Cover art by Tsuyoshi Nagano. “Star Wars: The New Essential Chronology,” Japanese edition. February, 2006.
The Japanese edition of “Star Wars: The New Essential Chronology” depicted a saga-spanning collection by artist Tsuyoshi Nagano. In the Christmas 2015 issue of ImagineFX magazine, Nagano had these memories, “I like Mara Jade a lot, so my drawings of her tend to be full body. Her costume was created using the comics as a reference. Grand Admiral Thrawn’s skin and Mara Jade’s lightsaber match, while Qui-Gon Jinn and Yoda’s lightsabers are the same green, to keep the painting engaging.”

Read This, Not That - Star Wars Edition
There's so many Star Wars books it can be hard to know where to start. Of course, you can just read everything if you want, but if you have limited time and can't decide between two similar titles here's my list of which ones are worthy of your time (and sometimes braincells). I make no distinction between Legends EU and New EU in this list because none of this stuff is one coherent continuity anyway (no matter what they tell you). Instead, I'm focusing on the characters and how good the stories are for that character. List is roughly in timeline order and divided by similar books about the same character.
Obi-Wan as a Padawan
Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray > Padawan by Kiersten White
Anakin and Obi-Wan
The Approaching Storm by Alan Dean Foster > Brotherhood by Mike Chen
Obi-Wan on Tatooine
Kenobi by John Jackson Miller > Obi-Wan: A Jedi's Purpose by Christopher Cantwell (comic)
Kanan Jarrus
A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller > Kanan Omnibus by Greg Weisman (comic)
Grand Admiral Thrawn
Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn > Thrawn by Timothy Zahn
Han Solo
Scoundrels by Timothy Zahn > Honor Among Thieves by James S. A. Corey
Boba Fett
Blood Ties, vol 1-2 by Tom Taylor (comic) > The Mandalorian Armor by K. W. Jeter
Princess Leia
Tatooine Ghost by Troy Denning > Razor's Edge by Martha Wells
Luke Skywalker
Heir to the Jedi by Kevin Hearne > Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster

Please join us in wishing a very happy birthday to legendary writer Timothy Zahn! Best known for bringing Mara Jade and Grand Admiral Thrawn into life as we know it today, he has become one of the franchise's most important creators.

I really love how there is a niche in the older Star Wars fandom that basically is just “Timothy Zahn was the best writer for Star Wars and we’re gonna WILLFULLY disregard everything made by Disney”

This is an updated version of the previous Chiss Eyes post I made a few weeks ago. In Rebels, there are additional details on Thrawn’s eyes which make them appear to have a “stippled” texture and a “shimmer” effect. I completely remade the main texture, to more closely reflect the design from Rebels, and I played around with the emission & normal maps to try to recreate these effects. As a result these look less “realistic” than the previous iteration, yet are more faithful to the official design.

I’m seeing many people feel that Thrawn isn’t portrayed as he is in the more recent canon novels (more pro-empire, less focus on the Chiss). Perhaps. However, this line sticks outs to me “the security of our galaxy” (including Chiss space). He knows that the Empire (or the Imperial Remnants) could be better at protecting the galaxy than the New Republic, hence the need to take the helm and reestablish imperial order. Some others are also pointing out that he says “long live the Empire” as opposed to something about the Chiss - but why would he want to bring attention to the Chiss? They’ve been isolated off in the Chaos and don’t need the rest of the galaxy trying to get there (plus their own possible civil war?). I still think this is our Thrawn from the EU/canon books and Rebels. Looking forward to this! May warrior’s fortune be ever in your favour!

Cover art by Munehiro Uchimichi. “Star Wars: The Last Command,” Japanese edition. May, 1993.
The Japanese edition of “The Last Command” boasted original cover art by Munehiro Uchimichi, featuring a bad-ass Mara Jade! Until recently, only sub-par thumbnails could be found online. I managed to track down a physical copy of the book and scan it, so we could all enjoy!
