just finished jarra's part of earth prime.

the worldbuilding in this series continues to astound me. learning about runners and changelings was gut-wrenching, but at the same time it made so so much sense. i really like how it was handled (and how valeska handled the runner's funeral. it's what he fucking deserved)

i think the part that actually hit me the hardest though was keon's outburst. he's always so calm and collected, and he always seems to be at least three steps ahead of everyone else. it was really interesting to finally see his mask fall away to reveal that he's just as angry and bitter as jarra is, beneath it all. he's just more calculating about it. he's very similar to jarra in a lot of ways, and i feel like that's why he, jarra, and issette make such good friends, and why issette and keon make such a good couple.

i thought it was really interesting to see his feelings towards jarra in the novellas. he'd naturally be drawn to her because of how similar they both are, but that similarity also means they wouldn't really work as a couple. they're both too intensely private about their feelings to talk about them, and they both hold such deep wells of anger that it would make for a very explosive relationship. issette on the other hand is a very good stabilizing influence on both of them, as well as being way more in touch with her emotions

on another note, it was a delight as always to see more of gradin. i genuinely do think he's my favourite lovable asshole character that i've ever come across. probably because he's not the kind of lovable asshole who's just lashing out at everyone to hide how vulnerable he is, like so many characters of this archetype are. gradin just loves riling people up, he loves complaining, and he's very blunt about how he likes attention. it's always so much fun seeing his banter with jarra because he knows exactly which of her buttons to press

also, the brief, fleeting moments where you can see the gooey heart under (very very deep under) the prickly exterior are very sweet. when valeska said that he's been bragging about being the one that taught jarra how to fly, and how proud he is of her, it made me so 🥺🥺🥺 i cannot wait for earth and water to be published! i'm guessing it's probably gonna be about jarra becoming a next of kin, and probably lead right up to her conversation with candace at the beginning of earth girl.

i am sad though that it looks like we're not gonna get the riak and jarra conversation about her grandmother until part two of the earth girl aftermath stories :/

1932- Reanudan relaciones Argentina y Uruguay con un partido amistoso que gana el equipo uruguayo por 1 a 0. Uruguay lució camiseta roja para evitar revivir los incidentes de la final del mundial de 1930, motivo de la interrupción.
