happy trails to my favorite orpheus ever, reeve carney!! the fact that i never got to see him live is a tragedy. no one will ever do it like him. you do not understand how sad i am that the last original broadway cast member is leaving, and his portrayal of orpheus is so fundamental to the character. i'm officially in mourning.

I just had another Hadestown thought, because I am so normal about this musical.

The fact that Orpheus turns around shows that he had the potential to become just like Hades. In Epic II Orpheus sings about how Hades feared that Persephone would never come back to the underworld when she was on the surface and that’s what fueled his paranoia and jealousy. Then in Doubt Comes In, part of the reason Orpheus turns around is because he doesn’t trust Eurydice enough to believe she will follow him back out into the cold and dark instead of staying in Hadestown where she’s guaranteed to be provided for.

Ngl I'm pretty weirded out by depictions of Circe that make her characterization as motherly when her myths are *reads notes on hand*

Turning Scylla into a monster because she was jealous her lover liked her.

Making Odysseus sleep with her after turning his men to swine and discovering he took moly.

Turned Picus, a married man, into a woodpecker because he said no to her sexual advances.
