Eyo I got Pokémon brain-rot + JJBA infection so I'm mashing both!

Aight so, Pokémon came out in February 1996 - so the kiddos would still be too young to be into that (ages 1 + 3). That being said, it just means Eileen doesn't accidentally hog her children's Gameboys!

They're in Japan for Jotaro's birthday, when Eileen catches sight of Pokémon via ads on TV while chilling with the kiddos.

Jolyne is immediately obsessed w/Psyduck. No explanation besides, "he looks so stupid! I love him!"

I think Jouta would really like Jigglypuff.

Eileen, who's 25 (turning 26), is kind of embarrassed to admit she wants to collect all the monsters, so she gets Pokémon Red under the pretense that it'll help Jolyne with her literacy + be a fun family activity.

Suffice to say, it's a lotta fun! Eileen for the most part reads the dialogue aloud, occasionally asking Jolyne if she wants to try sounding out what an NPC is saying. The repetition of "____ wants to battle!" is really useful!

There's occasional bickering over what to call a Pokémon, Jouta is adamant in naming Zubat, "Bubbly", while Jolyne is insistent on "Fang". ((They settle on catching two Zubats in the end)).

There's also a fair amount of time where Jouta just wants to name the Pokémon after himself. It's kinda hard to argue with a two year old.

They name the protagonist "Cap", I mean, the guy is wearing a hat... They name their rival "Tomio" since the name can mean "Man".

I'm kind of struggling with which starter they'd choose. On one hand, who doesn't love dragons? But also water turtle and plant turtle???

I know for sure Butterfree is a part of their main team, he's buffed as HELL, and his name is "Pea" because they caught him as a Caterpie. Jolyne shouts encouragement at the Gameboy when he's in a tight squeeze.

Jotaro kinda gets the appeal of it, but it isn't until Eileen shows him Staryu and Starmie that makes him go "I need this."

He gets Green ((and he chooses Squirtle, of course)).

He plays it when he has the time and trades version exclusives when Eileen whines about how unfair it is.

exactly like that! though she's not the only one...

edit: might need to add some additional dialogue to this to make it more clear, but a clarification in the interim; he knows about his own footprints. he's just surprised to see something similar already there when he knows he's only just landed. he lifts his own shoe to confirm that they're not identical (and also to reveal this to the viewer). seems his stoicism beat off the clarity in this one, sorry 😭
