A film is never really good unless the camera is an eye in the head of a poet.

I find these two secuences from ep 5 particularly compelling in terms of film directing.
From the first one it caught my eye the fact that Tim and Gerry weren't entirely out of focus. If the director had wanted the viewer to focus on the heterosexual kiss, the characters in the background should have been blurred. Only that the scene wasn't about the kiss between the cameraman and the makeup girl at all but about the two queer characters eclipsed by the unavoidable straight couple.
The second one, the painful bed scene, is surprisingly long and paused. It gives us the time to build our expectations and have them subverted. It begins with a very close shot of Dale's distraught expression. We know that there must be a man lying beside him but I would have never expected him to be recognizable. He could have been sleeping with the back turned to the camera so we would've never known his face. Although he remains a nameless hook-up, he's still treated with dignity. It makes you consider all the souls dancing in that bar, with fears and dreams no so different from Dale's probably. Also his sleeping pose, I don't think is random at all. It's languid and inviting like an improvised Endymion and it adds yet another layer of sadness to the already melancholic scene. It's like we are being told "look at what Dale is missing" as he leaves the frame and the bed, blinded by his own shame to the beauty of the possibility.
I'm just so excited for what Emma Freeman will bring to IWTV!

What is the difference between a Union and a Guild? Many major productions in film and television work with Unions, and Guilds. The primary difference is Unions create negotiations between workers and employers, and guilds negotiate standards, practices, quality, salary etc between it's guild members, but cannot offer other protections.
What is unique about joining the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employee (IATSE) from other unions? That they can work on Union and Non Union Projects, without penalty or permission
Name four ways a television, film or commercial director can get into the Directors Guild of America? 1.) Endorsements from 3 DGA members on Application. 2.) Working on a number of commercial projects that are considered for DGA approval 3.) Paying membership dues 4.) Approval by others of application by a council of others working in the industry in your role.
Can a DGA first assistant director automatically qualify to direct a DGA project? Why or why not? If you're already hired as director, you can be ushered into if a low project gets turned into an union production , plus payment of DGA union fee's
Name four ways to get into the DGA as an Assistant Director?

The image in the mind’s eye. For me, it’s where the obsession began. It’s what keeps me going, it never fails to excite me. Because you take one shot, you put it together with another shot, and you experience a third image in your mind’s eye that doesn’t really exist in those two other images.
- Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese on how he gets anxious of how he sets up a frame in a shot. The funniest part is mentioning he woke in a sweat one night staying at Le Meurice hotel in Paris and not knowing about how to set up a shot.
He should have wandered down to Bar 228 in the hotel. Once a secret place, known only to Parisians, Bar 228 is one of the most elegant bars in Paris. Cocktails here are above all a shared passion. The bartenders are masters of mixology, able to create a new drink just for you, whether it's the famous Meurice Millénium with Cointreau liqueur and champagne or a Parisian twist on the classic Bellini.

Barry Sonnenfeld: Memoirs of a Neurotic Filmmaker
There are not many filmmakers’ biographies as entertaining and engaging (and sometimes crude) as Barry Sonnenfeld, Call Your Mother: Memoirs of a Neurotic Filmmaker. Before becoming a director of successful films like the Men in Black series and The Addams Family movies, Barry Sonnenfeld made a name as a DoP (Director of Photography). Sonnenfeld started in features as a cinematographer for his…
