I know I’m talking to an empty theater here but the writing on that episode of Lark Rise to Candleford where Robert loses his tools (and so the means to feed his family) and is facing destitution and then runs into the young guy who’s in love with his daughter and then uses the moment not to take out all his angst and anger on Fisher but to ask him if he’s ready for all that marriage and staying and giving up his life on the road actually means thus forcing Fisher to admit that he isn’t ready for it—-
!!!!!!!!
#and it’s just so brilliant because we’ve watched Robert suffer so deeply the entire episode#because of how crushing the weight of parental responsibility and poverty can be!!!#and he sees this guy that loves his daughter but has no understanding of the life that that love could and should and will lead him to#if he chooses to stay. this guy who’s just living in the moment and in the feelings of the moment but whose love is not strong enough#to endure the sacrifice that would be required of. well. ordinary married life in a small town!#and Robert uses all his wisdom to force him to admit that he’s not ready for it and doesn’t want it#and then it gets even more brilliant! because after Fisher leaves and Laura is heartbroken and angry#he presents her with the same reality/question but from HER side#her being like ‘how dare you make him not stay’ and Robert being like ‘and did I force you not to go with him?’#‘were YOU ready to give up your whole life and world for him? to make it work? or did you want your life AND him’#it’s the have your cake and eat it too truth in this case. their lives didn’t fit together and their love was real in a way#but not real enough to weld their different lives together without both of them hating each other in the end#idk it’s just BRILLIANT and I love it so much#because it unfolds so truthfully and all of the pieces of the story fold into each other so that it a) hits exactly as hard as it should#and b) reveals the truths of things so clearly and so accurately#Robert is so annoying so much of the time but he was a fatherly icon in this ep#lark rise to candleford

dont really see why more children is automatically better tbh. obviously being open to life is important but i see no inherent value in having many children that isnt teetering on the edge of utilitarianism and violating the personalistic norm.
#i am very glad to only have one sibling both because we are extremely close and because our childhood was spent caring for our elderly#grandfather and then our high school middle school years were spent dealing with my dad's health issues#i started babysitting my granddad when i was like eight. it would have been a nightmare to have to deal with multiple young children/babies#in the ensuing years because it just wouldn’t have worked for our family#and my parents didn’t actively plan to have two kids they didn’t like plan their family or whatever#but it just worked out that way and it was emphatically for the best#and everyone likes to bring up the ‘don’t not have another kid because you want a boat!!!!1!' point which like yes that’s correct#but there is a difference between wanting to live in luxury and not wanting to live in poverty. i think people should strive against#intentionally bringing children into poverty or having more children than they can afford to give a basically decent life#because it is unkind to a child to do so.#yes don’t have a boat instead of a kid. but where do these people draw the line? can’t afford to put your kids through catholic schools?#can’t afford to have savings in case someone is injured or ill?#can’t afford to keep Mom home to stay with the children?#bringing people into the world because you think their quantity will get you into heaven is selfish and it uses children as a means to an#end when they should be an expression of love only.

reason number 1829182773839291 why the American government sucks dick and balls:
if you're getting money from the government (disability, SSI, unemployment) there's a high chance they'll decide randomly that they "overpaid" you and that YOU have to pay THEM
For the first half of 2023 I was fighting tooth and nail to get my money back. They were underpaying me by a mile because they said I was working. I was not. I had barely any income, I couldn't eat, I couldn't get necessities, I was scared for my own health. Finally, around May of 2023, I got them to pay me my normal amount again.
Now, it's January 2024, and the same issue is happening. They're claiming I was overpaid in March of 2023 even though I was actually not paid at all. They didn't give me money for March whatsoever and they're saying they paid me the normal amount of money that most people on disability get.
These things aren't in place to help you, they're to keep you in one place and that place is poverty. I'm getting paid jack fuckall at my job and I'm getting my money taken away for something that never happened, but I can't get another job because then I'll lose my apartment due to how the subsidized housing system works.
It's never ending and I can't get out without a boost. I'm hoping that I'll be able to go off to college and work something out but who knows.

I hate that nwh successfully reinvested me in holland spidey at the very last second by giving him absolutely nothing. This will never be followed up on, because if there is ever a spidey4 he will have presumably gotten the hang of things in the gap, but i am predictably so so so obsessed with characters who have to build themselves out of ash, characters who exist without being "real", characters who have to grapple with logistics. Seeing home sewn spandex again was such a breath of air.

petition for the top 20 or so billionaires to be dropped on a remote island for a hunger games-style tournament in which their final ranking is the percentage of their net worth that will be donated to help fix global warming, ocean landfill, pollution, deforestation, poverty, affordable healthcare, etc.
even better if they can televise it for us common folk :)

It's September 3rd. 😢 In 2008, the Feeding America non-profit organization began the tradition of promoting September as Hunger Action Month to help raise awareness of the massive but totally curable worldwide hunger problem. For billions of people on our planet, a daily meal isn’t a choice between different dishes – it's a choice between food and other crucial needs like medicine, electricity, and childcare. Please participate in Hunger Action Month by taking action to eradicate it. Sharing, volunteering, pledging, fundraising, and donating are just a few ways to help end the impossible choices hunger forces upon people.
Hunger is a problem that exists in every corner of the world – from the least developed countries to the shining pinnacle of modernity in places like the UK, Canada, and Japan. In the US, hunger impacts every ethnic group, but especially Native Americans. Native Americans experience many unique challenges and are more likely to face hunger because of a long history of harmful federal policies that has led to high rates of poverty, crime, unemployment, and food insecurity. Prior to COVID, one in every four Native Americans struggled with hunger. Only one in four Native American communities lie within one mile of a supermarket. Feeding America is working with national organizations to meet the needs of all local communities, especially Minority communities.
Nobody should have to go hungry, and Hunger Action Month reminds us that there are many people out there who need the help of a kind soul with an open hand and that there are more than enough resources in the world for us all to eat well. Isn’t it time we all stood up and did something for the hungry on our planet? ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

I don't know if my life is just extremely charmed. but listening to my coworkers talk is so bizarre to me? the way that money is the only measure of success or good life that they care about blows my mind. we are talking about furthering our education and the only thing they are looking at is how much the salary for that field pays. I understand money is important, but that's honestly not something I've given even more than a passing thought to with the programs I'm applying for? I just don't get it? We do science, don't you care more about the work than the money? Am I just blind because I haven't ever had money troubles? I don't know.
#like one of them is a single mom with a teenager so I get you want money to support both of you and to send them to high school and college#but the other one is a single late 30's man with no kids or pets#why do you need a salary that high?#like.... half the time I think I'm basically rich? I am absolutely not lol#but money is definitely not something I worry about right now?#maybe during/after grad school that'll change but as it is I am very comfortable#I can't imagine that it would be much different for them? (with the exception of the kid obviously. two people need more money than one)#did living with my parents for one year after college really make that big of a difference?#idk I get I've never lived in poverty and I've never been in serious debt so money stress is something I haven't felt#but money has just never been that important to me?#as long as I can afford groceries and clothes and a home.... 🤷🏼 save up here and there for a little treat of some kind#I just don't get it. making 100k 500k six figures etc is so so so important to sooo many people (not just my coworkers)#and I'm over here wondering what the fuck you even do with that much money#what purpose does it serve. savings?#maybe I'm just showing my whole ass here and everyone will read this and be like 'please shut up you don't get it'#but money talk is everywhere at work and online and in the world#and I just thought we agreed there were other measures of success that were more important#I thought we all knew money mattered to be healthy and safe but that in the end didn't mean more#I thought idk people wanted jobs to support them but that mostly people went into things like science because they want to help the world#am I just a fucking idiot?
