What is a Russian Character and How to write them
As @sarapaprikas-blog and I were working on this post, we noticed a gap of knowledge and public perception that we want to address. Plenty of characters get labelled as Russian in media without necessarily being Russian. On the other hand the Archetypal ”Russian” character often does not mirror the realities of being Russian. We are to talk about that.
What is Russia?
Russia is a country. It is the largest country in the world with over 140 million inhabitants, stretching over 11 time zones. It is often seen as the successor state to the Soviet Union, which in itself was the successor state of the Russian Empire. The Soviet Union and Russia do not have the same borders or government. However, modern Russia draws a lot from its history as the largest and dominant part of the Soviet Union. Before the Soviet Union, the area was governed by the Russian Empire. The Russian Empire, as the name already indicates, was imperialist. The history as an Empire with massive expansion, colonies and conquering different people, is arguably the biggest reason why modern Russia is as big as it is today.
What is Russian?
There is a difference between the language Russian, the ethnicity Russian, and the nationality Russian. In English the difference can be made out only by context.
Who is Russian?
As aforementioned, there is a difference between Russian (Россиянин) meaning citizen of Russia, and ethnically Russian (Русские). The term Russian (Русские) usually refers to ethnicity, indicating a person who has Russian roots. Russian (Россиянин) implies Russian citizenship, regardless of ethnicity. Thus, a Russian can be someone with Russian citizenship, but not all Russian citizens are Russians in the ethnic sense. Also, not all ethnic Russians have Russian citizenship or live within Russia.
Ethnic-Russians are an East Slavic people. Obviously, they mainly live in Russia. But there are also large communities in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, and other countries. The traditional religion among Russians is Orthodox Christianity. The main language is Russian.
The country Russia is home to more than 190 ethnicities, including indigenous and autochthonous people, leading to a variety of languages, religions and practiced cultures. So, someone who holds a Russian citizenship, has ethnic Russian heritage and / or speaks Russian, can look very different than the cliche Russian bond girl or evil-doer indicates. That also means that those who get labelled Russian can live very different lives. Writing a Russian character gives you a lot of room outside of the prevalent stereotyped depictions.
Who is not Russian?
Simple - those who say they are not Russian, are not Russian.
Who are Slavs? What is Slavic?
The slavic people are a variety of people, ethnically Russian people are part of that group. However, there are a lot of other ethnic groups that are Slavs without being Russian e.g. Poles, Sorbs, Czech, Ukrainians, and many more. Slavic is the corresponding adjective to Slavs. It is often used to describe the indo-Slavic language group. Slavic is also often used to describe the collectively perceived similarities of Slavic peoples' culture. However, that can be misleading and get’s often orientalised as not everything from Eastern-Europe or Russia is slavic.
Russian vocabulary Да - Yes Нет - No Привет - Hi Здравствуйте - Hello Как дела ? - How are you? Хорошо - Good Пожалуйста - Please Не за что - my pleasure  До свидания - Goodbye Пока - bye  Увидимся - See you later Хорошего дня - Have a nice day Простите - I'm sorry. (Plural or honoured addressee) Помогите, пожалуйста. - Help me please. (Plural or honoured addressee) Доброе утро - Good morning Доброй ночи - Good night. Добрый день - Good day / afternoon.
Pet names in Russian About pet names. They are either masculine of feminine . Please don't use words like darling, kitten, baby, pretty, sweetie, little one, little fox, etc. as they sound really strange in translation to native speakers. Pet names are common for close ones (family, close friends, spouses). Sometimes primary school teachers call students by affectionate names. Also sweet old lady may call you ( Дорогой/ Дорогая). But outside of that nobody calls each other by pet names, only using names because Russians are very reserved and private people in general. Gender neutral pet names: жизнь моя - my life солнце мое - my sun or my sunshine  ты мое все - you my everything. лучик - sunray. мое сокровище - my treasure.  мое золотце - my gold or sweetheart. моя любовь - my love. ты моя радость - you are my joy. ангелочек - Angel. прелесть моя - my precious.
Queerness and gender-neutral speech in Russian Being queer in Russia is hard as queers face oppression. Because of that, there is limited to no public discourse on how to adapt and diversify the language to include queer and especially non-binary identities. This is a problem as the Russian language is extremely gendered and expresses a gender binary in near default. While gender neutral pronouns in Russian exist, it's harder to use them in real life as the neutral pronoun “оно” is mostly associated with things or animals and not living humans, similar to the English “it”. Often words generally do not have gender neutral alternatives.  However, one way we suggest for a more gender neutral speech is to avoid most explicit gendering as the flexible syntax in combination with using plural pronouns in Russian allow for more gender neutral speech. For Example: Я люблю их всем моих сердцем - I love them with all my heart. Расскажи мне о них! - Tell me about them.  Дай им время- give them time. Я горжусь ими - I'm proud of them.  Они сделает это сами  -  they do it themselves. Read more about queerness in Russia here: one two three four
Russian swearing                             In Russia, swearing is considered a sign of rudeness and poor manners. Use accordingly. Also, as mentioned here, Russian syntax and inflection are different from English. Meaning one word can be a whole sentence. We punctuated every swearing that is technically a whole sentence and therefore can stand on its own grammatically. Блять - fuck Пошел нахуй. - fuck you  Хуй - dick Пизда - cunt Мы в пизде. - we are fucked / “We are stuck in the cunt.” Ебать - fuck Ахуел. - are you/they crazy?! Это пиздец. - this fucked up Мудак - asshole  Завали ебало. - shut the fuck up Сука - bitch Черт - damn Непизди. - stop fucking lying. / Cut your bullshit. Пиздобол - Person who lies a lot/ Don't lie  Мамку твою ебал. - i fucked your mom (mostly used by middle schoolers, here in grammatically masculine gender.) Заебись. - holy shit (could be bad or good depend on situation) Похуй! - I don't fucking care. Навешать пиздюлей - to beat up someone. Срать тебе в рот -  To crap in your mouth. Ты ебанулся. - Are you batshit crazy. Заебал. - I'm sick of you. Жопа - ass. Иди в баню. - soft version of Иди нахуй.
Explanation of the Russian Naming System & Patronyms
The Russian naming system consists of three main elements: first name, patronymic and last name. Name: This is the first name given to a child at birth. In Russia, the names are chosen by the parents or relatives of the child. Names can be both traditional (Alexander, Anna, Ekaterina) and modern (Sofia, Victoria, Yaroslav). Patronymic: this is the second name, which reflects the child's origin from his father. Some cultures in Russia also use the mothers name. The patronymic name among Russian people arose in the 10th - 11th centuries and was used infrequently at first, but became widespread around the 16th century. It is formed by adding the suffix "-ovich" or "-aries" to the father's name. For example, if the father's name is Ivan, then his child Ivan or Ivanna will be called Ivan Ivanovich or Ivanna Ivanovna. Last name: This is a family surname that is passed down from generation to generation. It is usually assigned at birth and does not change without special circumstances. Surnames can come from various sources, such as profession, place of residence, origin, or personal characteristics. As a result, a person's full name consists of a first name, a patronymic (if applicable) and a last name, for example: Ivan Ivanovich Petrov.
How to respectfully address a person in Russian. In Russian there are two ways to address someone. Using the polite you (Вы) amd using the formal you (Ты). The choice of mode depends on how well you know the other person and whether you are superior or inferior in terms of age and social position. If you know the person's first name you refer to them by first name and patronymic. For examples: Борис Юрьевич, Ваши рабочие отлично справились с ремонтом- Boris Yurievich, your workers did a great job with repairs. Adults never address a person by name, only by surname or patronymic unless the addressee gives permission to address them in an informal manner. Regulations of most military require their members address each other in formal you( Вы ); subordinates address commanders as товарищ (comrade) + rank , while higher ups address subordinates by military rank and surname. Example: [Colonel to Sgt. Sidorov] Сержант Сидоров, ко мне! Sergeant Sidorov, front and center! [sgt. Sidorov to colonel] По вашему приказанию прибыл, товарищ полковник! Reporting for duty [lit. arrived at your (pl.) request], comrade colonel! Military men sometimes use same forms of address, albeit in singular, in friendly conversation. Example: Сержант, дай сигарету. - Give (sing.) me a cigarette, Sarge. Military hierarchy in Russia You can find useful links here. One Two

Little Raven
CN none
500 words.
Tumblr media
summary: this is a bit after escaping the master on a lovely evening after a days work in Schwarzkollm / Čorny Chołmc.
CN none
500 words.
Can be read as Krabat & the Kantorka but also as Krabat and a she/her afab OC.
The fire burned pleasantly under the stove. Little Madlenka enjoyed it it from her spot not too far away to stay warm but not too close either after the mother’s stern look. Madlenka watched her. Mama was standing at the window, peaking through a tiny gap outside to keep the surprisingly cool spring weather at bay.
“Papa?”
The mother turned around and smiled softly at her daughter.
“No, Papa is not home yet.”
Madlenka shook her head like she had seen it others do and grabbed the little toy raven in front of her for comfort.
Yes, yes, Papa is not home yet.
Whatever that home was. As far as Madlenka knew, home was the world and the rest Madlenka did not know of. But she knew of Papa. He was the tallest human, the only one who lifted her so high she was able to touch the ceiling and nearly the sky when it was cloudy. He made her fly like a raven.
“Kra! Kra!” The toy raven rose into the air, high above the floor and over Madlenka’s head. Maybe the raven could see when Papa was coming home so Mama had time to play with Madlenka instead?
“Yes, my child. Kra! That’s what the raven cries!” Mama praised and turned back to the window.
I know how the raven does it, mother. Play with me. Here, have the raven look outside instead.
Madlenka threw the toy at her mother the moment mother cried out in happiness and reached for her daughter, nearly stepping onto the toy at her feet.
“Look who is here after a day of work on the fields, Madlenka?”
The little girl, now save up in her mother’s arms, peaked outside into the twilight.
The tallest man alive made his way through the yard and past the garden, checking if the chicken were secure and finally turning to the house.
“Papa!”
Excited the girl rose her arms and clapped her hands as the door into the house opened and the father stepped inside.
He shook his jacket and kicked off his heavy boots before kneeling and opening his arms.
“Where is my little girl?”
Me? That is me! I am little girl!
Madlenka wiggled in her mother’s arms to be let go and ran to the door.
“Papa, Papa, Kra, Kra, Papa!”
The father caught her in his arms and lifted her up, so high up, nearly to the ceiling like every evening.
“Are you Papa’s little raven, little one? Huh? Flying so high? Well, don’t fly away just yet. There is dinner to be had.”
Madlenka giggled. Papa was always so funny.
She turned around and looked at mother.
Here see, mama! Papa is being funny. I am not flying away. Not before dinner, mama.
Mother stepped closer and lifted her head to give Papa a kiss only to be caught in his free arm, embracing her, and holding her closer.
“Hello my love.” Papa greeted mother. “I missed you.”
“I missed you too, Krabat.”

⇀ where you can find me elsewhere online when tumblr finally crumbles into the sea:
neocities (grimmwrites) -- this is my little website i've been noodling around with for the past year-ish. there's not much there, i don't really know what i want to do with it, but it's the most personal thing outside of tumblr that i have.
letterboxd (catgallagher) -- i log all the movies i watch, make lists, and occasionally review things.
pinterest (foalies) -- i just make moodboards for stories i'm writing and ideas i have, no wedding/recipe/crafting boards.
instagram (ivyplume) -- i don't post much anymore because the algorithm sucks ass, but i'd be willing to post more about my writing and day-to-day if i had friends there.
twitter/x (_ivyplume) -- i literally only use this to keep up with trends and news. very rarely post.
& if you're really nice and promise not to laugh i'll link you to my ao3 account where i've posted smutty otome fic and incredibly self-indulgent star wars fic

AYATO UPDATE
So I know I’ve been silent for a while but I’ve been working out all the ins and outs of a massive chapter with a lot of time and characters to keep track of. so, basically-
Tumblr media
Yeah, I am suffering. Plus online classes have started and they are annoying as fuck and really stressful and time consuming so shit is going to be slow but on the upside, I am almost done with the first POV of the chapter. Don’t know exactly how I’ll structure it yet with the rest of the chapter but I have most of the stuff down so we’ll see how it goes. Hopefully I will have at least some content for you by the end of next week. Anyway, i hope this isn’t too sad lol. Time delays are nothing new with me but hopefully the content at the end is worth the wait. talk more soon xx

AYATO UPDATE!!!!!!!!!! AND A GODDAMN MILESTONE!!!!!
Tumblr media
We finally reached 100K words!!!!
And we're officially done with the entire first week (and a little more of September!! in the book I mean) we'll be doing some time jumps soon so this was definitely the easy bit honestly (keeping track of all the characters is not going to be fun). but! besides that though I did finish writing chapter 12 and it's melodramatic as shit (as I promised with the premise and I'm finally delivering especially with the Aaron pov) and I'm doing some basic edits rn so expect something new tonight and tomorrow lol because holy shit I love how the end of this chapter turned out. It's not a cliffhanger and I'm... Completely satisfied with it? It's a weird feeling that hopefully you'll understand once you read the thing. And I'm doing some more basic planning for chapter 13 and I'll hopefully be done with the planning and maybe even some writing by the end of the week because I'm actually trying to write at least 200 words every single day and edit at least half a pov. So we'll see how that works out because I was on a roll today and absolutely wrote 3K words in one sitting. Hopefully tomorrow will be just as good once I've finished preparing for chapter 13.
But that's all and I'll see y'all tonight with a quick pov with Ingram and tomorrow with Mason and Thea. Like I said before we're gonna put a tiny bit of a pause on Joe's stuff for now so I'll post it at the end of all of the povs I have right now. See y'all soon :)

Last Line Tag!
Rules: I... forgot them again, but uh. Post your last sentence, and then tag the same amount of people as there were words in the line? The gist of that.
It’s been a few weeks since I participated in any, and I owe. So many people last line tags. And first lines, interestingly. Anyway! This one is for @keen2meecha. This is one of two. Thanks for tagging me, human!
Tarka had to trust Aylin’s judgement on this; she wouldn’t make Tarka equip a set of malfunctioning devices, or send her out with them if she wasn’t sure. It could still backfire on her, she knew, but the fact that Aylin had used them to crawl along the ceiling like a demented arachnid, a fifteen foot drop between her and solid concrete in a test run just last week also helped.
First line for additional context. This is from Hidden Lights Burning Bright. I don’t know how old it is, and currently, you can see the main character, Tarka Lovell, facing some doubts about Aylin’s inventions. Which, fair. She’s about to climb the side of a forty-foot building with nothing except highly experimental, spider barb gloves to stop her from splattering messily onto the pavement below.
There’s 43 words in this sentence, so that means 43 people to call attention to!
Tagging: @trashplanetsandmagicforests, @thewalkingnerdx, @aelenko, @residentofthedisc, @writeouswriter, @insomniac-dot-ink, @gingerly-writing, @keen2meecha, (tagging you back for this one, because I’m curious about your wips and would like an excuse to see more) @rubyleaf, @kiyotaki, @writerfae, @cincinnat-i, @dgwriteblr, @hotchocolatewriting, @uhva, @phantom-stargazer, @somuchtowrite, @grimmwrites, @writingguardian, @jungdrizzydraco, @thetroublewithcoffee, @coven-of-one, @lexa-writes, @wordshavings, @rogueity, @anthonylora, @tiny-dragons-castle, @kindar-life, @apollonkondric, @noxchyc, @donovyn--nox, @levi-davis-ftm, @oneleggedflamingo, @ccwritesstuff, @anemptyvoidforall, @fairy-tale-king, @realworldficton, @words-dance-i-write, @behugs-and-blood, @wordsconquerall, @el-norawrites, @violet-galaxies

books i read in march:
16 ways to defend a walled city by K.J. Parker
9/10, great style, great ideas, great ending. this fanatsy books is about a man finding himself in charge of.. well, you guessed it, defending a walled city. very funny yet surprisingly thoughtful at times. subtraction for talking about racism and xenophobia without knowing much about it. i am absolutely fine with writers not just writing about things they don't experience (obviously). but those shorts parts about the alienating experiences of foreignness felt odd and shallowly researched. apart from those short moments a recommended book.
Oni no Hanayome wa Taberaretai 1-5 by Keiko Sakano
8/10 Yes it's a manga series but let's not be snobbish about it. it looks like a book. it's getting read like a book. it's a book. this series is absolutely soft and simple entertainment. it's about a bride being married to a demon. the series delivers what it promises but nothing else. solid romance escapism. i did not regret buying those books.
Nordic Gods by Johan Egerkrans
10/10 I remember reading this books a couple of years ago and picked it up again for research reasons. Great book as an introduction to nordic, Scandinavian folk and mythology. Nordic Gods does not downplay the pragmatic brutality of skandi folk and myths so i am not sure why that was in the little kids section. Also, normally I don't buy books just for their looks but this time I got the german hardcover edition and it looks great.
My lesbian experience with Loneliness by Kabi Nagata
10/10 this book was recommended to me and I definitely can see why. This manga talks about mental health and experiences of isolation, anxiety and growing up. A very sweet but raw and honest piece of media not just lonely and/or lesbians can relate to.

AYATO and OWAD UPDATE
I know I’ve been silent for a while but I’ve been working on the next chapter and planning the next six chapters out!! We’re moving ahead swiftly in the investigation and things are starting to go back to usual (well,,,, soap opera usual is never usual but you know what I mean) with the kids! My expected WC for the chapter is around 8K and I already have 5K written and only three more POVs left to finish the chapter! So! There will be a Joe pov later tonight (or tomorrow morning at the latest because I have a history assignment due tonight as well) where you find out things about his life and his mom! I’m just editing it right now but it should be up soon! And since I have a few more POVs written as well, I'll be putting them up too soon! And my last exam for the semester is on Wednesday so after that I will have all the time in the world to finish this book! Hopefully I'll at least be halfway done with the first draft! Which reminds me!! The first draft crossed 95K last night!!! Its been a long ass journey and I'm glad you've stuck around!!
And there's other new too! I'm almost done with the first half of the third chapter of OWAD (I had to scrap the original because it was accidentally a little too racially charged but this one's coming along... Relatively well! It might be done in a week or so! And you'll finally get to meet Faye, Ralph's introduction to the whole world along with some vampires hopefully!! Its going to be super fun!
