It is interesting to note how Nam-soon and Ryu Shi-oh's journeys are twisted parallels of each other; both of them were ripped away from their homeland at young ages but grew up under different circumstances which influenced not only their personalities but also the decisions they would go on to make.
It appears that Shi-oh's obsession with strength stems from the belief that it's only the strong that survive while the weak are doomed, which had been drilled into him by the mafia. Deep down, he craves strength to overcome his vulnerability, which he deems a weakness and keeps concealed with the sole objective of safeguarding himself. Such is his desperation that he is willing to make do with an illusion of strength, even if it kills him in the process.
It's ironic when one considers that, in the first episode, Nam-soon had remarked that she would like a man she could protect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of her experiences, after arriving in Korea, Nam-soon learned the world is more jaded than she could realise. This allowed her to provide a more balanced yet honest answer to Shi-oh's question because even though she is committed to her assigned duty, she hasn't condemned him entirely in her mind........ yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do not entertain any hopes for this relationship's future in the coming episodes but I'll stick to the stand that it was a wasted opportunity to not have her develop a romantic interest in him and explore their conflicted equation in-depth. It wouldn't have mattered if they didn't end up together and have a happily ever after.
On a related note, the chemistry between the two of them is immaculate.

*inhales deeply*
There's spoilers ahead so, yeah, be careful.
This weekend episodes have actually broken my soul.
He didn't even need his feelings to be reciprocate, HE JUST WANTED TO BE WITH HER.
Dear writers, some things to ask, why so much screen time to second male lead? Why create such chemistry? Such backstory? (Spoiler alert: that will make us sympathize with the supposed villain) To just fuck*ing rip his heart out and pulverize it like Grandma with the cow bones, yes, just like that.
Let me get this straight, after having been raised in an environment of violence, pain and God knows what else for God knows how long, he falls in love. He experiences ✨feelings✨ ,he puts all his trust in her like never before, he shares his past and then he gets betrayed.
I swear I never seen someone cry so with so much meaning, feeling, with so much back there.
We made progress for the last (at least) five episodes TO JUST END IT IN A SINGLE ONE.
This could have been handled a lot better in a lot of ways and about a lot of topics that I could actually write an essay.
Let's begin the the main leads.
So, in order to have some sort of feeling about ML and FL loving eachother you need to put screen time ON them. Yeah, they support eachother, they have known far before Si Oh, they are funny and a lot of things more. They even kissed and very passionately, wow. Just one thing, Why didn't I even blink during that scene but found myself hitting the pillow and blushing when Si Oh did such mundane things as taking her home, opening doors for her, fixing her purse, hair, looking at her with those "I love you" eyes,👏feeling👏guilty👏about👏making👏her👏uncomfortable👏 with👏his👏feelings👏for👏her HELLO??, WAVING HER BACK WHILE HE WATCHED HER GO, SMILE EVERY DAMN TIME HE SAW HER?
I´ll tell you why. Because I know, thanks to you, that Si Oh was experiencing for the very first time what it's like to have human interaction that doesn't involve violence or having to be wary of everything and everyone all the time. He wanted to connect, to share his whole self, to be happy, to make her happy, to love and be loved. Moreover, I can't help just to feel happy for him, sad, angry, fucking rageous (not more than him, obviously).
Meanwhile, I barely know Hee Sik aka the male lead.
I remember seeing his mother once and I think that's what I understood about his private life. Sorry, I forgot about his deceased brother, that could have been a good topic to develop if it wasn't just mentioned once somewhere in the sixth chapter and left there to rot. Other than that, I know he is a cop, loves his cops friends and loves Nam Soon, also he is really loyal and good person.
Nice👍, very nice. But what else?? Or does the man just exist for his job and girlfriend? Even Shi Oh had some time to box being a drug dealer and full time whipped for her.
I'm just saying that you want me to suddenly dislike someone you took a considerable amount of time explaining but I have to like this good guy because you just pointed at him 👉🧍, and said, "here's the good guy, love him".
Sorry, I cant do that.
If you haven't noticed, you just made a character I fell obliged to sympathize.
If you wanted to make him evil and hot you should have just made him evil and hot.
It worked just as well with Jang Han Seok from Vincenzo.
Not have him have "REDEMPTION" written all over his face just to go with "Actually, no. He has no chance. 😃". It's, for lack of a better term, frustrating. (Absurd)
Instead, maybe you should have dedicated that screen time for the construction of the main leads relationship.
Oh, yes. Another thing since we are talking about the matter.
ML and FL relationship progress got weaker and weaker since she had started to spy on Si Oh. And then one episode was like "Oh, yeah, forgot to tell you, they are actually dating by now" Bom, a kiss. If I need a kiss to know they are in love, there's something going on back there. Something lacking.
Scenes of them in love: well acted, nice, cute, cool, okay. But it is like picking a random romance book and start reading it ten chapters ahead, they are in love, but how this did happen??? Last time I saw them, they were in a friends-and-some-more zone.
Where's the progress?
I know where is it. In the fake relationship, that it was being used just to turn Si Oh into a complete monster with probably not chance of going back.
"You have suffered a lot, yeah, I see. Anyway here's more pain. Suffer more and go cause some trouble because if not, there's, apparently, no plot"
Nice job.
I have been saying this and I will say it again, kdrama writers/directors are not ready for traumatized villains. They are afraid of them.

The Ryu Shi Oh treatment
Oh boy do I have a lot to say.
So Shi Oh is the CEO of Doogo right ?
When we first met him we saw that he was violent and he did not care about being physically violent.
His introduction scene came in episode 1 when he was in that bus thingy watching Nam Soon stopping the plane and being head over heels for her. He is fascinated by her
At the beginning we dont have much info about him : all that we know is that he is the CEO, the one dealing the drugs, violent and scared of nothing.
Then we see him doing his little business drug and wanting to find Nam Soon, then he do finds her.
The chemistry is there at their first scene. Shi Oh is fascinated by her and really likes her, he wants to know more. He is jealous as he sees her having fun downstairs with Hee Sik.
Somehow she comes to aid him at the office, he trust her, he is fascinated by her, by Tsetseg.
The more we see them the more we see a new side of Shi Oh.
Not only do we learn that he can be very tender, soft hearted, he worries about her, cares about her. He wants to help her get a citizenship, drive her home, wants to help her find her own home. He drives her home personnally, they have meals together. He helps her putting her bag well on her shoulder, helps her with her jacket.
She is the only person which can makes him smile.
He is interested in her, and truly cares for her.
Not only that but we also learnt about his past, which he is starting to share with her as well.
He was an orphan and was adopted into a russian mafia group, which truly mistreated him. He could not eat if he did not win hand fight, was clearly being beaten up. We are only starting to see of his abuse, physical and mental.
The fact that he is opening up to Nam Soon (Tsetseg) and explaining that for him friendship and love were never an option but that with her it is finally something he can imagine is so important.
He also confessed and is vocal about his feelings. He trust her, he wants her by his side.
We also saw them bonding multiple times, being away from their natal countries, missing something, Being honest and wondering what their places in society is.
We also saw her standing up for him against her mother. Which he deeply appreciated. She always cares about him and asks him whats wrong
There is this phrase that I really like that nam soon said that was about your place in life : wether someone is in the dark or in the light and she said that he was in the middle. Searching for his light.
We saw in the last two episodes that he keeps thinking about : Nam soon could be his light, he wants to be in the light.
He is trying his hardest to break free from the mafia and the drugs and the antidote are that door to freedom for him.
We also saw how deeply he was worried for her when she did not come to work, how worried he was that it was because of his confession, but also when he took the drug he asked her to stay away from him, why ? probably because he was scared that he could hurt her.
Now the problem is that we are getting at the end of the drama. Soon he will find out that Tsetseg the woman he loves and trust is not who she pretends to be. And he is going to be broken hearted.
I don't see a good ending for him, the most likely cases can be cut to 3 :
Mafia finds him first and kills him since he is disobeying them
The police will arrest him and he will end in jail
He dies during a police operation (I could totally see a scene where he dies in Nam-Soon arms thanking her for making him feel love and friendship for the first time in his life)
Now that is why I am mad. It is extremely unlikely that he will have a happy ending, that he will be with Nam Soon
Which to me is so unfair.
Yes he did hurt and kill people but he is a victim as well.
He has trauma, and a really heavy huge one. It is not a vilain which does it without reasons or only for his pleasure, he is doing it to free himself from the mafia and from his trauma.
What he definitely needs is a therapist. He needs to heal from the pain in his heart.
What makes it so unfair is that I know he is not gonna end up well, he will either die or end up in jail.
And I hates it.
I want him to be happy, to be at peace. His whole life was suffering and trusting no one.
And now that he finally trust and love someone he is gonna lose her. He is gonna lose everything.
I just wish that for once, he would be happy, he would be forgiven just like the girl who tried to kill Nam-Soon.
I wish that he could be with Nam-Soon and heal properly with his trauma.
All those scenes that shows his trauma and childhood is to make us feel for him, feel sympathetic. Only for what ? For them to kill him off (probably).
The message that will be send out will be that even if you have trauma and you start to heal from it, is that there is no way of healing, there is no way of being free.
Shi Oh deserves the hapiness, he deserves to be with Nam Soon.
And I know that he will not get it

not yet on the ryu shi-oh train?
to everyone unable to see the nam-soon x shi-oh, because of the:
red flags
"he tried to kill her mom!"
honestly, i get it. the main leads are vv sweet and they're building up to an ideal, healthy relationship. BUT, having said that, other than nam-soon going through personal growth and learning about the way the world works + capitalism (completely by herself, let me add), I don't see them undergoing any growth, or development together.
even do bong-soon, grew into her feelings and had a lot of development alongside min-hyuk, rather than just as her own person, and it added to the dynamic of the whole relationship.
the reason why ryu shi-oh would be such a good fit for nam-soon is because of the potential they have to help each other become better versions of themselves. [her naivity & his belief that only having strength can fullfill him]
+ about the murder attempt, it was terrible obviously, but from nam-soon's point of view, very few situations would truly make her feel uneasy, because of the faith she has in her strength (& her mother's strength), so even though she was worried – as a child who'd just found her mother – she was probably operating from a very different mindset.
in addition, when the mother, hwang geum-joo has completely forgiven the girl, hwa-ja for trying to stab nam-soon, (attempted murder basically, which is again downplayed because of the strength they have) i find it perfectly reasonable that nam-soon could find it within herself to forgive him and look past his misguided actions, if she so chooses.
speaking of, from nam-soon's point of view:
obviously, it is a terrible idea to believe that you can fix someone, or that if you stick around, they will somehow change – BUT there's a pretty clear distinction to make here – she has not chosen him yet, and she is not waiting for him, but he has already begun to want to be better for her, and changed an immense amount when it comes to how he acts around her, which (not that makes him a green flag), makes for a pretty healthy relationship, if they both come to be on the same page at some point, especially with how honest he is with her.
this series takes place in a fantasy universe, and because she has her superpowers, the power balance is tipped in nam-soon's favor, both physically, and when it comes to the power she holds over him.
so, technically, if she's able to forgive his...extracurricular activities, it really is her business who she ends up liking 👀 (dw, ik it's hee-sik endgame)
at this point, everything relies on the personal choices each character makes. Ryu shi-oh has already shown signs of looking within himself and being willing to open up to nam-soon about his past & be vulnerable, so the ball is in her court now, especially with the scene we've ended on in episode 10.

I'm sure that in the last episode of Strong woman Gang Nam Soon we'll see Bong Soon and Min Hyuk make a video game about Nam Soon, and she'll have the little gold wand as her weapon of choice.

This is so tragic. Mostly because I come from so many fandoms where there are a whole bunch of people creating work around plotline villains. Both as a direct effect of existing work and as headcannons. Its acceptable and encouraged.
But I see a lot of people here are like in no way should murderous villain get the girl. Which okay....fair.
I would like to reiterate, this is fiction. A villain can also be a likeable character. Here in Si-Ohs case it stems from the portrayal, that while he does vile crimes, he also sometimes has a soft side that is very apparent. He has a tragic backstory. People like the chance for morally grey or even black characters to be redeemed. In ficition. Its possible.
That being said. Nobody is wrong for wanting the female lead to end up with him. Its not something I'm particularly looking for but the possibilities of what it could have been is high. This could have been the epitome of a darker romance okay?? I stand by that.
And there is no moral high ground in disliking him or not wanting nam soon to end up with him. Saw another post about this that I agree with completely. If the writers wanted us to dislike Si-Oh, they shouldn't have written him the way they did. They should have made a character with absolutely no tragedy or qualities that people just couldnt like. They made him likeable. Because that is how it was intended. And even if it wasnt, I would still be here xD

God I have to say this.
EVERY CHARACTER EXCEPT THE MAIN ONE IS INTERESTING IN THIS DRAMA
I thought it was because I was biased to the previous version but no. She's annoying and kinda an ass. There's no care in any of what she does. Where we had bong soon terrified of hurting an innocent person we have nam soon just throwing people left right and centre.
I'm watching this for every other arc. This is so fucking disappointing.

At this point, all I can believe is in his redemption. Even if it seems impossible by now. And not the "tragic death while trying to do the right thing" it was enough with Jang Han Seo and I'm still angry about it. Because *inhales deeply* DEATH IS NOT REDEMPTION. Redemption is a second change. Redemption is actually live after having been surviving. It can mean a lot of things if its done right.
¿Is it difficult to earn? To write??
Of course it is, but is also possible. Death should not be either a requirement or an automatic fulfillment.
If a show truly want to redeem a villain, then it needs to be a process built up over more than just one episode, and one that shows the true depths of character for the antagonist in question. While it can be done well, in many cases, Death by Redemption ends up as either a waste of a good character and arc, or the problematic penance of people who have not done anything to earn true redemption.
In Si Oh's case...I see someone who thinks he needs to be strong and to get to that he will do anything. At first he saw Nam Soon just for her strength, he just saw immense power like he wanted to have. But then that power got a name, a personality an so. He. Is. Falling. I know he is and hard.
With fake and true lights thing he may have started to rethink again this whole situation. Maybe, just maybe. We are six episodes left and as someone may have said "Everything is possible in kdramas"
I also know they won't end up together *sobs* I freaking love the main couple, their relationship from the start was good and so real. I have nothing against them. But. There's just something about broken characters that drags me to them. No matter how fucked up they are, I literally just want to give them all a big hug.
Going back with the romance thingy, I keep my hope that someday, some writer will say
"you know what? This time the villain will get the girl and neither of them will die" it would be amazing, revolutionary, absolutely glorious.
I will have to wait, tho. For now, I still have to finish The Worst of Evil and and six more chapters of this one. Let's get it.
