after your posts about it, i played portal 1 and 2 again and it’s amazing how much the facility feels alive, like in the beginning of 2 when glados is first waking up again and the walls are moving back into place they move so fluidly as though their the lab’s first deep breath in a long long time

ok 1. :o!!!! you replayed it bc of me what!!!!!!! 2. oh my god I KNOWWWW !!! something I've been noticing a lot of this go round is the panels you can see actively replacing and refitting themselves at the beginning of chambers, like glados is putting that last little retouch on it she can before you have to occupy that space for the next little bit. I just got done with the first escape sequence (which, btw, I have a new appreciation for in how it really endears you to wheatley. hes genuinely helpful and it's nice to have someone say "oh you're okay!!!" when you get out of a tricky situation when you. yk. Don't get that for the majority of the game. well done on the writers parts, it makes the twist all the more devastating when it happens hehehe!!!) and watching glados use the facility to her advantage to disadvantage you-- moving panels to trap you in small spaces and reveal turrets and even going so far as to move the chambers themselves in an attempt to crush you...... aaaah!!! and seeing the inner workings of the facility feels so much like seeing the guts of the place, especially when you get to the turret assembly part and all the bits with the tubes.... like girl that's intestines!

I have worked at my new job for three shifts, and so far:

I have been given a set of friendship bracelets and already mailed one of the pair halfway across the continent.

I have leveled up my shirt-folding game. This is going to make me insufferable forever.

Not one coworker has misgendered me! Neither have any of the employees on the other side of the shared break room.

I feel like I'm in Portal every time I use the bathroom because of the... particular vibe and aesthetic of the creepy-ass back metal stairwell and run-down upper hallway full of unmarked doors that I have to navigate to get there. Absolute Aperture Science atmosphere. I'm not sure how I feel about this yet.

I've discovered I enjoy being in a mall when all the lights go out. It's peaceful.

Everyone training me keeps talking about how we always run out of things to do and I am having to grapple with how Wrong that feels considering how much they're paying us. (It's a lot.)

I am definitely going to have to figure out how to ask for accommodations so I can get a stool to sit on when folding things or when at the register. Considering how half the staff is pregnant, I'm surprised there isn't already a stool. Why are we not allowed to sit.

No one has checked my ID yet for my tax documents and I'm pretty sure that has to happen before I work tomorrow. I'm also supposed to close solo tomorrow. Boss lady says HR does that virtually now but HR only had me print, fill out, scan and re-upload a form, and told me to bring my ID to my first day of work.

Oh you know damn well what you were doing mentioning Maxi and outfits, huh- You know my weaknesses too well LMAO!

Maxi, having been around since the 90s, has had a great deal of outfits! I'd argue that his best outfit is his sc6 appearance.

It really fits his vibes perfectly! It'a a really good outfit all around. Also... you see that pink scarf? That was a gift from his girlfriend hehe!

... That being said, best does not mean favorite. I must begin by having that I tend to like older men (shout out to Eizen being 1000 years old), so it's to no one's surprise that my favorite outfit is sc5 Maxi, where Maxi is 45 years old.

But in all seriousness, it's a really nice outfit. I love how sleek it is and the red accent on the boots is just fantastic. Yeah yeah, he's old now, but I feel like sc5 Maxi is so cool because you can see how much he's grown from his past. I'm really proud of him for overcoming all of that. It's not easy and he still caries the weight of that trauma, but he's gotta so much better.

But also, uh... Wow. 😳. His jacket is a little cropped, so we get a nice view of his back too. And you see that chain on his side? Ash has one too! They match! A lot of this S/I's outfits are inspired by my Indian heritage, but she's very stylish and sleek, and has little matching bits with him.

I wholeheartedly believe sc5 Maxi is the most attractive Maxi. I get all ajsjajejwjeb whenever I see him!!! I love how stylish his outfit is and I love the fur and I wanna steal his jacket! He's beautiful.

Ofc he doesn't really age anymore, but older Maxi just has this level of confidence and style that younger Maxi doesn't, and that makes me quite flustered! He has this one other line where he chuckles a little and oh man-

He also takes care of a bunch of kids and uh. You see, I have a lot of fankids- I'm pretty weak for little ones, and seeing Supportive Uncle Maxi certainly didn't help.

Point is, sc5 Maxi has grown past a lot of things and he's come a long way. I'm so proud of his development.

... And he's also really hot in that outfit- He's not a pirate anymore, but he's still just as stylish!

I grew up with this series. One of my earliest memories is my uncle kicking my ass in sc3 with Tira. This series has been my everything since I was a very little Ash, and naturally I looked up to Xianghua as a young girl. Xianghua was always with Kilik, but I didn't really pay Maxi too much mind. Then I got a little older, and had a whole moment of wait he's kinda cute

So I devoted myself to learning how to play him. It's been years since then, and I'm not quite as young as I was then either. I thought he was just some silly childhood crush, but hey, it never went away. If anything, it just got worse and worse the older I got.

I grew up with Maxi, and even if he hasn't always been my guy and I spent a long time in denial of him being a real f/o, he's always been there with me. He's the childhood crush that never stopped growing.

Now that I've been shipping with Maxi for a while, he feels like a pillar of support for me to always be able to lean on. He's something very familiar and safe just since I know him so well. He's the f/o I always find my way back to no matter what. Kyohei may be my husband, Aqua may be my wife, but there's no words that can describe that connection I have with him. He's been a constant throughout my life, all the ups and downs.

Little Ash thought he was hot, nowadays Ash does too LMAO

But I also think I've grown more respect for him in recent years. His life hasn't been easy, but he kept going. He made things up with Ash after their relationship fell apart, he worked hard to better himself, and now he's back. His story isn't a happy one and he's never been a good man, but he's always tried. I liked thinking about this, so here's a few! Unsurprisingly (but uniquely, since Inklings don't place nearly as much importance on the number ten,) Octarians find eight to be a lucky number. This carries to four to a lesser degree, while five and nine have bad vibes.

A machine will work better and longer if some part of it has been brought from an older machine-- the longer the previous one had operated, the stronger the effect.

Rapidly moving waves on the ocean mean you have to be careful, because disaster is looming. Since Octarians no longer live where they can see the ocean, though, interpreting the movements of groundwater has evolved into its own kind of fortune-telling.

Perhaps surprisingly, it’s very important to Octarians. Since supplies are often tight in the underground, hoarding and selfishness are looked on very poorly. If someone has guests, they try to appear as effortlessly generous-- with the assumption that they can rely on others for the same treatment if the roles are reversed. This even applies to a lot of outsiders, since it’s generally assumed that if you were born on the surface but ended up in the Domes, you’re pretty down on your luck.

She’s the kind of person who can’t go on her phone within an hour of falling asleep… needs to achieve mental stillness. Very diligent about washing her face, beak, and aperture before bed, and does stretches.

It does! And she is, though she’s not super online. She’d be on instagram primarily, and on twitter but mostly to follow official accounts. She likes seeing funny tiktoks but is not actually on tiktok.

Her preference will always be the in-universe group Turquoise October (who I’ve already linked in the music channel,) but she can also enjoy engaging with some new things. She’s known to jam to Inkling rock music.

My autistic ass tends to find interacting with kids kinda high-pressure, and she’s super energetic on top of that… but, she doesn’t hold awkwardness against people, so I think we could hang.

Batter’s coif “unspools” when she’s tired, sad, or sometimes when she’s shocked. It just flops forward over her face.

Batter really doesn’t pay much mind to the possibility of damaging her body, and in fact feels a sense of pride and worthiness from subjecting herself to danger. If she wasn’t semiliquid and able to survive much more than a human, she probably wouldn’t still be alive— and even for her species, her borderline-masochistic carelessness isn’t necessarily normal.

She drops and does push-ups if she’s more worked up than a situation requires and needs to vent. It’s harmless but can look pretty sudden and weird.

I’m… not sure. She craves friendship and is very idealistic, so she really might take a lot of shit instead of “giving up on them.” On the other hand, she did kind of cut everyone out of her life for no reason at all when she ran away, but that wasn’t in response to anything other than her own intense impulses.

She’s not likely to get this from anyone in IDBD, but weapons. They’re very popular with cephalopod kids, Batter doesn’t have any of her own, and it the sentiment that the giver thinks she’s good enough for one would mean a lot. She’s not great at guessing what people want without being told, so when giving gifts she tends to fall back on food— everyone likes that!

The promise of strength, for sure— it’s why in the main continuity she’s fighting for her life in Alterna right now.

maybe we’ve moved on from this discussion but! Batter is from a moderately large blended family with her parent (“Dad”) and her stepfather (first-name basis.) She was old enough during the marriage to remember the before-times and is the only child with no relation to Dad Two, but is very beloved by the both of them. Unfortunately, they’re also just… very busy, which is how she managed to sneak out. If they didn’t have other, younger kids to care for, they really might have gone after her, but the fact that they did left them in a huge bind. There aren’t really any authorities they can call once she crossed the border, so they’re just waiting and trying to have faith that, like she wrote, she is going to come back.

Batter is generally pretty earnest and not easily shamed, but gets utterly humiliated when people see her bad aim.

halloween

Batter is in a kind of weird situation, because Halloween does exist in her universe… it’s just not common to celebrate it where she comes from. Trick-or-treating and dressing up are conflicting to her because she isn’t sure if she’s too old for all that. I think she could get into going to haunted houses or halloween rides, though.

GCR winter

Their "winter" would be pretty familiar to her, though, in a bittersweet way. The underground civilization she comes from has genuine scarcity problems, especially with electricity, so shutting/cutting down power for a period is a pretty common event. She... really hated this, back home. Maybe experiencing a similar darkness in an environment of rest and thoughtfulness would do her some good in reconciling her fears about blackouts.

1. I’m a photographer as well as a graphic artist (but not like. A painter/drawer kind of artist!) and, on a general level, a maker and a tinkerer!

2. Fountain pens! I only write with ink, and only with fountain pens, and I use bottled inks/converters!

3. I’m pretty eclectic with music, but my top genres are alt rock, indie, indie pop, etc, as well as top 40s and some rap.

4. I feel like this is the hardest one for me to answer? Favorite movies/shows? Avatar: the Last Airbender has been a favorite show of mine since I was a little kid, but I have a harder time thinking of shows I would call a favorite in recent years. There are shows I’ve liked, and a lot of shows I’ve watched. But I’m picky! And demanding! It takes a lot to earn a place in Dani’s Trophy Case of Favorites. 😌 I would say I quite liked A Quite Place (movie), and I liked Us (movie). When it comes to TV shows, I have a hard time being pleased with them if they don’t end well. As a result, I have a penchant for a good limited series/miniseries (because they’re stories that have an end in mind and the plot reflects that, dagnabbit).

In The Goodfellows? I think I stand I chance. I can exercise my sparkling wit and lovable personality to the best effect. I’m gonna give myself an 8/10 survivability rating. Even if I don’t have the right skills, I can go crying to the person who does and they’ll save me. Maybe.

In Creatures’ Cradle? I’m super $**!%d. 😌 1/10 survivability rating. And that 1 is me being nice to myself. The day the apocalypse breaks out I would probably be patient 0. I am self-aware. I would not do well in an apocalypse. Zombies care not for aforementioned sparkling wit and lovable personality, and I have all the muscle of a boiled spaghetti noodle. So it’s a no go.

Greater Than Gods (Cruz): Well. I’m going to be optimistic. And say that I have the wisdom not to do things I shouldn’t do and not to rock boats I shouldn’t rock. I’m going to give myself a 7/10 based on insider information, but also based on reckless optimism!

Vardir (Cruz): Cruz says this is a lighthearted game, so 10/10 LOL.

When it Hungers (Roast): I’m giving myself a nice, mediocre 5/10. I think I could put my mind to work here; I joke that I’m the village idiot, but I’m actually pretty smart! Unfortunately, I’m also curious, and maybe a little bad with authorities who won’t answer my questions. So I knocked off a lot of points due to the fact that I’d probably poke the metaphorical bear. So it’s a real coin flip as to whether I’d really make it or not.

Orthall Bay (Nines): Considering the genre is “horror” and the game intro includes the words “monster” and “maim,” I’m giving myself a whooping, enthusiastic 3/10. Yes, folks, I am that confident in myself! Once again, I can’t charm the socks off a monster (or can I?), so one of my greatest weapons is snatched from beneath my feet. Alas!

1. Well, writing is a very, very, very, distant hobby since Words Hard, but I like to crochet and sculpt a little! Anything to do with fiddling with my hands and I’m good to go. And like, debatable but graphic design is my passion [insert clown emoji here since Tumblr said No]

2. Oh yeah a bunch! DnD yelling at people, thinking of arson, crocheting, rock climbing and simply vibing. I got into podcasts a few years ago and I’m always looking for more recs, so if you have some, hmu 😤

3. Pls,,,,my music taste is,,,so weird do not let me expose myself with lack of consistency but uhh. Current songs that are stuck in my head include; Cult of Dionysus , Achilles Come Down and The Last Shanty  

4. If you’ve ever spoken to me before, I probably yelled about Pacific Rim to you or at you. Plus I love all The Mummy films and really enjoyed Castlevania (s3 excluded, we do not perceive that) as well!

Creature’s Cradle: maybe a 4/10 and only because of pure spite keeping me alive long enough to smack someone. I’ve prepared for hypothetical  zombie apolcapyses and I won’t hesitate to bap, but will be bapped back because I’m weak as hell. 

Greater Than Gods: a toss up between 2/10 and 7/10! I can vibe and be chill but I also have terrible impulse control so... 

Vardir: hm....I think pretty good survival rates all around? If you ask me to fight then like, okay sure, your knees are mine. So maybe a 8/10? 

When it Hungers: .......8/10 just because I’d refuse to die if I can be a cool creature. Living for the aesthetic can and will drag me outta hell. But I’m also clumsy as hell so I’d probably crash as a porcelain or hold a rooster and perish (aka, real rating is a good 3/10) 

Orthall Bay: 2/10, nope. Nope I’d be taken out in a heartbeat. Monsters can go pspsps and I’d head straight into the dark creepy forest like a fool if someone comes @ me. Half the time I’ll just assume it’s sfx makeup and vibe until it’s too late.

1. If I'm not writing, I'm usually watching video essays on Youtube. My go-to channels as of right now is Disrupt and Aperture! I just really like their videos. Aside from that, I recently got into podcasts. Currently going through Hello From The Hallowoods and Shelter and Warning, which are made by queer creators!

2. Oh oof, there's quite a bit so I'm just gonna put down one thing. For some reason, I really got into collecting tiny astronaut things? I recently bought this astronaut desk light, and I've got a package coming in for the miniatures I ordered. No purpose for them other than I think they're neat <3

3. I'm a bit private with my music taste (even tho I have Spotify connected on Discord lmao), but there's 5 songs that I'm currently obsessed with. I keep replaying them over and over again. Just squeezing all the serotonin I could get outta them.

4. I can't really say I have a fave TV show or movie because I can't really just pick one, but my current fave is 9-1-1 and Resident Alien. 9-1-1 because I just really love the found-family dynamics and how the show tackles sensitive topics, and Resident Alien because it's lighthearted comedy. My all-time fave movie is Flipped! I have the book too and I like rereading from time to time <3

I like the idea of rebuilding communities and eventually societies, but the survival turmoil would be a constant battle I'd have to overcome. If we're talking survival itself though, I think I'll do well.

I've been taking a long time on this for one simple reason: Environment hard.

Okay, that's a joke, the real reason is that I wanted to way overdo it. I'm gonna include a cut here, but for anyone who likes my Nightmare OBDLC, there is a lot of explaining under the cut. I'm doing a little bit of art, but mostly it's gonna be pictures with sources instead-- Sorry, but as I said... Environments... Very difficult.

To start, we have an aerial view with the different segments. Two of these things haven't been mentioned in the story yet, and I'm still tossing around if they're even going to be mentioned or if they even do exist. However, I do think the idea of a central space would be the best-- Think of the city as a wheel on an axel. If one part breaks, the whole thing needs to be replaced.

The main idea for it all comes from my memories of admiring balcony scenes in movies and the thought of having a city in layers, kind of like a circuit board with cut-away portions to see the underbelly of the place.

This is a picture of how the layering would look-- I know it's really sloppy, but I don't exactly know how to show it any better, sorry.

Basically: Blue is almost underground, compared to Red which is a step above. Green floats above the ground that isn't in Blue or Red, which is basically no-man's-land at this point. The tower floats in the middle of the pit.

Let's start with Blue and work our way up, shall we? (Since, y'know, the pit is literally just a pit.) I'll use references instead of my own art, since that gets my thoughts across so much better.

BLUE LINE - SADNESS

Blue is mainly built around factories, and can come off a lot like the dark recesses of Aperture Science from Portal.

I would like to specifically note that it comes off more like the environment from Portal 2 and Portal Stories: Mel. Tight with lots of railings and corridors.

I'm not personally the best at drawing environments, so I can't exactly get out what I want, and that's a major reason why I've been putting off this request for so long.

Blue is a very simplistic area, and it does feel like Aperture in its "everything is clean-ish but it's breaking down" vibes.

The reason that this area looks like this is simple: Sadness is something that Otto feels he has to power through, work through like it's nothing. Sadness makes him more likely to keep working mechanically, just as he did after the Deluge. He doesn't dwell on sadness, and doesn't let it become anything other than a small thing that happens.

RED LINE - ANGER

Red is the one I've had the clearest image of, but I can't draw it just the same because of that. The best way to describe it is "Cyberpunk street/slums", I suppose? But a few things I specifically reference mentally are Stupendium's videos "The Fine Print" and "The Data Stream"

It's a very tight space, but it's got so much there to look at that Helmut and Compton would be overwhelmed.

On the other hand, the easiest way to explain what I think of... Chinatown.

That's the exact vibe I was going for! I just didn't know how to voice it at first, hah.

Red looks like this because anger, to Otto, is a bustle of thoughts and feelings, and it's overwhelming. He can't really control it, and it's bound to spin out of control without him there, but that's okay. People get angry. It's good to have some activity there.

GREEN LINE - LOVE

Green is the one I've always had issues with getting down, since it's more like the ideallic "utopia" people always talk about. It's also hard to find pictures to explain my thoughts.

My very first thought every time is Skyloft from Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. However, that's way too homely. Therefore, after a moment of research... I'm going to say the idea to start with is the idea of a balcony over the city, where someone can watch over it all but is too far to see the little things.

However, with a bit of research...

I think that Columbia is the closest I can get without going insane looking for a utopian floating city.

As I said before, it looks like this because it's a place Otto would want to be. Besides, love does feel like you're "walking on air" so of course it'd be above the rest!

PURPLE TOWER - FEAR

Purple has one and only one influence. I'm not even lying.

Temporal Tower - Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky.

This thing had such an impact on me as a kid. I couldn't get it out of my head, not only because the boss fight was impossible for me. The ambiance was terrifying. I spent hours in this place. It's falling apart around you. The end of the world is at hand. And if you're a kid like I was, then you keep. On. Failing. You keep throwing yourself at the boss fight, telling yourself that this time, you'll do it. But you can't. Because you're not strong enough, because you aren't planning. You're terrified every time the boss moves because what if it does that move, the one that knocks you out every time? To me, Temporal Tower is incredible, and also full of memories.

It's like that because fear can feel like everything's crumbling. It can feel like there's no way out, no way up, nothing you can do. It's that horrible feeling that there's nothing but more horrors to come.

Learned how to make tarr slimes so I don’t do THAT again

Crashed the market on a few different types of plorps(?) but the important thing is my slimes are happy and well-fed

Also I acknowledge that the meat source is chickens but RIP to my slimes they’re not allowed chicken

Took all my meat-eating slimes and comboed them with other slimes so the largos can eat veggies and fruit

I do like that you have to be conscious of what you’re picking up--yes you can upgrade how much you can pick up but it’s still only four different things

Problems can still be solved by shooting the issue into oblivion

Feral slime attacks me--suck it up and then shoot it into the sea

Also I was right that’d end badly, as the slimepedia entry on boom slimes suggests

Still haven’t jumped INTO the sea or been blasted or knocked into it yet, but I’ll take the slimepedia’s word on it

(i dont care to do c! tags bc theres. so many characters. if i dont say cc! then im talking abt the characters) normally i am not one to think much about the syndicate bc outside of ranboo being there to protect tubbo the syndicate Frustrates me a bit but. if phil starts to realize just how fucked over tubbo got by schlatt being erased from the narrative (and especially how shittily techno has treated tubbo) then i really hope they lean into like. the fact that the syndicate may soon turn into phil, niki, ranboo, and possibly the mystery member (im including mystery member mostly because i think tubbo is on good terms with almost everyone except like. dream, possibly wilbur but we'll see, and like the eggpire ppl but none of them are likely options but it is possible that the mystery member could just be neutral) all like. wanting tubbo to be safe and phil is *just* reasonable enough that i think he'd realize how unfair it is for tubbo to have been subjected to so much shit just for techno to introduce even more fear and the need to hide in his life

like phil already keeps the bee duo marriage and michael a secret, he lets tubbo come over and while of course its mostly from the semi lore vibes phil seems vaguely fond of tubbo already (i dont think phil and tubbo have father/son vibes tho, more just like. tubbo is just That Kid that adults cant help but adore even though the kid will rob them of house and home. slightly amused elder watching a tiny fucking gremlin make sex jokes and talk about soviet russia), niki from what i remember still cares about tubbo (probably because she cant redirect any anger towards him without realizing how unjustified it would be kcnsks she can come up with excuses for hating tommy but tubbo didnt do anything that niki has a problem with outside of her maybe having a bad view on butcher army if she knows about it?), ranboo is. ranboo. i dont need to clarify. and then like said theres a very low possibility of the fifth member *disliking* tubbo or being unable to sympathize with him.

people talk a lot about how techno needs to lose in a way that he cant easily come back from without introspection and i think while the rest of the syndicate standing up for tubbo would increase technos grudge against tubbo initially its also like. something that i think would maybe force techno to see tubbo as a person because now theres nothing techno can box (haha gettit. tubbox tubbo in a box tubbo getting boxed into certain roles by people who refuse to let him out techno esp doin this teehoo) tubbo into that wouldnt just. acknowledge that tubbo is a person. hes not apart of the government anymore, not planning any failed revolution, the most negative title to his name is being one of the nuke makers but even then thats out of fear and safety and techno knows that. otherwise tubbos current crimes are nothing thats special to tubbo (like. stealing and searching for evidence in ppls homes and stuff, the latter of which techno doesnr even know about). right now tubbos a husband, a father, a friend, a kid, *ex*-government, a person. and just.

i think that with how much foreshadowing about tubbos execution no longer being a secret amongst the witnesses and tubbo himself and soon being something that people close to techno like phil and ranboo know about as well (in that i want phil to learn that techno did it and for ranboo to learn about it in general bc hes just biased enough for tubbo and just smart enough that i think even if somehow he wasnt told who did it he could figure it out), and with the fact that tubbos lore has been confirmed to now be something thats actively going to be played into? i think (or at least hope) that it might spur phil and techno into finally seeing tubbos side of the story (and probably also get into the possibility of tubbo opening up to tommy and ranboo but i do think realistically either tubbo will try to play it off/not truly open up about how much its effected him or tubbo will at first shut down or go into complete repression mode, especially if phil and ranboo get the story from other people rather than tubbo himself [but god do i hope they confront tubbo himself]. either those two or tubbo talks about his emotions through fucking snapping at something/someone like he did at quackity when reminded of his execution, which as long as its Not tommy or ranboo ill absolutely be cheering on him for)

which is all a very convoluted way of saying uhh. *grabby paws at the ccs currently involved in the arc of clearing up personal misconceptions about l'manberg (and especially tubbos involvement and how easily those around him judged him based off of their versions of the story)* tubbo lore? tubbo healing tubbo talking about his problems? characters learning to see him as a person and recognizing how traumatized he is and that hes not uneffected but actively repressing any effects? please? (also ending note as the cherry on top of this essay that im sorry for dropping into your inbox: im kind of glad that tommys healing arc and tubbos possible healing arc are going to happen at similar times but are still separate. something something its nice to see acknowledgement that tommy and tubbo wont heal in the same way and arent going to know how to help each other but theyre still going through it together. their arcs are intertwining without removing their individuality and as someone w major co-dependency issues its kind of nice idk. you can be there for someone and still acknowledge that you have your own things to go through too and that while you wont be alone you shouldnt force those around you to support you. the bench trio are all helping each other out of free will and genuine love for each other while still realizing they have some problems they arent ready to talk about yet that arent forced to the open because theyre all doing their best to handle each other with care and i just. bench trio my beloveds. the kids are alright.) -🎭🎪 (also as the actual end note if theres ever a need to refer to me as something other than the emojis mask or eyez works fine but the idea of my name being the emojis is also Very Funny to me so do what you will)

Opinions on what MCU done to Doctor Stranger?

i think the casting is terrible, first off so i find it very hard to say anything nice. and i think they took a lot of what’s problematic and tropey from the comics and.. didn’t do anything to fix it? but that’s a whole other issue. as for like. strange as a character. he’s just not likeable lmao. i think benedict cumberskajsveudkeb makes every character he plays unlikable because he himself has an inherent superiority vibe and whilst comics strange DID start out as an arrogant douche, he learned?? whereas i don’t think mcu strange has. the entire lead up to him crashing his fancy car in his fancy suit just made him so fucking unrelatable. and like i said, there’s a certain element of that which is necessary to strange as a character but idk i think they tried to make it an understandable arrogance or whatever but just missed because very little in the mcu is ever actually ABOUT character.

he treats his love interest like actual shit the entire time, even after he’s had his big magic epiphany. not ONCE was there any chemistry or anything that makes you think there’s any real respect towards her. which is why the what if episode ppl were foaming at the mouth over a week ago or whenever was incredibly funny like. he goes evil because the woman he was horrible to dies??? she had a about 5 lines in the entire film, essentially didn’t matter at all to any of the characters and isn’t a character that’s recognisable as an iconic staple of the franchise? she’s not mary jane or anyone memorable so it’s just very funny that they’re trying to use her death to make this bitch seem even slightly likeable as a character. CLASSIQUE comics girlfriend dying man cries about it situation. he deserved everything bad that happened to him because it was the consequences of his own bullshit so. unfortunately i will not be sympathising

comics strange was a dick, this is a fact but there’s layers to it?? his girlfriend died and he couldn’t help her when he was in med school which soured his outlook on medicine as a whole because he took it as being his fault, same with his parents. so like, already, there’s some kind of a reason for him being the way he is other than. smart rich fancy man thinks he’s better than people because he’s smart fancy and rich

he ended up at the ancient one as a selfish move to fix his hands and wasn’t having any of the mystic shit but one day he saw mordo doing some shady shit and mordo did some shady shit to him magically speaking and thought hm don’t like that and WANTED TO HELPPPPP AND STOP HIM!!! so he stuck around and eventually realised the best way to do that would be via magic and such a big part of him learning that was that he wanted to do so for unselfish reasons. and it took YEARS. he travelled and built relationships with other sorcerers and did good w them and then eventually the avengers. and the sanctum and sorcerer supreme thing was given to him because he earned it and he only ever actually set out to be a mystical consultant, he CHOSE to do the superhero thing off of his own back. it’s just… leagues apart. he’s unrecognisable. even the friendship with wong isn’t there. they’re like mystical matt and foggy but in the mcu i don’t even get friends vibes from them. strange wants a servant and wong tolerates him. where is the heterosexually gay married aura of it all

ANYWAY. i’ve read a fair bit of dr strange stuff and literally not one thing that i like about it was in any second of that movie or at any point since. the commercial breaks were the best bit. capitalism saved me. if it wasn’t an mcu movie people would have criticised it SO much but mouse free pass i guess

[art-vs-apocalypse]

shoutout to the folks that learned film photography before or after digital photography. one understands light better because of it. and folks that don’t know film, read about it or shoot it because the analog processes are a shortcut for understanding things a digital camera overcomplicates.

i’m contracting today... 19 straight work days. wooo. but i wanted to write a little to wake up. if you want to read a bit more about how the film/digital divide has progressed and how it impacted my thoughts and vibes as an artist you could continue. :7

film was definitely superior when i was younger. my first classes as a kid were basic and worked with a 35mm point and shoot. i had a lot of disposal cameras at this age. a lot. i had some weird film devices, too.

my grandmother was the first in the family to get a nice nikon dslr camera. my aunt bought a similar model for 35mm. definitely two folks on different sides of that argument. all the kids knew that digital camera was the future. we coveted it and asked to use it all the time. she let us use it often and we all had folders on her computer of what we took. 

things continued on like that until i got to high school, which was equipped with a darkroom. at this point digital had clearly taken over but the school made the smart decision that film was still more accessible for them and to not waste the darkroom they built just 10 years ago. here i got a fujica st605 with an fujinon f2 50mm or 55mm i can’t remember.

somehow i ended up with... three photography classes and use of the darkroom whenever any of three teachers were in the room for the rest of school. oh... and the film was free, developing was free and even wet printing was free. an old art teacher ran the budget and... only 4-6 kids really produced more than a photo or two to complete assignments so i wager there were never any questions about the setup.

those were great years. given that access, the fujica st605 opened a level of professional shooting that i couldn’t afford to compete with in digital. even though everyone was moving to digital and film was seriously in free fall. i made a ton of art. a lot of black and white prints. 

but the thing that mattered most was seeing the process from start to finish. starting with the darkbag and rolling the film onto the canister, then loading the film, then learning how the film exposes relative to an analog device, how hand-held aperture and focus mechanically responds to one’s hands, how the shutter works, then the art of the photograph itself, followed by winding the film back into the canister, using the proper chemicals and proper amount of time to draw out the recorded light, then removing and cleaning to halt the chemical process, followed by enlarging and a multi-stage chemical print development before having a final product. and add in all the mistakes and innovations that happen along the way, one will learn so much about the art of photography.

when i think about film a lot, it makes me laugh that 19th and 20th century painters had so many bad things to say about photography. and to think so as if paints hadn’t developed and access wasn’t dictated by access to technology and as if the colors they’re using aren’t simply reducible to the reproduction of color frequencies. it is all art in spite of that, not because it stands outside the material facts. and this is where these years are super relevant to me. because looking back from a digital world, it seems obvious now that film was painting with light instead of brushes and digital is just better paint.

Think Global, Act Local 2: Visual Research

I started my visual research for Think Global Act Local by going to the St Peters House Library, and looking at the magazines they had there.

Novum 

Novum is a 95 year old graphic design magazine. It read to me more like a conventional newspaper or magazine than some of these other visual communication publications, and in that respect, it followed more layout rules and had more to say, both visually and linguistically, about pragmatic page layout and magazine design.

Aperture 

I loved this copy of Aperture Magazine entitled “Ballads of Sexual Dependancy”. The heavy emphasis on serif type and old-fashioned minimalistic black and white layout night only worked to highlight the photography and bring it to life, but also made the text very easy to digest, and the narrative very easy to follow. Mixing typefaces very subtly with a Comic-sans style sans-serif font made subheadings stand out, and very easy to digest.

The margins in this issue of Aperture are wide and lots of empty space is left surrounding the photography. It may have been a nudge to a wide-border photography framing style, or at least that’s how it can feel when you read this issue. Some pages utilise a black background, and these moments are chosen wisely, the photography on said pages curated for maximum visual impact, the vibe becoming even more shockingly lustful and sultry.

This magazine was very tastefully designed indeed, and has given me a lot of inspiration for the Think Global Act Local project.

Varoom

Varoom is an illustration magazine. This issue has got to be one of the most visually intriguing and satisfying magazines I have ever picked up. This issue gave illustrators a chance to show some of their practice with no pressure to show a definite narrative or story tell; simply to illustrate for the sake of it.

Foam 

Foam is an internationally published photography magazine - three times a year, a specific theme is chosen, and photography showcased from creatives of all different origins and walks of life. I found this issue’s page layout to be really captivating - it is immersive. It lets you get lost in the worlds of the photos, designing the backgrounds of pages in distinct ways so as to pull you in. I thought the page layout was innovative and quirky. It caught my eye.

After I’d flicked through some publications, Luna’s idea to have our magazine in duochrome came up. If we used two colours to tie all our different pages together, we could create something very stylistically cohesive, and something the reader could really get lost in - that was a perfect style to print with a risograph printer. I looked at some riso printed publications for inspiration.

Pre-Production - Inspiration

Investigation of 2 Tiny Worlds Photographers

Slinkachu

Slinkachu is an established British miniature photographer based in London. He has had his work collected in the three bestselling art books little People in the city (box tree, 2009) Big Bad City (Lebowski, 2010) and global model village (box tree, 2012). He started working with miniatures back in 2006 by remodelling and painting miniature train set characters. He then uses these mini models to place on the streets of cities all over the world It is both sculpture, street art installation and photography. The message he tries to get across with his images is loneliness, being overlooked, lost, and overwhelmed he does this to “encourage empathy with the tiny people struggling to get by.”

Visual

This photo Has a clear focal point of the subject about to jump into the pool of melted ice lolly this is because of the action the subject is making. This photo also has a strong composition as the lolly stick makes a great leading line as it leads your eye right to the subject the other model in the pool of water appears to be on the rule of thirds lines although the subject in the pool of water does not have a lot of contrast so at first glance it is not the first thing you look at. This photo has a very warm feeling to it as the ice lolly is melting on the ground and the colour of the lolly is a warm colour. This photo is full of diffused reflections this makes the photo appear calm and relaxing. Most of this image has a very smooth texture as the water in the image is very flat and has reflections the background also appears to be somewhat smooth due to a wide aperture. This photo features a lot of negative space as the top right of the photo is empty this allows your eye to rest from the busier bottom half of the photo.

Technical

This photo was Cleary shoot in daylight as we can see there is diffused reflections in the pool of melted lolly this lighting leaves very little to no shadows in the photo. The lens used to take this photo was most likely a macro lens as that allows you to focus very close to the subject and a semi wide aperture as there is a slight blur in the background and a low ISO as this was shoot in bright daylight conditions.  

Contextual

Slinkachu is a photographer who shoots on the streets this image is no different. Slinkachu specialises in creating miniature scenes on the ground and then photographing them.

Conceptual

This photo shows a warm summers day with two miniature figures swimming in a melted lolly.

Visual

This photo makes good use of colour as the red colour on the bank card pops out as it is so vibrant compared to the other colours in the photo. The red colour on the card also helps lead your eye down the miniature man hanging off the bank card. This photo has a very plain and uninteresting background as there is no significant colour to be seen. This photo shows a few different textures in it as there is the smooth texture of the bank card and the subject and then there is a slightly rougher background. This photo is full of lines almost all these lines point your eye from the right to the left of the photo except for the line going down the card. This photo shows a lot of empty space as the left side of the photo is left neglect. The way the subject is hanging off the card makes it look like he is holding on for his life or is on the brink of going bankrupt and just trying to hold onto what is left.

Technical

This photo was clearly shoot in daylight conditions as it was shoot at a cash point. The shadows seen in this photo are very soft this suggests the light was not very strong and was likely taken on a day with overcast or very little sunlight. This photo was most likely taken with a fast shutter speed as there is a lot of daylight available in this photo and a mid-aperture as there is a slight blue seen in the left side of the photo. The ISO used to take this photo would have been low as there is plenty of light in this photo this will keep wany unwanted grain out the photo.

Contextual

Slinkachu is a photographer who shoots on the streets this image is no different. Slinkachu specialises in creating miniature scenes on the ground and then photographing them or in this case a miniature person hanging off a bank card.

Conceptual

This photo shows a miniature person hanging onto a bank card this could either mean they are hanging on for there life or possible they are about to go bankrupt and are trying to hold onto whatever they have left.

Felix Hernandez

Felix Hernandez is a photographer based in Cancun, Mexico and he a digital and miniature artist who directs his own studio called Hernandez  dreamphotography at this studio he creates high impact photos and works with brands like BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, the red cross, top gear and so many more. Felix often works on location and uses photographic techniques to bring his concepts to life.

Visual

This photo really shows the miniature effect very well as there is a hand reaching to grab the miniature bike this shows us how small the bike really is as this photo compares the size of the bike to his hand. This photo features a centred composition, and it works well in this case as the wat the bike is placed at an angle and is very striking. The brick wall and garage door in the background of this photo give it a real rustic vibe as the way they are lit with the lighting coming from the right of the scene. This photo shows multiple different textures as there is the smooth texture of the bike and a rough texture of the background and floor. The blue in the background in the photo is very striking and creates contrast from the rest of the photo. The light in this photo is coming from the right-hand side and is quite harsh and is creating a shadow of the bike on the left of the photo the lighting in this photo looks to be artificial and shot in a studio.

Technical

The aperture used to take this photo would be narrow as we can clearly see what is in the background of the photo. As for the ISO I’ say its low as they is no visible grain seen in the photo. It looks like this photo was taken in a studio as of the way the light is coming in from the right of the photo and creating a shadow on the left. This photo was most likely taken with a macro lens as the subject is very close to the front of the lens.

Contextual

Felix Hernandez is a photographer who photographs mainly miniature cars and bikes this photo fits right in with that.

Conceptual

This photo shows a hand going to reach for the bike and also shows a comparison of the size of his hand to the size of the miniature bike this photo shows just how small the bike really is.

Visual

This photo features a grand background with the mountains this is a sharp contrast with the foreground of the subject and his car. This photo features a centred composition and, in this case, it works well especially with the man and the birds on either sides of the car. The textures seen in this photo are very rough from the log and rusty car in the foreground to the mountains in the background. This photo has two different moods to it as in the foreground you feel sympathetic for the man and the background with the mountains and blue sky creates a relaxing and calm mood this creates contrast in the photo. While there isn’t loads of colours in this photo the dark colours of the foreground contrast to a great extent with the light and slightly washed out colours In the background. This photo also makes good use of leading lines as your eye is lead right along the log in the centre of the frame this take your eye past the man, the car, and the bird.  

Technical

This photo looks like it could have been shot on location as there is plenty of mountains I the background or this could have possibly been done in a studio with a printed background either way the lighting in this photo appears to be coming from the centre and right as the man and the car are lit up well. The aperture used to take this photo would have been narrow as the whole scene is in focus. It also looks like a low ISO was used as there is no visible grain in this photo as for shutter speed this photo most likely has a mid/fast shutter speed as there is no movement caught in the photo.

Contextual

Felix Hernandez is a photographer who photographs mainly miniature cars and bikes this photo fits right in with that.

Conceptual

This photo shows a man with a car that looks like its past its days this makes us feel sympathetic for the man as he is in this stunning location with no way out.
