Recently extinct species make me sad for all the usual and normal reasons (loss of life, biodiversity and unique life forms that experienced the world wholly uniquely and acted in it like no other, to name three), but a big thing that also makes me so sad is the forgetting that comes right after. Many endangered species are greatly ignored to begin with whilst alive of course, which is awful, but the way that extinction also causes us to forget. A species could’ve been so abundant a hundred years ago, people would’ve used a fish species or a tasty plant for food, or parents would’ve warned their children to not put a poisonous toadstool or insect in their mouth, a diver would exclaim, “Aha!” after emerging from the shallows holding an especially big bivalve, or someone making a species diary would sketch out a local bird or fasten a single flower to the page. But.. then the species goes extinct. It doesn’t exist anymore. None of these events, these actions happen anymore. Not with these species. The people who had these experiences dwindle out and they may not even realise that their experiences were among the last of their kind. And we forget.

#i was thinking about the new zealand greyling which was once abundant #the maori people used to fish it and use it for food #for generations upon generations this fish species was their normal #but now it is just gone #could they have guessed that this will happen? that their everyday food item would go extinct one day #i was also thinking about the atlantic sturgeon and how it went regionally extinct in the baltic #the old northern europe people knew sturgeons. heck we had them less than a hundred years ago still #it was a native fish just like any other. just like salmon and trout #now? no one talks about them #they are forgotten #we dont learn about them alongside the perch and the pike and the roach and the trout #they are a mystery of a time gone by here #and it makes me so sad… how quickly we forget. we shouldnt

This was a design that I made back in 2022 that received zero preorders at the time so it ended up scrapped besides the one sample I'd already ordered. I hope it'll finally find a good home after all this time 😊

Instrument of the Forgotten

Wondrous Item, very rare

“An old antique instrument that has seen decades of wear and tear. Despite the knicks and dents in the instrument, it doesn’t seem to have affected the sound and performance. The music produced by this instrument sounds as though it’s brand new.”

While attuned to this magic instrument you can cast the modify memory spell. Once you cast this spell you cannot cast it again until you finish a long rest.

You can use an action to perform with this instrument and cause those who can hear the melody to lose their memories. Anyone who listens to the song for at least 10 minutes must make a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or lose their memories for one hour. On a success they are unaffected and are immune to the effects of the song for 24 hours.

well in an attempt to procrastinate via experiencing the Delights of the Ceramics, I did several hours of kiln loading and ended up being an hour late to the thing I was supposed to go to, so now I'm just sitting in the cinema entirely by myself

#having a day full of mixed feelings #I suppose this is how life goes #I'm officially done with my Bachelor's degree as of today #obviously I'm proud of myself for the accomplishment and I was excited to be celebrated today #it was a long and difficult road and there were many times where I didn't think I'd live to see it through but I made it #I'm the first person in my family to get this degree and I was really looking forward to having today be my day #I had a really lovely morning and then things kind of waned #there were a few arguments. someone I spent the day with repeatedly made negative comments about something I care about #it felt awful. I know it was intended as more of a playful jab than anything but I directly asked for the comments to stop and they didn't #it especially hurt that it was a fandom thing and the person is so invested in their own fandoms yet they felt it fair to step on mine #even though I've never done that to them #then people kept talking over me and acted like I was wrong for trying to interject to finish my own sentences #also as I said in the last post I was deeply upset by how my family members spoke of my 12 year old cousin #she's just a kid and some of our close family members have such a nasty opinion of her. she's so young and she's had a rough few years #but it seems like no one except my brother and I are willing to give her any grace #I think everyone else has forgotten what it feels like to be a kid and feel as if the world is against you #on a more positive note. I had a decadent slice of chocolate cake. it was heavenly #unfortunately I was really too in my head to fully enjoy it #literally every day for 3 weeks I've been talking about the lunch I planned to have today #I knew exactly what meal and dessert I wanted from the restaurant. it's my absolute fave and isn't available at any other local restaurant #I was totally starving by time we got to the restaurant. we were out all morning and I ate a tiny breakfast in anticipation of this meal #when we got there we found out they removed what I planned to order from the menu. I was devastated. #I know it's stupid but like this was the one part of my day that I've had planned for MONTHS and I've been thinking about it for weeks #we had a 40 minute car ride where I mentioned my excitement for the food no less than 10 times so this crushed me #also I'm just really picky in general and typically restaurants only have one or two things I'm able to eat #I offered to just eat the dessert while everyone else ordered food because they were all really hungry too but they wouldn't allow it #we left the restaurant and I still feel horrible for walking out. if I had known the item was removed we wouldn't have even gone there #it happened so recently though and I feel dumb for not even thinking to check the menu online beforehand #so we went to another restaurant and I barely ate anything and now I have no appetite for dinner and I feel bad for ruining the afternoon #even though it's my day and my celebration and I feel like I'm entitled to a slight amount of unreasonableness
