Lu little details (1)
It’s the little details what make me hallucinate every single time there’s an update. Now, eventhough I may forget plenty of the ones I noticed while reading or thinking through (and some other I might have missed), I’m gonna try to list some of them.
Im going to focus more on reference-to-games details not little details about the dynamics between the group.
  1. The first posts actually are full of references. Like really full. It would be endless to point out all of them. (Twilight and the soup, Legend and the seagulls, time being the one talking to the fairy, different views of the princess, Wind and the soup too, Twilight quoting Rusl (It’s not the only time), Legend thinking of “a separete world”) My favourite, probably, is Wind asking for Kaepora to repete what he had said. In this category I might add everything she took under consideration when decicing not just their personalities but also even their ages, and all the answers to some questions, being actually incredible the fact that Twi is ambidextrous (Tbh i don’t know what’s actually more impressive, the fact that jojo carefuly has in mind the dominant hand of each Link or the fact that someone, actually managed to notice Twilight would change hands) (Maybe I was not paying attention) (Now, I’m wondering if that drawing of Time shooting it was intentional. Because, if you look carefully, he is actually holding it like a right handed person would)
  2. Wild not knowing about wallmasters. This is the most obvious and straight to the point one of the boys having lived in different Hyrules and having had different adventures, however, in the comics that follow the stroryline you can also get from what they say several times hints of this exact same thing. Anyway, my favourite example of this is Sky asking who Ganon was.
  3. I would add here the different opinions of the Links on different matters (I’ve already mentioned the different views Hyrule and Wild have on the princess). Another example of this would be Wild and Wind “arguing” about Kings of Hyrule. It makes so much sense. (I’m not gonna go down that opinion/personlity lane, but it’s worth mentioning) And Twilight and Legend complaining about knights, all based on the game experiences.
  4. That image of Twilight holding a puppy and Wild, completely unbothered, next to him. I really like that kind of sense of humour, and it’s a funny tiny irrelevant detail that I very much appreciate.
  5. Warriors referencing his game. I think it’s happened three times. First, when they are talking and he hides himself from a lady and Hyrule laughs at him saying it’s the third time he’s done that, because being a lady’s man has already been proven as a danger .Second time, with the traitor little comic (I missed that one, ups). And third, while talking about the master sword and how “believing you are invencible” it’s a dangerous way of thinking. I know all Links actually make references to their respective games, but some other references feel more remarkable.
  6. I almost forget about it. That conversation between Time and Wild about having entered Gerudo Town is another example of diference between the Links. It’s just that this one has a special place in my mind merely because I had never actually thought of that and it’s in fact wonderful how Wild reacts to hearing Time’s approach into granting himself respect and access to the town. Similar to this, due to the fact that it’s straight up linked to Wild, we have that scene where the gerudo outfit is descovered and he gets teased. (Fun fact; I had no actual clue that goron spice was actually a cooking item in botw until I red this. I had never shopped in the Goron City. And yeah, either I had already beaten Ganon or I was about to)
  7. In Lon Lon Ranch, as expected, we also have several references. Being the most noticeable; Malon explaining Hyrule wht they keep sugar water bowls around, the couple’s mask hanging on the wall, or how sky loves cuccos. (A little also “innocent” one may be that Malon straight up mocks her husband’s nose? Being this a reference to the design of the hero of Time)
  8. One that I also skipped (and very much love) is Twilight seeing some kind of resemblance between Time’s Captain’s hat and the Heroe’s Shade. We also see more Majora’s Mask references, being maybe the most obvious one Time saying: “Poor kid... He met a terrible fate”. Like, I can hear the Salesman’s laugh.
I`m gonna leave it here for now evethough there are plenty more nice details that show the attention to detail of this comics. However, maybe it’s better to divide this into more defined categories, such as the different games or even characters. And maybe, that way, I can stress how much I appreciate some of those, because, let me tell you that I could rant on about every single one of this nonstop, specially if it’s related to who they are as characters. There’s in my opinion just too many good things to say about this guys and how the whole group works.
(please, correct any spelling mistake. I’m not a native speaker)

I put this off for months because if there's anything I hate it's drawing armour and I guarantee you that every time I draw him he will look different because this armour sucked.
So, to explain Calamity;
He's not... Actually from Age of Calamity. I haven't worked out the details yet, but he's Link from before he died in BotW. In retrospect, I probably should have named him something slightly less misleading but it's... kind of too late to change it now so whoops.
In BotW, he's essentially dead. This Link is doomed to die, and despite the fact that his body is revived, I don't think that matters since Calamity himself would be dead.
Fun.

Back when Ocarina of Time came out I was very young and it was my favorite game, so I created a self-insert character named August.
My head-canon was this: Since Koume and Kotake had influenced the creation and birth of Ganondorf he might not be the actual destined male, born every 100 years. Another Gerudo named Ra’Hel had gone out, met a nice Hylian and gave birth to August, the centennial Male. But as this was a threat to Ganondorf, he was disguised and raised among the women and girls. He also had a twin sister and best friend named Havah who knew his secret. (Why didn’t Ra’Hel just take August and Havah and leave? I dunno I was a kid.)
Years later, Link comes and befriends the Gerudo and August in particular. This began the adventures I would write about where Link, Sheik and August quested across Hyrule to stop Ganondorf’s evil plans.
August had the unique weapons of a whip named Sirocco, which he could use for various purposes like Indiana Jones, a beautifully bejeweled Gerudo Scimitar, and a golden, clawed glove of his own making on his right hand that helped him scale/slide down walls as well as fight.
Character wise he was a soft spoken and deeply sensitive, but very confident young man with strong convictions who was very excited to see the outside world and be himself without having to hide. In one story, I wrote that he found out Sheik was Zelda in disguise but kept her precious secret as he deeply understood her predicament, having lived it himself for years. In later stories, he was confused because he found both Sheik (Zelda) and Link attractive! He ultimately fell deeply in love with Link but never told him… although the fact that Link seemed attracted to the male-presenting Sheik gave him hope… Yup, slow-burn/unrequited romance! (Young pre-out bisexual me was pretty spicy don’t you think? Haha)
In the end, he helped Link and Zelda retake the kingdom and while he was supposed to become King, as per tradition, having seen the Gerudo culture from a different POV, he was a strong proponent of abandoning this tradition and passed the crown to his twin sister, Havah. August continued his adventures and friendship with Zelda, but now, sadly, without Link. He journeyed far and wide helping rebuild, looking to rehabilitate the image of the Gerudo across Hyrule. The last story I wrote was a short one where Zelda and August reminisce and share how much they miss Link.
I kept this character locked away for years. Then when Breath of the Wild came out and Link was disguised as a Vai, I remembered August and eagerly found and touched up an old drawing of him. I was so excited! I thought “This old story still works and he fits even better in the BOtW world!” (I didn’t get my own skin tone quite right, as I am a little darker than August in this picture.)
Now that Tears of the Kingdom is out, I am sharing this for the first time. Seeing Link’s arm and the art style of everything as well as the story of ToTK, which is all about finding yourself and finding a family of friends, I felt August fit better than ever! Like it or not The Legend of Zelda has long been a safe, inviting, exciting world for people like me (Jewish, Spanish, Cis-Bi Male) as well as for many others. I hope it continues to be for years to come. Hyrule is big enough for everyone.

My pitch for a Zelda Game - Part 1
A few hours before I wrote this sentence, I read the ‘Legend of Zelda: Clockwork Empire' by Dresden Codak. Now I give you my pitch for a game.
Disclaimer: I have only played Breath of the Wild and a little bit of Ocarina of Time (and OOT was a few years ago, mind). Plus, I’m not the biggest expert on Zelda lore (I know a little bit but that’s it) so bear with me if you please. Also, i don't own BOTW, this is just ideas.
To my knowledge, a Zelda game is always in a mediaeval setting. There’s nothing wrong with that, but why not fast-forward a little? How far, you ask? Not as far as the 21st century. I’m talking about the Early Modern period, something like the late 1700s-early 1800s mixed with the mediaeval vibe and setting we are so used to.
We open with a cutscene. A slow look around Zelda’s room )similar to the start of Spider-man PS4) at Hyrule Castle. Pictures and paintings of her father, her mother and her nerdy interests. Scientific Journals, stuff like that.
Suddenly, King Rhoam is shaking her to wake up. He tells her that the soldiers of the Ganon Empire (who they have been at war with) are inside the walls and that she must leave at once. She protests, but he insists.
The first part of the gameplay tutorial begins. Rhoam gives her a dagger and tells her to run. Zelda is at first accompanied by guards who are immediately cut down by soldiers who look a lot like this but with different colours, no fancy wigs maybe a bit more armour and perhaps a smidge of dark magic empowerment:
Tumblr media
If the player tries to fight the highly trained soldiers while playing as a fairly trained (I mean, Zelda is a Princess. She’s got to have had at least a little training, but still) 17 and ½ year-old wearing a nightdress who doesn’t get out much, they will die, because guns. As they run to the stables, they see a soldier ruthlessly shoot a pleading child. This is where the melee fighting tutorial begins.
Yeah, the tone is pretty heavy to start with.
The stable master runs up, saying ‘That poor boy! Princess, you must run!’ then they give brief instructions on how to ride a horse (which is pretty much the same as BOTW). The player can go back for instructions at any time.
As they ride out, the camera shifts to see the rest of the castle on fire and Rhoam fighting for his life.
Tumblr media
With little choice, Zelda rides away into the nearby Kokori forest.
Tumblr media
CUTSCENE TIME!!
Zelda gets off her horse and takes a breather to find that some Bokoblins are heading towards her.
Tumblr media
She draws her knife and attempts to fight back, but one of them wacks her with its bat and knocks her to the floor. After a quick shot of her seeing double, she puts up her hand to protect herself and suddenly a golden light glows from it, before sputtering and promptly dying.
She notices some arrows being fried at the creatures before everything turns black and her head hits the ground.
She wakes up in circular, wooden room. She exits the curtain door to finds herself in a Kokori City, a large village of tree-homes, walkways and bridges.
Tumblr media
She’s told by a guard waiting outside the hut to go to Elder’s hut, which is basically the largest building. The Village Elders grill her on what happened (perhaps here we have the opportunity to use some elements from a Telltale game in her replies that affect the game later).
Tumblr media
The conversation between the Elders about what to do quickly descends into petty bickering (because politicians).
Suddenly, Link appears behind her, startling Zelda. More telltale-game dialogue choice ensues, to every question Link either doesn’t say much or says nothing at all (I know not speaking is pretty much part of his character but he can canonically talk so let’s just make it so he doesn’t talk that much?) and then says ‘Come’.
Link’s basically like ‘I believe you. Ganondorf’s Army will soon take over the rest of the Kingdom. He must be stopped, but the Elders are mindless fools.’  He says that he will try and sway them, proceeding to refuse to elaborate and leave.
Then in comes Saria, who introduces herself as a childhood friend of link. She apologises for his refusal to elaborate, as he doesn’t talk much. She explains that she and Link rescued Zelda from the bokoblins and that golden light was magic. She advises her to head to the Sheikah to learn magic, as they were the last to be able to use magic. She leads Zelda to the training area and teaches her the basics of combat (more tutorial time) before giving Zelda a map of some of Hyrule (with the location on in the form of an ‘X’. can’t go wrong with the classics), a recipe book, a bow, some arrows and a Kokori sword. She then wishes her on her way, telling her she needs to convince the people of the village.
The player can now take the opportunity to explore the village. It’s shops, training area and stuff like that.
I’ll leave the story there for now. The gameplay is basically the same as BOTW (like the controls, combat, and living off the land) apart from a few major differences (magic instead of a Sheikah slate, and the ‘Sheikah Slate Ability Select Button’ can later be used to select a spell). Zelda can use weapons, having had some training.
Guns (flintlock muskets) can be picked up and used. They do massive amounts of damage but they take ages to reload and possibly have a chance to misfire. You can also switch to stabby mode or shooty mode. And different types of handheld bladed weapons like swords have different fighting styles (cutlass, rapier, broadsword, etc). Plus, there is also the idea for leading armies or small platoons of troops (which I may elaborate on in the next one).
A quick note: Guardians are buried all around the kingdom (and in some towns and villages are used as local decorations). Does this mean something?
Tumblr media
Finally, I would like to point out the books given to Zelda are in the ‘Books’ section of your inventory. Something that’s in it from the start is ‘Zelda’s journal’. It essentially details the last few months. It goes like:
‘Father got me some books today. A brand-new thesis on why the Sheikah went into hiding. I heard some of the war Generals say that some far-off Empire has suddenly invaded our neighbours.’
A couple days later ‘The Invaders arrived at our borders. Fleeing refugees say they have advanced weaponry, and powerful magicians. Father has sent diplomats and some of the army to try and resolve this, but I worry - most of the army is stretched out across the kingdom, fighting monsters like Bokoblins.’
‘The diplomats have returned - or at least, their heads have. It’s war.’
‘Father’s already greying hair has turned completely white. The Generals say that the troops are terrified of the enemy’s magic, and the weapons they use (which are apparently called ‘guns’). If only the Sheikah hadn’t taken their secrets after the magic purge. Then we might stand a better chance. Still, we’ll beat them… right?’
‘The enemy is already at our gates after only three months. Father would have sent me away sooner, but I have been gravely ill until yesterday. Our castle is protected by ancient enchantments, but many fear that isn’t enough. Even I fear we may lose.’
I hope you all enjoyed this! I plan to do more of these (with more research done and actual planning). This is all just a bunch of ideas mashed together in a few hours. Farewell!

Ok real shit I haven’t worked on my AU In a hot minute.
While I do draw tons of art of link and tetra for it I never actually continue forward with the lore and I do have some ideas with it but a lot of inspiration is taken from botw and I don’t wanna seem like I’m copying off of the sequel just for clout,,,,
BUt I notice the adult timeline has a l o t to do with ghost, phantoms and souls. Hence the names PHANTOM hourglass and SPIRIT tracks. And I’m a pretty big fan of the ghostey pirate shit ever since I watched dead men tell no tales, and plus the mobey dick story.
In my ORIGINAL au without linked universe, wind has the actual master sword but one little thing. I added too much lore to the Linked universe version of this au.
Ysee, after “freeing” the spirits on the island link runs into, some of them reside within the hourglass in links phantom sword. I made that so it could fit with why wind has the phantom sword since sky has the master sword with him, and sky wouldn’t like hearing about fi being at the bottom of the ocean.
The spirits give link a power boost that works like a magic meter. The attack when you hold down the B or C button in Zelda games, then bam! Spin attack! Except it’s souls from 100 years ago instead of just regular fairy magic. And also, phantom hourglass doesn’t happen in my AU! So I assumed Wind had stumbled upon that phantom sword in the island he was in as he stumbled upon a chest that had the hero of times tunic. It’s like how wild randomly finds weapons lying around.
And about the spirit meter, here’s another way this looks like I took inspo from botw 2.
Tumblr media
This fuckin hand. Some time I thought- “why not make the spirits green? And the magic meter in game is already green anyway so why not?” But I got a lil stumped. Because that’s already an upcoming mechanic. But, it works a little differently. The green appears on wind waker links TWO hands instead of one, and his eyes turn green along with green markings on his face like the fierce deity.
This source of power is dangerous though, because the spirits have link in a “I give you power you give us your body” type of position. An unfair trade. If link USES this, they literally feed off of him and try to gain control over him and hurt everything around him, since they’re tainted with malicious intent due to unsolved turmoil from ocarina of time. The sudden flood and rip away from their daily lives have them furious! They tried to kill link because they were thinking they were gonna take revenge on Oot link for leaving them.
So using this “assistance” is a danger to link himself even though it’s extremely powerful and gets the job done. And not just that, because he keeps wielding the phantom sword, the spirits sit at the back of his head and give him visions of their history and their fear when the flood was rising. The helplessness, hopelessness, and regret in not doing everything they wanted before they died. And the fear. The voices are YELLING. and to add on top of that? Link always heard about how great Oot link was, now he’s hearing about how “””terrible””” he was from angry dead people who don’t know that the flood was completely out of anyones control except the goddesses themselves. Golden goddesses, din, nayru, and Farore btw. As if his inferiority complex with hearing how GREAT Oot link was wasnt enough. First, get compared to only how great he is and wishing to be like him, then how he was terrible for disappearing and leaving everyone to die. He almost died so many times because they thought he was HIM. And the source comes from a petty fuckin ghost of ganondorf, that just so happened to not be sealed. And this, my fellas, is exactly where he chooses to give up on reincarnation. Wind waker. At least in this lore. I would start to say that this ganon form would be one of the earliest forms of calamity ganon from 10,000 years ago, but I’m still hesitant on that. Yes, it’s my au, but I don’t exactly wanna borrow every concept just so it looks cool. So I’m stumped.

now that i've finished!!! i have THOUGHTS i'm just rambling don't mind me. this is the abridged version of this post because i initially had 12 different points and lost most of my thoughts when i accidentally hit ctrl+z :3 SPOILERS FOR TOTK PLEASE DON'T CLICK IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED.
first. i am ignoring that link got his arm back. i understand why it does that, but i am not keeping nor acknowledging that bit of information - not for a while, at least. the gloom can be gone. ganon can be destroyed. rauru still had to REPLACE LINK'S ARM ENTIRELY. unless his weird ghost arm just… slid on top of link's existing one like a glove. but thats SILLY. i like the cool dragon arm. i want link to start growing out his nails on his other hand and get them done in hateno or something and continue to have cool little claws.
second. i want to write up a page or something somewhere detailing my opinion on Ships. like… i didn't ship zelink really UNTIL botw/totk, and even then, it is purely because of my partner and i talking about/developing some stuff with them. and the more i think on sidlink or even link/mipha the more the zora age starts to make me Question things?? and then obviously, despite my personal adoration for revali, he and link would NOT get along super well , especially romantically? ( at the very least, NOT my link, not without some MAJOR work on both sides ) idk. link ships in-universe are hard lmao give me crossovers or something where i'm not working off the burden of canon (this is only mostly a joke) - also urbosa is a lesbian, and daruk is more like a dad. this is hard. riju is ............ viable i guess but i dont know they also don't feel super romantic. yunobo is his hype man not his boyfriend.
third. the ganon fight was SO fun. i absolutely adored the very end of it; and it felt way more involved than the big pig from botw?? so like even though, essentially, those final phases were the same sort of type of gameplay (very hard to lose, honestly) it was STILL super fucking fun i had such a good time exploding his pustules. how many times now has link stabbed ganon in the forehead.
fourth. other than the arm, i'm excited because the ending really didn't step on the toes of ANY of my vague thoughts for development so far?? like i will still be able to take my link in EXACTLY the direction i was hoping to!! where he KNOWS what responsibility rests on him; and he's quiet because of the burden, but also like… he doesn't know WHY he's the hero. why ganon is the villain. he knows ganon did evil things, he knows he's supposed to hate the man for … well, everything, but he sort of sits on a weird little line where he hates him, but also doesn't understand why he should feel anything at all about him? the hatred is a requirement. he has to hate the calamity. the demon king. even if he's never really met him. even if he doesn't know anything about how they got here. he just. HAS to hate him.
fifth. i am thinking about link's scars. not that he canonly has ANY. but i really want to look over the events of these games, and my own personal playthroughs, and find a few scars to really give him more character. i think that scars can be something SO important. something that can have such a heavy story behind it. like… i'm never gonna forget my first lynel battle, for example. idk i really need to draw him a WHOLE reference i'mj ust fufuckcing tired. might also make an art sideblog for that when it comes to it because i fear my content getting notes.
sixth. i want to chew on every character in this game like a stimmy squeaky toy

Something me and my friends discussed that we wanted in the totk (that we knew would never be added) was Link’s hair slowly growing.
Like maybe every time it hits midnight a few strands are added, and there would be a barber shop for whenever you felt like cutting it. You could essentially make Link look like Tangled if you didn’t cut it.
A super cute idea I came up with was that there would be a place like a stump or flowerbed to sit on in Korok Forest, if Link’s hair is long enough some koroks will eventually pop out and start braiding his hair, sticking in flowers and little twig braids, so you can walk around with long, braided hair.
I love that everyone saw that Link's hair was long and just collectively said we want it longer. We really are turning him into Rapunzel. It's such a cute idea, I'll have to draw it sometime!
I talked about this like back in September but I have a feeling that his hair's growth is related to the plot in some way because they show his long-haired outfit most people recognise as the TotK fit and suddenly all the TotK marketing has him in a modified version of his Champion's Tunic again. Maybe Link gets some character development or his toga set is a huge story element they don't want to reveal so close to it's release? Or perhaps all the footage Nintendo has of long-haired Link is story-related (though at the same time, he has short hair in his marketing like in BotW). It's a shame Nintendo keeps us all in the dark for so long for these big mainline Zelda title, there's a million and one differing theories about everything from the plot, to the background architecture, to Link's clothing and hair. Zelda theorists are gonna love the next Zelda Direct lol.

#ShowYourProcess
I love these kinds of tag games 😄 Thank you @suibianjie for tagging me! Here's a link to her process post
RULES: When your work is tagged, show the process of its creation from planning to posting, then tag 5 people with a specific link to one of their creative works you’d like to see the process of. Use the tag #showyourprocess so we can find yours!
Tumblr media
She picked the above painting. I'll talk about the process under the cut!
Unfortunately, I merge layers and discard sketches/flats/in-progress files once I finish a piece so it takes up less space in storage. Therefore, this piece does not have a lot of visuals for a process post 😅 I will try my best with what I have!
1. Planning
This was originally for the @/mdzsnet 5th anniversary week, but I got busy! This prompt was "Center your creation around your favorite relationship scene". Since I already painted my favorite ("If he catches me, I'll...") then I chose another good scene from near the ending 🙂
My initial sketches are just me blocking out colors. For example, these pink flower blobs are what everything looks like at this stage.
Tumblr media
2. Creation
I use Photoshop, Autodesk Sketchbook, and Krita! Sketchbook for sketches + flats, Krita for rendering, Photoshop for color adjustment.
The order that I paint every painting is faces first, then hair, clothes, hands, then background. And in every painting, without fail, I will be painting the clothes or even finishing the background when I realize I haven't painted the ears yet 😅 every single time.
Originally this piece was planned to have 21 flowers. Except they take FOREVER to paint and I'm not patient enough for that. What do you do when you don't want to paint 21 flowers? Don't have 21 flowers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once I've finished the base shading for everything (left pic), now the magic happens - adding adjustment layers, color balance, lighting, and extra textures on top. I realize this is very "draw two circles, then draw the rest of the owl" but one day I'll remember to save enough in-progress pics to do a full process post! 😬
3. Posting
I usually schedule paintings to be posted the afternoon/night after I finish them, unless I have to make a deadline. I check immediately if it shows up in search and tags so I can edit/delete and repost as needed. Coming up with captions is the worst, so I usually just use a quote😂
Tagging:
@zazrichor (this post) the coloring, the lighting, the gorgeous detail on this one, i am obsessed🥺
@leonzhng (this post) your gifsets are always absolutely bonkers cool, every gif looks so dynamic and complex
@artpatriarch (this post) the textures and shading on this make me go absolutely wild
@supertaliart (this post) the BOTW AU is so breathtaking everyone's designs are beautiful
@milkcrates (this post) clouuuddd the composition, the colors, the beautiful brush strokes!!
No pressure if you don't want to participate! Feel free to opt out.
You can show your process however you want, and if you'd like to talk about a different creation than I picked, go right ahead! I just love to learn about peoples' techniques and workflow😄

LoZ AU: The Courage of Running Away Supplementary Post FOUR
I think it’s four!  I don’t know for sure at this point!
The next actual story post is going up right after this don’t worry
#AU August
#LoZ AU: The Courage of Running Away
So I mentioned early on that I don't think about game mechanics too hard with CoRA because it's more focused on the story
And I mentioned last post that I've been thinking about it more lately as we've been getting fight scenes lmao
I don't think as many people are interested in this but it does have a lot to do with how I'm managing what the characters can and can't do, specifically Queen Zelda, so here's an overview of what's in my head:
CoRA's game play, if it were a game, would try to marry the botw gameplay with both alttp and Age of Calamity
(why try to include something that's technically a different genre? More examples of a higher variety of characters than just Link, that's why)
The major thing this means is that all characters have both a stamina wheel and a magic meter, and the magic meter also functions like the A-move bars in aoc; if you can't do general magic you can still use it for things that take immense effort, which covers things like A-move style attacks but also probably includes shit like making a wish so hard that it comes true.
Tumblr media
[Image Description: Part of a fake screenshot of CoRA as a game.  Link is running across a green field, hard enough to sweat.  He has a bright green stamina wheel by his head that’s partially depleted, twelve full hearts across the top left of the screen, and to the left of the hearts is a long thin blue meter that’s been partially depleted as well.  End ID.]
(The Magic Meter is blue here because that way all three Goddess Colors are represented in Link’s personal resources.)
The magic meter can be replenished by three things: rest (both sleep and meditation), potions designed for it, and success in battle (smacking dudes in the face successfully). It cannot be replenished by food the way that stamina and hearts can but since on average most people don't use their magic every day, most people are walking around with a full meter at all times.
In other words, Queen Zelda used the equivalent of her A-move to blast Astramorus through that wall, because she could afford to do so.
That's also why she was being slightly less active in some of the other fight scenes, including why she didnt step in when Astramorus was getting slapped around by Ghirahim, because she didn't know that she COULD afford to waste an A-move when Ghirahim's rather obviously a high level threat.
She did spend one on the Silver Hinox but as anyone who's played aoc knows it tends to take more than one A-move to take out a red hinox.
There's items that draw on your magic meter and then there's items that have their own internal reserves, like the wizzrobe rods.
As for the stamina wheel, it functions more or less like the one from botw. Some people use it for different things depending on their aptitudes; Marla and most other Zora wouldn't use stamina for normal speed swimming and Rito wouldn't use it when gliding. An old man might use his stamina wheel for a trot he didn't need it for as a youth. After Marla gifts Link with one of her scales he doesn't need it for normal speed swimming either.
Generally weapons would have a more complicated durability interplay than what we see in the botw system; cheap weapons and wooden weapons would have durability that looked similar to that but metal weapons in general would never break until Link got the power gloves in Subrosia, and then they'd start wearing down more quickly and sometimes shatter after an A move. The flipside is that Link can hit harder. He CAN turn the effect of the power gloves off, which is good because he'd keep breaking cups.
The Master Sword wouldn't break at all but he's not getting it until the sequel.
The power gloves also increase Link's strength just in general and he absolutely went around Subrosia picking up huge rocks when he got them. If he wanted, he could probably go moblin tipping.

[Image Description: A blue round globe or disc, it’s unclear, labeled “Moon Pearl.”  It has sparkles under its surface.  End ID.]
The Moon Pearl, which is what Serenumbra used to awaken Ghirahim and summon him to where he wanted, does basically whatever I want that makes sense (if the Dungeon Master in my brain likes it that's what I go with.) It largely works in things that involve interworld travel, but it can also transform things according to reflections on their souls OR it can protect the bearer from general interdimensional shenanigans.
I actually tend to think that he hasn't fully understood what this means yet but that Ghirahim has been made slightly more "human" by having its powers worked on him. The main thing this has meant that he's already noticed is that he's been eating and sleeping, but it's also probably a factor in why he was too dazed by the process to do anything about Serenumbra right then and there.
The thing that the Scarred Woman used to summon Chekov the hinox is a Force Gem like from Four Swords Adventures, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, because if my inner gamemaster thinks she can use something she does. I think in CoRA they're basically little shards of power left in places gods and other powerful spiritual beings have trod, and they're less rare than you'd expect, because there are little gods everywhere. Serenumbra has a lower level spell of some kind that lets him use them as warp points for various purposes, hence why the Scarred Woman could put a hinox in the middle of the castle throne room with one.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: The Scarred Woman in her fox mask holding up a small glowing green crystal with triangular sides.  End ID.]
If anyone hasn't connected the dots yet, that's ALSO where the hinox Link fought in the tutorial dungeon came from. Astramorus wouldn't see this as absolving him of his own responsibility for how things played out but it's absolutely true that Serenumbra has been actively encouraging, aiding and abetting every worst impulse he's been able to catch out of Astra and has planted just as many as he's helped along.
Anyway that all got longer than I meant but it's relevant for the incoming posts, so!

Tumblr media
Ever since my impetuous escapade with Link, I’d been dying to steal him away for some time alone. But of course, as fate would have it, every day following that one was packed with political gatherings and ceremonies and whatever not that I had to attend. All I wanted was to let him know, in detail, how I felt about him, and likewise for him to do the same. It had reached the point where I was losing sleep at night wondering about the true nature of his affections toward me.
So when the first opportunity to speak with him away from prying ears presented itself, I took it. Granted, it wasn’t in the most desirable of circumstances—he and I had been taking part in some grand banquet or another when I’d excused myself as I’d started feeling “out of sorts,” signalling subtly for my knight to follow—but I was desperate, and an empty stairwell not far from the dining hall would have to do.
“Link...” He heard me come to a halt and turned to face me. “I... There’s something I’ve been meaning to discuss with you. And,” I chortled, “I’m quite sure you and I both know what it is.”
He averted his gaze with reddening ears, no words passing his pursed lips.
“I just wanted to tell you that I meant what I said.” His eyes met mine, though his head remained turned. “I know it’s forbidden by law—that accursed law—but I hardly ever stop thinking about you. Even when we’re apart.” Now I, too, felt blood rushing up to my cheeks. I corrected my posture and looked him straight in the eye. “I just...I need to know what lies in your heart. Could you tell me, please?”
His eyes widened. “H-Highness...” His blush spread rapidly from his ears across the rest of his face. “I’m so sorry. I don’t know what else to say... You—oh, Goddess...” He dragged a hand over his face, making his lower eyelids sag. I couldn’t help but smile. “I’m sorry. I just think you’re...perfect. I don’t know...” he trailed off, a crumbling mess of awkwardness.
I let out a chuckle. “Aww, Link,” I cooed in unabashed adoration. I realized I should’ve expected this much from him. “It’s okay. You don’t have to say any more.”
I felt him stiffen as I went in to kiss him. His breaths were shallow, lips all but completely still against my own. I could almost feel his hand trembling as it came to rest against my cheek. And yet, when I opened one eye for a quick peek, his face showed barely any sign of doubt save for a slight dithering of the brow. My heart staggered for him. In hopes of easing his nerves, I gently and sweetly draped my arms around him.
Slowly, he separated his lips from mine and locked gazes with me. Almost nothing had changed about his expression, but his eyes were different; they somehow appeared softer, warmer, more vulnerable, than they had before.
When he went to kiss me again—and he did so with a clear rise in resolve—I let my body lean into his. This elicited a nasal exhale from him as his arm came down to situate itself around my waist, drawing me closer still into his lean frame. A soft hum escaped my throat, which he echoed, only with a touch more weight to it. All of a sudden, it was like we were stripped bare and lying in each other’s arms once again. I felt myself being surrounded by him, thoughts being consumed by him, until the only one left in my mind was, “I love you, Link.”
“Mmh, Princess...” he sighed in reply against my still open mouth. “I love you.” His words burned my lips with their deep-set passion. By now he’d leaned into me so deeply that my back was against the wall, as was my hand which he’d tightly interlocked with his. For one who had come to be known as the “silent knight” for his notorious lack of expressiveness, he surely had a way with body language. The relentless yearning that flowed from his touch was enough to overwhelm me into complete submission.
Alas, my living fantasy was cut short by a clearing of the throat from one of the royal guardsmen down the hall. We were lucky to have found a spot where the nearest guards were around the corner and out of sight, but unfortunately, due to the castle’s architecture, sound travelled quite far through its halls. There was no way to know for certain if we’d been heard or not. If that didn’t make me anxious, it certainly did Link, who’d backed away and was glancing up and down the stairway frantically.
“Hey.” I captured his face in both my hands, forcing the poor thing to look me in the eye. He bore a striking resemblance to a deer at bow point, shoulders tense and eyes wide with fear. “It’s okay,” I mouthed at him. He nodded, taking a shaky breath in and out through the mouth. Seeing him with panic written all over his face was almost more than I could bare. This was the first time I’d ever seen him like this. I wrapped him up tightly in my arms, rubbing up and down his back in slow and soothing motions. He returned my embrace without hesitating. Once he seemed to have regained some of his composure, I raised a hand to my lips and whispered into his ear a gentle suggestion: “What do you think about paying me a visit later tonight?”
I couldn’t see his face, but it was clear the idea made him uneasy. “But...the guards—”
“Won’t be a problem,” I finished for him. “I know of a flaw in their security system that you could easily exploit to make it in and out without being seen.“
He put a gap between us, coming face-to-face with me. The look he gave me was full of uncertainty.
“There’s no need to worry, Link, I promise. Do you think I’m foolish enough to put you in any danger?”
He remained silent, gaze pointed at the floor.
“Oh, for Hylia’s sake...” I rolled my eyes. “Look. Purah and I have used this method countless times, and she’s never once been caught. All you have to do is borrow my Sheikah slate and warp to the location marked on the map. It couldn’t be easier, right?”
He stayed quiet for another moment or two, weighing the options. Then he nodded curtly, a faint smile appearing on his lips, and whispered, “I’ll give it a try.”

let’s do the very late, very unasked for “favorite 2021 things” post!
Tumblr media
kimetsu no yaiba/demon slayer by koyoharu gotouge // mugen train was the first movie i watched in theaters post-vaccine, and it made me give the manga a try. the manga follows a familiar formula but differs from long-running series of its kind in a significant way: brevity. for a battle shounen, it kinda cuts it short. the good guys are introduced, the bad guys are introduced, the extended cast is introduced, a few skirmishes occur, and then the final showdown happens. by doing so, it avoids the pitfalls of many of its counterparts and it deserves points for that. and of course, the art is dynamic and beautiful and really pops off the page. it seems that the author really, really, really enjoyed drawing muzan in particular.
Tumblr media
ted lasso s1 // early in 2021 i craved something that would help me wash off the grime of 2020. i’d heard ted lasso mentioned here and there as a show that supplied the happy brain chemicals. sign me up! it lives up to its reputation - it’s charming and funny, but also takes the opportunity to explore the masks we put on for the world and our innate need for connection. the characters are the special sauce. each starts as a one-note archetype, but the layers are peeled back soon enough. you have grumps, boss bitches, intrepid reporters, folksy midwesterners, extremely rude brits, and so, so many himbos. s2′s exploration of toxic positivity looks promising and i’m going to binge it as soon as i catch a break.
Tumblr media
the legend of zelda: skyward sword // ss was my first post-botw zelda outing, mostly because zelda games are few on the switch. this one is the butt of jokes among zelda fans, but i liked it thoroughly as an origin story. structurally, it’s the antithesis of botw but it works! i didn’t mind the linearity or the initially wonky button controls. the story was cute, the art was cute, the music was cute, zelda was freaking adorable, and the dungeons were fun. i might be biased though, because i’m obsessed with this link. something about the blank, stupid look on his face and how he constantly seems lost and confused speaks to me.
Tumblr media
horimiya // abridging a manga for adaptation to anime doesn’t have to be painful. this is a rare instance where i might prefer an anime to its source manga. it takes core elements of the story, cuts out the majority of the fluff, retains the manga ending, and relies on visual and auditory cues to convey the rest. and it works! you end up with a cast of relatable characters acting like real people. you’re with them for a short while through high school, experiencing the quiet ins and outs of life. that’s it. that’s the show. and you like it, because the writing is really good. not to mention the op is an absolute banger.
Tumblr media
spiritfarer // do you think thunder lotus games timed a story about loss, grief, the messiness of letting go, and contending with past mistakes intentionally? i’d guess many people needed a game like this in the past two years. you are stella, the spiritfarer - taking over for charon, it’s your responsibility to care for wayward spirits as they prepare to journey across the river into the beyond. each is a distinct character with different creature comforts, and you are endlessly attentive to their needs. every farewell is unique; every character’s departure is a sober reminder of our own ultimate fates. this is housed in a relaxed management sim set on a huge boat with an array of fun minigames and meditative music. don’t try to rush through it like i did, though. savor the moment.
Tumblr media
mare of easttown // many have tried to do the broadchurch formula, but this miniseries best nails what made (at least s1 of) broadchurch special: the town must be its own character and its inhabitants must be intricately connected by an ever expanding web of secrets that makes you compulsively watch the next episode. in this one we have mare, a down on her luck police detective who is as much of a mess in her personal life as she is good at her job. episode one is immediately compelling because mare feels so alive on the screen, and her character arc is heartbreaking and cathartic. all of the performances are great and the mystery is satisfying - that’s all i needed out of it.
Tumblr media
dune // years ago, i came away from dune with mixed feelings. it wasn’t a middle of the road feeling - there were things i loved and things i hated about it. i followed the announcement and development of the movie with casual interest, but didn’t think much on it until it was close to release time. and then i watched it. and it was really good. i have personal issues with dune, but i can’t argue against how breathtaking this movie is on the screen. smart adaptation decisions and an incredible sense of place (which was my favorite thing about the book) earn it a spot on this list. i also kinda love how anti-modern blockbuster it feels. all big budget movies are funded to reach the widest audience possible, but this one doesn’t feel like it’s trying to.
Tumblr media
la passe-miroir/the mirror visitor by christelle dabos // in a long-ago catastrophe, the world was broken. earth is now a collection of floating islands suspended by a mysterious force nobody understands. this is the backdrop of lpm. i started it solely on the strength of its cover art and found the opening few chapters extremely disappointing. i didn’t like ophelia or thorn and the initial set up of a forced political marriage turned me off (pet peeve trope). but then the plot started moving, and it moved in directions i didn’t see coming at all. this story is less beauty and the beast and more his dark materials to its great benefit, and its tone is dreamy and strange. as it turns out, what really makes it work are the two leads - imagine my surprise! they develop individually and together in surprising and satisfying ways, to the point that they’re the most interesting characters i’ve read in a long time. well done for a debut, translation issues aside.
Tumblr media
wolfwalkers // i’m pretty sure the opening credits of wolfwalkers was more moving than the majority of what i watched in 2021. the artwork is so damn gorgeous that this movie would make the list even if the story were trash. wolfwalkers takes place around a small irish town bound in duty to a corrupt “lord protector” who is obsessed with order. considering this guy is just straight up oliver cromwell and the story highlights the diminishing nature of the town’s surrounding mystical forest, the symbolism isn’t subtle but it’s effective. beyond that, i admire the way cartoon saloon conveys childhood as a time of wondrous exploration and terror. i’m so happy they’ve announced another movie.
Tumblr media
crooked house by agatha christie // i have phases of going through mystery novels like a hot knife through butter, and christie is queen. i randomly picked up crooked house, it being one of her rare standalones, and was instantly hooked. i love a closed room mystery, and this one is an expertly crafted one. the twist was genuinely unsettling, the cast of characters vibrant, and the writing sparkling. i think it might be my new favorite of hers.
honorable mentions: kimi ni todoke by karuho shiina, death on the nile by agatha christie, gris, gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun by izumi tsubaki, the lord of the rings by j.r.r. tolkien, infinity train

Tumblr media
Cover Art: @neezlebums be sure to show some love to the original here! I cannot stress this enough guys, PLEASE go like and reblog his work. He spends hours upon hours on every single cover drawing and it’s super disheartening that he’s getting 8 notes max on things he’s working really hard on. So please give his post as much love as you give mine!
Words: 1956
Summary: Link takes Zelda out to the Festival of Hylia in the hopes that she can enjoy it as a normal kid, and they share a moment during the fireworks show.
BotW pre-calamity (not HWAOC related)
**If I don’t have explicit warnings, read with caution. It simply means there’s nothing I could think of that could be potentially triggering, but I could’ve just missed something. In that case, please let me know and I’ll be more than happy to put a warning!**
Zelink-mas 2020  l  Masterlist
The concept of soulmates is rather simple for something so deep. Whether it be one soul torn into two, or a red string of fate, or two souls that found comfort in one another, the premise was the same. Lifetime after lifetime, for the eternity that was to come and go, two hearts cried out for one another. They searched high and low, across continents and oceans, across timelines and ages, yearning for their partner—their lost piece.
Yet fate could be a cruel player in the game of existence. It could drive a stake in between a set of mates, or prevent their meeting entirely. It could taunt them with the prospect of forever, and take it away at twice the speed.
It could take those souls and resurrect them only in times of destruction and decimation.
How much could a soul handle? How much could it stretch and bend before it shattered? Was it still marked by trauma all those years later, when it was finally placed into a vessel and sent back into the world?
The soul of a hero, for instance, would be battered and bruised until fate decided there was no use for it.
And until that decision was made, the hero’s soul would stay by the goddess’s side, even thousands upon thousands of years later.
An impending war, what they referred to as a Calamity, was nothing new to the old souls. Yet they were filled with optimism, a sort of youthful comfort that wrapped like a blanket, and old souls did not entirely push away childish ideas and schemes.
Said hero was scampering through the streets, hand in hand with the young goddess, both tucked under cloaks that fared as a decent disguise given most participants were too drunk to think otherwise at this point in the night.
“You cheated,” Zelda accused through a fit of giggles, but she made no move to drop the stuffed sand seal.
“I did not,” Link defended with a borderline emergent smile as he stole a glance towards the booth they’d run from. “I was just… a little better than their usual customers.”
“Yes, because their regular customers consist of skilled soldiers of Hyrule.”
“You don’t know that.”
Zelda pressed a hand over her mouth and laughed again. It got harder to suppress his smile. Something about the freedom that came with sneaking out, on top of the thrill of being where they weren’t supposed to be, left him feeling giddy and mischievous. It’d taken a while to convince Zelda to come with him, but attending the Festival of Hylia to only bestow a blessing over the kingdom wasn’t fair. They’d attended earlier in the day, with the princess wearing a grand, white dress to make her look like the goddess, and all he wanted to do was give her a chance to experience the festival as a normal kid. It was the least she deserved, after spending all of her time and effort focused on the Calamity. Of course, the only way they could actually get out was in a disguise, but Link trusted the cloaks would do their jobs so long as the late night attendees were drinking properly.
“You’re positive we won’t get caught?” she asked, for what had to be the hundredth time since they’d left the castle.
“Do you trust me?” he asked in response, fixing his eyes on hers. They were twinkling even in the darkness, and he could see the Castle Town lights reflected in her irises. When he looked at her like this, when there was no one watching them with attentive eyes, he found it hard to believe she was only Hylian. She radiated a light they couldn’t see, but he knew it was there because she was always so warm. Her eyes were always so bright.
“Yes,” she answered with a nod. Once again, Link almost smiled. But instead, he pulled her by the hand over to another booth. The worker looked too tired to care, so he didn’t have to take much caution in sliding over the rupees and asking for a soft pretzel, a caramel apple that had caught Zelda’s eye, and a set of drinks. It was just a shame they had to release hands to hold it all.
“We used to come to the festivals all the time,” Zelda said after a few bites, letting her shoulder brush against his. “My mother would play the goddess and do the blessings, but after that, father would take me around to the different games and let me play. I was never any good at it, but they gave me prizes anyway. Mother was brilliant, though. She knew just how to get past the games’ rigging.  After her death, father didn’t let me stay out as long. Once I was twelve, my only purpose at the festival was to give the blessings. Did your family always come?”
“Almost every year. My father always took us the first night,” Link spoke with a nod. “Because he was on duty the other two. He tried getting my sister and I to play the games, but I was only interested in the food.”
Another giggle passed the princess’s lips.
“It sounds like you haven’t changed at all,” she replied, nudging him again.
“Except now I know how to win,” he said and gestured to the stuffed sand seal.
“I still think you cheated.”
“They cheated us first.”
Zelda had no argument to that one. Link tossed the paper from his pretzel into the trash, then adjusted the fasten on his cloak.
“Do you think we’ll be able to see the fireworks?” she asked. “I used to watch them from my window all the time.”
“I don’t know if it’s better than the view from your window, but I know a place,” he replied. Zelda slipped an arm around his, like she’d done it a thousand times before, and he ducked his head to hide his face from the overhanging light.
“I’ll have to see it in order to judge,” she said simply. He fought back a smile and pulled her through the streets of Castle Town once more, until they’d reached the outskirts.
Link jumped up to grab the tree branch above them, then turned and held his hands out to her. Apparently his intentions were clear because even in the darkness, he could see that Zelda was appalled.
“We can’t climb on a random person’s house! Link! Get down!” she yelled in a whisper, but he just let the grin cover his face.
“It’s empty. For sale, I think,” he replied with a shrug. She looked around, as if she wanted to make sure they were really alone, before taking his hands. He pulled her into the tree effortlessly, then boosted her up onto the roof of a Castle Town house. “It’s no castle view, but you won’t be eye-level with the fireworks.”
“You can see the entire festival from here,” she spoke when he joined her at the top. “It’s not just lights. You can see everything. How did you..?”
“There was one year when my father had to attend all three nights, so it was just my sister and I. We ran out of rupees trying one of the games, and she was really upset, so I just.. snatched a prize and ran. We climbed onto a roof and stayed there for the rest of the festival, until I was sure he hadn’t sent any soldiers after us. It gave us a pretty good view.”
“You thief!” Zelda accused, giving him a shove. Link bit back a laugh.
“You’re the only person I’ve ever told. So now you’re the holder of some pretty powerful information.”
She hummed in thought and leaned her head against the plushie.
“I could do so much with this. I could tell everyone and finally have my freedom from you.”
“I don’t know if stealing a plushie from a festival booth ten years ago is enough to get me demoted.”
“It’s a serious crime,” but he could hear the laughter in Zelda’s voice. He turned to face her just as the first of the fireworks went off, drowning her in a soft yellow light. Even if he wanted to watch the fireworks, he couldn’t tear his eyes away from her. She was in a category all of her own, and the word beautiful couldn’t describe her in her entirety.
He could call her hair golden, but it still didn’t capture her richness. He could compare her eyes to emeralds, and it still wouldn’t tell how precious they were. He could say her voice was a melody, and it still couldn’t describe how much he loved the song she sang each time she spoke. With every passing day, she grew more and more into the goddess whose blood she carried in her veins. She radiated a power and displayed a wisdom he’d never seen before, yet it felt so familiar to him that it never surprised him. He could watch her for hours, whether she was studying the Sheikah technology or praying at the foot of a goddess statue (not that he did, obviously, because that was sacred and private). It didn’t feel like a job--it never had. He’d give his life for her over and over again, like it was written into his blood and soul. Like he’d done it before.
With how far they’d come, Link wondered just how much could one feel for a single person. If he could shield her from the world, he would. But she didn’t need that. Zelda was strong and independent, but what he wouldn’t give to remain by her side for as long as he could.
She took his arm again and rested her head against his shoulder. Her hold was as gentle as she. Her fingers intertwined with his and he gave her hand a small squeeze.
“Link?”
He hummed to let her know he was listening and ready to answer any question she wanted to ask.
“What do you want for Hylia’s Day?”
The gift giving tradition held true even to this year, but Link didn’t quite know how to answer her. What he really wanted was her. He wanted her to be happy and safe and secure. He wanted the goddess to respond, and for her powers to awaken so she could just enjoy whatever time they had left.
Was there a stronger word that fit this feeling than yearning? Yearning for Zelda and her life and her future.
He bit his cheek in thought, because none of that could be said aloud.
“I want a promise,” he replied at last. “that once this is all over, you’ll keep researching. And that maybe I can stay your knight attendant for as long as you can tolerate me.”
She almost laughed.
“Link.. I can’t promise anything. If I can’t awaken this power, then-“
“You will,” he said, holding her hand tighter. “I believe in you.”
Zelda smiled at him—weak and small, but it still filled him with a warmth that made him feel all the more confident.
“I want a day off to just relax with our friends,” she stated, returning her head to his shoulder.
“All of our friends?”
“Yes, even Revali.”
Link chuckled and shook his head, watching the last of the fireworks pop. He’d never felt more relaxed than he did then. It was like they belonged there. Something about her was so calming that he didn’t want to go back to the castle just yet.
“Thank you,” she spoke softly into the quieting night. “For tonight.”
He wished he could kiss her.
Instead, he gave her hand a squeeze and said, “Anything you want, Princess. Just say the word.”

BOTW2 - A Return to Darkness
(I’ve never written fan-fic before in my life, but all of these new BOTW theories and art inspired me to write this idea out. Special shout-out to @autumn-sweet-fae for the idea about Link’s ability reset! [x])
The series of caverns beneath Hyrule Castle seemed to be a source of boundless interest and excitement for Zelda, who stopped to document every carving and luminescent gem with the Sheikah slate no matter how small or difficult to reach. Link felt the absence of Revali’s Gale acutely whenever Zelda lamented being unable see the carvings far above their heads, but Revali and all of the other Champions had long since moved on, taking their gifts with them.
The two Hylians, displaced in time, had initially begun exploring the newly uncovered cave system as a way to escape the realities involved in rebuilding a kingdom. Soon enough, though, it became obvious that there were important secrets tucked away beneath the ground, perhaps even older than the Sheikah. Zelda hoped that uncovering these secrets could help in the rebuilding process, and so their short, escapist trips had turned into full-fledged expeditions.
They had recently discovered a steeply descending path near an entrance by the Great Plateau. Although Zelda continued to record her findings as diligently as always, they both felt a strange sense of disquiet as they descended into the darkness. Though they had been seeking answers to their questions for months, this was the first time they were afraid of the response.
When they discovered Ganon’s mummified corpse, things began happening very quickly.
Perhaps it was the presence of all three people of legend in one space that activated the chain of events. Within moments of the Hylians stepping into the final cavern, the earth began to shake and malice oozed from the floor. A glowing turquoise light leapt like lightning from Ganon’s form to Link’s arm, which he had instinctively extended to shield Zelda as stalactites and whole chunks of the ceiling rained down around them.
The shock of the light touching his skin—no, entering his skin—was nothing compared to the acidic burning of malice as the slime piled up on itself and swarmed the glowing arm, as though with a single-minded purpose.
Zelda screamed his name over the thundering of stone, knuckles white on her sword grip. Neither of them had seen anything like this, and neither knew how to combat it. Link stepped backwards, tearing at the ooze and trying to keep it away from his princess, noticing how it seemed to be exclusively targeting him. Afterwards, he would remember that small step with piercing regret. If he had only been closer, if he could have moved a little faster…. The ground collapsed beneath Zelda’s feet. Link lunged forward, desperate, reaching—their fingers brushed, and then she was gone.
Link could barely process anything. The earthquake had stopped. Ganon’s corpse had disappeared into the yawning black mouth that now filled the cavern, the same mouth that had eaten the only person who mattered to him in this world. The malice had somehow shriveled and sunk into his arm along with the strange light, and now a black rot was crawling up towards his shoulder, rendering the whole limb dead. He was unable to handle a glider or climb down into the hungry darkness, and the gnawing, unnatural pain in his arm was enough to drive him to his knees.
Slowly, painfully, and with an involuntary cry of agonized frustration, he tightened a belt around his upper bicep in an attempt to stem the creep of malice and stumbled up the debris-filled path to the surface.
When he finally emerged into the calm summer evening, his horse startled and shied at his approach, registering the scent of his arm as a corrupted enemy. Nearly delirious with pain, fatigue, and fever, Link still managed to soothe it, leaning his face against its neck and pretending that it was sweat running into its fur. He could barely stand to look at Zelda’s beautiful horse, but forced himself to clumsily fasten its lead to his own horse’s saddle.
But where to go? His champion allies were gone. The castle was still largely abandoned, the guardians erratically active and monsters as yet un-eradicated. The closest source of help was days away, and the slate had been with Zelda, so there would be no teleporting.
Purah’s not going to be happy about this. He thought nonsensically, and set his horse’s nose towards Hateno Village.
***
He did his best to cling to the horse’s mane, but as the familiar village appeared in the distance, his sense of relief overpowered the adrenaline that had kept him going for the past several days. Slowly, gently, darkness clouded his vision and he slipped from his mount’s back, falling into the ditch on the far outskirts of Hateno Village. The horses, exhausted themselves, barely registered the change in weight and continued on to the place where they knew that apples and good hay could always be found.
The children of the village, who had frequently begged rides from Link and clung to him on past visits, immediately recognized that something was wrong when they spotted the tired creatures trudging up the cobbled street. They ran to the eccentric scientist up in her tower, and joined Symin, her chief researcher, in a frantic search of the area. The sun was beginning to set when they finally found the unconscious Link. Symin scooped the small hero up in his arms, a knot of fear in his stomach, and carried him to his lady.
***
Link opened his eyes to sunshine streaming through a window, birdsong, the warm scent of hay and machine oil. The agonizing, corrupted, wrong pain in his arm had faded, but in its place was a weak and draining numbness. Remembering Zelda’s fall, he sat up with a gasp, and immediately crumpled, spots swimming in his eyes, heartbeat rushing in his ears. As he panted, head between his drawn-up knees, he heard soft steps as someone came up the ladder to this bedroom.
“I would have thought you’d slept long enough the last time, Linky.” Said Purah dryly, but not unkindly. “You’re really pushing my skills here. I had to research tech that hasn’t been used since the Zonai disappeared.” Link slowly lifted his head to look down at his arm. The rot was still there, shriveled black skin stretched over tendon and bone. Two things were different: there were engraved metal bands that clasped his arm from wrist to bicep, softly buzzing with energy, and there was a Sheikah emblem tattooed on the back of his blackened hand.
Purah remained uncharacteristically quiet, letting Link take in the changes, before starting up again to enthuse about the tech. “I’m going to keep optimizing it, of course. It’s wildly inefficient at the moment but I needed to get something on you or you’d lose the arm. Currently the runes are drawing directly from your energy just to stop the procession of the corruption, but I plan to improve that. As such I think it’s going to take you a while to get your strength back. I saw you lost your slate—“ her voice hardened in sudden anger “—but until you get it back I’ve got plans to add some capabilities to this tech in the meantime.”
Link finally found his voice. “Zelda.” he croaked, his defeated, exhausted gaze rising to meet Purah’s.
Her face softened. “We were worried why she wasn’t with you, why you were in that state. We sent some people to the tunnels, but they haven’t returned.”
The half-hoping, half-pleading look in Link’s eyes disappeared immediately, replaced with stubborn determination as he placed his feet on the floor and rose, legs visibly shaking.
Purah sighed, as though she had expected this. “You’re in no shape to go after her now. Zelda has held her own in this world for longer than you have, and she can handle herself. You, on the other hand, need to build your strength back up or you’ll be knocked over by the first bokoblin you meet. Or the first gust of wind.”
Link ignored her, taking slow and unsteady steps towards the ladder. “Link, your clothes!” She yelled after him in exasperation just as he missed the second rung and disappeared from view. A loud thud and a startled exclamation from Symin rose back up through the hole in the floor. “Hylia, why me?” She asked the air.
***
Link glared at the straw monster in front of him, sweat running into his eyes. It took all his effort to raise the stick in his right arm, the numbness of the limb and unfamiliar weight of the tech making every movement sluggish. He had been hacking at the doll for hours and yet it looked fresher than he did.
Symin watched from the window, sipping a cup of tea. “Should we stop him?” He asked. It was several weeks now since the scrawny hero had picked himself up off the floor and legged it out the door, only to collapse less than halfway down the hill. Since then, he had spent every waking moment making his best attempt at training.
Purah didn’t glance up from her book. “The man just lost everything he cares about for a second time. In many ways he’s worse off than he was when he woke from the century’s sleep. At least that time he had his strength, if not his memory. Let him work things out his own way.” Unspoken between them was the knowledge of reports from central Hyrule that the castle was once again filled with malice and making the ground tremble day and night. Link had not told them the details of his encounter, nor indeed spoken hardly at all, but his grim determination said more than enough.
Only a few days later, the morning after Purah had successfully implanted the first upgrade into Link’s arm, Symin slammed open the door to her tower study, panic and worry twisting his face. “He’s gone! Link’s gone!”
Purah turned to gaze out her window. She didn’t look surprised, but her normally boisterous personality was briefly extinguished. She shook herself and turned back to her notes with renewed vigor. “He’ll be back. Let’s be ready for him.”

chapter 8: a cruel realization
Zelda prayed.
And prayed.
Despite all of her praying, she was never sure if she was even doing it right.
Was there a specific way to do it? Was she doing it wrong? Did she even have the blood of Hylia coursing through her veins?
An icy jolt staggered up her body and she violently shivered in response, rippling the water around her. It was the first movement in hours among the emptiness that surrounded her thoughts. She shot her eyes open, exhaling sharply out of her nose, finally aware of how much her body was shaking. The reflection of the full moon in the water wavered in front of her, bright and distracting, reminding her that another day would soon rise—and how this one was wasted. She squeezed her eyes shut once more.
Anger gripped at the edges of her mind as it hung on to the last strings of her attempted, desperate praying. But the last couple of hours felt like she had simply been begging, not praying.
Begging for something, anything, a flash of light, a vision, just… anything.
And yet, despite it all, despite everything, there was no revelation.
Was there supposed to be one? She didn’t even know.
Link shuffled behind her, his sword scraping against the stone floor just enough to remind her that he was there. She had been so absorbed in her thoughts that she had momentarily forgotten she wasn’t alone. She shuddered again, though this time, an involuntary hiss escaped between her chattering teeth. She held on to the feeble hope that he didn’t hear it, but every movement she emitted never seemed to evade him. He shuffled again, drawing Zelda out of her ruminating thoughts even more. She convinced herself that he was planning to retire for the night—except, she heard a loud splash.
The sound completely withdrew her from the depths of her mind.
She swiveled back, pressing her hands against her chest, as she watched Link push through the water toward her.
“Link what are you—“ She flinched as his warm hand cupped her cheek—so warm that it stung her.
“You’re freezing, Princess.” A stern look passed across his features—a semblance to a frown, with eyebrows knitted up in concern. His typically guarded eyes softened just a little.
“I—“ Zelda hesitated, sighing as she dropped her shoulders. “No. I’m… I can almost hear the Goddess. I swear it.” She cursed herself for sounding so shaky, but regardless, she turned back around, moving away from his hand. She tangled her fingers together even tighter than before.
This was the first time he had ever tried to stop her, and it irked her. Itched under her skin, like… like he was giving up on her. And out of everyone—she didn’t want it to be him.
The thought of it pricked her eyes irritably.
“Please,” he whispered, delicately placing a hand on her pale shoulder. She shivered at his touch, curling into herself. He was always soft spoken, but not like this; pained and pleading.
“I’ll stay here even if the Goddess takes me,” she insisted sharply. The cruel words had slipped out without much thought, and only when she said it did she realize how grim it sounded.
But somewhere, deep within her, she knew those words rang true.
“T-That’s not what I meant,” Zelda stammered immediately after. She opened her mouth to explain, but she couldn’t find the energy to somehow mask the truth she had just spoken, so instead, her words were left hanging in the air between them like a ticking bomb.
“You should go get some rest,” she said instead, quietly over her shoulder. Once again, Zelda brought her hands together, closing her eyes. His hand slipped from her, and along with it, the warmth she craved. As the cold settled into her skin once more, she pressed her clasped hands to her lips.
It was hard to concentrate when she could still feel his presence directly behind her, and the heat from his body distracted her.
She waited for him to leave.
But he didn’t.
Zelda glanced back at him, her eyebrows furrowed together in confusion. His head was bowed down, with lips drawn tight. She couldn’t see his eyes. Fighting against the weight of the water that dragged down her dress, she turned around to face him. “Link, did you hear me?” she asked, bringing her hand to his face.
Suddenly, his hand reached up toward her extended arm and grasped it tightly. Zelda jumped at his sudden movements, alarmed. He glared up at her, and a chill ran down her spine as their eyes locked.
She had always thought that the coolness of his eyes never resembled who he actually was, but this time, they reflected the true color of how he seemed at that moment—icy blue.
Before she could react, he was already pulling her back toward dry land.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Zelda asked, baffled and dumbfounded.
His grip never loosened, even when she was completely out of the water, dripping wet. She stared at the back of his head as he simply stood there, his hand around her arm only tightening with each breath he took. It was unlike him to be as distant as he was—and even more so that he wasn’t responding to her. She used her free hand to touch his arm, barely brushing his skin, but that simple act seemed to snap him out of his thoughts. Upon contact, he immediately let go of her, as if her touch shocked him.
“I’ll…” he trailed off, his back still toward her. He shook the hand that had held her, as if he was trying to get rid of something. “I’ll go make a fire. Stay there.”
And then he was gone before she could respond, past the stone entry way that led to the forest outside of the Spring.
Zelda glanced back at the statue that gazed down upon her with its taunting smile. She debated whether or not to dip back into the freezing waters until she noticed the light red mark on her skin, where he had grabbed her.
The cool paleness of her skin only accentuated it, leaving her numb.
------------------------------------------------------------------
They didn’t speak when he came back, and he wouldn’t look at her, no matter how long she stared him down. He had given her his spare clothes, a simple long sleeve tunic and loose pants, so that she wouldn’t be dripping wet for the night. When she sat down across the campfire, he held out a blanket for her, still avoiding her piercing gaze.
“Thank you,” she said, eyeing him.
He turned around.
Zelda deflated a little, frowning. She wrapped it around her shoulders tightly, snuggling in its warmth for a moment before scooting closer to the fire. As her hands gripped at the fabric, she realized it was the same blanket from the time they were on their way to Zora’s Domain, by the pattern on it. She ran her fingers against the embroidery, finding comfort in its stitches. Link began tossing some branches into the fire, and as it grew larger, Zelda could finally feel her fingers and toes. She thought he’d stop after the fifth tree branch, but he kept tossing them in at a pace that, quite frankly, concerned her.
His blue eyes reflected the warm glow of growing fire—glinting, dimming.
“Link,” Zelda whispered behind the fabric of the blanket, but he didn’t respond. “Link.” She tried again, louder this time, pulling the covers down from her nose. His name on her tongue only resulted in a twitch of his mouth. He was resting his chin on one hand as he continued to lazily toss more branches into the fire with the other.  “Can you please say something?” she asked gently.
His face was blank. He was always good at doing that when he really wanted no one to know what he was thinking.
“What do you want me to say?” he muttered back. There was an edge to his voice that she’d never heard before—was it… anger?
Did she make him mad? He never got mad. At anybody. He never did. No one, not even the Champions, the only other people he’s ever opened up to, had seen him get mad.
Sure, he got annoyed, but mad?
“I just—“ Zelda paused before the panic in her voice could come out. “I just want to know what you’re thinking,” Zelda said, keeping her voice steady. He stopped moving, and his blue eyes darted to her again. The only sound between them was the crackle of the fire, which he had overfed to the point where it was unnecessarily large and overbearing.
They stared at one another—and for the first time in a long time, he looked like a stranger.
Zelda realized how spoiled she had been all those times where he laughed or frowned at her now that she saw that blank look of his. She searched his face for something—anger, annoyance, rage—but there was nothing. She would’ve preferred anything.
Anything but that slack expression.
“You want to know what I think?” He ripped his gaze from hers, and for some reason, it felt like he had pulled away from her. Zelda tightened her grasp on the blanket, willing her hands to stop shaking. He returned his attention to the fire, poking at it. The edge in his voice was still there, and she hung on to it desperately, hoping that it would keep him from drawing further away than he already was. “You really want to know?”
“You know that I always do.”
When he didn’t continue, Zelda cast her gaze to the crackling fire, trying to find a reason for his aggravation. Their visits to the Springs were as they always were. The only difference was his odd quietness throughout the majority of this particular journey... but what she did today was what she had been doing on any other trip. So what had changed? Zelda scoured her memories for any bits and pieces of clues that she could fit together. The only thing she could really conclude was that he had become much more observant of her the past months. Or maybe she had simply imagined it, because she wanted to believe that he…
Zelda shook her head, letting the thought fall out before it could complete itself. Regardless, that knowledge didn’t help her in the situation at hand, because now it seemed like he couldn’t stand to even lock eyes with her for two seconds.
“I don’t know what I’ve done to upset you. Is it because you have to accompany me? I know that these trips are taxing, and that it’s been taking—“ Zelda stopped speaking once she shifted her eyes to him.
That blank expression of his had vanished, and was replaced by frustration. The fire reflected in his eyes grew brighter the larger the flames got.
“Link, the fire...“ Zelda warned quietly, and his hand paused midway, about to throw another stick in.
“I want you to stop beating yourself up,” he started, his voice strained. His eyebrows scrunched together as he opened his mouth again, the words flowing out quicker and smoother now. Louder even. “I want to see you smile and laugh like you mean it. I don’t want to touch your skin and feel it colder than ice anymore. Every single time you come out of that water, I can see the light in your eyes fading away.” He dropped the stick into the fire and didn’t reach for anymore. There was a pause, and the air around them stilled, holding its breath.
“I’m tired of not being able to do anything,” he admitted quietly, exhaling. With it, the tension in the air released as well.
Zelda scooted closer to him. When she was able to get a better look at his face, she realized how weary he seemed, with those dark bags under his half lidded eyes. She opened up the blanket, inviting.
“I’m cold,” she said. He didn’t budge an inch. “You said you’re tired of not being able to do anything?” Zelda lifted an eyebrow. “You can keep me warm.”
His face flushed red and he turned away from her, staring down at his hands. “That’s not what I meant.”
Zelda pursed her lips, trying to find words of comfort, but her attempts were fruitless. The only thing she could provide him was something that he had been constantly giving her—honesty.
“Link, you know I need to do this.” She dropped her arm, sighing. “I can’t just… stop trying. I will bend and break if that’s what it takes to get this sacred power—it’s something I cannot avoid. Regardless of what becomes of me.”
He looked pained at her words, but they were true, and she wouldn’t hide it. She never did to begin with. She hesitated with her next words—words that she only kept floating in her own thoughts, but maybe voicing them to him would help him understand.
“But I’m glad that you and the other Champions are here with me,” she said, pausing. If she wasn’t going to voice this now, she wasn’t sure she would ever get the chance to. “It gives me strength. It helps me move forward. And you… you…” Zelda trailed off, fidgeting with a piece of fraying thread on the blanket. The fact that he existed in the world spread an unfathomable joy within her, and she felt fortunate to be alive at the same time as him. To simply be connected with such a soul as beautiful as his filled her with more strength than the sealing power would ever be able to give.
But that was too much—an honesty too raw—for her to admit. She couldn’t indulge in such… distracting truths. Not now.
At her hesitance, he looked up at her, with a mix of curiosity and longing.
Longing?
No, maybe it was she who looked upon him like that, but she couldn’t look away from him, even after the painful realization that hit her.
You love him, a little voice whispered to her. It almost sounded like a soft exhale, as if it was relieved to tell her.
“Thank you, Link. I will always be grateful for you, in all of our lifetimes. That will never change.” She offered him a slight smile—a smile to let him know that he was not alone. And she hoped it would be enough to ease his pain, even if it was only brief, for it was all she could give in that moment.
He stayed quiet, but she didn’t find discomfort in the silence this time as they both gazed at the warm fire.
As it began to die down, he tugged at her blanket, prompting her to come toward him. His blue eyes shimmered like the shallow waters of a clear sea as she drew closer, and she opened her arms once more, inviting. Months of pressure and tension peeled off of her when his skin met hers, as he laid his head in the crook of her neck. She placed her cheek against the top of his head, finding comfort in the sound of his soft breathing. Her eyes stayed focused on the flicker of the firelight.
She didn’t say anything when she felt warm water dribble onto her skin, dripping down her collarbone. Instead, she tightened the blanket wrapped around them, pulling him closer, and gently shut her eyes.

The gif reaction! 🤣
Okay, so in my AU (They were made for the BOTW AU, but I could make a version for AoC as well.) they have two kids. Rylo and Prestille. (One day when I can draw humans and kids I will draw them, but for now have a little description of how they look.) I wanted the tradition of every female being named Zelda to be broken because let's be honest, that's just weird..
I made their middle names references to "Wild" and "Silent" (As in the flower, silent princess.) So their full names are "Rylo Wilde Hyrule" and "Prestille Silant (Pronounced more like sil-lahnt.) Hyrule"
(I had to use the royal family's last name because Link doesn't have one. I should make one up sometime.).
Rylo is the oldest, they're twins but he was born first. He has his mom's eye color and his hair color is in between Link and Zelda's hair color.
Prestille has Link's eye color and her hair is a couple shades lighter than Link's.
I was thinking that, depending on how BOTW2 ends, they would have powers carried over like the (Most likely) Zonai magic.
Prestille would probably have the sealing power despite not being named after her mother. I feel like naming them the same name over and over isn't necessary and it just started as a rumor that the royal family listened to. (She probably won't be needing to use it in her lifetime, but at least it'd be carried over for any other future Zeldas.)
Rylo and Prestille are friends with some other OCs that I haven't mentioned (That's a whole other ask for another time.). I will say that they are Zoras though.
Link, Zelda, Rylo and Prestille live in Link's house in Hateno, that's where the twins were born.
One day they found a stray Hylian Retriever puppy and brought him to Link and Zelda. Zelda tried telling them that they can't keep a pet right now, they proceeded to use their own puppy eyes and even Link joined in because IT'S A PUPPY! Zelda eventually gave in and the kids got to name the puppy. Since they're kind of addicted to sweets, and the puppy was a little sweetheart they decided to name him Cupcakes. He wears a little red bowtie instead of a collar. He follows them everywhere.
Their favorite foods are (Like I said before.) sweets. So the fruitcake, monster cake, etc. Actual meals they like though are omelets, cooked meat, soup and apples. They LOVE apples. (Who doesn't stop to pick all of the apples in BOTW?) So they aren't as big of a glutton as Link, but if you place some food in front of them they will most likely eat it.
Link and Zelda have an adopted daughter too. There was an ambush in a Rito settlement (Built after BOTW and BOTW2) and when Link arrived there seemed to be no survivors. He found an egg (I mean, I assume they lay eggs like normal birds. They are bird people after all.) that seemed unscathed and took it back because there seemed to be nobody else around. Zelda tells him to bring it to Rito village, but before they could it started hatching and whoops, now they have a baby Rito. They name her Veena. She looks like a pileated woodpecker. (We had them back home and they are big and so cool! They're like little raptors flying around.)
So now they have three kids and a dog to look after.
Paya babysits them when Link and Zelda have to go do some important stuff. Either by now she has left the village before or they drop them off at Kakariko for her to look after them.
The kids love her and always comment about how pretty, nice and cool she is. Asking her if she also has magic (Again, depending on how BOTW2 ends, they could possibly have the Zonai magic.) because they've been told about the Sheikah and their magic a little bit. Luckily they don't cause too much trouble for Paya.
Their favorite foods that she makes them are pumpkin stew and vegetable curry. (Yes, surprisingly they DO like some veggies. In fact, they only really eat them if she makes the dish.)
They LOVE the horses that Link and Zelda have. They like brushing their hair and they even get to go riding on them once in a while (As long as Link or Zelda is riding on the horse with them so they don't fall.).
That's all I have so far, but that's still a lot. 😅
so sorry for the late response!! i went to bed early last night and went straight to the office today and i just. have barely had time to breathe today djfhldk (i swear every time i finish scanning one folder i return to my engineer's office to find two more in its place lmaO)
but!!!!! aaaaAAA!!!!!!! I love them so much!!! i absolutely agree that zelda would very likely break the "naming the firstborn daughter zelda" thing. because like. if ANY zelda would do that, it would be her. there's no way she would want to pass off that "curse" of a name to her own child. (THO also from what little i've seen people mention about TP Zelda, she might be willing to do the same as well but that's a whole different game i've never played lm a o)
they seem like such a lovely mix of both their parents i aDORE THEM!! and an adopted rito child i- I Am Emotional (AND what a pretty bird to be based on!!)
this is all just so lovely and sweet and i am! Experiencing An Emotion!!!! thank you so much for sharing with me!! i hope you draw them one day, bc you can dEF expect some fanart from me after you do :D
