Year in Review 2023

I did this for 2022 and I couldn't pass up the opportunity for more stats. Thanks @oknowkiss (x) for the tag! Here is my year in review: 2023 edition 🥳

Of Dreams and Death [Dronarry, T, 2.3k] — for @dronarryfest and had so much fun plopping the characters into the Sandman AU.

up here, i'm floating [Mollytrix, M, 1.2k] — for the @hpsaffics Secret Santa Exchange. This is possibly one of my fav ships. I'm glad I got the chance to write them as angsty as I wanted.

Such a Sweetheart [Fleuratrix, T, 2.4k] — for the HPFC server Untagged Fest. A horror coffeeshop AU!

Kinktober 2023 [Multiship, E, total 15.5k] — technically a series but my first time participating in Kinktober. I was worried I wasn't going to finish all the days in time.

Honestly no idea yet. I have a lot of ideas on the back burner but none that are MUST DO RIGHT NOW. But I will say that I'm excited for bunch of fests like @hptransfest @ladiesofhpfest @hptriadfest and @hp-rarepairs

3️⃣ Top 3 biggest improvements in my writing over the past year

Smut!! I've developed my smut writing a lot. Kinktober really opened my eyes to a lot of kinks as well 👀

Tone: I think I'm getting a lot better at matching tone in my writing for consistent characterizations and building atmosphere

Estimating word count: I've gotten so much better at looking at an idea and predicting how long the final story is going to be.

2️⃣ Top 2 resolutions (ways I wish to improve my writing/blog) for the new year

FINISH A LONGER WORK!! This was on my resolutions from last which I didn't complete lol. It's okay, I'll try again this year.

Create a more consistent writing schedule

1️⃣ Number 1 favorite line I’ve written this year!

Harry Potter has a tiny dick. It’s just a fact of life. The Chosen Microdick, the Small Saviour, the Boy with an Itty Bitty Package. And oh, how Draco loves it.

From The Chosen Microdick [Drarry, E, 500], part of my Kinktober 2023 series and I just love the play on words here. A banging start to a banging series 🤣

top 3 12 fics I read in 2022

I was tagged by @pennygalleon in her post to share my own fav reads of 2022 and... wow, it's SO HARD to narrow it down? Like, I knew it would be, but still 😂 This year was pretty peculiar when it comes to my reading, as I didn't really read anything older nor did any re-reads (I did listen to all of the Gallapod and a few podfics of Saras_Girl's stories, if that counts!). Instead, I was trying harder than ever to keep up with this year's drarry fests and dabbed in A LOT of other fandoms too. And, for the first time in years (as dramatic as that sounds haha), I started to read published books again and I'm still all hyped about it 😍

But, back to the fics!

Kept in Cages by @sweet-s0rr0w (hp: drarry, E, 76k, @hd-wireless) - most phenomenal slowburn and stellar worldbuilding, Draco being fantastic with magical creatures, chubby, depressed Harry (and his depression arc is handled SO WELL too) and a whole array of side characters and truly touching scenes that made my cry A LOT. Also, those Malfoys are *somethig else*!! Never before I have been so impatient to know who's the author and the second the reveals dropped I RUN to Lauren's DMs to yell about how much I loved this fic sdfghj

Fool Me Twice by @sorrybutblog (hp: drarry, E, 38k, @harrydracobang) - so it's a case fic but it does a great reverse of the usual Auror Harry trope, as it's Draco who's job is to solve the (so well plotted!!) mystery and Harry is very much in his way, even if not on purpose haha Also, their banter here is *chefskiss*

Open Fire by @slytherco (hp: drarry, E, 38k, @hd-wireless) - canon divergence of what would happen if the war didn't end after Battle of Hogwarts, written in a perfect Tarantino vibe that left me shook a lot and in the best way possible! Ola's worldbuilding here is phenomenal and it also has one of the most steamy shaving scenes you will ever read, trust me.

Romp and Circumstance by @wolfpants (hp: drarry, E, 35k, @hp-bodiceripper) - so it's basically canon hp world but set in a Regency Era? How brilliant is that?? All the Mr-s added before their surnames created such insane tension I could YELL and it was hot AF and so full of pining and jealousy and denial and truly stellar descriptions of era's outfits.

The Inconvenient Death(s) of Harry Potter by [anonymous] (hp: drarry, E, 33k, @hd-erised) - my Erised gift from this year and I'm ITCHING to know who wrote it so I can shower them in love sdfghjkl But believe me when I say it's here without bias, as it's a perfect mix of hilarious and hot and did I mention it's a time loop fic? It features, among other brilliant things, dramatic Draco being frustrated about Harry's choices of running attire, a serial cat rescuer Harry and Tommy the Swan - tell me you're not intrigued!!

Yours Truly by @skeptiquewrites (hp: drarry, M, 14k, @hp-bodiceripper) - ok, first of all: Draco here dresses like Indiana Jones and I'm still not over it and it's been MONTHS. It's an epistolary fake dating fic written in Tee's signature gorgeous prose with brill characterisations and captivating magical theory and I hope I can squeeze some re-read time in 2023 as I very much itch to get back to this one.

The Final Case of Auror H.J. Potter by @pennygalleon (hp: drarry, E, 14k, @harrydracobang) - Penny wrote this fic based on my art during the Reverse BB and I don't think I'll ever be chill about it? Harry's self-discovery here is handled in such a good way, the pining is stellar and it's funny and hot and hilarious AND has Penny's signature drarry banter that never fails to make me grin!!

facedown on my bed (thinking of you) by @onbeinganangel (hp: drarry, M, 10k) - to quote Mari's own words: "Canon remains canon but Hogwarts is an all girls school". And it's such a BRILL idea I could scream about it nonstop!! Their characterisations are so stellar here and they were roommates and had such perfect dynamic and the pining was through the roof!! I had no idea how much I needed a fem!au drarry before I have read this fic tbh and it was everything I could have hoped for in that regard.

😍 Favourite New-to-Me Fics 😍

Impatient to Be Free by @idiopath-fic-smile (les mis: ExR, M, 19k, 2020) - so it's an 1950s les amis lesbian au and I actually don't think you need to be familiar with les mis fandom to appreciate this story? The research done here is honestly insane, the dynamics between two main characters are truly stellar and I could cry over the beauty of author's writing style!! I cannot believe it took me two years to get around to read this gem of a story but I will make up for it by reccing it at every given opportunity sdfghjk

🃏 Wildcards 🃏

steve harrington's six-step guide to getting the guy. by @metaldeads (stranger things: steddie, T, 34k) - steddie is the very first Stranger Things pairing I ever felt the need to read fics about and this one not only fixes what canon ruined in such a gorg way, but also spoils the reader with such perfect characterisations of its characters (not only Steve and Eddie!!) you will actually feel like you're watching a special episode of the series (only better tbh). It was funny and touching and so full of yearning omg!!

elegantly bound by @alchemistc (ofmd: steddy hands, M, 25k) - what kind of Karol's rec list would it be if there wasn't at least one poly ship here? I haven't expected to fell in love with Izzy as much as I did and even more so that I'll be so in love with the idea of him with Ed and Stede... And this fic not only caters to everything I love about their triad, it makes sure to give Izzy some extra backstory (and as a bonus some Black Sails refs!!!!) but it also develops the feelings between all three of them SO WELL! Author takes their time and makes sure they all can get some proper dynamics development: in pairs and all together which I love BEST in poly fics!!

Familiar as a Bottle and a Glass by @queeniegalore (CoD MW2: ghostsoap, E, 12k) - I'm ending 2022 with a very unexpected OTP (and I haven't even played any CoD game, what happened asdfghjkhgfgh) but I'm honestly so obsessed like I wasn't in a very long time!! And THIS FIC, oh my, when I tell you it has the most brilliant pacing of going from UST to RST I have ever read I'm not even being dramatic, it's SO GOOD. The tension here is insane and the dialogues are actual gold of a prose!!

There were SO MANY fics for @hprarepairfest this year (56!). Trying to keep up with the fest was like drinking from a rarepair firehose. I’m splitting my rec list into three: Bratty Femmes, Angsty Boys* and Giggles with Gilderoy* (*and others). This specific rec list is 90% Narcissa and Pansy having great sex and making bad decisions.

This Regret We've Got Accustomed To by mouldy_voldy (Il_Valentino)(Astoria/Pansy, 1.5k, E)

“He may be my best friend, but you are the fucking love of my life,” Pansy snarls against her lips and then closes the distance. The kiss is more teeth and want than anything, but her lips are just as Astoria remembers, the taste of her enough to induce euphoria. She can’t remember ever wanting anything as much as she wants this. Pansy won't let her forget.

Little fic packs a (very sexy) punch. Pansy is SO HOT in this.

Fate & Jupiter by thewakeless (Parvati/Lavender & Padma/Katie, 25k, T)

Padma and Parvati might not agree on everything, but they know one thing for sure, they’re both ready for a change. Padma is worn out from her Ministry job, and Parvati is tired of pining after Lavender 24/7. So, they decide to open up a potion shop in Hogsmeade but of course nothing goes quite as planned because you can’t stop fate, and you certainly can’t stop Jupiter.

Or wholesome double getting together wlw with strong winter vibes

Bit of a stretch to include this in bratty femmes but it was so darling, and Lavender is very much a femme and a bit of a brat in this in a lovely way. Wholesome and very queer, and I now have a crush on butch Katie Bell.

It’s easy, she thinks.

Falling into each other while their family falls apart. Lips connecting while other connections fizzle away. Losing themselves to pleasure while the rest of the world grows lost to war.

Bodies sliding together as months slide by.

It's exactly what I love about Sirius/Narcissa - the sense of desire and shame and duty and fury and hate and love! And the tragedy of it all! I loved how the author wove together the nonlinear narrative, which gave the fic a haunted and inevitable quality - very doomed lovers bound by fate vibes.

Table For Two by maeshowers (Sirius/Pansy, 3k, E)

Pansy isn't having a good time at Draco and Hermione's wedding. Neither is Sirius. Maybe copious amounts of alcohol and a good fuck could change that.

It’s fun, and it’s hot, and it’s Pansy/Sirius. I love a messy friend group full of ex’s (because I am a lesbian), and I absolutely adore how much of a brat Pansy is here: “I led your godson on for months because I wanted to fuck his wife." Incredible!

Disparities by @mean-whale-writes (Remus/Narcissa, 2k, E)

As much as he sometimes tried to spin the truth into something more palatable, he enjoyed the immorality of fucking the enemy.

Hot and dangerous and unexpected - perfect for rarepair fest!

Fully written and will be 600k (!!). Wolfstar + Jily + other side pairings.

It’s a text fic for grownups. It’s a text fic and university AU and celebrity AU that I love and am fully invested in, which is utterly shocking to me as someone who generally avoids all of those things. You’ve got a hilarious cast of characters who love to text smutty, gossip-y things AND you have the promise of Big Plot and Big Black Family Trauma on its way.

Narcissa’s to-do list for the evening:

AN: Molly is fat, and Narcissa is into it, but Narcissa’s also 16 and a vain, judgmental bitch, and some of her narration might cross the line into both being fetishizing and stigmatising. This is also slightly canon-divergent as in this universe Molly has not yet married Arthur at age 21.

Super Rich Kids by @thusspoketrish (81k, E, Drarry)

Draco Malfoy has become disillusioned by the glitz and glamour of the scandalous lives of the Post-Second Wizarding War Pureblood Elite. Enter: one existential crisis, one group of thieving cynical friends, and several terrible, terrible decisions.

Post-war Drarry with major (deliberate) Bright Lights Big City + Gossip Girl + Cruel Intentions + Bling Ring vibes. Of course I’m obsessed. The author manages to excel at the mood, plot, characterization, angst, world-building, sex, AND humor??? Is there anything the author can't do?? I cannot emphasize enough how this fic has EVERYTHING. Do mind the tags, as always.

It’s hot and dark and hilarious and moving. Draco with a coke habit and a heart is everything. Good guy Harry (through Draco’s biased eyes) is also everything. And a stunning, classic fanon!Pansy, my beloved. Plus, there’s Sprinkles the dog, who is the star of the show. (The dog lives, if you were worried.)

This line has haunted me since I’ve read it:

"Draco knows he’s not a good person, and will never be good enough for Harry.

He’s right where he should be."

It’s been a year since I started reading Drarry again let alone any HP works and it’ll be a year in April since I posted my first fic after hiatus. I’ve read a ton of amazing stories since and have been lucky enough to meet a few friends in this fandom. All my love and joy to you on this new year.

☆ Interact, be there, be present: I might have convinced myself to be completely unapproachable so this is me working on that. I’m beyond nervous most of the time since fandom and groups can be so vast and a bit hard to navigate through. Whether I’m participating more, commenting more, replying or (this is the tricky bit) sending asks or DMs or even offering to alpha read. Alpha reading is something I love doing, but could not do so much last year due to fest writing. I love talking about ideas and headcanons, it’s one of my favorite things ever.

☆ Read and write more rarepairs and polytriads: I’ve become obsessed with Lunasy, Dron, and Cedric/Drarco/Harry, Charlie/Draco/Harry and Flintwood to name a few. I can't wait for Polyship Week 2022 in March! At the moment I'm beyond excited for HP Rare Pair Fest which just started posting!

On that same note, I am also multifandom at heart. There’s a lot of fandoms that I love and am dying to write for. Some of these include: Dune, Hades, The Umbrella Academy, Bleach, Ted Lasso, The Witcher, Castlevania and more Kylux.

☆ Less fests and more challenges: I signed up for nine fests last year and I only got to write for six of them. That’s still impressive. I wholeheartedly love what I wrote, but I also put aside a lot of WIPs to meet deadlines. I want to check in on those unfinished works, see how I feel about them, and perhaps try to work on them again.

I also found out about the Chocolate Box challenge earlier today. While I do not think I’ll be able to meet the deadline, I am looking forward to doing more similar challenges that are not just limited to one fandom. Season of Kink is one I’m excited for later this year.

☆ Read more AND comment more: While on the subject of fests this is one thing I am hopeful to do more of this year. To be an active participant in these fests as a reader and commenter. My bookmarks have gotten bigger and I’m ready to dive back in as a reader. Letting writers know that their work left an impression on me! I want to do more of that. It means the world to me when I get similar comments so I want to throw that energy back into the world.

At the end of the day it’s all about not being too hard on myself. Some days I may not be present and that's okay. I will miss out on some things and that's okay. Trying to be constantly present and afraid of fomo will only tire me out. It's what I'm dealing with right now. I’m excited to keep writing even if it’s in smaller doses. 6. And If I Had To Choose by flipflop_diva [Hermione/Pansy, 3.7k, M] 🌼 💞 A Pansmione soulmate fic from the very recent @femmefest 2022. This fic is so cute and the interactions between Pansy and Hermione are so in character. It was a delight from start to finish.

7. Shades of Dawn by @corvuscrowned [Lavender/Ginny, 2.6k, E] 💔 🔥 The day I stop rec'ing this fic is the day the world ends because I will NEVER stop sharing this beautiful, amazing, heart-wrenching fic. The conflict and the longing between Lavender and Ginny get me every time I read this. It is absolutely perfect.

8. Elemental by @solar-settings [Katie/Alicia, Katie/Leanne, Katie/Ginny, Katie/Cho, 1.7k, T] 💔 💫 Honestly, this is one of my favorite fics of all time. Katie is so beautifully written, and the way she experiences love at different points in her life is simply stunning.

9. keeping count (losing count) by @oliverwvvd [Marcus/Oliver, 1.2k, T] 🌼 💋 Flintwood has been gradually creeping up into my top ships, and this fic is one of the reasons why. Marcus's anxiety and Oliver's tenderness. Sides of these scared boys that we rarely get to see. So short, yet so memorable.

10. Mourning Myrtle by Contrarian_Hedgehog [Moaning Myrtle, 1.7k, T] 💔 💧 A haunting, dark comedy about Myrtle following her death. The prose is beautiful, and the story is even better. It was instantly one of my favorite gen fics as soon as I read it.

11. Brighten the Dark by @skeptiquewrites [Regulus/Harry, 3.3k, E] 💔 🔥 A young Regulus resurrected from the veil and post-war Harry stuck at Grimmauld Place together? Yes, please. The banter and back and forth between them is glorious. As is the dash of feels and underlying tension of why did Regulus come back but no one else?

12. Take Heed, Dear Heart by @danni-the-puff [Harry/Severus, 3.6k, M] 💔 👀 Genderswapped Snarry! It's dark, it's creepy, and yet, the absolute devotion they have for each other kept me glued to every word. The way every character is written and the story is woven through canon (but not quite canon) is masterful.

13. Height Difference by @thistlecatfics [Sirius/Remus, 437, G] 🌼 😂 This story is pure ridiculousness, and I am in love with it. Remus is tall, like very tall, like very very very tall. We all need a tall Remus in our life XD

14. Lit Match by @phantomato [Alecto/Lily, 1.9k, E] 💔 🔥 The first and only fic I've read with this pairing that instantly converted me. Lily's character is so rich and a little morally ambiguous. Canon compliant, and yes, I could see this as canon because it's so good.

15. turning point by @duplicitywrites [Tom/Voldemort, 8.7k, E] 🔥 👀 A self-cest PWP Tom Riddle fic that is... I don't even have words for how hot and intriguing this fic is. Because we all know that Tom Riddle could only love himself ;)

BONUS FIC (>10k): Miraculous by @liladiurne [Harry/Severus, 15.5k, E] 🌼 🔥 I'm a sucker for escort fics, and this one is fluffy while also being sooo hot. I love this Snape, insecure, cynical, rich. He has the perfect life but still doesn't have what he truly wants — Harry.

I’m splitting my giant @hprarepairfest rec list into three: Bratty Femmes, Angsty Boys* and Giggles with Gilderoy* (*and others).

A little humor, a little absurdity, a little god-tier brain, a little Gilderoy (sung off-key to the tune of “A Little Bit Alexis.”)

Take Me, Big Daddy by @greenmegsnoham (Gilderoy Lockhart/Rubeus Hagrid, 4k, E)

Lockhart won’t leave Hagrid alone. He was always coming around his hut with any sort of excuse. In the end, the Defense professor only had one thing in mind. A Half-Giant’s cock in his dainty little arse.

Classic, old school absurdist ship. Gilderoy is just such an absurd character in canon, and I love how Megs writes him here. It's impossible to write him too over the top because that's just who he is!

One of the best lines in all of English literature: "For one, the bloke couldn't be more attractive than himself—not that it was even possible. Secondly, and not surprisingly, Gilderoy was one of the thirstiest little bottoms in wizard-kind. Not only did he love to be fucked, but he loved to be taken roughly by the most unsightly characters in pubs—burly men with huge cocks willing to take the pretty boy to bed."

They Came From Godric's Hollow by brightened (Lily/Tom Riddle, 6k, T)

What was meant to be a relaxing drive turns into a night of horror when Lily and James end up trapped in Malfoy Manor with Voldemort and his Death Eaters. However, Lily learns that things are not as they seem, and discovers a new place for herself in the wizarding world.

Omigosh this was so brilliant and inventive and hilarious. Absurd in the best way.

This is so haunting and gorgeous and simple and complex at the same time. Ooof what an ending. I love how Sirius's relationship with Regulus is woven throughout without ever being named explicitly - because how would Sirius even be able to name it explicitly? These two fucked up brothers!! I love them. I don't think I'll ever get tired of reading about Sirius with a drinking problem haunted by his family in OotP, and this was such a perfect addition to the genre.

The balance of degradation and love and shame and desire is so perfectly done. Stunning.

La Petite Folie by ticigi (5k, E)

During the holidays, Sirius was kept from his friends. His mother didn’t want him associating with those below their family. The only person he has access to is his brother. Luckily, he’s slim and pretty.

Hot classic dirtywrong. The author’s dark, cruel Sirius is everything. The dub con of it all! And then the care at the end. I also loved how embedded within the Black family they felt - Orion and Walburga were key figures in the fic despite having almost no screen time.

Peter likes the way that people look at him because he’s a Marauder. He likes the way that he’s invited along to get-togethers during the summers, the way that people pass him drinks and snacks at Quidditch after-parties, the way that people don’t laugh about him when he’s within earshot. He likes the way that everyone knows who he is, and pretends to like him. But he likes the way that Barty treats him even more.

It happens once a month — the full moon fades in the black night sky, replaced with the pink light of dawn. Ginny’s Floo sparks — vibrant green, devoured by gold and amber light. And out spills Lavender Brown.

Such gorgeous writing. A real ache in the chest and lump in your stomach of a fic. Something that'll stick with me for a while.

**Healer on Duty by @yletylyf (Alecto Carrow/Poppy Pomfrey, 6k, E)

Poppy Pomfrey has seen a lot of suffering through her years as a Healer. The regime change at Hogwarts brought it to a new level, with the Carrows putting children on her infirmary cots almost daily. Speaking out against the Death Eaters only made it worse. Perhaps she needed to work with the new power structure instead.

I love the questions of complex morality and loyalty woven throughout and just how deeply real both Alecto and Poppy feel. Plus, their constant fights and sex are wonderful. An amazing fic.

Regulus, traitor to the Dark Lord, is given to the werewolves as punishment. Trapped and confused, Regulus wishes he knew if Remus is trying to help him or hurt him.

My goal for this fest was to write a pairing which had never occurred to me before, and a Regulus/Remus prompt caught my eye. Writing this was very challenging - the characters never fully made sense to me, but I think that’s because they never fully make sense to themselves. I’m very proud of this dark little canon divergent fic, and grateful to the fest mods for organizing this incredible fest!

Also very important: THIS IS AN ANONYMOUSLY POSTING FEST, so we ask you not to divulge the prompt you are claiming. You’ll be able to talk about the prompt you’ve claimed within our creators-only Discord server once you join it.

To claim a prompt, you must fill out this Google Form: https://forms.gle/TXybsbkvkapsSbdS7

The information we ask is:

Your name or alias & pronouns;

An e-mail account for contact (we will send a confirmation that we have received your claiming through this address);

Your Discord ID, so we can have another way of contacting you during the fest. This isn’t mandatory, but appreciated. When you sign up, you also receive a link to our fest’s Discord server (restricted to creators), where you can discuss your art piece/fic, look for a beta reader, or just share your creating process.

Your AO3 account (you must use an AO3 account to enter the fest because the works will all be posted to a collection on the site. If you do not have an AO3 account yet, let us know on the “anything else” section of the form);

The number of the prompt you are claiming;

What pairing do you intend to use on your prompt (if any);

Anything else you might want to add.

You will be able to claim ONE prompt during the Claiming period (29 Nov - 13 Dec).

Claimed (taken) prompts will look like this on the prompt list (red text + strike-through):

We will not list the claimers name on the prompt list.

After claiming time is closed, if you have both finished your creative work and submitted it properly, you will be able to claim another prompt.

The mods have varying schedules, so please be patient with hearing back from us. If you haven’t heard from us within 48 hours, assume something went wrong and contact a mod.
