Been a long time since I've made a post of my own on this webbedsite. I've had this blog for so long and used it for so many things it seems silly to try and post specific stuff anymore, but I gave up on instagram, which I was using to post animal pics, over a year ago because I fucking hate that site so much.
Anyway, I might make an effort to post some more animal pics here in between all the random shit I reblog. We'll see how long my motivation lasts. Snakes up are first, I guess. Reusing the watermark I used to use on insta, because someday I'll get around to changing this damn url.
Most of these pics were taken in their respective quarantine tubs not long after I got each snake, I don't have a ton of good pictures on my phone at the moment. Hides/decor removed for picture taking obvs.

I would ask those guys, they seem to know a lot. Here are some links to info, and a link to a thread over at that has a photo of a giant Hondo. Milk snakes to tend to be flighty, as are kings. I've generally heard that proper handling over time can reduce their squirming. I don't know much about behavioral traits. It seems as though Hondurans are capable of being one of the larger types.Ī Sinaloan or Pueblan will be in the middle between Nelson's and Hondos. Your Honduran milk snakes will be longer, but again its hard to say how much longer. Many of these are actually Sinaloan x Nelson hybrids. Nelson's if you can find a pure type, do tend to be a bit smaller. There are some general trends it seems, but because of the high degree of crossing between subspecies, its really hard to pin down a for sure length, behavior, width of bands, etc. So your Nelson's is probably a different locality with slightly different characteristics than say a Sinaloan, Pueblan, or Honduran. There are 25 or so of the Lampropeltis triangulum. Most milksnakes that you are going to find in the pet trade are not pure. I've been doing some hunting trying to find answers to many of these questions. Is there really any difference between them other than a few slight physical differences and possible color morphs? I also noticed the Honduran cost about 2x as much, is there any reason for this other than maybe being more rare or something?Īny suggestions/comments about these two would help me a lot, thanks! So I came across these two types of milk snakes and I really couldn't find much that compared the them.

Anyways I like my MBK quite a bit and I've got him to the point to where when I take him out he just sits and looks at me like "sweet free ride" and I know milk snakes are a close relative to them and they have some pretty cool morphs that wont break the bank as much as a BP morph. I was thinking of getting either a FWC or a Hog nose but I'm shying away from a FWC because I think it would be to stressful for me to handle, maybe in a few more years who knows. I'm looking for a new snake as I have a BP (2 years old) and a MBK thats under a year and I was looking for a new snake. The infertile eggs were all given to various other snakes as snacks.Hey all, question is pretty much in the title. Combined with her first clutch, that brings her total number of fertile eggs for the year to 16. Female Honduran milk snakes tend to be larger than males. The tangerine morph milk snake species has a light orange stripe in place of the red stripe. She laid a total of 9 eggs now, 5 of which are fertile and will be incubated. Honduran milk snakes are well-known for their three-banded stripes colored red, black, and white or cream. If there was any sign of her struggling or an egg being stuck, she would have gone to our exotic vet immediately.Ĭinny is doing fine, she's thin but alert and energetic. The Honduran milk snake is brightly colored to convince potential predators that it’s. We had no logical reason to think she wouldn't, she's a seasoned breeder in her prime, but bad things happen sometimes. Honduran milk snakes are well-known for their three-banded stripes colored red, black, and white or cream. We checked her once a day to make sure the eggs were at least moving down and she did eventually end up getting them all out on her own. While a snake ideally lays the entire clutch in a day, delayed laying can sometimes be normal or can also signal egg binding, which can easily be fatal. Over the next week she proceeded to lay 1-4 eggs every day or two. We immediately set up her cage to give as many lay spots as possible and kept the room she's in quiet and dark. Unfortunately, infertile eggs can be harder for them to pass than fully formed eggs. Cinny has a history of double clutching but didn't give us any visual reason to suspect it this year until she laid that first infertile egg. The ghost morph is a combination of the hypomelanistic strain and anerythristic. Sometimes this is a result of the female having extra weight on her, more bodily resources can trigger additional egg production because that is their natural primary goal. Honduran Milk Snake (Lampropeltis Triangulum Hondurensis) Honduran milk snakes are the gentle giants of this genus. Ghost Hondo, Ghost Honduran Milk Snake Lampropeltis triangulum hondurensis. We have never paired our snakes a second time in a year but snakes can easily retain sperm and some species/individuals are very prone to producing a second or even third clutch in a year without additional mating. Sure enough, more eggs in there.ĭouble clutching is something that can cause some opinionated debates but it often comes from a lack of understanding. A week ago, we found an infertile egg sitting in her enclosure and immediately checked her. Our 7 year old Honduran milksnake, Cineris, laid her clutch of eggs in May and has been recovering well ever since. It's been a bit of a stressful week for us but I am happy to say we're out the other side and everything is fine.

So... whenever I go to a vet office, there's all these diagrams on pet obesity..... But they never have anything besides cats and dogs. How discriminatory..... Let's change that. Obesity in snakes is so common that it's literally the default. In a healthy animals, fat deposits should only be found in the back 1/3rd of the body. As the snake gets fatter, the fat deposits start to develop towards the head. In extremely obese animals, you'll start to see fat above the heart, in the throat area. In morbidly obese snakes, the animal runs out of room and starts to put fat under the skin, giving the snake a soft feel and sausage-y look. **This Honduran milksnake came from a rescue in the Bay Area. Thank you so much for donating your deceased animals to make these images possible. Other places to see my anatomy stuff: INSTAGRAM / FACEBOOK / ETSY

Kingsnake Shopping List
If you've decided on a kingsnake (Lampropeltis sp.) as a pet snake, you've made an excellent choice! Kingsnakes are known for being fantastic eaters and are very hardy, fun pets who can live to be over 15 years old with proper care.
This guide is intended for California and Mexican black kingsnakes, and it can also work for black, Sinaloan, Nelson's, and Honduran milksnakes.
Enclosure setup shopping list:
You will want to set up your enclosure so your snake has room to stretch out, climb, and explore! You will need to set up a temperature gradient of 85-75 Fahrenheit, and kingsnakes prefer mid-range humidity, about 50-60%.
Enclosure. For a young kingsnake, a 20 gallon is fine, and a 40 gallon works well for yearlings. As an adult, your snake will need a 4x2x2 enclosure at the absolute minimum, and bigger is better! Kingsnakes average around 3-5 feet across species, with males being significantly smaller than females. Check out Animal Plastics for affordable, high-quality enclosures.
If your enclosure has a screen lid, two sets of screen clips. Never bring a snake home without screen clips!
A dome heat lamp with ceramic sockets. Any big reptile brand is fine - Fluker's, Zoo Med, and Exo Terra are all trustworthy brands here. Make sure your dome lamp is rated for the wattage of bulb you will be using - 150 is usually a safe bet.
Heat bulbs. I use ceramic heat emitters for my kings. You can choose to provide halogen light and UVB if you'd like. Arcadia makes high-quality heat sources your pet will love. The wattage you choose will depend on your enclosure size and the temperature in your home.
A thermostat to plug your heat source into. Vivarium Electronics thermostats are excellent but pricey; you can go as expensive as you like but here is a cheap one I swear by.
Digital thermometer/hygrometer reader with probes - Zoo Med and Exo Terra make great dual gauges. Avoid stick-on dials!
At least two identical hides, one on either side. A proper hide has three solid walls and a smallish entrance - you want your snake to feel snug and secure. I recommend extra hides for milksnakes, who can often be more timid than other kings.
A container to make a humidity hide. Simply cut a hole in the lid, fill with damp moss, and you're set! Providing your snake with a humid hide will help them have perfect sheds every time!
A large water bowl
(Insider tip: if you go to the grocery store and buy a pack of black plastic food storage containers, you can easily make hides, humidity hides, and a water bowl out of them! Here's my go-to option, you can easily take care of all that for one baby snake for like 5 dollars!)
Sphagnum moss for your humid hide
Substrate - for kingsnakes, I prefer cypress mulch. It allows for easy burrowing and holds humidity well! Other humidity-retaining substrates, such as coconut husk or coconut fibers, are good choices as well. Whatever you choose, provide your snake with at least a couple inches so they can dig.
Climbing branches and other decor - climbing is a must, and vines, rocks, and tunnels made from cardboard tubes are other great options. Kingsnakes thrive on novel stimulation, and small cardboard boxes and hol-ee roller balls are frequent favorites. Cluttering up your enclosure is a must! Rolled up balls of paper towel can make great clutter for young snakes.
Consider a blanket or other visual barrier to put over the enclosure to help your snake feel safe and hidden. Kingsnakes are visual snakes and babies can feel jumpy and exposed in an all-glass enclosure.
General care:
Feeding tongs.
Food for your snake. Even baby kings can eat whole pinky mice. Your offered food should be about 10% of your snake's body weight. It's easy to overfeed kingsnakes - do not listen when they act like they're constantly hungry! Being fed once a week is plenty for young kingsnakes.
A soldering iron, believe it or not! A cheap soldering iron will serve you well throughout your snake's life - you can use it to easily melt holes in bowls and containers to make hides.
A small snake hook can help you with handling your snake, especially if you're nervous. Kingsnakes have excellent feeding responses and mistaken feeding bites can happen, so handling with a snake hook can help get your snake out of food mode and help you be more comfortable.
And some common beginner mistakes:
Don't move your snake to a separate enclosure to feed. It's a myth that will make your snake "aggressive" - it can actually cause more mistaken feeding bites as they associate handling with being fed!
Don't worry if your snake spends most of their time hiding, especially while young. A hiding snake is a happy snake! Don't be concerned if your pet kingsnake seems flighty and jumpy at first, kingsnakes can be jumpy babies but many become much more confident by the time they're a year old.
Don't over-handle your snake, and always give them at least a week to settle in before offering food for the first time.
Never handle your snake for two days after they've eaten - that could cause a regurgitation.
Kingsnakes are some of my favorite snakes to keep, and I'm sure you'll see why when you bring yours home! They're fun, curious snakes with big personalities, and you never have to worry about them missing a meal!
