Kisses in the Rain - Ch 1
Chapter 1 (of 3) is written for @adrinetteapril 2023 - Day 17 - Kiss in the Rain This is canon divergent from beginning of Kwami’s Choice Part One. Read on Ao3
Chapter 1: Adrinette
“I feel like we missed out on something special.” Adrien said. “Do you think we’ll ever get another chance?”
Marinette’s fist tightened around the earring in her hand. She wanted to respond, to take back her ugly lie that she didn’t love him, to tell him that she wanted what he wanted more than anything. But the miraculous cut painfully into her palm. She’d never get to be truthful with him. Everything would end the same way it had with Luka, only it would be worse because she’s not sure she would ever get over Adrien.
The same way she’d never get over Chat Noir.
 She choked back a sob.
“Good-bye, Marinette,” he said. And he slipped away, taking a piece of her heart with him.
The second the latch clicked closed Marinette let herself fall to pieces. She wasn’t allowed to love Chat Noir and she couldn’t let herself love Adrien. Which was impossible because Chat Noir always caught her every      single     time she had lost all hope, and Adrien was so sweet and so patient she      still     could barely form words around him. She couldn’t      not    love them. And that wasn’t going to change anytime soon because how did you make yourself stop loving someone just because it was a bad idea?
But no one could stop her from crying.
Her throat was raw, her eyes were hot, and her gut writhed with every sobbing convulsion. And she knew she could be akumatized like this, but she couldn’t clamp down on the torrent of feelings anymore than she could stop the sun from setting.
“Marinette Dupain-Cheng, you have been an exemplary holder of the Ladybug. You’ve always used the power of creation for the greater good.”
Marinette sat up. Tikki sounded oddly formal, and she looked like she was about to cry.
“The task you’ve been performing has become too much of a burden, crushing you. Your mission is over.”
Marinette blinked at Tikki, her shock temporarily overcoming her grief.
 “Wh-what?”
“You can give up the earrings, Marinette. And then, you can finally be with Adrien.”
 Marinette blinked again.
Could she really do that? Just hand over the earrings and let Tikki subject some other poor soul to this responsibility?
Isn’t that what had been done to her though?
She didn’t owe anyone anything, did she?
She could let go of the earrings and never look back.
She was tired of responsibility and secrets. She was completely over having to sacrifice everything she wanted for something that should never have been her fight.
She had already slipped the second earring off when she froze.
If she did this she might never see Chat Noir again. Even if he happened across Marinette’s balcony he wouldn’t know she was his partner.
Hadn't she promised she would never abandon him? Just as he had shown time and again that he would never abandon her. And as much as she hated what being Ladybug had stolen from her, she couldn’t deny that she wouldn’t change anything because it had brought her Chat Noir.
And she loved him. And whether or not they could ever be together, whether or not she was able to pursue something with Adrien, she wanted him in her life.
She couldn’t give up Chat Noir.
 Not even for Adrien.
She gripped the earrings in her fist.
“No, Tikki. I can’t give up the earrings. Thank you, though, for reminding me why I still keep them.”
Tikki darted forward and nuzzled herself into Marientte’s chest.
“Oh, Marinette. I wish I could promise that things will get better, that they will work out.”
Marinette stroked her soothingly. “I know, Tikki. Thank you.”
 …
The moment his door clicked close, Adrien dropped all pretense and let himself fall face first onto his bed. He didn’t cry, but part of him wished that he could. Marinette didn’t love him anymore. He had just realized his own feelings, but they obviously weren’t new. It was just so unfair. What had he done wrong to lose her affections?
Or was he just not enough or too much, or just overall, unloveable? His mother had left. She hadn’t thought he was worth it. His father always found him wanting. And Ladybug had never been interested despite everything they had faced and been through together.
But Marinette was different. She had loved him once.
He hadn’t noticed, and now? Now, it was too late.
His fingers traced his bottom lip, trying to recreate the memory of her kiss. He wished he could have said yes to her as Chat Noir.
But it was hopeless. He was unlucky and cursed or something.
“Adrien Agreste,” Plagg announced, floating ominously through the air. Adrien made himself roll over so he could see Plagg hovering over him. “You have been an exemplary holder of the Black Cat. You’ve always used the power of destruction for the greater good, unlike me. Your mission is now over.”
 “But–”
“If you do this, you won’t have to hide anything from the ones you love. You can finally be yourself.”
Adrien shook his head. “How will that help anything? Marinette already said she doesn’t love me anymore.”
Plagg paused, his tiny lips pressing together for a moment. “Can you just trust me? It will solve everything.”
Adrien’s brows furrowed. “So the ring      does     make me unlucky then?”
Plagg had denied it over and over, saying that such associations with destruction were just superstition.
And now, Plagg looked so startled, but then his face lit up. “Yes! Exactly! Super unlucky. If you give it up everything will magically work out.”
Adrien snorted. Well, that clearly wasn’t it. But Adrien for the life of him, couldn’t guess what Plagg’s actual angle was.
“Is Ladybug trying to replace me and you’re just being nice about it?”
 “No! She adores you!”
“Are you mad that I ordered off brand Camembert last week? I swear they’re the same.”
“They absolutely are not! But no, that’s not what this is about. I’m serious. Can’t you just trust me?” Plagg asked.
Adrien had rarely seen him so serious, and so he had to believe him. Plagg always led him towards mischief but he had never once led him astray.
 “Okay.”
“Really?!” Plagg did a little dance in the air and Adrien laughed.
 “Yes, I always trust you.”
 “Give me the ring then.”
He started to slip the ring from his finger. It felt strange to let go of the object he had been trained to never relinquish. Even outside of superhero duties, being Chat Noir had once been his ticket to freedom and joy. He wasn’t certain when he had started to feel like another set of expectations that he could never hope to live up to. Where having a secret identity had once seemed fun, now just felt like it was a recipe to never ever show his full self to anyone.
What would it mean to be completely real with his friends? To never have to put his loved ones at risk just by caring about them too much?
To never have to hold back with Marinette?
The way he always had to with Ladybug?
 He froze.
 “Adrien?”
Ladybug who had lost everyone she could call an ally. Ladybug who had told him that she would never leave him. If he closed his eyes he could still hear her sobbing on the other side of his bathroom door.
 “What about Ladybug?”
 “What about her?”
 “I’m all she has left.”
“I would find her a worthy partner,” Plagg promised.
Adrien was shaking his head. “You can’t just replace all that time we had each other’s backs, Plagg.”
“It would be fine!” Plagg insisted.
Adrien shook his head. “I can’t abandon her.”
 His eyes squeezed closed.
 “Not even for Marinette.”
Brave self righteous Marinette who always seemed to have a sixth sense for when things were awry in his world, who never failed to bring a smile to his face, who always seemed to simply understand him when he barely understood anything himself.
How lucky he would be to have her in his life as more than a friend, as a      partner     in      every     sense of the word.
And suddenly he      was     crying. It seemed like it should be easier to let Marinette go than Ladybug who he had loved for so long.
 And yet, it wasn’t.
He felt the loss more deeply because now it wasn’t just her saying no. It was      him     making the choice. And he could barely stand it.
He whipped out his phone, shot her a text.
     Can we please talk?
 Her response was immediate.
     Of course.
He texted back just as quickly.
     I’ll be over in ten.
 …
She’s waiting for him outside the bakery, unable to stay inside despite the threatening cloud cover overhead.
He arrives before she is ready. She can’t look at him.
“I’m not here to change your mind,” he says. “I just… I didn’t want to end things like… that.”
She shakes her head. “I didn’t want to leave it that way either. I… I want you to know that I was lying.”
 His eyebrows come together. “About?”
“I do love you. I have since the day we met. I initially misjudged you…” and her throat closes off, and the words won’t come together, but this time it’s different than every other failed confession. She’s not nervous or tongue tied.
She’s breaking his and her heart at the same time.
 It’s not fair.
“Shhh,” he soothes, taking and squeezing her hand. “It’s okay.”
She lets herself fall into his arms for a second. She lets herself cry. No one can take away her tears. “I just… I didn’t want to tell you. I thought if you didn’t know… it’d be easier somehow? Because the truth is… even though I love you, I can’t be with you. Not right now. Maybe not ever.”
And her throat squeezes closed, every muscle is quivering, every bone is jelly. But she knows she won’t fall. Not when he’s holding her.
He nods. “I understand more than you know,” he whispers, kissing the top of her head. “I’m not asking for anything that you’re unable to give.”
She looks up at him. His eyes are softer than ever. And he’s smiling at her, like she’s blown him away instead of broken his heart. He’s never been as gorgeous as he is right now looking at her with the patient kindness that made her fall in love with him the first time.
Before she can overthink it, she rises to her toes and kisses him. For a split second he melts against her, and she lets herself pretend that this is the beginning of a new chapter between the two of them instead of a possibility stolen away by duty and friendship.
Raindrops fall on her head, but she doesn’t care, wanting the moment to last forever.
Until she’s the one to pull away.
“I think you were right,” she says.
“Hmm?” his eyes are still closed like he’s trying to memorize the moment.
She’s trying to do the same with the expression on his face. “We missed out on something special.”
His eyes flicker open. “Yeah, I think we did, too.”
“I hope someday we get another chance.”
He smiles softly, and brings her hand to his lips. “Me too, Marinette. Me too.”
He lets go of her hand and starts to walk away.
She wants to burst into tears all over again.
Then he whirls back around and offers her an umbrella that she never noticed he had.
 “Stay dry,” he says.
But what she hears is “I love you.”
She accepts the gift with trembling hands. “Thank you.”
But what she means is “I love you, too.”
 …
I plan to post chapter 2 during Ladrien June, and Chapter 3 during Ladynoir July.

04/08/2022: Adrien tries a different method
☆ Read Marinette's version of this fic HERE
Inspired by MLB Season 5 Ep2: Multiplication but instead of trying to kiss her cheek, Adrien tries something else..;)
Tumblr media
Adrien exhaled a breath as he stepped out of his car.
As always, he found his friends standing by the sidewalk before the stairs that led up to the main building of their school. He shut the car door and walked up to them. A high-five with Nino. A fist-bump with Alya. Then he turned towards her. Marinette Dupain-Cheng.
Since the past three days, he'd been making daily attempts at initiating a La Bise with her but to no avail. From the more-than-usual discomfort evident in her awkward body language and her forced smile, it was obvious the bluenette didn't want her cheeks being kissed. And Adrien should've respected that..accepted his defeat. Except this was Marinette! She was special. It took his dumbass too long to realize how much more she meant to him than just a regular friend. As such, he wanted to repay her for her continued kindness and support.
Yet the moment he tried again, she backed away, crackling his glass heart a little more. He wondered why she readily accepted and even returned the gesture when Chat Noir did it. Why did she not flinch or show any ounce of repulsion back then? Why was she so much more comfortable with his alter ego when they were both the same person?
Maybe it was the mask and the anonymity that came with it. But he knew it wasn't entirely his superhero privileges that allowed Chat to drop by unannounced at her balcony every now and then. She truly enjoyed his company and was far more genuine during those moments. Adrien aspired to attain that level of trust with her even in his civilian form. And if that meant pulling out some of his cat-like charms, he gladly would.
So this time when Marinette grinned toothily at him and offered an awkward handshake, Adrien clasped his fingers around hers instead of relenting. He then leant forward and pressed his lips against the back of her palm, lingering barely for a moment but not too long to make it seem overly forward.
“Good morning, Prin- Marinette.” He covered the almost slip-up with a small quirk of his lips.
The said girl stood silent for a moment as if astounded by the gesture. Her eyes slowly flitted to her hand, which was still held by his own. Adrien took note of the rapidly spreading pink hue across her face as she retracted her palm and stumbled backward.
“Goodbye– No! I mean– G-Good morning to you too!”
Adrien smiled. At least she responded to his greeting. This should do for now.

Is "ladynoir" Ladybug and Chat Noir's pairing name in-universe? I can't recall and I can't check right now, but if it is, I find it hilarious that Marinette decided to name her Black Cat superhero-sona something so extremely similar to her ship name with her partner that she's allegedly not in love with and just, did not think of that at all.

I just finished watching Transmission (Kwami's Choice), and it was mesmerizing.
The fact that when he says that they could be different, it doesn't just imply as a relationship, but it could also be a hint regarding his future as a senti-being and hers as destined to lose her memory being the guardian of the miraculous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way Marinette first describes Chat Noir and then Adrien when she says that she can't love anyone... as implying that one is her past and the other her future, both of which she refuses to accept.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It made me realize why Adriennette has always been a primary ship for me.
In Elation, we saw glimpses of both Marichat and Ladynoir, but none of them have ever felt as grounded as Adriennette. Don't get me wrong, there is love! I'm just not sure there is enough basis for that love to flourish, YET.
While ladynoir is the perfect pairing, them being unable to know each others identities prevent them from forming a deeper relationship, and Marichat felt like a fever dream, extremely desirable but like a time bomb, never letting us know when it'll end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This episode showed us the importance of communication and its impact on a relationship, I loved them talking to each other and voicing their thoughts in this episode! Let's hope it continues.

ML Movie Salt
When I finished season 5, I found the finale baffling and I was quite angry. But the more I thought about it, the more I appreciated it. Now I find it painful but meaningful.
I went to the cinema without much expectations, but I heard the film was okay. But I was disappointed and the more I think about it, the less sense it makes and the more salty I become.
I went to the cinema with my children. They like watching the show, because it’s funny and the fights are clever. But the film didn’t contain their favourite elements and in the cinema they told me it was boring.
What the film is really about? There are things happening, but I see no definite arc. Marinette is afraid all the time and magically rebuilds Paris at the end. She’s like Elsa from Frozen, but Elsa wasn’t the main character (and IMHO still had a more interesting arc). Adrien is just there and he has a crush on Ladybug. Gabriel has something resembling an arc, but his sudden change of heart at the end of the film is a little unbelievable and I just didn’t find the build-up convincing nor moving.
While I love show!Adrien, I find film!Adrien boring and arrogant. He’s just a sad boy who loves Ladybug. It seems that he cares only about having cool superpowers and flirting with Ladybug. There weren’t any moments that suggested he cared about civilians and that he would’ve fought Hawk Moth even if Ladybug hadn’t been around. So it makes the final confrontation with Gabriel less satisfying, because there isn’t any hint that Chat Noir has been fighting for the cause he truly believes in.
The meeting in the library is overrated. I felt nothing. Maybe a bit of cringe. He asked her if she was okay and then he just left. He was neither a boy interested in a girl nor a superhero helping a civilian.
I find Adrien’s crush on Ladybug quite shallow, because it’s easy to fall for a superhero. He doesn’t know her in real life, he doesn’t know her less perfect traits. He doesn’t care about her as Marinette. In my opinion it gives the impression that she needs to change and hide her flaws in order to be with him. I’ve never been a great fan of Ladynoir and I’m glad the show chose the Adrienette route.
In my opinion the film is just a cheap fanservice with bad writing.

Sorry, but I do have to say it at least once:
You know the Ladynoir partnership we all wished we got is dead and buried when Marinette in s6 will no doubt find out officially that the Miraculized all thought that Ladybug and Chat Noir kidnapped Adrien and Kagami and that's why they attacked her
And you just know she's not going to ever put her assumption into question, which she made off Plagg's vague enough words, that Chat Noir was one of the Miraculized. Completely ignoring then that it makes no sense whatsoever that Chat Noir thought he HIMSELF kidnapped two people.
No, I'm not giving Marinette shit for having thought he was one of the victims in the finale. She barely had time to take everything in and since she wore no Alliance herself she had no idea what the Miraculized were even talking about. I definitely don't LIKE that the show went this frustrating route, but this is fair enough regarding Marinette.
But that is also not what I'm talking about.
I'm talking about the fact that in the new reality we already saw it being brought up in the news that the Alliance rings were "highjacked" by Monarque and that's how the Miraculized came to be, which by itself should form questions in Marinette’s head since she KNOWS from previous episodes (most importantly Revelation) that Chat Noir didn't wear an Alliance ring.
But most importantly, I'm talking about that there is no way that the circumstances of the Miraculized, and that being them thinking that Ladybug and Chat Noir kidnapped Adrien and Kagami, will not be brought up again. Not with Kagami and Tomoe being as important as they are.
And that means the moment all if that is being brought up yall cannot tell me that there is no possible way Marinette could have known to question Chat Noir's vague fate of the s5 finale she actually doesn't know shit about.
That excuse of her "not being able to possibly know!" is already being stretched pathetically thin in the last 2 seasons but this one goes too far and yet unfortunately there is nothing in Marinette’s writing in Ladynoir taht indicates anything else but her just writing it off and never sparing it a single thought. AGAIN.
I guess the only realistic hope we have is that ALYA/ Rena Rouge picks up on this massive contradiction and then Adrien/ Chat Noir remembering having said "perfect Alliance" instead of "Alliance, Miraculize me" which is the same memory Kagami will have.
You know Ladynoir is dead and buried when it's more realistic to hope for ANYONE ELSE to pick up on Chat Noir's vague fate being highly contradicting and alarming looking at the facts surrounding it, because 5 seasons of Ladynoir's partnership characterized Marinette is such a way where actually holding out hope for her to not just ignore every dark red hints screaming in her face feels like denying reality.
Realistically speaking, Ladybug ain't gonna question a single thing no matter how much suspicious stuff gets digged up and how insulting it is to insist on thinking he "accidentally thought he kidnapped 2 people"
Realistically speaking, Alya/ Rena Rouge is all Adrien/ Chat Noir is gonna have in this, hopefully with Kagami being there to back him up about the validity of the different Alliance phrase he remembers.
And that is probably the saddest direction the show could have possibly taken the Ladynoir "Partnership"...

Okay, I apologize, but I don't understand all these complaints about Ladynoir and Adrienette. The problem here is not whether people like Adrienette or not, but that everyone portrays Adrien purely as an accessory to Ladynoir. Maybe I'm surprising someone with this, but Adrienette is no less important than Ladynoir; it's just that their interactions are more frequent due to the "Monster of the Week" formula, while Adrien's appearances on the screen are limited to show how Gabriel isolates him. And now all of this is starting to be resolved.
To be honest, I have many questions about your reasoning. You mentioned complex feelings between them, but the problem is that there are none. Chat Noir simply decided to move on (we saw how he started distancing himself from his feelings after the illusion in "Jubilation," and in "Elation," he even explained why). His pushed behavior towards Ladybug has always been portrayed as a character flaw, considering that it sometimes led to negative consequences, which was character development. Ladybug also decided to move on as a result of everything that happened in "Elation." Therefore, there can't be any romantic complications between them at the moment.
I also don't see the show ever stating that they cannot be together because they don't know each other's secret identities. It's more about the fact that they cannot be together because Gabriel is trying to prevent it. Let's not forget that there are other couples with secret identities in the show as well.
In any case, I believe that going the Adrienette route is the right path. Going the Ladynoir route would be a step back due to a series of circumstances depicted in canon, which puts both characters' development in a corner at this stage (I could elaborate, but it would turn into a whole article). It's also not a bad thing that, despite everything happening in the second arc of the story, Ladynoir won't be together until the reveal. After all, they are still the same people. The way the Love Square is treated in the fandom, as if LS is just "Ladynoir and friends," can be quite tiresome. The hints that it will start with Adrienette were there from Season 1. It's as if people couldn't imagine that progress in romantic relationships would happen outside of Ladynoir, and now they're genuinely surprised by the outcome.
I apologize if my response seemed rude. I didn't intend to be rude. I primarily wrote that because I was surprised that you expected the collapse of Adrienette within three episodes. I understand that everyone was expecting the reveal, but it's based on the assumption that their romantic progress had to happen as Ladynoir.
Hi, thanks for the response, and don't worry, I don't think it's rude at all. That said, I disagree with parts of it.
I think you misunderstand a key part of what I was trying to say (I probably could have worded it better). I don't think either Adrinette or Ladynoir are better. I don't think "romantic progress has to happen as Ladynoir". My point is that before season 5 (even before Kwami's Choice), I thought romantic progress would involve both sides somehow. Because that is how the show has worked so far.
You're saying that post-elation, there are no complex feelings between Ladynoir. That is exactly my problem: There should be complex feelings between them! But then there just aren't any. It's very anticlimactic that both of them just go, "oh well", and move on. Frankly, between you and me, I think it's boring.
But perhaps more importantly, I think it's weird. Their feelings have grown and changed and deepened so much over the school year that lasted eight years, and that's it? They can just move on like that? It's not causing them any sleepless nights where they're wondering about their feelings? That is very surprising to me.
Aside: Chat Noir moving on from Ladybug is not good character development. For one, his crush on her was never actually a problem in itself, just the way he went about expressing it, and even that only rarely. Even if it were a problem, "moving on" isn't actually character growth. Adrien doesn't learn anything new or change his behaviour now that he's in love with Marinette, she just reciprocates his feelings. He's still the same guy as before.
Anyway, back on topic: The Love Square never used to be "Adrinette plus some other stuff", and it didn't use to be "Ladynoir plus some other stuff". It was a finely tuned balance, where the things happening as Ladynoir mattered as much as the things happening as Adrinette, but nothing was ever just a simple mirror. Adrinette grow closer, Ladynoir grow closer. Ladynoir fight and reunite, Adrinette have their own issues to solve. And most importantly, Adrinette was impossible because Ladynoir was standing in the way, and Ladynoir was impossible because Adrinette was standing in the way.
(By the way, the show actually did specifically say that they can't be together because of secret identities. Ladybug specifically told Chat Noir she can't be with him because there's someone else, in Glaciator. Adrien told Plagg and Marinette that he can't be in love with Marinette because he's in love with Ladybug, in Weredad. I'm not sure why you blame Gabriel.)
Season 5 threw that whole thing completely off balance, by literally just deleting Ladynoir for two episodes. If they had done the same thing the other way, e.g. if they had a two-parter instead where Adrien and Marinette decide they have to be in costume at all times and then started dating as Ladynoir, and then just forget about Adrinette, that would have had the exact same problems.

I have feelings about that dream sequence in Jubilation that I don't know how to phrase exactly, but I'm going to try.
I think the last Ladynoir kiss means something very different to Ladybug than it does to Chat Noir. Or, not necessarily the kiss itself, but the way they'll view it afterwards.
Marinette in this episode is very clear that she "can't be in love with anyone" right now. So yes, for the most part, she's probably going to convince herself the kiss didn't mean anything since it was just part of the dream. In fact, we see her doing just that in the end scene.
But she's the one who initiated that kiss. She wanted it. And, on some level, she's going to know that. She's probably going to think about that dream when she's trying to fall asleep at night, or when she's bored in class, or when she just wants to smile. And she's going to remember how nice it felt to be curled up with Chat on the beach with their creepy little doll babies.
Whether she acknowledges it or not, she's falling for him.
But Adrien doesn't know that. There's no reason for him to believe Ladybug is even entertaining the idea of having feelings for him. She tells him at the end of the episode that it must have been Monarch manipulating them, and he doesn't seem to question her. He doesn't make a joke about her falling for him, though he probably would have once. Even his little, "Are you sure?" is half-hearted and sad. His reaction here is such a stark contrast to their Oblivio kiss; it's like he's lost all hope. From his perspective, the dream is one more reminder that he never gets what he wants and always loses the people he loves. Their last kiss from the dream won't be real to him the way I think it will be to Ladybug. And along with the hints dropped in this episode that he's still depressed? Damn, that hits.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love ❤️
pick between 5 of my babies? 🥺 GLADLY
(these aren't necessarily my favorites btw. just the ones that i wanna boost!)
lies of attrition
my priority atm, and also a super fun collab with me and @ladyofthenoodle! if you want some post-s5 angst, action, pining, and ladynoir enemies, this is the place to be!
summary: The trust between Ladybug and Chat Noir is stretched to breaking point when a new butterfly holder emerges in the wake of Monarque's defeat. Chat Noir doesn't know who to trust until Chrysalis confronts him with a truth Ladybug had tried to bury: Monarque made the Wish—and she wants Chat Noir’s help to undo it. excerpt: “Chat,” Ladybug said, her voice coated with worry. “Did something happen?” He could tell her, now. He had come here to tell her, to show her his face after three years of partnership, to let her see why so much was suddenly wrong. If only he knew what she would say when he pulled off his mask. If only he knew whether she would stay or go. “I could tell you,” he ventured, turning to look directly at her. “But… it’s easier if I show you.” He saw the moment she realized; the way her blue eyes widened, her pink lips parting in a tiny “o.” They stared at each other, unmoving, the sounds of the parade fading into the night. A single firework burst overhead, shattering the standstill. Red blazed over her face, the fall of sparks raining down behind her. Then her features pinched, and in that moment, every hidden place within him was painted red too. “Oh, Chat Noir,” Ladybug whispered, her expression growing more pained by the second. “I… I don’t know.”
Like Smoke from a Furnace
one of my personal favorites! this was an experiment for me in present tense and internal conflict, and i really like how it turned out!
summary: Marinette and Adrien give up their Miraculous. Ladybug and Chat Noir never meet again. excerpt: Giving up the Ladybug Miraculous was supposed to unshackle them both. If she had done so earlier, it could have been different. If Adrien had spoken up later, it would have been different. But Ladybug knew nothing about Chat Noir except the heart he had always laid bare, and that was of her own doing. If Marinette passes him in the street, they will both keep going, none the wiser, the culmination of all their self-imposed secrets. She has nothing to go on. No name, no circumstance, no poorly-disguised hint, as she suspects he has tried to leave before. Chat Noir had become better at following her rules than she, and Marinette had so recently been simultaneously proud of him for it—and resented him too. It doesn’t sink in until several quiet nights later, when she and Adrien are tucked together on his couch, the soft blues and grays of his chosen film flashing across his screen. She is never going to see Chat Noir again.
rest your head (upon my shoulder)
i love this one so much. sometimes i go back and read it to myself because it gives me the exact toe-curling pining i always crave. i like to think of it as one of those "so close but so far away" stories - one of my favorite brands of angst.
summary: Ladybug can save Chat Noir from anything, except what he doesn't tell her. excerpt: “I don’t think there will be any Akuma attacks for a while.” She frowned, but he leaned back, staring up at the starless sky through the leaves of the tree hanging overhead.  Something was wrong. She could feel it lingering over him, heavy like suspended rain. “Chaton?” “I had this dream the other night,” he said, gazing over the roof of the Musée. “We grew wings without needing anything—no macarons, no magic words, no Miraculous. And then we just…took off. I don’t really remember where we went, but it was beautiful.”  His eyes slid to hers once more, unnaturally bright. Her blood rushed with unbidden heat and she reminded herself why she had stopped sitting in dark, quiet places alone with Chat Noir.

a feligami oneshot! this covers the time between "pretension" and "representation" and is probably one of my only canon-compliant au's. i really like writing kagami's pov so this was super fun!
summary: Getting to know Felix is easier than Kagami anticipated, especially as he keeps following her. excerpt: “Goodnight, Félix,” she whispers, though she does not need to. Nobody is around to hear them. No one is watching them. It is only a taste of the freedom he promised her, and yet it sinks into her with the softness of the street lights and the prickle of the night air.  “Can I see you again?” he asks, just as softly.  She has exactly nine minutes to walk back to the ikebana studio where Tatsu will be waiting to transport her home. She can make it if she walks fast. She can linger a few moments longer if she runs. The vertigo crescendos as she remains in place, watching the gleam of headlights flash in his eyes as cars speed past.  “You should go home,” Kagami tells him, holding his gaze. “It’s not safe for you in Paris.” Félix tilts his head in acknowledgement, but the corners of his mouth turn up. “No,” he agrees. “It isn’t.”
mirror image
another post-s5 fic centered on adrien & felix, but with a twin telepathy twist. it's kind of like my r&r time for fic, easy and cathartic and a fun break for me between other projects!
summary: The voice in Adrien’s head is strangely familiar. It also tells him the truth (when no one else will). excerpt: You are hearing things, the voice said as though in answer. Doesn’t mean I’m not real. Adrien reached for the silver chain around his neck, his fist closing around the two rings resting warm against his sternum. “As real as me?” Yes, idiot, the voice replied with a bite. As real as you. “That’s not what some people would say,” Adrien replied, not caring if the voice was annoyed. It was his head, after all. Well, what would you rather be? The voice plowed on, unbothered by Adrien’s ire. Born of magic, or born of Gabriel Agreste?
ty for the ask kayla 💛 love me some self-promotion. hope y'all enjoy!

In a new post, list the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
@Beatrice1979a Whoo boy, you're trying to open this can of worms? Alright, if you insist! In no particular order:
Untitled Sequel to Friends who kiss (one shot ShadyClaw sequel to my previous Fic)
A Bad Touch? (Funny LadyNoir One shot) (complete and waiting to be posted)
The 9 Lives of Adrien Agreste (Adrien-centric but obvs features lovequare. multi-chapter)
A not-so-Subtle hint (post-reveal relationship smut, currently one shot, might be longer)
I can't wait to kiss you at Midnight (Adrienette fluff one shot)
Twins Die Twice (Felix&Adrien childhood shenanigans multi-chapter)
Marinette's room (Adrienette drabble that may become a oneshot or be absorbed into another fic)
Chat's ears are pierced? (Lovesquare drabble that may become a oneshot or be absorbed into another fic)
Friendly Advice- (lovesquare multi-chapter that will likely include smut with plot)
Adrien's Journal- (not the final title, just a placeholder. Possible title is 'Razorblade romance.' not sure yet.) (Re-Verse ShadyClaw, Emonette/Emodrien Multi-chapter)
Until we say 'I do'- (complicated relationships lovesquare multi-chapter. Will possibly include smut?)
An unhealthy obsession- (Lovesquare, but mostly follows Adrienette, sort-of-AU multi-chapter)
A first time for everything (title is possibly only a placeholder) (my main ongoing Multi-chapter that will likely end up a friggen novel at this point that is full of smut with plot and so much more)
A game of Cat-and-Bug (ShadyClaw Smut with plot story, 1-2 chapters? Maybe a oneshot. We'll see.)
Untitled super awkward teenagers Marichat Smut with plot story- (1-2 chapters? Maybe longer. We'll see)
Untitled gross Gabriel AU story I may never write because it's vomitatious, but my husband inspired the thought and my brain took it too far and now it exists in my mind and there's nothing I can do about it. (Think Judge Claude Frollo and Esmerelda from Hunchback and you might have an idea)
I would tag other people but I don't know anyone other than @Beatrice1979a

11/08/2022: Marinette struggles against Adrien's charms
☆ Read Adrien's version of this fic HERE
Inspired by MLB Season 5 Ep2: Multiplication but instead of trying to kiss her cheek, Adrien tries something else..;)
Tumblr media
Marinette pressed her lips into a tight line as he stepped out of his car. Adrien Agreste. The son of the famous fashion designer Gabriel Agreste and most importantly, the boy she secretly loved but no longer had the right to. Not after the grave mistake she had committed— losing all the miraculouses from right under her nose.
He was friendlier these days and she believed it had something to do with the conversation they had a few days ago about him not wanting to be a model. She had never seen him so honest and vulnerable, and it made her wonder if just knowing his entire daily schedule by heart was all there was to him. Did she (or any of her classmates) ever know a shred of the real him?
The old Marinette would've loved to peer beneath more layers of him and find out. Unfortunately, she couldn't allow herself that luxury anymore.
She watched him hi-five Nino and fist-bump Alya as usual. Then came the difficult part. He turned towards her, his smile radiant and eager. She knew what was next. La Bise— a simple, french greeting she refused every day. And she did realize it was extremely rude of her but again, she couldn't.
She couldn't. She shouldn't. She absolutely mustn't.
Because if she regularly lets herself be touched by his amiable gestures, it'll be twice as hard for her to resist falling even more in love with him.
So as he lowered his face to her cheek, she stepped back and offered a handshake, hoping that he'd comply today as well and go back to treating her like every other friend.
To her utter disbelief, he wrapped his fingers around hers gently. And before she could comprehend his forthcoming actions, his lips were on the back of her palm. He planted a soft kiss there, its sensation leaving a warmth that'll linger in her heart forever.
“Good morning, Prin- Marinette.” He said, lips quirked into a ghost of a smirk.
The gesture was so familiar to that of a leather-clad, cat superhero she knew that she stared dubiously for a moment, embarrassing not merely herself but him as well with her reaction or lack thereof. When she finally looked away, she found her hand still held within his. Immediately she felt the heat of a blush crawl over her cheeks and snatched her hand away, stumbling back.
“Goodbye– No! I mean– G-Good morning to you too!” She responded, embarrassing herself even further.
Thankfully, kind as he was, Adrien ignored her incoherent ramblings and smiled warmly at her.

more than anything in Season 5, i wanna see Adrien bring out his Chat Noir in front of Marinette 🤭

Well, to be honest, Gabriel's wish not to let Adrien know was just a request to Marinette, and it wasn't part of his complex wish. I think that's going to be the crux of the second story arc: it's going to show how all these secrets affect them and the climax is Lila finding a reason and a way to use the information she knows to destroy their relationship and that secret is that information.
There's a scene here that hints that she does learn her secret identity, but she doesn't know who Cat Noir is. Sooner or later, the results of her plans will lead to her chasing him too and intending to akumatize him, and when she reveals him, the villain with the power of infinite destruction will return and Marinette and Adrien's worst nightmare will come true
In any case, the ending of the first arc starts the global plot for the second arc and I think that this ending will be relevant throughout the entire arc. The Agreste's Arc has not ended, it continues, only with a permutation and change of roles in it.
Yeah the Wish doesn't seem to have been involved in keeping all this a secret, it really was just Marinette choosing to honor Gabriel's last request. I'd love it if next season showed how these secrets affect them (so long as it didn't just rehash the Ladynoir Conflict from season 4), though I have my doubts about it. Lila using the secrets, the information she has, to attempt to destroy Adrien's and Marinette's relationship is the best hope I have for this being addressed in season 6.
It'd be really fitting. Lila's tried to mess with Marinette's other relationships, to drive people away from her repeatedly using lies - but she hasn't been able to do anything to make Adrien doubt Marinette, since he knows what a liar Lila is.
But what if Lila uses the stone cold truth to try to drive a wedge between them? Sure, Adrien won't believe a word Lila says... but if Marinette confesses? That's different.
Now, I don't think that would actually cause more than a hiccup in their relationship, because frankly, Adrien is too forgiving and understanding for his own good and I don't think he could be mad at Marinette for long, but it'd be an interesting avenue to pursue. Lila knows that Gabriel was Monarch after all, and she got some small hint about Adrien being a Senti, with Nathalie sending her that picture of one of the rings.
I'm really interested to see where the show goes from here, I'm honestly not sure what route it's gonna take.

ML Paris Special: A Hint for Adrien Towards the Truth?
Thanks to s5 finally giving the specials an ounce of canon relevance in the show, I think it's reasonable to think something important could happen in them.
Many of us agree that the post-wish timeline would probably stop Adrien from learning the truth until Lila steps in (which probably won't happen until she has Adrien's amoks and can make things the worst) or one of Adrien's loved ones fess up (something that's never happened before).
So, how can we possibly set up Adrien getting help in this doomed universe?
Perhaps the answer lies not in this post-wish universe. Like, perhaps the universe of Toxinelle and Chat Griffe?
Perhaps their universe is also a post-wish universe where Gabriel made a different wish. One where he's a hero and Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Chat Noir (whose identity was unknown to everyone present at wish-time) are the villains he can publicly triumph over.
He could wish the peacock was never broken so that Emilie was alive but Adrien can still be puppeted. The Cat and Bug team would need to cataclysm the peacock miraculous pre-Feast and/or Fu-meeting-with-Gabriel, but canon Fu is a coward and it took months for Feast to arrive in Paris. Toxigriffe's got this.
Or you can make them not need the peacock in the end (to postpone SentiAdrien reveal) and just have them be the incompetent parents canon already proved they were. As long as the Agrestes are bad enough for our Ladynoir alters to want our Adrien to get out, the setup is there.
It doesn't have to be a full reveal either. A passing comment on how Emilie must have been blackmailed into giving Adrien the rings, or a "Who is Felix? Aunt Amelie adopted???", or even a question on what they renovated the basement into. Give Adrien a nugget that Ladybug hopes AdriChat won't follow but that eventually he will. One that when he does, finally starts letting Adrien go through what the others are depriving him of: development from reality and the truth.

*slams eighth shot of whiskey* okay listen i gotta get this out before more episodes come out, invalidating it all, but can we TALK about the adjusted dynamics of the lovesquare, stick to the end for me losing my mind about ladrien
I never read the bible so no spoilers there, but spoilers for the tfou apocalypse up through elation/exaltation
Ladynoir. The classic. The OG.
We're in a unique position with them because, Ladynoir has historically had 2 distinct dynamics: 1 when Ladybug thought Chat Noir was just flirting and he thought he had a chance, and one when she knew he loved her, and he knew she didn't.
When she was oblivious, it was flirt central! it was cute! light! fun! In the second, it was sad (we the audience knew that lb DID in fact love cn back, just, behind the mask. yakno, the classic, the og) and somewhat frustrating bc we wanted CN to chill tf out, which, eventually, he did, all the while still loving his lady
Now? NOW???? Y'all it's BOTH
Chat Noir doesn't KNOW (yet) that Ladybug is in love with him. He just thinks she's flirting, or testing him.
But Ladybug DOES know. She KNOWS he doesn't love her. When CN was in this phase, flirting to an oblivious LB, he still had hope that she would love him or at least he lived for the moments she flirted back, but NOW?? Ladybug knows!!! She knows exquisitely that CN does not love Ladybug anymore. (even though we AND LB know that he does love her, just behind the mask)
It's just such a beautiful reversal chefs kiss mwah
I basically just keep thinking of that sad look CN gave her when Glaciator was screaming about how CN should love LB, and that little comforting pet she gave him. Tears.
the other sides under the cut
Adrienette. Our cute blushing oblivious babies.
Tbh team? I'm not sure where this one will go! Don't have a lot to say about it that the show hasn't already. Adrien fell for Marinette hook line and sinker, we all saw it coming we're all just happy to be here. Marinette is afraid to love him and "no alya he's just a friend" I'm just thrilled to see where this goes
(especially now that Adrien has kissed Marinette???? AND that he knows she doesn't love him anymore??? I Am All In)
(but also we the viewers have just a little drop of sadness/frustration too in this because, like, We Know!!! we've been here the whole time!! You DUMMIES YOU LOVE EACH OTHER and this is RIDICULOUS and UNNECESSARILY TRAGIC just LKAJSD;FLKJ anyway)
Marichat. Okayokayokayokayokayokayokayokay
In Ye Olden Dayes, Marichat was the sin ship. But even before that, it was always the side of the square where there was no performance, no pretension, just two people who were friends (but didn't know how good) hanging out with lots of chemistry but no blushing.
But now WWHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOO BOOI I mean the fact that marichat was the first side to consensually, of sound mind, and in the canon timeline, kiSS is bonkers to me, congrats to taylordraws for predicting the future I guess
But! Now!!!! They love each other!! If they're ever around each other again it's going to be a bluSHING NIGHTMARE especially since them being together caused Marinette to almost get akumatized, and that they both understand it can't work, there'S THAT HINT OF SADNESS r u sensing a theme
But okay, that thing I just said 20 words ago, them being a blushing nightmare, it's because this is the side that's in love with each other. Marinette < - > Chat Noir it's a two way door okay and that's what ladrien used to be and what ladrien was based on. But now we have the ladrien dynamic + sads + MORE KNOWLEDGE + EVEN MORE DRAMATIC IRONY and frankly I'm alive
Ladrien. *smashes whiskey glass on floor and screams*
FOLKS. WHEN I TELL YOU. I AM FROTHING AT THE MOUTH FOR LADRIEN CONTENT NOW MORE THAN EVER let me tell u why
I'm a longtime Ladrien stan. I just think they're neat. I just think they should kiss. A li'l smooch. The first fic I ever wrote for this fandom was a ladrien "almost kiss UST" one shot.
But now? NOW??
Ladrien is now the Marichat dynamic. Marichat and Ladrien have flipped. Before, Ladrien was the two way love street, and Marichat was the platonic "no pretenses" street. Now, Marichat has taken on Ladrien's vibe (with some extra Sadness TM), so what has Ladrien become?
You'd think, oh it's just marichat now, no pretenses, they know they don't love each other, easy, *kisses you on the mouth* NO.
Picture this. Ladrien bathroom balcony scene. Or Ladybug saves Adrien. Whatever. All the reasons the show has given us for our heroes/civilians to interact outside their partnerships. With Marichat, they're cursed by knowledge. They know they love the other, but that the other doesn't love them (or so they think). With Ladrien, there's no such curse.
For Adrien? He looks at Ladybug, the girl he used to love. Used to. Past tense. All those pictures on his phone, his silly date ideas, his puns and flirting, that's all in the past now. She made it clear she doesn't love him back, and besides, he loves someone else now. He'll always love her like a friend, of course, she's his best friend, but... anything else is too hard.
For Ladybug? She looks at Adrien. The boy she used to love. She probably still does a little bit but it's different now. How it used to be, all that flailing around, the ridiculous schemes, the presents, the obsession, that's done. He might think he loves her now, but, no, she loves someone else. Outside of the mask, she's still his friend, of course, but, how it was before? It was just too hard.
Basically: THE BIG SADS. These two are exes, they're forlorn lovers, they're each other's "one that got away." But without either of them truly knowing why, or how, or even with the benefit of a real "we were together, now we're apart." These two moved past their unrequited love for each other through sheer force of will and lack of communication and now... now what are they?
I for one am frOTHING AT THE MOUTH TO FIND OUT
