when they could have opened with Pogo’s monologue or the sudden birth scene. +1
Sudden birth. I know that this is what starts the whole series, but not once do these assholes discuss the implications of sudden birth. That shit is traumatic and must have induced a lot of trauma in the mothers. Sinning for trauma. +1
The russian ladies all help this poor girl. Teamwork and togetherness gets a sin off. -1
How did they get her swimsuit off enough for her to give birth without just taking the whole thing off? Did one woman happen to have a pair of scissors on her so they could cut the crotch? Because one piece suits are not that flexible downstairs. They didn’t take it off her, it’s still covering her. Sinning for lack of realism or explanation. +1
This narration should have happened much sooner. +1
Buying children. Literally buying children. And he gets seven so he buys them wholesale. Seven sins because Sir Reginald Hargreeves is a dick that bought seven children. +7
One sin off for the soundtrack now. All the songs used in this show are bops! -1
Ellen Page starts playing the Lindsey Stirling Phantom of the Opera piece on the lowest string when the piece starts on a high note. One sin for lack of musicality. +1
Minus one sin for Ellen Page’s vibrato. Not many people pretending to play the violin get that so accurate. That or this was the talented body double. Either way one sin off for musicality. -1
“Please send more food” Reginald Hargreeves is a dick to his adopted children. He didn’t feed Luther enough, so who knows what he did to the ones he didn’t like as much. +7
Also, Luther has presumably spent four years in this base on the moon. Did he hit his head every morning? You would think that he would learn to duck. +1
One sin off for the moon plant. -1
I’m taking 10 sins off for the special effects of this entire series. -10
That car transition between Diego’s and Allison’s entrances was out of place. I know it’s meant to show that Allison is far away from the action. But did we really need that? It’s not shown when transitioning from the red carpet to Klaus in rehab. +1
What is keeping the lawnchair that Luther has on the moon down? It looks lightweight. Does he have it nailed to the moon? Is there now a lawnchair on the moon forever? +1
Tom Hopper is an excellent actor. He nailed the “just got the news that my father is dead” without saying a single word. -1
Diego doesn’t bother to untie the family he saves. He caused property damage and severely injured the thugs that broke in. No wonder Patch has a problem with him being a vigilante. +1
“Allison, will you wear Valentino to the funeral” +1
One sin off because Robert Sheehan has already won my heart as Klaus and he hasn’t said a single word yet. And for the little jig he does when he gets the drugs. Interesting choice, but I like it. I could be biased because I’ve watched the series already, but I don’t care. One sin off for Robert Sheehan. -1
Why was Vanya allowed to be playing to this empty theatre with spotlights on her? Does she have an arrangement with maintenance? Is that why the orchestra isn’t set up? +1
One sin off for the Hargreeves mansion. The set designers did an amazing job.-1
Creepy shrine portrait of Five is creepy and somehow manages to not look like Aidan Gallager. This could be a stylistic choice to show that Reggie didn’t care about Five, in which case, another sin for child abuse. +1
Creepy statue of Ben is creepy. And it doesn’t look like Justin Min or Ethan Hwang. Who is this statue honoring? +1
It has been stated that Ben’s death broke up the academy. Yet, the other four assholes stuck around for one more portrait after his death? +1
Vanya doesn’t close the doors behind her when she walks into the mansion. +1
Diego’s outfit is central to introducing his character. However, it is dumb as hell and he probably stabbed himself with the knives in the harness multiple times. Especially the ones on his back. +1
Diego is a dick to Vanya at their father's funeral. I know Reggie was a jackass, but Jesus Christ, Diego. Have some tact. I know this is meant to show that Diego doesn’t have any tact, but this is such a severe line. +1
In the first shot of Reggie’s bedroom there are 6 freaking lamps. What is he, Bella Swan? And later, there are three more. +1
David Castaneda really brings Diego to life with his interaction with Luther in Reggie's bedroom. -1
I know I already took sins off for the special effects, but Pogo deserves another two off. Special Effects team, you did good. -2
“How long has it been since Five dissapered” is the most obvious bit of exposition/foreshadowing. To the point where it reads lazy. Another option would be Vanya asking “How long has it been since” and trailing off from there. Pogo knows what happened. This is a crucial reveal, let the audience wait for it a bit. +1
One sin off for Vanya being a good sister to Five. Fluffernutter sandwiches and leaving the lights on is heartwarming.  -1
Props to these child actors for being able to portray the way Reggie treats them and how that affects their emotions in the scene where they wanted to say goodnight to Reggie. -1
However, Reginald Hargreeves is a dick to his adopted children. I will keep sinning this. +7
After Reggie shuns and ignores his children, Luther’s hand on Ben’s shoulder is a subtle way to show that Luther and Ben were sort of close, which is what an excerpt from Vanya’s book implies in the comics. Good job directors or actors for making that choice! -1
Robert Sheehan in the office scene. This is where we meet Klaus as an audience for the first time with dialogue, and he fucking nails it.  -1
“Thank God he’s not our real father so we couldn’t inherit those cold dead eyes! Ahh! Number Threee-” The delivery on that line is excellent. -1
Klaus’s dangly necklace that looks kind of like dog tags foreshadowing the real dog tags he wears later on in the show. -1
No way in hell Klaus’s skimpy outfit provided enough concealment for that massive box. In fact, in the shots we do see of his back, we should have seen the outline of the box. +1
Sir Reginald Hargreeves is as obsessed with lamps as he is with collecting children. His office is full of them! +1
“Do you think he wears that thing in the bathroom” “Like in the shower” “Yes, absolutely” Allison and Luther have some good interactions. This is where they really act like siblings making fun of another sibling. -1
A woman who told bedtime stories to her kid about her uncle on the moon forgets that said uncle has been on the moon and judges him when he doesn’t know about her divorce.+1
“Rumor thing” Way to be specific, Luther. +1
Allison’s expression at the family meeting when she takes a sip of her drink. Emmy Raver-Lampman is what makes this character likeable. -1
Reginald Hargreeves was a dick to his children. The whole favorite spot thing? Yeah that. Golden child abuse victim. +7
Sir Reginald playing tennis with Hitler line. -1
Luther accuses his siblings of killing their father. Have some tact man, not at the funeral. This makes sense for the character and his circumstances, but I am still sinning it because Luther doesn’t think he did anything wrong. +1
I feel kind of bad for Luther after his siblings leave the room. Great acting on Tom Hopper’s part. -1
How did Allison get into the bank? +1
Luther straight up throws this man out of a building! That guy is 100% dead. And then he admonishes Five for being a killer later! +1
“Guns are for sissies, real men throw knives!” is a line that would only be spoken by a twelve year old that has never faced the judgement of people he isn’t related to. Also, Diego practiced this line in front of a mirror. +1
But that throw was badass, so... -1
Also, how did Klaus, Diego, Five, and Ben get into the bank as well? We only see Luther enter. And presumably Five teleported in. So were the rest already in there? +1
Five manages to jump faster than a bullet here, but in episode two he’s a lot slower when jumping from one side of the table to the other. You could make the argument that the table is in the way, but there was a human being and a bullet in the way here. +1
“Woah! That’s one badass stapler!” This is the first sin off because Aidan Gallagher can act, and it will not be the last. For all his grumpy 58 year old man, he also manages to shine while playing a young version of said grumpy 58 year old man. You would think that one or the other would be a little weak, but no he nails both performances. -1
But, how did Five switch the gun and the stapler? And why do we never see him do this again with more useful items like a briefcase or one of the machine guns used by the local commission hires? Can he only switch items with a similar mass? How does this power work? +1
Luther is the one that tells Ben that there's more guys in the vault to kill. Not Klaus who could have been like “a ghost said there's more guys in the vault”. What exactly did Klaus do on missions? He isn’t shown helping the hostages or fighting in any way. +1
“I didn’t sign up for this.” yeah Ben, like it’s a summer camp and not your abusive father buying you as an infant and then forcing you to kill people. +1
Kenny’s mom appearance. Also, the woman mixes leopard print leggings, a black dress, a square pattern cardigan, and a hat with stripes and a pom-pom. +1
“Can we go home now” Ethan Hwang had great delivery on that line. -1
Sir Reginald Hargreeves is a dick to his children. He forces 6 of them to kill, and then makes it seem like it’s all fun and games to the one he isolates. +7
When did they get coats and scarves? Did Reggie bring them coats and scarves while coming down to address the crowd? +1
Also, Reggie was on the roof of a different building with vanya! What did the kids do while they were waiting for him? Stand around and look pretty? Not likely, Ben was covered in blood. +1
Also, when did Ben have time to clean up? He is significantly less bloody in the scene where Reggie talks to the press. Yet his mask, uniform, and a bit of his jaw still have blood. This suggests he had time to wipe down. What kind of magic wipes are these that soak up and remove blood quickly and where can I get them? +1
The way the children wear their scarves show their personality. Luther has it done properly, Diego has his flapping around, Allison and Klaus have tied it fashionably, Five has it done well, but not as proper, and Ben has it done like Luthers. Well done costume people or actors who made that character choice. -1
The entire scene when Klaus attempts to summon Reggie from the afterlife. -4
I forgot that Klaus actually calls him Reggie in this scene. I thought it was just a fandom thing lmao. -1
How did Klaus clean up the ashes without leaving evidence on the bar? Did he vacuum it? +1
The cutesy fighting posters are a great set design choice. -1
Allison had her trauma tattoo refreshed at some point. It’s faded on Klaus, but on her it’s perfectly visible and stark. I’m sinning because they don’t show or tell why Allison might want to do this. +1
Also, that guitar Klaus was cuddling in a later scene, was just in the kitchen for some reason. Why? +1
Five and Ben are not part of the I Think We’re Alone Now dance party. I know it’s for plot, but come on! They don’t even have another dance party later to make up for this. +1
Diego and Vanya totally saw each other when Diego went to close the door between the foyer and the living area. +1
Luther and Vanya’s dance moves. No hate on either though because I dance like them if it isn’t swing or any other partnered dance +1
Diego, Klaus, and Allison’s dance moves. -1
Also, the song is heard all the way in the kitchen. There is no soundproofing in this mansion. +1
Luther punching down the airplane is funny. -1
David Castaneda doing those amazing dance moves in character. -1
Oh hello Five. Nice of you to show up and kickstart the plot into being something other than washed up superheroes are really sad and abused. +1
“Daddy!” -1
Why were Five’s powers affecting random objects? +1
Klaus is the only one with self preservation. “I vote for running” +1
“Does anyone else see little Number Five, or is that just me” is a great line because Klaus can see the dead. However, the dead don’t show up in massive portals, otherwise something like that would have happened when we see Dave in The Day That Wasn’t. +1
Five asks for an exact date and then Vanya gives him “the 24th” real specific, Vanya +1
Five doesn’t close the fridge properly because that doesn’t matter in the apocalypse -1
“In the end I had to project my consciousness forward into a suspended quantum state version of myself that exists across every possible instance of time” “That makes no sense” “well it would if you were smarter” the mark of someone being smart is being able to explain concepts like this in layman's terms. If Five were as smart as he said he was, then he could have been able to come up with an analogy. That or the showmakers have no clue what they’re talking about and wrote a bunch of science-y bullshit to make Five sound smart. +1
Diego was ready to throw hands with Five, someone who looks thirteen and was thirteen until Five explained otherwise. +1
“Dolores kept saying the equations were off” so in other words, Five knew that his equations were off, but he still risked it. +1
But also, Five knew his equations were off, but he was so desperate to see his family that he risked it anyway. -1
Nations Gazette paper has articles that look like they’re actually about the headline. -1
“What part of the future do you not understand.” -1
Aidan Gallagher’s delivery in that scene really set the tone for his character. Impressive. -1
Five decides to dress in the full on school boy getup. Complete with the tie and the blazer when those items aren’t necessary. +1
Aidan Gallagher and Ellen Page are two kick ass actors. They play off each other surprisingly well. -1
“You mean like what happened to Ben” “Was it bad?” What happened to Ben? This remains a sin until they explain it. +1
“May the darkness within you find peace in the light” that sounds really bad. What a horrible thing to have on your statue. +1
Jordan Claire Robbins’s performance of Grace -1
Luther and Diego are so emo that they don't need umbrellas. You’re in The Umbrella Academy! This had to be a personal choice to not carry one. +1
Klaus’s face when Luther dumps out the ashes. -1
The camera cuts to Five when Diego says that Mom gave them actual names. -1
The fight between Luther and Diego is stupid. +1
Klaus and Five fight over who is going to protect who. +1
“Stop it!” “Hit him! Hit him!” -1
The detail on Ben’s statue. It shows his toe and knee have been touched many times by people who presumably miss him and love him. -1
Luther punches Ben’s statue in the crotch, which makes Klaus’s face 10x funnier once you remember that Ben was probably there too. -1
Luther punches Ben’s statue in the crotch and beheads it, suggesting that Luther had something to do with Ben’s death. -1
Luther punches Ben’s statue in the crotch. +1
Klaus puts his cigarette out in reggie’s ashes. -1
Reggie narration +1
Reggie is a dick to his kids +7
The stupid, bright green jumpsuits +6
What is the point of this exercise? How does running up the stairs make them better heroes? +1
Young Diego either practiced “That’s not fair, Five’s cheating” or his stutter is only there when the plot calls for it. +1
Child Abuse tattoos +12
The fact that Vanya feels left out because she didn’t get a child abuse tattoo. Reggie, you fucked up these kids real bad. +2
We think that Reggie is comforting Luther after he got a child abuse tattoo, but no, he’s actually just attaching monitors to his head. +1
Reginald Hargreeves likes to watch young children sleep. +7
Vanya foreshadowing. Her monitor showing more activity then the cut to her taking one of the pills is brilliant. -1
Vanya still doesn’t close the academy door behind her when she leaves. +1
“An entire square block, 42 bedrooms 19 bathrooms” Five are you a real-estate agent now? +1
“Dad hated children too, but he had plenty of us!” Klaus would be excellent at cinema sins. Seven more for child abuse +7
What are the rules to Five’s jumps? We only really see him jump to places he can see unless he is time traveling or in the instance where he jumps to the car. Speaking of, the car had the keys in it. Reggie, are you trying to get it stolen  +1
Diego is a dick to Allison about her divorce. +1
Klaus and Diego’s interactions make me happy. -1
The Klaus theme is a wonderful piece of music. -1
Robert Sheehan making David Castaneda laugh. -1
We get our first glimpse of Luther’s arm here. It’s super weird and vague and only teases the reveal. This is where the ape reveal should have been for the audience and where it would have made sense. Doing the reveal in a later episode is weird. +1
Five doesn’t know how to break correctly, which contradicts “I know how to do everything” +1
Something I just noticed, Five completed the uniform not only with the tie and blazer, but with the hair gel too. +1
The towing guy chooses to sit next to Five at an empty counter. +1
Five looks so offended when Agnes refers to him as “the kid” -1
The creepy smile Five pulls in an attempt to look innocent doesn’t make Agnes scream in terror. Seriously Aidan Gallagher, what the fuck was that that was absoulutely terrifying. +1
+1
Five attempts to relate to a man that looks the age that he should be, but it ends up exceedingly awkward because Five looks 13. +1
The tow truck driver helps him out, but how was Five going to pay for his coffee? We don’t see him with money. Was he just going to jump out to the car? +1
Five never gets his cup of coffee :( +1
“Istanbul was Constantinople/ Now it’s Istanbul not Constantinople”. This whole scene is great. Five plays with them like he did in the bank scene which shows that even if he did age, he didn’t do it around people so he doesn’t have maturity. -1
Five stabs a guy with a mop and kills him. -1
Five stabs a guy in the crotch with a pencil, then uses the same pencil to stab him in the eye. In between he throws a plate at another guy. This is badass. -1
Five jumps in a way that actually does make two of the idiots shoot each other. Which means that technically, Patch was right. -1
Five kills a man with his bare hands. -1
But he stops to put his fucking tie back on. +1
And yet after all that, the goriest thing is when Five pulls the tracker out of his arm.  Props to the makeup department  and Aidan Gallagher’s acting skill for making that look so real. -1
Five should be way sweatier when he walks out of Griddys. Unless he moped that up with some napkins? What are these super absorbent napkins and where can I buy them? +1
Agnes should be far more traumatized. And definitely shouldn’t have survived that. +1
Diego is emo with the monocle. +1
Luther flashback narration. +1
Klaus, thankfully interrupts this. -1
“Number 6 “Ben” (deceased)” -1
We can see Ben depending on if it’s Klaus or Diego talking. -1
The vigilante mask Diego wears +1
Five jumpscare in Vanya’s apartment. +1
“Rapists can climb” yes Five. Continue with the criminals that can climb. Including you. +1
This whole scene is the best ending to an episode in the entire season. -1
Aidan Gallagher and Ellen Page play off each other with subtle expressions. This acting talent is amazing. -2
“The world ends in eight days and I have no idea how to stop it” “I’ll put on a pot of coffee” roll credits. I love this ending for many reasons. It’s a total mic drop moment. -2
Overall review:
While actively looking for nitpicky things, I got to see the first in a whole new light. Both the great parts and terrible parts stood out in a way that they didn’t when I wasn’t looking for them. Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and Ellen Page were the stand out actors in this episode. All three contributed something significant that didn’t heavily rely on the script writers.
The child cast also really stood out to me. All seven of them had very limited screen time (I am counting Gallagher playing a child version of his character in this assessment) and they absolutely made the best of it. Out of all of them, Ethan Hwang stood out to me because of his overall great delivery. I hope that we see him play Ben in a more in-depth way in season 2.
Don’t get it twisted, I genuinely like this series and I think that it tells a great story. I just think it’s fun to nitpick and look deeper. After over analyzing everything else, it’s time to get back to basics. Especially because the season 2 trailer could drop any day now.
Total: 82 sins
Sentence: Tennis with Hitler and Sir Reginald.

Good Choice
Diego Hargreeves (The Umbrella Academy) One-Shot
A/N: I received an Anon request for a Diego a story with the dialogue prompt: “I don’t want anyone besides you.”
After winning his boxing match, you are left feeling a little jealous as he is flocked by his adoring (and beautiful) fans.
Warnings: None really. It’s spoiler free and no swears even.
If you want to be on my tag lists, (all or just a character) just let me know! (Pic from David Castaneda’s Instagram...pretend there’s a scar? haha)
Tumblr media
Sitting on the edge of the empty boxing ring, you kept your focus on your phone, endlessly scrolling but not really paying attention. Despite where you forcefully kept your gaze, your attention was actually on Diego, who was surrounded by a group of fans. Who all happened to be women. Beautiful women.
When Diego first invited you to the match, he asked you to stick around after even though it would be a bit of a wait for him to get showered up. You hadn't been dating long, but the wait didn't faze you.
Seeing him surrounded by the women who were spending an awfully long time congratulating him on his win? That fazed you a bit.
But, you kept a smile on your face and stayed out of the way. It wasn't your job to chase them away and the last thing you wanted to do was cramp on his boxing career. Even though, ever since he strolled out in his track pants and tight, white undershirt, all you wanted was to lead him right back to his room and privately congratulate him yourself.
You stayed so focused that you didn't notice when you were approached.
“You just going to sit here all night?” Diego tilted his head as a faint grin played on his lips.
Setting your phone down, you smiled, hoping it was sincere. “No, I was just staying out of the way. Was there something I'm supposed to be doing?”
“Well yeah, obviously you're supposed to be telling me how great I am.” He couldn't stop the grin from growing.
Looking past him, you were a little surprised the group of girls were still there, now joined by a few guys who had also stuck around. They chatted to each other, sneaking glances your direction. “I don't know. It looked like they were already doing a good job of that.”
“Are you kidding? I kept waiting for you to rescue me and you just sat over here, looking amazing and ignoring me.” As he spoke, he leaned forward, planting one hand on either side of you.
Rolling your eyes, you pressed your lips together to stop from smiling. “Rescue you? From your fans?”
Inching closer, his eyes kept darting to your mouth as a droplet of water fell from his damp hair. “Like I'm Mikey Garcia or something? Nah. They're not fans.”
Tilting his head, he finally picked up on your tone. “Wait, are you jealous? Is that why you’re sitting over here?”
“No…should I be?” Inwardly, you cringed at just how defensively it came out.
Settling into a deeper lean against the ring, he moved close enough for you to catch the fresh scent of his body wash. He didn’t attempt to hide his gaze as it trailed down over your body. Just his stare was enough to set you on fire, burning away your moment of jealousy.
Your breath quickened as he moved in to softly growl by your ear. “No. I don’t want anyone but you.”
“Well, then you’re in luck,” you said, looking up at him through your eyelashes.
His tongue darted out, wetting his lips as he traced his eyes back up to yours. “And I do…want you.”
Letting his lips lightly brush over yours as he spoke, his hands drifted onto your legs, firmly gripping behind the knee. With a quick jerk, he pulled you to the edge of the mat with your legs on either side of his hips. You let out a gasp against his lips as he pulled away and slowly opened his eyes. “Now.”
Sitting back, you glanced around, suddenly feeling self-conscious of the others still there.
Reaching over, he gently cupped your cheek to bring your attention back on him as he smirked. Leaning in, he nudged his nose against your jaw and spoke against your ear, sending shivers down your body. “So, we can either go down to my room, right now, or we can put on a show right here.”
“Let’s go,” you managed to get out in a soft pant.
Slipping his arm around your waist, he easily pulled you off the ring. Keeping you close, with his arm wrapped tightly around your hips, he smiled. “Good choice.”

#SelfiesForCastaneda
Story Summary:  You’ve just finished watching The Umbrella Academy on Netflix. You follow the main cast on Twitter and get a Retweet from David Castaneda on your selfie! This prompts a conversation with you two. You hit it off and set a date.
Chapter: 1/1
Word Count: 2,420
Pairing: David Castaneda x Reader
Warnings: Anxious thoughts
It’s a rainy Friday night. Normally you’d go out with friends or go out to downtown Toronto. Because it was raining and you were exhausted from work though, you decided to veg out and finish watching the Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy. You were comfortable in your warm home, laid down on your plushy couch, with a fuzzy blanket covering you, and you were in your sweatpants and loose white t-shirt.
You forgot about this comfort once you were so stunned by the series finale of The Umbrella Academy. You could not wait for season 2. You also got attached to the characters and you loved Ellen Page and Robert Sheehan more than you already did before; back when you saw the movie Juno, and back when you watched the show Misfits. You thought Emmy Raver-Lampman was so pretty and seemingly sweet in real life. Your bisexual ass could not get over this. You hit the Follow button in Twitter for Ellen, Robert, and Emmy. The character Luther was your least favourite one, though you thought to get to know the actor for him, Tom Hopper, from interviews, and to Follow him on Twitter too. Justin H. Min was so handsome and so vulnerable as Ben. Aidan Gallagher was just a kid and did an amazing job playing an old man trapped in the body of a 12 year old. And last but not least, there was David Castaneda. He is the most handsome one to you. As Diego, he was so resentful. It didn’t make sense to you because all the siblings went through childhood trauma, from the same man who adopted them all. He was also spiteful towards a former lover, Detective Patch (who your gay ass also found attractive. That’s a story for another time). Still, there was something about Diego, or David, that made you feel good things.
You smile as you hit the Follow button on David. You have followed all the main cast of The Umbrella Academy, along with Mary J. Blige, who is just an icon. You also followed Gerard Way, who created the show and was the singer of the brilliant band My Chemical Romance.
You spend the rest of your evening lurking everyone you just followed. It feels good to be in love with something again.
As you lurk David and his Likes, you see a bunch of fan’s selfies he liked. Every selfie has the hashtag #SelfiesForCasataneda You’re intrigued by this. You wonder if he started this hashtag, or if some fans did. You are also pleased that he interacts with fans. He’s still at the level of fame where he can see fans in his notifications over being blinded by the plenty of Likes, Retweets, and Replies he gets.
This motivates you to get off the couch and to take a shower. As you take a shower, you think of an outfit idea for this selfie you’re thinking of posting. You’ll wear all black; the tight black turtleneck you bought a while ago and have worn plenty of times already, the baggy black jacket you’ve copped from your older sister, and black jeans. It was a Diego-esque outfit. You didn’t have to cosplay. You just always dress like this anyway, and you were the most confident in it.
After your shower, you slip into the outfit, put on some concealer, black winged eyeliner, and red lipstick. You snap some shots from the camera on your phone. You try out a bunch of angles. You scoff at some selfies and think there’s no way he’ll Like any of these. Well, he could, since he seemed like a support Liker to fans. You still wanted to dress to impress if he was going to actually see this selfie!
You beam up once you get another idea. You run to your kitchen to pick up 2 kitchen knives. You are aware of how funny this could look. You like to think that you’re a creative person, or so you decide to go the positive route of thinking.
You get the knives and put a self timer on from the camera of your phone. You criss-cross your arms, with a knife in each hand, and take the shot. Your phone took 3 shots, so there’s a chance of a good one. There is a good one indeed. Your face was lighted perfectly in this certain one. There was a glow. Your hair looked great too. You love the shape of your body as well.
You post the photo, and put in the hash tag, #SelfiesForCastaneda You press ‘Tweet’. At this point, you don’t care if no one would Like the selfie. You are just feelin’ your look!
Fortunately, you do get some Likes; a few were David Castaneda fan accounts, one from a supportive mutual, and a few others were from other fans of The Umbrella Academy. You Like everyone else’s most recent tweets and selfies back.
Then there is a Retweet. You beam up and think maybe it’s from one of the Likers. You view the Retweet and it’s from… @DavidCastanedaJ You think it’s another fan account, until you remember following this account earlier, and you notice the blue checkmark next to the username, which indicates that this is an official and verified celebrity account. Your heart is racing. What the fuck! you think. You check his account and think that maybe his support Liking evolved to support Retweeting. There is no other Retweet with the hashtag #SelfiesForCastaneda on his account though.
You leave your phone alone for 2 hours after your tweet gets more Likes and Retweets from other David fans. You even notice some haters in the thread. Luckily there are only a few haters. Everyone else says that your photo is bad-ass.
You’re not usually one for bragging. This is a very cool moment though, so you retweet David’s Retweet of your selfie, and you caption it with, 'Uhmmm… did David Castaneda just retweet my selfie!? Diego frickn Hargreeves!?“
You look at the time on your phone. It’s 1:30am! You’re usually a night owl. Somehow though, you were tired. You did sleep very little before you went to work, and you commuted in the rain. Being cozy and watching Netflix had to contribute to that tiredness as well. So, you snuggle up in your warm bed, which also has a fuzzy blanket, and sleep.
10:43am. You wake up naturally and pick up your phone which was laid on top of some pile of clothes you left on your floor beside your bed. You check your Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr. Finally, you check your Twitter to check on the selfie. You also see an Inbox notification. You wonder who that could be from. People don’t normally message you on Twitter. You open the inbox and in the preview, it’s @DavidCastanedaJ ! You can’t believe it. What could he possibly have to say to you? Your heart is racing.
What if he says that the retweet was an accident? Would he have had to message you that though? He could have deleted the Retweet if it was an accident. You would have understood that he didn’t mean to Retweet one fan’s selfie randomly.
You take a deep breath before opening the message to quit your overthinking and your doubts.
@DavidCastanedaJ: It’s a good selfie. I had to retweet it.
After lurking his Twitter last night, you notice that he’s got a dry and sarcastic tone. You’re unsure of what to respond to him with, or if you should even respond. Well, of course you should respond. He felt compelled to say something to you personally instead of being funny and fishing for Likes. Well, that’s speaking for if he’s not being sarcastic.
You tap your chin and wonder if you should screenshot this to your close friends, especially your sister who got you to watch the show and dealt with you ogling over him. You shake your head out of this and think that it’s best to reply to him ASAP. He sent his text around 6am. You’re not sure why he sent it that early. He’s in Toronto, a city not too far from yours. He’s not shooting a show, as far as you knew. There isn’t even an announcement of a season 2 for The Umbrella Academy yet.
You quit your overthinking again, and decide to reply with this:
[@YourUsername]: A good selfie how? Like, in what sense?
You take another deep breath and chuck your phone on the spot next to you on your bed. You get up from the bed and decide to leave your phone alone and try to think of something productive to do on your day off. Before you can do that, your phone buzzes. You beam up, and rush back over to your bed, which you sit on your knees for.
Twitter Notification: Preview of @DavidCastanedaJ Inbox message
@DavidCastanedaJ: Idk
@DavidCastanedaJ: I like your Diego get-up, and you’re aesthically pleasing
Your heart is skipping beats. What does he mean by aesthetically pleasing!? Is he implying that you’re attractive? Are you even his type in looks? Do you resemble Detective Patch? Are actors attracted to the type of people who play their love interests? Well it was the only reference you have for this emerging and handsome actor.
You’re in your 20s, and he’s 29. You still have a baby face and wonder if he thinks you look younger than you actually are. Why would he retweet your selfie though?
[@YourUsername]: Aesthetically pleasing? This face?
You hold your phone and stare at the thread. Maybe he’s online if he replied to your last text just seconds after it. Much to your surprise, there’s a blue checkmark which indicates that he read it. Maybe he’s just thinking of what to say. Or maybe you’re a suggestive creep! Wait, how could you be if he was the one who retweeted your selfie!? God, you really had to quit that. Stop letting it get to your head!
The thread shows a new bubble, from him.
@DavidCastanedaJ: Haha
@DavidCastanedaJ: Yes, this face
@DavidCastanedaJ: It’s a great face. What’s your secret?
You are now blushing and still manage to type.
[@YourUsername]: I did sleep 9 hours last night. You know what they say about 9 hours of sleep.
@DavidCastanedaJ: Yeah, that’s lucky
You are easing into this now, though you are also wondering if you should be careful, or if you’re just dreaming and didn’t actually wake up earlier than you usually do.
[@YourUsername]: I’m guessing you don’t have that luxury?
@DavidCastanedaJ: Well, maybe now I can sleep that much
@DavidCastanedaJ: Back when we were shooting the Umbrella Academy though, I was a mess!
[@YourUsername]: You seem so healthy
[@YourUsername]: At least with that body, you do…
David seems to like that response. You spend Saturday afternoon texting each other, and it’s still surreal to you that this is happening, much less how you two seem so connected.
A few hours later.
@DavidCastanedaJ: So, you said you’re in Toronto, right?
[@YourUsername]: Well, I’m in a city *near* Toronto, about a half hour away
@DavidCastanedaJ: Oh I see
[@YourUsername]: I’m there often anyway. I mostly go see local bands, and take their photos
@DavidCastanedaJ: Right. I remember you saying that earlier
You’re unsure of how this conversation could last at this point. You take a chance with a one-word response anyway.
[@YourUsername]: Yep!
@DavidCastanedaJ: How would you feel about coming to Toronto tonight? I thought maybe we could have dinner, and I could show you real Diego Hargreeves gear…
Your heart is racing again! In fact, you think that you’re going to shit your pants. You decide to have some banter with him to cover up your fangirling.
[@YourUsername]: "Real Diego Hargreeves gear.”
[@YourUsername]: Is that a sexual innuendo?
@DavidCastanedaJ: It is if you want it to be ;)
[@YourUsername]: Omg
@DavidCastanedaJ: I realize that did sound pretty sketchy, so sorry about that
[@YourUsername]: No, it’s totally fine! I was just teasing :)
[@YourUsername]: I would love to come to downtown tonight! When are you free?
@DavidCastanedaJ: Well, seeing as I’ve been texting a very beautiful girl all afternoon, I’d say my schedule is pretty flexible
[@YourUsername]: Really? Are you sure that Gerard Way isn’t barking at you to get back on set for season 2 as we speak?
@DavidCastanedaJ: Ahahah yeah totally
@DavidCastanedaJ: I’d tell him to wait though. I should get to spend my free time with someone cool first
From there, you hash out the details for the plans; what time, and where to meet. You both also decide to get a drink at Brooklynn Bar. You’re not much of a drinker, though for a celebrity like him you made an exception.
You decide to wear “the Diego get-up”, this time you style your hair, wear darker red lipstick, the same black eyeliner, and you sling a small black cross-body bag over your shoulder.
David texts you with his name. Then he tells you to keep him posted on your whereabouts. You make your way to downtown and your meeting spot with him. You eye the area and look for him. You turn to some side, and you see him walking over. Your heart is skipping beats again, and you gasp.
He looks so handsome with his tan peacoat, black jeans, his gelled black hair, and beard and mustache.
He smiles knowingly and walks over to you. He gives you a hug.
You cannot believe that it is actually him. You realise in this moment that you could have been catfished. You weakly hug him back in your disbelief over this moment.
He pulls you in closer and you hug back tighter.
“Oh my God!” you exclaim.
He pulls out the hug and he looks over at you with a toothy smile on his face. “What?”
“It’s you. It’s really you! God, this is so embarrassing. I think that I’m actually starstruck.”
He chuckles. “This is gonna sound weird, but I thought I was being catfished.”
You give him a puzzled look, although you are so flattered. “I thought that I was an annoying type of fan you’re annoyed of attracting!”
“What!?” he laughs. “Okay, we haven’t even had a drink yet and we’re already confusing each other.”
You let out a laugh.
He gestures an arm to the entry door. “Shall we go in?”
“Yeah sure!”
He signals for you to walk in first, and so your date begins. Things can only get better from here.

The Umbrella Academy Review (Spoiler Free)
http://bit.ly/2UGi03k
Netflix's The Umbrella Academy is an admirable attempt to bring the comic to the small screen that ultimately misses the mark.
Books
This Umbrella Academy review does not contain spoilers.
Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba's The Umbrella Academy, which opens with the spontaneous birth of 43 superpowered babies right at the moment a wrestler elbow drops a giant space squid in the ring, might be unadaptable. Despite its best efforts to capture the delightful weirdness of the comic as well as expand on some of the storylines only hinted at in the book, the new Netflix series is ultimately too grounded and sluggish to really keep us invested. The series never quite finds its rhythm until the very end and is surprisingly dull throughout, especially in the first few exposition-heavy episodes.
The Umbrella Academy is the story of the Hargreeves orphans, a super-powered group of kids mysteriously born at the exact same time in different parts of the world, who are trained by their cold and manipulative adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, to save the world. Originally a famous superhero team of seven -- Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Number Five, Ben, and Vanya -- the family slowly begins to decay as the years go by. One sibling dies during a mission while Number Five capriciously travels far into the future against his father's wishes, never to be seen again. Most of the others eventually pack up and leave the Academy when they're old enough.
When the series begins, it's been 12 years since the team was together. But when Sir Reginald suddenly dies -- seemingly of natural causes, although Luther (Tom Hopper), the loyal leader of the team, is not so sure -- his adult children are forced into a nightmarish family reunion and back into old habits. As you would expect, things do not go well.
It should be said up front that viewers expecting an action-packed superhero romp or something akin to Netflix's Marvel lineup will be sorely disappointed. The Umbrella Academy is not that kind of show, trading in the action sequences (of which there are very few) for slightly long-winded family drama. Of course, this won't surprise fans of the Eisner-winning series, itself a deconstruction of iconic superhero teams such as the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and most importantly, DC's Doom Patrol, one of the comic's major influences. While the Netflix series does an admirable job of trying to captivate its audience with this particularly dysfunctional family of super-weirdos, it does so at the expense of its pacing. The Umbrella Academy is incredibly slow.
The show's biggest problem is that it tries to stretch the book's six-issue first volume, "Apocalypse Suite," into 10 50-minute episodes, with bits and pieces of the second arc, "Dallas," thrown in. It's clear two or three episodes in that the show doesn't have enough material to keep things moving to the end, so showrunner Steve Blackman (Altered Carbon) and writer Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four) crafted new storylines and expanded others while also remixing a few of the comic's character arcs. Unfortunately, these "bonus" scenes and new subplots rarely work. At times, they're actually detrimental to the characters.

This is largely the case for protagonist Vanya Hargreeves (Ellen Page), who is inexplicably thrust into an unnecessary romantic subplot. In the comics, Vanya is an outcast, neglected by the emotionally abusive Sir Reginald and sidelined by her narcissistic siblings. When her father dies, she's lonely and without a support system, harboring a quiet animosity towards her brothers and sisters, who are too busy dealing with their own drama to notice her. They've never let her in, even with her father removed from the equation. So when Vanya makes the choice to leave the family behind and go her own way, it's not really all that surprising.
The show, on the other hand, puts Vanya in an awkward relationship in order to flesh out another major player from the comics. The problem might be that the show never fully commits to the relationship, spoiling a big twist before we're ever really even invested in Vanya's love life. In the end, Vanya's story feels diluted by the additional subplot.
It's all in service of getting this show, which could have easily been two or three episodes shorter, to the finish line. Other annoying additions include a murder mystery surrounding Diego (David Castaneda), the family's robotic caretaker Mom (Jordan Claire Robbins), and their super-intelligent chimpanzee friend Pogo (Adam Godley); and an extended look at time-traveling assassins Cha-Cha (Mary J. Blige) and Hazel (Cameron Britton), who also falls victim to a strange romantic storyline. In the case of the murder mystery, the family members search for Sir Reginald's missing monocle -- which might provide evidence of foul play in connection to his death -- but it never really goes anywhere. To make matters worse, the show basically gives up on the yarn in the third act, giving the audience the answer with a few lines of exposition.
Meanwhile, troubled, drug-addicted Klaus (Robert Sheehan) gets much more screentime than comic fans might expect, and Sheehan is excellent in the role as if it were written for him. But too often, perhaps inspired by Sheehan's outrageous performance as Nathan Young in Misfits, the character is played for laughs. The result is a joke that begins to feel repetitive. Klaus is nowhere near this dim-witted in the comics. One thing that does work in Klaus' favor is his ability to communicate with the dead, which adds a horror element to the show. When Klaus learns to finally use this power to his advantage in the climactic battle, I absolutely cheered.

While all that's going on, knife-wielding Diego, the rogue of the family, also gets a love interest, and it's by far the least interesting love story of all. Why Blackman and Slater felt that the only way to explore many of these characters was through romance is beyond me. In Way and Ba's comic, introspection doesn't come from the romantic, but through the familial ties that bind. For example, in the comic, Diego has to figure out a way to work with Luther, an altruistic hero who is sort of incompetent at being the team's leader, and while at first Diego despises his brother, they end up growing together. In the third arc of the comic, it's Diego, a loner by nature, who has to convince a depressed Luther to get the team back together.
It's clear that everyone involved with this adaptation has real love for the comic, from the way it accurately recreates the young Umbrella Academy's costumes to the camera angles that recall the work of film auteur Wes Anderson, who is a clear influence on both the book and the show (you could almost imagine this as Anderson's very own take on the superhero genre, with all of the beautiful shots and retro zaniness). Blackman and his crew really took the time to make the show look and sound great -- one particular shot of helicopters flying over Vietnam comes to mind -- but it also feels like they don't fully understand what makes Way and Ba's fast-paced, minimalist, vignette-heavy family drama so effective.
Despite my complaints about Vanya's extended storyline, I'm happy to say that Page's performance as the timid and anxious main character of this family tragedy is top notch. She makes the best of every scene she's in, even when her romantic counterpart isn't quite up to the task. Page is subtle in scenes with her over-the-top siblings, layering in claustrophobic loneliness over her deep-seated anger at being the sister everyone always ignores. I loved watching Vanya absolutely lose her shit later in the season, and Page has already given us so much by that point that it's impossible not to sympathize with her character, even as she takes a dark turn that she may not be able to return from.
Number Five, played by Aidan Gallagher, who's spent most of his career on Nickelodeon kids shows, is also a highlight. Gallagher is well-cast and is able to convey the wisdom beyond his years necessary for the role of a 60-year-old hitman trapped inside the body of a 10-year-old (although he's slightly older than that on the show). He rarely cracks a smile as the self-serious Number Five, or partake in his family's childish shenanigans, but when he does let loose, it's entertaining and very funny.

This trigger-happy hero-turned-assassin is also one of the few characters who benefit from an expanded storyline. The show dives much deeper into Number Five's backstory, giving us colorful pieces of his backstory the comic never has. Along the way, we learn much more about the secret organization Number Five worked for before rejoining his family in the present day. His interactions with this faction of time-jumping assassins are among the best in the entire series. Here, the show doesn't rely on romance to flesh out a character and it's really refreshing.
Surprisingly, Luther and Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) get the least to do. While at the forefront of the comic, Luther takes a backseat to the characters the people behind the show are really enamored with, like Vanya, Klaus, Number Five, and Diego. On the show, Luther is a bit more bumbling and I had a hard time believing that any of these characters would actually follow him into battle, but there are some high points for him, too. His story is one of self-discovery, as he steps out from under his father's shadow for the first time (this is a man who's never had a drink or done a drug or rebelled against his dad), and it's in Luther's search for clarity as an independent adult for basically the first time that this character shines.
Allison is in the middle of losing a family, even as she regains another. "Hotel Oblivion," the current comic's third arc, begins to explore why Allison, who can alter reality at will by telling lies, has become alienated from her husband and daughter. The show expands on that, showing what created the rift, and it perfectly fits the character.
As the credits roll on an enjoyable final episode, it's hard to call Netflix's The Umbrella Academy a success, but like its troubled family of freaks, it's not a lost cause. There are parts of the series I really liked -- the latter half of Klaus' arc when he's given a bit more depth, a hilarious showdown involving an ice cream truck, and a character's complete infatuation with the torso of a mannequin -- that hint at a freshness that could set it apart from other superhero TV and movies. The Umbrella Academy is at its strongest when it commits to the weirder elements of its story and world, such as the aforementioned talking chimpanzee, and does itself a disservice by trying to ground its characters in needless romance and the menial. Like Vanya herself, there's potential here, the show just needs to go off the deep end first.

➜ BIO
Francisco was raised in a household with strict gender roles. He was their father's preferred child simply on the basis of being a boy. His twin sister, Rey, might have been jealous, and the pair teased one another as siblings did, but beneath it all, they were the best of friends, the kind of siblings that learned to shoot a gun together and only studied accounting because it would help with the family business. Everyone in the family knew you should never be short on a count, and you should always be able to quickly calculate when someone else was short, too. Those were the basics of being a Delgado and he and Rey often discussed how they were going to run things when their father stepped down or passed away. They wouldn’t be torn apart like other siblings, they swore. They wouldn’t fight over the family business and who got to be in control. They’d run it together, as a team.
Oh, how plans changed.
Nobody said no to Ricky Delgado. Rey argued with him on occasion but he was an intimidating man with little room for compassion in his life. He had a way of twisting words like knives. Rey wasn’t going to take over the business. Not in the way they had planned. She would help the family in another way, by helping bridge the fence between the two crime families. Francisco had never seen his sister cry as much as she did on the day she’d been told she had to marry the man their father had chosen for her. It wasn’t fair, she said, and Francisco had to agree, but it wasn’t his place to openly challenge his father’s wishes. He’d always been afraid to disagree with him, to be seen as disloyal or ‘weak’.
Francisco had been what people might call ‘soft’ as a kid. His father certainly had. It was always his sister who came to his aid, rather than the other way around. His family pushed him into sports to try and toughen him up but he never took to it, in spite of how often he tried to put on a brave face for his family. He wanted to take over the business. He just didn’t have a natural skill for it, so he kept his head down, observed, learned, and tried not to rock the boat too much. Not rocking the boat unfortunately meant not being able to do anything when Rey told him about what a rat bastard the man she was supposed to marry was, how he cheated on her and hurt her. He tried to tell her he was sorry and that it would work out, but when she called him a coward, he knew she was right. She’d always been the strong one.
He would have given almost anything to go back and change that decision, because when Rey’s fiance, Johnny Sabatano died under suspicious circumstances, Rey vanished and the tension between their two crime families was as bad as ever. Their father was convinced the Sabatinos had done something to her and the dead man's younger brother had had some choice words for the Delgados at the funeral, but nobody had any proof. They were always on the brink of war, waiting for someone to fire the first shot. When his father died, there was no concrete proof of foul play, so the situation remained much the same.
The organized crime life in New York isn’t an easy one and with the weight of his father’s small empire on his shoulders, it’s up to Francisco to be the man his family always wanted him to be. But heavy is the head that wears the crown, and after so many years, he can’t quite figure out how to step away from the toxic environment that ruined his family. He’s going through the motions, simply hoping for a way out.

just for tonight | diego hargreeves
pairing: diego hargreeves x reader
word count: 481
prompt: “how long has it been since you've slept?”
summary: diego desperately needs to sleep.
author’s note: I’ve been itching to write for The Umbrella Academy, and this Diego request came at the perfect time :)
Diego’s careful to keep his footsteps light as he slips into the bedroom, kicking off his leather suit in the corner and half-heartedly tossing his mask onto the bedside table.
It’s been a long night. A long week of nights, if he wants to be exact. Far too many long nights in a row and he’s craving your touch, the tips of fingers sliding around his waist, sliding through his hair. He should probably get it cut. He’d consider it, if he didn’t love the tugging and scraping of your nails in the strands so much.
But despite his best efforts, you awaken with a sigh, and he groans as he slips beneath the covers and between the sheets. “Sorry, love, didn’t mean to wake you up.”
“S’all good,” you whisper as his lips meet your forehead. “Was trying to stay awake for you anyway.”
“Baby, I’ve told you—”
“Diego, I’m always going to worry and stay awake for you. When you leave me for the night to hunt whatever criminal’s haunting the streets, I worry. When you return and lie awake for hours, I worry. I… I can’t keep doing this. Something’s gotta give.”
A pressed kiss to your palm and whispered apology aren’t enough this time.
“Diego… How long has it been since you’ve slept?” Your groggy voice whispers the question into existence, and you know you can’t snatch those words back.
Diego’s answering silence and averted eyes twist dread in your stomach. You don’t need to see the dark circles under his eyes, the marks on his body left behind by the leather suit, the crumpled mask on the bedside table to know it’s been a while. His sigh confirms the truth—it’s been a couple days. More than a couple days, if your own counting of sleepless nights with cold sheets and no one to hold is correct.
You trail your fingers up his jaw, over his cheek, and the skin is coarse with his five o’clock shadow. Index catching on his lips, tracing their shape as you cup Diego’s cheek, reaching for a kiss. He’s slow to respond, sliding his hand down your arm to intertwine your fingers with his.
You draw back with a kiss to his nose, giggling at his soft smile. “I love you.”
“Love you too.” His voice is gruff and heavy with exhaustion, tone matching his half-lidded eyes. With a final kiss to your forehead and muffled sigh into his pillow, Diego finally, finally falls asleep.
You watch him until his breathing evens out, until his arms lay open for you to crawl into. And his embrace is something you’ve missed, with the brush of his hair against your cheek and the soft exhales of air on your neck. He doesn’t have somewhere to be, with no more police communications to follow or villain to defeat. He’s all yours, just for tonight.

The sparks that shot out July 23 from that minor incident, California fire officials said, ignited what is now the sixth-most destructive wildfire in state history.
It caught residents by surprise
Ed Bledsoe lost his wife and their two great-grandchildren in the fire, all within 15 minutes.
The Shasta County resident had left home to see a doctor, unaware of the fire’s erratic movement. At the time, it had burned for three days, but away from his neighborhood.
While he was out, his wife, Melody Bledsoe, 70, called and told him the fire was getting closer to their home. She begged him to come get her and their great-grandchildren: Emily Roberts, 4, and James Roberts, 5.
James took the phone and pleaded with his great-grandfather to hurry up and save them.
“He just kept saying, ‘Grandpa, Come get me … come on, Grandpa,’ ” Ed Bledsoe said.
He dropped everything and rushed home. But the roads were congested and the heat and flames so intense, the area near his house was cordoned off. His wife and the two children were among the six people killed in the Carr Fire.
“I tried to call them back and it just went to nothing,” Bledsoe said as he wept. “Poor babies and my wife.”
The winds caused a tornado of fire
The day Bledsoe’s family died, the winds were so strong in Redding, they uprooted trees, ripped off roofs and downed power lines. Experts described it as a “firenado,” when a fire’s intense heat causes the air to heat up and rise rapidly. That, combined with strong winds, creates a vortex similar to a dust devil that pulls fires in different directions.
Redding resident Dominic Galvin said he and his wife did not think the fire would get that big so fast, and scrambled to get out at the last minute.
“When we saw the fire on the ridge … once we saw it there we knew it was coming, but it was too late then,” he said.
His wife, Sylvia Castaneda, broke down in tears as she recounted their loss.
“I had a lot of photos from my childhood, from life, and everything is gone. It seems like part of my life is gone. There’s nothing — just ashes.”
Firefighters suffered losses, too
Firefighter David Spliethof was doing his job as a spotter pilot, flying over the fiery chaos to assess damage and flag trouble. As he flew over his neighborhood this week, he realized his home had burned to ashes, too.
He took a picture of the charred debris where his house once stood and continued fighting the blaze, at times working 24-hour shifts with some of the more than 4,300 people fighting the Carr Fire.
“I don’t feel that I did anything special,” he said of continuing to work despite losing his home. “Once I saw my house gone … there’s going to be plenty of time to go back through the remains and see what we can salvage.”
Other firefighters lost their lives while trying to save others.
Of the six people killed in the Carr Fire, two were firefighters: Jeremy Stoke, who was helping evacuate people, and an unidentified bulldozer operator killed while fighting the flames.
To show their appreciation to firefighters and emergency personnel, Northern California communities are offering them food, water, even free haircuts. Some have posted handwritten signs all over the city. “Best first responders ever! Our heroes,” one sign read.
“We wanted to show our gratitude for fighting to save our city,” said Redding resident Nichole Grubbs-Miller, who posted some of the signs.
Some areas look ‘like a bomb hit’
All that’s left of some neighborhoods are piles of ash, concrete and charred cars. Preetha Reddy said her street in Redding looks like a war zone.
“There’s nothing left. It looks like a bomb hit it,” she said. Residents are not allowed to enter, and the destruction seems surreal.
“If they’d only let us in and have it sink in,” Reddy said.
Fire officials said some areas in Shasta County remain under evacuation orders because shifting winds and steep terrain are creating hazardous conditions. The weather this weekend will not provide much relief for the firefighters in Redding, with temperatures forecast to be in the mid-90s and wind gusts of up to 30 mph, CNN meteorologist Robert Shackelford said.
Firefighter Rick Johnson said the humidity and triple-digit temperatures are difficult enough without adding the heat from the fire. The blaze is so large and hot, it is creating its own localized weather system with strong winds, making it difficult to predict which way it will spread.
Carr is one of 11 big fires in the state
The Carr Fire has burned about 1,500 structures to the ground and is the largest of 11 major wildfires racing through California and stretching state resources. California has already spent a quarter of its firefighting budget for the year just in July.
Firefighters are struggling to stop the blazes, with the Carr Fire 39% contained by late Friday night.
Fire officials have issued a grim prediction, warning that massive blazes will cost the state billions of dollars over the next decade.
“What we’re seeing in California right now is more destructive, larger fires burning at rates that we have historically never seen,” Cal Fire spokesman Jonathan Cox said.

“Hell, yeah!”
You looked up from your book to see David grinning with a brown package in his hand.
“Y/N, mi princesa, look what I just received in the mail. The script is here for season two,” he said, his eyes wide and glowing with excitement.
You leaped up from the couch into his arms, tackling him to a nearby armchair.
“That’s incredible, Papi. I am so happy for you. Now I am going to see more of you, all strapped with leather belts and all sexy and buff.”
You placed a congratulatory kiss on his lips, your hands on his shoulders. David deepened it further, his hand snaking up to your neck, holding you in place as he coaxed your lips apart with his tongue.
Your tongues fought for dominance, but he won the fight as he gripped your hair, the rough gesture dumbfounding you for a minute.
David moved his hands to your waist and repositioned you directly over his growing erection.
With just a pair of sweatpants and thin cotton underwear separating your cores, you felt him, maddeningly close yet so far.
He was busy attacking your neck with little nips from his teeth, emptying your mind of all thought, but his incredible dick.
You pushed yourself off of him, ignoring the confused look on his face you sank to your knees in front of him.
A smirk later your hands went to the drawstring of his sweats. You pulled the fabric down and his dick sprang out. You leaned forward and David nearly held his breath in anticipation.
Not breaking eye contact, your tongue shot out from between your lips and licked a long, uninterrupted, wet stripe from the base to the tip of his dick.
“Oh Dios mio,” whispered David, and a switch flipped within you.
You were used to him conversing in occasional Spanish, but hearing him like this, made you hungry for more. With the singular goal of making him lose his inhibitions and let go in Spanish, you retreated your tongue back into your mouth and wrapped your lips around the tip of his dick.
David’s eyes rolled back into his head, and he let out a groan.
Despite being with him for several months, his girth always surprised you, especially when he was in your mouth.
You took a deep breath, placed your hands on his thighs, and slowly started to bob your head.
“ Mi reina, eso se siente tan bien. Fuck, baby.”
You moaned around his cock and he involuntarily bucked into your mouth at the sensation.
“Nene, keep that up and I will come in no time,” he said placing his hands on your arms with the intention of bringing you to your feet.
“Hands off, Papi. Today is about you,  let me making you feel good.”
You wrapped your hands around his cock, moving them in a rhythmic motion. Your mouth joined the party and keeping a firm grip on him, your tongue softly assaulted the tip which had started forming beads of precum.
His hands gathered up the hair away from your face as he intently watched his dick disappear between your lips. He enjoyed the soft pressure of your palm, eliciting soft moans every time you squeezed a bit harder.
You were loving his hands in hair, steering you, dictating your speed ever so gently. You took a deep breath and sank deeper onto his cock, trying to get as much of his length as possible.
His tip hit the back of your throat and you faltered for a second and like a warm glove it tightened over his cock.
“Oh princesa,” he groaned. His breathing turned slightly erratic and he was slowly losing control.
His hips bucked of their own accord and he fucked your mouth hard and fast. You sat with your jaw slackened, giving him as much room to fuck you as you could.
He was close and you could feel it in the way his cock twitched in your mouth when he stopped for a second to give you time to breathe.
Frantic whispering of your name followed a string of Spanish expletives filled the room.  You let out a deep moan, his cock vibrating in its wake.
He pulled out of your mouth and rose to his feet. You turned to face him, to the sight of him vigorously pumping his cock.
You tilted your chin up and streak of warm liquid sprayed across your face. David gasped out and another streak painted your chin and your lips. A couple more shots later, he collapsed on the armchair and you reached for the tissues and mopped up your face.
He held a hand out and you grabbed it, curling in his lap.
“Mi alma, mi Corazon, he said as he kissed your forehead, “ gracias, preciosa.”
You hummed out a smile, a feeling drowsiness washing over you. You snuggled further into him and promptly fell asleep, the last thing you registered was a chuckle from your beloved David.

Breaking News: Colombian players get death threats after losing penalty shootout to England
Two Colombian players who missed penalties against England have received death threats from furious fans on social media.
Vile messages targeting Mateus Uribe and Carlos Bacca started to appear within minutes of Colombia being knocked out of the 2018 World Cup in Russia following the dramatic shoot-out.
Uribe’s penalty hit the crossbar while Bacca’s attempt was saved by hero England goalkeeper Pickford.
According to UK’s Mirror, mostly aimed at Bacca who fans thought took the worse penalty and played badly, the posts warned the players they were “dead’, urged them to kill themselves and told them not to return to the South American country.
The sinister messages were made despite a police investigation into early death threats made towards Colombian player Carlos Sanchez after he was sent off three minutes into the team’s World Cup opener against Japan.
Many outraged football fans pointed out that Tuesday was the 24th anniversary of the death of Andres Escobar, who was shot dead after his own goal was blamed for sending Colombia home at the 1994 World Cup in USA.
One post by Twitter user David Castaneda warned: “Die Carlos Bacca. Son of a bitch. No-one wants you, gonorrhoea. To this country you don’t return.”
Another, Jhon Duqueismo, wrote: “Thank you to all the players, except to three-time son of a bitch, useless, dead, Carlos Bacca. Don’t come back here.”
HumorFPCosky wrote: “I hate you Carlos Bacca, I hate all of you, I hate your indifference, your animal surname, and your ass’s game. You’re worse than a cancer, at least with cancer you can go to a doctor and find out what you have.
“Carlos Bacca, get depressed and kill yourself, so you don’t continue living this agony.”
Patricio wrote: “Uribe, you are a piece of shit, I hope you die.”
Another user, INFINITO wrote: “That was Mateus Uribe’s last game, that man is already dead.”
But other Colombian fans expressed their shock at the cruel messages.
Brayan Sanchez wrote: “Don’t wish for the death of Bacca and Uribe. Do we wish to repeat what happened to Andres Escobar? Is this Colombia? Games are won and lost, we are a real country.”
Another, Lois Lane, said: “The anniversary of the death of Andres Escobar and you are calling for the death of Bacca. I’m sorry, I can’t stand such shit people. Get out of my timeline.”
And MoreJuanSe wrote: “Now they start to insult and threaten Uribe and Bacca. Yesterday was the 24th anniversary of the death of Andres Escobar, please, please! Let’s learn how to lose as well.”
Andres Escobar was gunned down by a gangland figure 10 days after his mistake against the US knocked Colombia out of the World Cup hosted in the USA.
Hours before the showdown with England his brother, Sachi, had warned that the tragedy could happen again if Colombia failed to get through to the quarter-finals.
And he pleaded with his country’s passionate fans and gangland figures to ensure sure that no other player is hurt or threatened if things didn’t go their way.
He said: “I want to send an important message to those people who think things can be resolved with violence, and with weapons, that they can take someone’s life just because they make a mistake, in this case the life of a football player.
“Football should be a vehicle of peace and social transformation, and at the end of the day, it is just a game.
“But I truly hope that, if Colombia failed to meet these expectations, then the tragedy that happened to my brother doesn’t repeat itself. God forbid that it happens again.”
And he said of the death threats made against Sanchez, he said: “As a brother who has gone through this, I know what must be going through their heads, and I wouldn’t want anyone to go through that.
“Carlos must be feeling both sad for the mistake he made, and very afraid, and his family too.
“My brother never received any threats, they just shot him dead in the most cowardly way. The fact that people are still allowed to say these things on social network sites, even threaten him with death… shows me that nothing good came out of Andres’ death, nothing was learned.
“These people are just lowlifes who are not real Colombian football fans, who should be arrested and thrown into jail.”
