i have only seen one frog all summer but i have eaten three whole watermelons

my son saw a hellbender salamander in the mountains last week. it was near a swimming hole that we have been going to since i was just a kid, their whole lives, and in all that time, we have only seen hellbenders twice before

bought this polaroid at an estate sale yesterday. based on what i could see in her house, she was a graphic designer who worked on product packaging, her nickname was bunny, and she loved her cats. thank you bunny

last summer everybody was talking about the joro spider invasion, but i think something around here figured out how to eat them, because there are a lot fewer of them and the ones i do see are a lot smaller

you know those boxcars that people hitch rides on in cartoons and movies and the office?

I have to offload those on my forklift, except I’ve avoided doing it for the entire 2 and a half years I’ve worked here because it’s horrifying

you have a concrete platform at the level of the boxcar, and a steel plate that we throw down between the platform and the boxcar that we euphemistically call the “ramp”

it is the most dangerous normalized activity I can possibly think of

the people who are good at it are the people who have just come to accept the danger and have the best possible technique down to muscle memory

it’s entirely possible to have a wheel hanging off of the ramp

you literally have to grab the frontmost units of whatever material is in there with the tips of your forks because of the impossible angle you have to turn to enter the boxcar, and then pull it out a bit so that it’s hanging off the unit below it, and just repeat to get a better and better grip on it until you’ve got it

and all of this would be entirely fine, if they paid us for the difficulty and danger of the job as well as technical ability and expertise you have to have to do it both quickly and safely

but we get paid just enough that we don’t quit (usually)

so

needless to say I’ve been applying elsewhere

but until something changes, I just have to cope
