Eli Cardale sat across from you at the table. You had your legs folded underneath you, tingling as they fell asleep. You had been here a long time. You could tell outside the window that the sun was starting to go down. The stained glass windows of the library were tricky like that, never quite revealing if it was as late as it seemed. Eli had his nose stuck in a book still. You wondered where Victor was, if he was studying somewhere.
“Are you done?” Eli questioned. Your head snapped back towards him. He was staring at you through the thick rims of his glasses. You smiled, shrugging.
“I’m getting sleepy,” you admitted. Eli nodded once, tucking his papers into his textbook.
“Is that code for you’re going to go find Victor?” There was a gentle edge to his voice, a slight jealous tinge. You shook your head, rubbing your eyes.
“Truly sleepy,” you promised. “I’ve been reading about boring things forever Eli. I can only do that for so long. You should share some of your brain power.” He shook his head.
Eli valued these afternoons with you. They were nice and peaceful. Life outside of these walls tended to be chaotic and with complications he could never quite grasp. In here, nothing had happened to him. It was just you and his books. He could spend forever with you and his books.
Despite the calmness of the moment, he felt the most emotion here.
“Plus, Victor is probably off studying.”
“Alright,” Eli huffed, though there was disbelief in it. You smiled as he put your things back in your book bag. You could probably make some shitty coffee back at the dorms and stay up a little bit longer. Make the day last past schoolwork. Maybe even catch up on some of your own reading endeavors. “Are we still meeting up tomorrow afternoon?”
“Yes sir,” you promised. “Same time, same place?”
“Yes ma’am.” You gave him a nod as you pushed your chair under the table. Eli started to leave. You followed close behind him. “Have you studied for the test in Givens' class tomorrow?”
“Enough.”
“That doesn’t sound like enough,” he admitted. You shrugged.
“What am I gonna learn in the next 12 hours that is actually gonna help me Eli?” He shook his head. He couldn’t believe you sometimes, though he enjoyed having you around. “You disagree.”
“We have different minds,” he said. The air was refreshing. You walked down the steps of the library, the sun hitting your face. It felt nice after being cooped up for so long. You passed other students, people cramming and holding large cups of caffeine. You weaved through them on the cobblestones back to the dorms.
“What does that mean?”
“It means we have different ways of learning,” he suggested. You grinned up at him. He looked particularly handsome this evening. You knew he always teased you about liking Victor more than him but it was Eli you had always been in love with. It would always be Eli. His stoicism, his mind, his understanding without you having to say anything.
“That’s not a bad thing,” you countered.
“Did I say it was?”
“You did not.” You lifted your leg dramatically as you started to go separate ways. “I’ll see you tomorrow Eli. Don’t work too hard.”
“You know me,” he called. There was a life in his voice he didn’t recognize when he was with you. You gave him a half wave, an adorable gesture, before walking the other way.
He watched the back of your head for a moment. Your hair bounced in the sunlight. You looked gorgeous this afternoon, particularly distracting. He watched you go like you were taking a piece of him with you. Eli and Victor had decided not to tell you about their experiments, for your safety. That didn’t mean he didn’t want to. He wanted to hear your thoughts and your comments and your reserves.
He had put his foot down. Victor was more likely to slip up than he was.
He still wanted to tell you.
You turned a corner and he lost you. He dropped his head down, imagining someone else seeing him standing alone, staring at a girl who didn’t once turn back to look at him.
-
“Tracking him has never been easy,” Mitch grumbled. He was sitting on the hotel bed. The adjoining door was open, allowing Dol to come and go as he pleased. Sydney and you had your own separate room from the boys, at Victor’s insistence.
“Well it’s never been so fucking hard,” you muttered. You looked out the window. Eli Cardale was out there somewhere, among the people and the cars. You had recently narrowed in on him to this city but been unable to get any closer. He was supposed to be obvious when you were close. “He’s killing people. What do you mean we can’t find him now that he’s so close?”
You looked over at Victor. He was standing at the computer. He had a look of contempt on his face. You had never seen so little life in Victor. He had always been the stoic type but never as much as Eli. Now, years after college, he was almost dead in the eyes.
“We need to split up.”
“And what? Scrape the streets to see if we find any rats?” you spat.
You were different too.
“He had typical haunts. We need to find an EO and narrow them down, knowing he’ll be around them.” Victor looked at Mitch. He nodded once, getting up to go to the computer. You were never quite sure how they were able to find people so quickly but you also could never understand how they couldn't find Eli. Victor walked over to you.
“We’ll find him,” he promised. His voice was hard. You looked over at him.
He looked so old. He looked weathered. He looked like a corpse. He had died.
Eli and Victor had never let you die. They never would, not even after everything happened. You were a human, just like Mitch, and you were stuck here in this purgatory between people who had been your closest friends.
After he got out of prison Victor sought you out. He knew that to find Eli he would have to find you first. He half hoped the two of you would be together, frolicking off into the sunset, like the ordeal had never happened. That isn’t what happened.
“How can you be so sure?”
“Because he’s looking for us too.”
“Do you think he knows that I’m here?”
“I don’t think he ever lost you,” he said lowly.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Eli liked having his eye on you. I don’t think he would’ve let you leave his peripheral vision if it wasn’t for me.”
“What a rebel.”
“Yes ma’am.” Dol walked into the room. He jumped up on Victor’s bed and did a couple circles before lying down with a huff. Sydney was awake. Victor looked back towards the dog, remembering he had a child to care for. “Do you want to go get food while Mitch looks?” He had a gentle tinge in his voice that he saved for you and Sydney. Those in this room were the closest thing he had to family, though he would never admit that.
“Sure. I need some fresh air anyway.” You cleared your throat and walked back, grabbing some money. “Want anything Mitch? Going to the deli next door.”
“I’m alright. Filled up on protein bars.” You rolled your eyes.
“Once a jock, always a jock,” you joked.
“I don’t think-”
“Just go with it Mitch. Vic?” He shook his head. He would rather wallow and die than ask for anything he could get himself. “Syd, I'm getting food!”
“Can you get me a sandwich?” she called from the other room.
“What kind?”
“Tuna fish!”
“Kay!” You opened the door and shut it behind you. The hotel was large but it was cheap. You were okay with the sketchy neighbors as long as no one asked questions. No one got into the elevator with you on your floor and you pushed the down button. You should’ve invited Sydney to come with you. She could use the fresh air too. Dol probably needed to go to the bathroom.
You thought about how you weren’t that far. You could go back up and grab them, that way you had some company and extra hands for the two sandwiches. Maybe they had dog treats for Dol. You always loved places that thought of that because of how often Dol was around.
The elevator opened on the second floor. You stepped aside, keeping your head down so you didn’t have to make eye contact. The man walked in and pushed the first floor. The elevator started to move again.
He pushed the emergency stop button, causing the elevator to come to a harsh stop. You stumbled forward, grabbing the railing beside you.
“Hey,” you said, annoyed. You glanced up at the floors that were highlighted at 2 still. You finally looked up at him. He was wearing a large black coat with a collar that covered the side of his face. “What the fuck?” you asked, louder this time. He tilted his head towards you so you could see his eye through the thick rimmed glasses.
Your mouth clamped shut.
“Eli?” When he turned around it was like no time had passed. His face looked exactly the same, exactly the man you sat across from at the library. His eyes were the only thing different, a little less life in them. He and Victor were more alike than either cared to admit.
The elevator felt too small. You were confined in a small space with someone you had carded as the villain of this story.
But it was Eli.
“I heard you were looking for me,” he said, quietly. His voice didn’t seem threatening. There was nothing there that felt wrong.
“Yeah,” you breathed. “You’re killing people.”
“They’re not people.” You narrowed your eyes at him. There was a difference. This was the Eli you had never seen, only heard about from Victor. “You…you’re people.” You looked up at him through your hair at him. Your eyes were big, doe eyed, he would say.
“You’re people too.” He shook his head. There was a sly smile on his face. He had orchestrated his moment, he had thought about the second you would leave and that it would be just you. He needed to see you before he saw anyone else. He stayed in this town to see you.
He was obsessed with Victor.
But if he knew love, it was you.
“I’m a God.”
“Then what is Victor? What’s Serena?” You could tell you hit a hard note with Serena.
“Serena’s no longer an issue.”
“She was an issue?” You watched each other for a moment. It was nice to be there with him, even if it hurt to know how different you were.
“She was an issue.”
“Then what is Victor?”
“Victor’s a defect.”
“What happened to you?” you asked him, borderline pleaded. You took a step forward and grabbed his hand. He looked down at it like it was a foreign object. He didn’t retreat.
You didn’t do it to manipulate him. You did it because you had to, because he was right there, before you had to touch him. “What did they do to you Eli?”
There was no way you could’ve known what they did to him but the question hit him where it would've hurt. It was a touchy subject. He had the sudden urge to hug you, to wrap his arms around you and engulf you in his embrace. To kiss you, to do what he never had the time to do when you were in college. He thought of Victor. He wondered if Victor was with you now, if his worst fear had finally come to fruition.
“Eli,” you whispered. His eyes had glossed over, lost in thought. He came back, staring at you, studying your face.
“They cut me open. They took parts of me out. They couldn’t kill me.” His voice had no emotion, like he was talking about the weather.
“I’m sorry.” You knew you should be using this time to convince him to change his ways. You didn’t have him for long. You should’ve been telling him that killing was never the answer and that no matter what happened to him, he should never be taking it out on others.
But you couldn’t bring yourself to do that.
Without warning, you wrapped your arms around him.
His natural reaction was to tense up. He assumed you were hugging him to manipulate him, to get to the buttons, to try and hurt him. Moments passed and you stayed there, head pressed against his chest. You made no ill efforts.
He wrapped his arms around you. He put his chin on your head. He closed his eyes.
Why couldn’t it have been like this forever?
Melancholy filled up the small space. It could never last like this. You had to go back to Victor and you both knew you would tell him that Eli had been here. There is nothing more special than a short lasting mutual agreement to set things aside to have some closure.
You let him go. Your hands lingered on him as long as you could.
“You have to go?” he questioned. The tinge of emotion was back in his voice.
“They’ll come looking for me,” you said quietly. The act of going back assured him some time to leave. You were trying to help him, even now, even after everything.
He nodded once. He pushed the elevator button to start moving again. It moved down slowly but not slow enough. You both faced the door. You linked your pinky with his, refusing to look at him.
When the door opened you let out a deep breath. He let you go. You missed his touch already. He walked out the elevator doors.
Without thinking you reached forward, stopping the doors from shutting.
“Eli!” He turned back around. His cold face was back, haunting you with the differences in time. You swallowed. “It was always you.”
His face softened.
The door shut. You watched him until they shut as he turned away from you. The elevator brought you back up to your floor. Like a zombie you walked down the hallway. You had forgotten your keycard and knocked on the door.
Mitch opened the door.
“Where’s the sandwiches?”
Behind him Victor stood, watching your face. He read your numb expression and raised his chin, hardening his face.
“Eli.”

Pain
Victor Vale x fem!reader x Eli Cardale
Warnings: pain, you technically die and some vague descriptions of that, eli cuts himself on purpose a few times
When you died, you got sort of a cheap power. Victor would get pain. He would feel every single cell in his body individually as it withered away. Eli would get a sort of invincibility. His very skin becoming able to regenerate and recount what had once been untouched.
When you died, all you could think about was how you were leaving Eli and Victor.
You were leaving them alone, by themselves. Who knew what would happen then?
You had been doing this test before any of you knew how you got your powers in the first place. If you had known beforehand you wouldn’t have had your last thoughts be; What will happen to Eli and Victor?
When you woke up your head hurt. You felt weak, sure, from the whole dying thing. But you had a headache. That was entirely separate feeling from you being weak. It was like you were feeling it outside of your body.
Eli stood at the edge of the room, watching you carefully.
“Do you feel anything?”
“I feel like I need an aspirin,” you whispered. “God my head hurts. I didn’t drink any water today,” you said, rubbing your temples. You stood up and Eli walked over to you in two strides. He grabbed your forearm, holding you up.
“Where did Victor go?” you asked quietly.
“He’s right outside,” he explained but his eyes were still scanning you for signs of distress. You took deep breaths, rubbing your forehead as though it alone would alleviate the pain.
“He left?”
“He took a step out.” Eli still had your forearm in his grasp. “You’re sure you don’t feel any different?” You shook your head a bit and looked up at him.
“I don’t think so. I think…I think I’m normal. Just had a near death experience.”
“You were dead. Very dead. Medically dead.”
“Good to know my immune system is better than yours and Vics.”
“That’s not..that’s not what that means,” he said quietly, shaking his head. You opened up the door to the bathroom where Victor stood, fingers pinched to the bridge of his nose. He stood straight when he saw you come out.
“You’re alright,” he said evenly. He had the same look in his eyes as Eli. He was looking to find something out of place, something that wouldn’t exactly line up with his perception of you. He was clearly disappointed when he found nothing, his shoulders dropping.
“She died,” Eli said, standing beside you. You nodded.
“Just didn’t get a cool power,” you muttered quietly.
“Do you have an aspirin in your packet of tools Eli? God my head is killing me,” Victor muttered, pushing past the two of you. He was caught up in his own thoughts, his own worries and his own powers.
“Mine too,” you said. “Think that’s the dying thing though. You gonna run some more tests Cardale or can I sleep this off?”
“I just wanna double check that you're stabilized before you leave. Maybe it’s better if you stay here.”
“Not a bad idea,” Victor said, rummaging through Eli’s things in the bathroom. “If you flatline we definitely want you around so we can be charged for the murder.” You rolled your eyes.
“You guys don’t mind?”
“I’d prefer it,” Eli said.
“You can take my bed,” Victor said. He sounded better now that he had finally found what he was looking for. “I think I’m gonna do some homework anyway.” You rubbed your head and nodded.
“Thank you. Both of you.”
-
You woke up the next morning with a striking sudden pain on your finger.
“I can tell you’re healing Eli, you don’t need to keep showing off,” Victor was murmuring. They were in the same room as you, fairly close, but his voice was low enough not to wake you. You raised your hand, trying to find the source of the prick.
“I didn’t mean to,” Eli said. “I’m just trying to make a sandwich.”
“With a very sharp knife,” Victor commented.
“It still hurts,” Eli countered. “I wouldn’t do it if I couldn’t help it.” You raised your head a bit to see the outlines of the two men. Their presence made you comforted and the sudden pain had subsided, as had your headache. You were feeling better than ever truly. If this was the effect death had on you, you should’ve died sooner.
“Morning sleepy head. You missed your 9am,” Victor said. “We didn’t wanna wake you though. FIgured death was a good excuse for skipping.”
“You should’ve woken me. I feel fine. Thought I got a bee sting for a second there though. Maybe some of my body parts are still coming back,” you joked. Eli snorted a bit and Victor hoisted himself up onto the counter.
“Have you seen Eli’s fun little party trick yet? He just cut himself making a sandwich. How convenient he keeps doing it.”
“You’re just jealous you didn’t get anything,” Eli said evenly. “Or should I stab you, just to be sure?” You rolled your eyes.
“Oh now you gotta show her,” Victor said. “Come on. Slice something open.” Eli didn’t look like he exactly wanted to but now he was on the spot. He grabbed the knife that was on the table and brandished it for a moment.
“A paper cut. That’s it.”
“Well lemme get up hold on,” you said, laughing. You were kind of excited. You had never seen Eli regenerate, you had only heard the story. You moved so you stood between them.
Eli took a deep breath and swiftly sliced his index finger open a bit.
You and him winced at the same time, an unexpected sting coming for your own index finger. You didn’t even get to see his skin reheal because you had raised your own.
“What? That bee come back for seconds?” Victor asked.
“No,” you muttered. “Just felt like I got a paper cut.”
It couldn’t have been more obvious. You and Eli both had your fingers out, showing them for different reasons. Inadvertently for the same reason.
There were a couple moments of silence as pieces fit together in everyone's heads, separately. Eli cleared his throat and then broke his own promise and cut himself again, this time on his arm. You winced, grabbing yours. Same place, even the same arm.
“Oh shit,” Victor muttered. “What, your power is to feel other people's pain?”
“I don’t…I don’t know,” you said, slightly disappointed. That wasn’t exactly a defensive power. “Eli hit Victor.”
Eli didn’t even hesitate a moment and gave his friend a firm hit on the shoulder. Victor grabbed his arm and gave you both a look. You had felt it.
“I can’t feel the impact but I can feel the sting. Like Eli hit me.”
“Fascinating,” Eli muttered. “Do you think it’s whoever you're closest to?”
“Then I wouldn’t feel Victor's pain.”
He nodded a bit.
“Would it be awful of us to hit whoever comes down the hallway?” you asked quietly. Victor was already leaving the room. Thankfully it wasn’t someone you knew but it seemed to be someone Eli did. He waved, flashing that charming smile and then gave him a firm, uncharacteristic, high five. You felt that sting in your hand. Victor slapped the boys back as though he was seeing an old chum.
That was interesting.
Nothing to that.
Eli was eyeing you and you gently shook your head.
After very quick goodbyes you rushed back into their room.
“So what? It’s not other people?”
“Maybe it’s just friends?” you suggested.
“Well if my theory is correct,” Eli started, “it would be the last thing you thought of before you died.”
“What theory?” you asked.
“I’ll explain it later. Just…what was the last thing you thought? The thing that got you through to surviving.” You shrugged.
“My thoughts were kind of jumbled in the moment honestly. I remember wanting to live and not wanting to leave you two dolts behind. I remember thinking about you guys.”
Eli leaned back on the back of his feet.
“You can feel us,” he concluded. Victor was quiet a moment.
“I wonder if you can feel everything, from whatever distance,” Victor murmured. “If it’s just us.”
“That’s a lot of variables to be tested,” Eli said. “But it’s…it’s kind of sweet.” You rolled your eyes.
“It was just instinct. Plus, it’s not a very good power. Unless one of you decides to go off and lose your mind or something, I won’t even need to know what you’re feeling.”

Tumblr media
matt sturniolo x fem!oc / reader
summary : y/n and matt don't have to like each other to continue this thing of theirs, right?
warnings : implications of sex, alcohol, mention of weed, ???
mickey speaks : THANK U FOR THE LOVE ON THIS SERIES!!! sorry if this part feels shorter than the usual !! things get cute in next few parts...
THIS IS PART FIVE GO READ THE OTHERS FIRST OK
"SHE'S sick again?" remi asks, scooting herself further into the booth.
"yeah, i think it's her sinuses or something. she seemed pretty bummed about staying home, i feel awful." andrea pouts while glancing at the menu.
"she's the only person to ever be sick this often in june," remi giggles.
"we should order something to-go for her then. maybe soup?" erin suggests.
"that sounds nice, i'll text her- hopefully she's awake."
౨ৎ
"i can't keep telling my friends i'm sick." you huff as you walk back into your room to find matt redressing.
"why not?" his voice is muffled through his shirt as he tugs it over his head, leaving his hair ruffled.
you lay yourself on your bed lazily, "because they're smart enough to stop believing me soon."
"and why can't they just mind their business?" he looks over to you before reaching down to adjust the white shoes on his feet.
you stretch an arm out to grab your phone from your side table, mumbling, "you must not have friends who worry for you.”
he shakes his head then sighs, “sure, my friends care about me, but they also know when to leave me the fuck alone.”
“right, and my friends know me well enough to know i’m never asking to be left alone.” your comment comes out with more sass than you intended but you know he doesn't understand (or care to understand) your friendships enough to comment on them. then again, you were the one who brought this up in the first place.
"mmm...right. forgot you're just a little insane," he tsks, looking into your mirror and adjusting his shirt some more.
"shut up, matt," you continue staring at your phone, though it's only open to your home screen because you're far more engaged in the conversation than anything your phone could give you. "okay actually, what should i dooo?" you whine.
"i sure as hell won't know?!" his face twists up as he turns to look at you, "you're a smart girl, i'm sure you can figure it out."
you roll your eyes, "'kay... well maybe i've picked up a hobby...like, i dont know, painting! and i just really enjoy painting all alone, 'cause it helps me...focus?"
matt sarcastically laughs through his words, “you’re weird as shit,” he throws your plush throw blanket (that fell on the floor when you pushed matt on your bed just an hour ago) at you. “alright, i’m headin’ out.”
you don’t even give him a second look, “bye.”
౨ৎ
a few cheers of “ayy” and “look who made it” echo out from across the small alley as matt tucks his keys in his front pocket.
he looks over to see chris excitedly pointing at him with an arm hooked on nathan’s neck and another close friend, elijah, sitting on an oversized couch with a smile.
matt chuckles under his breath and walks closer to them, taking in the rowdy and neoned atmosphere of this downtown bowling alley. “what’s good?” he greets his group of friends.
“what’s good with you?” nathan counters with a grin as he moves to dap up matt.
matt shrugs into the handshake as eli begins to speak and stand up, “yeah, where the fuck are you comin' from?”
“home. don’t worry about it,” matt defends as his tongue guides over his hidden smile with a loose shrug of a shoulder.
“nooo! just say it how it is, matt,” chris says through a bite of nachos, “you slept in late and forgot about boys night, big fucking deal. you’re here now!” he throws his hands up before letting them fall to his sides dramatically.
matt slowly nods his head in sarcastic agreement as he faces his friends, "he's right."
he almost wants to laugh at the fact that chris actually believed his fake-sleeping enough to let him off the hook for "forgetting" their group hangout.
cameron wanders over to the group after taking his turn bowling, “‘kay, nate it’s your turn.” he then quips his chin up with a sudden grin, "hey, matt! about time you showed."
"better late than never," he breathes before joking, "you know i had to let you guys get at least a round in before i got here to start dominating."
“the word choice is a bit insane,” nick exaggerates as he approaches with arms full of bottled water and soda cans, "how about you go get your fucking shoes before you make that kind of claim." he moves around matt to place drinks on the coffee table (decorated with various bowling ball and pin themed clutter that made nick way to happy when first seeing it).
elijah places a hand on matt's shoulder, "i'll come with you, matt."
౨ৎ
"sick baby, i'm home nowww!" andrea yells from the front door.
you mentally gather yourself to continue your deception. you add weight to your eyelids, purposely making them droop and make your voice extra scratchy, as if you'd only just awoken.
andrea's at your door quickly, only tapping it slightly open, not wanting to blind you with the harsh yellowed lighting of the hallway. "hi, you up?"
you tussle under your comforter and give a small nod, "mhm."
"do you think you're like, contagious? i have your soup here and really wanna tell you some shit about tonight." she smiles warmly.
"no you're fine. please come in, i've been all alone and bored as hell," you rub your eye softly for effect.
you feel pretty guilty about this whole thing but you aren't hiding anything tragic from her. and this "illness" hasn't ruined that many hangouts...only the one's that happen to fall on days matt texts you.
"i hate to see my favorite bitch down like this, this soup better make you feel better immediately." she sighs as she comes into your room, noisy plastic bag in hand.
"i know," you lift yourself to sit up against your headboard as she sits next to you, "think i should be all better soon. i can't miss another shift at the bakery."
you were never missing work for matt, but to cover your ass you did miss a day or two of work to show your friends just how "sick" you were. if you were sick enough to stay home from work you surely were sick enough to avoid a girls night or two. but you guess it technically does come down to matt...unfortunately.
"yeah, i'm sure mr. houffman will lose it of you call off again," she giggles, sifting through the bag for your soup and silverware.
౨ৎ
barely a week later and you're feeling the best you have in a while, with the guilt of pretending to be sick no longer following you.
it's the fourth of july so there was absolutely no way you'd be continuing that act. you weren't missing out on a holiday with as many parties as this one.
and when chris asked andrea to get the girls to come party hop for the night, you told her yes immediately.
you're currently sat atop a random kitchen counter as nick moves around to make a concoction cocktail for you. you lean back on your hands to watch as he uses a knife to slice a small lime as garnish. "wow you really have an eye for this shit, nick," you laugh at his focused stare (he tries to compensate for any drinks he's had so far, not wanting to slice a finger off).
"i guess i'm just a natural!" he exclaims as he places the lime on the rim of the plastic cups, "okay, one for you," you take it from him, "and one for me." he grins at you.
"cheers!" you motion your drink towards him and he echoes you before you both take large sips.
your eyes pinch before they grow wide, "...why's it actually...good?" you laugh.
"you bitch! you thought i'd give you a shitty drink?!" he giggles and goes for another sip of his own.
"it's not that-"
you're cut off by matt's voice, "alright, time to dip. everyone's sayin' this place is really weird."
you both look over at him with his mellow attitude and perfectly organized outfit (so that he'd 'have all the colors but not look like a walking american flag'). "what? this place has been a good time so far! right, nick?"
"suppperrrr fun. maybe it's a you problem, matt." he jokes.
"come on, chris is the one who sent me to get you two. you know i would've left you both a few houses back." he teases.
you slide off of the counter easily, "okaaay," you look into his eyes and pat his chest twice mumbling, "someone needs a smoke break," before walking off in search of the door.
"wait y/n!" nick grabs a few sealed jello shots from an ice bucket nearby before rushing after you.
though he doesn't catch up to you before matt does, grabbing your hand, "you don't even know where the fuck you're going."
you breathe out defeated, "i'm sure i could've figured it out. i don't need you bossing me around."
matt pouts with squinted eyes and his head tilted, "sure."
nick comes up to you, continuing to stuff the shots into his jort pockets, "do these shorts make my ass look fat?" he turns to show you his side profile (already giggling before the punchline of his joke lands) that showcases the multiple items shoved into his back pockets and protrude out in awkward shapes.
you and nick both fall into a laughing fit and matt only ghosts a smile at his brother's stupidity before tugging your hand towards an exit. "wait! here, hold this please," you hand your drink to matt and reach your hand out for nick's. when he takes your hand willingly you raise your conjoined hands with a smile, "aw, we're like a little train!"
nick adds to the joke by pretending to be a conductor, exclaiming all the cliche lines he knows to make you laugh.
matt finally pushes a front door open, the warm summer air finally surrounding you once more. the rest of the group chatter along the sidewalk across the street. "my friends!" nick yells.
the three of you make your way down the wooden stairs (that seem to be steeper when going down than they were to walk up), and once you're in the grass your hand drops from matts's as nick drags you across the street quickly to crash into your friends.
remi's face is annoyed and confused at first but changes immediately when she recognizes your face. she throws her arms around you for a hug, "y/n! you were found!" you laugh into her neck as she sways back and forth.
"okay guys i'm thinking we hit up the place that the end of this block, right there. they've got some crazy lights goin' on so it should be fun." chris points in the direction and looks to the group for opinions.
"yeah! let's do it!" nate encourages.
the group begin to walk down the sidewalk (and slightly into the grass) lined with miniature american flags and past the many houses full of people and decorated with fairy lights and expensive garland.
naturally, everyone gravitates into cliques due to the amount of small conversations happening at once.
"that's unreal!" erin adds while hanging her arm on your shoulder, as you both listen to remi's dramatic retelling of some guy's awful flirting with her.
"i''m so over these trash ass men," remi shakes her head.
"tell me about it," erin sighs, rolling her eyes.
just as you begin to add your own opinion, matt taps your shoulder. he seems to always find a way to interrupt you. you glance behind you and see him holding your cocktail from earlier up.
"oh thanks, i forgot you had that," erin leans off of you to give you space to turn around and grab it.
though her eyes linger on matt for a second too long causing him to send her a smile and raise his eyebrows slightly in awkward question.
you feel the tension bite at the air around you and in hopes of escaping it, you turn back around and prompt remi with a new topic to discuss.
only, now you miss when erin gives matt a second glance back- and this time she offers a gentle wave and smile to him, in truce.
౨ৎ
after a few more stops at parties (you all got a little greedy about the free drinks and food which brought three extra "one more"s before deciding to cut it off), you all head to a nearby park to end the night with a firework show.
it was surprisingly well organized, with blankets already laid out around the large grassy area so that anyone could sit and watch whether they'd planned to or not.
the night has started to get the slightest bit cooler which was much needed after such an eventful three hours, leaving everyone exhausted in their comfortable spots; chris resting his head against andrea's full thighs, you next to her with your legs sprawled and arms extended behind you, nick and nathan both sat with their legs crossed, admiring the bright fireworks despite nick's flinching every-so-often.
the blanket next to you hosts erin, remi, matt, and cameron. all laying out as they laugh and talk, which you assume comes from a combination of the edibles they'd all taken at one of the parties and remi's addictingly outgoing nature that can force anyone to want to talk to her.
the booming fireworks go on for another twenty minutes before dying down and leaving the crowd in the dark, smokey air.
as you adjust to standing and take out your phone to use as a makeshift flashlight, you read the most recent of your many notifcations:
MATT - 12:36 AM
you down to paint after this???
you bite at your freshly chapped bottom lip before looking over to matt, who's currently using his hands obnoxiously to explain something he's clearly passionate about to cameron.
you sliently sigh before replying:
YOU -12:47 AM
sure

thin ice — one
Tumblr media
part one | part two | part three
summary — she didn’t handle the sports section of the campus newspaper, but apparently, she did this week. interviewing hockey players was easy, though—unless one of those players happened to be peter parker.
pairing — uni hockey player!peter parker x fem!journalist!reader
disclaimers — i don’t own peter parker. and pls don't come for me with the accuracy of this situation i'm begging
warnings — reader is referred to as ‘kitty’ (there’s a reason, i promise), slight one sided enemies to lovers, sewer slide jokes (very briefly), possible maybe slightly ooc, and very unedited
Tumblr media
“You’re joking. You’re pulling the biggest prank I’ve ever seen, you are the impractical joker,” she huffs out, her eyes wide as furiously clicks her mouse, “I’m gonna die. I’m writing the note tonight—farewell, my lovely!”
“Woah, okay,” MJ, her roommate, had only just entered the room when she was bombarded with a sudden rant. She didn’t even have time to take down her ponytail of thin, red braids before her eardrums were assaulted.
“I mean it.” Spinning her chair, she meets MJ’s eyes.
“I literally just got here,” MJ plops down on the bed in front of the desk, “Care to tell me why you’re writing that note?”
“I’m a dumb, dumb girl, that’s why,” she groans in response.
“We already knew that.” MJ’s words only cause the girl in front of her to shoot daggers with her gaze; “Sorry, sorry. Why are you a dumb, dumb girl?”
“God, okay, so,” she lets out a loud sigh, “Eli is gonna be gone for the rest of the month—Europe or something, good for him. Anyways, they needed someone to cover his assignments for him until he gets back, and I volunteered, but, like, only to be nice, y’know? I did it as an obligation. But…”
“But?” MJ pressed.
“I just got an email, and it’s me,” she grumbled, “They’re putting me on Eli’s assignments.”
“Hm, I see,” MJ’s lips curl into a frown as she gently rubs the girl’s arm, “Too much work?”
“Oh, no, my stuff’s easy,” she waved her off, “Just reading the poetry submissions. I mean, it can be exhausting, but it’s not too bad.”
“Then what is it?” MJ cocks her head.
“Eli…Eli does sports,” she shuddered. MJ couldn’t contain the loud laugh that slipped out, clamping a hand over her mouth to stifle it.
“You’re worried about sports?” She giggles, her eyes twinkling.
“It’s not funny!” She smacks MJ lightly, “Sports aren’t unbearable or anything, but, like, why me? I don’t know enough! I’ll screw it up, I’ll lose my spot, they’ll stick me back in—”
“Relax,” MJ grabs her shoulders, bringing her closer, “First off, no, you won’t lose your spot, we both know they’d be losing their minds without you. Second, they wouldn’t just throw it on you if they thought you’d give them bad work, right?” She eyes MJ almost suspiciously. There’s a momentary stare-down before she relents.
“I hate that you’re right,” she sighs, spinning her chair around. MJ stops the spin by putting her hands down on the arms of the chair.
“Thought you’d be used to it by now,” she giggles, “So, what do you have to do?”
“I don’t know.” Is the mumbled reply.
“You didn’t even look?” MJ laughs again, “You were losing your mind, and you didn’t even know what you’re doing?”
“I’m sorry that I’m sensitive,” she huffs. Her gaze moves back to the laptop before her. The email is open on the screen, so she begins scrolling through it, MJ reading the words over her shoulder. Her eyes nearly bulge out of her head when she gets to the end.
“Fuck this,” she almost slams her laptop shut, but is stopped short by MJ.
“Slow down!” The redhead slaps her hand out of the way to read the rest of the email.
The ESU hockey team had made it to the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey tournament for the first time in six years—and they were doing damn good. Eli had been tasked with interviewing the team captain as well as a few other star players, but, of course, it was no longer Eli's job.
"Oh, come on,” MJ rolled her eyes, “They gave you a Google Doc with questions, all you have to do is ask them and write down their response."
“That's the problem, I have to ask,” she shivered.
"You've done interviews before!" MJ was ready to smack her.
"With professors! And cool artsy people! Not hockey guys," she cringed, “I bet half of them are in a frat. They're probably gonna be assholes and tell me I have cooties."
“Are you twelve?” MJ groaned, “You sort of lucked out with this—half the work is already done for you! You don’t need to write up any questions!” A sigh left her lips as she took on a more comforting tone: “If it makes you feel any better, Harry is on the team.”
Ah, Harry. MJ had been seeing him for a little over a month by now. He wasn’t a bad guy at all. A little full of himself, but nice enough to talk to. Her eyes roved over the list of players she was set to interview. Sure enough, Harry Osborn was there. So was Miles Morales, who was described as an extremely promising freshman. Zack Coleson, who had the highest number of goals for the season. Last on the list was the team captain: Peter Parker.
“I can talk to Harry,” MJ offered, “I can let him know that it’s you doing the interviews. I’ll make sure he tells them to go easy on you—”
“No, no,” she shook her head, “That might make it worse. And they already know that it’s not Eli coming. Or they should, at least”
“You sure?” MJ quirked a brow, her features crinkling in a way that was only intelligible as concern.
“They’ll be walking on eggshells around me if they know I’m chickenshit, I won’t get a good interview,” she sighed. Even if the interview wasn’t what she wanted to do, she was going to have to. And she would do a good job—a great job.
“You got this, Kitty,” MJ squeezed her shoulders. The nickname pulled a smile from her, and she gave into MJ’s touch.
“We’ll see about that,” she relented. Her eyes traveled back to the computer screen. The interviews were scheduled two days from now at the Stark Memorial Rink.
“Hey, MJ,” she hummed, “Could you grab me my noose?”
Tumblr media
The rink was colder than she expected. The empty stands provided no body heat, not to mention there was a literal sheet of ice on the floor. Tugging at the strap of her messenger bag, she took slow, careful steps to the plexiglass.
Clink.
Her eyes widened. There were around ten to fifteen guys in full gear out on the ice, and another ten to fifteen more on a bench near the glass or flitting around the edge of the rink. She was nervous, so she got there early. Now, she was stuck watching them practice.
Leaving was so tempting. She could go back to her dorm, or better yet, leave college entirely. She could just give up and fall off the grid, cut her credit cards, throw her phone in the ocean, sail off to Greece—
“Hello?”
She cursed the muffled voice that pulled her back into reality. Blinking, she found that standing before her was one of the very hockey players she’d seen skating on the rink before her. He was tall, and gear under his black and purple jersey made him appear far more bulkier than she theorized he was. He slipped his helmet off to reveal brown, curly hair that was drenched in sweat.
“Hi,” she replied, trying not to sound as nervous as he would. He cocked his head at her as he popped out his mouth guard.
“This is a closed practice,” he said, though, he didn’t sound all too upset that she was here.
“Oh, yeah, I know,” she nodded quickly, her fingers toying with the strap of her bag again, “I’m a bit early, I’m supposed to be interviewing some people on the team. I’m—”
“Kitty?” She was interrupted by the sound of a voice as well as skates scraping across the ice. Glancing past the guy in front of her, she saw Harry slide off the ice and clomp to benches where they currently were.
“Hey, Harry.” Her lips were screwed up in a tight grin. He’d heard MJ call her Kitty once, and now it was the only thing he’d refer to her as.
“Kitty?” Mystery guy repeated the name with a hint of intrigue.
“It’s not my real name, my friends just call me that,” she shook her head.
“What’re you doing here?” Harry asked, swinging an arm around the shoulder of the guy in front of her.
“I’m Eli’s replacement,” she explained, trying to plaster a friendly smile to her lips, “I’m doing the interviews.”
“Aw, shit, why didn’t MJ tell me we got the cool Kitty-cat on the case?” Harry grinned.
“Could you try to never say those words again? Really hated it, thanks,” her nose crinkled.
“You got it.” He tried to point finger guns at her, but with the thick gloves on, it just looked like he was pointing his whole hand.
“Hey,” he started up again, “You’re a little early, so practice isn’t over yet, but we’re almost done. It’s just the four of us, right?”
“Right,” she nodded in response. It was a relief that they’d been briefed on the situation.
“Alright, well, I’m Harry, obviously, Miles and Zack are on the ice somewhere, and this right here—” Harry jostled the shoulders of the Mystery guy, “—is Peter. Oh captain, my captain!”
Peter chuckled as Harry clapped him on the back. The noise that emanated from the friendly hit was harsh, but Peter didn’t move a muscle.
“Right,” she nodded, “So, I figured we could do them individually? There’s some sort of specific questions for each of you.”
“Sounds good, Kitty,” Harry replied. She’d smack him if he said that name again.
“Sit tight for a bit,” Peter spoke up. Even with the stubble on his chin, his smile gave him a boyish appearance. He looked her up and down quickly, “We can try to wrap up practice early.”
'A bit' ended up feeling like forever. At first, she tried to distract herself with her phone, but it didn't work: she would open apps, scroll through them, then close them just to reopen them over and over again. So she organized her bag, which took about five minutes. Time seemed to tic by in a tauntingly slow manner. It was only when she saw a few of the players emerge from the locker room did she let out a breath of relief. She immediately sucked that breath back when she realized that she would actually have to talk to some of them.
Harry went first. It was easy enough to go through the questions with him. It was like talking to an over-eager relative at a family reunion, one who was just dying to talk about all the new things they're doing. Miles wasn't all that bad to interview, either. He was a lot more nervous than she was. His awkward pauses and constant strings of 'um' and 'uh' was almost comforting. Then came Peter.
"Kitty," he grinned as soon as he saw her seated on the bench next to the rink. He no longer wore his gear—just a hoodie and a pair of gray sweats. His hair, however, was still wet and tousled. She gave him a tight lipped smile in return.
"That's not my name," she replied. Before she had time to properly introduce herself, his raspy chuckle was already echoing through the open arena.
"You said that's what your friends call you, right?" He cocked his head as he sat down on the other edge of the bench.
"You're not—” If she could just make it through the interview without fuss, she'd be one person away from being free, "—right. That's what my friends call me."
"I'm going to be recording this, just so I can reference it later," she explained almost monotonously.
"This isn't my first time," he responded with another light laugh. She had to physically bite her tongue to fight off any comments. A soft click sounded from her phone as she started a new voice memo. Her eyes scanned the list of questions on the page before her. Some she'd already asked to Harry and Miles: How does it feel to make the tournament? What is the atmosphere of the team right now? She chose a fresh question to start with.
"What's it like to be the captain of this team? Are you proud? Overwhelmed?" She asked, her voice taking on a new tone closer to a news anchor than a regular person. Peter's lips curled up at the change.
"I'm proud, yeah," he nodded, his voice smooth, "This is a great group. But we all work our asses off, so I'm not surprised by how far we've come. Being their captain is really something."
"And—"
"Do you normally do sports? For the paper, I mean." Before she could even get her next sentence out, he interrupted her. Her grip on the papers in her hand tightened.
"No, not normally," she grit out, "And going along with your thoughts on being captain, what about making it to the tournament this year?"
"It's the best feeling in the world. It's something I've been chasing after for years now, finally getting to it is just...sort of indescribable." Even when his tone is nothing but sincere, he can't wipe the cocky grin from his lips.
"I can imagine," she smiled tautly in reply, "What was it like working your way up to captain? Was it a personal journey, or did you get support from the team?"
"I'd say it was an even mix of both," he hummed, "Do you like hockey?"
"What?" She furrowed her brows.
"Are you a hockey fan?" He reiterated, "Because our next game is home, and it's sort of packed, but I could get you some tickets assuming you don't have some already—"
"No—Peter," she let out a frustrated huff, tapping on her phone to momentarily pause the recording, "This is an interview, not social hour."
"Aren't interviews inherently social?" His smirk was infuriating.
"I mean that I ask the questions, you answer them," she grumbled, "Do you act like this with Eli? Are you not taking me serious because I'm a woman?"
"What?" His smirk fell immediately, "What? No—no. I'm taking you seriously, I take women very seriously. I'm all for women. They're great."
"Then can we just do this interview and get it over with?" She sighed, her finger hovering over the unpause button. He nodded, but before she could resume the interview, he quickly added: "But do you want tickets?"
Ignoring the question, she carried on. Peter seemed to mellow out after a while and didn't interrupt again. It was almost surprising how well he'd listened: he was giving her real, insightful answers to her questions without a hint of flirtation. The final interview with Zack flowed easily, and she fled Stark Memorial Rink as quick as she could.
Transcribing the interviews was the easiest part. Days later, she would be hunched over her computer in the darkness of her shared dorm, playing and replaying the recordings and typing out the words onto the screen. Her concentration was briefly interrupted, though, when the door opened and a stream of light threaded its way through the room and onto the back of her head.
"Light bad!" She slapped her hands over her eyes, "Light very bad!"
"You're gonna go blind if you keep staring at your computer in the dark," MJ spoke in a warning tone, but ultimately closed the door.
"Then blind I must go," she sighed, swiveling on her chair to look at her roommate, "How was class?"
"Normal," MJ shrugged, sliding her bag off her shoulders, "But I have a little something for you."
"Something for little ol' me?" She gasped in dramatized delight.
"Yes," MJ grinned widely as her hand reached for the zipper of her bag, "Close your eyes."
She obliged immediately, her nose scrunched in anticipation, "I hope it's a million dollars. Is it a million dollars? Am I close?"
"Almost," MJ giggled. After a moment of anticipation, MJ gently grabbed her hands and place something into them. It was thin and papery and rectangular. Opening her eyes, she looked down to see a white envelope with 'Kitty' written out on the front. Her brows furrowed at the unfamiliar handwriting.
"Is there a check for a million dollars inside?" She asked as she cocked her head.
"No clue, it's not from me," MJ shrugged.
"Then who's it from?" Her fingers slid under the lip of the envelope.
"Harry gave it to me to give to you," MJ grinned, "He said it's from Peter."
She should've sailed to Greece when she had the chance. Inside the envelope were two tickets—Empire State University versus Pennbrook University this Saturday at seven. A long groan left her lips before she finally met MJ's eyes.
"You never got me that noose I asked for."

what we used to be |  l
Tumblr media
Pairing: Eli Moskowitz x Fem!Reader
Summary: You meet a new kid and your feelings for your best friend are said aloud.
Warnings: mentions of bullying, mentions of slut shaming, implications of violence, implications of strict parents
Word Count: 3k
A/N: Starting my first ever series for Eli! I always wanted to do a series following his story line in the show along with a female character so I did! I'm aware of other series being done like this by other writers on here, but this will be my own unique twist. There are similarities because it does follow the show's storyline but different because of my own interpretations!
I don't consent to this work being copied, translated or reposted.
“If the limit never approaches anything, then the limit does not exist,” you listened to Eli as he helped you with your math homework. “But in this case, it does, so what is it?” he pointed at the problem on the sheet.
“Two?” you furrowed your brows, trying your best not to sound like you were guessing.
“C’mon, Y/N, you’re in Calculus for a reason,” he encouraged.
“Only because I passed Trig with an 89, they only let me in because of pity,” you frowned.
Calculus has been your enemy since the beginning of the semester. You really didn’t want to take the class in the first place but your parents had been adamant about you taking higher-level classes. You would’ve been fine filling up your schedule with more creative art classes like ceramics and photography, but that wasn’t the agreement.
Math and science classes were part of the agreement.
Thankfully, you had two smart best friends who helped you whenever you had trouble.
“My advice?” Demetri spoke up.
You and Eli glanced at him, a knowing look on both your faces.
To be honest, while you had two best friends, only one was good at helping you out.
Demetri on the other hand? He had a habit of giving unsolicited advice. But because you loved him, you tolerated and actually encouraged him to hear what he had to say.
“Rewatch Mean Girls,” he deadpanned.
You let out a chuckle. “What I’m hearing is, that you guys are agreeing to watch it for our next movie night,” you grinned.
Both boys groaned.
“I’m fine watching your sci-fi, superhero films, but a girl needs her rom coms and chick flicks,” you mused.
Being the only girl and having vastly different interests compared to the guys, there were moments where you felt outnumbered. Sometimes you have to plead for one movie night to be your pick.
“I’d be down for Mean Girls this Friday,” Eli shrugged.
You silently clapped your hands, face creeping up with heat when you and Eli made eye contact.
“Demitiri?” you turned your attention to your other best friend.
After a minute, he rolled his eyes, agreeing.
“This Friday, my place,” you grinned. “Both my parents will be having a date night, so we’ll have the place to ourselves,”.
“Are you sure your dad will allow that?” Demetri cocked a brow. “That man is scary and I don’t want to know what will happen when he sees his daughter home alone with two boys,” he shuddered.
“He won’t mind, he likes you guys,” you attempted to reassure. “Besides, we’re just watching a movie,”.
“We know that, but will he?” Demetri asked in a mix of sarcasm and sincerity.
“C’mon, my dad isn’t that scary,” you trailed.
“I-I don’t think he likes me very much,” Eli said quietly.
“He does,” you straightened up. “Don’t worry about my dad guys, you’ve known him for ten years,” you stated.
You watched as the boys avoided your gaze, the sound of the cafeteria surrounded you when they both fell silent. Leaning back in your seat, you wondered why they were bringing this up now.
Like he read your mind, Demetri spoke up, “I’m just pointing out an observation I’ve noticed for the last few years. The older we get, the more of a threat your dad thinks we are,” he explained. “Guess it’s the raging teenage hormones!” he gestured with his hands, joking at the end.
Eli’s lips spread out into a smirk.
Relaxing, you shook your head at the way your best friend acted, even though you found the joke to be funny.
For the next few minutes, Eli went on to explain limits to you. You were about to ask a question when a new presence stopped you.
“Hey, can I sit here?”
You all turned your attention to a kid with dark hair and brown eyes, a tray in his hand as he gestured at the empty seat next to Eli.
You were about to welcome him until Demitri beat you to it.
“Check back next semester as you can see we’re entirely booked,” he said sarcastically but the new kid didn’t catch it.
With a sigh and a roll of his eyes, he was about to walk away.
“He’s kidding, you can sit,” you gestured to the empty seat. “I’m Y/N, that’s Demitri and Eli,” you introduced.
“Miguel,” he nodded.
Just then, Yasmine and her entourage walked passed, causing Miguel to go into a trance.
You frowned at his reaction. You hated that just cause they were pretty, it forgave all the terrible things they’ve done to your friends and you.
“You’re just torturing yourself,” Demetri warned. “They’re the rich girls”.
“Do you talk to them or…?” Miguel asked.
“Yeah, all the time,” Demetri feigned a smirk. “We hang out after school, make out,” he shrugged. “Eli is homecoming king, and gets laid more than anyone”.
You rolled your lips together, glancing at your lap.
“You pretty much signed away all hopes of losing your virginity before college the moment you sat at this table,” he frowned.
Comments like that reminded you that boys will be boys. In the sense that virginity is still frowned upon. The societal pressure to lose it before a certain age disgusted you.
What happened to not conforming to society's rules?
“Oh, great, Yasmine is looking at us,” Eli narrowed in on himself, his voice pulling you out of your thoughts. “Probably making fun of me”.
“I wouldn’t assume that,” you reassured. “She’s always going to have that nasty look on her face,” you grimaced.
Then you made eye contact with her.
She whispered something to Moon, causing both of them to burst out laughing.
You figured she was making fun of you again, calling you a slut or whatever. Dropping your gaze to your food, you checked your phone for the time.
“I gotta go, it was nice meeting you,” you smiled towards Miguel as you got up.
“What about your homework?” Eli asked.
“I got limits now,” you attempted to reassure but your composure fell when you accidentally looked Yasmine’s way. “Besides I have to get my sketch done before class,” you hoisted your bag over your shoulder.
Art was your passion. Since you could talk, you could draw. Your best friends might’ve been computer nerds, but you? You were an artistic geek.
Still, as talented as you were, Yasmine and Moon used that area of your life to make fun of you. Whether it was a silly doodle you drew during class or an actual piece you worked your ass off for class.
They tried to diminish your spirit with your art, but thankfully you haven’t lost it yet.
Shaking your head to brush the thoughts away, you gulped down the lump in your throat and managed to make your way down the hall to your art class twenty minutes early.
While you were gone from the lunchroom, the conversation at the table shifted, focusing on you.
“Do you like her or something?” Miguel asked Eli.
The awkward boy stilled at the newcomer’s question, opting to fidget with his fingers while staring at his tray. He didn’t think he was being obvious, the only other person who knew of his infatuation with you was Demetri.
“He’s been in love with her since they met in kindergarten, her too but they’re too scared to admit it,” Demetri answered for him. “I think they’ll get married before either of them admit they do like each other,”.
It was true.
You liked Eli and Eli liked you.
The moment you laid eyes on him on the playground, that was it for the two of you. But both of you are socially awkward, insecure people…neither of you had the guts to tell each other how you truly feel.
Leaving Demetri to stand and watch at the mutual pining unwind for the last ten years.
“I’m not in love with her,” Eli defended. “Besides, she wouldn’t ever like someone like me,” he folded in on himself.
“You won’t know if you never strike first,” Miguel tried to reason.
“Good luck with getting Eli to do that,” Demerit said.
Eli sighed, keeping his gaze down. As much as he wanted to argue, he knew deep down that his friend was right.
~
“Keep this door open,” your dad barked quickly followed by your mother scolding him.
The door had been half-way opened, or half-way closed, when he walked past. He decided it wasn’t to his standards so he made sure the door was wide, banging it against the adjacent wall.
“Sorry,” you said, not looking up from your notebook.
You were sitting in your room, Eli helping you study for your Clac quiz tomorrow. It was a routine for the two of you, hanging out after school and doing homework. Quality time well spent and you wouldn’t have it any other way.
Sometimes Demetri would join but he decided to play Dungeon Lord after school today. Part of you was happy to hear he wouldn’t be joining.
Especially when that meant you spent more time with Eli. Meaning there would be more brief moments where your shoulders or knees would brush. Which would send butterflies straight to your tummy.
“Miguel seems nice,” Eli shrugged, placing his pen down. “He mentioned something about karate, he wants all of us to join,” he smiled lightly.
“Really?” you smirked. “What did Demetri say to that?” you laughed, knowing he had some highlighted opinions about it.
“Wasn’t on board, but I don’t know,” he glanced down. “Maybe it could be fun,” he said.
“If you want to,” you passed him a smile. “It’d be nice to see you kick Kyler’s ass for once,” you sighed, glancing at the problem in your book.
You missed the way he frowned but he continued, “You should join too,”.
“Me?” your eyes widened and you glanced up to meet his gaze.
“Yeah,” he cracked a grin. One that was big and genuine, something that only happened in front of you or Demetri. “You’d be great at kicking ass too,” he reasoned.
“In my dreams,” you huffed out a laugh. “I can barely do a push-up,” you shook your head.
“Maybe just think about it,” he suggested.
“Okay, I will,” you nodded. “So, how am I doing?” you licked your lips.
You pushed your notebook between the two of you.
Both of you leaned in, your shoulders brushing against each other. Anytime you inhaled, you smelled him.
He smelled nice.
“You’re doing good, you just need to remember that an open circle means the limit exists but not in the function,” he pointed at the problem you got wrong.
“Stupid circles,” you huffed out a breath, running a hand over your hair. “Thanks again, Eli,” you pressed your lips into a soft smile.
“You’re going to do great, okay?” he nudged his elbow with yours.
“Okay,” you nodded, allowing yourself to believe.
You went over the material for a few minutes, your mind getting lost in all things limits and functions.
Unbestowent to you though, Eli was watching you.
He watched the way your nose would scrunch when you didn’t understand what you read the first time around. The way your lashes fluttered as you scanned the page. The way you would lick your lips in concentration. The way you would crack your knuckles when they got too stiff.
He was utterly in love with you.
Being friends for ten years, you’d reach that point without even dating. Even if it was just puppy love, he knew one thing for sure—he likes you, a lot.
He doubted himself when he thought about what Demetri said. And when he thought about the comment Kyler made earlier of him being a loser. He had come home crying, knowing he was never going to get a girlfriend because of the way he looked. But then his mind thought to Miguel.
Maybe he could be wrong, maybe he could get a girlfriend. Maybe it could be you.
Without second-guessing any further, he opened his mouth.
“Hey, Y/N?” he cleared his throat.
“Yeah?” you reached your gaze to his, your head resting in your palm.
“I like you,” he confessed, face going pale at the fact that he actually said that to you.
Your eyes went wide, face blank as you took in his words. You didn’t say anything for a few moments, just staring at your best friend.
“I-you know, never mind, I shouldn’t have said anything,” he felt embarrassed, shaking his head as he went back to his homework.
“Wait!” you reached out and touched his arm. “I like you too,” you gulped, a smile creeping up on your face.
“Really?” he seemed taken aback.
You nodded enthusiastically.
The two of you gazed at each other for what felt like a few minutes until you bent over in giggles, still in disbelief.
“I’m glad you told me,” you reached for his hand on your desk, squeezing it.
“Me too,” he squeezed it back.
You felt your cheeks heat up before you turned back to your work.
The rest of the night was spent with the two of you doing work, holding hands.
~
The next day at school, Eli was sitting with Demetri and Miguel.
Having just told the news about you and him, he was feeling a little proud of himself that he actually did it.
And more relieved that you actually reciprocate his feelings.
“I was right, wasn’t I?” Demetri raised a brow.
Eli smiled, his cheeks turning pink while Miguel laughed.
“I’m glad someone took my advice, now you see my Sensei is legit,” Miguel pointed out.
Eli nodded, a small smile on his face.
“I’m gonna need more evidence to back it up,” Demerit crossed his arms over his chest. “This,” he gestured to Eli, “has been a work in progress for ten years, your words of encouragement just gave him enough push,” he scoffed.
About to respond, Eli was stopped by the smell of your perfume. He turned his head to the left just in time to greet you as you approached the table.
“Hi, guys,” you greeted, taking your seat next to Eli. “Hi, Eli,” your cheeks warmed up.
“Hi, Y/N,” his eyes beamed with admiration. “You look nice,” he blushed, glancing over the pretty green sundress you wore today, but his gaze circled back to your face.
“Thanks,” you glanced down, running a hand over the skirt. “It’s been in my closet for a while, I figured it’d be happy to see the light of day,” you shrugged, unaware he wasn’t talking about the dress.
“You should wear it more often,” Eli commented.
Demetri and Miguel sent each other a knowing look before Miguel decided to cut the awkward lovey-dovey talk.
“So, Y/N, did Eli tell you about joining my karate dojo?”
You focused your gaze on him, the warmth of your cheeks dissolving when your mind was pushed away from Eli. “Uh, yeah,” you smiled. “I thought about it, but I don’t know if I want to do something like that. I need my hands for my art, I don’t want them beaten and bruised,” you stifled a laugh.
Miguel nodded in understanding. “Thanks for thinking about it, Y/N,” he pressed his lips in a smile.
“No problem. Anyway, do you want to join us for movie night this Friday?” you extended your invitation to him. “You can pick the movie,” you offered.
“Sure, I’d like that,” he grinned.
“Awesome”.
~
Friday came around and you were all seated on your couch in the living room watching Spider-Man.
You actually enjoyed the pick, especially watching the nerdy boy become the hero. One who reminded you a lot of the boy sitting right next to you.
Miguel was on the recliner, Demetri on the other end of the couch, and Eli in the middle with you on the other side. Except, Eli was scooted closer to you, only a bowl of popcorn separating the two of you.
Your hands happened to brush a lot when you’d reach for the popcorn. Though, you didn’t mind.
You had gotten to the part where Peter Parker discovered his powers, a glass in your hand as you had come back from refilling your drink.
“That’s a cool painting,” Miguel noticed the piece of art framed by the TV.
It was an oceanscape of the beach.
“Y/N painted it,” Eli stated.
“No kidding,” Miguel said in amazement, standing up to study it. “You’re really talented, Y/N,” he smiled over to you.
“Thanks, that was my first one so my parents framed it,” you shyly said.
“You should see her sketchbook, it’s filled with the most awesome things,” Eli smiled.
You glanced at him, sending him a thankful look.
“Can I see?” Miguel’s eyes beamed. “My yaya loves paintings, I’d love to show her your work,” he said.
“Yeah, I’ll grab some that you could take pictures of,” you stood up, cheeks on fire.
It wasn’t often that you got praised for your art, mainly from your parents or your friends. So this was new. But you took the pleasure from it nonetheless.
Heading to your room, you grabbed a few of your favorite paintings before you went to your bag in search of your sketchbook, only you couldn’t find it.
As panic erupted, you thought back to the last time you saw it. You had it in art class and then you went to P.E. You could’ve sworn you had it then, but you guessed you were wrong.
“I can’t find my sketchbook,” you gulped, walking back to the living room.
“Maybe you left it in your locker or someone found it and took it to the lost and found,” Miguel offered, gesturing with his hands.
“Yeah, it’ll turn up,” Demetri reassured. “I don’t think anyone would have wanted to steal it,” he shrugged.
“We’ll help you find it on Monday,” Eli said, reaching for your hand.
“Thanks, guys,” you blew out your breath.
You were glad you had them and you really hoped your sketchbook turned up.
Part of you didn’t want to think about it, but you were worried about who had it if they did. And it only traced back to two girls.

Have an amazing day, sending all my love!! - Mo
You could have killed him. You really could have. Truly. Truly you could have.
The ‘small apartment’ Alfie described was in fact a gorgeous row house about a block away from his own home, and two blocks away from the office. It had a beautiful garden in the back, with a dark red oak door in the front. Three stories. With enough room for each couple to have their own room, and Eli could finally have his own room instead of sleeping on the floor in the parlor. The home came fully furnished, and Alfie made sure that previous customers knew where to find your father and uncle, so the business could continue while the shop was being repaired.
And if he couldn’t have been more incorrigible, “someone” had “donated” three new dolls for Esther, which were perfectly placed on her new bed in the room you and her would share.
As your family walked around in awe of the rich space, you hung back, tight lipped. It was far too much. It was an enormous expense. And he acted as if he had nothing to do with it and it was nothing. You really could kill him.
“Alfie… how much does this cost you?”, you murmur to him, refusing to look at him.
“That’s none of your concern sweet heart.”
“It absolutely is. I balance the book.”
“And I correct your math.”
“Alfie this is far too-“
“It is exactly what is needed. I’m not about to argue with you in front of your parents.”
“We’ll never be able to repay you Alfie. It isn’t fair to you.”
“Woman the agreement is already made and it was a good agreement. Now I have someone who will fix my shirts since you refuse to.”
“Because I’m your secretary not your wife.”
Alfie scoffed and rolled his eyes, “You’re the source for every new ulcer, that’s what you are. Secretary is supposed to make my life better and she makes my life a living hell.”
You couldn’t help but smile. You let your eyes wander to him, to see that he was already staring at you, “What?”
He taps his cane against your ankle, “You like it?”
You nod, pressing your lips together. The cane touching your ankle and his body coming closer making your neck hot.
Alfie knew that he shouldn’t get closer. But your family was upstairs, no one would be a witness. He needed to be closer. You were barely whispering. He needed to get closer to you, “My house isn’t far. I’ll always be able to come. If you need me.”
“You said you would have someone outside every night.”
“They ain’t as good as me though yeah?”
“No.”
Your eyes needed to break from his gaze. It was becoming so warm in the house. His knuckles press your chin to look up at him, “I’ll always come. Understand?”
You nod again, unable to look away from his deep blue eyes, “Yes Alfie.”
The silence envelops you, and you feel something is about to be confessed, when Esther comes charging through, “Sissy! Sissy! Look at my new dollys! Mr. Solomons got me new dollys!”
She jumped into your arms, so ecstatic about her new treasures. They were beautiful, with silky hair and darling cotton dresses. She couldn’t have yearned for anything finer, “They are lovely my sweet girl! Have you thanked Mr. Solomons for the presents?”
Esther, ever the little spitfire, threw herself from your arms and into Alfie’s, causing him to drop the cane in the process to catch her, “Thank you Mr. Solomons! I really love them!”
Alfie thankfully got his footing right, boosting Esther more on his good hip, “Hush now chicken it had nothing to do with me! But I’m happy you like them. They’ll have a riot with you yeah?”
She nodded ferociously, “Mr. Solomons will you stay for our tea party?”
Your face flushed with slight embarrassment, Alfie Solomons has probably never been asked to a tea party in his life. Much less an Esther tea party. Which involved lengthy backstories and horridly torrid affairs for each doll. A party could last a whole afternoon. But Alfie Solomons merely chuckled, patting down the soft curls on Esther’s head, “Well chicken while that sounds absolutely lovely yeah, I unfortunately cannot make it today. You will have to let your guests know, and give them my apologies.”
Esther pouted, “Why not?”
He began to explain when you heard your mother call out, “Mr. Solomons! I hope you are not leaving already!”
You shut your eyes, hoping that this was a bad dream that you were going to wake up from soon. Up until this morning, you had managed to keep your life with Alfie and your life with your family separate. Both lovely and warm but incompatible in your mind. Your mother could not be seriously about to ask him to stay.
Alfie slowly set Esther down, mussing her short hair, “I’m afraid I must Mrs. Abraham. There’s business I must attend to and I don’t want to overstay.”
Your mother merely grabbed a hold of your father’s arm, “Mr. Solomons you have not eaten yet! It’s late afternoon and you must be exhausted as we are. Please let us make something, nothing too fancy but you should sit and let us make lunch for everyone.”
“Now really Mrs. Abraham I-“
“Mr. Solomons I know you are a big man but I really cannot let you leave without a meal. Now please sit down at this beautiful table you have gifted us and let us make you lunch.”
It was in that moment that Alfie noticed that you and your mother got the same look in your eyes when determined. The corner of your lip crooked the same. You surely didn’t notice, and Alfie would never tell you, but it was as though Alfie saw an image of you 20 years from now. Alfie smiled, “Alright alright if you insist. Mr. Abraham I hope I’m not inconveniencing yeah?”
Your father shook his head, “Not at all Mr. Solomons. Please, let’s get acquainted with this table together.”
Your mother said a simple lunch. But it turned into a whole affair. Alfie also failed to mention that the kitchen was stocked enough for a whole week. Your mother went above and beyond with you and your aunt and grandmother to make one of the most healing meals you had ever had. Roasted chicken and vegetables. Hot bread. Strong tea. You had even made a fresh apple tart for dessert, which Alfie helped himself to three slices.
You had never imagined this happening. But yet it was. Alfie was at your family’s dinner table. Laughing. Telling stories. Listening to others. Serving your grandmother and grandfather. If there wasn’t the base lie of you being under his employ, this would have felt so natural. Your mother sat him next to you, and your mind went miles and miles ahead. What it would be like if there wasn’t the lie there. If Alfie was there not as an employer but as a regular man. As someone who was sweet on you and wanting to be a part of this family. You yearned to reach your hand to his under the table, weaving your fingers together and feeling the callouses and scars of his knuckles.
Little did you know, Alfie’s thoughts were parallel to yours. You never noticed, but his eyes never left you. Watching the way you teased your family, doted on Esther, argued with Eli, laughing in that way that shook the walls. It made his heart race just watching you, seeing you be so free.
As the lunch turned into dinner and turned into evening, your father then asked, “Dearest, how far is your office from here do you think? Do you and Eli need to see what the walk will look like?”
Before you could answer, Alfie saved you from stammering, “Mr. Abraham, her boss is actually located right next to my bakery. If you’d permit me, I’d be happy to walk her to work and back. Just to make sure she’s safe?”
Your mother perked up,”oh would you Mr. Solomons? I hate to see her walking alone down the street.”
You raised your eyes at your mother, “Mama! Please I can walk myself to work!”
Your mother raised her hands, “This is a new neighborhood and you don’t know the way! Why would you dispose of a blessing??”
“Mama Mr. Solomons is very busy he does not need to trouble himself with me.”
You and your mother proceeded to volley back and forth. A common occurrence between you two, which no one cared to come between. It wasn’t until Alfie put his hand between the two of you that you settled, “Now now please Miss Abraham, your mother is quite right. It’s a new part of Camden for you, and you just experienced a terrible accident. I will not push it eh, you can make your own decision. But it will not be a trouble at all for me. And I’m sure your boss will be very invested in making sure that his nice secretary makes it to and from the office safely yeah?”
Alfie tried to hide his smirk as your nostrils flared, a habit that he noticed during one of your first arguments with him. He loved it almost as much as he loved your laughter. You finally relented after 3 beats, “If you believe it is best Mama, yes Mr. Solomons… I would be grateful for an escort to work.”
Alfie clapped his hands together, “Lovely. I will be here promptly at 7:30 tomorrow morning. Mr and Mrs Abraham, this was an absolute treat. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten so well. Ishmael will be downstairs keeping watch over the gate tonight. Shalom everyone, sleep well!”
Everyone gave their goodbyes, until your mother spoke up, “Dear please walk Mr. Solomons to the gate.”
You gave your mother a look, which she quickly reciprocated with more fervor. Inhaling deep you acquiesce, walking Alfie out to the gate, as if he would ever get lost.
Alfie chuckled as you opened the gate, “Thank you very much sweetie, I would never have found my way out.”
“I am so sorry for their behavior Mr. Solomons. I promise you will never have to endure that again.”
“Oh yes because I would never want to endure that again. A hot meal. People surrounding me that don’t want to kill me.”
“An impromptu tea party?”
“It was lovely actually. Esther is a very gracious hostess, you could take some tips.”
You couldn’t help but laugh, “oh I’m sure I could.”
You find that your eyes meet more and more now. And nothing makes you want to look away. You feel the bite of the cold wind on your shoulder, and you become keenly aware of the cold metal of the gate your rest your hand on. Alfie presses his lips together, and puts his hand on top of yours, rubbing his thumb over your knuckles. You barely hear the gravely murmur, “Get inside little viper. You’ll catch cold”
“I’m not cold.”
“Well your mother will worry.”
“It’s fine.”
He chuckles, “God you’re difficult…Shalom sweet heart. I’ll be here tomorrow.”
You nod, “Shalom Alfie.”
Your hand drags away from his, as you walk backwards back into the home. His eyes never leave your form until you cross the threshold.
As you lay in bed that night, all you can think about are those dark blue eyes. Those full lips shrouded by a coarse and wild beard. Those rough hands against yours. Your mind replayed the feeling of his hands on yours, memorizing the tough callouses and tender touch of his fingers. You told yourself that you couldn’t let your mind go and explore those secret desires. Those secret desires where he wouldn’t just touch your fingers. He’d hold your hand, letting everyone know that you were his. Those imaginings where he wasn’t just your boss, but yours and yours alone. Any moment you weren’t with him, you missed him. You wish that he could stay. Stay for the night. Stay for the morning. That you wouldn’t just give tea at his desk but at his breakfast table. Where he wouldn’t just let his hand hover over your jaw, but caress it. Where you could finally feel that god awful beard on your cheek. Your heart ached terribly. Wishing and wishing that it could be that way. That you could have him. And that he could have you. You tossed and turned, watching the moon make its way across the sky from the window in your room. Your hands clasped by your heart, still feeling the tingle of where his hands were.
Alfie in fact made it to the house at 7:15 the next morning. He emphasized that it was because he just wanted to make sure you weren’t left waiting, but he looked all too smug and comfortable drinking tea with your grandmother, having some of the fresh jam she had made just that morning.
As soon as you were out of window view of your house, you felt like you could finally breathe and speak freely. You were worried to a certain extent that Alfie would treat the relationship you had differently. As if you were some sort of charity case, or if you were a helpless bird needing attending to. But those fears were unnecessary, as Alfie jumped right into the agenda for the day. Rambling and cursing the names he had to meet with today. Though you would typically scold him for inviting bad luck onto business dealings, you couldn’t help but smile and laugh along with him. This was the thing that brought back equilibrium. Alfie made things normal, and made you feel like a normal person. Not someone who had just lost a childhood home. Not someone who was being targeted.
As you walked in together, many of the men who had already begun work said their hellos, and gave their sympathies. Alfie grumbled beside you, wanting to keep walking into yours and his little corner. It shouldn’t have bothered him. He knew it shouldn’t. You really didn’t belong to him. But he found that it was all too easy for the flame of jealousy to rise when he saw you give that smile of yours to anyone else. He loved that smile. He yearned for it and saw it as a previous jewel that he coveted and aimed for. And for anyone else to gain it, it felt like a quick stab to his chest. But he kept himself relatively quiet, trying to behave in front of his men. Not letting himself appear as soft, or compromised.
Finally you are able to make it to your desk, and Alfie hands you your calendar. As you touch it, you notice that he’s definitely refiled through it.
“You went through my calendar?”
“Well it is my calendar actually.”
You put the notebook down and turn to him quickly, “well it’s my notes! And I have personal notes in there too, it’s not just about you.”
“Well don’t worry darling your handwriting is so tiny it’s not even legible. I did see your little cartoons though. Very cute that is. But seriously yeah. I bought the calendar. It’s mine. It’s my business in there. And if you hadn’t left right? If you hadn’t left I wouldn’t have had to pilfer through it.”
You just put your head down. There really wasn’t much more to say. But Alfie knows exactly how to fill the silence doesn’t he? “Darling. Come into my office real quick yeah?”
You take your seat in front of him. Alfie at his desk. Still early enough in the morning where his shirt buttons haven’t been ripped off yet in anger. And his hair is set without raking his thick fingers through yet. He considers you for a long moment. Just studying your face. Noticing how you don’t fidget under his eyes anymore. Your breathing even and your back relaxed into the back of the chair.
He sighs, leaning forward on the desk, muscular arms holding himself up. “Treacle… treacle darling I think we need to talk about your place in the business.”
Your heart stopped… did he really just bring you to the office to fire you? “Alfie you are not firing me.”
His head jerked back, “What the… what the fuck are you talking about? Just.. shh be quiet. Shit treacle just let me speak!”
You settle back as you both readjust. Shaking his head he continues, “No no treacle. Listen… I’ve been thinking about last night. How much my… way of communicating scared you. And I just want us to… communicate… expectations.”
You nod slowly. Truthfully, no man has ever talked to you like this. He nodded back, “Alright. Well… darling. Shit how do people do this.”
He rubbed his face as if scrubbing it would bring out the words to the surface, “Ugh treacle listen to me. I am… a bad man. Ok? I have killed people. I have. I have tortured men. I have knocked out half of the men in London. And I love to be on the top. My life, is violent. Ok? I don’t want us to pretend that violence is not a part of this job. Are you with me?”
After assenting, he only continued, “Now, I cannot guarantee you that you will never see violence ever. But, I can guarantee you that I will do my very best to make sure that you see as little as possible. Does that work with you?”
You nodded, “I can agree to that.”
He nodded back, brows furrowed, and letting go of a breath he didn’t know he was even holding. “Excellent. Good good.”
Leaning back, finally relaxing, Alfie continues with his racing thoughts, “I’ve also been thinking treacle… that you need to be shown the other parts of the business yeah? Give you a little more responsibility around here. Let you in more on my other dealings.”
“Other dealings?”
“Well sweetheart you didn’t think the bakery talk was just for show did you? There is in fact a bakery next door. And we got the jewelry shop upstairs. I want you in on it, familiar with everything.”
Alfie begins to rise up out of his seat again, motioning to you, “Come on. Let’s take a trip darling.”
You didn’t know what you were expecting when you went down to the bakery. When he mentioned bakery you pictured… a shack. Something run down with stale bread pilfered from other shops.
But it wasn’t. It was a legitimate bakery. The air warm and full with the smell of hot loaves and cinnamon and sugar. Older grandmotherly women worked behind the counter, smiling and glowing. Alfie tipped his hat towards them, “Morning ladies. Looking wonderful this morning as always.”
They jeered and laughed at their rugged boss, calling him over to test out the newest recipes created. He gave limited critique for the women, sandwiched between loving praise for their work. You were given a loaf as well, told to come in any time you wished.
You then walked into the jewelry shop above the office, and you couldn’t help but feel out of place.
Wall to wall, glass cases of absolutely finery surrounded you. Perhaps it was to keep the sin of coveting at bay, but you tried to not look at jewelry. You tried to not think of yourself as a girl who longed for jewelry. But looking at the glittering jewels and chains, you couldn’t help but feel a thrill run through you. They were beautiful.
You hear Alfie laugh before you realize that your mouth had been gaping open, “Well go on then. Take a look around.”
Your fingers danced along the glass casing, staring at the fine pieces. Like glittering flowers on delicate flower beds, you couldn’t believe it. Long thick golden chains. Silvers bracelets. A diamond tiara even. It wasn’t until the end of the line did you see something that made your heart pause in your chest.
A small golden locket. Heart shaped, with engraved ivy around the edges. Holding it along was a delicate gold chain. It looked so soft, beautiful, and something you had always wanted to wear. You were so entranced by its simple beauty, you jumped when Alfie came behind you.
“You want to try it on?”
You shook your head vigorously, “Oh no no it’s ok.”
“C’mon you want to I know you do.”
“I can’t try on the merchandise!”
“I think I decide who can try on the jewelry yeah? C’mon just try it on. It’s been waiting for someone.”
You smiled, suddenly very shy, “Well… ok. Just for a second.”
Alfie unlocked the case, pulling it out gently, carrying it as though it was the diamond tiara in the case over. He motioned for you to hold your hair away, to let him clasp it around your neck. It was so silent, you being the only two in the shop. All that could be heard was your pounding heart and the sound of Alfie’s breath brushing against your ear. You felt the cool weight against your chest, with Alfie’s warm and heavy hands on your shoulders. He gently positioned you in front a mirror, letting you see it on yourself.
You looked beautiful. It looked like it always belonged to you. As though it was made for you and you alone. The scent of your soap and perfume filled Alfie’s nose, and he wished that all the air in the world was replaced by your smell. He couldn’t hold himself back anymore. He leaned into you, bringing his face to the side of yours. Cheek to cheek, letting his hands run up and down your arms. Feeling the shiver that ran up your spine. “It’s beautiful.” You whisper, suddenly feeling as though you couldn’t catch your breath.
Alfie pressed his lips to your hair, mumbling into you, “It was made for you.”
You feel yourself melt into him, your back falling into his chest, with his strong arms wrapping around you. You heart was pounding, and you could’ve sworn you felt his heart knocking into your back. Your chest was so tight, you felt like your whole body was on fire. Alfie couldn’t stop now. He pressed kisses to your temple, “Tell me to stop.”
You gave no response as you leaned into his touch, him never stopping, trying to restrain himself as he pressed his passion to your temples and cheeks, “Tell me to stop. I’ll never ask anything of you. Tell me you feel nothing for me.”
You gasped, it was too much, but you just wanted to press him closer to you. Wrapping his arms tighter around you, “Alfie..” you whispered.
He turned you around, whispering your name as he pulled you to his chest.
“Alfie?”, Ollie knocked on the door frame of the jewelry shop, concern, shame, and confusion thick in his throat.
Alfie shut his eyes tightly, and you feel the grip on your waist strengthen, “WHAT OLLIE?” He barked out, causing you to snort.
Ollie begins to stammer, “I- I’m sorry Alfie! It’s just uh… Mr. Shelby… he’s here.”
Alfie put his head onto your forehead muttering, “I’m going to fucking shoot him.”
Alfie guides you out of the door, and you can barely make out Alfie telling Ollie to start searching for another job.
Mr. Shelby looks incredibly comfortable in Alfie’s office. Before you can say hello to the man, Alfie butts in, “What the fuck do you want Tommy. You interrupted a very important meeting.”
Tommy smiled at you softly, then turning to Alfie, “Sorry Alfie, but this is about our club. I think you can make a little exception for me eh?”
Alfie just grumbled as he threw himself into his seat, using his pointer finger to direct you and Tommy to your seats. Tommy continued once he settled into his seat, “We’ve got an issue Alfie. Apparently, someone is not too happy about our little arrangement. And evidently… according to some sources… you roughed someone up last night. Which allegedly resulted in someone’s home going up in smoke.”
At this admission Tommy turned to look at you, “My condolences darling. Hope everyone is ok yeah?”
“Don’t look at my secretary. What the fuck are you talking about?” Alfie barks out.
Before turning back to Alfie, Tommy rolls his eyes and breathes in slowly, “Alfie. My men have gotten information that you, in all your wisdom, beat the living daylights out of some idiot. And that idiot, is the nephew of our good friend Mr. Sabini. Now, Mr. Sabini, was not just hurt that you nearly killed his nephew, but he was also hurt that your lovely secretary denied his nephew, and that we are working together, in direct competition with a bar he owns on the same street.”
Alfie felt his stomach drop.
He knew. He knew that it was somehow his fault. Because this is what happens isn’t it? Anytime he allows himself a small comfort or a small glimmer of a dream of something different, it hurts all those around him. It destroys them. It kills them. This time, he hoped it would have been different. That God maybe would have had mercy on him. Allowed him this tenderness. Found him worthy of you.
"Alfie?", you prodded gently. You had risen from your seat on the plush velvet couch to touch his shoulder. His whole body had tensed up at Tommy's admission of evidence. The admission was scary enough, to know that you put your family in danger for simply denying a man. But it wasn't Alfie's to feel guilt for. And you knew he was holding himself responsible. Because that's what he does. He carries the weight of everyone on his own shoulders. Under your touch you feel his muscle tighten and relax immediately. Alfie raised his eyes to stare back at Tommy, whose typically impassible face had the shadow of regret and concern underneath those cold eyes.
"Tommy. I'm not going to let this pass."
"I know you're not Alfie. I think the time has come for Sabini to be removed."
Alfie leans back into his seat, hands folded across his stomach. You removed yourself back to your seat, the real business needed air.
You had never met Mr. Sabini. But you had certainly heard of him. All the girls in your classes spoke about their own encounters with him. How he would corner them and say vulgar things, hoping to get an evening with them. You'd seen him in town on your laundry deliveries with Eli, and you always felt as though you needed to bathe after you locked eyes with him. Eli always walked in front of you, as if to announce that you weren't alone to be approached. And to know that his nephew was much of the same, and went as far as to punish those the way he did for denying him was a shock. The Sabinis had made themselves clear that they weren't above killing for disrespect.
And yet you feared more for the Sabini family than you did your own in this moment. You had seen Alfie be ruthless and loud. You had seen him scream to the point of men wetting themselves, and you had seen Alfie beat a man near death. But this Alfie... this Alfie made your blood run cold. Made you sweat underneath the lamp in the corner. He looked larger than normal. The muscles in his neck and arm twitching every so often. He was near silent. And when he did speak, it was low but rumbling. As if the plates of the earth were moving to the sound of his voice. This wasn't a meeting you took notes for. This was a meeting where the words soaked into your skin, into your bones as you listened to the methodical destruction of the Sabini company.
"Miss Abraham. Come here dear." Alfie called to you finally.
When you got to him, he brought you down to your level, whispering, "I want you to go with Ollie, and he is going to take you home. Go be with your family for the day, draw up some ideas for the gaming club for me alright?"
The way he whispered it so lowly, it was accepting no arguments, despite the fact it had not even reached lunch time yet. You nodded in assent, and he simply responded, "Good girl. I will see you tomorrow."
When you walked into the house, your mother was the only one home, placing the finishing touches on a dress to be picked up in the evening, "Oh darling! You're home early! You feeling alright? You look pale."
You shook your head, suddenly feeling a bit weak, "No mama I'm fine. My boss just heard about what happened and wanted me to go home."
"Mmm, well why don't you sit with me anyway."
You took a seat on the floor across from your mom. You had been sitting like this since you were a child. From playing dolls, to reading to her, to helping sew loose buttons on your family's shirts with her. It was where you gave your mother all your thoughts. All your fears and secrets. It was the confessional and threshing floor of all your worries.
Without looking up from her needlework your mother smoothly spoke, "That's quite a beautiful necklace darling. Did Mr. Solomons send you home with that as well?"
Your stomach dropped, and your hand flew to your chest.
You hadn't taken it off.
"Mama I-"
"My love how long did you think you were going to be able to keep up this ruse? You and I both know that lying is not your strong suit."
Your hands covered your face in embarrassment. "How long have you known?"
Your mother smiled, still not looking up from her work, "Oh since about the fourth week. You looked a little too giddy coming home the night before, so I assumed your boss was incredibly handsome. So I peeked out the window and saw him. I mean really darling did you even try?"
"Ugh... does Papa know?"
"Mmhmm. He was very cross for about two days, but I spoke with him."
"Are you still cross with me?"
It was only now that she stopped her steady work, "I'm only upset that you didn't feel as though you could trust me and your father. I understand darling, you wanted your independence and to figure things out for yourself. But we love you darling, and we want to know these things so we can just know you are ok."
You got closer to your mother, laying your head on her knees, "I just didn't want you to worry. I didn't want you to feel as though I was a burden."
"Oh hush." She said, smoothing out the hairs on your head, "You have never been a burden. And your troubles are never a burden. You need to believe that darling, you are not a burden to us. You don't need to shoulder everything on your own. Not when you have us."
You nodded, feeling the tears pool and gather on your mother's dress. The stress of the past 48 hours finally overcoming you. And you told her everything. About the day to day job. About the gaming club. About the fire. About Alfie. About what he made you feel.... you laid it all bare for your mother, who nodded and received it all. And you finally felt the weight of 1000 stones finally lift off your chest.
Back at the office, the room is full of smoke and two bottles of whiskey slowly depleting. Tommy and Alfie have drawn up a master plan of an offensive, a war to end it all. For 2 years they have dealt separately with Sabini. But to Alfie, this was a step too far. He targeted an innocent girl. His secretary. For what? To protect the 'honor' of a boy? It would not stand.
After the construction, Alfie and Tommy slumped in their chairs, mulling over the day. Thinking of everything to come.
"You love her don't you."
Alfie's eyes flicked to him, Tommy's cold eyes never shifting away , piercing him through the smokey haze. "None of your fucking business mate. She's just a good secretary. And a good girl. Doesn't deserve this."
"No. No a good secretary gets a raise every so often. A good secretary doesn't come into meetings and give advice. A good secretary doesn't get this protection Alfie."
Alfie didn't respond. Because if he did respond it would become real. It wouldn't just be something he could bury anymore. Once he said it, it would change everything. Tommy put out his cigarette, "You love that girl Alfie. That adds a whole new element to this game we are playing with."
"She is not a fucking pawn Tommy."
"Well to Sabini she is. Try as you might Alfie, that's what happens to men like us. Those we love turn into game pieces. This whole city is a fucking chess board."
"You are talking as if you're a god Tommy."
"And you are talking as if there is one to protect you, As if there is something to protect that girl."
"There is something to protect her you shit. It's me. I'll kill all of London before a single hair on her head is touched. That includes you mate, so don't talk to me about game pieces, or protection, or people dying alright? Because no matter what Sabini throws at us, not matter if this sick plan of our fails, no matter if all of London burns, I will make sure that she is safe!"
Tommy just smiles in the wake of Alfie's fury, lighting up another smoke, "And that is why I know we will not fail."

"Topper, no." You put your hand on the bridge of your nose, disappointed and annoyed. Ever since you've told Topper that you liked Rafe, he's been nagging him about asking him out.
Topper rolled his eyes. "Then how else are you going tell him you like him?"
"I'm not telling him until I know for a fact he likes me back, I'm not embarrassing myself." You stated matter-of-factly, making Topper groan and lay back on the couch, his arms crossed.
"You're a pussy, that's why." Topper mumbled making you whip your head towards him, angry.
"Oh shut the hell up, it took you how many months again, before asking Sarah out?-"
"That's different, okay, she had a boyfriend and I'm not a homewrecker." Topper countered making you cross your arms and move your gaze to the TV.
Topper was very persistent on helping you get with Rafe. No matter how many times you've told him that you were just waiting on the right time to tell him, he'd pass it off as you being a coward. It was getting pretty exhausting, Topper's nagginess was really starting to annoy you.
You and Rafe were friends, that's all it was at the moment. He's never shown interest in you and it would be really awkward if you told him you liked him, then he rejected you. You would never be able to face him again.
-
Rafe and Topper were at the Club, getting lunch before Topper was supposed to go shopping with his mom for your birthday present. They were sitting at their usual table, ordering drinks. You were turning the big 1-8 this week and Rafe wanted to get you something special.
He'd usually get you some jewelry or a gift card but that didn't feel right. "What should I get her?"
Topper rolled his eyes, this was the fifth time he'd asked today. He took a drink of his cocktail before quickly answering: "I don't know, you should ask her."
"Dude." Rafe scoffed, "that wouldn't be special if I just asked her. It has to be a surprise."
"Why do you care so much?"
That question had caught Rafe off guard. Why did he care so much? He wasn't obligated to get you a present, especially a special one.
Topper knew instantly why he cared. A smirk rose from his lips as he sighed contently. "You like her."
"What? No, I don't." Rafe countered as he furrowed his eyebrows in thought. Did he? Topper stared blankly at Rafe. "I mean, she's nice. And cute. But she's your sister so that would be really weird. But I mean you are dating Sarah... Not that I would want to date Y/N, but-"
"You like her. You like Y/N."
Rafe was quiet for a second as Topper smirked, taking a sip of his drink happily. Did Rafe like Y/N?
She did make him feel all giddy and nervous at times, but he'd known her his entire life essentially. He remembers having a tiny crush on her in middle school and he wanted to her ask to Homecoming Sophomore year but those times were different. They were both basically adults now.
Rafe was just confused. He didn't know why Topper had to blurt that out right now but now Rafe couldn't even think straight.
He was pulled out of his thoughts once he heard Topper's phone ring. "I gotta go, my mom's here. Don't forget, you're hanging out at our house until I get back."
Oh shit. He forgot he said he was going to stay at the Thornton's until he came back from the mall. His face flushed as he looked at his phone, trying to play nonchalant. "Okay, uh. Tell me what you get her."
"I will." Topper had a big smirk on his face once he left Rafe alone with his thoughts. Did he like Y/N? Again?
-
You and Rafe were in the kitchen, making some lunch. At first, it had been awkward because of Rafe's discovery but it slowly faded because it was one-sided. Rafe had never felt uncomfortable in your presence, you always had a comforting aura.
You and Rafe were joking around and laughing, per usual. It wasn't an uncommon occurrence to see you two together, close and joking around. Even though he was technically Topper's best friend, that didn't stop you two from becoming closer.
As Rafe watched you laugh, he felt the familiar butterfly feeling invade his stomach. He hadn't felt that way about anyone in a while so it was a foreign feeling, he tried to push it down and just enjoy the time with you.
You put down the knife you were using to cut the tomatoes and sighed. "I'll be right back, I gotta go use the bathroom."
Rafe nodded. "Of course, I'll be here."
You smiled back at him as you hurried up the stairs to the bathroom. Rafe was finishing up his sandwich before he heard a phone ting loudly next to him. He turned around to see your phone and he read it subconsciously. His face went read as he processed it.
top 😎 Rafe likes you, too. It's confirmed now, don't tell him. What are you waiting for now?? 🤨😜
His jaw was practically on the floor. You like him? And Topper hadn't told him? He felt betrayed but suddenly he realized that you liked him. He felt a flash of emotions. Was this a good thing?
Rafe didn't have time to process this information because you finished up in the bathroom pretty quickly. You jogged down the stairs, a smile on your face. You froze once you realized Rafe was zoned out.
"Rafe, you okay?" You questioned as you walked back to your spot next to him, putting the lid back on the peanut butter jar. He quickly zoned back in as he heard your voice.
"Yeah! Yes, of course, I just got uh, bored." Rafe says swiftly, smiling at you as you looked back at him, a suspicious look taking over your face.
You furrowed your eyebrows. "You sure?"
"Uh, huh." Rafe put his stuff away as you watched him, trying to figure out if he was being honest or not. You decided it was best to just leave it be, Rafe was nothing if not stubborn.
You got your sandwiches and strolled back to your way on the couch, Rafe taking the seat next to you. Rafe took the remote and resumed the TV show you two were watching, an unsettling awkwardness between you two.
You were trying to figure what was wrong while Rafe was trying to figure out what to do about this situation. He'd dreamed of this day for years; the day Y/N liked him back. But of course Topper had to ruin it and tell him. It wasn't exactly his fault because he didn't know Rafe was going to read the text, but with Rafe's absurd luck, he did. And of course Topper's big mouth would go and text Y/N the moment he'd realized Rafe liked you back.
You remembered you needed to respond to your friend's text so you pulled out your phone, and there was Topper's message. Your face went white as you registered why Rafe was acting so weird; he probably had read the text by accident.
That was why Rafe was acting so weird. You wanted cry of embarrassment until you had registered exactly what the text said. Rafe likes you too. He liked you, too?
Rafe likes you back? You furrowed your eyebrows again, was Topper playing some kind of sick prank? You checked the date and no, it wasn't April 1st. Topper wasn't the type to play a prank, so why exactly was Rafe acting weird? If he did truly like you, then why is being weird and distant instead of happy? And then you realized it was Rafe - of course he was going to act weird and distant.
"Hey, Rafe?" You whispered and Rafe turned his attention on you instead of the screen in front of him. "Did you uh, read my text on accident?"
Rafe's eyes widened. "Uh, why?"
You resisted the urge to roll your eyes. "Why do you think?"
Rafe turned his gaze away from you, bashfully.
"Was it.. Is the text true?"
It took him a couple seconds before responding with a nod. He could try and deny it but where would that take them? Nowhere. It was already out in the open, he might as well address it.
You felt yourself heat up at the confirmation. Rafe liked you - but now all you could hear was Topper's annoying voice comment on how much of a pussy you are. You kept looking at the boy and you wanted to say something but you were nervous.
Rafe looked up at you for the first time for what seemed like hours and as he looked into your wide gaze, he felt himself melt. He couldn't help but smile at your shocked expression but you felt your shock fade into admiration, a smile crawling on your lips, mirroring Rafe's.
Rafe was never good at expressing what he was feeling but he wanted to. He wanted to say something he just... couldn't. So he did the one thing he knew he was good at.
He slowly lifted his hand from his lap and moved it slowly to yours, clasping it in his. You happily accepted it as you both stared into each other's eyes, a mutual nervousness shared between the two.
"Y/N." Rafe let out, breathlessly. "I do like you, seriously. I have liked you for years."
"Years?" You almost laughed but held it in, Rafe rolling his eyes at your tone. "I've liked you for a couple months."
"Wow."
"Well -- I mean, I've always thought you were cute, so." You mumbled as Rafe's lips turned upward again. His ego definitely boosted at that compliment.
"Even with the side part?"
You laughed at the mention of the iconic side part. "Yes, Rafe, even the side part."
"I've always thought you were cute. But the bangs were a no-no for me, I had to question my type for a sec there-"
"Shut up I was like, 12."
You guys both laughed until it died down for a little. Rafe squeezed your hand and then you remembered you were still holding it. You looked down and Rafe swiftly moved his other hand to your face. You both bored into one another's eyes and it felt like time itself had stopped. As Rafe pulled in, you closed your eyes.
Before his lips could land on yours, you heard the front door open. You whipped your head to the door, watching Topper come in, carrying a bunch of bags, your mother following close behind.
"God, I texted you guys like 5 times, I needed help!"
"How much stuff did you guys get?" Rafe's eyes widened at the multiple bags the two were carrying. He got up from the couch and quickly helped your mother, carrying all the bags she was.
"Thank you, Rafe." She smiled as Topper glared at Rafe. "Can you boys go put the bags upstairs for me? They're all for Ms. Y/N's birthday."
Topper scoffed, "Can you guess who's mom's favorite?"
"I think Y/N's everyone's favorite but-"
"Shut up, Rafe."
Rafe smiled at you and you felt yourself heat up at the comment. They walked but the stairs as you sat at the couch, in awe of what just happened. Rafe held your hand and was about kiss you? Your birthday week couldn't have gone any better. That's the best present anyone could give.

You’re my happy place
husband!elijah mikaelson x wife!fem!reader
tags: fluff, happy ending, soft!elijah
a/n: if u guys even read this pls pls pls send me requests for fics u want me to write!! ok enjoy<3
You had spent the entire day at the compound waiting for Elijah and Nik to get back. They had gone on some stupid witch hunt again because Nik believed that the witches were plotting against him as usual.
You sat on the floor of the compound playing with baby hope when you hear the hurried footsteps of the two brothers and the stench of blood nearly made you vomit on the spot.
You hurriedly put Hope back in her cot before running to see if anyone was hurt. Nik looked like he had just committed mass murder but by the look in his eyes you knew better than to ask him what had happened. All you did was beckon hun closer and take a look to see if any of his injuries were major, thankfully he just looked like he had a bruised ego.
To the left of his Elijah stood in a ski liar state however he seemed to be clutching his side. You knew whenever Nik would put himself in dangerous situations your idiot of a husband would not be far behind, always looking out for his little brother.
You made your way to him slowly whilst looking over him to see if anywhere else seemed to be causing him pain, once it looked like his side was the only place he seemed to be clutching you sighed in relief.
As you reached him you carefully placed your hands on his face, he seemed to be avoiding your eyes and you somehow knew exactly why.
“Is that blood Eli?” You questioned harshly, you knew that when you both moved to New Orleans that the witch community wasn’t exactly fond of the Mikaelson family however the lacerations on Elijahs side didn’t seem to be healing and this has been an all time low for them, never had the witches hurt them so badly they couldn’t heal it. You were on relatively good terms with all of the witches however seeing your husband in this state all you could hear was your heart pounding and your blood boiling.
Elijah looks almost embarrassed as he utters a small “No?” You sigh and shake your head with a small smile, your husband would always be the one trying to make you laugh even if he did seem like he was bleeding out.
“That isn’t normally a question you answer with another question darling” all he does is smile back innocently.
“Cmon let’s get you cleaned up” you motion for him to sit on the couch as Hayley ends up attending to Nik as he grumbled about the ‘stupid witches’. You just sigh and look at Elijah pointedly
“You can’t keep running head first into ever fight that Nik picks so you can save him, it’s not safe” you tell him as you brush his hair out of his face to clean the small scratches surrounding his eyes.
“I know my love, he’s my brother, I simply can’t let him get himself in trouble, I made a vow to my mother to always protect him and it is what I plan to do as long as I’m alive, alongside you of course” you can’t help but smile at his loyalty to his family, you know it hasn’t been easy for him and Nik to gain back their mutual trust of one another especially after decades of daggers and heartbreak however for the most part they seem to have moved past all of that.
“I love you Eli, I can’t stand to see you hurt” He can feel your worry and although he and you both know he will continue to put himself in harms way to save Nik he hugs you and mumbles affirmations that he will try harder and be safer when he travels with Nik. You can’t ask for much more and you know that so as you both make your way to Freya’s room so that she can heal Eli’s wounds you squeeze his hand as a reminder he’s okay and Freya will most likely know how to heal him.
After the quick visit of Freya healing his wounds and researching about the kind of magic used by the witches that was somehow strong enough to hurt an original you both lay in you shared room.
“Do you ever wonder what it would be like if we were never turned?” You turn to him in confusion, you had been one of the first vampires that Elijah had turned after his mother had used to spell however even after decades of being together you always thought that you were both content with how life was. “Sometimes, but I am quite happy with how we are right now…Are you not?” You admit and question almost insecurely.
As if Elijah has read your thoughts he backtracks “No no no, my love I just meant that I would have wished for us to have a family of our own, little children for us to take care of and I am sorry that I can’t give that to you” you feel tears welling up at the thought of what your life could have been. You grasp Elijah’s face in your hands and assure him that you are perfectly happy with how things have played out.
“Even if you hadn’t turned me with you Elijah I would have been heartbroken to see you outlive me, you have been my rock and compass our entire lives, seeing you daggered by Niklaus only ever brought great heartache to me, so please don’t think for a moment that this life has not been more than enough, I will always choose you over and over again my love” You can feel his smile as you rest your head on his chest.
“Do you remember the 20’s? Where we had gone to that jazz club with Niklaus? We had just changed our names and anytime someone spoke to us we would make up elaborate stories of where we came from, we spent the entire night dancing and once we got home you told me that you loved me and that you wish we could have had that life-“
“You proposed to me that night and promised you would show me the world”
“I plan to keep that promise everyday we have each other”
“I love you Elijah Mikaelson”
“I love you more Y/N Y/L/N”

the sun shined over (name)’s [hair color] hair. she soaked in the warmth, closing her eyes as she bathed in it, her mouth slightly hanging open and slowly curving into a smile as she heard her older sister’s voice calling her name.
“(name)! (name)! (name)!”
she turned her head to gaze over her rushing sister, her white sundress flowing behind her. “someone’s here!! someone new!” she exclaimed, picking her sister up by the hands. “new? eli, there hasn’t been anyone new in like years.”
eli was (name)’s older sister. she was both much prettier, smarter, soft-spoken, and all above, definitely more of a first choice to any guy out there.
not like they’ve met alot of guys. they lived somewhere rural in the woods, since, ever since they had found out they we’re demigods, they didn’t want to be out in society, and near monsters.
yet, they also didn’t know about camp half blood. nobody truly told them. living in the woods wasn’t that bad, it was peaceful, and there were lots of fresh fruit around.
yet, it could get lonely sometimes. the only time they had seen anyone new ever, were these three other demigods. an older boy with a scar over his eye, and two younger girls. saying that they were on a mission to find a camp for demigods.
the sisters didn’t want to believe it. when they were offered to come along, they decided to stay back. afraid of what might come out of it.
and here they are!
“are you sure it was a person, eli?” she narrowed her eyes at the brown haired who dragged her, “oh my hades— yes (name)! why won’t you believe me?!” eli turned back to (name) with a cold stare.
(name) scoffed, her wrist still enveloped by her sister’s fingers. “because the last time you said that, it was a sloth wearing underwear.” eli giggled at the memory, “i mean, we got a good laugh out of it.”
her younger sister nodded, “fair.”
the two marched back to their tiny little cottage, and near them was a burnt out campfire and three other tents. “see! what animal would have tents?” eli shot, waving her hands around the campsite.
“HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE ‘EM!”
the sisters turned back, raising their hands out of impulse, their faces painting both shock and frightened. there were three other teens, one with blonde hair and glasses. the other was a girl with brown choppy hair and native earrings. the last one had caught (name)’s eye more than any of the others.
he was curly-haired and dark-skinned. he had mechanical goggles over his head, and bandages all over his body and face.
and it seemed that eli thought the same.
who the hell were these three?
“oh. nevermind.” the girl in the middle let her hand fall on her side, the dagger still in hand. “didn’t know princesses still lived in the forest.” the blonde to her left looked genuinely confused.
“oh they’re princesses alright.” the curly-haired to her right remarked, sending a wink to both (name) and eli.
(name) and eli confusingly put their arms down, sending each other a puzzled look before turning back to them. “do you guys own these.. tents?” eli asked.
the blonde nodded, “don’t worry. we don’t mean trouble.” he raised his hands in defense, he had dropped his sword to the side after realizing their potential enemies both wore sundresses to their ankles.
“i’m jason, this is piper. leo.” he had introduced themselves.
leo. she could feel as if the name slipped out of her tongue so effortlessly. “i’m (name), this is my sister eli.” she tried to introduce her sister, but she was far too busy staring at leo. leo curved his lips into a smile after seeing the heart eyes eli had for him.
“oh god.” (name) mumbled to herself. piper sent her a laugh, “tell me about it.”
the sisters had let them stay in the spare rooms of the cottage for as long as they wanted, and later finding out they were demigods just as they were.
and after about a day or so, eli and leo had hitted it off like crazy. it made (name)’s stomach churn. how could she let this happen? how could she let her first crush slip away like this? she had her eye on him first. not eli.
but again, she wanted them to have all the happiness. she couldn't take that away from them.
a month passes.
eli and leo are still together, and the sisters decided to finally give this camp half blood a try. still unclaimed, it didn't matter to them because they we're just having fun meeting other demigods and finally having a place.
and yet, (name) was still in love with her sister's boyfriend. she was over the moon. but she continued to deny it, trying to bury her feelings with empty promises and unfulfilling hope. she loved his curly hair, but it was irrelevant. she liked how he stuck his tongue out when he concentrated, also irrelevant.
she'll always be the second choice.
and that was okay.
one of the days, leo stopped by the hermes' cabin for eli to apologize for their recent arguement, almost ending in a break up. but the girl was gone doing errands of her own, so it was just (name) in their corner of the cabin engrossed in a book.
"oh, it's just you (name)." leo walked inside with his grease-covered hands in his pockets. (name) and leo though they weren't dating, they happened to grow to be best friends over time. "hi leo. eli's not here." she sang, her eyes glued to the pages.
leo laughed, "come on! can't i just come by to see you?" he hopped on the edge of the bed. (name) shot him a puzzled expression, "um.. sure." she nodded hesitantly. leo gave the same expression, shoving her knees away that covered her face, "hey! the hell do you want valdez?!"
she didn't know where her tone came from. neither did leo, who was bug-eyed by the irritated reply. (name) rolled her eyes, trailing them back to the book. leo scoffed, "geez sorry ms. sassy. don't know where all the fucking attitude came from." he mirrored her eye roll.
"maybe if you didn't act like such a goddamn dumbass all the time." she said in a whisper, but she hoped that he heard. leo grew red, his eyes becoming even wider. "dude what the hell's wrong with you?!" leo shot, standing back up on his feet, his hands out of his pockets and now curled up in fists.
her eyes shot open, "the hell's wrong with me?!" she tossed her book away, standing up to reach his level. their angered faces we're inches apart, they could feel each others' hot breaths on their faces from panting irritation.
"i never noticed how pretty your eyes were."
(name) felt her heart sink to her stomach. she stepped a few blocks back, and as if all the feelings she had for him drifted away, "go to hell valdez." leo kept his narrowed eyed look at her. "what?! now i can't compliment you?!" (name) groaned, burying her face in her hands. leo anxiously ran his fingers through his hair anxiously.
campers from the hermes' cabin had stared at them for a good five seconds before running out of the heated cabin.
"it's not that! it's the fact that you do stupid stuff like this, and be so blind!" she exclaimed, finally moving towards him with her hands hugging her arms. leo scrunched his brows, "what do you mean blind?"
(name) stayed silent, looking away; finally realizing what words slipped out of her mouth. the brunette scrunched his brows further, "(name), what do you mean blind?!" leo was angry. irritated. he could feel the fire in his hands build up.
"fuck! i love you leo!"
silence.
the silence had passed them like wind. leo's expressions softens, finally letting go of the tension from his brows. (name) ran her hands through her hair, they had locked eyes. "you what?" leo breathed. "i.. no, sorry, i don't know what i'm saying." she breathed back.
what am i doing? what about eli? crap, no no-
"i didn't know." leo had his hands fully relaxed, the fists gone. (name) lifted her head to look back at him. god the brown eyes she fell in love with. "why would you?" she sighed, mostly out of exhaustion.
"eli's probably in the fields, picking-"
"i don't care (name)."
she was eye-shot once again. leo took her by the shoulders, "(name), if i knew, gods, (name), if only i knew." his lips curved into a smile. "but eli-"
leo rolled his eyes, "please. eli doesn't love me. pretty sure she's walking around looking for her next boyfriend. the whole relationship was bullshit." that was true. eli wasn't one to stick around long, (name) had noticed how different she was acting ever since coming to camp half-blood.
"yeah, i.. i guess-" she laughed, finally feeling relief in her shoulders. she was cut off with leo pressing their lips together, and it was as if (name) was lifting from the ground. her arms embracing his neck as his hands trailed down her waist.
pulling away, a soft dreamy sigh escaping leo's lips as he melted in (name) eyes. "you could've let me finish." (name) smiled, sarcastically remarking. "eh, i waited this long."
she smiled.

You're coming in hot, but not so bright
Making a meal of any appetite
Just take it easy
'Cause if I held you up against the light
I could see clear enough to cut right
To where you're weakest
"just take it easy" Ellie spoke to you as she reached across the table to grab your hand.
You felt a shiver run down the spine, at the small contact. You and Ellie have not touched each other for months, and you weren't going to lie, you've felt empty and cold without her.
Ellie hesitantly interlocked her fingers with yours. A surprised look overtook Ellies features.
You let her hold your hand? For the last 6 months you made her life a living hell, depriving her from touching your and finally, finally you let her touch you.
It's crazy to think that the person you once knew so well, became someone you don't recognize.
The Ellie sitting infront of you wasn't the girl you fell in love with two years ago. And the way you were acting right now wasn't the sweet girl Ellie met and once loved.
The Ellie you fell in love with would never cheat on you.
It's crazy to think the person you once knew from the inside out wanted nothing to do with you.
Ellie knew your hopes and dreams, she knew your fears and she knew what kept you up at night. But the person she was sitting across was not that person anymore.
You weren't the girl that used to scream everytime she saw a spider. You weren't the girl that looked at Ellie with so much love and care, now you stared at her with a cold and icy look. A look of hatred, and anger.
There was no love left in you.
You weren't Ellie's girl anymore and she realized she fucked up everything.
"So...." Ellie started.
The air surrounding you was tense, your hands were still interlocked. You felt Ellies hand became sweaty, you felt the table moving due to her leg bouncing up and down.
She was nervous.
The future of your relationship depends on what you had to say. Ellie couldn't take the suspense.
Were you actually going to forgive her after what she did?
Ellie believes everyone deserves a second chance. She deserves one. She made a mistake. It's not as if you've never made one over the last two years you were together.
"Are you enjoying dinner?" Ellie asked awkwardly.
She watched you look up from the plate of food and you simply replied with "no".
Ellie frowned at your response, she thought you liked spaghetti?
"I thought you loved spaghetti?" she asked, confused.
"I don't like it anymore"
"what? Since when?"
"Since you fucking cheated on me"
Ellie went quite after that. She stared at you with glossy eyes, she hated when you brought this up.
"That night..." you started "it was our anniversary and I made spaghetti, and guess what Elie?" You asked her.
"My girlfriend was fucking someone else when I decided to suprise her" you started laughing as if it was the funniest joke ever.
Ellie started sweating with embrassment.
The room felt hot and stuffy.
Ellie waited for you to keep quite before she spoke again, "it was a mistake"
"This relationship was a mistake" you replied.
Ellie looked at you with her eyes wide "you don't mean that" she said softly, as the tears glossed her eyes once again.
"You said you loved me, you said we were meant to be" Ellie spoke.
"Maybe I was lying" you answered as you removed your hand from Ellie's grip. You got up and you walked out of the restaurant, not looking back at her.
Maybe trying to fix this relationship was a mistake. Maybe she should stop trying.
But you were worth fighting for.
I can tell that
You wanna laugh it off, but you're lazy
And I've been trying to make amends with you lately
But you're difficult to reason with and maybe
Just maybe
Want my chest to keep it heavin'
On the lighter side of feelin'
I'm not going into grievin' for you, for you, for you
So i'm just gonna laugh it off
"you can't keep ignoring my calls" was the first thing Ellie said as she walked into your apartment.
She heard you close the door as you walked towards her, and all you could said was "I can".
Ellie let out a groan of frustration. She was trying. She was really trying to fix things. To earn your trust again, but you were making it so fucking difficult.
Ellie tried taking you on dates, but you leave her alone at the end of every night. She tried to call and text you but you would never answer.
"How are we supposed to fix things if you keep ignoring me?" Ellie asked.
"Who said I wanted to fix things?"
Ellie opened her mouth in suprise.
"If I remembered correctly you came to my apartment crying, literally begging for me to take you back. To give you another chance" you spat out at her.
Ellie looked down at her feet before she quietly muttered "I came back because i love you".
You let out a laugh. Ellie loved you? If she did she would've never cheated on you.
"Love is about forgiveness" Ellie interrupted your laughing session.
You stopped laughing and you just stared at her. "For fucks sake Ellie, you cant mess something up and expect everything to be ok"
And once again you left Ellie speechless. "Now get out of my apartment" you yelled at her.
How long does one fight for something before you give it up? How long does Ellie have to fight to get you back? How long was she still going to be punished before you'd forgive her?
Ellie used to think that you're trying to hurt her on purpose. But the more Ellie thought about the more she realized that she deserved it. She was the one who cheated and she needs to suffer the consequences of her actions.
Ellie went back to you because she realized her mistake. She realized that you were the only woman for her. And she fought really fucking hard to get you back, and now that she has you she realizes what she did has caused deeper problems than what she initially thought.
You weren't being difficult on purpose, you weren't trying to hurt her. You were treating Ellie this way because she hurt you.
Ellie wishes you'd just listen. That you'd hear her out, that you'd let her explain. But what was there to explain? She cheated because she was drunk? She imagined she was fucking you instead?
But she couldn't blame you, because if you did the same thing Ellie wouldn't even accepted your apology.
If she had a time machine, Ellie would go back in time, to make her not go out that night, she wish she could back and stop herself from drinking so much, she wishes she could go back and stop herself from bringing that girl home.
So many regrets, and so many mistakes, but yet she could do nothing to fix it.
I wanna be wrong, but it don't feel right
Lighting my name up with an exit sign
You got me leavin'
You're pushing me into this falling out
And the moment that I watch my mouth
I lose the feeling
Ellie went out with a bunch of coworkers that night.
Ellie wasn't stupid, she knew she was an attractive girl, and where ever she went heads turned in her direction.
That night Ellie drank more than she normally did due to the amount of stress she was under.
Her boss was breathing down her ass, giving her assignment after assignment and she just needed a break. As Ellie kept taking shot after shot, feeling the liquid burn her throat, her eyes landed on a tall brunette.
The girl winked at Ellie, and all Ellie did was give her a smirk as she walked towards her. One thing led to another, and Ellie took the girl home.
It was about 1:00am when Ellie heard her front door open, but with her head between the girls thighs she couldn't focus on anything else.
The girl put her hands into Ellies hair as she threw back her head letting out a loud moan. "You like that?" Ellie chuckled as she went up to kiss the girl.
As they were making out Ellie heard a familiar voice from behind the door.
"your kitchen light was on so I assumed I'd come say happy anniversary early even though it's 1-"
Ellies head snapped towards the door, as she heard a glass fall onto the floor. Heavy breathes fell from Ellies lips as she looked at you staring at her with tears in your eyes.
"On our fucking anniversary?" You cried loudly as the tears fell from your eyes. You ran out the house, and all Ellie did was watch you ran away.
She watched you cry. She watched you walked out.
The girl Ellie was hooking up with, was grabbing her clothes and yelling at Ellie for being a piece of shit. But Ellie wasn't paying attention to her.
The girl walked out the apartment, and Ellie was left there. Alone and half naked.
All Ellie could do was stare at the broken plate, and her floor filled with spaghetti.
'Cause I got the good sense to laugh it off, but this is crazy
You make it seem like I'm the one who's being shady
But your love is in the liminal and maybe
Just maybe
"what the fuck Ellie?" You yelled.
Ellie had shown up to your apartment, once again, drunk and saying random things.
"Hi" she slurred before she put her arm around your shoulder.
"Did you know, Jesse cheated om Dina and she laughed it off?"
"Are you saying I should pretend you never cheated, and just laughed at it like it was a joke?"
Ellie hummed.
All you could do was let put a sigh as you removed Ellie's jacket before you placed her on the couch.
You left Ellie blabbering on the couch as you walked yo her room to get her a blanket.
You felt guilty for wanting to leave Ellie. You felt like you played a part, in why she cheated on you.
Maybe you didn't give her enough attention? Maybe you didn't treat her right?
Ellie never knew this, but you blamed yourself for a long time. You felt like you were the reason she cheated. But after a while you realized that it wasn't your fault.
You knew you deserved better. You deserved to be in a happy relationship and that person wasn't Ellie.
You grabbed a soft blanket that Ellie had gotten you for your 5 month anniversary almost two years ago, and you brought it to her.
You covered her with the blanket, as you looked down at her beautiful face.
She looked so peaceful. So innocent.
"I love you" Ellie whisperered, before she fell asleep.
If only you still felt the same
Oh, oh
I'm just gonna laugh it off
Oh, ohh
'Cause the air's got a weight right now
And I can't help but feel out your heavy breathing
I'm only teasing
You and Ellie sat in awkward silence in her apartment.
You cleared your throat as you looked at her: "I've made my decision- about us"
Ellie let out a sigh of relief. Finally, you were finally going to talk to her, you were finally going to forgive her and things would go back to normal.
Ellie stared at you with a smile on her face, waiting for you to say that you'd forgiven her.
"I think we should break up"
"what? No"
"Ellie please let me go... you know this will never work out" you whisperered.
And Ellie let out a loud sob at your request.
How could you ask that from her? How do you give up someone you love so much?
Ellie started sobbing because she realized there was no going back from this because she had truly lost you forever. This was all her fault.
You got up as Ellie continued to cry. And you walked towards the door, before you looked back at her, as she sat there sobbing like a baby.
"Ellie remember when you said that love is about forgiveness?"
You heard Ellie sniffle before she looked up at you with swollen but hopeful eyes.
She nodded as an answer to your question.
"If you love me, you'd forgive me for leaving you"
And with that you walked out her apartment, closing the door behind you.
And once again Ellie was left alone. Her sobs filled the room, as she fell onto her knees.
Maybe she should've let you go the first time.

You had a “boyfriend” named Eli. He always treated you like shit, and you were tired of it. He wasn’t the best boyfriend you’ve ever had, but you know he has a best friend named Mike. You and Mike have been hooking up lately behind Eli’s back, and it was honestly deserved. You didn’t think of it as cheating, maybe a bit of payback instead.
You were reading a book in you and Eli’s bed, the bright moon shining into your room. You heard a knock at the window and your gaze shifted towards it. You saw Mike, covered in the rain. You closed your book and got up, opening the window with a soft smile. “It’s been a while.” You said, looking into his blue eyes. He let out a soft chuckle and reached up, gently caressing your cheek with his huge hands. Rings covered his fingers. “Obviously, love. Eli here?” You shook your head, moving out the way so Mike could head inside.
Once he got in, he closed the window and placed his hands on your waist. “He’s at a bar, Mike. Probably sleeping with another girl.” You mumbled, looking down. Mike gently cupped your chin and tilted your head to look up into his eyes. “He might be one of my buddies, but I don’t allow that to happen. Can I tell you something?” He chuckled a tiny bit. He seemed pretty eager to tell you. Once you finally nodded, he took a deep breath. “Ever since I first seen you, I thought I should have you, not Eli. I knew he was an asshole, and he wouldn’t love you as much as I would.”
You blushed a tiny bit at his words, not really expecting him to just say that. “I can’t believe I fell for him. I thought he was a nice guy.” You sighed and looked away from Mike again. He let go of your chin and waist and tilted his head to the side. “Anything you were just doing? Anything fun?” Mike leaned against the wall and crossed his arms, staring at you. You shrugged and shook your head. He chuckled a bit again and sat on your bed. He wrapped his arm around your waist and dragged you with him, making you let out a gasp.
“What’s wrong, cutie pie? Listen, he’s going to be out for a couple of hours, which means we can maybe have some alone time. We don’t have to do anything you won’t like.” Mike mumbled softly as he gave you a soft kiss on the cheek. You nodded and looked down, slowly looking at his crotch. He noticed you staring and grabbed your chin. “Ah, finally caught you staring. What, do you want to have a little look?” He teased softly. Your eyes widened at the sudden grasp on your chin. You gulped and nodded a tiny bit.
He got up and started unbuckling his belt. He stared at you the whole time. Mike pulled off his pants and boxers. You couldn’t believe how long he was. It was the first time you’ve ever seen anything like this. “You’re so fucking cute..” He mumbled as he grabbed the back of your head, pulling your head down to his cock. You gasped, getting nervous. “Oh! M-Mike.” You muttered. He watched as you looked at his dick, his member twitched a tiny bit.
He gently caressed your hair. “Ever given anyone a blowjob?” Mike cooed a tiny bit with a tiny chuckle. You blushed softly as you looked up into his blue eyes again, slowly shaking your head. “Open up then, I’ll teach you.” He pulled your head to his cock, grabbing it as he gently slapped it against your cheek. Your mouth went agape. “Mike, maybe I shouldn’t.” You whined a tiny bit. Words couldn’t even begin to explain how nervous you were, especially because he was so fucking huge. He sighed and let go of your head. “Fine, I’ll let you go at your own pace.”
You slowly started licking his length as he let out soft grunts and groans, praising you constantly. He wanted you to take it all, but he didn’t want to force you to do anything. He wasn’t like that. Once you realized you couldn’t do it anymore, you slowly got on your feet. He sighed softly and tilted his head to the side. “Nervous, sweetheart?”
He smiled and gently tossed you on the bed, taking off your clothes. He felt how wet you are through your virgin panties. Mike let out a soft chuckle as he glanced into your eyes. “Oh..has Eli ever done this to you? Has he forced you to do this? I doubt it..” He cooed softly and gently kissed your cheek, taking off your panties. He laid down as he flipped you on top of him, making you gasp. “M-Mike. I’m a bit nervous.”
“I understand. It’s your first time, just take as much as you can, my good little doll.” He gently grabbed your hips, hovering your tight hole over his tip. He looked into your eyes with lust, smiling. You gulped as you slowly lowered yourself onto his cock. He let out a soft groan and slapped your ass lightly. “Oh, you’ve got some good pussy, baby.” “Mike! Oh my gosh..!” He chuckled at your moans and whines, wanting to hear them more.
Mike moved you up and down his cock, lightly. He knew how sensitive you were, especially from those cute little noises you made. You moaned and whimpered repeatedly as Mike praised you. He gently kissed your cheek and closed his eyes, placing his hand on your thigh as he used his other hand to move you up and down his cock, like a sex doll. “Fuck-Eli could never do this. He could never fuck you like I do.” He muttered, just wanting to go on and on about how much he hated Eli for just using you.
He groaned loudly as he moved you a bit rougher, but still going gentle for you. “Mike! Please! I-oh my gosh!” You whined. He felt so good in you, but he was spreading you apart. No, nearly ripping you apart. He smiled at moans and whimpers, getting more and more closer to just fucking cumming right in that tiny pussy of yours. “You’re so cute, so petite. Who would want to take advantage of you for no reason?”
That’s when the door opened. You both immediately stopped and turned towards the door, covering your chest as Mike let out a tiny groan. Eli was standing there. He looked away for a quick second before finally realizing what was going on. “Hey what the fuck!?” He muttered, storming towards you guys. You immediately got nervous as you got off Mike. “Eli no! Don’t..don’t..do anything!” Though that didn’t do anything. Eli punched Mike a couple times as you tried to push him away. He cursed some more before walking out the room and slamming the door.
Mike laid on the ground, covering his right eye as he let out a quiet whimper. You immediately checked on him, very concerned. “M-Mike? Mike..are you okay?” He slowly nodded as he sighed with a tiny chuckle. “Let’s just..get you cleaned up and in clean clothes, okay? He’s a fucking jackass. Don’t worry about it.”
You slowly nodded as Mike sat up, picking you up and leading you to the shower. He didn’t give any shits about Eli catching you guys, at least now he understands the consequences of his actions.

High Infidelity
Joseph Quinn x Fem!Reader
Summary: Did you really have to chart the constellations in his eyes? Did you really have to tell him how he brought you back to life?
Author's Note: Your careless words pierced right through my heart and lingered at the back of my mind. I filled your cup everyday only for you to spill it out like it was nothing. I cried oceans for you, only for you to let me drown in my own tears. You stabbed me with your razor-sharp words and asked me why I was bleeding. You tore my castle and left me in my own ruins, only to ask me why i'm so broken. I was six feet on the ground and you stood tall, holding the shovel for my funeral. You were a monstrous deep ocean and I was drowning with no life line to hold on to. - From blairrwaldorfs notes app.
Disclaimer: 18+, emotional abuse, mention of harming, infidelity

part one - part two - part three - part four - epilogue
It wasn’t like infidelity was something you wanted to do. It wasn’t like an illicit affair was something you would choose because honestly, everything happened so fast. The forbidden affair that you had started was not something you were proud of. At this point, you apparently weren’t making good decisions so, fuck everything else, right? It wasn’t like Eli appreciated anything that you have done for him. It wasn’t like he appreciated the love that you gave. He tossed it away the minute he started controlling everything you did. He tossed away the genuine love that you were willing to give when he started doubting you on every little thing that you did.
“How are you?” Joe asked, brushing your hair softly.
The both of you laid on the hotel bed naked, your head on Joe’s bare chest. His fingers softly drew circles on your bare arm. You had lied to Eli that you were needed at work on a Saturday because of some photoshoot. However, Joe had taken you out of town and rented a hotel room to be with you. Some people might like the thrill of sneaking around town with their forbidden lover but to you, you were always in a fight or flight mode. You were terrified that Eli would find out about this.
Terrified for your and Joe’s safety.
“Okay.” You whispered, burying your face on his neck.
Joe slightly smiled, pulling you close in his arms. He could feel your body tensed up every time you two would run off. You both have been doing this for over a month now and so far, Eli hadn’t figured it out. Joe knew one of these days, he would and Joe was afraid of what he’d do to you.
He was always afraid for your safety.
Joe had suggested getting help and reporting him for emotionally abusing you everyday, but you kept refusing to. He didn’t understand why because he knew how much you wanted to run away from that hellhole. There was something that you weren’t telling him, but he didn’t want to press you on the subject.
Joe pulled the duvet covers over you, feeling your body shake in his arms. However, he realized it wasn’t because you were cold. You were quietly sobbing on his chest.
“Hey, it’s alright.” Joe cooed, rubbing your bare back gently and planting a soft kiss on your hair.
“What is it?” He asked.
“I… I’m sorry I keep crying.” You sniffed, gazing up at him and wiping your tears.
Joe gazed down at you, wiping the remaining tears on your cheek with his thumb.
“Don’t apologize for how you’re feeling. It’s okay.” Joe reassured you. “You don’t have to feel that way with me.”
“What did I do to deserve you?” You exhaled a sharp breath.
“Hey, listen to me.” Joe cupped your face with his hands, eyes staring deeply into yours. “You’re enough. You are so smart, beautiful and such an amazing woman. Don’t ever let anyone tell you you’re not strong because you are.”
Another tear rolled down your cheeks as tears welled up in your eyes. You nodded your head, a small smile tugging on your lips.
Joe was different.
He was soft. He was understanding and patient with you. Even after everything you had told him about yourself and Eli. He stuck around and held your hand. He was the lightest thing in your life right now, and you couldn’t be more grateful. Sometimes you didn’t understand how it became this way. Sometimes you didn’t understand how you brought yourself into this situation but there was one thing you knew for sure: You didn’t want to hurt Joe nor want to lose him.
Pressing your lips on Joe’s soft pink ones, he smiled through the kiss as he pulled you over to him. You towered over him, straddling his hips as you ran your fingers through his hair. A small moan escaped your lips, making Joe smile through the kiss again.
“God, I love that sound.” Joe whispered, pulling away from the kiss.
A soft laughter escaped from you and a wide smile tugged on your face. For the first time ever, Joe saw you smile. A genuine one. For a month, you would give him just small sad smiles but sometimes, he knew they were fake. He understood why, but he never thought he would ever see your real smile.
Brushing your pink lips softly with his thumb, his chocolate button eyes sparkled as he stared at you.
“What?” You furrowed your brows.
“Your smile…” Joe murmured. “It’s so beautiful.”
Blood rushed to your cheeks, turning them into a nice color of rosy pink. Butterflies invaded every bone of your body as Joe reached up to give you a soft quick kiss.
“I never saw you smile or heard you laugh like that.” Joe said. “C’mere.”
Settling back next to him, you laid your head on his chest again as he pulled you close on his side.
Joe accepted you even when you had opened yourself up to him and let him see every dark corner. Joe understood you on your darkest days, and he held your hand when you needed him the most. He was the light that was slowly coming through the little cracks of the wall that you had built around yourself, and he was slowly breaking it.
He was slowly breaking you out of this prison, and you were ready to fly free with him.
Going back home at the end of the day was the one thing that you dreaded the most because you knew Eli was waiting for you. You had stopped arguing with him lately. You had kept your mouth shut every time he had said something that pierced right through your heart. You kept the pain because you were exhausted from trying. You kept it inside of you and continued to act like everything between the two of you was okay.
“What’s wrong?” You asked, voice cold.
Eli entered the kitchen that night, sighing heavily and wrapping his arms around you. He hugged you from behind and leaned his chin against your shoulder as you washed the dishes.
“Had a long day.” Eli murmured, kissing the back of your neck.
You knew what that meant, but you didn’t want him to touch you anymore. You were done.
“We can watch a movie.” You suggested.
You lifted your shoulder to push his chin away. Your hands grabbed his arms that were around you and pushed them away before walking around him to grab the towel. You could see from the corner of your eye that Eli was standing there in surprise from your actions. His stare on the back of your head was sending shivers down your spine, terrified that he was going to start lashing out again.
Terrified that the monster inside of him was going to come out again.
“Or we can do something else.” He pressed his body against your back, feeling the bulge that was growing in his pants.
“I’m not really in the mood tonight, Eli. It’s been a long day.” You said, trying to unlock his arms that were tightening around your waist.
“That’s why I could make it better.” Eli whispered, kissing your cheek softly.
He slid his hands under your shirt and squeezed your breasts, a small moan escaping from his lips as he sucked on the skin of your neck. You felt your heart stop, trying to find a pulse to bring you back to life but there was nothing.
“I’m not in the mood, okay?” You heard your voice raised, forcefully pushing his hands away from your body and turned to face him with anger washing over you.
Suddenly, you saw the tears welling up in Eli’s eyes, and his lips were now pouting. He looked like a kid getting his candy taken away from him, but you had enough. You felt nothing on the inside, and you didn’t feel bad for him.
Not even one bit.
He could fucking cry a whole ocean in front of you, and you would swim in his tears happily. You didn’t give a fuck about how he felt anymore because since when did he gave a fuck about what you want? About how you felt?
The anger was bubbling inside of you, and you knew the fire lighting it was getting bigger.
“You haven’t touched me for a month.” Eli argued, walking closer to you. “Do you even find me attractive?”
You held in your screams. You felt Eli’s chain around your neck getting pulled tighter, and you couldn't breathe. You were scratching the surface that he was dragging you into, trying to scream your way out of it, but you just couldn’t.
You couldn’t find your voice nor a scream inside of you.
“Your silence is saying a lot.” Eli’s voice was now cold.
His words cut you like a knife, and you were bleeding all over this kitchen. Eli didn’t even realize it. He just kept piercing his knife through your chest until you were lifeless. Your eyes were starting to go dark, and your vision was starting to get blurry.
“You should feel lucky that someone loves you. I don’t have anyone.” Eli continued. “If you don’t love me then, I understand. You are always going to be my girl.”
His girl.
You wanted to vomit.
Tears welled up in your eyes. How could he say something like that and not feel anything inside of him? How could he gaslit you like this and feel as if this was love?
As you stood there paralyzed in front of him, you felt that anger inside of you finally exploding from the words that he just told you. You couldn’t find the Eli that you had fallen for when you first met him. Maybe this was him all along, and you were too blind to see it.
Maybe he was a monster all along.
“Your girl?” Your voice was low, but it shook in anger.
Eli’s eyes caught yours, and you dropped the towel and plate on the sink, a loud clatter echoed the haunted kitchen. You took one step closer to him, your dark eyes never leaving him.
“That girl that you considered to be yours has been dead a long time ago. She is buried deep six feet underground.” You sneered through your teeth.
You saw the expression on Eli’s face changed as he took a step closer and took your hands in his, but you were quick to pull them away. Suddenly, his face went from guilt to fear as if he saw something had snapped inside of you.
Well, he was right.
He finally had struck a nerve, and he was about to feel your storm’s wrath. You weren’t going to let him start gaslighting you again. You weren’t going to let him pull you in again and leave you to drown. You weren’t going to let him chain you up any longer.
“Babe, that’s not what I meant for you to feel.” Eli started to pull his puppy dog eyes. “I love you and-”
“No, you don’t!” You exclaimed. “Stop saying that because you don’t!”
“Yes, I do.” Eli was practically begging in front of you. “I don’t know what I’ll do without you.”
You watched as Eli fell to his knees, clinging to your legs but you were dead on the inside. You couldn’t be brought back anymore for you to feel something for him. You couldn’t find the energy nor could feel your heart beat for him. You were lifeless, and this monster was begging for your dead body to wake itself up after killing you so many times.
“I don’t love you anymore.” You finally said the words, pulling his arms away from you but he only tightened his arms around your legs.
“Get off, Eli.” You warned, wincing from his grip. “I said get off! Get the fuck up!”
Your voice shook.
Your whole body trembled as anger invaded your veins as Eli finally let go of you. Tears were welling up in his eyes as he got up from the floor and cupped your face in his hands.
“Stop.” You whispered, looking away from him and pulling his hands away from your face.
“I love you.” Eli murmured, tears rolling down his cheeks. “I love you, please.”
He pulled you in his embrace, but your body was still. You stood there, your limbs couldn’t move as he sobbed on your shoulder. Your eyes were staring into the blank emptiness in front of you.
“Tell me what I can do to fix this.” Eli added.
There was nothing he could do because the relationship between the both of you had burned a long time ago and whatever you two had left was the remaining ashes. He couldn’t fix this anymore. You were left in the ruins of your relationship and the only way out of this was for you to finally get up and walk away from it.
“Nothing. It’s over.” You said sternly.
“No, no.” Eli shook his head, denial washing over him. “There must be something. What am I doing wrong?”
You couldn’t help but let out a scoff as you heard what he asked you.
“The fact that you’re asking me that is what’s wrong, Eli!” You exclaimed, forcefully pushing him away from you. “You don’t even know what you’re doing to me!”
“All I ever did was love you.” Eli replied, tears rolling down his cheeks.
“Stop it.” You murmured, shaking your head. “Stop crying!”
Eli stared at you, his eyes blinking away the tears. His eyes widened, terrified at the person he was looking at right now. In all honesty, you didn’t recognize yourself at the moment either. You felt like someone had possessed you, and you couldn’t control your body anymore. It was almost like you were standing in the corner of this kitchen and watched whatever it was that took control of your body.
Your soul was somewhere else now.
“If this is what you think love is, then I'd rather die a thousand times!” You barked. “Because that is how it feels like being with you for the last two years! Trapped, choking in my own tears, and slowly dying, and you don’t even realize it at all! You kept trying to tell me that you love me but…”
You sobbed in front of Eli, and you hated it.
You hated the fact that you were so vulnerable in front of him. You hated how you were crying over this. You hated how you let your walls finally break, and he was there standing in front of you, watching it burn.
You shook your head, wiping the tears that rolled down your cheeks and tried to catch your breath.
“But…this isn't love.” You finally said. “This was a prison, and you enjoyed controlling me every second of the day. You enjoyed watching me suffer and gave you everything I had until I was left with nothing. Until… my world just revolved around you, and you didn’t even appreciate any of it. It was never enough for you.”
“That’s not true. I love you.” Eli whispered.
You shook your head and said, “I don’t. I want this over.”
You watched as Eli stared at you, eyes blinking with tears. He finally took a step back from you. He couldn’t recognize you anymore nor could you recognize him either. He wiped his tears as you watched him walk out of the kitchen. The front door opened and slammed shut as you closed your eyes, sliding your back against the kitchen counter and sobbed on the floor.
The kitchen was silent. It was a ghostly scene, and the only thing that echoed was the sobs that you let out, burying your face in the palm of your hands.
The flat was filled with silence. Almost like the peace and quiet after the storm.
Your body felt paralyzed. It was just now that you realized that your body had been aching lately. You have been feeling every emotion that you hid inside of you in your bones and now, you were finally feeling every single pain in your body. You were feeling it in your veins, and your heart beat slowly as you finally got up from the kitchen floor and made your way towards the bedroom.
You couldn’t stay one second longer in this flat.
It was haunted by all the painful memories, and you didn’t want that anymore.
You passed by your vanity and for a moment, you saw your reflection in the mirror. You haven’t looked at yourself for a long time. You turned to stare at yourself for a second and saw the dark circles under your eyes. Red puffy wet eyes from crying, face all red and lips trembling.
The glimmer in your eyes had gone dimmed.
It was a terrifying image of you.
You couldn’t recognize the person staring back at you.
You kept replaying every decision that you made in your life, and you couldn’t find where you went wrong. You kept wondering what your life would have been if you hadn't met Eli. You weren’t like this. You used to have friends, you used to go out, and you used to do all the things you love.
When was the last time you did something that you loved? Went shopping? Went out to have dinner with your friends?
When was the last time you talked to your friends?
You got lost along the way when you entered this relationship, and you couldn’t find your way back. You have been trying to pick your broken pieces that scattered all over the floor but every time you glued it back together, Eli knew how to break them again.
Entering this illicit affair with Joe, you didn’t realize how love could be so light. You didn’t realize how blinded you have been ever since Eli has broken every part of you.
Grabbing your duffel bag, you knew you only had a couple hours before Eli would probably come back. Grabbing every single piece of clothing that you owned, you threw them all in your bag and grabbed the important documents that you have and slid them in your purse.
You needed to get out.
This was your last chance before Eli could completely break you.
Walking out the front door, you looked over your shoulder for a moment. If you walked out of this flat right now, you knew there was no turning back. You knew that this was it. You knew if one day, you would regret it, there was no turning back. Taking a deep breath, you closed the door behind you. You took one step from the front door and knew that the decision had been made.
You were going to swim to the shore and taste the freedom that you deserved.
No more drowning.
No more choking in your own tears.
You would be free.
Getting inside the cab, you could see the flat building getting smaller from the rearview mirror.
You didn’t want to look back anymore. You wanted to look forward to the long road ahead.
“Hey.” Joe smiled the moment he saw you standing at his front door.
Immediately, his eyes shifted to the bags you were holding in your hands. His smile immediately faded as soon as he saw your red puffy eyes, and he didn’t hesitate to quickly grab your things and let you inside his house.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t call. It happened so fast.” You panicked, your fingers playing nervously. “I… I just didn’t know where else to go and…”
Joe shook his head, his eyes scanning every part of you, making sure you weren’t hurt. He lifted both your arms and immediately checked for any signs of bruises. He saw the tears welling up in your eyes as he cupped your face in his hands, wiping the tears that were rolling down your cheeks.
“Hey, it’s okay.” Joe whispered, taking you in his arms.
Wrapping your arms around his neck, you tightly embraced him. You could barely hold yourself together, and Joe was the only one who was keeping you together at this moment before you could completely break altogether.
“I ended it.” You murmured, burying your face on his shoulder.
You felt Joe’s cheek leaned against your head, holding you tighter in his arms. Quietly, he took your hand in his, leading you to his bedroom. You sat at the edge of his bed, wiping your tears. Joe knelt down in front of you, holding your hands in his. His worried eyes studied you as he waited until you were ready to talk.
“Let me get you some water.” Joe got up and quickly walked out of the bedroom.
Not seconds later, he came back with a glass of water in his hand. You haven’t said a word since then as Joe pulled you close in his arms, caressing your arm softly.
“We had a fight.” You managed to finally say a word. “He was begging for me to stay, but I couldn’t… I couldn’t.”
Joe gripped his hold of you tighter as you buried your face on his chest.
“It’s okay.” He cooed.
“I told him everything and at the end, he still wouldn’t admit what he had done.”
“Hey,” Joe pulled away and stared deep into your eyes. “I want you to know that you’re so brave and so strong for doing this, okay? I’m here with you every step of the way.”
Joe wiped your tears, pressing a soft kiss on your forehead. “Don’t ever let anyone tell you you’re not strong.” He whispered.
You nodded your head, every part of you yearning for his touch as you stayed in Joe’s arms. You felt safe. You felt comfortable and warm.
“Thank you.” You whispered, wrapping your arms around his neck in an embrace.
Joe helped you lay on his bed and pulled the covers over you. Your dark circles under your eyes along with your red puffy eyes were telling him a lot that you needed to rest. That you needed to stop for a moment and finally let everything settle after everything that happened tonight.
Your exhausted body moved close next to his, your eyes closed, feeling like you could sleep for an eternity in Joe’s arms. You could hear his heart beating in a steady pace, his arms were the walls of your new home that kept you safe.
“Stay, please.” You murmured.
Joe couldn’t help but smile as he gently squeezed your arm that was around his waist. A soft kiss planted on your hair again as you let out a soft hum.
“Get some rest, love.” He murmured. “I’ll be here when you wake up.”

Casey Novak x autistic fem!reader Warnings: some explicit language, mentions of sex, mostly just fluff on fluff on fluff Prompt(s): From novelbear, thank you! 😊 Word Count: 2.3k
Summary: You bring Casey home to meet your parents and siblings. Adorableness ensues.
Casey's leg bounced up and down as she stared out the passenger window of the rental car. You were only a half hour away from the Nashville airport, and already the crowded city streets had given way to fields, barns, and the occasional herd of cattle on a hillside. Bluegrass played softly through the speakers. You sighed contentedly, knowing just when to turn, just when to slow around a curve, just when to watch for deer crossing the road. You were almost home. Casey let out a shaky breath and you took her hand, pulling it to your lips for a quick kiss before lacing your fingers through hers. "Casey," you sang, trying to get her out of her head. She didn't answer.
"Honey, you're gonna be fine."
"God, I hope they like me," she muttered, her breath fogging up the car window.
"Of course they'll like you. What's not to like?"
"Oh, I don't know," Casey replied sarcastically, throwing up her hands. "I'm a lawyer. I'm blunt as shit. I probably swear too much. And I'm fucking their little girl."
"Okay, first of all, I'm not little. I'm almost thirty. So that'd be a dumb thing for them to care about." Casey said nothing. "Secondly, you're the only person I've ever brought home. If anyone's gonna be scared, it's them! They don't want to scare you off. Chances are not good that I'd ever bring someone home again." Casey bit at her fingernails. You batted them away from her mouth. "Quit with that, you just got them done."
"I'm just saying it's a lot of pressure!" she said, pulling at the strings of her hoodie.
"This is a lot of pressure!?" You laughed. "You made me meet your parents two months in! And you gave me one day's notice!"
"Yeah, but they live in the city, so it wasn't a big deal. I see them all the time. And it wasn't Christmas."
"Oh, don't even start. You were so butthurt when I went home for Thanksgiving without you."
You pulled down your street, houses twinkling with holiday lights, and waved at a neighbor walking a dog.
"Who's that?" Casey asked.
"I don't know."
"You just wave at people you don't know?!"
"Here? Yes. In New York? No."
You pulled to a stop in your family's driveway and grinned at their decorations–a giant pride flag, made entirely of Christmas lights.
"Wow," Casey said, gawking at the display.
"What can I say? They're aggressive allies."
You sat silently in the car for a moment, then took Casey's hand. "You ready?"
You nearly leapt out of your seats as two hands slammed on the driver's side door.
"Y/N!!! Come on, come on, come on!"
You smiled big, eyes sparkling, stimming quickly at your ears and shaking your head. It was your baby brother, Eli. Not such a baby anymore–16 years old. You threw open the car door and he barreled into you, squeezing his arms around your neck as tightly as he could.
"Who's here?!" he said, bouncing up and down with his hand on your shoulders. "Y/N's here!!!"
Casey watched you from a distance. You'd told her all about your youngest siblings–the twins. That they were, quite literally, one in millions. Fraternal twins, both born with Down syndrome. Casey knew, from you, that Eli loved Mario Kart and Les Misérables and called once a week to sing "One Day More" with you. She knew Winnie was a hotshot in the local Special Olympics basketball league (even at 4' 10"), a budding artist, and "kind of a bitch right now," as you'd told her on the way over.
"Can you say that about someone with Down syndrome?" Casey had asked.
You'd scoffed. "People with disabilities can be bitches just as much as anyone else."
Now, as she watched you with your brother, she got it. She got it when you said that they were your favorite people in the world which, until now, had made her ridiculously jealous. She got it when you said that you would give up everything to take care of them when your parents weren't able to anymore. Your face was alight with so much joy, so much connection. Connection that Casey knew you didn't get many other places, aside from her. And she knew then that she'd give up everything for you to have that, even if it meant moving to help you take care of your siblings when the time came.
When you and Eli finally separated, he turned his attention to Casey.
"Hi, Eli!" she said, bending down to be a bit closer to his height. "I'm Casey."
Unlike Winnie, who could talk the ear off a donkey, Eli was mostly non-verbal. He had autism, too, like you, and for this reason, you'd always felt a deeper connection to him. You knew you weren't supposed to have favorite siblings, but Eli was yours. So when he decided to use his limited words to talk with Casey, it was a big deal.
He looked first at Casey, then at you, and asked, "Girlfriend?"
You nodded, beaming. "Yep! Yeah, Casey's my girlfriend."
He stepped closer looking Casey over. After a moment, he seemed to decide that he liked her.
"Casey, big squeeze," he said, and wrapped his arms around her waist. Eli pronounced her name "kissy." You thought your heart might explode. She patted his back and looked to you for a translation.
"Big squeeze means he wants you to hug him as tight as you can. Like, really tight, to the point that you're afraid you might hurt him." She obliged and he laughed in her grip. When she let him go, he patted her on the back and jogged inside.
"It helps with, uh, autism stuff. The deep pressure," you explained.
"Does it help you, too?" Casey asked as you took your luggage out of the trunk.
"What?"
"The big squeeze. Do you like those, too?"
You smiled at her, quick and bright. "Yeah. Yeah, I really do."
"Come here." She pulled you into her and squeezed as hard as she could, using every muscle in her body to put pressure on you, flexing so hard you could feel her shaking. Your body, on the other hand, felt light as a feather, as if all the stress, all the tension in it was seeping out. When she let you go, you sighed happily, your body tingly. You felt almost high.
"Yeah, we're gonna do a lot more of that," Casey decided, observing how much you'd relaxed.
Tennessee wasn't cold, not like New York, but the warmth from inside hit you hard anyway. "Come on," Eli urged, impatiently motioning you toward the living room, where you knew your parents would be sitting. You helped Casey out of her coat, then took off yours, hanging them by the door.
"Mom, Dad!" Eli yelled. "Who's here!?"
Your parents walked into the kitchen, absolutely beaming at you. They'd never say it, but they'd given up on you dating. You just hadn't been interested. They'd gotten used to the idea that you could be happy without a relationship, after years of you sending them articles about asexuality. But you could tell they were happy to see you in love.
"Hey, y'all," your mom said, wrapping Casey in a huge hug that took her off guard.
You smiled as your dad did the same to you, kissing the top of your head. "Hey, sweet pea," he whispered. "Glad you're home."
Casey cleared her throat and reached out to shake your dad's hand. His biker-style beard and imposing height always made him seem scarier than he really was. "Mr. Y/L/N, it's very nice to meet y–" Once again, she was cut off by a bear hug.
"Welcome," your dad said, nearly smothering her. "We're so glad you're here."
"Where's Winnie?" you asked, looking around.
"Upstairs on her iPad." Your mom rolled her eyes. "Want me to get her?"
"Nah. She'll figure out I'm here eventually."
You all made your way to the living room, where Eli promptly got on his own iPad, put his headphones on, and proceeded to perform a series of silent, choreographed dances in front of the Christmas tree. Casey watched him, amused and delighted that neither you nor your parents seemed to find this out of the ordinary at all.
"How was your trip?" your dad asked, lowering himself into a seat next to your mom.
"Good," you said, taking Casey's hand in yours when you noticed she was picking at her fingernails again. "The airport wasn't even too bad."
"I bet it'll be a shit show tomorrow..." your dad mused, thinking about Christmas Eve flights of years past.
"So, Casey," your mom started, clearly eager to get to know the only person who'd ever managed to turn your head. "Tell us about yourself. Y/N says you're a lawyer?"
"That's right." You squeezed Casey's hand as she spoke. "I'm an Assistant District Attorney at the Manhattan DA's office. I prosecute cases for the Special Victims Unit."
"Special Victims?" your dad asked. "Like victims of assault?"
She glanced at your brother who shimmied in the background. "Uh..."
"He can't hear," you told her.
"Yes. Assault, rape, sexually-motivated homicide, child abuse, things like that."
"That's gotta be such a hard job," your mom empathized.
"It's admirable work." Your dad nodded approvingly at Casey, and she seemed to relax a bit. "Those pieces of garbage deserve to rot in hell. But jail's a start."
You rolled your eyes. Your dad was a passionate man, with a tendency to turn more aggressively passionate at any mention or hint of violence toward women and children. Come to think of it, Casey reminded you of him in that way.
"I couldn't agree more," Casey told him.
"You met playing softball?" your mom asked, clearly trying to redirect the conversation.
Casey's face brightened. "We did!" She wrapped an arm around your shoulder and you leaned into her, blushing a little. Your parents shared a glance; they had never seen you this close to anyone. "We're on the same rec team. Y/N's the catcher and I pitch."
"Still got that catcher's gear?" your dad joked, winking at you.
You shot him a glare. "I know I'm not that much taller than I was when I was twelve but, no, Dad, the gear from my middle school team doesn't fit anymore."
"Ooh!" he exclaimed, sitting up and pointing at Casey. "Has Y/N ever told you about her softball nickname?"
"No, she hasn't," Casey said, smirking at you.
"I coached her team when she was little. She played catcher, of course." Your dad leaned forward, as if he and Casey were in on a delightful secret together.
"But she would jump forward to grab the ball," he continued. "Which was obviously a terrible idea because–"
"She's gonna get hit," Casey finished, nodding.
"Exactly. She was really good, but she always jumped out and we kept telling her, 'You can't be pouncing like a tiger, you're gonna get hurt.' And one day, sure enough, she leaned forward and bam! She was laid out. Thank god she had the helmet on, or it probably would've cracked her skull."
Casey laughed, but placed a hand absentmindedly on the side of your head, as if checking to make sure you really were okay, all these years later.
"After that," your dad chuckled. "Word got around with other parents and the girls on the team, and they started calling her El Tigre. For the rest of her softball career–El Tigre!"
Your cheeks were burning as Casey and your parents laughed together, but your heart was warm, too.
"Okay, okay," you said, "I'm gonna go say hey to Winnie." You looked at Casey. "You want to come?"
"Sure!" she said, standing next to you and placing a hand on the small of your back as you moved toward the stairs. You looked back at your parents to see them watching you intently, holding hands, nearly bursting with happiness. They liked her. You could already tell.
As you emerged upstairs, you gently grabbed Casey's waist and pressed her lightly against the wall.
A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "I thought we were going to see your sister."
"We are," you said, standing on your tiptoes to kiss her softly. You felt her body melt into yours, the stress of the day dissipating. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay first."
Casey sighed contentedly and brushed your hair behind your ears. "I'm good. They're really nice people, your family. They really love you."
"Yeah, well," you scoffed. "Wait until you meet this one."
You knocked on Winnie's door and threw it open when she called, "What!?"
Winnie sat at her desk in all her diminutive glory, Special Olympics medals hanging from a cork board and Usher's "Yeah!" blaring from the speakers.
"'Sup, nerd," you said, standing in the doorway.
Winnie gaped, looking from you to Casey.
"What are you doing here, Y/N?" she finally said.
"Uh, it's Christmas?" you responded.
Winnie pointed at Casey. "Who are you?"
You could tell that Casey was holding back laughter. "I'm Casey."
"You're Y/N's friend?" Winnie asked, leaning back and swiveling in her desk chair.
"No, I'm not her friend. I'm her girlfriend," Casey said as the two of you took a seat on the edge of Winnie's bed.
Winnie seemed to think very deeply about this. "Her girlfriend?"
You both nodded.
"Like, when you have a crush?"
You blushed.
"Yep," Casey nodded, patting your leg. "I have a big crush on Y/N."
Casey shot you a cheesy grin. She was loving this.
Winnie smirked and waggled her eyebrows. "Do you kiss!?"
"Oh my god," you groaned, rubbing your forehead.
Casey on the other hand, seemed to be living for this conversation.
"Oh, absolutely," Casey told her. "I do kiss Y/N. I love to kiss her."
Winnie scoffed and turned back to her desk, fiddling with her iPad.
"What about you, Winnie?" Casey continued, crossing her legs and getting comfortable. It blew your mind that Casey seemed to be getting along with Winnie so well. Or maybe Casey just liked pushing people's buttons. God knows, Winnie was nothing but buttons to push these days. "Do you have a girlfriend? Or a boyfriend?"
The look of absolute condescension on Winnie's smug face finally drove Casey to the edge. She burst out laughing. "Why are you looking at me like that!?"
"I don't have time for that," Winnie said. "I have to work out." She pulled up her sleeve and flexed her bicep.
"Damn!" Casey exclaimed, standing up to squeeze Winnie's arm. "You are strong!"
Winnie pulled her sleeve back down. "Yeah, I know."
"I hear you're really good at basketball," Casey said conspiratorially, squatting down next to Winnie's desk. "I'm more of a baseball girl myself, but you wanna play tomorrow?"
"Yeah!" Winnie exclaimed, genuinely excited before she remembered she was too cool for us. "But I'll win."
Casey raised her eyebrows. "That's some big talk."
Winnie shrugged. "I can't help it that I'm the best."
"You got me there."
You gestured to Casey and she followed you to the door.
"Y/N can't play, though," Winnie added, glancing back at Casey.
"Aw, why not?" Casey protested. "I love playing with Y/N."
Winnie shook her head. "She is really bad."
"Ouch, Winnie," you said, glaring at her.
Casey cracked up again, and you elbowed her in the stomach.
"Good night, loser," you called as you shut Winnie's door.
"Good night, dork!" she yelled back.
Casey had tears in her eyes from laughing so hard.
"See?" you whispered to her. "I told you. A little bitch."
Casey grabbed your face in her hands and pressed her forehead to yours. She kissed you quickly, then laughed, a wide grin on her face.
"What's this for?" you asked, as if you needed a reason.
"Oh, it's nothing," Casey said, serious, before giggling, "I just have such a big crush on you."
"Ugh, stop!" You pushed her away. "That's so dumb."
"It's cute!" she protested, and you didn't know if you'd ever seen her this giddy. She came up behind you and wrapped her arms around your waist, pressing her face into your neck. "Come on, you say it, too."
You rolled your eyes, but a smile tugged at the corners of your mouth. "I have a massive, huge, heartstopping crush on you, Casey."
She buried her face into you, planting kisses up and down your neck as her fingers tickled your stomach. You squirmed and giggled and shushed her as you both headed back downstairs. You didn't want to seem too in love. Your parents would never let it go.

The tailor shop was not always your family’s tailor shop. When your mother and father first immigrated to Camden, it was the one shop that agreed to hire them. Mr. Kahn was the originator, an older gentleman with large round glasses, the most illustrious beard you’ve ever seen, and the most soothing voice. When he saw the the pitiful young couple that would one day be your parents, he not only opened the doors of his shop, but his arms and his heart and his home.
Your father had been a tailor by trade in his home country, and quickly picked up the new skills and tricks that Mr. Kahn had so generously gifted. Mr. Kahn had no children himself, and his whole family had to stay in his own country as well. Like two lonely ships at sea your parents and Mr. Kahn found each other, and built a a new family. He was there for the birth of you and Eli and your brother, and there for the arrival of your grandparents. And when he passed away, he gave the shop and the home above the shop to your family, his other family. In honor of Mr. Kahn, your father and uncle kept the name Kahn’s and Sons. Though people knew you weren’t the technical Kahn Sons, everyone gave their regards to the beautiful picture of Mr. Kahn that hung in the front. His bright and shining smile and twinkling eyes kept watch over the shop, your family, and anyone who crossed the threshold. Anyone who looked at the painting smiled, remembering his gentle voice and his grand laughter.
That painting is the only thing that survives the flames.
As the sky turns a pale white, all that can be heard above the shocked voice and the rises smoke are the screams and wails of your mother, screaming and asking God why why why? Your aunt and grandmother holding her and weeping as well, praying and begging for an answer. You sister Esther on your hip keeps whispering, “What happened? What happened to our store sissy?”
And you have no answer. You have nothing in your chest but a numb buzzing, and acid in your throat. You feel hot hot tears making canyons in the ash that covers your face. You see Eli, your father, uncle, brother, grandfather, and other neighbors trying to move out any molten machines from the wreckage. When you make eye contact with Eli, he just shakes his head, tears having wiped the majority of the ash away. He looks at you as if yo say, “I don’t even know why we keep looking.”
Esther begins to cry, the smoke bothering her eyes, and you just begin to rock her and walk down the street to take her away from the wreckage. No child should have to see something so horrible as this.
People begin to stop and ask what happened. Who did this? Why Kahn’s? Why your father’s shop? You just walked past them. How would you know? How could anyone know? All you knew is that your sister was crying and coughing too hard. You just needed to get away. You just needed to get away. Just away.
On the other side of Camden, Alfie Solomons walks in to the office, after a long night of praying and bargaining for his secretary to be at her desk when he came in.
Despite his pleas, he is not surprised to see that her desk has been untouched, the stove has not been lit, and the air is too cold to breathe in. He rubs his face roughly, more for punishment than for comfort, and caresses the calendar on the abandoned desk, before tenderly picking it up and taking it to his own desk. Alfie found himself soon flipping through those wrinkled and pressed pages. Noticing the arrows and tiny scribbles on your near penmanship. As he further explores he finds himself chuckling lowly at the small characters of Tommy, Ollie, and even him and Cyril. He notes the repetition of his own name, with a small delicate heart over the i. He nearly completely smudges away the small heart with his tracings when Ollie knocks him back to Camden, “Uhm Alfie…”
“What?”
And that’s when he noticed it… the silence. There were people in the bakery, same amount as usual all doing what the need to do. But he heard… nothing. It was silent. All he could hear were the scuffing thuds of work boots against worn down floor boards, and the moaning creaks of barrels being turned over. Alfie got up from his desk, brushed passed Ollie to look at his men. But they weren’t his men. These were phantoms wearing the clothes of his men. “What the fuck is wrong with them?”
Ollie tenderly stepped behind Alfie, “Alfie… there was a fire last night…”
The blood in his heart immediately froze. His lungs shrank in his chest, and the air was suddenly sucked out of the room. “Where?” Alfie asked, though he already knew.
“Kahn’s… Alfie it’s scorched.”
Alfie couldn’t even finish listening. He had to go. He had to go. Damn the secrecy. Damn what your family knew or didn’t know. Damn what the men would think, seeing him run to see if his w… secretary was hurt. That didn’t matter. The Mad Baker be damned. “Ollie. Get the car. Grab two men from downstairs. We’re going to Kahn’s now. NOW!”
Though the drive to your home from the office was merely 20 minutes, a drive he knew well, it felt as though it took years off his life. The closer the car got, the denser the crowds of people were. The more clearly he could see the dissipating smoke and ash.
When Alfie was a young child, he struggled with fear. Thunder sent him under the covers, loud fights sent him behind his mothers skirts. The dark petrified him, necessitating two candles to defend him from nightmares. This fear followed him through childhood until he was 10, when he was assigned to give a small speech in front of his class. Poor young Alfie Solomons, so terrified of the 20 pairs of eyes that stared at him, that he threw up. He fled in tears away from the gasps and laughter, and back into the arms of his mother. There he wept profusely, embarrassed but mostly angry about how cowardly he thought of himself. His mother, hushing and consoling him, was broken-hearted at her son’s agony. Her only child. Her pride and joy. “Ahhh varóbushik. You know… it is not bad to be afraid… fear is not a sin my love.”
His eyes, ocean like in his tears looked up at his mother, “But I need to be brave. Like papa was.”
She smiled softly, “Mm yes papa was very brave. But you know… bravery isn’t the absence of fear… no it’s… it’s surviving even when you are afraid. It’s doing what you are afraid of even when you are scared. That is brave. You are brave every day my sweet Alfie.”
Alfie curled closer to his mother’s side, rocking and swaying with her as she continued to stroke his unruly hair, “Alfie, I have a trick for when I’m scared. I used it when I was leaving my home country.”
Alfie looked up, hopeful for a spell or a tool to keep him from fear, “What is it mama?”
“I let myself be afraid for 10 seconds. I count backwards from ten, and let my body feel the fear. And with every breath, and every number, and release that fear. By the time I get to 1, I am no longer afraid. I push through it. If you can manage to push through to 1 every time… I think you will find that you can do anything my darling boy.”
Alfie nodded, and resolved to always make it to 1. Even as a Captain in the war, right before the charge, as he saw the enemy approaching, he started the count. He always made it to 1, and always won.
But the counting wasn’t working now. In the car to Kahn’s and Sons Alfie couldn’t make it past 5 before his mind fled to you, wondering why hadn’t seen you in the crowd yet. Why he hadn’t heard your voice above the engine of the car yet. Why he hadn’t heard you call for him yet.
The sick in his stomach almost made its way out of his mouth when he saw what was left of Kahn’s and Sons. The emerald green wood of the front had been destroyed, leaving a festering and open wound. The windows of the above apartment had been blown out, and he could see and smell charred wall paper and clothing. Anything that could be salvaged was already, piled up in a pathetic little hill to the side. The fire department had long left, the police wouldn’t be there for another day, and the neighbors could only hold who Alfie assumed to be your family, as they wept.
“Mr. Solomons?”
Alfie turned swiftly, as if he was afraid to miss your phantom’s last moments on Earth. But you were there, solid. As solid as the ask caked to your face. He willed his arms to stay at his side, so as not to crush you in his arms, or embarrass you. Your eyes begged him to say something, to say anything. To make sense of this. The fire. His presence. Your position. But what was he to say? What role is he to play in this? Esther looked at Alfie curiously her reddened cheeks pursued together, “Are you sissy’s boss?”
A million words could’ve been dictated from the stare you gave him. They can’t know… not now. Not like this. Alfie just smiled softly at Esther, “No little bird, I’m just a neighbor. Your sister’s boss is has an office near mine. But I hear she is a very smart sister. Is that right?”
Esther giggled and nodded, proceeding to babble at Alfie, competing with him in amount of words that could fall out of the human mouth. You couldn’t help but stare at this scene. The smoke and horror seemed to wash away, and all you could see is Alfie and Esther. Esther finally smiling after a night of pain. Alfie chuckling and playing with a small child, speaking with Esther as an equal. Teaching her a clapping game and asking her questions about her favorite dolls. It felt too natural. Too sweet and real and too tangible. It felt as if it was a window to a life you could have and wanted so badly but will never have. It was too much. Your strangled inhale brings Alfie’s eyes to yours, but before he can say anything of comfort your fathers voice booms over, “Mr. Solomons! My daughters are of no concern of yours! What could you possibly take from us at this time? Have you no compassion? No human decency!”
Your father pushed between you and Alfie, a formidable blockade. Alfie mad no move, essentially chest to chest with your father, staring right into his eyes. “Shalom sir. Was checking if the rumors were true. It’s a shame.”
“It is a shame, now please leave. There is nothing more you could take from us. This city is over run with your like, killing and blowing each other up, and what about us hmm?? We take the shrapnel. We either pay your protection fees and starve with a slightly better chance at surviving the blowbacks? Or we save our money to feed our children, and still suffer the consequences of your war? Now Mr. Solomons what more can you take from us?”
It was no longer a question where you got your mouth from. Your father was old, but in his eyes you saw the anger and fire of his youth, of a man out through war. Alfie typically wouldn’t allow this, by anyone. But frankly, what little memories Alfie had of his own father, he saw in yours. And he couldn’t help but feel as though this fire was his fault. Maybe if he hadn’t fought with you yesterday, this fire wouldn’t have happened.
Alfie swallowed down any regret of the night before. The time was not for regret. The time was for solutions. And if Alfie wanted to be a part of the solution, he needed to speak to your father. As businessmen, “Mr. Abraham. I am sorry for your loss. Despite your reservations, you still live in Camden. And as a resident of Camden right? You live under Solomons protection. Now this right here? This is wrong. And I’m going to personally right, see to it that it is resolved.”
Your father began to bristle at this, “The police will do an investigation. We don’t need a gangster mucking about.”
Alfie chuckled, “You know the police won’t do a fucking thing about this. They don’t care about these sort of things they’re in everyone’s purse. Fuck, some of them are in mine.”
“I will not be indebted to another tyrant.”
Your free hand flew to your fathers shoulder, “Papa please… if you won’t allow a mitzvah… please just… just speak business with Mr. Solomons.”
Your father turned to you, “This is none of your concern! Please go to your mother immediately!”
But you stood your ground, “Mr. Solomons is offering you a solution papa! You are impeding a solution and the possibility help and a necessary alliance! And for what?! Pride?! Look at this! We have nothing! The shop is destroyed and we out home is burnt! What other solution could you possibly have?”
Your father just stared at you, mouth open, the emotions of the day washing over him. It was true. There was no other choice. And you were too old for him to be able to shield you from that reality. You clutched a shocked Esther closer to your side, “Papa… just… listen to what Mr. Solomons has to say… He is a business man. He can be reasonable, that’s what people say.”
Your father looked at you, and in that moment he saw you as you fully were. No longer that small child that sat with him until the late hours listening to him read. Not the little girl who cried about hurt birds who didn’t have a papa to take care of them. But a full woman. A whole woman with a firm mind and kind heart and strong temper. In an instant he felt the joy of watching his child, the mourning of losing his little girl, and the wonder of who you became seemingly overnight. He nodded, and turned back to Alfie, who was hiding his smile underneath an unkempt beard. Your father straightened and said, “Well Mr. Solomons. What are your proposed terms for such a partnership?”
Your father proved to be a shrewd businessman, nitpicking with Alfie over every detail in this partnership, which according to the terms would be reviewed every 6 months, with an option of either side to cancel the business relationship at those meetings. But Alfie knew he was never going to be the one to cancel it, as long as it kept him tied to you. You were the assigned scribe to the terms, which you fell easily into like walking. Mr. Solomons would provide housing to you and your family for the time it took to repair your family's home. The home was a block away from his office and home, providing easier access and protection for your family while an investigation was to take place. The investigation, Alfie insisted, would be conducted by his own men, and any policemen in his purse. Alfie insisted to your father that this was more for his own benefit than your father's, as it would solidify his position as the protector and the owner of Camden town. Your father acquiesed to Alfie's demand that the perpetrator would be dealt with in his own way, not involving the actual legal system.
Kahn's and Sons would be repaired and restocked through the use of Solomons men and contacts, which would be completed within in the next two months. Upon the finished construction, two men would be on guard of the shop during the day and night, reduced to one man upon the capture of the man who committed the act. Payment for the housing, rebuilding, and protection would be based on the services of Mr. Abraham and his family. Information obtained during client conversations, as well as tailoring and laundry services necessitated by the entirety of the Solomons Company. Services would be traded according to the going rate of Kahn and Sons prices. And upon the equitable exchange, Solomons laundry and tailoring services would then be discounted at a 45% rate. At the end of the negotiation, both men shook hands, both fighting to keep pleased looks off their faces and keep the air of solemnity and certainty and expectance.
As soon as their hands released, they nodded and gave Shalom, with your father giving directions to his own family, and Alfie barking orders to Ollie and his men. You stayed firmly planted next to Alfie, Esther being taken by your father. You looked at him quizically saying to him, "That is the most generous offer you have ever given in your life."
Alfie gruffed, "You hardly have standing to say that seeing as you only been working with me for 7 months."
"Am I still employed?"
"You better. Or else the entire office is going to shit. Ollie is moping. I can't read your handwriting. And you messed everything up in my office I can't find anything."
You smirked, "I told you, you need new glasses and your office was a pig pen. You should be thanking me profusely."
Alfie just grumbled. He would never admit that the way you spoke to him now made him feel better than he had in the past 12 hours. You allowed your fingers to brush his and the rings stacked on them, "Thank you Alfie.", you let out in a whisper, not looking at him.
He took a quick breath in at the contact, immediately craving more. But he bristled out instead, "For what?"
Your eyes remained planted at the dirt on your shoes, "For coming. For... checking in."
Alfie gently brushed his finger tips against the top of your hands, hanging by your sides, the closest he could get to holding your hands, "I had to. Now get over there, your mother keeps looking over Eli's shoulder. I'll meet you all where you'll be staying."
You nodded, cheeks and hands hot, "Yes Alfie. Shalom."
"Shalom Darling."
