How do you watch hockey games? I want to get into it but I have no clue how to start.
i pay for espn+ (as part of the hulu/disney+/espn+ bundle) which is the "official" online streaming service for the nhl. if you currently have hulu and disney+, i think it's a really great deal. this works for me personally because i'm currently located outside of my main teams blackout regions (eg. i am not in the tri-state area). unfortunately, if you are located within the limits of where a local broadcast would reach, espn+ is pretty much a non-option because they'll simply black out all the local team's games. so for example, when i go home, i get blacked out and can't watch games via espn+. so if you want to go this route, you also have to be outside of the blackout region for the nhl team you want to follow.
for free options, i think the easiest and most comprehensive i'm aware of (and use occasionally) is onhockey.tv. you will need an adblocker prior to loading this site (i use adblockerplus), but they are extremely comprehensive. they will have every broadcast regardless of where you are located geographically. sometimes the quality on here can get a little crunchy, and i always recommend clicking through the available stream links because some will come in better than others (if you hover over the link without clicking, you'll see a popup with which broadcast the link goes to). and when i say extremely comprehensive, i mean it. if a hockey game is broadcasted somewhere, they will have it. this includes the AHL, ECHL, international leagues (SHL, Liiga, etc), junior hockey games (WHL, OHL, U18s), college teams (basically any NCAA, mens or womens), and womens hockey leagues.
nhl66.ir is another free option which has a better interface and better quality, imo. this is my preferred free option, however, they've gotten a little harder to use this season as they have also started executing regional and national blackouts. these can be overwritten with use of a VPN, though i've had some trouble with this personally (it seems pretty finicky and often drops in the middle of games, can get frustrating). also keep in mind that you can only watch ESPN streams here if you are within the US and that national streams are only available outside of the US. so if you are located in the blackout region of the nhl team you want to follow, you'll have to have a vpn that can change specific location in the US, not just to a different country. they are going through a bit of an overhaul, so the issues with vpn dropping will likely be resolved, though i don't see them dropping the requirement of a vpn altogether.
lastly, i'd be remiss not to mention that the PHF streams all their games on twitch for free: https://www.twitch.tv/thephf. if you're just getting into the sport and just want to watch games to see if you like it, highly recommend. plus support professional women's hockey 👏
tldr; espn+ is the official paid service from the nhl. onhockey.tv is a good free option if you are inside a blackout region and want an easy option or want to watch outside the nhl. nhl66.ir is a good free option if you are outside the nhl team blackout region or you're willing to go through the hoops of using a vpn. twitch to watch womens hockey games.
as far as advice for "getting into hockey", you're definitely on the right track !! watching games is by far the best way to absorb things (and you'll be surprised how much you can pick up just from watching). i also recommend following the main beat reporters for the team(s) you want to follow on twitter! don't worry too much about knowing every rule and call or even every player on the team right away. hockey is pretty simple and quick to absorb especially when you watch a lot of games. don't feel like you have to memorize things or treat it like a college course. if you want to, have fun with it !! but like many things, you can decide if you want / how deeply you want to go into it as you find what aspects interest you (eg. analytics, knowing the ins and outs of the rulebook, team dynamics, prospect/player development, trades/contracts/signings, etc). none of those are requirements to being a hockey fan and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
i hope this helps and and if any of my followers use something else, feel free to comment below !!
To me, Machete kind of has the energy of a secondary villain/coldhearted side character in someone else's story that a lot of fans latch onto, moreso than the protagonist. Question is, would he be the villain in anyone's story?
Why, thank you! I'm actually glad to hear he gives off that vibe. I don't think he set out to become a villain but a lot of people certainly view him as one.
ik a lot of people are upset about how vaggie's speaking and singing voices are so different but what if. what if. what if vaggie's singing voice is high pitched and angelic because that's her true nature? because she's actually an angel? singing is a form of self expression after all, and vaggie's songs are when she's at her most vulnerable, when she doesn't have her walls and barriers up.
I also think that her voice adjusts depending on the situation? like when vaggie sings whatever it takes, she sings in a higher pitch because she's singing about protecting the love of her life, charlie. but then in songs like happy day in hell, or you didn't know, where she admittedly only has minimal lines, her voice is a lot deeper.
like think about you didn't know specifically. "careful charlie, keep a cool head" has a deeper tone because vaggie is literally telling charlie to hide away her emotions, her authentic self, and instead present a calm and collected front. we see this again in "don't, adam, please" where vaggie is literally trying to hide her past, and her angelic heritage, begging adam to not expose her.
but then more than anything reprise?? where she's singing her gay little heart out to charlie?? where she's telling charlie she's so in love with her, and that she loves her more than anything?? that's when vaggie's voice is high again, because she isn't hiding anything this time, her walls are down and she's being her authentic self. she's in love with charlie fricking morningstar and she's not afraid to show it.
i know i'm just a spiteful little contrarian but i fully believe that the point of tragedy is NOT to give us hope (which it doesn't naturally anyways unless the story is specifically constructed to do so) but to allow us to revel in the anti-fantasy of "what if everything that could possibly go wrong did go wrong"
I find it interesting how Trials of Apollo is an antithesis to Heroes of Olympus
Heroes of Olympus has a lot of romance and positivity about couples in general.
In Trials of Apollo we have couples fighting, couples breaking up, couples throwing curses at each other, couples k*lling each other, couples losing each other, there is a lot of negativity surrounding romance
And also couples planning to go to tartarus as if it were a summer vacation*** (thats for Care Bear and Grumpy little ball of darkness)
Of course there are exceptions like Josie and Emmie, but TOA in general is horrible for those who liked the excess of romance in HOO 🥹
I think fans want Jason to be a good person or be becoming one. To have a character that is well meaning and compassionate but decided murder is ok and to stand against main heroes who’s beliefs and actions go against the people he cares about and wants in his life. It’s confusing for people. People want their fav characters to be happy. But Jason can’t have his family’s support and follow his moral code. He’s cares about people and Gotham, and he’s an asshole who kills. It’s messy. It’s not black and white. I don’t even think Jason cares about being a good person or in the right anymore. I think he cares about what will save the most people instead.
Oh my goodness gracious I’ve been bamboozled
Batman’s definition of Good is not synonymous with absolute good/right no matter how much dc insists it is. Torture, battery/assault, surveillance, those are all condemnable actions too. I won’t get into the exhausting and frankly dumb debate of comic book morality wrt killing because I’ve already reblogged plenty of posts from other people who explained my thoughts on the matter far better than I ever have the patience to sit down and articulate. I also just think the notion that there’s something to be done about fictional characters who kill nazis and senseless murderers is stupid. Jason’s point is that the “main” heroes’ sanitized definition of right has its unaddressed holes and flaws which ultimately result in more preventable fatalities, and that he’ll work to correct those missing spots.
He doesn’t not care about doing what’s right. What he doesn’t care about (at least during his Winick characterization) is whether Batman thinks he’s right or wrong, because he sees the flaws in Batman’s methodology (and since he has a mind of his own). Batman’s methods alone cannot address Arkham’s revolving door and the rogues that come and go through those doors who have no intention (or capability from the doylist pov) of ever changing or undergoing redemption. Jason knows that he’s minimizing the number of preventable deaths by killing his targets, typically Characters Who Simply Do Fucked Up Shit Just Because, Why The Fuck Not?
Secondly, Jason is compassionate … to a fault. That was his fatal flaw. If he wasn’t so hell-bent on saving his potential birth mother he just met from that bomb despite everything she did to him prior, he could have protected himself instead, however slim his odds of survival were. What about his relationship with his other parents? He was a caregiver during his early childhood years for Catherine, until her death. Even mature adults who are financially stable find being a caregiver to a dying parent to be extremely burdensome on their bodies and minds, but he never complained about it or resented Catherine for being unable to care for him. Despite how none of his parents have really been what he needed them to be, he doesn’t blame them for their failings, and even continues to think highly of them (Bruce included).
And post-death? Enter Lost Days. Despite being dead set on plotting his revenge on Bruce, he constantly sidelines this in order to save other victims who are helpless like he once was. His own anger, trauma, and mission don’t remain his priority. (Sound familiar? Something something my own trauma above my son’s, mission above all else, etc.). Why would he waste precious time and risk his own life to do this if he wasn’t empathetic towards these victims or didn’t care about doing the right thing. He is simultaneously horribly traumatized and full of rage, and also incapable of ignoring what’s happening to victims around him (even as he claims that it’s indeed not his priority). And in that same vein, the entire premise of his rebirth outlaws run was that he doesn’t care if the public views him as a villain, an outlaw, so long as he can protect Gotham. And anyway where is this portrayal of him not caring about being in the right anymore. Almost every modern Jason story is about him grappling with where he stands with Bruce/Batman. During the early 2000s was probably the last time he did not care (hello, tentatodd??).
Jason has very evidently been portrayed as a kind and compassionate character. He is also simultaneously a calculated killer who doesn’t hesitate to kill when he deems necessary, and does so without remorse. It’s called being a Complex Character With An Edge™ that as you said, people so often claim to love. However when he fulfills that latter part, that seems to upset people because “killing bad”, and they then try to shave off and round out all his edges and claim he shouldn’t be that angry. In that case I guess you should just stick to liking traditional one-dimensional characters instead of claiming to like Jason but then encouraging his character assassination attempt by dc. Lol.
Lastly, who said anything about the batfam making Jason happy? Just because he’s written nowadays to want acceptance from Bruce (a shoddy attempt at forcing a non-existent nuclear batfamily), doesn’t mean that it’s a sound decision or that it does his character justice. I certainly don’t empathize with the idea that Jason needs the family’s approval or acceptance to be happy. (And anyway he has enough outlets for angst and pain aside from the batfam hello explore his other sources of trauma and do more deep dives into how he thinks when he’s alone). I don’t want them to magically make up and become one big happy family. This is not disney Lol. Besides, there are plenty of stories from dc that have that type of “wholesome” (hate that word utilization) characterization for Jason (Li’l Gotham, Tiny Titans, wfa, and even new stuff like the brave and the bold mini) and that is sufficient imo. Jason fans who are invested in the character deserve accurate, nuanced characterization and well-written stories, whether they be from his robin days (e.g., Batman: The Cult) or as red hood.

I feel like a lot of Sansa Stark haters are misogynists in a way that also exposes that they're mad that Game of Thrones isn't just a bunch of power fantasies lmao. They're mad that she's selfish and shortsighted in the beginning, but duh, she's a child. Anyone would be selfish and shortsighted as a child. Even these guys. Then they're mad that she "doesn't do anything" (especially when they contrast her with Arya). It's just another one of those things where it's like, sorry my guy, sorry you were forced to acknowledge that in this world of power brokering and war, there are also other people who are forced into dreadful situations and who cannot Cut People's Throats to get out of it, I'm sorry that you find a realistic depiction of vulnerability and helplessness so unbearable and I wonder how you get on in real life with that. idk...they hate her so much for stuff that's mostly out of her control. it's her femininity and it's also her just being a child and it's also her not being physically violent and they came to this show just wanting it to be nonstop power and violence and like...sorry!!!!! Sorry a tv show forced you to be observe a human girl for once in your life and have it not be about her killing people! 🙃 (note: this is NOT a knock against Arya whomst I love. I just find that a lot of Sansa haters try to compare the sisters in a way that *they* think makes Sansa look bad but just has more to do with their own obsession with violence rly) anyways. sansa stark defense squad lives
!!!!!!! all of this, exactly — thank you for taking the time to write this out <3
The latest chapter actually provided a lot of Yuri backstory and context through a mix of Yuri's own words and information provided by Chloe.
This is a bit image-heavy so I've chucked it under a read more. Spoilers for chapter 89 below.
Firstly, Yuri says that he skipped grades in order to get where he was. To some extent, we could have inferred this already given his relatively young age for being part of the SSS, but it's nice to have official confirmation.
Chloe is pretty familiar with Yuri, and we find out here that they actually went to college together, where she was his upperclassman. She didn't skip any grades herself and in the SSS she's actually ranked below him, but their history still stands, for all that Yuri would rather hide behind rank. Her knowledge of him back then means she's one of the few people in the position to call him out rather than subjecting him to the praise/concern he seems to get from his superiors and immediate colleagues respectively.
And, as we find out here, he's always hidden behind that sense of superiority. As someone who skipped grades, he didn't really have any peers and seemed to have pissed off everyone in his surroundings by playing the genius and claiming to only care about his sister.
Admittedly, his sister *is* his motivation and why he studied so hard in the first place, so he could pay her back for her time protecting him, but the whole description of Yuri "not minding being hated" reads more as him using indifference for a shield. So long as he could say he was doing it all for Yor, it didn't matter if he had no friends. It likely fed into itself and added to the isolation that would have already faced him as someone years younger than everyone in his surroundings.
(I do like the slight mirror to Twilight this raises though. The idea that achievements may not see the light of day, but that's not the point or reason for him to do them. The idea of being in a position where you couldn't do anything so all you could do was make yourself stronger and refuse to be that weak again.)
And we can see even to this day that he's not much of a socialiser. Before Chloe, there hasn't really been anyone who gets close to the description of "friend", only really "concerned colleague" or "pleased superior". Yuri's still lacking true peers.
And here's the kicker. The key trait linking Yuri, Nightfall, and Twilight together. They all think that if they just get stronger and try harder they can achieve their goals. Their respective obsessions prevent them from taking a step back and approaching from a different angle, because they're so tied up in the idea that if they just push through, it'll fall into place.
Obviously, I don't know Nightfall's backstory to compare here, but it's easy to see how this tunnel vision developed for both Yuri and Twilight. The brute force pushing through working every time is a somewhat childish notion so it makes sense that it has its roots in their childhoods.
hello! I went looking for the most recent bit I wrote, and I think it's actually kind of fun. feat. my deeply-held headcanon that Essek has some divination training:
“You are not one for divination.”
It was a weak protest, given the fact that Essek had in fact done some study of divination as it pertained to potentiality and dunamantic time. “Caleb Widogast. I will not allow it—him,” he growled, “to remain a shadow over you. You have ended this. Put it aside now.”
for all of my beloved ttb readers, the last chapter is going to be a little bit delayed. i’ve been hit by cosmic despair due to our official cancellation. the last chapter will be posted as soon as i’ve had some time to grieve 😌 thanks very much for your patience 🖤
