Unwitnessed Duels in The Secrets of Dumbledore
In SoD there are two important duels: one between Albus and Credence and one between Albus and Gellert. Both duels use the same plot device. The duelers are in a separate ‘world’ where they remain unseen by others, The effect of their magic is limited in the confines of that world. Both duels are visually beautiful and allow uninterrupted interactions between the characters, but I have very mixed feelings about them.
Yeates has admitted that he is the one who thought of Grindeldore fighting in ‘a world of their own’ because he wanted to give the audience a glimpse of them dueling without breaking canon. We don’t know who thought of using a similar device for the duel with Credence, but the main objective seems to be that Credence lashes out and uses his power to its fullest without any repercussions in terms of the Statute of Secrecy and of killing bystanders.
There are several issues with this plot device. When it comes to Credence, it’s convenient.  Initially, Credence does not know that they are in a mirror-world.The fact that Credence was in control of his obscurus, unlike in FB1, and was lashing out without caring for casualties is never addressed. Then it’s messy when one thinks of the magic system and the story. The audience that has watched and read HP can’t help asking why Albus wouldn’t have used such magic in other occasons; for example during his duel with Voldemort towards the end of OoTP. The ‘danger’ of writing about magic is that one can imagine absolutely anything happening. Limits are necessary to raise the stakes and there needs to be a certain continuity in each character’s abilities so that things can still make sense.
Another point of convenience: In the span of one movie we see two times the same plot device, but it’s not even derrived from the same kind of magic. In Credence’s case it’s Albus’ doing. When it comes to the Grindeldore duel, it’s the result of the breaking of the bond. Again, this seems convenient and kind of lazy, because it makes little sense why we’ve never seen such a thing if it can happen in several different ways within this world.
Now, the positive: Despite the flaws I mentioned, the two different ways the device is used creates a short of thematic metaphor for the respective situation.
The Movie Magic book mentions that the duel between the two Dumbledore sees them ‘battle over the truth’. It also gives us a glimpse of the main idea behind the magic used in Albus and Credence’s duel:
Tumblr media
Albus knows that Credence is following him. He stops in front of a shop that gives information to tourists. It so happens that he stands in front of the display that has pictures of ships very similar to the one that took Credence to America. Both he and Credence are reflected in the glass (a short of mirror if you will). Albus breathes his magic on a snowflake that passes through the glass, creating ripples. When we see the flake again it’s moving towards Albus, moves past him and finds Credence. But we never see it passing  inside the tourist shop, neither does it bounce back outside. It simply passes from the real world to the mirror world, which is where Credence and Albus are from that point. All the signs, the posters etc. are reversed. It’s basically an illusion that can deceive. There are things that are amiss, but it seems real. It’s not though. When Albus takes off the light with the Deluminator the mirroring/fake version of the real world disolves.  and only he and Credence remain in the space. This is an impressively accurate metaphor for Credence’s situation. He knows a distorted, mirroring version of the truth. He sees things in the light that Grindelwald has shined upon them. Albus ‘takes out’ that light  and returns it by giving Credence a new perspective and returning him to reality.
On the other hand Grindelwald and Dumbledore are transported in ‘their own world’ the moment the chain of the troth breaks and the pendant starts fracturing. Visually, it’s as if they are transported inside the pendant. They are the two drops of blood. Their surroundings have the same mix of silverish and rosegold colour that the stone at the heart of the pendant has. As the bond keeps breaking we hear a sound and we see more fructures appearing in the Albus and Gellert’s surroundings. The world completely dissolves when at the very moment that the physical manifestation of the bond is completely ruined.
I feel that FB does this a lot... there are flaws in the writing. I see them, I don’t mind acknowledging them, but then there is this sort of beauty and metaphors, themes and in the way the characters unfold that is absolutely fascinating to me and has this sort of poetry to it. The way it affects me emotionally ends up being a reddeming quality I guess.
