If you’re not familiar with those rules, you don’t need to worry. Dungeons & Dragons is a game about letting your imagination run wild; it is a game that is played through conversation, is moderated by dice, and takes place in your cranial. As you adventure through the amazing land of Ooo, stuff will happen. There is a player, called the Dungeon Master, who will tell you about that stuff. 

As a brave adventurer, you will want to respond to your Dungeon Master with awesome heroic actions. Your character will have a set of attributes and some skills and powers that provide options for those reactions. But you can respond however a person could respond (if that person was a Wildberry Person, with an axe!). However you respond, you will tell the Dungeon Master what you want to do.

Once you choose your action, it’s time to get mathematical with it. You will roll a twenty-sided die and add a bonus number to it, based on the attribute (or skill or power) that is most applicable to the action. If the total number is high enough to equal or exceed a target set by the Dungeon Master, you will succeed, and the skill or power will dictate the results of that action.

And that's all there is to it! Imagine what the Dungeon Master tells you, have a conversation with the Dungeon Master about what you want to do, and roll a twenty-sided die to see if it works. Three simple steps to exploring (and loving!) the Land of Ooo.

"The studies are the first to experimentally test and prove hypotheses from the 1960s that equines make grazing land more suitable for bovines, a dynamic known as facilitation, Rubenstein said. Observations of zebras and wildebeests had suggested that the zebras’ ability to digest grass stems exposed the leafy grass wildebeests prefer.

Animals in the horse and cattle families both process food through fermentation as microbes in the digestive system break down vegetation. In horse-like animals, this process takes place in an organ located after the stomach that is similar to the human appendix (though humans are not fermenters). For bovines, on the other hand, fermentation happens in the rumen, an organ before the stomach that produces cud, which is regurgitated for the animal to further chew.

As a result of these digestive distinctions, Rubenstein said, equines can eat the rough low-quality grass that would linger and fester in a cow’s slower, more complex gut. The bovines in turn enjoy the lush, easily digestible grass underneath the stems.

Both Princeton studies showed that the presence of equines resulted in less dry-grass cover and a more nourishing diet for the cows. Although the study in Science matched cattle with other wildlife — including bovines such as buffalo — Odadi and his co-authors largely attributed the removal of the low-quality grass to zebras.

What was not expected was just how much the cattle can benefit, Rubenstein said.

'Scientists had this intuitively pleasing, circumstantial evidence that equines make the landscape more habitable to bovines, but the idea was never tested,' Rubenstein said. 'This was the first demonstration that the animals behave accordingly, but also that the performance of the cows as measured by growth is actually enhanced. Previous evidence of the effects we found on the health and development of cattle had been missing.'”

When Mozart took his chance at afterlife, accepting the offer of the mysterious gentleman standing at his deathbed, he had no idea he'll be incarnated as a vampire… much less as a catboy vampire. He blames it on his own strange antics during his former life.

Strangely enough, Mozart feels at home in his new body. After all, he's always had that catboy in himself. Back in the day, despite being a member of the elite society of his time, he couldn't help his bursts of quirkiness when bored, and could be seen leaping over tables and chairs… He hopes noone would remember him for that.

The first thing he does upon waking up in the 19th century in the mansion of Comte de Saint-Germain is to… look for a mirror. Not just to observe the curios new attributes of what once was a human body, but to groom himself. It comes so naturally to him that he cannot find peace until he's thoroughly taken care of himself.

The pristine white fur on his cat ears and tail is short, but much like his human hair, it tends to get a little wild unless groomed and kept in order. The first request he extends towards the master of the house is not for enhancements of the piano room, but rather for top-quality hairbrushes and toilette products.

It's such a burden, to be reborn with the intention to devote yet another lifetime to music yet to still face obstacles in the way. Not that he can complain much. Having a near-immortal form that needs less sleep is a delight, if the price he has to pay is distracting himself for a portion of rouge every now and then, then so be it. But god, his catboy genes. They're a gift and a curse.

For one, he finds it harder to fight boredom. Which is funny because that's exactly how this side of himself manifested back in the day, when he reached his relatively low threshold of boredom.

Much like how cats need constant entertainment, Mozart needs something besides music in order for his brain to produce dopamine. He's never been the kind to move around much, and would prefer it if he never has to leave the mansion at all. Especially not via carriage. He claws at the carriage doors when someone tries to put him in one.

But catboy Mozart gets the zoomies every now and then, and he can't do anything about it. It often happens at night. It starts with the strange urge to trash his hand along the row of piano keys, pressing them in a random, chaotic order, creating a godawful cacophony of noises.

It feels good to do that. He has no explanation for it. It'd normally feel like nails on a chalkboard for him, yet bringing disorder after hours and hours of precise work feels so refreshing to him.

Then he exits the piano room to exhaust his pent-up energy elsewhere. He runs in the halls. Jumps over the long dining table and various other pieces of furniture. Thank god everyone else is fast asleep. Or are they?

He's a clean freak, so he cleans after himself. It's just a part of his routine at this point. He feels equal parts of satisfaction wreaking havoc and then bringing order afterwards.

As for the positive aspects of having this new form, Mozart is astonished to find his hearing greatly enhanced. He hears everything. It's all a musician like him can ask for.

You know how Mozart becomes chatty and giggly when he's drunk? It's only worse if we're talking about a drunk catboy Mozart.

He meows at people. Loudly. You can't have a normal conversation with him; to every question, he'll tilt his head with a curious "miau". The others are forced to meow back in some dire attempt to communicate with him to get down from the chandelier.

Upon the arrival of MC in the mansion, Mozart doesn't play around showing his "beast" side to her, being more than sure that she won't be able to put up with him. Her futile efforts at making friends with him are laughable and she needs to know exactly who she's trying to domesticate. He warns her about getting her face clawed at if she enters his room at the wrong time.

Despite the bumpy start, she naturally doesn't give up trying to get closer to him… until her patience and genuine care pass the test of time and acquaintanceship blooms into love.

Mozart becomes more willing to be himself infront of her, and in turn, MC helps him out by keeping him company when he gets the zoomies. She practically plays with him, makes sure he's not breaking any expensive mansion relics, chases after him and gets chased by him…

MC notices how important is for Mozart to be well-groomed, and begins to frequently brush his hair and cat ears for him.

The first time Mozart's tongue swaps across her cheek, it's shocking for both parties. For Mozart because he didn't even realize he's doing it, and for MC because it hits her what a special brand of affection this equals to.

MC gifts him a collar with a little bell on it, a very elegant one. She knows Mozart's love for certain noises, and he truly falls inlove with it - though he makes it clear that he'll only wear it in front of her. He might be a catboy but he's a catboy with dignity.

So i was looking at your edits again and it got me thinking, what if instead of their yandere behaviors being brought forth naturally, what if instead it was a perisat, this would explain their sudden change in behavior. The reason why it hasn't been detected as a disease among humans is because it's a parasite that only attaches itself to animal brains. But due to the demon's obscure nature of being an assortment of a bunch of deaforent creatchurs the parasite has made its home in them, however due to their human-like intellect they don't get fully taken over by it. On the other hand it enhances their primal senses and feelings toward those they really care about which results in them acting out on their instincts more often.

Usoly the animal that has been infected by the parasite would act violently, biting whatever other living thing in its vicinity. It's the parasitic way of trying to duplicate itself and infiltrate other animals, but because it was only meant for animals it can't fully take over the human mind. But what it does do is leave behind some interesting… side effects ~

Traditionally when it's time to “duplicate” the host produces more saliva in preparation for the transmission from one vessel to another. But as stated earlier it can't do that with humans and or lack of animal attributes, however when our lovely demons and demonesses realize how the saliva affects you they use it to their advantage.

When the Scorpion queen kisses you your mouth will start to feel numb, for a while you won't be able to taste and or feel anything with it, except her. The feeling of feeling nothing but her is addicting and when she's parted from you you will be craving more, more, more

Jin & Yin are like living energy drinks, they make you energetic and jittery along with leaving you with a smal portion of their adoration towards you. And if you kiss them long enough you'll eventually experience something akin to a sugar crash, making you slump in their arms unable to move from exhaustion.

Sun's frequent consumption of peaches has affected the way he tastes, he gives off the feeling of bliss and lightheadedness with his kisses. It's hard to leave him when your halfway passed out, not to mention the strange aroma you smell, it's so soothing ~

Okay but consider: ASTRONOMY LESBIANS

This specific post is going to be me gushing over the astronomy potential Touka and Nemu have with each other and why it makes me feral, it's more me pointing out some things than any actual analysis. Still, here you go, have fun!

So, this is the thesis: Touka is the sun/day and Nemu is the moon/night.

First of all, night and day are intrinsically connected. The sun's light gives the moon its glow during the night and the moon remains present and visible during the day, if a little harder to see in the full light of the sun. The former sounds an awful lot like how Touka gave Nemu visibility to the general public through the website for her books and continues to do so on the regular, dutifully, and the latter is to me the same effect as any scene they're in together; everyone in-universe and outside of it always pays more attention to Touka, because she's the more boisterous one, louder, etc. The radiant sun, too bright to ignore compared to the soft glow of the moon.

Now, I love the moon's effect on the oceans on Earth. Its control over the tides is due to its gravity being strong enough that the tide is pulled slightly closer to it. If you look at when the tides are highest, you'll see that tides are always highest when the moon is directly overhead, but there's also another high tide on the opposite side of the planet. If you mapped it out, you'd get this oval shape of the tides, where a "tip" of the oval is always pointing at the moon. Well guess what, the SUN also does this! It's just less noticeable, but it's why low tide doesn't always happen when you think it would. And since they both do this, their effects can be combined! This is why the highest of tides always occur around full and new moons, with the effects being even stronger during lunar eclipses, and with solar eclipses being the strongest of them all, which probably added to the effect of ancient civilizations freaking out during them cause the tide was so high, it just added to the chaos of the sun being blocked out too. Tides are highest about the full and new moons because that is when the moon and the sun are lined up. Gee doesn't that sound familiar and like it could apply to a certain pair of idiots who work really well together (as per Ui's words).

Together, the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun affect the Earth’s tides on a monthly basis. When the sun, moon, and Earth are in alignment (at the time of the new or full moon), the solar tide has an additive effect on the lunar tide, creating extra-high high tides, and very low, low tides — both commonly called spring tides. One week later, when the sun and moon are at right angles to each other, the solar tide partially cancels out the lunar tide and produces moderate tides known as neap tides.

And as a fun extra:

Once a month, at perigee, when the moon is closest to the Earth, tide-generating forces are higher than usual, producing above average ranges in the tides. About two weeks later, at apogee, when the moon is farthest from the Earth, the lunar tide-raising force is smaller, and the tidal ranges are less than average. When the Earth is closest to the sun (perihelion), around January 2 of the calendar year, tidal ranges are enhanced. At aphelion, when the Earth is furthest from the sun, around July 2, tidal ranges are reduced

So like. I don't think I need to point out the moon's distance from the sun and its effects here. Now let me go to something else: Touka and Nemu have a dual unit, the attribute of which is darkness. Here's a tidbit about it that I yoinked from another post:

Your pupils contract in response to visible light, but not all of the sun’s light is visible. During an eclipse, your pupils widen because it’s dark, but there’s an outer layer around the sun that mostly only puts out light that’s not visible to us, but that can still damage your retinas. Thus, looking at an eclipse makes your pupils open up like it’s dark, which lets more of the invisible damage beams in. The sun doesn’t get a critical multiplier on its damage when HP is low. Equipping the moon gives the sun a bonus to backstab.

And then I pointed out the dual unit and its attribute, like an eclipse. Such an apt metaphor. Now, this isn't all, though the astronomy rant is far less connected and organized than the other more essay-ish posts, but I just wanted to cover at least some of the bond things before I yell about why each of them fits their assigned astral body/time so well. Actually... Let's consider the solar wind for a second.

So, for those with less astronomy knowledge, here are the basics. The sun releases a continuous outflow of particles and radiation that we call the solar wind. The solar wind washes over the planets, moons and other bodies in our solar system, and every object, planet or person traveling through space has to contend with this. Our moon in particular has the scars (or bad tan) to prove it. Ever wondered what gives the moon that distinctive pattern of darker and lighter swirls? That would be the sun over there. Or, well, research suggests that the solar wind and the moon’s crustal magnetic fields (bubbles of "sunscreen") work together to give that pattern. See, here on Earth, we’re largely protected from the damaging effects of the solar wind, because it's magnetized, therefore Earth’s natural magnetic field deflects the solar wind particles around our planet so that only a small fraction of them reach our planet’s atmosphere. The moon however has no global magnetic field. It's magnetized rocks near the lunar surface that create those small, localized spots of magnetic field that I referred to as "bubbles of sunscreen" up there, because they kinda are acting like sunscreen by deflecting solar wind particles on a much smaller scale than Earth’s magnetic field. The surface of the moon isn't really made of "just rock" (it's called regolith, actually), and so as those particles flow toward the moon, they are deflected to the areas just around the magnetic bubbles, where chemical reactions with the regolith darken the surface. And there is Something To Be Said about this, something intimate about it... Something something accepting every part of someone else, something something being permanently marked and irreversibly changed by another (I've called them twin flames before)...

Here are some points to consider, particularly for Nemu:

They spend more time under the light of day (Touka, early riser, "rise with the sun" is very likely literal for her since she gets up long enough before school time to have more than enough time to do Things as per her quotes) vs awake at night (Nemu habitually staying up late to read and write, we have many lines about it particularly from the quotes, and a visual from the anime).

Nemu has been depicted dramatically in front of the moon twice, once in her intro in Arc 1 Chapter 7 and once in the anime, I believe final season's first episode? The flashback, right after they put Ui in Mokyu and have the whole exchange about it on the roof of the hospital.

In relation to the phases of the moon: as the moon goes around the Earth, different parts of it are illuminated by the sun, and we see a different amount of light reflected back at us, and I have decided that relates to how Nemu adapts seamlessly to whatever Touka's mood is because she just knows her that well (gestures vaguely at that sunset scene in Touka's MGS or any of the other times when Nemu knows it's not the right time to take a jab at Touka and so on and so forth), but honestly there's a huge number of gay interpretations of it. AND it's accurate to the way Nemu acts as a Magius, kind of, when it comes to the Feathers at least. People normally remember her as the Magius who was kindest to the Feathers (full moon, brightest guiding light), but she was also the one doing the brainwashing, giving the massacre orders, and delighting over her suggestion of using the Feathers as a shield (new moon, known as the dark side).

Feelings of being neglected/ignored/not noticed by passersby or people around her could be related to how the new moon is, literally Not Visible™️ to the naked eye except when it is silhouetted against the sun during a solar eclipse (COUGH). Plus, you could argue the fact that people love Nemu most when she's giving them something (light, full moon).

In terms of giving, let's hop over to Touka for a second:

The sun is constantly giving off energy. Light, heat, life. It's quite impossible to forget the sun is there, unlike the moon (or well it's more like you always sort of actively notice the sun, but not the moon due to its subtler presence). Aligns pretty well with Touka's.......... everything. Including the compulsion to take center stage. There is nothing else in the sky besides the sun during the day, it is alone in the heavens save for the subtle presence of the moon, which nobody else notices.

Then there's this post which I will quote here:

Big fan of sun motifs in characters not necessarily being about positivity and happiness and how they're so "bright and warm" but instead being about fucking brutal they are. Radiant. A FORCE of nature that will turn you to ash. That warmth that burns so hot it feels like ice. Piercing yellow and red and white. A character being a Sun because you cannot challenge a Sun without burning alive or taking everything down with them if victorious.

ALIGNS PRETTY WELL WITH TOUKA DOESN'T IT. Almost a little bit too literal in some senses! Being bright and warm does apply to her as well, mind you, she's bright in the intelligent sense and to some extent the temperament sense (though she is a lot less bright than she pretends to be with the very eerie cheerful mask she likes to wear), and she's warm and nurturing towards the people she cares about. Speaking of warm and nurturing, the sunlight makes plants grow, Nemu is a forest attribute in-game and has forest magic, nurtured by the fire of the sun (Touka, a flame attribute magical girl with the corresponding fire magic).

I've compared these two to binary stars in a fic before, but I really love their sun/day and moon/night possibilities! You can even interpret a few things like this:

Under a scorching sun, you are blinded, and in deserts caused by its rays you are likely to experience hallucinations, mirages. I can relate this to Touka's mask-wearing habits, for example. The sun is unyielding and you will never escape its effects completely no matter how hard you try. It's what allows life to exist and simultaneously also a force of destruction, much like fire itself. I could go on a related rant about how TouNemu's attributes really really fit them- I will stop myself before I do however.

Back to Nemu's side of things again. The night is often considered the most dangerous time of day pretty much everywhere around the world, but that's not quite right. It's because the night is obscured in darkness, quiet, secretive. You cannot know the night. It's fully possible that something will jump out at you at any point (assuming you're out and about), and you can never be 100% sure that nothing will. You have a higher chance of slipping, and good god if you've ever been outside in bumfuck nowhere with no lights around in the mountains or something on a new moon, you know very well how difficult navigation becomes without the moon's guidance

But, the night, especially in the East, is often considered shelter as well (from what I've gathered). The quietness aspect is retained over there, but it's seen in a more positive light, and the different attributes of the nighttime are more appreciated and respected compared to the West, in my experience digging into stuff at least. The night can easily be what soothes people after enduring the flames of the day. Whether literally because of the heat or just because for most people, daytime is work time, it's Getting Things Done time. Nighttime has always been more… for the self, to relax and to think. More intimate. Humans don't really work according to nature these days, but pieces of it are still present in how the night remains much quieter than the day, in how a teenager might feel safer, more raw and more connected with their true self in the dead of night on their phone under the covers than at any other time of the day, etc. It's a time of rest for a majority of living beings. Slower and less hectic than the daytime.

"What about those who are up at ungodly hours of the night still having hours-long conversations?" That's meaningful. It's necessary for the human mind, for our hearts. That's rest. It constitutes a "shelter" for the people in question. Those convos I'd bet are not about work or about stressors in their lives, but rather about things they find genuinely interesting and/or things they love. Or, alternatively, venting, yes, but even that counts as "unwinding" and reaching something closer to peace.

There's also something to be said about how Touka relies on Nemu so often (she says as much in her regular Tap 8 quote), and looks to her for guidance like the sailors of old looked up at the night sky for directions. Nemu is drawn to Touka like the moon is affected by the sun's gravity, and Touka loves her and studies her (she REALLY pays attention to Nemu, as I've pointed out before) like humans have always studied and observed the night sky.

AND also Touka = lantern, light. Nemu = sleep. Just saying.

The Loreirrans - regional appearance and subspecies

it is time that i finally make a big post about my original alien species, the Loreirrans! keep in mind that i have been world-building about them for about 5 years now, so i have so much information about them that i'll need to post in sections. This post will focus on the diverse appearances the Loreirrans take and a couple of the subspecies that exist.

General Physical Appearance

Appearance of the Loreirrans

The Loreirrans are a captivating and ancient species, distinguished by their unique physical characteristics. These highly intelligent, bipedal humanoids possess a striking appearance, and their attributes vary depending on their age, environment, and reproductive state.

Height and Physique: Loreirrans exhibit a remarkable range in height, typically standing between 8 to 12 feet tall. In rare instances, some Loreirrans can grow even taller, reaching heights of 15 feet or more. Their body types, from slender to robust, are influenced by the environmental conditions of their habitat, and their fur varies from short peach fuzz to long and lush, offering insulation and camouflage.

Coloration: The coloration of Loreirrans is predominantly dark, serving as effective natural camouflage. However, their bodies are adorned with vibrant neon patches that appear on their joints, backs, and the undersides of their feet and hands. These bright accents contrast beautifully with their dark base color and are influenced by their specific environment.

Limbs and Digits: Loreirrans possess five fingers on each hand and two toes on each foot, except for those residing in the swamp and jungle regions, who boast a unique third toe, functioning like a dew claw. Their hands and feet are highly dexterous, facilitating complex tasks.

Sensory Adaptations: Intriguingly, Loreirrans lack visible ears and noses. Instead, they rely on sensory input from small openings located behind their jawlines for auditory perception. They have sharp front teeth reminiscent of canines, and their back teeth are adapted for grinding. A retractable tongue, capable of extending up to 3 feet, aids in various tasks.

Sensory Organs: Loreirrans possess unique sensory adaptations. They lack conventional eyes but perceive the world through infrared and electromagnetic fields, providing them with a distinct and comprehensive view of their surroundings. Adults boast sensory organs on their backs and shoulders, visible as neon-colored patches, which enhance their perception further.

Metamorphosis and Reproduction: Loreirrans undergo a metamorphosis-like transition from youth to adulthood. Prepubescent and young Loreirrans lack certain adult traits, including the neon patches, extra arms, antennae, and a spiny ridge extending from head to tail, lacking a tail as well. Young Loreirrans have a more humanoid appearance with four antennae. Upon completing this transformation, Loreirrans are considered adults, achieving sexual maturity and the potential to produce offspring. Most Loreirrans are hermaphrodites, capable of both male and female reproduction, although exceptions exist with distinct male or female sexes.

Regional Appearances

Appearance of Tundra Regional Loreirrans (Tundrans)

Fur and Palms: Tundra regional Loreirrans, affectionately known as Tundrans, exhibit distinctive physical traits uniquely adapted to their frigid environment. Their fur is notably thick, covering their entire body in a pristine white coat. While their body fur is plush and soft, their palms boast a shorter but denser fur, providing extra insulation against the cold. This specialized fur texture ensures warmth and comfort in the harsh tundra conditions.

Antennae: The Tundrans' antennae are shorter than those of Loreirrans from other regions, and they share the same fur texture as their palms. These shorter antennae are perfectly suited to their environment and contribute to their streamlined appearance.

Size: Tundrans are comparatively smaller in stature, standing at an average height of 7 to 8 feet tall. This smaller size allows them to navigate their icy surroundings with agility and efficiency.

Color Variations: While Tundrans predominantly sport a pristine white fur coat, some individuals may exhibit patches of alternative colors, such as browns or grays. However, it's important to note that Tundrans never possess bright neon colors on their fur. Instead, their dark and neon colorations are concealed beneath their fur, remaining unseen unless a Tundran undergoes shaving.

Appearance of Water Regional Loreirrans (Watorrians)

Skin and Gills: Watorrians are uniquely adapted to their aquatic habitat, featuring smooth, water-resistant skin that allows for effortless gliding through the water. Distinctively, they possess three rows of gills situated beneath their jawline. These gills play a crucial role in respiration and appear to connect to their infrared sensing organs, granting them unparalleled underwater perception.

Webbed Adaptations: Watorrians are streamlined swimmers, thanks to their extensive webbing. This webbing extends across various parts of their bodies, facilitating swift and graceful movement in the aquatic realm. Notably, their fingers, toes, antennae base, and tail base are adorned with webbed structures, optimizing their hydrodynamic efficiency.

Spiny Ridge and Sensory Fins: The spiny ridge of Watorrians is elongated and exceptionally smooth, contributing to their streamlined form. Along the bottom of their tail and stomach, they possess small sensory fins that serve as sensitive detectors, allowing them to perceive even the slightest changes in water conditions, such as sudden movements or currents.

Colorations: Watorrians exhibit a color palette that leans toward shades of blues and greens, mirroring the hues of their underwater world. However, some individuals may display variations in color, including purples and reds. These colorations add to their visual diversity and blend harmoniously with their aquatic surroundings.

Size: Standing at a height of 8 to 9 feet when on land, Watorrians are equally formidable underwater, where their total length, from head to tail, spans an impressive 18 to 20 feet. These dimensions are finely tuned for their adept navigation and survival in the water.

Appearance of Desert Regional Loreirrans (Desertorrians)

Plentiful Representatives: Among all regional Loreirrans, Desertorrians are the most abundant and serve as the primary physical representation of the Loreirran species.

Fur and Coverage: Desertorrians possess a distinct covering of thin peach fuzz that envelops their entire body, with notable exceptions. This fine fur provides insulation and protection from the desert environment. Notably, their spiny ridge, the soles of their feet, and the palms of their hands remain devoid of fur.

Cranial Features: One distinguishing feature of Desertorrians is the slight elongation of the back of their heads compared to Loreirrans from other regions. This subtle cranial adaptation is a hallmark of their regional identity.

Size and Stature: Desertorrians stand as the largest of all Loreirrans, with heights ranging from an impressive 10 to 12 feet. Their imposing stature reflects their adaptability and resilience in the challenging desert landscape.

Coloration Variations: The coloration of Desertorrians typically leans towards darker shades, aligning with the arid, sun-soaked environment they call home. However, rare instances reveal Desertorrians adorned in warm pastel hues or even completely black, showcasing the intriguing diversity within their regional population.

Appearance of Forest Regional Loreirrans (Forestorrians)

Size and Stature: Forestorrians, as inhabitants of the lush forest region, are slightly smaller in stature compared to the Desertorrians. They typically stand at heights ranging from 10 to 11 feet, making them imposing yet agile within the forest canopy.

Coloration Palette: One of the most distinctive features of Forestorrians is their neon coloration, which leans heavily towards earthy and natural tones. These hues include varying shades of greens, browns, and blues, perfectly suited for blending into their forest environment.

Prehensile Tails: Unlike Loreirrans from other regions, Forestorrians boast prehensile tails that are notably thinner at the base. This unique adaptation allows them to grasp and manipulate objects with precision, aiding in their arboreal lifestyle.

Distinct Regional Similarities: Surglans, the inhabitants of both the Swamp and Jungle regions, share a strikingly similar appearance. They stand out as the least abundant among all regional Loreirrans.

Spiny Ridges and Antennae: One of the defining features of Surglans is their elongated spiny ridges, which extend along their backs, providing them with a unique and striking appearance. Additionally, Surglans have longer antennae compared to other regional Loreirrans, enhancing their sensory perception in their lush and vibrant environments.

Coloration Spectrum: Surglans exhibit an impressive array of colorations that mirror the vibrant hues of the swamp and jungle ecosystems. These colors include varying shades of reds, oranges, yellows, greens, and on occasion, blues. This diverse palette helps them blend seamlessly into their surroundings and offers a stunning display of regional diversity.

Claws/Talons and Third Toe: Surglans possess longer and thicker claws or talons, granting them superior dexterity when navigating the dense undergrowth and moist terrain of their regions. What sets them apart further is the presence of a third toe, which resembles a dew claw. This additional appendage enhances their agility and grip, making Surglans adept climbers and hunters in their challenging environments.

Size and Stature: Surglans typically range from 9 to 10 feet in height, reflecting their adaptability to the dynamic and intricate landscapes of the Swamp and Jungle regions.

Physical Characteristics: Off-planet Loreirrans display a set of distinct physical traits that set them apart from their counterparts on Icera-5. These differences are primarily adaptations to their environment in outer space.

Stature and Size: Off-planet Loreirrans are notably shorter in height, typically ranging from 5 to 6 feet tall. This diminutive stature is a result of their adaptation to living in environments with weaker gravity compared to their home-world.

Coloration: Their coloration differs significantly from their terrestrial counterparts. Off-planet Loreirrans are lighter in color, reflecting the muted tones of their artificial habitats in space.

Antennae: In contrast to the longer antennae seen in Loreirrans on Icera-5, Off-planet Loreirrans have shorter antennae. This adaptation likely aids in maneuvering within the confines of their space stations and artificial planets.

Body Patterns: The body patterns of Off-planet Loreirrans are limited to complex stripes and spots. These patterns may serve as a form of camouflage within the artificial structures of their space habitats.

Environment and Lifestyle: Off-planet Loreirrans call space stations and artificial planets their home. They inhabit environments with weaker gravity compared to Icera-5. This unique habitat has led to specific adaptations that enable them to thrive in space.

Life Span and Development: Despite their adaptations, Off-planet Loreirrans tend to have shorter life spans compared to their counterparts on Icera-5. Their bodies are adapted for faster development during childhood, likely as an advantage in the confined and resource-limited space environments they inhabit.

Mixed ancestory

Compatibility and Rarity: It is exceptionally rare for any species to be compatible with Loreirrans, and this subspecies represents a fascinating exception. They share a unique ancestral connection with a species that has been extinct for centuries, leaving behind only mixed Loreirrans and a rich cultural legacy.

Distinct Characteristics: These unique Loreirrans do not undergo the customary second metamorphosis that other Loreirrans experience. As a result, their physical characteristics are distinct and reflective of their ancestral lineage.

Stature and Size: Loreirrans with extinct ancestry typically stand at heights ranging from 7 to 8 feet. This falls within the range of their Loreirran counterparts, allowing them to somewhat blend within Loreirran communities.

Feathered Appearance: One of the most striking features of this subspecies is their feathered appearance. They are covered in small feathers that adorn their entire body. These feathers give them a unique and childlike appearance, setting them apart from typical Loreirrans.

Tail Feathers: These unique Loreirrans possess tail feathers, although they are functionally useless. These feathers are a vestige of their ancestral heritage and contribute to their distinctive appearance.

Non-Shape Shifting: Unlike some Loreirrans, this subspecies does not possess the ability to shape-shift. Their physical form remains consistent throughout their lives.

Ancient Loreirrans

Distinctive Characteristics: The first Loreirrans, in ancient times, bore a striking contrast to their modern counterparts. Their physical attributes were distinct and set them apart in Loreirran history.

Physical Features:

Eyes: Unlike the contemporary Loreirrans who lack visible eyes, the ancient Loreirrans possessed eyes, allowing them to perceive the world visually.

Limbs: They had two arms, which was different from the current Loreirrans with four arms.

Fur Resembling Hair: Their heads were adorned with fur that closely resembled the appearance of hair, another departure from the modern Loreirrans.

Nose Similar to Earth Bunnies: Their noses bore a striking resemblance to the noses of Earth bunnies, providing a unique feature in their appearance.

Antennae: While they retained the characteristic antennae of Loreirrans, they had only two antennae on their heads.

Sensory Perception: It remains a mystery what spectrum of light the ancient Loreirrans saw in. However, archaeological evidence suggests that their vision might have been akin to that of humans, as evidenced by colored art found in deep caverns.

Unique Markings and Appearance: Art depictions of the ancient Loreirrans reveal a distinctive appearance characterized by:

Dark skin or fur, setting them apart from the neon complexion of modern Loreirrans.

Intricate and unique markings covering their bodies, akin to the patterns seen on tigers or leopards.

Extinction: Unfortunately, the subspecies of ancient Loreirrans is now extinct. Their unique physical characteristics and visual perceptions have been lost to history, with only remnants of their existence preserved in ancient art and records.

Sound and hearing in Bloodborne's cosmology

Eyes may be the dominant motif in Bloodborne, relating to the characters' obsession with truthseeking and insight, but a while back, I noticed something odd about the One Third of Umbilical Cord. Despite its rather evocative name, it more closely resembles an eye-laden human cochlea, or the inner ear.

Sound as an arcane force

Mechanically, sound is used as a diegetic medium for the player's abilities within the game world. Bells and chimes are employed to resonate with fellow Hunters, allowing them to cooperate or even battle across worlds. Runes that represent the inhuman spoken words of the Great Ones are memorized to enhance one's attributes. Even the established currency, blood echoes, seem to be a formless medium drawn from slain enemies, and not the blood itself.

In fact, one of the very first runes players are likely to find is Formless Oedon.

The Great One Oedon, lacking form, exists only in voice.

While we never encounter Oedon himself, he is evidently revered by the city, as indicated by the Tomb of Oedon and Oedon Chapel.

Venturing further, we locate and defeat Rom, the Vacuous Spider, and are promptly greeted upon our return to the city by the omnipresent wail of Mergo. Ultimately, Mergo is revealed to be a formless Great One like Oedon; though their crying emanates from a lone pram atop the School of Mensis, the carriage itself is empty.

Mergo is promptly scooped up by the Wet Nurse, whose body is invisible amongst its billowing death shrouds. Upon defeating her, Mergo's crying fades into silence, and we are awarded the One Third of Umbilical Cord. From then, we are free to leave the night of blood and beasts at last at Gehrman's mercy.

Sound as a science

For the modest price of 19.99 USD, an Amygdalan Great One will transport players to the Hunter's Nightmare where they can peruse Yharnam's dark history. The Nightmare Grand Cathedral serves as ground zero for the cruelty inflicted upon citizens in the name of cosmic inquiry.

The Research Hall within the Astral Clocktower is populated by the demented and discarded test subjects featured in a twisted experiment to facilitate contact with the Great Ones.

In the early days of the Healing Church, the Great Ones were linked to the ocean, and so the cerebral patients would imbibe water, and listen for the howl of the sea. Brain fluid writhed inside the head, the initial makings of internal eyes.

The unfortunate products of this experiment suffered a grotesque transformation as their heads inflated to resemble an oversized raisin. Many of the patients were deemed failures, while others retained some semblance of sanity.

A common trend amongst them was a fixation on a "plopping" sound heard from within their own craniums. Those whose heads had inflated to completely absorb their bodies remark on the sound's resemblance to rainfall or the stirring of the ocean. (Should the player equip the Enlarged Head headgear, they can hear for themselves a periodic dripping sound ever so faintly.)

Perhaps the most successful of these damned souls was Saint Adeline, who, after administering multiple Brain Fluids, transforms likely into one of these bulbous heads.

I see a shape. My guide, I see your voice clearly as it bends and bleeds. My own revelation... just for me...

This produces the Milkweed rune, which allows the player to alter their form, turning their head into a lumenwood serving as a nursery for slug-like phantasms.

A call to the bloodless

Beyond this abominable laboratory and prison is the Fishing Hamlet accessed solely by stepping through the face of the Astral Clocktower. Just as the doomed patients envisioned in their maddened rambling, the village floats atop a rainy coast populated by icthyomorphic fishermen. At the far side of this tragic residence lies the carcass of Kos.

Though Kos herself is long dead, the gastly Great One known only as the Orphan of Kos emerges from her womb, carrying a savage weapon that many understand already to be Kos's placenta, still attached by a pulpy pink umbilical cord to the orphan's abdomen. After slaughtering the Orphan of Kos, a black, wraith-like figure appears from Kos's remains, still attached to her bloated belly. By severing this connection, the child is returned to the sea, and the rain promptly ceases.

Returning to the entrance of the Fishing Hamlet, a shaman villager mutters to himself, cursing Byrgenwerth and the Hunters for their sins. If the player has completed Saint Adeline's quest, they can equip the Milkweed Rune to reveal further dialogue:

"Listen for the baneful chants. A call to the bloodless, wherever they be. A call to the bloodless, wherever they be. Fix your ears, to hear our call."

True enough, should the player position themselves near any of the barnacled shacks in the village and strain their ears, low murmurs of unseen inhabitants recite an entrancing curse. This spite is what fuels the very nightmare and seals the Hunters in a generational cycle of misery.

Conflict of anatomy

What mainly struck me as fascinating about the One Third of Umbilical Cord's resemblance to the cochlea pertained initially to etymology. "Cochlea" is the Greek word for "snail shell," and the inner ear is so named for its resemblance to a whorled gastropod shell.

Snails and slugs are of course a common sight in Bloodborne. From the tiny phantasms regarded as augurs of the eldritch Truth to the Great Ones Kos and Ebrietas, these slimy angels harbor great spiritual significance to the various schools of Yharnam's esoteric leaders. Stranger still are the snail women, the mermaid-like enemies who are often found attached to large, whorled shells not unlike the One Third of Umbilical Cord in appearance.

The second linguistic comparison to be drawn relates to the central depression of a whorled shell, referred to as the "umbilicus," relating back again to the One Third of Umbilical Cord's origins.

A great relic, also known as the Cord of the Eye. Every infant Great One has this precursor to the umbilical cord.

Use to gain Insight and, so they say, eyes on the inside, although no one remembers what that truly entails.

Throughout the game, the player has the potential to collect four of these fetishes, despite only three are required for the secret ending. Two of them are obtained directly from infant Great Ones, the first being Mergo, and the second from Arianna's child. However, the Orphan of Kos, another "infant," lacks this special artifact.

...Well, not exactly, anyway.

Looking closer at the weapon in its hand, it certainly doesn't resemble a placenta, no thanks to the blade-like cutting edge. In fact, its shape is strangely reminiscent of, well, a human ear, or perhaps more accurately an ear shell.

If this was truly the intention behind its design, the attachment to a literal umbilical cord would be a fascinating spin on the One Third of Umbilical Cord's visual similarity to the cochlea.

For later ramblings

I'll admit, this sounds like a lot of pointless drivel. The truth is, there's plenty more I want to write on this subject, in particular why I think they would want to use ears as a symbol, as well as how it would relate to the greater mysteries of the narrative. But that would be too much to hope for anyone to read at once.

Until then, I suppose I'll just plant the seed and water it later with supplemental observations and theories.

Devotion to the Holy Face

THE NAME "(J)ESU(S) NAZARENE" FOUND ON THE SHROUD

A Paris-based organization CIERT, the International Center for the Study of the Shroud, found writing on the cloth. Below and to sides of the chin, there are three regular lines where no imprint is present. When the official photographs of the Shroud were divided into tens of thousands of squares, each square was given an optical density and was put into a visualization program, some letters gradually began to appear. They were in Latin and Greek: under the chin was written “Jesus” and on one side “Nazarene”.

This was possible because the Romans employed an Exactor Mortis whose task was to make sure a condemned man was dead. After examination of the corpse, the Exactor Mortis would use a cloth with glue to write a person’s name on the face. Where these strips were drawn, the face was not affected by the process that made the imprint.

A recent study by French scientist Thierry Castex has revealed that on the shroud are traces of words in Aramaic.

Barbara Frale, an Italian paleographer at the Vatican archives, told Vatican Radio on July 26 2009 that her own studies suggest the letters on the shroud were written more than 1,800 years ago. She says in a a bulky, 392-page volume called La Sindone di Gesù Nazareno that she used computer-enhanced images of the shroud to decipher faintly written words in Greek, Latin and Aramaic scattered across the cloth. She asserts that the words include the name "(J)esu(s) Nazarene" — or Jesus of Nazareth — in Greek. She also believes that Jesus’ death certificate read: “Jesus Nazarene. Found guilty (of inciting people to revolt). Put to death in the year 16 of Tiberius. Taken down at the ninth hour.”

Thierry Castex is a French geophysicist specializing in seismic processing for a big oil company. He started working on the Shroud in 2009 especially focused on the 3D attributes. His specialized imaging software produced a most astonishing view of the frontal image of the Shroud.

A transnational effort produced stark revelations about the extent of China’s malicious cyberactivities last week, with indictments and sanctions against Chinese government-linked hackers accusing them of targeting foreign government officials, lawmakers, politicians, voters, and companies. The accusations, made by the United States, United Kingdom, and New Zealand, centered mainly on espionage and data theft but also involved what U.S. officials and experts said is an alarming evolution in Chinese cybertactics. 

While the main indictment against seven Chinese nationals was brought by the U.S. Justice Department, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control announced sanctions on two of those individuals and a company linked to China’s Ministry of State Security for targeting U.S. critical infrastructure sectors, including a Texas energy company and a defense contractor that makes flight simulators for the U.S. military.

“What is most alarming about this is the focus is not on data theft and intellectual property theft but rather to burrow deep into our critical infrastructure with the intent of launching destructive or disruptive attacks in the event of a major conflict,” Jen Easterly, the director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), said in an interview. 

CISA defines critical infrastructure sectors as those whose destruction would have a “debilitating effect” on the economy, national security, public health, and safety, dividing them into 16 categories including communications, defense, manufacturing, energy, agriculture, water, and transportation. 

The highest-profile attacks on those sectors in recent years—against the Colonial Pipeline, meat production giant JBS, and government system operator SolarWinds—have been attributed to groups in Russia. But U.S. agencies last year found malware in systems in Guam, home to key U.S. military bases, that they linked to a Chinese hacking group known as Volt Typhoon. Easterly said they have found more examples since then. 

“We’ve actually spent time with our hunt teams finding Chinese cyberactors in our critical infrastructure and eradicating them,” she said. “The threat is not theoretical.”

Experts said the increased Chinese activity doesn’t so much reflect an enhancement of capabilities as it does a shift in willingness and focus amid growing competition with the United States. “I think they’ve become increasingly brazen, to the point where the U.S. government finds it necessary to call out that behavior in public,” said Katie Brooks, the director of global cybersecurity policy at Aspen Digital.

Defending U.S. critical infrastructure systems from malicious cyberactors is “magnificently difficult,” said Thomas Pace, the co-founder and CEO of the cybersecurity firm NetRise who previously led cyber-response and detection teams for the U.S. Energy Department. They are vastly spread out, and many run on older systems that were not built with cybersecurity in mind and by private entities that don’t have the government’s wherewithal.

“You have a massive resource problem—the idea that you’re going to have a water municipality in Mobile, Alabama, stop the Chinese from getting in, there’s no world where that’s true,” Pace said.

Brooks described the U.S. infrastructure landscape as “target rich, resource poor.”

The Biden administration has made cybersecurity and defense a priority, attempting to set baseline mandates for industries that would require them to ensure cybersecurity protections. 

The idea is to “empower individual agency regulators to set minimum cybersecurity standards and enforce them,” said Anne Neuberger, the U.S. deputy national security advisor for cyber and emerging technologies. “I think the average American assumes that we have minimum cybersecurity protections in place at their hospital, at their water system,” she said. “It’s interesting how much resistance there has been and really how much the president has just changed the game because he recognized that it was unsustainable.”

Much of the problem lies in updating and upgrading outdated systems governing critical infrastructure. CISA and Easterly have repeatedly stressed the importance of making online systems “secure by design,” advocating additional legal protections for companies that integrate cybersecurity into the production of their systems. While that movement has gained momentum in the past year, it mainly focuses on newer systems, while significant gaps remain in older ones.

“While [China] is a sophisticated cyberadversary, many of the methods that it has used to break into critical infrastructure are not, because we’ve made it easy for them. They’re taking advantage of known product defects,” Easterly said. “It has to be prioritized that some of that legacy technology is deprecated.”

Although China is becoming a far broader threat for America’s cyberdefenders, other U.S. adversaries continue to pose significant challenges. Russian-speaking ransomware groups—which cut off access to online systems unless they are paid huge sums of money—were linked to an attack in late February on a leading insurance payments platform, Change Healthcare, which led to payment systems going down at hospitals and pharmacies around the country. 

Russian state-backed hackers were also blamed for breaches of core systems at tech giants Microsoft and Hewlett Packard Enterprise this year. And late last year, cyberattackers linked to Iran compromised water systems across “multiple U.S. states,” according to a joint advisory by U.S. and Israeli agencies.

“I’ve described it as an ‘everything, everywhere, all at once’ scenario—you could see multiple disruptive attacks on critical infrastructure, and that’s something that we need to be sure that the American people and our critical infrastructure owners and operators are prepared for,” Easterly said.

In a letter to state governors last month, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Environmental Protection Agency head Michael Regan warned of potential cyberattacks on water systems around the country, which they said are “an attractive target for cyberattacks because they are a lifeline critical infrastructure sector but often lack the resources and technical capacity to adopt rigorous cybersecurity practices.”

Neuberger said multiple sectors suffer from similar vulnerabilities. “In the health care sector’s case, hospitals and health care institutions rank among the lowest across sectors in terms of their cybersecurity protection, which is ironic because the impact of their disruption is the most significant,” she said, adding that the range of targets that adversarial hackers are willing to go after has also expanded. “We used to believe that criminals would leave hospitals alone. Hospital attacks are up 80 percent in the last quarter of 2023.”

Neuberger said the administration is likely to roll out additional cybersecurity requirements for hospitals and health care providers, particularly those participating in Medicare and Medicaid. “We have requirements for how quickly blood has to be cleaned up if spilled in a hospital. We need to have requirements for how quickly a critical patch has to be patched,” she said. Attacks like the one against Change Healthcare serve as a wake-up call to companies, she added, “because they see that this could happen. Theoretical risks become real.”

Another priority has been ensuring that companies and local authorities know what to do in the event of an attack. Last week, CISA published new proposed rules on cyberincident reporting for critical infrastructure that would require companies to report major cyberattacks to the agency within 72 hours and any ransom payments within 24 hours.

“This is not a matter of preventing. This is really a matter of building the resilience so that we can deal with these disruptions, we can respond to them, we can recover rapidly and continue to provide services to the American people,” Easterly said.

Efforts by adversaries to disrupt U.S. systems are likely to further escalate in the months leading up to November’s presidential election—along with potential efforts by China and Russia to influence the election, which the U.S. intelligence community has warned about. “I think any of these threat actors are looking for vectors of instability,” Brooks said. “So elections, definitionally, while hopefully free, fair, and democratic, are also destabilizing in many senses because they present the possibility of a change in power.”

Beyond shoring up domestic defenses, Washington is also working to bolster international cyberpartnerships and alliances, as with last week’s coordinated actions against China by the United States and the United Kingdom, followed closely by New Zealand. More than a dozen countries have signed on to CISA’s Secure by Design commitments, while the Biden administration’s International Counter Ransomware Initiative, launched in 2021, has grown to include more than 60 countries.

“The first component of our strategy has been to set rules of the road and build international alliances, because there’s one global internet, and the only way to tackle threats is to do it with partners,” Neuberger said.

“It is absolutely vital,” Easterly said. “There are no borders in cyberspace, and many critical infrastructure owners and operators are global companies.”

The global approach also includes offensive cyberactions against adversaries, which was one of the key pillars of the Biden administration’s National Cybersecurity Strategy released last year. “Offensive cyberoperations, much like the defensive, have to be integrated into our geopolitical goals,” Neuberger said. “The president has made clear that cybersecurity and emerging technologies are fundamental national security geopolitical issues, which has enabled the administration to be more aggressive in integrating defensive and offensive cyberoperations into a larger strategy.”

Neuberger declined to comment on specific offensive cyberactions but said the United States and its allies must use offensive capabilities in a more considered manner than their adversaries might.

“I would note that defense and offense are closely linked because before launching an offensive attack, one must consider what comes next in terms of the adversary’s response,” she said. “It’s much easier to be on the attack. An attacker has to find one open window. A defender has to lock down every door and every window.”
