@lotrladiessource lotr ladies week day 3: dwarrowdams | joy | motifs
dís, sister of thorin, daughter of thrain! i associate a lot of raven motifs with the line of dúrin, and that they have a special relationship. the ravens of ravenhill are an ancient breed, noble and intelligent enough to understand mortal tongues. here dís is dancing with two of röac's children after the battle of five armies, finding respite in the ravens even during her grief.

lord of the rings ladies week day three | dwarrowdams | dís and her ancestresses | @lotrladiessource
Thordís and Eydís were sisters of the Line of Durin. In the ancient tradition of their foremothers, they were each simply given the name “Dís” upon their birth, with a unique prefix added when they came of age. According to their mother Arndís, this custom stretched back to Alfdís, daughter and heir of Durin I the Deathless himself. Thordís received her name for her boisterous, thunderous laughter, while Eydís earned hers for her cleverness and good luck. The sisters each married into Longbeard royalty, Thordís wedding Prince Thráin II and eventually becoming his queen, and Eydís wedding Prince Náin of the Iron Hills. Thordís had three children: Thorin II Oakenshield, Frerin, and a daughter, once more named only Dís. Eydís bore only one child, Dáin II Ironfoot, and the cousins were fast friends in their youth. But when the dragon came, Thordís was slain, and her children dispossessed from their kingdom. Thus it was that Dís daughter of Thordís had no mother to name her when she came of age, and in honor of her fallen mother she refused to take a prefix altogether. Shortly after the Fall of Erebor, both Frerin and Náin were killed in the Battle of Azanulbizar, where Thorin and Dáin won great renown. Though Eydís remained in the Iron Hills, she never forgot those she lost, and when Thorin called upon Dáin for aid in his Quest to reclaim Erebor, she urged her son to heed his call. Alas, Thorin died in the resulting battle, leaving Dáin to inherit the throne. Then at last Eydís reunited with Dís her niece, last of her siblings, and offered her a new name: Freydís, for her noble courage in the face of much hardship. This name she accepted in her heart, though to all others she was yet known only as Dís, daughter of Thráin.

I am extremely curious about Bath bomb and Garrus gets a tutor
Hehehe
Bath bomb:
"It's a gift," he clarified quickly. "For my, ah, girlfriend. She's a human." Her eyes widened just barely - he was starting to get used to that reaction - but otherwise she didn't miss a beat. "Well, in that case, you're definitely in the right place. Is there a particular type of product you're looking for today?" "Well..." He surveyed the shop for a moment, finding that he vaguely recognized the shapes of a few bottles from things he'd seen in Shepard's bathroom, and some of the signs indicated things he was familiar with ("soap" was universal enough), but he was largely out of his element, and a little intimidated, if he was being honest. "Not exactly. All I know is that she just got this new apartment with a big bathtub in it, and she said she's never had one before. And a friend of ours - another human - was talking about things she liked putting in her baths to relax. But half the words she said didn't translate." He sighed, his shoulders slumping a bit. "Anyway, I just wanted to... She's been under a lot of pressure, and she's not easy to buy gifts for." "I think I understand," Alice replied with a firm nod. "You need bath bombs." "...Pardon?"
And...
Garrus gets a tutor (not part of my personal canon btw):
But right now, he was thinking about the sex. If he was honest with himself, it had been amazing, because it was with Shepard, his best friend and the person he respected most in the galaxy. But if it had been with anyone else? He might’ve rated it a bit lower. He knew he’d fumbled a bit. All the research in the world hadn’t prepared him for having her in front of him, and she didn’t seem wholly confident either. He’d naively hoped that they would have time to iron out the wrinkles, to get used to each other. But the Reapers apparently had something to say about that. What if… If he got to see her again (big “if”), and she was still interested in him, what if he came into it with a little more… practical knowledge? It wouldn’t be cheating, even if it kind of felt that way to him - sleeping with someone twice and never discussing the relationship certainly didn’t make for a monogamous arrangement. This was insane. He was thinking about hiring a sex tutor.

Someone beat you to #4!
14. Do you lend your books to people? Are people scared to borrow books from you? Do you know exactly where all your “lost” books are and which specific friend from school you haven’t seen in twelve years still possesses them? Will you ever get them back?
I do lend books to people! I have a vague sense of who has something of mine, but I kind of lose track. The only real rule I have is that if I ask for them back, I need 'em back. This has only been a problem once and it's a long story and I'm not gonna get into it here--but I did get the book eventually.
15. Do you write in the margins of your books? Dog-ear your pages? Read in the bath? Why or why not? Do you judge people who do these things? Can we still be friends?
I don't write in the margins but I will underline things. I dog ear pages constantly. I hate baths because it makes me feel like a human soup so no. I do not judge anyone who does these things! AND YES, obviously. 😊
19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?
TOO LONG TO ANSWER 🤣 Have a story: one time in a writing workshop, a visiting writer (who is highly respected, has won multiple awards, is very much a writer's writer, big name in the literary community, white man over 60 which will be relevant in a sec) told me making my characters literal magic-using witches was inherently anti-feminist because women don't need magic to have power so I should take the magic out of myYA contemporary fantasy book. Anyway, long story short, that was the moment I learned not all writing is for all audiences and that's 100% okay because this man was not my audience and never would be my audience and I probably didn't want him for my audience anyway.

Okay, so two random questions: what's your favorite original fairytale and what's your favorite fairytale retelling?
My favourite fairytale changes a lot, but right now I really love The Giant Who Had No Heart In His Chest, which is a Asbjørnsen tale.
I refuse to pick one favourite fairytale retelling so, a list:
All of Robin McKinley's retellings (Spindle's End, Beauty, Rose Daughter, Deerskin)
Frogkisser by Garth Nix
Echo North by Joanna Ruth Meyer
The Wolf Hour by Sara Lewis Holmes

24, 26, and 46 for Valmellia?
24. who remembers things?
Generally speaking I think they're both pretty good at remembering things. Valerius is more of a naturally organised person and tends to put everything into an itinerary, but sometimes his mind will let things slip because he has been so busy (even if it's something like 'what time was I meant to be having dinner with x?') and that's usually where Camellia steps in.
26. who cooks normally?
The servants, but Valerius would usually be the one cooking when they were on campaign. Camellia is canonically a terrible cook (Greybor and Wenduag both have banter about it, and Lann has another where he thinks her throwing a moldy log onto the fire smells good when....it really doesn't) and Valerius comes from a faith where food should be indulgent, rich. He's not letting her near the campfire (unless he wanted a piece of atrocious cooking for his daily obedience, I guess.)
46. (added) morning routine?
I feel like I've talked about their morning routine in the past before and it's nothing super exciting. Valerius usually gets up before the sun has risen to get some morning exercise in while she sleeps in, so they rarely wake up together. If they do, then usually they have a round of morning sex and if they really don't have to be anywhere, he'll also feed from her -- usually after a feed, she's sleepy and he's akin to a milk-drunk kitten. Morning feeds are rare for that very reason.
Anyway, usually by the time he's back from his morning exercise and has freshened up, Camellia will begrudgingly leave bed and the two of them will have breakfast together before he has to go about his duties and she starts getting ready for the day.
(When the twins are at That Age where they decide it's a great idea to wake Mama and Tată early, any form of a lie in is unlikely until the twins are older.)
