Fandom Lesbophobia
No but the way fandom treats lesbianism, whether canon lesbian characters or characters headcanoned as lesbians, or ships involving lesbians(whether canon or fanon) is fucking whack.
Whenever a female character is canonically confirmed to be a lesbian, “fans” will always go the whole nine yards in trying to prove that the character is bi; they’ll always headcanon the character as bi and ship them with men. If you politely tell them that the character is a lesbian they’ll snap at you and call you biphobic or say there’s no proof of that or that “everyone can have their headcanons regardless” not when it’s actively erasing a canon sexuality being represented, ya dipshits. I can’t think of a single gay female character I’ve seen that hasn’t been called bi or even straight or had their sexuality dismissed by being shipped with men: Apple White, Tomoyo Daidouji, Robin Buckley, Amity Blight, Velma Dinkley, the list goes on and on.
Even when the character isn’t canonically a lesbian but is headcanoned as such people seem super against it and will be super bothered by it for some reason. Like they’ll always ask you “why” you hc the character as a lesbian and say “but she could be bi!” And yeah, she could, but what’s so wrong with me seeing her as a lesbian? Why not just make your own post about the character being bi? And then they’ll go on to derail your post by talking about how much they ship the female character with a man. Why are you so offended at the possibility of a female character not being attracted to men? Why do all women have to be available to men, even in fiction?
Imo people seem to hate lesbian headcanons the most, even compared to other headcanons. It’s as if a female character being unattracted to men completely intimidates them and/or is something they can’t comprehend, whether it’s canon or not. Just looking at the Encanto TikTok, when it comes to queer headcanons, fans on there seem to hate the lesbian Isabela one the most. And no, I’m not talking about Colombians who don’t want the message of the movie to be erased, I’m talking about people who simply don’t like the headcanon because they are homophobic/lesbophobic. Maybe it’s just me being an Isabela simp and looking at more content of Isabela and since I’m a lesbian the headcanon I tend to look at the most is Isabela being a lesbian as well(especially since I also have the headcanon myself), but I see it all the time, even more so than hatred for Mirabel being bi or Camilo being genderfluid even though the latter is possibly the most baseless.
Like I am so sick of people getting mad at others for headcanoning Isabela as a lesbian and using Bubo as an excuse even though his character is a rough draft and not canon. And it’s funny as well because most people don’t even like Bubo. Bring him up to an Encanto fan and they’ll instantly say they dislike him. But suddenly you want him to be with Isabela because it’s still better than Isabela being a lesbian. I even saw someone’s account receive death threats, attacks, and hatred just because they headcanoned Isabela as a lesbian, and it culminated in them taking down all their Isabela lesbian content and uploading an apology video instead, and all the comments were saying “it’s okay I forgive you now that you understand” WHAT?! So you only feel bad that she received hate because she no longer has the headcanon? It’s fine for her to receive death threats as long as she does have it though because she deserves it for thinking a fictional fucking female character isn’t attracted to men. Fucking sickening.
Don’t even get me started on how much more popular slash generally is compared to femslash. Because as we all know if a relationship doesn’t have men at its center then it’s not worth paying attention to and not to mention people will attack you for having the ship all the time as well. Even if it is canon don’t think that will stop fandom from tearing the ship apart and pairing one or both characters with boys. Alternatively very often slash pairers will only ship f/f ships to get them out of the way of their slash ship, and I’ve seen a lot of fics while looking for a femslash pair that I want that are tagged as such but only have that relationship in the background/as secondary. And the main and “foreground” ship is always an m/m ship every. single. time. This post goes into it in more detail so that I don’t have to, but the point is made that it’s so upsetting because this all directly stems from centering of men in society as well as fandom. idk it just frustrates me. And I wish this was acknowledged more.
TLDR: I’m tired, please just respect lesbian characters more in fiction and let people have their lesbian headcanons and ships, that is all. Lesbians deserve better.

in defense of cutler beckett
it’s kind of a tradition of mine to periodically write “in defense of” essays for unpopular characters (see “in defense of celegorm” and “in defense of bunny corcoran” lol), and idk what it says about me that i frequently feel the urge to advocate in favor of characters that are deemed unlikable/ unredeemable/ unworthy of attention by their respective fandoms, but i’m rolling with it lol. anyway, today, i want to focus on lord cutler beckett from pirates of the caribbean, because the general consensus about him on tumblr these days is… pretty abysmal lol, but i think he deserves a closer look. beckett seems to be the vast majority of people’s least favorite character, and not in an ironic way like some of the characters in POTC are treated online, like oh haha yeah barbossa was kinda annoying for going all ghost zombie mode on everyone but also we love him, weird eclectic uncle vibes, woo!.... no, everyone just straight-up hates beckett. and look: i get it, i really do. beckett is a much “realer” villain than davy jones or barbossa or salazar or any of the other POTC baddies, and that makes him much easier to hate. he’s not a giant octopus or a cursed skeleton or a slimy ghost guy with mystical powers, he’s literally just some guy– and he’s an asshole of a guy, because he’s basically just a random capitalist who wants all our favorite characters swinging from the gallows because they’re getting in the way of his trading schemes. and, if you count the price of freedom as canon, he’s also a slave trader, which is pretty unambiguously terrible. but despite all that, i actually like beckett. in fact, he’s one of my favorite characters in POTC: although it’s important to note that when i say that, i’m in no way saying that i condone his actions or that i think he’s morally good. as i see it, it’s totally valid to enjoy villainous characters while also acknowledging that they’re evil/problematic/whatever and that their actions are not morally acceptable in the real world. but the realm of POTC– where people (including the “good guys,” might i add!) are murdering and backstabbing each other left and right, any and all historical accuracy has to be taken with several grains of salt, and occult magic and sea goddesses and evil fish-men casually exist– is pretty far from “the real world” if you ask me lol. but anyway, let’s get into it then, shall we! (adding a read-more bc this is LONG oop)
beckett gets a really bad rap in the POTC fandom not just because he’s a ‘problematic’ character, but because on the surface, he comes across as a very one-dimensional, and therefore boring, villain. there are certainly other not-so-morally-pure characters in POTC that don’t seem to get the same treatment beckett does… no one really seems to talk about how pintel and ragetti threatened to r*pe elizabeth in the curse of the black pearl, for example. but pintel and ragetti are goofy comedic relief fan faves, and they’re also on the “good side” (aka the side of the pirates), so they have some redeeming qualities. in contrast, beckett is unique in POTC– a franchise famous for morally complex characters– for his seeming complete lack of redemptive nuance. he’s easy to understand as a villain because he’s just one of those villains who’s bad just ‘cause he can be. and he sucks! he’s ruthless, he’s power-hungry and materialistic, he plots against the pirates simply because they’re an inconvenience to him, and he represents the unjust authority which jack sparrow and the “good guys” stand against. the law permits beckett to freely exploit people in the name of the east india company, but does not allow jack and his companions even a chance of survival if they’re caught: and he knows how unfair this is, and doesn’t care. but here’s the thing: at its core, POTC is a pirate story told by pirates. of course we’re going to root for jack, will, elizabeth, and the gang over characters like beckett and norrington… because the pirates are the ones in control of the narrative. if we want, we can choose to believe them when they show us how much beckett sucks (and to be fair, they’re largely right lol), but it’s sort of boring, i feel, to just readily absorb the story that’s made most prominently visible to us and not bother to examine other perspectives.
so let’s talk about beckett’s motives. maybe he really is power-hungry and exploitative because he just is, and that’s all there is to him… but again, that’s what the pirates think, but it’s worth considering other possibilities too. what is beckett’s backstory, then– what, if anything, prompted him to go on his pirate-killing spree? well, in the movies, he doesn’t have one. he kinda just shows up one day and crashes will and elizabeth’s wedding as an obnoxious power flex, and from that point on, he’s just, like, there and he hates the pirates REALLY bad and wants to kill them all through any means possible, seemingly just because he can. the price of freedom, though, does give beckett a backstory. i’m not going to summarize the entire thing here, but in it, he and jack once worked together for the east india co. before eventually having a big mutual betrayal where jack wasn’t a fan of the fact that beckett was transporting some slaves, so he freed them all, which fucked beckett’s career over so beckett branded him as a pirate and then went on to become the asshole we see in the movies. but to be honest, this doesn’t really compel me all that much. it’s certainly an important moment for jack, but it explains away beckett’s motives the same vague way the movies do, aka by going “well, he’s just evil because he is/always was.”
what was really going on with beckett to force him through such a transformation had to have been much more than jack fucking up his job one time. the price of freedom tells us that he was a sickly kid not expected to live past childhood and that he was lowkey abused by his family, so i think a desire to prove his own worth was definitely part of it. but i don’t think beckett became evil (or doomed, for that matter) when he branded jack as a pirate. there’s a point in the book (if i’m remembering correctly) where young beckett gets captured by pirates and his dad refuses to pay the bail to have him released. it doesn’t explain how he eventually managed to escape, but i can only imagine that the experience left him with some internal damage… a fear of losing control, most likely, and of being out of his element. that’s kind of a lot for a teenager to take in… not only that his family doesn’t want him and he’s gonna have to fend for himself for the rest of his life, but that the world is cruel and unforgiving to vulnerable people, and the only way for him to survive is to seize all of the power and control he can and never let it go… because, if he doesn’t become the biggest fish, then a bigger fish is going to come along and that’ll be the end of him. beckett never manages to get rid of this fear of instability and vulnerability, which– especially after jack’s betrayal– manifests itself in a hatred of and desire to dominate (perhaps an attempt to conquer or mask a secret, intense fear of?) pirates and the occult. and of course, this eventually becomes his downfall, as he freezes the second he makes a mistake in at world’s end and is so unable to move beyond the loss of the upper hand that he literally just dies. beckett’s death is exactly what he deserves, but it’s also a remarkably devastating moment granted to a character who, up until this point, we’ve been guided to unreservedly hate and root against. in the grand scheme, it represents the fall of the old order, but for beckett himself, it’s his worst nightmare coming true– it’s the loss of control he’s been fighting this whole time and not realized was sneaking up on him till it was literally staring him in the face… and that’s tragic, and we’re meant to think so! we see his fatal flaw laid bare in a way that we would normally only expect the narrative to do so for its heroes, and it’s an incredible and shocking moment, being forced to briefly see things from the other side.
it’s hard for me to hate beckett as i watch him dying, and honestly it’s hard for me to hate him in general, because tbh i do resonate with him in some ways. obviously, his actions as a character are awful (and in particular, there’s no avoiding or diminishing the unequivocal evilness of the slave trading thing), and that’s what makes him a villain. but at the root of it all, i kinda just see a guy who’s sought to prove himself for so long that now he’s at the helm of this incredibly powerful and dangerous position that he cannot lose because he’s nothing without what he’s worked for, but even as he’s surrounded himself with people he can use as tools he has no one he can truly trust, so he projects this cold and calculating persona at all times because he has to, because it’s how he maintains control and he has to maintain control because without control he knows he’s already lost, but as tightly wound as he must be, he somehow manages not to break his composure even at the very end and goes down with his fucking ship in a moment that’s weirdly heroic… like. you don’t have to like beckett, but i do think he deserves respect. in a fandom full of wacky, fun, exciting characters, i know it’s not exactly intuitive to focus on the one decidedly un-supernatural, un-thrilling character… but in a story told by, about (and arguably for) pirates, beckett maybe rebels the most of all, by refusing, right down to his last moments, to succumb to a narrative that was never for him in the first place. and i think there’s something to be said about a character who-- villainous or not-- sticks by his principles till the end even as the very world around him bends to different rules, who doesn’t run from the law when it no longer benefits him but who acknowledges that he’s lost and owns it.

things i wish i could tell every young person on the internet (alternate title: an open letter to myself at 18)
- identity labels are an option, not a requirement, and they aren’t the only thing that define you.
- you’re also always allowed to change your mind about them, and you should never feel anything but proud of yourself for doing so.
- it’ll only do you harm to view your trauma(s) and mental illness(es) like immutable personality traits. you deserve to accept that things will get better.
- if you’re cishet, that’s okay! you don’t “have” to be queer to prove you’re not a bad or boring person.
- fiction does not equal reality, and fandom is a hobby, not a venue for activism.  “problematic” fanfiction has literally no effect on society, so don’t ever feel bad about enjoying what makes you happy!
- try, above all else, to be kind to yourself. you deserve it.

My #1 post of 2022
i’m not just a “villain apologist.” oh no no... when i say i like a villainous character, i not only mean that i fully support all of their evil actions and believe them to be totally justified and tremendously sexy, but also that i partake in the same evil actions irl and thoroughly enjoy it. “but you can’t like that character, they murdered someone!” yes, and? i murder at least one person a week for fun, what’s your point

Rules: Tag 10 people you want to get to know better! (I haven't had a chance to see who all has done this yet, so if you're seeing this consider yourself tagged in!
Favorite time of the year: Fall. Not that we get much of one, anymore. But I love halloween and when the days are warm and the nights are cool. I love fires and crunchy leaves and all that. Winter is too christmas and spring is too sneezy and summer is apparently living in Satan's buttcrack so...
Comfort foods:
My nana's tacos. My mom's chicken enchiladas. My own chicken paprikash over mashed potatoes. And my bestie's baked mushroom pork chops.
Do you collect anything?
Dogs, apparently. Briard stuff. I have held onto the most important pieces of XF mementos. A couple miss fisher things. I have a decent funko collection but it's packed away.
Favorite drink?
a fresh made margarita. frozen. with salt.
Favorite music artists:
My mom was a pro dancer so music of all kinds was around all the time. I don't have favorite artists. I don't really like concerts either, but I would pay to see Reba McEntire, Lady Gaga, Celine Dion and Dolly Parton (I *have* seen her, tho)
Current favorite songs:
We will consult the iTunes for this information. rom my Top 25 most played:
This is Me - The Greatest Showman
Everything is Everything - Lauryn Hill
I Am The Body Beautiful - Salt-N-Pepa
Walk On - U2 plus these recently PURCHASED songs
About Damn Time - Lizzo
Unstoppable - Sia
Champion - RuPaul

The saltdom is big? Is that salt among all fandoms or just specifically miraculous? Anyway it’s nice to see it go away whether it be from people moving on or just creating a self contained corner for themselves. It was really bad in 2019-2020 and season 4 inspired a lot of people salting on Marinette though I’m not sure if tumblr was exposed to that, it was mostly TikTok, instagram, YouTube, and twitter people who were the loudest advocates against her. For me I’ve gotten the impression that ever since risk and strikeback and the final lady our scene of them hugging the fandom has been far more positive. Also season 5 despite the angst is more positive as well.
Specifically Miraculous. There are other fandoms with similarly proportioned saltdoms, like the Harry Potter and Encanto fandom, but it's rare for most saltdoms to be this big proportionally to the main fandom.
Yeaaaah I didn't see as much of the salt towards Marinette during season 4 on like, tumblr and AO3. It existed, certainly, but even during that entire season the "Alya and Adrien and the class team up to beat up on Marinette, so Marinette moves away and gets them suspended or exposed for their horrific treatment of her or get thrown in juvie, something to ruin their lives as revenge" contingent was still bigger and more popular than the "Marinette screwed up and needs to apologize to her partner and promise to do better" contingent, at least on AO3.
I've seen a bit of the Marinette salt on Youtube, she's not well-liked on there, and REALLY not well-liked for her actions during season 4, which... okay, I think that she didn't treat Chat Noir very well during that season, either, to tell the truth (I particularly didn't like her plan to manipulate Chat Noir into revealing his identity to a third-party without his knowledge or consent in Ephemeral). That seems to have been the intention though, judging by her tearful apology at the end of Strike Back.
That did mostly die at the end of the season though, since Ladybug's back to treating Chat Noir like a partner more instead of just a subordinate, and hasn't gone behind his back or kept him out of the loop again, as of yet.
Here's the thing: most of the season 4 salt towards Ladybug was actually based off of stuff she'd done, and stuff that had hurt Chat, specifically. Most of the people who were upset at her for that wanted Chat Noir to be treated better, as opposed to wanting Ladybug to be punished, so once the season ended and Chat Noir was no longer being hurt and the relationship between them was somewhat mended, a lot of the salt subsided. The salt there was GENUINELY based off of the show and the characters in it, rather than just a desire for a revenge plot.
As such, it's not a surprise that people have been a lot more positive with season 5. Most of the saltdom who just cared about Marinette getting to tear down anyone who opposed her and be worshipped unconditionally didn't watch past season 3 and just operate in their own little salt world based on that, while the more salty Adrien fans who were upset about his treatment in season 4 (especially by Marnette) either left the fandom entirely after that season ended, without delving into endless vengeance AUs, or were mostly satisfied with Adrien being treated better NOW at least. (I'm in the latter camp. I'm a lot more charitable towards people hurting Adrien once they stop doing so and are unlikely to do so again).

OBBB (Oogie Boogie Bash Bruno) Facts
Because videos are coming out and we’re learning things about this precious bean. Also feel free to add more/link videos because I’m too lazy to go back and do it, sorry >.<
It’s his first time in California but Mirabel told him all about it (she’s been doing meet and greets for a while now and THIS IS SO STINKING CUTE).
He’s out of salt! (Please if you’re going do not give him salt, I’m guessing this is a Disney health and safety thing, same with the reason he’s not wearing flip flops. Why he doesn’t have Jorge’s spackle trowel while Mother Gothel is going around flashing a dagger is beyond me.).
He has 32 rats and usually feeds them empanadas or arepas con queso because of course. They do like candy too since there’s so much of it around.
What does he feed himself? Who knows, when asked what he had for dinner he want off about the rats. Someone get this man a handwich.
Once upon a time his mother asked him to clean the house, but he hates cleaning, so he came up with the character of Jorge - who doesn’t mind it - and cleaned all of Casita! “My Mama Alma was so proud!” :’)
He does hop over cracks!!
ETA: “ "Once you get out of the walls, pretty much anyone you meet becomes your best friend."  Bruno NO 😢

Some Less-Known Encanto Word of God
So I’m casually checking Encanto’s TV Tropes page because it’s always a good time, but then I got to Word of God and stumbled across this, uh, detail:
In this podcast, Jared Bush points out that due to the heartbreak and fear that Alma experienced at the riverside after seeing her husband murdered, once she learned of Bruno's powers, she would have found it impossible to resist pressuring him to frequently look into the future for threats and dangers to the Encanto. Thus, the observations that have been made about Bruno having a depressed attitude which led to him seeing bad futures is wrong. It's the opposite, pressure on Bruno to always look for the worst the future has to offer is what left him with a stressed, forlorn attitude. Sadly, Bruno is probably the first casualty of Alma's unresolved grief and fear.
Which. Um. Sure is some information!!! What, and I cannot stress this enough, the FUCK, Alma??? Like I can totally see and have read - and written! - fic where this happens but holy Christ on a crutch.

Religious Symbolism in Encanto
Most of these thoughts spawned from reading, a hair on the head of john the baptist by @icarusinthesand which I highly, highly, recommend you go read if you are at all interested in the more religious aspects of Encanto.
We ended up talking about the religious symbolism in the comments and with their permission I’ve compiled the main points we talked about here.
Tl;dr Encanto is chuck full of religious symbolism whether it was intentional or not.
Bruno’s Room
Religious parallels:
John the Baptist (And other prophets, thinking namely of Elijah) spent a significant amount of time living and preaching in the desert
The Temptation of Christ is when Satan tried to tempt Jesus to turn against God for 40 days in the desert
Moses and the Children of Israel in the desert for 40 years
A note about the number 40: In the Bible, numbers are rarely literal and have underlying significance. Forty shows up a lot because it is often used for time periods (40 days/years) that separate two distinct epochs. Bruno’s life can clearly be divided by the point he went into the walls, when he was 40. Plus, like I said the Hebrews were wandering in the desert for 40 years (To me this part of Bruno’s life can easily be described as ‘lost in the desert’)  which represents the time it takes for a new generation to arise.
Staying on Moses for a second, this wasn’t in the movie but a lot of us seem to share the same headcanon that Bruno’s sand waterfall parts for him, kind of like the Red Sea for Moses.
The concept art for Bruno’s room shows a lot of different options they considered but I would like to bring these two to your attention.
The first is a concept that I cannot for the life of my find again but I vaguely remember it being in a youtube video. Imagine a dimly lit, slightly crumbling, cathedral interior with sand dunes instead of a floor and that should give you a pretty good mental picture.
Tumblr media
The second concept (above) instantly reminded me of Petra (below) (World Heritage Site, very cool, has ties to a bunch of different cultures and religions including Christianity and Islam)

A little bit silly but for today's prompt of healing (and because I was hungry and talking about them anyway) I made arepas con queso.
Tumblr media
This is what I did adapted from the one found here
For the dough:
2.5 cups pre-cooked white corn flour (torti masa or masarepa for example)
2 cups warm water
4 Tablespoons softened butter
1 teaspoon salt (if you like your food salty put in an extra pinch or two)
2/3 cup shredded mozzarella
Optional filling: another cup (ish) of mozzarella
Thoroughly combine all the ingredients for the dough. Corn flour doesn't have any gluten so you don't need to kneed (ha!) But you do need the butter especially to be evenly distributed.
You should end up with a slightly sticky but sort of stiff dough (think play dough consistency) if it's too sticky add more flour, too dry add more water.
Let the dough rest for 5 minutes. This lets the corn flour hydrate.
Preheat a griddle or a skillet
Divide the dough into 8 equal balls.
Smush the balls flat, I just used my hands.
Optionally make a little cup with the flattened dough and put more cheese in, folding the cups edges over so you have an interior pocket of cheese.
Grease your cooking surface with butter and cook on each side for about 7 minutes.
(I am not Colombian and I don't claim to know what I'm doing. Everything I did was from Google and winging it)

My #1 post of 2022
Tumblr media
@madrigaljail I took some creative liberties but I thought you might like to see the hot topic ruana you described for your version of teenage disaster Bruno.
I did not bother to look at a reference picture so I'm sure this is not actually what a ruana looks like when not on a person but meh.

✂ A fandom that you feel isn't open and accepting?
Tumblr media
𝐎𝐎𝐂 — I try to avoid fandoms so I don't have a clear answer on which one is more open and accepting, it also depends on people's experiences. Some will say a fandom is welcoming and others will say the same fandom is awful.
But I noticed that some of the older fandoms are more welcoming than new ones, especially towards older muns like me. I had that fear when I turned 30 back then... now that I'm 37 years old, my fear came true, the worst case scenario is here. And I've been confronted to it when I stepped back to the roleplay communities earlier this year. Three months before I made this blog.
Back in 2015, I was 30... I've made friends of any generation on Tumblr and I didn't feel like I didn't belong as much as today. I didn't need to put minors DNI on my bio, everyone was welcome to interact with me... Today, it feels like history and I miss that. It's sad that the people who used to be minors, the same people who contributed to this community are now pushed aside because they have reached adulthood.
An adult has to have a boring life, paying taxes, working and bring money at home instead of being a fan and participate in cool activities online.
My experience with the Encanto fandom started on Discord, joined a few servers... minors are creepy … obviously, I wasn't welcomed... because I'm an adult, 99% of those Disney servers are filled with minors so don’t go lol, save your sanity. I moved to Twitter, where I tried Twitter RP... met a few adults .. but Wow, the incest, dramas over stupid shit !! Terrible mistake… I ran away lmao, there’s a lot of minors … too many and like on these discord servers, they are soooo disturbing wtf! At some point, someone literally told me because I'm an adult, I'm not welcomed in this fandom. Oh you bet I don’t want to be a part of this fandom bro! I just RP as the characters I love but avoid the fandoms most of the time. I had enough of fandom drama. And I'm sure most adult muns have experienced something similar. Oh it’s a kid’s show, so we don’t belong because we’re old lmao. I'm just glad Tumblr's been different for me so far. I hope it stays like this.

Fuck all of the trolls who drove @carlaerosie to suicide, seriously, she was such a darling but you people no no bounds. She was just a teen and yet she acted with more grace and maturity than most of the adults on here. Truly disappointing to see just how racist and sexist the Encanto fandom is. I don’t know what other way to say it but...ENCANTO IS NOT FOR YOU. If you’re white and queer/neurodivergent than this movie is not for you.
Isabela didn’t want to marry Mariano because she didn’t love him and because she was under pressure to be perfect, NOT because she was a lesbian.
Mirabel’s rainbow on her dress may resemble the bisexual flag and her voice actress may be openly bisexual, but it’s more so to represent the warm-colored family. NOT bisexuality.
Dolores squeaks because it’s a common trait of Colombian women when hearing or sharing gossip and was actually developed as a coping mechanism so that European colonizers wouldn’t know what they were saying, it is NOT a tic!
Luisa is NOT trans, women can be buff without having been assigned male at birth and this is obviously just a way for racist transphobes(the type who are too scared to say that they see trans women and Black/brown women as men) to come up with an excuse for her strength and buffness by deciding that she is buff because she’s “male” and thus masculinizing her.
Camilo shapeshifting and suffering an identity crisis is NOT because he’s genderfluid, he has only ever been referred to as a BOY, and this one annoys me the most because at this point I honestly feel like the obsession with him being “so gender uwu” is just a tactic to hide or deny the fact that he’s male because that is the main reason you fuckers chose to obsess over HIM over the female characters, so you project traditionally feminine or gender non-conforming traits onto him so as to ignore the positive messages the female characters--as the center of the story--send about femininity! Y’all don’t care that Luisa can be both strong and feminine or that Isabela learns to embrace her own form of femininity by the end of the movie rather than the typical “not like other girls” form of female revolution, and is the pretty character of the story while also being a dark-skinned indigenous woman. No, it’s more crucial to try to force the animators to admit that Camilo might be wearing eyeshadow. I would be laughing if it weren’t actually so damn sad.
Why am I saying all this? Because the minority of the fandom who gets it, particularly Latines and other people of color, have been saying it for ages, trying to call out the Encanto fandom on their blatant, blind-sided ignorance, but they didn’t listen. @carlaerosie was one of those people, and they decided that because she was fifteen they could talk down to her and take advantage of her! And what do you know, they took her life with this stupid bullshit. Why am I saying this on my main blog which is about Black women’s issues and not my Isabela Madrigal sideblog? Because the fandom racism, sexism, and misogynoir that is so present in this fandom is fucking gross and I am tired of it. You literally killed this young Afro-Colombian teenage girl because you couldn’t handle that this movie was not for yo pasty asses and because she had the ovaries to call you out on your blatant erasure and protect and defend her culture, so you decided she deserved to die. And it makes me sick. That’s why I won’t be associating myself with the fandom for now. I am truly just so repulsed and bothered and annoyed.
I don’t have anything to say...I just need someone to talk to. If anyone’s DMs are open, I would really appreciate that. If someone else needs to talk to me, that would be a pleasure, too.
But I don’t even know what to say now...just...yeah.
I’m lost rn.

Whenever I see posts about how Encanto fans want to see Dolores and Antonio wear more Black hairstyles in future works…okay first of all I feel utter euphoria how dare you…but second of all those posts always always ALWAYS leave out Camilo and it makes me both happy because Camilo is overrated and doesn’t need to be the center of everything and frustrated because it feels like they ignore or disbelieve the fact that Camilo is Afrolatino just like his siblings like…just because Camilo has light skin, looser curls, and green eyes doesn’t make him less Black than Dolores and Antonio, if they can wear cornrows he can too, but then again it’s the fact that he sports these features that make him more palatable to non-Black fans who want to ignore his Blackness so as to make him their Latin lover and sexualize and fetishize him, like let’s not pretend if he looked like Antonio he’d be anywhere near equally as popular, and it just makes me…grrr…it shouldn’t be so damn complicated confusing but it is.

If I had a nickel for every time an entitled Encanto fan was racist towards Latinos with the excuse that they were "being discriminated against" and had Isabela as their pfp I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice

looool imagine having a show that's done nothing with itself in the six years and four seasons it's been running. imagine having absolutely nothing changed in the status quo of your show in the six years and four seasons your show has been airing. imagine thinking of yourself as god's gift to animation and storytelling when your show has had zero plot advancement in the six years and four seasons. imagine patting yourself on the back for thinking you're as good as comic book legends despite the fact that you're basically a no one in the industry. imagine thinking you're such a hotshot and "criticizing" a 90 minute movie that has done more for itself and more for other people than your show has ever done for anyone.

AND FOR THAT MATTER since im on a roll about encanto now and cannot stop, WHY are some of yall simping so hard for a 15 year old boy? esp those of you who are adults? if you are 14-16 sure fine that’s different. but some of yall are out here acting like total and complete fools. Camilo is fifteen years old. Mirabel is fifteen years old. they don’t look twenty. they do not look twenty. stop being gross. no i wont apologize and i can’t believe i have to stake my claim on this hill but i’ll die on it if i have to
AND ANOTHER THING that i cannot stand is another whole group of you acting like certain things in encanto mean that some people in the Madrigal family are showing signs of tics/tourettes/mental illness. do i agree that most people in that family need therapy? there is no doubt about it tbh, but just because Bruno jumps over cracks, knocks on wood, or throws salt/sugar over his shoulders does not mean he has tourettes. i’m not even colombian/latina and i know that.
guys. if i, a white woman in her early twenties, can figure out that all of those things are done not just in colombia, but in other nations around the world, for superstitious purposes, so can you. it’s not that hard. i understand that some people really want to see more representation for those with autism, tourettes, and other mental illnesses, and i agree that they should be talked about more and introduced to children in an easy to follow format like a cartoon, but that’s not the case here. Superstitions are common in almost all cultures. please please please get that straightened out.
also listen to the colombian fans of encanto when they say this stuff! they’ve made tiktok videos and tumblr posts and as someone who’s always looking to understand/learn more about other cultures i find them really helpful!
(oh and also i dont know why everyone on AO3 is also so obsessed with de-aging/age regression for these characters. i have no idea what it is, don’t want to know, dont care. i just think it’s a weird trend. forgot to mention it in my last post but im not a fan of it LOL)

some thoughts about the encanto “fandom” more specifically to non pocs.
it’s very clear who it yt and who is poc when it comes to hcs and thats what makes some hcs frustrating. some hcs treat the things characters a seen doing as “not normal” things when its actually just common things we do in our culture.
A lot of the actions Bruno does (i.e knocking on wood) is because of his superstitions, and it’s normal for him to do this a lot because latino people take superstitions very seriously (I would know. Im half Mexican and watched my Mexican father be extremely superstitious for 9 years) Bruno throwing the salt and sugar is also a common thing? i’ve done the salt thing many times lol. and when he was jumping over the cracks he was saying a healing spell at the same time. all he’s ever heard from people is that he brings back luck so of course he is going to do things that “ward off” bad luck.
Camilo’s character description “doesn't quite know who he is yet” + his powers being shapeshifting does not mean he’s gender fluid (and trust me, i would love this representation and some hcs make me really happy to see BUT..). His shapeshifting makes sense when they also describe him as a “Theatre Kid” and he’s 15! Of course he’s trying to figure out who he is! And im sure her feels pressure with his Abuela (literally everyone feels pressure from her!) The day after Anontios ceremony, she says “we’ll find a way to make your gift useful” and im sure she said the same to Camilo with shapeshifting, because that is a tricky one to figure out.
(+ i’ve seen someone say Camilo snapping his finger was a stim. it is not. this a common gesture in colombia and I see many of my hispanic friends do it too. Dolores hm is also an expression.)
Isabela not marrying a man does not make her lesbian, she was obviously just isn’t interested in that man (and he wasn’t as in love with her either) and was going with it to make Abuela happy, which is important to know and understand. That showed how she was doing something she thought was “best” for her family rather than being with someone she actually loves. Her song is literally about how she “has” to be perfect. That is her character story. The pressure of everyone telling her how perfect and beautiful she is and being frustrated and scared because she doesn’t want to be perfect.
Grandparents in latino families are honestly.. well it’s always something new. I can’t stand to see the way some people speak about Abuela. I was very upset with her too, and yeah she was a bitch but can you blame her for reacting the way she did? She had to flee her home because of a war that was happening, watched her husband die, and was left to take care of three children. of course she took control of things. she was scared to lose her family and because of that fear it over took her sight with trying to make everything be perfect and not weak. after all, the magic was given to her family. any signs of weakness could have made her lose her family and home, something she fought for, that her husband died for.
also if Abuela didn’t care about Mirabel, how was she the one to find her? Abuela cares for all of her family, she just had a hard way of showing it because of everything she had been through.
it’s totally okay to hc characters how you want and find comfort in these characters but a big problem with people hc characters is the fact that they are erasing the actual meaning behind the movie. lgbtq+ representation is amazing, especially coming from a kids movie but that is not what encanto is about. encanto was for latin representation and people are making it to be lgbtq+ representation. if you are going to talk about these characters then you do need to understand a lot of the thing they do and say have actually meanings a cultural beliefs behind them.
apologies if none of this makes sense, it is 3 in the morning for me but :) im tired of seeing certain things under the encanto tag! don’t even wanna get started on the weird and creepy shipping and how people are drawing characters with a lighter skintone + smaller noses.. sigh.. pocs can never have something for themselves can we?
( edited + mirabels clothing was to show and represent her family!!! and you would know that if you actually gave this movie serious attention instead of projecting your own thoughts and feelings onto it! mirabels clothing and all the embroidery made me really happy and brought all of warmth to my heart because it reminds me so much of my family and the traditional clothing women still wear.
edited pt.2 + okay wow i was not expecting this to get big but it did so now im adding a few more words to this.
first of all if you took this as me saying “queer pocs do not exist!!” you are the problem and the people im talking about. obviously they do im not stupid. is that really your argument with this? go argue with the wall because im not gonna have it.
anyways what i was trying to say yes you can have these hcs but these hcs are overshadowing the actual story to this movie. this movie is representation for latino people and talks about a subject that is extremely hard for latino families to talk about or even just think about so you bet your ass we are going to get frustrated watching white people turn this movie into things that have nothing to do with the movie. that’s all these hcs are doing. ignoring the actual subject when we finally got something that talked about, represented it well and gave people comfort.
i’m honestly done speaking about it because whats there to talk about? clearly those who disagree aren’t listening to those who are frustrated and trying to understand. i’ll mute this now. thank you to the people who understand or stated they would take the time to understand.)
