I weighted about 330 and I'm 5 foot 7 ... tried everything so I got weight loss surgery a year or so later on September 26th the bariatric sleeve .. yesterday (exactly 3 months) weighed myself 248 !! I lost 82 pounds!!! My dietitian says she calculated that I'm losing 5 pounds a week. But remember y'all thin is not always healthy!! NOT QUITE A WIP WEDNESDAY
(more a snippet-of-random-depressing-plot-bunny Wednesday)
I read The Road by Cormac McCarthy last month and I haven't been able to get into any other book since then because it absolutely blew my mind with how raw and strong its prose was. I hadn't wept for a book in ages (well, more than a year, which given my tastes in literature for me is ages).
So of course, as it happens, this morning while I was on the bus going to work a flash came to me from the Force itself - what if it was TPM Obi-Wan and Anakin in a universe in which the war was already raging and Order 66 was somehow triggered while they were on Naboo?
So here it is. It's very heavily based on the first page of the book, so the sudden sparks of brilliant prose are McCarthy's, not mine.
Carry the fire
When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him. The Force dark beyond darkness and the days more bleak and hopeless each one than what had gone before. Like a galactic sarlacc opening its unfathomable maws to swallow stars and galaxies and all that was light. The far bright center of the universe dissolved into gastric juice of a hungry beast. His braid rose and fell on his chest with each painful breath. Unkempt and too long and there was none left to cut it.
He pushed away the heavy brown cape and raised himself up to a sitting position in his stinking and scorched robes and breathed in and out to find his center and his balance but there was none.
Only the sleeping child beside him and the promise of hope for the universe and the hopeless promise he’d made to a dying man.
In the dream from which he’d wakened he had wandered in the ice caves with the child leading him by the hand. The kyber chiming deep into the stone walls and its light shimmering on the watery surface of the rocks. Like pilgrims from a Temple fresco depicting a tale turned legend in the aloof passing of time. They had waded deep into the ice and come to an empty chamber so vast stars hung in its darkness. One loomed giant among the others and it was whiter and colder and dead. He had no words to console the child when he began to weep. Crouching there small and helpless before the end of all things. Cold in his heart, fire in his eyes. Neither of them knew how to help him. The child turned between him and the white star and then gave out a low moan and turned and lurched away and loped soundlessly into the dark.
With the first pale light he rose and left the boy sleeping and walked out towards the road and tried to see what came next after the forest. Looking for a flash of color or a tendril of smoke or the trail of a starfighter. Even with his binoculars he saw nothing but wood and dark green foliage and a spatter of dull gray sky.
It had been three weeks.
They were moving south towards a smaller spaceport. They had to steal a ship. There’d be no surviving the Purge here.
When he felt calm enough he tried again looking into the Force. Searching for a flicker of life. A familiar touch. A plea for help. Only the silence of weathered stone answered him. Everything turned to nothingness and his soul a barren land swept by a wordless wind. He wiped his eyes with his sleeve and scratched at the stubble of a beard. Then he just sat holding his lightsaber in his hands and watching the birth of a day no other Jedi had lived to see. He knew only that the child was his warrant. He said: If he is not the will of the Force then the Force wills nothing.
When he got back the boy was still asleep. He tucked him into his dirty brown cape and rummaged into their backpack for their plates and two ration bars and a canteen of water. He spread one of his tabards on the ground and laid everything out and then unclipped his lightsaber from his belt and laid it on the cloth and then just sat there watching the boy sleep. He watched the boy and reached out with his consciousness beyond the trees. This was not a safe place. The clones’ binoculars could sense life forms warmer than the trees.
The boy turned in the cape. Then he opened his eyes. Hi, Master, he said.
I’m right here.
I know.

My mom has been battling stage 3 pancreatic cancer and 2 days ago, she completed her 4th chemotherapy session. She has 2 more to go before they assess it to remove the tumor.
She was diagnosed on November 28, 2023. She began chemotherapy December 26, 2023 and was admitted to the emergency room later that day from complications. She was discharged December 29, 2023 and my family came down to Florida on December 30, 2023.
On her birthday, January 2, 2024, after her follow-up meeting with her oncologist. She was feeling defeated about how things had been happening since her diagnosis. She vocalized no desire to live in front of us (including my 12 year old daughter (her only grandchild)).
My family (my spouse, daughter & myself), at the suggestion of my spouse made the commitment to be her ongoing support system. This is so she could make whatever decision she wanted regarding how she chooses to proceed with her diagnosis.
I personally committed to split time between our 2 bedroom home in Durham, North Carolina & her 1 bedroom apartment in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to make sure we could commit to her health treatment planned as it began taking effect on December 26, 2023.
We did not request anything from anybody and agreed to take on the additional financial burdens it would place on us to fulfill this commitment, (despite knowing we weren't in the financial situation to do so).
We arranged things so my spouse and daughter could return to school in NC on January 8th. I stayed back with my mom for that chemo week. Since I'm a business owner with time flexibility, I would make the trips and stay with my mom throughout the treatment windows in Florida.
This agreement means renting a car for an one-way trip to North Carolina or Florida weekly (a $200-275 expense & 11-14 hours of travel time per trip). The first time we brought her up to NC ever, my spouse drove our car down to get us and then shared in the responsibility of driving back to NC. It cost us $250 in fuel and food for the trip. We realized it gave my mom & I more flexibility in travel days, saved on time spent on the road, and cost the same to just rent a car (Chevrolet Malibu) for each trip.
This agreement meant now sourcing food with all my mom's health dietary restrictions (from having a gastric sleeve) & her diagnosis dietary restrictions for 2 households. As well as me preparing most meals for both homes while I'm in and away from NC. In addition, replacing gluten with gluten-free alternatives in the diet. (A lot more coconut and almond based supplies). Cooking meals for a family of four that works and can be considered Keto-friendly and cancer friendly and while trying to stay under a budget of $300-$350 monthly.
Since we've implemented this plan to be her support system, all hell has broken loose in our lives. (My mom calls it just life lifing though).
On Martin Luther King weekend, began a school district wide issue in my Daughter's school system. Different staff began protesting and calling out of work (which we personally support their stances) due to significant pay discrepancies being communicated.
This immediately meant unreliable transportation for my daughter getting to & from school 25+ minutes away. My spouse teaches in a different school system 20 minutes in the opposite direction of my daughter's school, and we only have one car. Since she started middle school this year, their school school arrival times are the same. But her bus pick-up time solved the problem there. So there is now an ongoing possibility of him being late to work at his school daily.
On our first trip back down for treatment, it went perfect with the rental, until I realized after returning the rental car that I had lost my business cellphone inside of the rental car. (It hasn't been found by Budget's staff during cleaning and the car had already been rented out again less than 2 hours after being dropped off.) So I still have to pay to get that phone replaced.
This is compiled on top of this being my businesses' slow season and having no reserves to catch the $950 overhead in monthly expenses that comes from inventory space, business insurance, & hosting email domains, office assistant services & website. We only one future booking on the calendar and it's for a new build. January there was only $900 made. $300 had to go towards having to subrent out the job because it over lapped with chemo treatment and would cost twice as much to keep in-house with temp staff. $150 went towards repaying our transaction based capital funding loan from Shopify. $120 went towards getting 2 items of inventory for the second booking.
So I borrowed funds from something I couldn't afford to take from just to keep all of our inventory spaces secured.
My Chase credit card is over the limit by $140 and a payment is due today. My secure loan payment with Navy Federal is also due today and I don't have any of it. My business insurance payment of $200 is due tomorrow, and I don't have that either.
And the difference in the cost for our last car rental to come down for chemo week is still due back to the card I used for it. And I have to pay 200 for the car rental to go back up to NC Monday.
Then back in NC, this week on Tuesday, our only car's engine light came on. It was taken into our dealership on Wednesday morning to find out why. That diagnostic end up costing $250. We finally got answers Friday afternoon. Our car has 139k miles on it, and we're being told the engine needs to be replaced. It has been quoted $8k to have a used engine put into it or over $12k to have a new engine with a lifetime warranty put into our 2016 Chevrolet Cruze premier.
This car gets everyone to school and has been how my spouse has been supplementing his income working for the school system and parks & rec by doing Shipt. So now income has been reduced even more and expenses have drastically increased more.
MY business first official rental booking for this year took place yesterday, and that was supposed to be able to be delivered using our car. Since it's still in the shop, we had to book a last-minute $200 car rental for my spouse and daughter to fulfill the booking delivery yesterday and to be able to go back to do the rental booking pick-up today.
Emergency fund is pretty much exhausted after this week and the savings, too. Then today, with a little downtime, I learn that all my email payments were due on MLK weekend. This resulted in 5 email domains (3 important ones needed for tax filings) to be canceled by godaddy after 2 weeks of missing the payment notifications. I've had the email plan for almost 10 years, and it initially only cost me $14/month for all 5 emails. But because it was canceled and the package no longer exists, it cost me $29/month to have them reactivate and restore the 3 important emails or over $70/month to get them all reactivated. I only activated the 3 and paid it up until April for $59, so I don't miss its before filing taxes.
This week in Florida, my mom's cancer treatment visits started charging her a copay. Due to an error that recently took place on the backend by her health insurance. It's taking longer to resolve it with then despite them already seeing that it'san error in their coordination of benefits process. This week alone, we had to pay $325 in co-pays just to avoid the chemotherapy and white blood cell visits at the oncologist from being canceled by their office. The error is still causing a previous $200 outstanding balance to reflect on her account.
TODAY, it all became too much to hold in any longer. I have never had to face this many trials all at once while still having ongoing ones coming my way. My heart, mind & spirit is heavy right now. I need GOD to do something supernatural for my family in this season. In a way, only God can show up. I'm not broken. My faith isn't shaken. We're not going back on our commitment. Cancer won't defeat my family! We're breaking so many generational cycles right now. Cancer was just the catalyst to expedite the process.

I realised I never really talked about my experience and tbh when people ask me if I recommend the gastric sleeve I never say 'Yes, of course!' right off the bat. It's not as simple as that. The first few weeks are BRUTAL and I don't sugar coat it. The initial five days are horribly uncomfortable and you're in a lot of pain; your stomach is pumped full of air and you're throwing up bile & such for the next few days.
You don't eat anything or drink much at all in that time.
The strict liquid > pureed foods > soft foods > hard foods over a period of 5 months is tough af.
I went through moments of intense depression because even though people were telling me that I look so different, amazing, etc. I didn't actually feel anything had changed. I looked in the mirror and still saw the same person from before. But, of course, there are the great days of unbridled confidence and happiness that make the odd bad one worth it.
It's an entire lifestyle change and moving away from bad habits because your stomach is so much smaller and nutrition is the most important thing.
I'm finally at a point now where I can say it was the best decision for MYSELF. I'd never be like 'Oh do it' to someone because it is a life - altering decision and I had been sitting on it for a year. I give my honest account on what I went through and tell people that while it can be hard at times, it has been wonderful for me.
There have been highs and lows but ultimately, I'm glad I went through with it. I wasn't happy with who I was and I needed to change that. I am growing increasingly more happy in my body and plus I have a great smile now after years of still having baby teeth LMAO
I have no regrets ✌

It’s happening. Less than 12 hours from now, I’ll be arriving at the hospital and praying that everything will work out the way I want it to in order for me to have this gastric sleeve surgery.
This is something that I’ve been thinking about for several years. I did try to do a complete overhaul of my diet a few years ago, and I managed to lose 120 lbs in one year. And it felt amazing. But what didn’t feel amazing was when I realized that my main motivation for losing that weight wasn’t what I had spent a year very cleverly convincing myself it was. I had told myself I was doing it for my own health, but I wasn’t. My motivation was purely external and I was fantastic at lying to myself about it. And so when that source of motivation exploded in my face in a rather spectacular way, not only did I feel like complete shit and gain every pound I had lost back, but I added an extra 80 for good measure.
That was the darkest period of my life, the time I got closest to simply not caring if I just ceased to exist. Thankfully, I was able to pull myself out of that darkness, but it took a long time and a lot of hard work to unravel the trauma of what happened to put me in that dark place.
And now, just shy of 3 years later, I’m light years ahead of where I was then. At the beginning of this year, I found myself in a similar kind of dark place to the one I’d experienced a few years ago. But the biggest and most important difference was…this time it was almost entirely self-inflicted. I came to realize that I’d allowed myself to be a victim of other people’s bullshit for so long that I forgot how to fight for myself in the ways that really counted, my own mental and physical health. And through some other traumatic circumstances, I forced myself to take action, because I realized the consequences of doing nothing would ensure my death before age 40, and that was just not ok with me. It’s the first time in my life that I decided for myself, and myself alone, that I was worth more than that, and that I wanted to fight to keep myself alive and as healthy as possible to reach an age that in the past I figured I wouldn’t be likely to get to.
So here I am, after 5 months of working my ass off to get my mind and body in the best shape I can before going through with this surgery, and having lost 93 lbs in that time and dipping just below the weight I was at when I started my first diet years ago. It’s something I will be incredibly proud of for the rest of my life, no matter what happens going forward. I’ve committed to this journey, to this new life, to myself.
And now the rest of my life can begin. 💗

Best Bariatric Surgeons in Florida - Dr. Michael Choi
Assuming that you've at any point attempted to get fitter, you realise how disappointing and troublesome the cycle can be. An ever increasing number of individuals are going to weight loss medical procedures to assist them with carrying on with better lives, but the excessive cost tag actually holds up traffic for some. If weight loss medical procedure costs are an obstruction for you, figure out how you can pay for the operation so you can start zeroing in on a better future.
Click Here: Effects of Overeating on the Stomach
In reality, how much does a weight loss medical procedure cost?
In the event that you're exploring how to bear the cost of a weight loss medical procedure, health insurance coverage inclusion is presumably quite possibly the earliest inquiry at the forefront of your thoughts. Anyway, does protection cover weight loss medical procedures? It depends upon the conditions. However, even with inclusion, you might wind up paying a few personal clinical costs. Gastric detour medical procedure costs without protection can run impressively, contingent upon the kind of method you pick as well as your area. The following are appraisals of what you can hope to pay for various sorts of medical procedures, regardless of inclusion.
Gastric detour is a medical procedure, gastric sleeves scars 6 Without protection, the typical expense is $24,300.
Gastric sleeve medical procedure: Without protection, the expense is generally somewhere in the range of $17,000 and $26,000.
The lap-band is a medical procedure: The expense goes from $8,800 to $22,500 without inclusion.
The cost is between $20,000 and $25,000.
3 methods for getting help paying for bariatric medical procedures
While the costs of bariatric surgery can be high, even with insurance, a large number of people find ways to pay for them on a regular basis. When you consider what feeling amazing can mean for your way of life and future, the medical procedure frequently winds up paying for itself. Try not to allow expenses to remain between you and a sound future. The following are three assets you can use to get help paying for a bariatric medical procedure:
Government help for weight loss medical procedure costs.
The national government can help pay for systems for qualified patients under the Medicaid and federal health care programs. The two projects have qualification limitations, notwithstanding an application cycle and a holding period.
Medicaid gives health care coverage to low-income people and will cover gastric detour as a medical procedure in specific outrageous cases. Numerous prerequisites should be met for Medicaid to cover get-healthy plans and medical procedures, including clinical verification that you meet specific weight capabilities and have attempted different strategies to get in shape.
Government health care covers bariatric medical procedures for people who meet explicit models connected with horrible corpulence. You will, in any case, need to meet your deductibles before federal health care will pay, and you might be liable for copays for follow-up visits after your system.
Web-based fundraising for bariatric surgery costs
Sorting out some way to pay for a weight loss medical procedure without protection can be upsetting. By crowdfunding on GoFundMe, you can support your system in a place of refuge while lessening the disgrace of bariatric medical procedures for other people who need them. With dedicated client assistance and the security of the GoFundMe Assurance, you can typically receive your assets within 2-5 working days.
Noble Cause support for bariatric medical procedures
The weight loss medical procedure Groundwork of America is the leading non-profit organisation dedicated to assisting individuals in bearing the cost of their methodology. The establishment raises assets to give a medical procedure help that will conceal up to 90% of a certified weight reduction system. The following are a portion of the requirements to apply:
You should have a reference from your specialist.
You are either uninsured or denied inclusion, or the methodology isn't covered by your protection.
You should agree to fund-raise for 10% of the cost of the financial help for weight loss surgery.

A Brighter, Lighter Future: The Journey of Weight-Loss Surgery
Embarking on the journey of any surgery to help lose weight is a transformative decision for those grappling with obesity and seeking a sustainable solution for a healthier lifestyle. This comprehensive exploration will guide you through the phases of considering, preparing for, undergoing, and living after weight-loss surgery, shedding light on what to expect and how to navigate each step for the best possible outcomes.
Tumblr media
Step 1: Considering Weight-Loss Surgery
Understanding Your Options
Before taking any steps, it's crucial to understand the different types of weight-loss surgeries available, including gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. Each procedure has unique benefits and risks, tailored to different medical needs and weight-loss goals.
Evaluating Eligibility
Weight-loss surgery isn't for everyone. Candidates typically have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 or higher with serious health conditions related to obesity, such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. Consulting with a bariatric surgeon will help determine if surgery is a viable option based on your medical history and health status.
Step 2: Preparing for Surgery
Medical and Psychological Evaluations
Successful surgery requires thorough preparation, including comprehensive medical and psychological evaluations to ensure you're physically and mentally prepared for the surgery and its aftermath.
Lifestyle Adjustments
Patients often need to undergo significant lifestyle adjustments before the surgery. This may include dietary changes, quitting smoking, and starting an exercise regimen. These adjustments help reduce surgical risks and prepare the body for a quicker recovery.
Step 3: Undergoing Surgery
The Procedure
The specifics of the procedure will depend on the type of surgery chosen. Most weight-loss surgeries today are performed using minimally invasive techniques, which can lead to shorter recovery times and less discomfort.
Hospital Stay
Post-surgery, you'll typically spend a few days in the hospital under observation. This period allows the medical team to manage pain, monitor for complications, and ensure that you can perform basic activities and consume liquids.
Step 4: Post-Surgery Recovery and Adjustment
Short-Term Recovery
The initial weeks after surgery focus on healing and adjusting to new eating habits. Patients will follow a strict diet starting with liquids, progressing to pureed foods, and then to solid foods as tolerated.
Long-Term Lifestyle Changes
Long-term success depends on adhering to dietary guidelines, maintaining regular physical activity, and regularly attending follow-up appointments. Support groups and counseling can also be crucial in adjusting to new lifestyle changes and maintaining weight loss.
Monitoring and Managing Complications
While modern surgical techniques reduce risks, complications can occur. Common issues include nutritional deficiencies, which can be managed through dietary supplements and regular medical check-ups.
Step 5: Embracing a New Life
Achieving and maintaining weight loss after surgery requires a lifelong commitment to healthy eating and regular exercise. The surgery is not a cure; rather, it's a tool to help reduce weight and improve health. The real success depends on using this tool effectively by making consistent, healthy choices.
Conclusion
The journey of weight-loss surgery is about more than losing pounds; it's about gaining a healthier, more active, and fulfilling life. With the right preparation, support, and personal commitment, weight-loss surgery can be the first step towards a brighter, lighter future. Each phase of the journey brings its own challenges and rewards, requiring a comprehensive approach to ensure the best outcomes for health and well-being.

Understanding Bariatric Surgery
Bariatric Surgery For Weight Loss in Delhi also known as weight-loss surgery, is a surgical procedure performed on individuals with severe obesity to help them lose weight and improve their health. It is considered a last resort after attempts at diet, exercise, and medication have proven unsuccessful.
There are several different types of bariatric surgeries, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Here are the most common types performed in Delhi:
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB): This is the most commonly performed bariatric surgery worldwide. It involves creating a small stomach pouch and rerouting the small intestine to limit food intake and absorption.
Sleeve Gastrectomy: This procedure involves removing a portion of the stomach, resulting in a banana-shaped sleeve. It restricts food intake and reduces hunger hormones.
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band (LAGB): An adjustable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a smaller pouch. The band can be tightened or loosened to control food intake.
Benefits of Bariatric Surgery

Navigating the Path of Revisional Surgery: Renewed Hope for Bariatric Patients with Dr. Shahsnak Shah
In the intricate journey of battling obesity, bariatric surgery often emerges as a beacon of hope, offering a transformative path toward healthier living. However, for some individuals, the road to sustained weight loss may encounter unexpected twists and turns. In such cases, revisional surgery, or redo surgery, emerges as a pivotal opportunity for renewed hope and enhanced outcomes.
Understanding Revisional Surgery
Revisional bariatric surgery encompasses a range of procedures undertaken following primary weight loss surgery. The reasons for revisional surgery vary, but commonly include inadequate weight loss or weight regain over time. For instance, in cases where the results of primary lap-band surgery fall short or the band is poorly tolerated, removal of the band coupled with simultaneous gastric bypass or gastric sleeve surgery may be performed.
Despite the challenges, it's important to recognize that the majority of weight loss surgery patients experience significant benefits, including sustainable weight loss, improved control of chronic illnesses, and enhanced quality of life. Surgery remains a vital and effective treatment option for morbid obesity, offering hope and care to those who might otherwise face limited alternatives.
The Complex Nature of Revisional Surgery
Revisional procedures are inherently complex, requiring surgical precision, nuanced understanding of anatomy, and careful consideration of individual patient factors. At our practice, led by the esteemed Dr. Shashank Shah, we perform 40-50 revision bariatric surgeries annually, with most being safely conducted laparoscopically, even after prior open surgery. Dr. Shah brings not only exceptional surgical skills but also a compassionate approach to patient care, ensuring that each individual receives personalized attention and support throughout their journey.
Each case demands meticulous evaluation, including a detailed history of weight loss progress, eating patterns, and any adverse outcomes following the primary procedure. Before embarking on revisional surgery, additional investigative measures such as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and radiography are employed to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan. It's essential to manage expectations, as weight loss following revision surgery is typically slower and more modest compared to primary procedures. A loss of around 50% of excess weight is often considered satisfactory in these cases.
Identifying Factors Influencing Surgical Outcomes
Understanding the factors contributing to suboptimal surgical outcomes is crucial in guiding the decision-making process for revisional surgery. These factors can be categorized as patient-related, surgeon-related, or procedure-related.
Patient-related factors encompass variations in biological response to surgery, lifestyle adherence post-surgery, and the influence of medications on appetite and metabolism. Addressing these factors may involve lifestyle modifications, medication adjustments, or substance abuse counseling to optimize outcomes.
Surgeon-related factors acknowledge the potential for technical errors in the primary procedure, which may manifest months or years later as weight regain or complications. Dr. Shah's expertise ensures that every aspect of the surgical process is meticulously executed, minimizing the risk of complications and maximizing the likelihood of successful outcomes.
Procedure-related considerations acknowledge the inherent limitations of certain weight loss procedures over time. Dr. Shah's comprehensive understanding of evolving surgical techniques and advancements allows for proactive intervention and improved long-term outcomes.
A Journey Towards Renewed Hope
In conclusion, revisional bariatric surgery represents a journey towards renewed hope for individuals facing challenges in their weight loss journey. With Dr. Shahank Shah at the helm, patients can rest assured that they are in expert hands, guided by a surgeon who combines exceptional skill with unwavering compassion. Each revisional surgery is a testament to resilience, collaboration, and the unwavering commitment to transforming lives for the better.

Bariatric Surgery Process
Pre-operative Phase
Before undergoing bariatric surgery, patients undergo a thorough evaluation, including medical and psychological assessments, to ensure they are suitable candidates for the procedure.
Surgical Procedure
During the surgical procedure, the surgeon modifies the digestive tract to restrict food intake and/or reduce nutrient absorption, depending on the chosen bariatric technique.
Post-operative Care
Following bariatric surgery, patients receive comprehensive post-operative care, including dietary guidance, lifestyle counseling, and ongoing medical monitoring to support their weight loss journey and ensure optimal outcomes.

FAQs
What dietary changes are required after bariatric surgery?
After bariatric surgery, dietary changes play a crucial role in achieving successful weight loss and maintaining long-term health. Initially, patients follow a liquid diet to allow the stomach to heal. Over time, they transition to pureed foods, soft foods, and eventually solid foods. It's essential to focus on consuming protein-rich foods to support muscle mass and promote satiety, while limiting carbohydrates and fats. Portion control is also key, as the stomach's capacity is significantly reduced after surgery. Additionally, patients are encouraged to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding sugary beverages. Regular follow-up appointments with a dietitian are essential to ensure patients are meeting their nutritional needs and adjusting their diet as needed.
How long does it take to recover from bariatric surgery?
Recovery time after bariatric surgery varies depending on factors such as the type of procedure performed, individual health status, and adherence to post-operative guidelines. In general, patients can expect to spend a few days in the hospital following surgery for monitoring and pain management. Most individuals are able to return to work and resume normal activities within 2 to 4 weeks after surgery, although strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided during the initial recovery period. Full recovery may take several weeks to months, during which patients gradually resume eating solid foods and adjust to their new lifestyle.
Can I become pregnant after bariatric surgery?
Yes, it is possible to become pregnant after bariatric surgery. In fact, many women experience improved fertility and higher chances of successful pregnancy after significant weight loss following surgery. However, it's important to wait until weight has stabilized and nutritional deficiencies have been addressed before attempting pregnancy. Women are advised to wait at least 12 to 18 months after surgery before conceiving to reduce the risk of complications and ensure optimal outcomes for both mother and baby. Regular prenatal care and monitoring by healthcare professionals are essential for pregnant women who have undergone bariatric surgery to ensure adequate nutrition and support a healthy pregnancy.
Will I need to take supplements after bariatric surgery?
Yes, taking supplements is typically necessary after bariatric surgery to prevent nutritional deficiencies and support overall health. The altered anatomy of the digestive system can affect the body's ability to absorb certain vitamins and minerals, making supplementation essential. Common supplements recommended after bariatric surgery include a multivitamin, calcium, vitamin D, iron, vitamin B12, and protein supplements. The specific supplements and dosages required may vary depending on individual needs and the type of bariatric procedure performed. Regular monitoring of nutrient levels through blood tests and ongoing guidance from healthcare providers are crucial to ensure patients are meeting their nutritional requirements.
Is bariatric surgery reversible?
While some bariatric procedures, such as gastric banding, are reversible, others, such as gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, are typically considered permanent. Reversing bariatric surgery is a complex decision that should be carefully considered in consultation with a healthcare provider. Factors such as the patient's health status, weight loss goals, and potential risks and benefits of reversal surgery must be taken into account. In some cases, revisional surgery may be an option to address complications or inadequate weight loss after bariatric surgery. However, the decision to undergo reversal or revisional surgery should be made on a case-by-case basis, with careful consideration of individual circumstances and goals.
What lifestyle changes are necessary after bariatric surgery?
Bariatric surgery is not a quick fix for weight loss but rather a tool to support long-term success through lifestyle changes. After surgery, patients are encouraged to adopt healthy habits such as regular exercise, mindful eating, and adequate hydration. Portion control and mindful eating are essential for maintaining weight loss and preventing overeating. Developing a consistent exercise routine that includes both cardiovascular and strength training activities helps support weight loss, improve overall fitness, and enhance metabolic health. Additionally, attending support groups, engaging in counseling, and seeking ongoing guidance from healthcare professionals can provide valuable support and motivation for making lasting lifestyle changes after bariatric surgery

Are you considering gastric sleeve surgery as a weight loss solution? It's important to understand what happens after the surgery to ensure long-term success. In this blog post, we will explore the journey post-gastric sleeve surgery in Melbourne and what you can expect in terms of weight loss, lifestyle changes, and overall health improvements.
Understanding Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical procedure that involves reducing the size of the stomach by removing a large portion of it. This results in a smaller stomach pouch that can hold less food, leading to reduced calorie intake and weight loss. The surgery is typically recommended for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 or higher with obesity-related health conditions.
Immediate Post-Surgery Recovery
After gastric sleeve surgery, patients will spend a few days in the hospital for monitoring and recovery. During this time, they will be on a liquid diet before gradually transitioning to soft foods and, eventually, solid foods. It's important to follow the post-operative guidelines provided by your best gastric sleeve surgeon Melbourne to ensure proper healing and minimise complications.
Weight Loss Journey
One of the primary goals of gastric sleeve surgery Melbourne is significant weight loss. In the first year after surgery, patients can expect to lose a substantial amount of weight, with many achieving their goal weight or coming close to it. However, it's important to note that weight loss will vary from person to person based on factors such as diet, exercise, and overall health.

This includes adopting a healthy diet rich in protein, fruits, and vegetables, as well as regular exercise to maintain weight loss and improve overall health.
Health Improvements
In addition to weight loss, gastric sleeve surgery can lead to improvements in obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. Many patients experience a reduction or even resolution of these conditions post-surgery, leading to a better quality of life and overall well-being.
Follow-Up Care
Regular follow-up appointments with the best gastric sleeve surgeon Melbourne are essential for monitoring progress, addressing any concerns or complications, and providing ongoing support. These appointments may include nutritional counselling, physical activity recommendations, and psychological support to help you navigate the challenges of post-surgery life.
Maintaining Long-Term Success
Achieving long-term success after gastric sleeve surgery requires dedication and commitment to a healthy lifestyle. It's important to continue following the dietary and exercise guidelines provided by your healthcare team, as well as attending regular follow-up appointments to track progress and make any necessary adjustments.
Conclusion
