SHIN MIN A CODE
This was followed by romantic comedy My Love, My Bride, in which she and Jo Jung-suk played a newly married couple it was a remake of the same-titled 1990 hit which starred Choi Jin-sil and Park Joong-hoon. But Shin became best known for her portrayals of supernatural horror icons revamped into endearingly innocent yet spunky heroines in the rom-com My Girlfriend Is a Nine-Tailed Fox (2010), and the historical drama Arang and the Magistrate (2012).Īfter appearing in The X, a 2013 spy thriller short film directed by Kim Jee-woon, Shin returned to the big screen in 2014 in Gyeongju, an introspective arthouse romance opposite Park Hae-il. This was followed by leading roles in the melodrama A Love to Kill with Rain and Kim Sa-rang (actress) the romantic comedy The Beast and the Beauty with Ryoo Seung-bum, and the psychological thriller The Devil with Uhm Tae-woong and Ju Ji-hoon.Īs Shin entered her mid-twenties, she began showcasing more maturity in her choice of roles, playing a sexy counterculture singer in Go Go 70s, an unfaithful wife in The Naked Kitchen, and a cynical young woman in search of her father in Sisters on the Road. She took on a supporting role in Kim Jee-woon's film noir A Bittersweet Life, reuniting her with previous Beautiful Days co-star Lee Byung-hun. The newcomer quickly rose to stardom, through the high school martial arts comedy Volcano High with Jang Hyuk, and the college romance Madeleine with Jo In-sung. Shin Min-a began her career as a model for teen magazine KiKi in 1998, then appeared in several music videos for K-pop boyband g.o.d, until her acting debut in 2001. She is best known for starring in television dramas A Love to Kill, My Girlfriend Is a Nine-Tailed Fox, Arang and the Magistrate and Oh My Venus. She took on a supporting role in Kim Jee-woon's film noir A Bittersweet Life, reuniting her with previous Beautiful Days c Shin Min-ah is a South Korean actress. Both sides tried a late winner but failed to score the third goal of the night in Bergamo and the match ended 1-1.Description: Shin Min-ah is a South Korean actress. AC Milan pushed and managed to score the equalizer in the second half with midfielder Ismael Bennacer. The home team scored the opening goal of the match with Ruslan Malinovskyi who surprisingly started the game after coach Gian Piero Gasperini declared that he was for sale in the pre-match press conference. Naming Korean Characters
Surnames
We all know Kim, Lee, Park, etc. And those really are extremely common. Kim alone account for over 21% of the South Korean population as of 2014, meaning 1 in 5 people are Kims. (Hi, I’m one of them)
However there are hundreds of surnames in use, not including the foreign surnames that foreign-born Koreans carry into the system when they’re naturalized.
Surnames are generally 1 letter (in Hangul) but 2-letter surnames like 황보(Hwangbo) and 남궁(Namgung) exist.
Wikipedia does have a comprehensive list of Korean surnames.
Korea had a rigidly patrilineal surname laws up until very recently. It was not until 2008 that it became possible at all to give children their mother’s surname (though exceptions were in place for children with unknown or foreign fathers) and even then there were restrictions. Those restrictions were lifted in 2021.
Some people, particularly feminists, choose to use both their mother’s and father’s surnames in their lives, but it is not legally recognized in South Korea.
Bon-gwan
본관 is usually translated to clan, although it is a uniquely Korean concept (it originated from China but to my knowledge, it is not in common use in China) that the word “clan” doesn’t fully contain in my opinion. Bon-gwan is family origin, essentially a city that your progenitor was based in. “Same” surnames can be of different clans. Gyeongju Kim and Gimhae Kim may both be Kims but they are different lineages. This is probably not all that relevant in contemporary fiction, but the more you know, you know? There are sub-clans to clans but we will not get into it. A lot of people, including myself, don’t even know our own sub-clans. Clans have legal significance in South Korea but the law doesn’t get into sub-clans so a lot of us have stopped caring... lol
Given Names
It’s common for overseas Koreans to use the names in the languages of the countries they live in, so it’s only realistic that your Korean-American character is named Alice Kim or something like that. They might still have Korean names their parents call them by. So it’s something to think about while building your character.
For example, in my WIP my characters Christian, Cindy and Cordelia are all named that way because they are Korean-Americans. But they all have Korean names as their middle names. Christian and Cindy’s parents occasionally call them by their Korean names.
Korean given names are generally two letters, although one-letter given names aren’t all that uncommon. South Korea’s legal limit to given names is five letters. The law was introduced in 1993, there was no limit before then. So those who were born before 1993 may have even longer names.
Many Korean names are based on Hanja (Chinese characters) but native Korean names exist. Korean Supreme Court has rules about what Hanja can be used in names. The rules were introduced in 1991 so people born before then may have any Hanja in their names. Here’s a list of Hanja for names with Hangul readings. It’s... a whole fucking lot.
Our names are meaningful, as names usually are in many cultures. For example, my name is 지현(Jihyun, 智賢) meaning knowledge and wisdom. Consider thinking about your character’s personality and traits, and try incorporating that to their names maybe.
List of Native Korean Names I Think Are Pretty
Note that a lot of these are considered “girly” names.
가람 (Ga-ram, archaic word for river)
가을 (Ga-eul, autumn)
겨울 (Gyeo-ul, winter)
고운 (Go-ul, pretty, kind, gentle)
나래 (Na-rae, archaic word for wings)
누리 (Nu-ri, the world)
다솜 (Da-som, archaic word for love)
단비 (Dan-bi, sweet rain)
별 (Byeol, star)
봄 (Bom, spring)
사랑 (Sa-rang, love)
새벽 (Sae-byeok, dawn)
샛별 (Saet-byeol, Venus planet)
슬기 (Seul-gi, wisdom)
여름 (Yeo-reum, summer)
이슬 (Yi-seul, dew)
하나 (Ha-na, one)
하늘 (Ha-neul, sky)
Romanizations
There are several different “rules” when it comes to romanizing Korean, but names often don’t follow the typical romanization table for several reasons.
One reason is that when Koreans first began immigrating to USA, they chose romanizations that are similar to existing English names or words to assimilate better. That’s how 김, 이, 박 came to be Kim, Lee, Park respectively, even though Gim/Ghim, Yi, Bahk would have been more accurate transliterations.
Another reason is that the romanized version may have negative connotations. For example, you don’t want to romanize 강 to Gang because it indicates organized crime, so Kang is used instead.
As I said earlier, Korean names are generally two letters and they are commonly hyphenated like the way I listed the native Korean names above. However, I choose to romanize without hyphenation. It all comes down to personal choice.
Initial (Sound) Law
What the fuck is this now? Well, simply put, ㄹ can’t be the first sound, and ㄴ can’t be the first sound in some occasions. This rule only applies to South Korean, North Korea doesn’t have this rule.
That’s why in Crash Landing on You, the North Korean man 리정혁(Ri Jeong-hyeok) has a surname 리 while South Koreans wouldn’t have that surname. They would be 이 instead.
ㄹ as a beginning sound is turned into ㅇ or ㄴ.
ㄴ in some cases are turned into ㅇ.
However here are South Korean people who have the surnames like 류 Ryu, because they insisted on keeping their name and got the law changed to accommodate these exceptions. People who didn’t protest as much... their surnames have been turned into 유.
It’s confusing as fuck... I know. All I’m saying is try to stay away from giving your (South) Korean characters Korean names that start with R/L unless you have a good reason to make an exception.
If you have any writing questions regarding Korea and Koreans, my ask is open! Happy writing.

2020 year in a review
thanks for tagging me @vishcount, eventhough you probably know all of these answers already. i don’t know if i am gonna do the other one, let’s see.  tagging @the-cloud-whisperer, @sassyassassy, @intyalote as usual, if you have fun with this!  I really tried to rank these amongst the top five, which was a personal challenge for me, so don’t take these rankings too seriously.  my answers below the cut cause there is a novel incoming:
Top 5 Movies you saw this year
I don’t watch many movies in general, though I have seen quite a handful this year actually? I might have forgotten half of it already tbh
Moonlit Winter (2019) -I have been waiting to find this movie online for ages, so I was incredibly happy when I finally found it at the beginning of this year. It’s wonderful, heartbreaking and raw - about the relationship between mother and daughter, about lost queer love between the mother and her friend, about life in general. I cried buckets.
Parasite (2019) -do I have to say anything? I don’t think so, this movie defined many this year right?
The King and the Clown (2005) -pleasantly surprised by this one, it made me cry and sad and it’s not a happy gay story but it still touched me so much. also the production is amazing
Mulan (2009) -I rewatched this movie this year after hearing about the chaos that was Mulan 2020, and it still gets me; I don’t know what it is, but it might be the last part of the movie that always hits me like a train and I am back to thinking about  it
Inside The Girls (2014) -not actually a good movie with a horrible name, but certainly interesting and had some potential?? I am listing it because I had a lot of fun watching it with my dear friend vish and it was fun sharing our opinions on that, but I don’t actually recommend it that much (unless of course you wanna see Cheng Yi and Yin Zheng in a movie together being assholes)
Top 5 TV shows you watched this year
I probably watched around 20 shows this year so picking this was hard somehow? I feel like I forgot some gems but I guess these are the ones that stood out to me
Nirvana In Fire (2015) -by far the best show I’ve seen in a long time. The plot, the characters, the production - it really blew me away. I can’t recommend it enough because I still cry about it.
Winter Begonia (2020) -Funny how I am listing this here so high considering the split opinions I have about this show but damnit, in the end it won me over. It was truly something else wow.
The Stranded (Netflix 2019)  -Another surprise, but I just remembered this little show and it was so good? I really hope we will get a second season because I loved the first one and it was way too short. Also the production of this is so stunning, as well as the interesting set of characters.
Original Sin (2018) -This was a gem I discovered in the latter part of the year, mainly because of Yin Zheng, but when I watched it, it hit my mood perfectly. A crime show that has a beautiful atmosphere and is focused on characters. It has its faults and if you watch it for the cases and the plot, it’s not the most outstanding show but damnit, I watched it twice and loved it.
YYY: The Series (2020) -Amongst all these BL shows out there, this is my personal gem. It’s a wild ride of crack and sweetness, so enter at your own risk. let me just say I did not expect to bawl my eyes out at this tiny cracky show.
Top 5 songs of 2020
it really sucks having to choose only five songs but here I go from the huge amount of stuff I have listened to
Black Swan by BTS -this is pure art. in every way, it caters to my taste. I have nothing else to say except that it owns my soul. the visuals, the atmosphere, the music, the lyrics, the performance. it hits all marks and hurts me on a personal level.
Strange (feat. RM) by Agust D  -this mixtape saved me and choosing my fave song from this was difficult but I guess I have to name this iconic collab. The lyrics of this are truly....something else. if you have time, please go check them out, as well as the entire mixtape.
Pain by Vaundy -I have been very obsessed with this song and this singer, he has my heart.
Rien à prouver by Yseult -again, I am just obsessed with this song and her voice, Yseult truly is a goddess to me at this point
Zombie by Day6  -perfectly captures my mind, my life and my state this year.
Top 5 books you read in 2020   I have only read two novels this year, everything else was either university stuff or poetry, so this is what I am mostly listing here.
Gyeongju. The Capital of Golden Silla by Sarah Milledge Nelson -I used this as my main source for one of my fics I wrote this year and it was perfect. I spent an intense week of only researching for this topic and had a blast; especially this book was a blessing because it gave a good overview of what life back then could have been like.
Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater -one of the novels I read this year and I’ve been waiting for this for ages. Like the other books from TRC, I bingeread it on one day and adored it. Am excited for the rest of the trilogy and this new adventure!
Beyond The First Emperor’s Mausoleum: New Perspectives On Qin Art, edited by Liu Yang  -I read this for one of my lectures and I thought it had very interesting essays, namely Archaeological Finds of the Maijiayuan Cemetery and Qin’s Interaction with Steppe Cultures by Wang Hui; and Qin Cosmography and the First Cosmic Capital - Xianyang by David W. Pankenier.
The Mongol Empire. Betweem Myth and Reality by Denise Aigle -another one I read for lectures and it was a good overview to the broad topic that is the Mongol Empire.
Night Sky With Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong -I adore Vuong’s writing style so I hope to read more of his work. This is a beautiful, raw and honest work and I hope many more will read his book and the stories he has to tell.
+ Bonus: Affinity by Sarah Waters - wlw set in 19th century London; very dark and spooky and very fun to read if you like this sort of atmosphere (as I do).
5 positive things that happened in 2020
i managed to write and create a lot during the first half of this year, which i will treasure greatly. recently i have been struggling a lot - maybe it’s getting back on track now, but i guess i am still proud of all i managed to write/draw/other wise create this year.
amazing new flatmates joined our collective so i feel happy that we have this pleasant dynamic going on currently
i acquired some new housplants which have made me very happy this year, eventhough i struggle a little bit to keep them completely happy. am truly trying my best
i started taking medications for my depression, anxiety and social phobia in autumn and i think it was for the best. i still struggle from time to time but i truly feel a difference and i am glad this worked out mostly smoothly for me
in september we went on a short holiday in on the countryside and on the last night we all went outside to sit on the pier by a small pond. i will never forget this moment because after what felt like ages, i saw a crystal clear night sky. i haven’t seen so many stars in years and i could even see their reflections on the water, it was so magical and breathtaking. i think it was the one moment that still stands out from everything else. i just wish to return there, on my own, and just lie down for hours
anyway, if you have read through this rambling, i wish you a very happy new year and hope things will get better!!

At his friend’s funeral CHOI Hyeon, a professor in Beijing encounters his old friend Chun-won with whom he had a trip to Gyeongju, a historical city 7 years ago. Talking over drinks with his friend, CHOI suddenly reminds of ‘Chunhwa’, an obscene painting which they saw in a cafe in Gyeongju, but which Chun-won can remember nothing about. The next day CHOI makes an impulsive decision to head to Gyeongju. Full of expectation, he searches the cafe only to find that the painting is no longer there, but is an attractive new lady owner Yun-hui. After wandering around the city CHOI revisits the cafe without knowing that another story between he and Yun-hui is about to begin. (Synopsis by KOFIC)

has been included in the list of main national R&D projects in Korea since 2003.[355] In 2009, the government announced plans to build robot-themed parks in Incheon and Masan with a mix of public and private funding.[356] In 2005, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) developed the world’s second walking humanoid robot, HUBO. A team in the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology developed the first Korean android, EveR-1 in May 2006.[357] EveR-1 has been succeeded by more complex models with improved movement and vision.[358][359] Plans of creating English-teaching robot assistants to compensate for the shortage of teachers were announced in February 2010, with the robots being deployed to most preschools and kindergartens by 2013.[360] Robotics are also incorporated in the entertainment sector as well; the Korean Robot Game Festival has been held every year since 2004 to promote science and robot technology.[361] Biotechnology Since the 1980s, the Korean government has invested in the development of a domestic biotechnology industry, and the sector is projected to grow to $6.5 billion by 2010.[362] The medical sector accounts for a large part of the production, including production of hepatitis vaccines and antibiotics. Recently, research and development in genetics and cloning has received increasing attention, with the first successful cloning of a dog, Snuppy (in 2005), and the cloning of two females of an endangered species of wolves[which?] by the Seoul National University in 2007.[363] The rapid growth of the industry has resulted in significant voids in regulation of ethics, as was highlighted by the scientific misconduct case involving Hwang Woo-Suk.[364] South Korea shares its traditional culture with North Korea, but the two Koreas have developed distinct contemporary forms of culture since the peninsula was divided in 1945. Historically, while the culture of Korea has been heavily influenced by that of neighboring China, it has nevertheless managed to develop a unique cultural identity that is distinct from its larger neighbor.[365] Its rich and vibrant culture left 19 UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity, the third largest in the world, along with 12 World Heritage Sites. The South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism actively encourages the traditional arts, as well as modern forms, through funding and education programs.[366] The industrialization and urbanization of South Korea have brought many changes to the way modern Koreans live. Changing economics and lifestyles have led to a concentration of population in major cities, especially the capital Seoul, with multi-generational households separating into nuclear family living arrangements. A 2014 Euromonitor study found that South Koreans drink the most alcohol on a weekly basis compared to the rest of the world. South Koreans drink 13.7 shots of liquor per week on average and, of the 44 other countries analyzed, Russia, the Philippines, and Thailand follow.[367] Art Main article: Korean art Blue and white porcelain peach-shaped water dropper from Joseon Dynasty in 18th century Korean art has been highly influenced by Buddhism and Confucianism, which can be seen in the many traditional paintings, sculptures, ceramics and the performing arts.[368] Korean pottery and porcelain, such as Joseon’s baekja and buncheong, and Goryeo’s celadon are well known throughout the world.[369] The Korean tea ceremony, pansori, talchum and buchaechum are also notable Korean performing arts. Post-war modern Korean art started to flourish in the 1960s and 1970s, when South Korean artists took interest in geometrical shapes and intangible subjects. Establishing a harmony between man and nature was also a favorite of this time. Because of social instability, social issues appeared as main subjects in the 1980s. Art was influenced by various international events and exhibits in Korea, and with it brought more diversity.[370] The Olympic Sculpture Garden in 1988, the transposition of the 1993 edition of the Whitney Biennial to Seoul,[371] the creation of the Gwangju Biennale[372] and the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1995[373] were notable events. Architecture Main article: Architecture of South Korea See also: Korean architecture Namdaemun Because of South Korea’s tumultuous history, construction and destruction has been repeated endlessly, resulting in an interesting melange of architectural styles and designs.[374] Korean traditional architecture is characterized by its harmony with nature. Ancient architects adopted the bracket system characterized by thatched roofs and heated floors called ondol.[375] People of the upper classes built bigger houses with elegantly curved tiled roofs with lifting eaves. Traditional architecture can be seen in the palaces and temples, preserved old houses called hanok,[376] and special sites like Hahoe Folk Village, Yangdong Village of Gyeongju and Korean http://bit.ly/2WgahJD
