A few more questions about PFO:
1.Just how many suitors has Harry gained because of all this?
2. Who ARE all of his suitors?
3. Which suitor has the most support from all of Harry friends and family and why?
4. What do James and Lily think of their sons popularity?
I, personally, think at least one of them would be on the protective side but can't really do anything about it...unless they found a way to return as ghosts.
Oooooo love PFO questions!
Since this seems to be an issue [not with you dear, in general] let it be known: I do not support J.K. Rowling in anyway. This au, this idea is for the fans by a fan who knows that HP is incredibly flawed and written by an awful person but someone who also is attached to the idea and what it could have been.
_________
1. Oh my god, so many! I haven't even decided how many!
2. Cedric Diggory, of course.
Ginny Weasley, for a while.
Theo Nott, whom Hermoine is rooting for.
Fred Weasley, whom Ron is rooting for.
Fay Dunbar who admires his drive.
Blaise Zabini, thinks he's interesting.
Cho Chang because she was an original love interest.
Daphne Greengrass, because she also thinks he's interesting.
Michael Corner, but it's more so a little crush than anything.
Megan Jones, thinks he's cute.
Li Sue (Sue Li), she admires his creativity.
Padma Patil has a small crush on him, but is rooting for Theo.
OC Durmstrang boys and OC Beauxbaton girls
3. Oh man, I'll tell you now, everyone is divided.
Some are rooting for Cedric because in this crack au he and Harry got to know each other a lot earlier, and many think they are cute. They think Cedric is great because he really helps put Harry at ease and he is always great at bringing Harry's self esteem back up.
Some are rooting for Theo because they feel like Theo and Harry really understand one another and are very patient with one another. Hermoine feels like Theo brings out the best in Harry. When Theo's around, Harry tends to think things through more and Hermoine feels like he smiles more easily and is more open.
Some of course are rooting for Fred, especially Ron and George, because Ron thinks it's a brilliant way to have Harry as a brother and George because Harry and Fred make each other laugh. Plus, Harry has never struggled to tell the twins apart, and that is something so important to them.
Smaller groups are rooting for Daphne and Fay. Daphne because Astoria has never seen her sister so interested in someone like this before, nor has she seen someone actually listen to her sister as attentively as Harry has done when her sister spoke about her struggles. Fay because her friends are honestly so surprised something other than her projects and school caught her attention and they think they'd be cute.
Then there are the OCs who have the supports of their respective schoolmates, purely because friendship but like also...solidarity mf. They are in uncharted territory. They gotta stick together.
4. James finds it absolutely hilarious but is also a little put out that he was never this popular.
Lily is the worried one because, look, James may not have been as popular as their son but he was pretty popular, as was Sirius and Remus and the AMOUNT of schemes she overheard to win their affections was worrisome and concerning. The amount of love potion doused things she threw out without their knowledge was also something that lingered in her mind whenever they were able to peak into the living world and watch over their little boy.
They never thought about returning as ghosts. Therefore, never registered with the ministry, but they are spirits with unfinished business and can't cross fully until they know Harry is safe and sound. They go in-between passing on and limbo a lot. But since the Potters are descendants of the Peveralls and the whole connection to Death, James and Lily get a special privilege of being able to see into the living world and watching over Harry.
It takes a lot of energy, though, so usually they do this one at a time and catch each other up on what the other observed.
But yeah! I love Potter Family Opera asks! But I definitely will be sharing my other HP fic idea because man are some angsty. I'm a sucker for Harry dies and wakes up in the past and gets to things over and I want to try my hand on that. I also want to try my hand at Harry leaving the British Wizarding World because he's just done.

okay, so. currently i’m, like, really obsessed with the golden era slytherins? so, HEADCANONS!
theo has adhd
draco is trans (ftm)
daphne is trans (mtf)
pansy is a lesbian
theo is bisexual
blaise is gay and greysexual
draco is panromantic ace
also blaise and draco must be dating. they must be in love. they must be soulmates. i love them together
draco is, like, always cold, and blaise tends to run a little bit warm, thus: lots of cuddling and handholding
daphne is aroace
they are TALL.
like, really tall.
daphne is 6’3, blaise is 6’4, theo is 6’1.5, and pansy is 6’2
draco, unfortunately, stands at 5’10 (which, like, isn’t even very short at all) and the others tease him mercilessly for it
okay, so i have a lot of really in-depth thoughts and headcanons about all of their childhoods, but i headcanon that theo, blaise, pansy and draco were friends since they were literally born, and they met daphne and tori (astoria) in their second year at hogwarts (and tori’s first)
when they were kids, draco and theo took classical ballroom dancing lessons together and did competitions and stuff, and draco also did ballet (because everyone in the black family was forced into ballet fight me on this) so sometimes draco and theo just, like, spontaneously burst into dance??? like, really intense, fast waltzing and fancy twirling and whatnot???
OKAY. so, blaise’s mother. i’ve seen many different names given to blaise’s mom, (like beth and maria are pretty common i think?) but i always thought of her as a gina. she just feels like a gina. and, like, even though she’s a little bit… uh… intense, with the whole killing-seven-men shebang, but she’s cool. everyone loves her. blaise’s house is the top-rated sleepover house.
pansy has three older brothers and her mom’s name is juno
all of them are pretty good singers, but draco and tori??? hoLy SHit. they are SPECTACULAR. they’re so damn good at singing, it’s not even describable. those bitches have ineffably melodious voices. it’s like kind of annoying how good they are
draco has some veela in him. fight me on this. draco is AT LEAST 25% veela. AT LEAST.
DRACO’S FIRST LANGUAGE IS FRENCH AND IN FIRST AND SECOND YEAR HIS ACCENT WAS SO HEAVY BLAISE AND PANSY AND THEO WERE THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO COULD UNDERSTAND HIM WHEN HE SPOKE ENGLISH AND SINCE HE’S A BLACK DRACO SPEAKS LIKE AT LEAST SEVEN LANGUAGES FLUENTLY BUT HE TOTALLY SUCKS AT ENGLISH AT FIRST DRACO IS SO FRENCH OMG I AM OBSESSED WITH FRENCH DRACO
blaise also speaks many languages; like english, french, italian, and like latin??? idk.
pansy speaks english and french
theo speaks english, french, and spanish
tori isn’t very tall. she’s like 5’5, but no one makes fun of her for it, which drives draco insane because “she’s literally FIVE inches shorter than me, why don’t you make fun of her???” “‘cause she doesn’t care. you’re getting all mad and pouting.” “*while pouting* i don’t pout.”
draco has a very tiny nose. so does daphne. they’re noses are so incredibly tiny and dainty? like how is this even possible??? how are they so small?????
DRACO CAN DRAW. REALLY WELL. HE CAN ALSO WRITE. FUCK WITH ME.
daphne really, really likes those 50cm grape japanese candy things?? (these)
daphne gets really quiet and judgemental-looking (EVEN THOUGH SHES NOT JUDGING ANYONE THATS JUST HOW HER FACE LOOKS) in public, and gets all mean, but with her friends she’s just like so nice and funny
pansy wears cargo pants with tights tops really often
pansy and theo wear (and share) leather jackets VERY often
ASTORIA GREENGRASS AND GINEVRA WEASLEY ARE REALLY CLOSE FRIENDS AND YOU WILL NEVER CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE
theo does muggle magic. like, illusionist stuff, and he’s really good at it. like, weirdly good. it drives everyone insane. and like i bet he does it at really weird times, too. like: “oh my god, why are you crying?? what’s wrong?” “oh, nothing i just read flowers for algernon again.” “oh. well… *whips out deck of cards* …wanna see a card trick?”
theo is really protective. would stab someone who mildly insulted someone he cares about
pansy is jewish
draco and pansy have a lot of tattoos. like a shit ton of tattoos. they are very tatted-up
for some reason i headcanon them all getting into muggle musicals sometime after the war?? like mary poppins and the wizard of oz and hamilton and stuff??? idk. i want them to like musicals, especially old ones.
on the topic of muggle things: draco reads a lot, especially muggle books.
okay, so in this one fanfic i read (i read this fic a WHILE ago, and i forget the name and also what it was about??? but i don’t remember what it is and i’m sorry) blaise called draco “honeybee” AND I THINK THAT SCORPIUS IS LIKE REALLY CLUMSY AND SO BLAISE CALLS DRACO HONEYBEE AND SCORPIUS BUMBLE
LIKE NOT BUMBLEBEE, JUSY BUMBLE
GET IT
LIKE HOW BUMBLE SOUNDS LIKE THE ACT OF DOING SOMETHING CLUMSILY????
DRACO AND LUNA ARE COUSINS. PANDORA AND LUCIUS WERE SIBLINGS.
pansy usually has really heavy makeup on. like, make sure you don’t stand at a 45° angle from her face because you will get blinded by her highlighter
draco is a vegetarian (so is scorpius, by choice)
daphne is like always so dressed up?? like she’s wearing fancy cocktail dresses and five inch heels to, like, check the mail. idk. she’s always dressed up.
pansy LOVES doing impressions, and she’s good at them. (especially unflattering impressions)
blaise is really good at rubik’s cubes. like, he’s one of those people who can solve them blindfolded in six seconds and stuff.
and that’s all for now! to follow all of that, some side notes:
a). these are just my opinions
b). feel free to add more!!
c). maybe i’ll add more of mine some time?? (specifically more about astoria, i didn’t write very much about her)

Chapter 345 -- The One With No Pressure
SNEAK PEEK!!!!!
When he turned, he was surprised to still find Astoria standing in the parlour, staring out the window and looking lost in thought.
“Knut for your thoughts?”
Astoria turned to look over at him in surprise.  “Oh, it’s nothing.”
“With everything that’s been going on, I think all of us have too many thoughts lately.  I get it.”
She twirled her finger around a loose piece of hair at the nape of her neck.  “It’s not that, it’s… this was has taken a lot from a lot of us.  It’s… it’s really shown me that my father is not the person I thought he was.  When this is over… I don’t know where I’m going to go or what I’m going to do.”
“Daphne will take care of you, I’m sure,” Draco told her.  “She’s not going to let anything happen to you.”
“I suppose,” Astoria said.  “But then there’s her future, too.  She promised Macnair that she would marry him.”
“Yeah, I still don’t get that,” Draco admitted.  “If he let her go, why would she promise to go back to him?”
Astoria bit her bottom lip.  “Our father sold her to him, Malfoy.  He wanted to do the same to me.  When this war is over, he’s going to be either dead or arrested.  Where will we be?  I’m only fifteen.”
“Daphne’s of age,” Draco said.  “It will work out and if something happens and it doesn’t, you can stay here.”  When she looked up at him in surprise, he shrugged.  “When all of this is said and done, I’m not going to ask everyone to leave here.  This has become a little makeshift home and everyone can stay as long as they need to.”
“When is it all going to be done, though?  I’ve been here almost five months already.”
“Soon,” Draco said.  “Potter was here and he seems to think very soon.  Rumours are floating that the Dark Lord wants to attack Hogwarts.”
“Do you really think that Harry Potter is the Chosen One?”
Draco snorted.  “He certainly seems to think so.”
“Potter or the Dark Lord?”
“Both,” Draco muttered.  “Potter’s always thought that he was all that and this title, well, I think it only proves his ego.”
Astoria’s blue eyes met his.  “I think it proves that Potter is braver than all of us.  He’s been through more than most of us and he’s still standing, he’s still trying to fight back.  If he can stand strong and if he can show a strong front after everything than when that attack comes, I want to be part of it.  I want to fight for my freedom too.”
“You’re not of age.”
“Was Potter of age when he fought a dragon in the tournament?  Or when he flew off to the Ministry of Magic and fought Death Eaters?  He was my age or younger,” Astoria reasoned.  “I want to fight back.  I don’t want to just sit on the sidelines and let someone else fight my battles for me.”
“No one is telling you to do that.”
“Aren’t you?”
He opened his mouth to protest but realized that he had nothing to say.
Astoria snorted.  “Exactly.  I may only be fifteen and maybe that’s not what you consider old enough to make a difference, but it’s enough for me to know my own mind, Malfoy.  When all of this is said and done, I don’t want to remember sitting on the sidelines.  I don’t want to look back and remember being scared and waiting to be rescued.  I want to be the one with the wand making a difference.  Even if it’s only to myself.”
“I’m not saying that’s not admirable, because it is, but this isn’t just getting into a duel with someone, Greengrass.  You can be killed.”
Astoria raised her chin, her eyes blazing.  “Then so be it.  I don’t want to die and I have no plans of doing so anytime soon, but if I can help even a little, I’m jumping at the chance and there’s nothing that you can say to change my mind.”
Draco watched her turn on her heel and disappear around the corner, a frown on his lips.  She was right.
As much as Draco didn’t want to admit it.  As much as he wanted to argue that Potter was all ego, rash decisions, and Gryffindor brashness, she was right.  Harry Potter had been dealt a shit hand and yet he kept getting back up.  Every time someone knocked him down, he got back up to his feet with the mentality that he could do this all day.
He’d even fought the Dark Lord and was still standing.
Draco dragged a hand over his chin and let out a slow breath.  Astoria was right.  When the time came, it wasn’t about making a choice to fight or not to fight, it was about making the right choice.  And Draco was going to choose to fight for his freedom.
Even if he went down fighting.

*   𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐘𝐌𝐎𝐔𝐒 𝐀𝐒𝐊𝐄𝐃   :   asking for a friend (the friend is me, irrationally afraid to dm cherry myself) but i'd love to hear how cherry sees astoria & daphne's relationship?
Tumblr media
me, fawning over you  ????  yes. yes i am. please know that you can always come and vibe in my dms either on the hellsite itself or on discord,  &  i will share so many godforsaken thoughts that you’ll wish you never asked.
anyways, i’ve thought a lot about astoria  &  daphne over the years,  &  they’re a very unique brand of fraught. daphne has big middle child energy to me  ―  the elder yeşilçimen took his pride of place as the prodigal son early,  &  astoria has always been a sickly child in need of more attention  ;  daphne, sitting in the middle of all that, has to have some kind of pent-up, swallowed-down resentment towards both her siblings about that. on astoria’s end  (  which i’m much more confident to speak on, because i never want to godmod the way you might be building daphne’s feelings  &  all that  ), they’ve got a real jealousy there. astoria looks at daphne, their brilliant, beautiful older sister,  &  sees all the time she has  ―  of all the things astoria is brutally, irrationally jealous of, it’s that daphne has a long, leisurely life ahead of her, through which she can take the time to consider her decisions, weigh them up, find out which is the best one for her in the long run. astoria’s well aware that they’re doomed to make wretchedly young bones, that all their snap decisions  &  rushed loyalties are all they’re entitled to, because they don’t have time. astoria’s oriented with dumbledore’s army,  &  makes no secret of it  ;  daphne, to me, remains conflicted  &  doesn’t entirely agree with how fast astoria made their loyalties clear.  (  edit:  should mention that i’ve said the yeşilçimen family, broadly, were very sympathetic to the death eaters  /  blood purity  /  all that unconscionable funky shit. erol was a mid-tier de who lent a lot to the cause,  &  expected his family to follow blindly. that astoria made such an open defiance of that has gone down like a shit in a swimming pool.  )  their relationship is probably best summarised by that two lines from fleabag:  ‘we’re not friends, we’re sisters.’  /  ‘the only person i’d run through an airport for is you.’  they’re messy,  &  complicated,  &  astoria likes to think of themselves on some moral high ground some days, but there’s still a fierce love  &  protection there. in astoria’s eyes, daphne will always be their daft, misguided, attention-seeking, ridiculous older sister, who they’d still take a curse for any day. they’ll be snide,  &  awful,  &  completely reject her at times, but there’s a lot of love there that can’t  &  simply won’t be shaken. does astoria prefer their older brother  ?  yes. is daphne the only person they ever want to call when they wake up feeling awful in the middle of the night, because her presence is still one of the biggest comforts they know  ?  yes.
this is all to say, pls bring my angel darling daphne  &  let me go in six different diatribes about the complexities of the yeşilçimen household  &  the relationship these siblings share. this is also a shameless ploy to say please bring any of my wcs because i had a lot of fun writing this  &  would like to shamelessly send u chunks of musing shit like this  !

I hated Draco Malfoy with a passion. He’s had it out for me since, I had put him in his place in our first years. He deserved it might I add—but now he tried to make a life a living hell. And I, of course, I had to do the same.
He had to have a perfect smile and white fluffy hair that I wanted to rip out every time he sneered at me. So here I was, watching Draco snuggle close to Puggle face like he enjoyed her. Everyone knew she was just something that kept him busy and that was strictly it.
I rolled my eyes when she started to giggle, so I decided that ignoring the horny rabbits over there, would be my best bet. Daphne rolled into the seat next to me with her collar messed up, her hair a bigger mess. I arched my eyebrow as I looked at her.
She smelled of must and roses—obviously with a guy before she came here. I dung my elbow in her arm as I winked at her, her face growing red. “Jealous Y/N?” Of course ferret boy wanted to intervene and get himself involved.
I rolled my eyes as I looked towards him. “And what should I be jealous about love?” He scrunched his face from the pet name I threw out. It made him uncomfortable and I loved it. He huffed before he continued answering me. “Jealous that no one can fuck you like that?”
Daphne spit out her drink on the poor Slytherin boy in front of her who just scoffed before heading to change. I widen my eyes at Draco before leaning over. My cleavage hanging at a perfect angle.
“I don’t even think your small dick would even touch anything-love.” I growled the last part as many of the students started to laugh at my comment. I rolled my eyes as Draco’s face grew red from embarrassment.
He jumped up before dragging Pansy away from the table. Her poor face confused as she tried to grab another waffle but wasn’t able to. I sat pushing the food on my plate again as Daphne leaned over.
“Thank you for that...you’re the only person who can put him in his place Y/N. We all admire you for that.” I smiled as I went to chatting with her, forgetting about Draco.
~~~~~~
I didn’t see Draco for another day and that was when I entered the Slytherin common room, following Daphne and Astoria to their rooms. Draco, of course, was making out with Pansy on the couch. I make a fake gagging sound as soon as I walked in and the two stopped.
Draco’s hair and collar messed up so perfectly he looked like a god sent from earth. Wait why the hell was I thinking that? I crossed the thoughts from my mind as I looked over to the two again. Draco’s face covered in sticky red lip marks that made him nearly impossible to not look at.
“Like what you see Y/N?” I rolled my eyes before answering him. “Just wondering how you look more stupid than usual. Try not to to catch anything love.” I walked up the remaining stairs, not daring to look back at the two.
~~~~~~
I pushed the door to the prefect bathroom, knowing I wasn’t able to be in here. Tears running down my face as I huffed in dissatisfaction. I never heard the door slowly get pushed open from another person till I heard my name.
“Y/N..?” I snapped up to see Draco in my blurry like off vision. I tried to wipe the remaining tears away but Draco already saw before I could do anything. “Why are you crying?”
I snapped back, my body used to our bickering and fighting we did nearly everyday . “Go the fuck away Draco, this doesn’t concern you.” His face grew more serious as he stepped closer to me.
“Only I’m allowed to hurt your feelings, so who hurt you-I don’t mind hexing them love.” My body froze as I heard the pet name I called him to make him mad. He had never used it before and yet here he was. He just said it so effortlessly but rough at the same time.
I could feel the butterflies start to form in chest as I spoke to him. “Why do you even care? We’re enemies Draco, you should be enjoying this.”
He frowned as he was finally close enough to touch me. “Why would anyone enjoy someone crying that’s just ru-“ I huffed as I turned to face him, my face colliding with his chest. I pulled myself back before answering.
“You! You would enjoy someone crying Draco.” I watched as pain flashes on his face as it went back to being cold. He gripped my neck before pulling me close. My lips nearly on mine and yet I could still feel the warmth from them.
“I don’t like brats Y/N, and you are actually like a brat right now.” I pulled away from his grip as I looked at him. The fire in each of our eyes growing darker as he finally gripped my cheeks and smashed his lips onto mine. Hoisting my body onto the thin ledge of the sink.
I gasped as Draco’s tongue filled my mouth and made salvia run down my chin. My body molded against his as our hands ran down each other’s body. Taking a free hand to usher himself between my legs, claiming his spot. His other hand gripped the back of my throat as it pulled my head up to look at him.
His dilated pupils looked into mine as his hair was thrown and messy. He looked breathtaking as he growled into my neck. Sucking roughly and leaving a spot to claim me. My hands raked through his hair and I pulled on it, bringing him closer to me.
He suddenly stopped as he gripped my throat and threw me back, breaking the mirror that sat behind me. I gripped his hand that sat on my throat trying to relieve the pressure on my neck. He ignored my pleas as his free hand touched my thigh.
I jumped as his cold hand touched my burning hot thigh. He slowly raked a finger higher and higher. Getting close to my soaking wet core from our making out. I gasped slightly as I felt him push aside my panties and run his finger through my folds.
I moaned lightly when he entered the same finger that only teased me. Starting to make a steady pace before he added another finger. His other hand that was still around my throat, grew lighter in pressure as he slipped his thumb into my mouth.
Trying to keep my quiet as he continued to thrust his fingers into me. I felt a slow burning pressure build up in my lower stomach that made me want to cry out. Draco noticed this as well as he took his thumb and rubbed circles on my sensitive bud.
I felt my body jerk in response as I came all over his fingers. My body started to shake as my high hit me at once. When I was done, he let go of my throat and even took his fingers out. Bring them up to his lips and grunting at the taste.
I felt my body kick into overdrive again as it was ready to go a second round. I peered into Draco’s eyes as they darkened. He grew closer to me when the doors open and people started to walk in. He pulled me off the sink in a hurry, nearly dragging me onto the floor.
He just watched as the other students stumbled in but stopped when they saw me and Draco. His talk figure and scary eyes made them run out again before they could even speak. When we were alone again, I tried to speak to him when he started to walk away.
“Don’t let me catch you crying again.”
~~~~~~
I huffed as I watched countless students make out with each other in the party. Slytherin threw yet again, another party after their victory against Ravenclaw. I was dragged by Daphne and her telling me that I needed to get laid. Apparently I was too “pent up in feelings” or whatever the fuck that meant.
I looked around for Draco, trying to make it less obvious to Daphne and to anybody else. He was usually here, making out with Pansy or Astoria. I couldn’t find him but it grew worse when Daphne left me alone to go with Mr. Broomcloset guy.
Another student walked up to me, pushing a drink into my hand and I decided fuck it. A few shots in, I was on a random guys lap making out. I had now turned into Pansy when she made out with Draco.
I felt my dress get looser as someone gripped my waist and pulled me out of his lap. “What the hell!” I looked up to Draco with a pissed look on his face as he dragged me away. “What gives Malfoy!” He ignored me as we left the party. Dragging me into a random closet and slamming the door behind me.
I faced him and a pissed look before he smashed his lips onto mine. My body springing into action from the alcohol courage I had. He rammed my body into the nearest wall and gripped my throat. “Open” I opened my mouth and he spit into it, his dark eyes watching me swallow it.
“Since you want to act like a slut, you’re going to be treated like one.” I watched him as he started to unzip his pants, making me get on my knees. “Suck.” I licked his head as pre-cum started to leak out. Taking my hand before gripping his hard length.
I took his dick into my mouth and heard him hiss in satisfaction. I started to make a steady pace as I bobbed my head. He gripped my hair and thrusted his hips, making his dick hit the back of my throat. I gagged on it and even felt tears form in my eyes.
His thrusts started to become slower but his grip on the back of head grew iron tight. Not letting me move at all. His grunts became louder as he thrusted faster into me. And with one last thrust he came into my mouth. I tried to swallow the large load but had trouble keeping it from spilling.
He gripped my wrist as he pulled me up, making me look into his eyes. My knees were now sore and even had scratches from his hard thrusts. I looked into his eyes as he kissed me again. Pulling away and demanding me to hope up.
He pressed my back into the cold brick wall as he pushed my dress up allowing him to see where to line up. Having little time to get ready, he slit me down onto him as I wrapped my legs against him.
I moaned at the feeling of him filling me up completely. He was large and thick so it took me a moment to get used to how wide he stretched me. I wiggled my hips when I told him I was ready.
He grabbed my hips and started to thrust his hips up. My back hurt as it kept hitting the brick wall, just hitting my spine. The pain mixed with the pleasure caused me to throw my head back. Hitting my head in the process. Using the bookshelf beside me and Draco’s shoulder for support.
He continued to thrust up, causing the tiny room to grow steamy. Our moans and skin against skin filled the room as he started to nip at my upper chest. Leaving little marks here and there. I felt the same pressure start to build in my stomach and could tell Draco was getting close as well.
With a couple more thrusts, me and Draco finally came at last as I threw my head on his shoulder. He waited for me to catch my breath.
And I felt the butterflies again.
~~~~~~
I sat in the common room beside Daphne when Pansy busted through the doors. We both looked up to see her crying as Draco finally walked in. We caught eyes but I was the first to break the contact. Daphne looked confused before asking.
“What did you do now?” He finally looked away from me before looking at the door Pansy had previously slammed. “I told her I was in love with someone else.” I could feel my stomach drop as I listened to the two of them. I finally looked up and saw that Draco was looking at his feet.
“You in love? That’s new, don’t you agree Y/N.” Draco looked over to see my reaction as I just simply answered. “He’s allowed to love Daphne, leave him be.” Daphne looked at me shocked that I hadn’t made fun of Draco. Her face growing less shocked when she saw Draco was looking towards us.
I felt the butterflies again when he looked at me like that.
~~~~~~
I laid beside Draco in his bed as he raked my hands on my back. Rubbing lazy circles as he hummed to me. We sat in silence, besides his singing, savoring the moment we were in.
It was an intimate moment that I wanted to cherish as I allowed to him to always him to me after. It wasn’t until he started talking that the same butterflies started to grow again.
“I love you.” I turned to look at him, seeing his face gentle as ever. I wanted to whisper back but the butterflies grew into elephants. He awaited my response as I looked into his eyes. A huge smile growing my face as he returned one as well.
“I love you more.”
Choose Me Instead II Draco Malfoy x Reader II Chapter 22 of 27: Astoria
Summary: Pretending to be in a relationship with Draco Malfoy to get back at your ex might have not been the smartest idea you ever had. Especially during your last year of Hogwarts where you should be focusing on exams and your future plans. However, you were just pretending. There was no way in hell you could actually catch feelings for someone like Malfoy. … Right?
Choose Me Instead Masterlist
Words: 2.5k (it’s rather short today, ik) Pairing: Draco Malfoy x fem!Reader, post war Warnings: none
Tumblr media
Happiness.
That was one of the feelings Astoria expected to set in when Pansy told her the news at breakfast.
Happiness because you’d be no longer a concern of hers. Relief that the plan Mrs. Malfoy told her about worked. And hope – hope for a future with him. Not the man she loved but the man she needed. Weeks and months she had spent worrying, plotting, desperately trying to find a way to get you out of the picture – and now you were. However, she felt none of what she had expected. Because just when Pansy finished her sentence, Astoria’s gaze landed on Draco who came through the doors of the Great Hall, accompanied by Theo and Blaise.
Her stomach plummeted at the sight of their grim faces. They weren’t talking or laughing. Even Blaise who was always ready to crack a joke in the most inappropriate situations walked towards their table with a blank expression on his face. Theo kept glancing at Draco, worry written all over his forehead. The same worry that filled Astoria when she saw his pale, grey face.
Draco must not have gotten a lot of sleep the night prior, judging by the dark circles underneath his eyes which he kept locked on the ground and then on the plate as soon as he sat down. Astoria watched him playing mindlessly with the knife next to his plate and didn’t seem to notice how Theo put a piece of bread on it.
“Eat something,” he said but the blond man didn’t react. Any remaining hunger left Astoria’s body.
“He looks like shit,” Daphne stated in between bites. She had turned her head in the direction of the Trio as well, sharing a knowing glance with Theodore.
Astoria crinkled her nose as she looked her sister. Even with no make-up and in an oversized sweater was she the prettiest girl at this table.
“He does,” Pansy agreed. “But he’ll recover, right? I mean, that little adventure he and that Gryffindor had was just that, wasn’t it?” She looked at her friends. “An adventure? It’s time for him to return to the real world.”
Return to the real world. Astoria nodded. Yes, it was time for him to do just that. Return to the real world with her. But why did she steel feel this way? Why did the sting in her heart not fade?
“I’m not sure.” Daphne shrugged. “I know first-hand what he’s like after an adventure … It’s different. He probably loved her.”
Astoria suppressed the urge to snort. Suddenly, her sister turned her head and looked directly at Astoria. “Makes you wonder …”
The younger Greengrass narrowed her eyes and her cheeks turned red.
“Wonder about what?”, Pansy asked, completely clueless.
“If it’s worth it.”
“If you have something to say, Daphne, say it,” Astoria hissed. Pansy looked back and forth between the two sisters with wide eyes, irritated about the sudden change in the conversation.
Daphne didn’t flinch. She leaned forward and spoke with a lowered voice: “What did Mrs. Malfoy say to you yesterday?”
Anger bubbled up inside of Astoria. The same anger that had plagued her for so long. She had thought it’d leave her as soon as you were no longer around but only now did she realize that it wasn’t you who made her so mad. “Are you suggesting …?”
“I’m not suggesting anything,” her sister cut her off. “I’m asking you a question.”
Astoria put down her knife abruptly and stood up with so much force that she hit her leg on the table and a glass fell over. She was done with this. With her.
Daphne rolled her eyes and took a bite from her toast. “Where are you going?”, she then asked.
“The library,” her sister said in a sharp tone. “A place where I don’t have to listen to your groundless accusations and your nonsense about sleeping with Draco.” She tried to sound stern when she spoke but the anger kept scratching at her tone and a smug smile showed on her sisters face. “What?”, Astoria spat out.
“I’m right then?”, Daphne asked. “You and Mrs. Malfoy had something to do with this very sudden end of their relationship? Let me guess, Mother was involved as well?”
The amusement in her voice disgusted Astoria. She opened her mouth to say something and then closed it again. With a huff, she turned on her heels and left the Great Hall, balling her delicate fingers into fists when she passed Draco who still hadn’t touched his food.
“That was mean, Daphne,” she heard Pansy say behind her.
“It was necessary.”
Once the chatter from the other students began to fade away behind her, the anger vanished and got replaced by tears that filled her eyes. She didn’t know if she was angry or sad or maybe both. All she knew was that she wasn’t supposed to feel this way. When Mrs. Malfoy had come to Hogwarts, she had told her about how she’d handle this mess. “Don’t worry, sweetheart,” Draco’s mother said and squeezed her cold, trembling hands. “It’ll be fine. I promise you.” And Astoria had been relieved – relieved that someone seemed to care for her. For her pain and fears and by Merlin, in that moment she wished for nothing more than for her own mother to be more like Mrs. Malfoy. A wish that now might even come true. However, seeing the pain she caused Draco left her feeling guilty and ashamed instead of hopeful.
A body slamming into hers pulled her back into reality. Astoria stumbled and caught herself in the last minute. “Oh,” she let out a sharp breath.
“Sor-,” you swallowed the last syllable of the word.
Astoria’s breath got caught in her throat. You looked surprisingly well put together. She didn’t know what she had expected – after all, she didn’t think you to be someone who’d suffer publicly but seeing you so calm and tidy did leave her a little irritated. Your eyes were the ones that betrayed you – looking past the blank expression in them, Astoria noticed the slight redness. It was the same redness she had seen one too many times in the mirror after nights spent crying. You must have tried to fix it but Astoria still saw the residues of the restlessness you had endured the night prior.
“I’m sorry.” The words slipped out and she wasn’t sure if she meant the bump in that happened just now.
You looked at her as if you were searching for something hostile in the sudden friendliness of Astoria’s tone. When you didn’t find anything, you mumbled: “It’s fine.” You kept on walking down the hall.
“I –”, Astoria started but then closed her mouth again.
You stopped, slowly turning around. “What?” The blank expression was no longer seen on your face. It got replaced with cold annoyance. You looked at her expectantly but Astoria was at a loss for words. “I’m surprised you didn’t already prepare for this moment.”
Astoria blinked. “Excuse me?”
“He’s yours, congrats,” you said bitterly. “You won. You and your family and this fucked up world you’re still trying to uphold won.”
There it was again – the same guilt she had felt when she looked at Draco during breakfast. “I …I did what I had to do.”
“Right,” you scoffed. “You’re a Slytherin after all.”
A line appeared between Astoria’s brows but you had turned your back on her once more. “Get off your high horse for once, will you?”, she called after you, her wits returning.
You stopped but face her.
“Stop acting all high and mighty,” Astoria continued coldly. “You made the decision to break up with him.”
“I had no choice.”
Astoria wondered if she had only imagined the words from your mouth. They were spoken so softly, so broken, they barely reached her. “That’s a lie and you know it.”
You stood there for another second before slowly beginning to walk down the long hallway. Astoria watched you, frozen in place. Everything she ever wanted was right in front of her. The only thing she had to do was reach for it. So what was stopping her?
 ***
It was guilt that stopped her. Guilt that didn’t leave Astoria for days.
It came in waves – washing over her when Draco sat next to her in class, his eyes searching for you in the classroom. It threatened to drown her, suffocate her, when she saw how the corners of his mouth twitched when he heard you talk to your friends. He was trying so desperately to hide his pain, to return to the way he was at the beginning of the school year. Before you had the chance to steal his heart and crush it mere moments later. However, Astoria saw right through him. He was too far gone to return to the man he was before he found you. Now, whenever Astoria pretended not to look, Draco watched you from the shadows of the last row and the bleachers of the Quidditch field. In those moments, the guilt returned, accompanied by regret and shame and she wondered if it was worth it.
Just like Daphne had asked.
Astoria never saw the two of you together again. You stayed with your friends, the Weasley girl and Granger rarely leaving you out of their sight. The occasional hateful glance was sent your way by Weasley but you full-heartedly ignored her. Her, and Draco, and the rest of the Slytherins. Well, not all of them. One early evening, the sun had just begun to set, she saw Blaise and Theo sitting down next to you outside but Pansy had pulled her away before Astoria got the chance to eavesdrop.
A week passed and Draco remained only a shell of himself.
“His nightmares returned,” Blaise told her one afternoon in the common room.
“It’s not like they ever left,” Theo chimed in, not looking up from the book in his lap.
Blaise rolled his eyes. “They’re way worse now though,” he replied and leaned over to Astoria. “He’s using that potion again.”
“He’ll be fine, Blaise,” Theo closed the book and shot his friend a warning glance. “Stop gossiping now.”
Astoria felt the glare from her sister from across the common room in that moment. Happy now?, her eyes seemed to ask. Are you finally happy, sister?
No. No, she wasn’t.
And still, she wouldn’t a change a thing.
 ***
It was late when Astoria left the library and made her way back down to the Slytherin common room. Her eyes burned, her neck hurt, and she kept yawning, longing for her soft pillow and warm blanket.
BANG.
Astoria tripped on the steps and barely caught herself by grabbing onto the railing. She continued downstairs, slower now, almost tip-toeing. Reaching the end of the stairs and the hallway, she guessed the sound had come from the end of it. She stopped and pulled out her wand. All sorts of ghosts and creatures found their way into the castle from time to time and Astoria was not keen on a night trip to the hospital wing.
“Screw you, Malfoy!”
Astoria’s eyes widened. You.
“Oh, we’re using last names again?”
Draco.
“Fine, Y/L/N.”
Two figures appeared at the end of the hallway and Astoria quickly jumped to the side, hiding behind the statue of a knight. Her heart pounded in her chest. She should leave. It was the proper thing to do as this was clearly a conversation not meant for her ears. However, Astoria couldn’t bring herself to walk away. She peaked around the statue.
You came down the hallway with long strides and Draco followed you. Both of your faces were flushed with anger.
“What do you want from me?”, you asked him and even Astoria shivered from the coldness in your voice.
“What I want from you?”, Draco sneered. “I want you to stop lying!”
Oh-oh. Astoria watched as you whirled around to face the Slytherin. “When will you get this into your head, Malfoy? I’m not lying to you!” Every word was accompanied by a tap of your finger against his chest. Draco caught your hand by your wrist and held it still. You let out a sharp hiss.
“Merlin, when will you ever stop this charade?” He shook his head in disbelief and his voice was as cold as ice when he continued. Astoria felt awfully reminded of a younger Draco. “All you ever do is lie! You lie to your parents, your friends, everyone who you say means something receives nothing from you except lies and deceptions. It seems to be the only thing you’re truly good at, the only thing that –”
“Shut up!”, your voice was shrill and you tried to pull away from Draco but he held tightly on to your wrist.
The scene unfolding in front of Astoria engulfed her and so she didn’t notice how loosely she was holding on to her wand – until it hit the ground beneath her feet, the wood clanking against the stones. Draco’s eyes shot in her direction at the sudden noise. Astoria gasped and hid behind the statue again. She put a hand over her mouth, her heart beating even faster now. Had he seen her? She fully expected him to be coming her way but no footsteps could be heard. Astoria remained in her position for a few more moments before slowly bending down to pick up her wand. She let it slip into the pocket of her cloak before she peaked around the corner again.
Draco’s gaze was fully fixated on you again. He had come closer and Astoria saw how his mouth moved. She made out faint whispers, yet both of them had lowered their voices enough for her to be unable to understand the words spoken. She watched the two of you with furrowed brows and then her eyes widened at what happened next:
Draco let go of your hand and pushed you up against the stone wall in one swift movement. You didn’t resist. Instead you hissed something at him before looking to your side. Draco grabbed your chin and forced you to look at him, leaning in even closer.
Astoria’s mouth felt dry all of the sudden and the realization of what he was going to do next dawned on her. A strange sensation settled in her stomach and the feeling of watching something she had no right to see became overwhelming. She watched your hips move forward slightly and wondered if it was intentional or just a natural reaction to his touch. You whispered something – was it a curse? A confession? Or just another lie to protect yourself from the damage you had done?
The sensation in her stomach grew stronger. Astoria began to feel sick – and then it happened. You tilted your head and leaned in. When your lips touched, Astoria finally turned her gaze away.
Hi scully, there’s a bit of a small debate about Daphne on the server, we’ll not a debate mitre people having different pov’s on how her character is coming off. Could you do one of your lovely character analysis of Daphne to help us get a better read on her?
Ahh thank you for this chance! I have seen the discussion in the server and I do have thoughts. Putting a disclaimer in place that of course people take what they interpret from the story and no interpretation is right or wrong -- even mine!
OK so DAPHNE! I think a lot of what she's about as a character comes from growing up as the healthy older sibling of a very ill child. My understanding of this situation is that a lot of the resources naturally go to the sick child, which can leave the healthy one(s) kind of blowing in the wind. But let's let Theo in Bending Light chapter 24 explain it to us:
"Daphne and I grew up together. Our families' estates are near each other and our mothers were close as girls. She was my only friend. Through some very rough times. And I was hers. Neither of us have very good fathers. So we were together constantly. Outside as much as we could be—almost feral, to be honest—what with my mum dead and Daphne's consumed by Daph's younger sister."
And then after Hermione asks who Daphne's younger sister is and what her illness is Theo says:
"Nobody seems to know. Although there were many years where the family's whole purpose seemed to be to find out. Made poor Daph a bit of an afterthought."
So that tells you a lot of what you need to know. Daphne grew up almost neglected -- running wild with Theo (they once ran away for four days and no one even noticed) until she was 11 and shipped off to boarding school for nine months of the year. And her family (despite Lucius Malfoy's snobby dismissal of them) are upper-crust English purebloods -- not the most emotionally open or supportive. And my sense is that any emotion they do have has been expended on Astoria and an almost obsessive search for a cure to her condition.
There is also a great deal of secrecy and keeping up appearances around Astoria's illness. I believe it's canon that it's a family shame to have a blood curse, (could be wrong, could be fanon, not going to look it up - lol) and so everything around it is hushed up. Daphne knows that towing the line means barely ever speaking about it and constantly downplaying it, which is why she doesn't say a lot about it. Also, she doesn't know much about it because her family keeps her in the dark. A lot because of the shame thing, some because of her being gone at school most of the time and some because she's a bit of a black sheep.
I've gone to some pains in FD to show that Astoria is like her mother, elegant, petite, well-dressed, quiet and with traditional pureblood manners (even if her interior life is quite different!), but Daphne is very much not. She grew up wild with Theo! She wears muggle clothes and listens to muggle music. She annoys Pansy with her muggle t-shirt collection! She fought with her mother over her NYE dress. She's kind of dry and level-headed. Wants to do a Potions apprenticeship after school rather than marry a proper pureblood boy and settle down. A bit of a rebel, which I think puts her a little on the outs with her very traditional family.
To me, Daphne is a what you see is what you get type of character. She's not trying to hide who she is or what she wants (very much unlike her sister). She's direct and bold, but also a little naive. And she's been hurt badly by the person she loved the most (and Michael), so she's also cautious and pretty vulnerable. I don't see her having a lot of ulterior motives for things or being a tricky person. When she says something, she means what she says. I think all of this is what Theo loves about her so much too. And Pansy -- who loves her as a friend. She inspires deep love in others.
So yeah. Daphne is someone I'd like to be friends with, I think. We could jam out to Nirvana and do chemistry experiments together. And I'd definitely want to borrow her clothes. 😆 Thanks for reading this far if you've made it! xoxo ~SM
you felt many emotions as you entered the hogwarts grounds, the school year starting and summer coming to an end. you felt happy and excited due to the fact that you would finally be able to see your boyfriend, draco, after what seemed like forever.
your parents decided to bring you on a trip to europe this summer, giving you no time to spend with him.
spotting him from afar, you ran up behind him, bringing your hands to his eyes. "guess who?" you sang song, smiling to yourself. "hmm, crabbe?" your hands left his face as he turned around, greeting you with the smile that could make you melt within seconds.
he cupped your face, lips softly attaching to yours. you could stay like this forever, however he pulled away before turning sideways towards a brunette girl who stood by his side.
"y/n, this is astoria greengrass, daphne's sister. we spent a lot of time with each other this summer since our parents decided to do business together."
you grew confused, draco didn't mention her or their parents' business deal in his letters to you. nonetheless, you brought your hand forward to the greet brunette.
"it's so nice to meet you, daphne talks about you a lot."
her hand met with yours, shaking it politely. "I'm sure they aren't good things then," she joked, causing draco to chuckle as you laughed.
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*  *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
a few weeks later into the school year, you were sitting at a table in the library waiting for draco as you had planned to meet up with each other after dinner.
he was supposed to be here ten minutes ago. those ten minutes turned into fifteen, and those fifteen slowly turned into thirty.  you weren't mad at him, it's just very unlikely for draco to be late.
you decided to wait a few more minutes for him, your eyes feeling droopy as you stared at the clock ahead of you.
you were startled as you were suddenly shaken awake by madam pince, informing you that the library had just closed. after apologizing endlessly, you sluggishly walked back to the common room.
you were confused as to why draco failed to show up, however you convinced yourself that he accidentally fell asleep after having an exhausting day. entering the common room, the laughter of a boy and girl filled your ears, and you immediately recognized the boy's.
as you walked further in, you saw draco and astoria laughing together on the couch in front of the fireplace, papers scattered everywhere. he didn't notice you at first, but when he did, his smile fell upon seeing your weary state, suddenly reminded of your plans.
"merlin, I'm sorry. I've been helping astoria study for her potions test tomorrow and I guess I lost track of time," he hurriedly rushed over to you.
you weren't going to lie, you were hurt. maybe even jealous? the fact that draco had kept you waiting long enough for you to fall asleep until curfew due to astoria made you the littlest bit of sad, however you pushed the feeling away.
"it's okay, I understand. I'm feeling tired, I'm gonna head up and get ready for bed," you gave him a small smile, waving to astoria as you turned to the direction of your dorm. "do you want me to come with you?" draco offered as he reached out for your arm.
you sighed as you glanced around at the messy area in front of you. "no it's fine, I'll just see you tomorrow," you mumbled the last bit as draco planted a kiss onto your forehead, a frown appearing on your face. "and astoria? if draco's helping you study, you're definitely going to ace that test," you teased as you finally turned around and headed for your dorm.
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*  *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
you expected this to be a one time thing, but was left disappointed as draco started to spend more time with her and less with you.
a few weeks ago you had to help mcgonagall clean up a mess made by other students after school hours as you were a prefect, causing you to be late to meet with draco after his quidditch practice.
finally arriving to the quidditch pitch, you saw that he was already conversing with astoria. after apologizing for being late, he assured you it was okay because he had "astoria to keep him company." if anything, it only made you feel worse.
and just a few days ago, he didn't meet up with you after class to walk you to lunch, so you headed to the great hall without him, hunger taking over your body. upon entering, you recognized the blonde boy and saw that he had already been seated, diving into his meal.
beside him, in your spot, sat the darn brunette girl. you gulped as you turned around, heading to your next class, not wanting to be around the both of them.
for every instance this happened, you couldn't help but get more frustrated and jealous as you started to see him less.
you lost it one saturday morning when you went to meet up with draco for your weekly hogsmeade trip. you were looking forward to this day as you and draco always spent saturdays hanging out with each other to catch up and relax after a stressful week.
your smile dropped when you saw astoria by his side in the common room. when you were told that draco had invited her to hang out with the two of you, you hadn’t said anything and dragged draco to your dorm.
“what’s wrong darling?” he inquired, worried about you as you stood with your arms crossed.
“I’ve barely seen you recently because you’re always hanging out with her, and the one time I finally get to see you, she’s there!” you didn’t mean to raise your voice, however your anger has been pent up for way too long.
“you’re over exaggerating,” draco stated, causing you to scoff.
“It just makes me sad sometimes, I’m starting to think you enjoy her company more than mine,” your voice broke and so did your heart as you thought about it, hoping it wasn’t true.
“you know, maybe I do enjoy her company more than yours. at least she’s not as annoying or dramatic as you.” you felt your heart drop upon hearing his words, tears threatening to fall out.
you opened your mouth to retaliate when you closed it, not wanting to dig an even deeper hole. “y-you’re right, I’m sorry.” your words contradicted your thoughts as you knew he was not at all right. you turned around, starting to play with the items displayed on top of your desk in attempt to distract yourself.
you took a few breaths to calm yourself. “you should go back down, I think I’m gonna stay behind, I just remembered I have a project to complete,” you came up with an excuse as the tears finally fell, wetting the parchment below you.
you waited for him to bid you goodbye, but instead you were met with the slamming of the door behind you.
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*  *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
you had managed to avoid draco for some time now, not being the confrontational type and unsure of what to do if you had talked to him. you were sure that he didn't mean what he said, yet again, life was always full of surprises.
for example, one night, he had surprised you as you entered your dorm to see him seated on your bed, waiting for your arrival.
"we need to talk," draco stood up as you avoided eye contact with him, not as comfortable being in his presence after what he had said about you.
"okay then, talk." you crossed your arms, still not prepared for the conversation waiting to unfold.
"I didn't mean what I said," so you were right. "I just had stress building up that whole week, and when you came at me I kind of freaked out."
you sighed, "that doesn't give you permission to take it out on me." your voice was so small and soft that it made draco feel even guiltier.
draco gulped, "I know it doesn't, and I'm sorry. it wasn't fair to you, and I should've just listened to you in the first place. I love you, y/n, and I wouldn't want to do anything that would jeopardize our relationship."
"I think we may have to work on that last bit," you jokingly tapped your chin in attempt to ease the tension as draco let out a small chuckle. moments of silence passed by as you stared down at the ground, gathering your thoughts as draco waited patiently for you to say what was on your mind.
"I forgive you, but..." draco's expression suddenly dropped as you let out a shaky breath. "I need you to give me some time, what you said really hurt me."
draco nodded, telling you he understood. "and I want you to take time to listen me next time and see things from my perspective. you can be friends with astoria but I think you need to set some boundaries." you started to bite down on your thumbnail, scared that you were asking for too much from him.
"of course, I already talked with her and we can take things as slow as you want," draco held open his arms as you slowly embraced and thanked him.
he pressed a loving kiss onto your forehead as the two of you continued to hold one another. pulling away, small smiles were worn on both of your faces, knowing that you guys would get through this little bump in the road.
Hide and Seek
#5 “Yes I’m bitter, it’s part of my charm.”
Draco x Reader
Another one for @nebulablakemurphy ‘s 500 celebration!!
This was going to be longer but I don’t have access to my laptop for the next two weeks and wanted to post this 😅
“Draco please,” you begged for the millionth time that day, “you know Pansy won’t go to Hogsmeade when it’s snowing, and I don’t want to go alone.”
“Hogsmeade is for kids Y/N,” the boy sitting next to you on the dining bench rolled his eyes and continued eating his breakfast and ignoring you.
“We are kids you prat,” you elbowed him in the ribs ever so lightly.
You’d been friends with Draco Malfoy for as long as you could remember. Your families had always been close, as pureblood circles usually are. Together you had played hours of hide and seek in the manor gardens before Hogwarts. When it was finally time for the two of you to head to school, you had nervously clung onto Draco’s hand for the entire sorting ceremony, all the way until they called your name.
It was lucky you’d been sorted into Slytherin, most of the people you knew were sorted there and Draco was no different. He wasn’t your best friend, but he was your oldest friend. This was exactly the reason why you could never in a million years tell him outright that you were hopelessly in love with him.
“Fine, if you stop whining I’ll take you,” the blond boy muttered without looking up from the book he had folded open on the table.
“I knew you’d come around,” You grinned and returned to your breakfast.
“You’re lucky I love you,” he teased and lightly kicked your foot under the table with a smirk, never taking his eyes off the pages in front of him. You nearly choked on your toast but managed to hide it with a cough.
It wasn’t uncommon for you to be affectionate towards each other. A hug, an arm around your shoulders, one of you messing with the other’s hair, it still caught you by surprise every time.
Like now, Draco had one arm slung over your shoulders as the two of you walked through light snow to get to Hogsmeade. Even through layers of sweaters and gloves, you swore you could feel the heat radiating off his arm. With the tiny snowflakes sticking to your hair and robes, it was comforting.
“You should really come stay at the mansion for a few days over Christmas break,” Draco squeezed your shoulder with a small smile, “Mum hasn’t stopped talking about you since…well since forever now that I think about it,” he let out a short laugh.
“We’re already coming down for the yearly ball Draco, I can’t just live at your house,” You laughed and shook your head. Narcissa doted on you like you were her own child and Draco never stopped making fun of you for it. He always swore she loved you more than him.
“Yeah but I never get enough of you,” he smirked as your cheeks darkened to a terrible red. At least you could blame it on the chill, usually it was painfully obvious. Sometimes you forgot how flirty your friend could be, and how much it actually affected you.
“I’m sure if you beg hard enough I can find some time,” you bit the inside of your cheek to keep from grinning like a fool every time Draco cast a glance at you.
“Speaking of begging,” he stopped walking, people milling about you, making their way into the small town a few streets down. “I know you really don’t want to and you hate doing me favours but would you be my date for the ball this year?”
The Malfoy Christmas ball, an annual tradition beloved by all Pureblood families. It was a chance for everyone to get together, catch up and let loose a little. You loved those parties, it was a chance to see all of your childhood friends and dressing up was always a guilty pleasure. As a kid, you’d mostly spent the night running through the manor or stuck to your mother skirts. No one expected you to really behave as a kid but after the age of sixteen, everyone’s parents pressured them to bring a date and act ‘adult’. It was just how it had always been done, and even though you were aware how old and stiff Pureblood traditions really were, you couldn’t exactly say no.
Normally Draco was quick to get a date, he was handsome and smart, and no intelligent Pureblood would turn down a Malfoy. You however, were a little less enthusiastic about the prospect of dragging a random boy along with you all night. Nevertheless, you did (ditching them as soon as your parents had a glass of wine in them).
“Dray you know I would but…I’ve already said I’d go with Theo.” Your mouth tilted into an apologetic smile as you shrugged. Your heart was pounding in your chest, the one-time Draco asked you to go, even just as friends, and you already had a date…Fuck.
“You’re taking Nott? Seriously?” Draco scoffed, giving you a look of disgust.
“What’s wrong with Theo? He’s a nice guy!” You crossed your arms defensively. Draco was never a fan of your dates, he was just protective over you, but it still got on your nerves.
“Yeah he’s nice to you because he wants to get under your skirt,” he sneered and rolled his eyes.
“Oh my god, you’re so bitter!” You said, throwing your hands up in frustration.
“Yes, I’m bitter, it’s part of my charm,” he sighed accepting defeat, “come on.” He grabbed your hand and steered you into Hogsmeade again hoping to get out of there faster, so he could wallow in self-pity.
“You call it charm, I call it having your head up your ass.” You shake your head but let him drag you along anyway. “Listen if it makes you feel better I’ll help find you a date alright? I already know who’s going with who, the girls won’t shut up about it.” You chuckled to yourself at the thought of your dormmates and their late-night gossip sessions.
“Alright fine, but you better not stick me with Bulstrode,” Draco’s tone was snippy, but you knew he wasn’t really annoyed. He only wants to go with you as a favour, not a real date, you couldn’t help but think.
Finding Draco a date was easy. You had barely mentioned it to your dormmates in passing before Daphne had practically pushed her younger sister forward like a sacrificial lamb. Astoria was a shy girl, only a year younger than you. It was her first year taking a date and the poor girl had been wrecked with nerves, so Daphne had been on the lookout in her stead.
The worst part was, Astoria was gorgeous. She was this petite girl with gorgeous long dark hair and the clearest skin you’d ever seen on a teenager. It was awful. Not that you were jealous of course, you just knew she was more Draco’s type than you would ever be.
But with your mum’s help you had been primped into the elegant daughter of a Pureblood family. It really was a once a year occasion. Your dress robes were fitted perfectly to your size and your hair had been curled perfectly by expertly performed magic. Not yours of course, your mum’s.
With a soft pop your family apparated to the front gates of Malfoy Manor. Theo was waiting for you there and gave you a big grin and a wave when he saw you appear. You waved back and met him halfway to the large iron gates barring entrance to the mansion itself. You parents left you with your date and continued up the walkway.
“Hey Y/N,” Theo smiled and roped you in for a hug, “you look really nice!”
“Thanks, you too,” You picked at your dress robes and tucked a bit of hair back into place. Theo was in most of your classes and you were always happy to buddy up with him for projects. He wasn’t exactly the smartest, but you had a lot of fun together and you didn’t mind doing most of the work anyway.
Theo was dressed elegantly in basic black dress robes, he was never one for extravagance and you kind of respected that about him. Taking his arm you made your way through the manor, knowing exactly where to find the huge ballroom it housed. Draco often complained about the house because it felt so gloomy and empty sometimes with only the three of them living there. However, with music pouring through the halls and people laughing and talking over each other it felt very much alive and warm.
The pair of you were careful to avoid the dance floor and make your rounds among old family friends. A friendly chat here, an ‘I haven’t seen you since you were this small’ there and introducing your date to family members. It was a formal start to the night but it was always better to get it over with before the adults had too many glasses of fire whiskey in them.
Draco hadn’t been able to keep his eyes off you since the moment you stepped foot in the ballroom. You were all smiles and laughter as you walked around talking to Theo. His own date had been trying to get him on the dancefloor for the past twenty minutes but Draco refused to let you out of his sight for a whole song.
You looked stunning. To Draco you always did, but sometimes he forgot how much you affected him. He watched Theo whisper something in your ear and you responded by throwing your head back and letting out an obnoxiously loud laugh. Draco thought it was the most amazing sound in the world. Though, he was less pleased by the thought of someone else making you laugh like that.
“Do you think someone put a hex on him when he was younger, so he’d permanently look constipated?” Theo whispered in your ear as the both of you watched Professor Snape sneer at the people on the dance floor.
You couldn’t hold back your laughter as you watched your teacher grimace when someone tried to speak to him. You knew he was close with the Malfoys, but you always wondered why he actually showed up to these things. It was however a great source of entertainment for the evening.
“Nott good to see you,” The blond appeared out of thin air in front of you.
Subconsciously you held your breath as you cast a lingering look over his appearance. Black robes with a dark green lining, hair perfectly gelled back showing off his aristocratic bone structure. You swore you were melting into a puddle in front of his eyes.
“Cat got your tongue Y/L/N?” You hadn’t even noticed him speaking to you. You drew your eyes back up to his and a mischievous smirk rested on his lips as he repeated, “Dance with me.”
“That’s not a question,” you jab Draco’s side but take his outstretched hand anyway. “see you in a bit Theo?” You smiled at him as he nodded and shooed you away with a wink.
“You know I like you in green but if you were going to match me you should’ve just come as my date,” Draco smirked and pulled you closer to him. His hand slid easily to your waist as you rested yours on his shoulder.
“Oh, shut up,” you rolled your eyes with a smile on your face, “you don’t own the colour green.”
“I’m glad I don’t because you’ll always look more stunning in it than I ever could,” he leaned in to murmur in your ear, his hand squeezing your hip ever so lightly. If he hadn’t been holding you, you were convinced your legs would have simply given out under you.
“You’re not so bad yourself,” you responded shakily. His slate grey eyes bored into yours and he almost looked like he was searching for the answer to an unspoken question.
“Draco!” a female voice called from a few meters away and the boy in question closed his eyes and groaned.
“If we run now, do you think she’d find me?” he whispered dramatically. The girl stalking towards them was in fact his date.
“Wanna find out?” You whispered back with a cheeky grin and grabbed his hand before pulling him towards the large double doors of the ballroom.
The two of you ran through the hallways of the manor side by side, robes whipping about you and footsteps echoing behind you. The two of you were laughing your heads off by the time you had escaped the house into the gorgeous gardens. Together you ventured farther into the garden, a light frost covering the grass and plants surrounding you.
“Draco?” This time the woman calling out your companion’s name was unmistakeably Narcissa Malfoy. She did not sound pleased at her son’s antics at all.
Draco’s hand found yours again and he pulled you along with him behind a nearby tree. You opened your mouth to complain before he covered it with his hand and shook his head. You could hear Narcissa retreating back into the house, but Draco didn’t move. Instead his fingers lightly touched your cheek, his thumb brushing over your cheekbone.
He was so close you could smell his cologne, it was earthy and warm, and you were back to being in danger of melting. You were nearly chest to chest and his body caged you in against the tree. You felt your breath hitch as his eyes left yours to look at your lips. His cheeks had a light pink flush to them as he swallowed and licked his lips.
“We should really go back.” He said softly without conviction. “I’m sure Theo will be wondering where his date ran off to.” He teased with a quiet laugh.
“Draco?” you said softly and he hummed in response, “shut up.” You breathed and pulled him in by the collar of his dress shirt.
You kissed him with everything you had. It wasn’t slow or tender, it was fiery and passionate just like the both of you. You kissed him for the first time like it could be the last. He kissed back with everything he’d been holding in for years.
He melted into your touch and pressed you against the tree trunk with his body. The bark dug into your back but you could only pay attention to how soft his lips were and how he was a really good kisser. His hands roamed from your waist to your rib cage to your hair as he feverishly kissed you.
He reluctantly pulled back for air and searched your face in the moonlight. The cold air doing nothing to cool down the heat in your cheeks. Draco’s eyes were wide and for the first time in your life he looked unsure of himself. You looked at him in that moment with all the love in the world and couldn’t help but smile. His face was just as flushed as yours and his perfect hair fell into his eyes from you running your fingers through it.
He leaned in to kiss you again but this time softly, so gentle as if he was afraid your break under his touch. As if he wasn’t sure you were real at all. He kissed your nose, peppered little kisses along your jaw and kissed every inch of your face. He leaned his forehead against yours, noses bumping gently.
“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that,” he sighed, eyes closed. You could hear the smile in his voice and your heart fluttered.
“I can guess,” you giggled lightly and gave him a quick peck on the lips.
“I am so incredibly in love with you,” his voice was barely above a whisper and held all of the emotion you couldn’t see on his face.
“I love you Draco, I always have,” you smiled brilliantly and kissed him again, never wanting to leave the hidden spot you had found for yourselves.
“Time to face my mum now I suppose?” He grimaced and buried his face in your neck with a sigh.
“Together,” you chuckled and grabbed his hand, placing a light kiss on his golden hair, “at least you already know your mother loves me.”
i have decided to share some more of my headcanons about the golden era slytherins, so… here it goes! headcanons part two
(also these are mostly when they’re adults)
daphne is knows a LOT about sciencey things, and makes those informational things that have matching worksheets (if you know what i mean?) for muggle classes online
astoria is demi everything. demiromantic demisexual demigirl. (pronouns she/they) she could love any gender.
blaise really likes to embarrass draco by loudly calling him pet names in public, and draco absolutely hates it. (“well you didn’t mind me calling you super-mega-foxy-awesome-hot in bed last night,” “BLAISE!”) also they’re literally asexual. like they did not have sex. by “in bed last night” blaise meant when they were cuddling, draco was reading, and blaise was kissing draco’s temples and rubbing his back.
pansy owns a bookshop in diagon alley, and a lot of the time theo comes and helps her out. sometimes scorpius does, too.
draco and tori bake together a lot
pansy always calls luna “my favourite manic pixie dream girl” (disclaimer: i don’t ship them. sorry.)
after tori and ginny became friends, the other slytherin just started, like, flocking to her?? and ginny’s like “well i guess these are my friends now. ha, ron’s gonna be pissed.”
draco has fancy loopy cursive handwriting
the first time theo saw daphne’s handwriting he genuinely thought she wasn’t writing in english
draco plays piano, violin, and saxophone.
pansy plays the drums and electric guitar
theo can play (play? blow? idk. knows how to work) the trumpet
draco wears contacts, and absolutely refuses to ever wear glasses. one time in fifth year he lost his contacts for a week. he had to write schoolwork with his face two centimetres from his parchment and get someone to read the textbooks to him, but hey, at least he didn’t need his to wear his glasses.
contrary to popular belief, draco hates coffee. he doesn’t, however, hate being taken seriously, so he puts dr pepper in mugs. he doesn’t tell people it’s coffee, but he doesn’t not tell people it’s coffee.
theo finds the boat scene from willy wonka and the chocolate factory terrifying.
pansy’s eyes are dark green. like, very dark. veeeeeeery dark.
and that’s all for now. sorry there aren’t that many, i’ll post some more later. :)
Welcome back! You made me worried for this wait, you know? But now that a new chapter of the saga is here, time to go crazy and pesting you with my thoughts.
Ok, first of all, it's so good seeing Sirius and Remus again! Last time Ron saw them was in... way less pleasable moments, but I'm hapoy they are back in the story, and I hope they will spend more time around Ronal too. (Expecially Sirius. I always thought there was a more, let's say, deep connection between those two than the original author let us see, with Ron being basically Harry's James. But Remus has always been a favourite of mine so if he grow closer to Ron too, I won't complain at all.)
Finally, Ron remembered to ask Charlie about his wand! For a moment I thought that he forgot abou it! (I gotta be honest, in the last chapters I noticed that you tended to jump between moments a lot, and while I like it and give more mistery on what is happening, an excess of it is really confusing. I hope next chapters will have less time jumping or my head will explode xD) And good thing that he's starting to investigate about the Deluminator too! How does it work? What are its limitation? How much is similar to Dumbledoor's one, and why Death gave him specifically it as an Hallow? Soooo many questions... I hope Ronald's habit to ask the right question will come back.
Shame Charlie and Bill haven't heard of the troll incident (yet), but I'm sure the dragon incident will give those two enough stress, so I'll just wait to see their reaction to the new adventure of their little, problematic child!
Finally Hermione is making friends, and even outside Gryffindor too! Sue is such a sweety pie, she's so darn cute, and even the new professor, Imothep, looks like a great guy! (Why can't the lecturers teach the subjects on full time??? That's bloody unfair), I wonder if you intend to use him when in the third year the Weasley's will go to Egypth, sure, if you'll still keep that plotpoint...
Also, F*CK YEAH, DAPHNE TIME. Still an ice queen, but at least she was nice with Neville, and her interaction with Ron show how much she has a burning fire inside that aphatetic facade, it's just a matter of time before that crumbles too (I can't help it, I love the "rich blonde girl befriend normal kid and she becomes more rowdy and passionate" trope). Also, I wonder why she is so obsessed with potions... hm... wonder if that has something to do with Astoria's situation...
Or maybe she's just really, really into potions. Probably the latter.
And lastly, the Quidditch game. Not only he was really cunning and convinced the ferret to do a bet that was already won, but he even used that little 'pureblood speech' on boot! (It's my headcanon that the way he refered to the others he copied from Daphne and Neville's interaction, know it.) But... so now Malfoy won't bother them for the whole year? Isn't that... like a big change? I mean this time they won't have him on their neck while sneaking Norberta out the castle, but in so Harry won't go in the Forbidden Forest, won't have the first head on with Tom, and he won't even meet Firenze! I mean in the big scheme of things it's not really much, but.. I don't know, it feels like a big deal...
...oh wait this is if the ferret honors his word. My bad I made a mistake.
In the end, great chapter. Reading your works is always one of the highlights of my day, and for the timezones, it's always the first thing I read in the morning. I'll wait the next chapter with trepidation! (Possibly we won't have to wait three months this time xD)
Keep it going, and at the next time! Ah, and stay safe too!
Hey there! I’m happy to be back! :) Even though I tend to disappear for a long while before coming back again. Hahaha!
* Ok, first of all, it's so good seeing Sirius and Remus again! Last time Ron saw them was in... way less pleasable moments, but I'm hapoy they are back in the story, and I hope they will spend more time around Ronal too. (Expecially Sirius. I always thought there was a more, let's say, deep connection between those two than the original author let us see, with Ron being basically Harry's James. But Remus has always been a favourite of mine so if he grow closer to Ron too, I won't complain at all.)*
It was only when you mentioned that Ron is essentially Harry’s James that I realized their similarities, especially regarding how they gave Harry and Sirius their second homes and were loyal friends to the end. You just gave me an idea!  Thanks for this comment! And it would be nice if Ron will become closer to Sirius and Remus, just like in Fate. But how that will come about, we’ll just have to see.
*Finally, Ron remembered to ask Charlie about his wand! For a moment I thought that he forgot abou it! (I gotta be honest, in the last chapters I noticed that you tended to jump between moments a lot, and while I like it and give more mistery on what is happening, an excess of it is really confusing. I hope next chapters will have less time jumping or my head will explode xD)*
Apologies for the confusion. It’s my way of keeping readers on their toes, since they won’t know when the next plot point will be resolved. And there will be a good number of those between chapters and even between books, because just like in the real world, life is messy, unpredictable and complicated. That’s why prioritizing is important.
But even then, that’s not a guarantee things will go smoothly. If you’re confused reading about it, can you imagine how it is for Ron who has to live through my writing? XD
* Shame Charlie and Bill haven't heard of the troll incident (yet), but I'm sure the dragon incident will give those two enough stress, so I'll just wait to see their reaction to the new adventure of their little, problematic child!*
Oh they will hear about it, but probably not when you think they will. And as for the dragon incident, well, it’s in the next chapter. Now how will I reconcile the fact that Charlie’s reaction was pretty (unrealisitcally IMO) chill in the books with the fact that he’s a protective hellion over Ronnie in TBA? Hmm...
* Finally Hermione is making friends, and even outside Gryffindor too! Sue is such a sweety pie, she's so darn cute, and even the new professor, Imothep, looks like a great guy! (Why can't the lecturers teach the subjects on full time??? That's bloody unfair), I wonder if you intend to use him when in the third year the Weasley's will go to Egypth, sure, if you'll still keep that plotpoint...*
It’s a shame that canon Hermione didn’t grow out of her shell enough to make real friends outside of the Golden Trio’s comfort zone. Actually, that goes for all three of them. But at least she’s got Sue and Penny, and her Arithmancy homework. Yay!
Will Imhotep be in Egypt come POA year? Will there even be an Egypt arc? So many things to think about.
At least we know the Basilisk is still a thing, eh? :D
*Also, F*CK YEAH, DAPHNE TIME. Still an ice queen, but at least she was nice with Neville, and her interaction with Ron show how much she has a burning fire inside that aphatetic facade, it's just a matter of time before that crumbles too (I can't help it, I love the "rich blonde girl befriend normal kid and she becomes more rowdy and passionate" trope). Also, I wonder why she is so obsessed with potions... hm... wonder if that has something to do with Astoria's situation...Or maybe she's just really, really into potions. Probably the latter.*
Daphne is usually fitted into either the Ice Queen or the Spoiled Princess trope (even a combination of both). As for her love for Potions, I’ll say that she as an aptitude for it and leave it at that for now.
And as for the Astoria situation, do I ever have plans for her too. :)
*And lastly, the Quidditch game. Not only he was really cunning and convinced the ferret to do a bet that was already won, but he even used that little 'pureblood speech' on boot! (It's my headcanon that the way he refered to the others he copied from Daphne and Neville's interaction, know it.)*
Since the whole Noble House business has been bothering him so much even after the trial, Ron just went, why the heck not?
Now if that is something that will bite Ron in the arse later on, who knows?
*But... so now Malfoy won't bother them for the whole year? Isn't that... like a big change? I mean this time they won't have him on their neck while sneaking Norberta out the castle, but in so Harry won't go in the Forbidden Forest, won't have the first head on with Tom, and he won't even meet Firenze! I mean in the big scheme of things it's not really much, but.. I don't know, it feels like a big deal......oh wait this is if the ferret honors his word. My bad I made a mistake.*
Oh, I don’t know. Just because Malfoy wouldn’t be bullying or harassing them directly doesn’t mean that he’ll really leave them alone. Malfoy was put under Slytherin for a reason, and I think it’s just right he proved in TBA exactly why.
*In the end, great chapter. Reading your works is always one of the highlights of my day, and for the timezones, it's always the first thing I read in the morning. I'll wait the next chapter with trepidation! (Possibly we won't have to wait three months this time xD)Keep it going, and at the next time! Ah, and stay safe too!*
Aww thank you so much! I also love reading your asks, replies and your fanart! All this is so very sweet of you! Stay safe and see you in the next chapter of TBA!
Snakes and Sunflowers Character Analysis
Ok so I got a comment and I’ll post that for context and my full response, in which I talk about my thoughts on specific characters. Send in an ask if you want me to talk about any other characters, or another character I mention a bit in here more in depth. It’s a bit rambly, I apologize for that lol
Comment from @ mariammk on AO3
I just binge-read this.
Your characterisation and plot are so realistic! Some stories I've read that involve Weasley-bashing (specifically Ron) are a bit careless in their explanation, but yours is believable. I really hope Harry gets his head out of his ass soon, and I do hope Sirius plays a part in that, but I also appreciate how you've made Ron's influence on Harry - because I truly get that a boy who has been orphaned and grew up in a less-than loving home would cling on to the first friend he had and believe every word that comes from his mouth.
Dumbledore is driving me insane, but I can't wait for you to poke holes in to his 'holier-than-thou' persona!
Side note: I'm really scared for when Voldemort resurfaces, but I'm hoping Harry doesn't follow Dumbledore blindly.
Also, I'm so happy to see Sirius there!!! I hope Remus comes back too and that he gets the opportunity to start his life again, and please get Andromeda reinstated in the family again! I want her to reunite with Narcissa <3
Can not wait for the next update! :)
My response-
Awwww! Thank you so so so much! Reviews like this absolutely make my day, you have no idea. I can't promise Harry will get any better any time soon (ah! I'm sorry! But it's necessary to the plot, for now), and Sirius will play a part in it. I definitely can understand what Harry feels-personally, when I was a child, I had a tendency to latch onto the first person who gave me attention, and I would give them my unwavering loyalty, for better or for worse, because I was worried of being abandoned if I did or said anything wrong and the feeling I couldn't leave them because there wouldn't be anyone else who would want to be my friend. For me, this stemmed form an (at the time) undiagnosed and untreated anxiety disorder. Obviously, this is nowhere near as bad as Harry's situation, but I'm using this to try and apply this to Harry and his character and to understand him and where he comes from.
A lot of these characters I've based in part off myself or people that I know, especially with the characters that are less explored in canon (which is basically all of Slytherin.) One of J.K. Rowling's many faults, in my opinion, is how one-note she makes her characters. She focuses on one aspect and drives it into the ground and typically doesn't explore the why behind any of it. The character that I play around with the most is obviously Hermione, being that she's my main character. Her character in the book is very similar to how I was in my pre and early teenage years--stemming from the lack of a large and supportive friend group (for Hermione until Hogwarts began), and she has an innate desire to prove herself because of it. She is an outsider, both socially and societally. She's going to try and prove herself, but she doesn't exactly know how to navigate the waters. Hermione in this story grew up with a very strong support system and lots of friends who love her very much. She knows how to navigate the waters and knows that she has a place in the world, because she's always had a place in the world. There's a bit of a self-assuredness born from that. She's still a know-it-all, she's still passionate and smart, but she isn't desperate to prove herself. If we're comparing her to me again, this is quite a bit like how I was in high school, once I had gotten a really good support system and had started getting treated for my anxiety, thus making me less desperate to please everyone around me at no matter the cost, as well as making me more confident and self-assured.
With the other characters, with as one-note as the main characters can be, there's even less for the others. Even Draco Malfoy, a main antagonist of the series, all that we really get is that he can be a bit of a snob and sometimes a little mean. However, this is portrayed from the view of Harry, someone who doesn't understand pureblood society, and doesn't care to look deeper than what he sees. For Ginny, all we know is that she's athletic, outgoing and driven. We don't get much else. So for these two characters, even though they're prominent in the books, there's so much to build on and explore. And with little changes to how they were raised-like with Draco growing up in a more tolerant household in my fanfiction than what he probably did in canon, with lots of friends, that changes pieces of their characters. The remorse of Lucius leads to Draco not idolizing the views of Death Eaters and the like. So does the Malfoy's closeness with the Greengrasses, a Neutral family.
With characters like Theo, Daphne, Astoria, Hannah, Pansy, Blaise (and on and on), we've got absolutely nothing. Those characters are really fun to play around with because there is no such thing as being out of character for them. I can make their characters whatever I like. Narcissa is a bit like one of my senior friends when I was a freshman in high school, and Daphne reminds me a bit of a friend I had in the second grade who moved to Texas. Astoria is some parts of how my little sister (when she was little) and Pansy has some of the more harder aspects of my little sister at a bit of an older age.
I just love character driven things and inspecting a character from all sides and then seeing how they interact with other things and other people, and I'm glad that you enjoy the characterizations. I hope I didn't bore you half to death with my long ramble character-study sort of thing lol but it's something I could obviously write a lot about (I mean I'm writing a whole fanfiction about it so I'd hope I'd be interested in it).
Again, if you want to ask anything at all, throw it in my asks and I’ll get to it! I truly love talking about my characters and my stories and I’d be thrilled if you guys want to listen to my rambles about them lol
They were both too young to know how to love.
Of course leave it to Harry Potter to be what drags me back into writing fan fiction. Apologies to people who follow me already since this is pretty different from posts I’ve done in the past, so feel free to ignore.
I just wanted to try and get some thoughts out about a fanfiction I’m currently writing, specifically the relationship between Harry and Daphne. Or the lack of one right now anyway. ;)
The basic background is that this is a soulmate AU with soulmate marks and empathy/semi-telepathy (I’m not sure what to call it honestly). The three main ships are Dramione, Ransy, and Pottgrass, and it’s a slowburn enemies to lovers starting from Goblet of Fire on. Emphasis on slowburn and enemies considering two of the involved are Draco and Pansy.
Before I started writing again, the only ones of those three I shippped/read fanfiction of were Draco/Hermione and Pansy/Ron. I originally picked Daphne because I’d read fics that had her as a character and liked her in them; after that I read two fanfics that made me really ship them, because the amount of ships I have due to fanart/fanfic is huge. (Previously I was, and actually still am, a Nottgrass shipper because I am a multi-shipper a lot of the time.)
I’m going to put the rest of my rambling under the cut.
So there are a couple different things going on here. The most superficial was that, when I had started writing, I’d been re-watching the Lizzie Bennet Diaries so I was a bit influenced by Pride and Prejudice when writing Daphne at first. Specifically the inspiration was Matthew Macfaden’s Darcy from the 2005 movie and Daniel Vincent Gordh’s William Darcy from LBD. (And as an aside Astoria was slightly based on Georgianna from the 2005 movie and Gigi Darcy from LBD.)
The inspiration became less strong the more I wrote, but her being standoffish/cold/rude to non-Slytherins (except Astoria) and the scene where Daphne tries to make a deal with Harry was inspired by Darcy's first, horrible proposal to Elizabeth. But that’s the shallower reason, let’s get into the meat of it, which is background vs appearance.
Harry Potter was orphaned at the age of one years old, was raised in an abusive family who didn’t even give him a room for ten years, had no friends until he got to Hogwarts, and was lied to by the Dursleys’ about what his parents were actually like. There were no pictures of his parents, he wasn’t told they were a witch and wizard, and he didn’t even know they were murdered. When he is told about his parents, he is given the romanticized view of James and Lily and their relationship. He thinks they were the perfect picture of soulmates, as he hasn’t been told that James was once a jerk that Lily really disliked. His first real experience of familial love was with the Weasleys and thinks of them as the best family in the world. Daphne knows nothing of this aside from the fact that he was raised by muggles; I don’t think she thought much about Harry at all outside of times parts of his adventures were found out by the school. Like the flying car incident. As she said in the fanfic, Harry just sort of existed to Daphne.
Harry is only fourteen years old at the start of the fic, and has only had a crush on Cho at this point, but he does know that he wants to have the real love and respect his parents had. He wants to have a family of his own that would actually be loving. He doesn’t want his potential future children to grow up without love. And, most importantly, he doesn’t think Daphne is capable of that.
What Harry knows about Daphne’s background is that she’s part of an old, wealthy pureblood family a la the Malfoys or the Parkinsons. (He wouldn’t know the term Sacred Twenty-Eight.) That’s pretty much it and would be about the amount of knowledge all the students from the other houses would know (except for Astoria, the Ravenclaw little sister, who is just as uncomfortable as Daphne when asked to talk about their parents). Harry is also generally dismissive of Slytherin house as a whole thanks to Draco and his gang; he thought they looked like a “pale and unpleasant lot'' at the Welcome Feast in first year.
Here’s how Daphne comes across to the kids outside of Slytherin: standoffish; doesn’t seem to talk much outside of class participation, and is often sarcastic when she does; doesn’t seem to have friends outside of Slytherin and the only non-Slytherin she is consistently genuinely affection towards is her little sister, and not everyone sees that; while not a member of Pansy’s gang is still known to be a good friend of Pansy’s, and is also close to Blaise who is seen as equally snobby.
(Speaking of Blaise, Daphne still wants to know why she’s the only one to get an insulting nickname like Ice Queen when Blaise and Theo are often just as anti-social towards the other houses as she is. In Theo’s case, more so. XD)
Of course, it’s easy to sympathize with Daphne when you know what her background is really like. Her parents, despite being soulmates, have an absolutely toxic relationship that their daughters had to witness: “Daphne Greengrass hadn’t been a fan of the soulmate concept for years now. She could even pinpoint the exact moment her disillusionment started: the night before her sixth birthday when her father finally told her mother that, soulmates or not, he had never loved her and had only married her out of both obligation to the bond and to the alliance with her family. This had then turned into a screaming match in her father’s study accompanied by the sound of glass being thrown at a wall.” This is just one incident.
Daphne was so used to her parents arguing (and to be really clear, I’m not talking about normal arguments couples have; I’m talking about full-blown trying to verbally/emotionally hurt the other as possible or just arguing to try and win against the other person) that she was already making it her job to comfort Astoria, who “was still a baby, and upset by it”. Daphne has grown up with a very dim view of romance and romantic love.
Now, Daphne does know that people can be genuinely in love. For all their many, many faults, Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy are devoted to each other. Pansy’s parents aren’t on the same level, but are loving/affectionate enough with each other. However, she doesn’t think love and happiness are guaranteed so it’s better to have something more solid like respect or trust. However, that is hard to get across to Harry because she’s grown up to think being emotional is bad/a weakness and it’s hard for her to open up to people she doesn’t know well. (Pansy was her first friend at five years old and is still her best friend up until this point; it’s also the reason her other friends are the Slytherins she’s known for years at this point. People she’s used to.)
She could have approached Harry differently, flirted, or suggested dating, or tried to be romantic but she would have thought of that as dishonest/manipulative. Because Daphne knows love isn’t guaranteed for soulmates. Because Daphne knows she’s not the most likeable person. Because Daphne isn’t sure she could love Harry and doesn’t want to lie about it. Yes, Slytherins are all about cunning and clever ways to get what they want, but this is one of the areas Daphne would not even consider something like that. For all her issues, Daphne does have some standards.
Self-control and (just control in general) is something Daphne clings to because her parents were often unpredictable and she had to create a sense of being in control of her life. Her father is not a warm or empathetic person and he looks down on people being too emotional. (Yes, this is supposed to be hypocritical considering he’d get into screaming matches with his wife.) He would be out of the house a lot for both work and to get away from his wife. Her mother was emotionally and mentally in a bad place for a long time and withdrew from her children a bit. She improved by the time Daphne was at school, but her favorite is clearly Astoria for reasons that will be expanded on later. Daphne tells herself she gets it because Astoria is her favorite family member too. (Also I just want to make this clear, Daphne and Astoria are close siblings who genuinely love and care about each other. Daphne is also Astoria’s favorite family member. Their relationship, as I like to see/write it could be another post though so moving on.)
This need for self-control also was because of the stutter she had growing up. She was already self-conscious about it and she was very aware that her parents (her father in particular) saw it as a problem, which stressed her out more and made her stutter worse. The more emotional she’d get, the more likely she’d stutter. Whereas the more comfortable she was, the less often it happened. Pansy already mentioned in one of her POV’s that she barely heard Daphne stutter around her after a while; not a huge spoiler or surprise, but it was the same with Astoria. One of Daphne’s pre-Hogwarts tutors was essentially a wizard speech therapist, so she had it under control by first year but it was still recent enough at the time that she was pretty afraid of slipping up at school. Also consider the fact that some students (not just Slytherins either, but from all houses) made fun of Quirrell's stutter, and he was a teacher. (Yes he was evil, and only pretending to have one, but they didn’t know that then.) How much worse would the teasing be for a first year student? So as her father told her, sometimes it’s better not to talk at all.
Harry doesn’t know any of this.
Before things really started in the fanfic, Harry’s one interaction with Daphne that really stood out to him was that time she was sarcastic to him in first year after his first Quidditch game: “You know my family made the snitches used at Hogwarts. Please try not to choke on another of them next time.” When fourth year started, she ignored him completely in the Great Hall, and didn’t help her friend in a way he didn’t recognize/understand.
The next day, Daphne sends him a note ordering him to meet her during lunch, after not acknowledging him in public. (As Harry says, she didn’t even write please. It also didn’t ask him for a date and time to talk, just told him to meet her in a specific location.) When he asked if she was proposing to date him, she “made a truly exasperated sounding noise” which definitely hurt his pride a little. She also tried to approach a relationship (not necessarily even a romantic relationship, just in general) with him, someone she has barely spoken to,  like a business deal, which he thinks is a cold way to look at it and he loses his temper. However, it should be noted that she asked him why when he rejected her out of hand and well, don’t ask a question you wouldn’t want an answer to.
Later on he sees her picking on a second year for seemingly no reason. In reality, this is a girl who did something to her sister and Daphne doesn’t let things like that slide when it comes to people she cares about.
Now afterwards things get murkier because Daphne is wanting to freeze him out/ignore him, but he is the one to poke at her. The soulmate bond is like an outside force that pushes down on two people to try and force them together, which can be downright unbearable if you really don’t like the other person. Harry finds the pressure it puts on them very hard and is stunned when she acts like she’s not affected at all. (He’d feel better if he knew she was feeling it just as much as him. Sort of like how Hermione and Ron both take comfort in the fact that Draco and Pansy are having as bad a time with the bond as they are.) He’s already under stress from the situation with his scar hurting and Sirius leaving his hideout to come back to England because of it, now add on to that the stress of an outside magical force trying to bond him to a girl he doesn't like and who doesn’t like him. No, he’s not handling it in a great way, but he’s young.
And Daphne could always try and talk to him about things good (sending him a song through the bond to help him sleep when worry for Sirius was keeping him up) and bad (the incident with the second year), but she doesn’t try. Partly it’s out of pride, but largely it’s because she’s developed unhealthy coping skills that she doesn’t realize are unhealthy.
About Ron in the Dramione Fandom
*Note: This is LONG and I understand if people don’t want to read all of it. So I wrote the parts that I think are important in bold [though they might not make much sense by themselves lol]. Also these are all just my opinions.*
I have recently been reawakened to the fiery hate that non-shippers and a considerable number of Romione shippers have towards Dramione, Drarry, and other non-canon-ships. While I understand people not liking Dramione due to the characters’ history and finding it difficult to see Draco as anything more than the bully and Death Eater that he was, I think part of it stems from the fact that there are a lot of Dramione shippers who ignore how Dramione is improbable if we were to go from canon material alone. And how a lot tend to blindly hate on Romione and openly ignore how Ron is actually a good character with flaws just like anyone else.
I see why non-Romione shippers don’t buy Romione [not being heavily focused on as a romantic sideplot, Hermione being hurt by Ron various times, etc.], but I‘m surprised how far some people have blown their anti-Ron arguments out of proportion. It’s different with Ron-bashing fics, since it’s more of a plot device than anything, and it isn’t reflective of how every Dramione shipper feels about Ron since I, amongst many, actually like him. Can I please get some opinions about where Ron stands in the DHr fandom?
Also, don’t people realize that if every fanfic adhered to canon or aren’t allowed to stray from it too far, it would narrow down the fics that could be considered ‘valid’? In ‘Dark!Harry or Hermione‘ fics we obviously have Dark!Harry or Hermione, and in ‘Wrong Boy-Who-Lived’ fics, Weasley, Potter, or Dumbledore bashing is a common element, but it doesn’t mean that those OOC portrayals are how its creators and readers see the characters.
That line is just thinner or downright nonexistent when it comes to Ron in some fics — which makes me wonder, as a Dramione lover, just how many Dramione shippers actually believe in or see Ron’s goodness. Not every single writer who’s written Ron-bashing fics hate Ron, and not every person who’s read and enjoyed them think that’s who Ron truly is — it’s just a part of his role in the story after all.
So this got me thinking…
Should more anti-Ron Dramione shippers strive to learn Ron’s character in canon better? They’re not obligated to like him, but at least recognize his positive traits and acknowledge that he isn’t purely his mistakes. I just feel like doing so could quell a fair portion [certainly not all] of the flames between Dramione shippers and non-shippers who are willing to understand. [If you can’t tell, I’m a sucker for the impossible — like peace between different ships in a fandom. I’ve given up on it tbh, but I entertain the thought occasionally.]
Of course, it’s completely impossible for the haters to change their minds about Dramione, but I hope that those who will listen know that not every Dramione fan blindly hates Ron, and that we know where Hermione, Ron, and Draco stand in canon. And hey! Dramione fans [Drarry, Ronsy, Pansmione etc. fans too ofc] simply love to imagine a Post-War world where those raised in extremely bigoted households have mended their beliefs, are trying to make up for their mistakes, and are coexisting happily with people from the Light! I don’t know about them, but to me that sounds like a pretty amazing and wonderful place [that Hermione would like to be a part of, but some aren’t acknowledging that]!
*Lastly: I know this long ramble was Ron-centric, but people do also assume that Hermione is always treated like a prize or Draco’s key to redemption, but that’s a whole other untrue assumption that would require its own essay to debunk. I don’t know if I should or want to write one lol.*
Thank you, Wondering Anon, for submitting the above post.
Lots of things to unpack in this ask! Some readers DO hate on Ron more because of fanon//what they’ve read in fanfiction than what’s in canon, but there are plenty of reasons to dislike Ron based on canon. But here’s the thing: how I feel about Ron has NOTHING to do with how I feel about Draco and vice-versa. I can point out the flaws in both of them and still think that Draco might be better for Hermione. Heck, based on Cursed Child alone, I think Draco would have been better for Hermione. But again, Ron and Draco aren’t connected. I don’t have to point out why Draco is better in order to think Romione was a terrible idea. I can think it was a poor match regardless of with whom I the fanfiction writer want to write her.
You asked “ Should more anti-Ron Dramione shippers strive to learn Ron’s character in canon better? They’re not obligated to like him, but at least recognize his positive traits and acknowledge that he isn’t purely his mistakes. “
I think a lot of us DO know who Ron is as a character, and we still don’t think he’s a good fit for Hermione. Anyone who has read the books with a discerning eye can appreciate the nuance and the layers. All of JK Rowling’s characters are grey. As Sirius said, “We’ve all got light and dark in us.” And that’s part of what makes writing them so much fun. BECAUSE the canon characters are so layered and written in so many shades of grey, you as a fanfiction writer can take them in a lot of different directions. I can come up with plausible reasons Draco might go dark and be evil. I can come up with plausible reasons for Hermione to do questionable things. I can come up with reasons why Ron might cheat on Hermione or make her feel bad about her career and her success because of his own insecurities - because the roots of it are there in canon.
It’s up to the writer to decide which characters they want to use and which canon characteristics they want to play up and expand upon in their story.
As someone else submitted, a Dramione story isn’t about Ron. It’s about Hermione and Draco and often about how they get together and fall in love. For post-war stories where the characters are adults, a writer may or may not want to re-hash everything that happened during the intervening years between the end of the war (when in canon it seemed like Romione would be a thing) and present day (discarding the epilogue), so they may choose to write in a Romione relationship that fell apart for a variety of reasons. They may slot him into the story as the ex who broke her heart because he was there in canon, and it offers readers a bridge from canon to the fanfiction story, but the story ultimately is not about him.
A Dramione story, especially a novel-length one, usually involves a lot of secondary or background characters, and how they are interpreted and used is entirely up to the author, even if it deviates from canon.
As an example: Lucius Malfoy. Now, I happen to like that pompous jerk, as I’m also a Lumione and a Lucissa shipper, but I know a lot of Dramione fans don’t care for him. In fact, the “evil Lucius” secondary character is part of MANY Dramione stories! The thing is, there’s NOTHING in canon to indicate that Lucius was EVER abusive to Draco. Regardless of his failings as a human being, Lucius Malfoy loved his child - even JKR acknowledges that the Malfoy family’s love for each other is their primary redeeming feature. Jason Isaacs himself decided to play up the role as a bully and bully Draco in the films. But he’s also the bad guy in a lot of Dramione stories. He’s written as abusive. I’ve seen him written as literally beating Draco or putting him under an imperius curse. I’ve seen him written as raping Hermione or doing whatever he can to keep Draco and Hermione apart.
Is that fair to his character? Not really, IMHO. However, I also acknowledge that in most stories, Dramione needs a foil. There needs to be someone trying to keep them apart or cause drama in their relationship.
In a lot of stories, that’s Ron. In some stories, it’s Astoria (as Draco’s canonical wife) or Pansy or Daphne or some other witch Draco’s been seeing. In some stories, it’s his parents or his father specifically who act as the foil. Lucius works because there’s a lot more bad than good shown about him in canon. Astoria works because she’s a total blank slate. Pansy was a ‘mean girl’ in canon, so she’s easy to turn into the antagonist. But again, the story isn’t usually about them - it’s about Dramione. As a writer, I can’t really fault anyone for not wanting to spend a lot of time and space delving deeply into the psyche of the character attempting to ruin my OTP.
If you as a reader happen to really love Ron but also ship Dramione, great! This fandom is huge, there’s room for everyone, and we are blessed with an abundance of stories. There are plenty of Dramione stories where Ron isn’t a character or where he’s written as more supportive of Draco and Hermione getting together.
Choose Me Instead II Draco Malfoy x Reader II Chapter 19 of 27: Cursed
Summary: Pretending to be in a relationship with Draco Malfoy to get back at your ex might have not been the smartest idea you ever had. Especially during your last year of Hogwarts where you should be focusing on exams and your future plans. However, you were just pretending. There was no way in hell you could actually catch feelings for someone like Malfoy. … Right?
CHOOSE ME INSTEAD MASTERLIST CHOOSE ME INSTEAD PLAYLIST
A/N: Better late than never lol! Here it is! Thank you for being patient though! ilysm <3 This was a difficult one, I hope you like it! Btw, I recently found out that Dracos mum is called “Narcissa” and not “Narzissa” in the english version. She’s called “Narzissa” in the German Books. However, I’ll keep calling her Narzissa in this story (because I’m lazy and don’t want to change it). Enjoy!
Words: 3.4k Pairing: Draco Malfoy x Reader, post war Warnings: tw eating disorder (mentions of it) --> please be aware that the way eating disorders are approached by the purebloods in this story is not something i (the author) approves of. I just thought it’d be a more realistic way for them to act like this.
It felt wrong.
Draco only used the Room of Requirements to be with you. He never went here on his own. Not that he would ever admit it – but the room scared him. The last time he’d been here alone was at the beginning of this school year. He found out then that it didn’t change for him anymore. All he saw when he walked in were the dirty, cracked windows and the flies and spiders that died in front of them. Old furniture, forgotten books and dirt was scattered around, piling up and towering over him.
As he stood there, his gaze was drawn to the end of the room. Hiding behind the corners, buried under black linen, there it was. The vanishing cabinet. He felt its presence. Looming, waiting, calling for him. Alright, to be fair, the last part was probably only in his imagination. It didn’t change his feelings towards this particular room of Hogwarts though.
It was different when you were with him. It changed for you and turned the monster that it was for Draco into a purring housecat. With you, it felt like a vacation. As if he had travelled to a small cottage, far away from roaring cities or ancient castles.
However tonight, you were not here. Astoria Greengrass had taken your place. She sat on a couch across from Draco, back straight, hands neatly folded in her lap. Her black hair was tied up in a bun and not a single strand of hair was out of place. The spitting image of her mother, Draco thought. He had always wondered about how different the Greengrass sisters looked. Astoria inherited the sharp features, thin lips, and slim figure of her mother. Daphne resembled their father a lot more with her round face, long blonde hair, and the doe-like eyes. The both of them were like night and day. Yin and Yang.
Draco looked around the room which had turned into a smaller version of the Slytherin common room. All the important details where there – from the green colors to the Slytherin emblems on the pillows and carpet. Only the windows were out of place. They didn’t offer him a view inside of the lake but were the same cracked ones, he had seen one too many times in his life. It reminded him that he wasn’t here with you.
It felt wrong.
 ***
Draco leaned back against the chair. He crossed his leg and his fingertips tapped a non-recognizable rhythm on his right upper thigh. Astoria didn’t look up at him when she spoke. He could tell that the words had been carefully chosen in advance. Remembered and recited in front of a mirror. Yet she couldn’t meet his eyes. Draco noticed the way she plucked at the skin on her thumb.
When you’d ask him tomorrow for how long the conversation went on, he wouldn’t have an answer. Time seemed to stand still the moment Astoria opened her mouth for the first time.
“Say something,” she whispered when she finished, and the silence became unbearable.
Draco noticed that there wasn’t a fireplace. Another thing that the Room of Requirement had gotten wrong.
“Say something,” Astoria repeated herself, her voice shaking a little more this time.
Draco stopped the tapping. “Is that why?”, he finally asked.
She hesitated and then nodded. Draco sighed and looked out of the window.
“I’m sorry,” he said after a while.
Astoria scoffed. “Me too.”
“I am,” he looked back at her.
For the first time since he had entered the room, Astoria lifted her head. When her eyes met his, he saw the anger in them. “I’m dying and all you have to say is ‘Sorry’?”, she spat out.
“You don’t know that,” Draco said matter-of-factly.
Astoria raised her eyebrows. “What?”
“That you’re dying.”
She looked at him as if he was a little slow in his head. “I … I just told you.”
“You told me about the family curse,” Draco corrected her. “No one can say if it will happen to you.”
She let out a huff, stunned by his reaction. Had he not listened to a word she said? “I told you about the clairvoyant at Knockturn Alley!”
“Seers say a lot of shit.” He shrugged and added: “Especially when you pay them.”
Astoria lost her posture – with wide eyes and a shake of her head, she let herself slump back against the pillows. “I can’t believe you’re not taking me seriously.”
Draco sighed and began tapping on his thigh again. The same rhythm from before. “I am, Astoria. I believe you.”
But I don’t want to, he added in his mind. He had heard rumors of the Greengrass curse before – only once, when he was maybe eight or nine years old and while he pretended to be asleep on an armchair, he listened to his mother and her friend.
“The poor woman,” Narzissa had said. “And those girls …”
“We don’t know if it will happen to them,” her friend replied softly.
“Why risk it though?”, he remembered his mother ask. “And decide to give birth to not only one but two girls?”
“Well, if one dies, she will still have the other.”
Looking back, the joke was tasteless and not the least bit funny. He didn’t remember how his mother responded to it. Back then, Draco didn’t understand what the women were talking about. So he had shoved the memory back and forgot – until tonight.
When Astoria came up to him at the Winter Dance, she was more … vague. Talking about how something had changed in her life, how decisions were made for her and that she was left with no option but to finally confine in him. Merlin, Draco had thought she was pregnant. This was worse – for obvious reasons.
“If you believe me, why are you like this?”, her voice ripped him from his thoughts. Draco hadn’t notice that he was staring out of the window again.
He cleared his throat and focused back on the Slytherin girl. “I believe you’re overexaggerating.” It was the truth. Or better – it was a truth. The one he was able to share with her.
“I’m dying.”
“You’re not!”, he replied with a sharp voice.
Astoria flinched.
Draco sighed and leaned forward. “Look,” he continued, much softer now. “I’m sorry. You’re obviously very scared of this – and honestly, who wouldn’t be after receiving such news.” He paused. “But didn’t you just say you never experienced any symptoms?”
She looked to the ground. “Yes.”
“See?”, a smile played around the corners of his lips. “Stop beating yourself up about it.”
Astorias gaze stuck to the ground. His words didn’t ease her pain, he saw that. “I … Look at me, Draco,” she then mumbled.
Draco tilted his head. “I am.”
“No, truly look at me!” She lifted her head. “What do you see?”
He stared at her for a while. What do you want me to say? He refrained himself from asking that. Instead, for the first time in years, he truly looked at her. Her school uniform was in perfect condition, no spot or loose thread in sight. The diamond earrings sparkled in the soft light and around her neck hung a delicate golden necklace. Her outer appearance was perfect. As always. The only thing that was different were her eyes. He frowned when he saw it. The fire in them. Gone. The arrogant spark, challenging every Ravenclaw and Gryffindor that didn’t get out of her way fast enough. He wondered when it had left her.
“I resemble a corpse! I swear, my grandmother had a better complexion than me on the day she died!”, Astoria continued after another minute of silence.
Oh. Draco blinked. She meant that? He wouldn’t have noticed that in a hundred years.
“And I’m so thin and –”
“Because you’re starving yourself,” Draco interrupted her and immediately scolded himself for it.
Astoria, who was in the middle of shifting to a different position, stopped, and stared at him. “What?”
Draco pondered for a moment about his next words. Astoria and her fucked up relationship towards food wasn’t a secret. Well, not since fourth grade when rumors started spreading about the true reasons of why she was always so eager to get to the nearest bathroom after meals. And then her bones began to stick out underneath her school uniform. Everyone noticed it. Everyone looked the other way.  Problems like hers … they weren’t uncommon among their circles. Yet, they were problems to keep to behind closed doors. They were private. Nothing to talk about.
“Everyone needs an outlet for the stress that comes with living like we do,” his father had once said. “Women are just worse in finding the right one.”
Oh, how he hated his father.
Draco smiled sadly at Astoria. “Everybody knows, Astoria.”
“Knows what?”, she asked sharply.
“That you have issues with food.”
Astoria blinked. “I … you’re such an asshole,” she then exclaimed. “You’re an asshole, Draco Malfoy.”
Draco sighed and shifted positions. “Anyways,” he tried to change the subject. “You’re scared, I get it. But so far, you don’t have any symptoms. In fact, you started feeling ill once your mother went with you to see the seer, right? It frightened you and now you can’t stop focusing on that fear.”
Astoria scoffed. “Thanks, Mr. Therapist. You’ve got it all figured out, haven’t you?”
“No,” he shook his head. “I’m just guessing. It doesn’t make sense to care so much about something that might not even happen to you.”
“Doesn’t make sense to you, you mean”, Astoria corrected him.
Draco frowned.
“Because your problems are much more important.”
“My problems are real.”
That was probably the wrong thing to say in this situation. Even Draco realized that. The words had just slipped out. He hated to admit it but the egocentric, narcissistic part of himself believed them.
Astoria stood up abruptly. She smoothed over the fabric of her skirt and tucked a strand of hair that had fallen out of her bun behind her ear. She then looked at him, no expression on her face. When she spoke, her voice was calm and quiet: “Fuck you.”
With long steps Astoria made her way towards the door.
“Shit,” Draco mumbled under his breath and got up as well. “Astoria!”
She didn’t turn around.
“Astoria, wait! Please!”
The last word made her stop, hand already reaching for the doorknob. As she turned around, there was a bitter smile playing around her dark red lips. “Why?”, she asked him. “I trusted you with something and all you’re giving me is shit.”
Draco looked down to the ground and then back up. “I don’t know how to respond to this.”
“With empathy, Draco,” she folded her arms in front of her chest. “You might want to look that word up.”
Draco let out another deep sigh. A part of him secretly wished she would ignore him and just leave. It would be easier for him. Knowing this wasn’t an option for her, he finally walked towards Astoria. He pulled her into his arms and hugged her tightly. His words had failed him, they had made everything worse for her and he hoped from the bottom of his heart that this would ease her pain just a little. Astorias body went stiff at first – only after a few seconds did she let her body relax. She leaned into his embrace as if someone took a weight off her shoulders.
“You know I’m here for you,” Draco whispered. “And I will be there in case …”
“In case, I’m dying after all.”
When Draco breathed in, he could smell her lavender shampoo. “Yes.”
Suddenly, her petite body began to tremble. At first Draco mistook it for giggling, then he heard the soft whimpers against his shoulder.
“It’ll be fine. I promise.” He hugged her tighter.
“You can’t promise me that,” she sniffed.
Draco let go of her and took a step back. He put a hand to her cheek, making her look at him. “The curse hasn’t been around for decades. It might skip your generation again.”
Her eyes were red and her cheeks puffy, silent tears running down them. “I’m so scared.”
“I know.”
“Please marry me.”
Draco closed his eyes at her plea. His head suddenly hurt and he wished you were here. You’d know how to handle situations like this.
“Astoria …”
“I know you don’t love me,” she interrupted him, her voice still trembling. “You couldn’t.”
He opened his eyes, looking at her in confusion. “What do you mean?”
“You love her.”
Her. You. Draco blinked. “What? No, I –”
“I realized it on New Years Eve.” She wiped the tears from her cheek, still holding on to him with her other hand. Astoria cleared her throat. “I didn’t believe it in the beginning but … it’s so obvious. You love her so much, how could I ever expect you to look at me the same way you look at her?”
Draco shook her head. “Astoria –”
“But you know the relationship has no future. Neither of your families would ever agree to it. You know it. You know it in your heart.”
The piercing pain in his forehead grew stronger. When he’d remember this moment, Draco wouldn’t be able to describe his feelings. Her words barely managed to get through to him. You love her, he heard her say over and over again. You love her.
No. He didn’t love you.
He couldn’t.
“Marry me,” Astoria repeated herself and took a step closer again. She had to lift her head to look into his eyes. “My family will secure the future of the Malfoys.”
“I …”
You love her. You love her. You love her.
“What do you get out of it?”, he finally managed to get out and tried to focus back on her, feeling weirdly out of breath.
Another tear rolled down her cheek. No sobs this time. “Once people will be able to see the sickness …”, she hesitated. “I won’t be looked at as the second daughter who’s living in her sister’s shadows.”
You love her.
Draco furrowed his brows at her words, utterly irritated by them. “Nobody thinks that, Astoria.”
She laughed. “Yes, they do! Daphne has always been prettier, smarter, more desired. I can’t compete with her. I am the leftover Greengrass that no one wants and that’s now dying from a family curse. Because of fucking course it would hit me and not my picture perfect sister!”
Draco stared at Astoria.
“But with you,” she continued. “With you people would see that I’m more than that. That I’m worthy of attention and of love despite … being me.”
This is wrong on so many levels, he could hear your voice in his head, clear as day.
“Have you met with the therapist yet?”, Draco suddenly asked out of the blue.
“What?” The Slytherin was thrown off by his question. “Yes.”
“Did you talk to her about this?”
Hearing this made her drop his hands, taking a few steps back. She buried her face in her hands, taking a deep breath. “Oh, fuck you, Draco!”, Astoria muttered. “Stop trying to analyze me!”
“I’m not!”, he assured her. “But … Astoria, this is so fucked up what you just said to me.”
She looked back up at him. “You’re such a hypocrite.”
“Excuse me?”
She chuckled. “You spent a few months with a Gryffindor and now you act like our values mean nothing to you when you are the one who used to scream ‘mudblood’ the loudest.”
Draco swallowed.
“Merlin, what is wrong with me,” Astoria sighed. “After everything I just confessed, you don’t find it in you to show me a little mercy and change your mind?” She smiled at him sadly. “Do you want to marry me?”
“No.”
You love her.
 ***
The talk with Astoria left him feeling uneasy.
It handed after she asked Draco to marry her a second time and he declined. She nodded when she heard his answer, sniffled, wiped the remaining tears away and left. Not without saying “You’ll change your mind sooner or later”. When she was gone, she didn’t take the anxiety with her. Draco had to deal with that on his own. Now, as he walked through the halls of the old castle, his steps were stiff, and he had deep lines between his eyebrows.
“Calm down, she has no symptoms,” he mumbled to himself as he turned another corner.
Yet.
What if he would be wrong after all? What if the curse wouldn’t skip another generation of Greengrass women and fall upon her? What if she would die and he made her last remaining years even more miserable in her eyes because he turned down the proposal?
What if, what if, what if.
He wanted to talk to you about all of it. You’d tell him he didn’t have to feel bad. He didn’t owe Astoria. He shouldn’t be put in this position in the first place. You would find the right words. To be honest, Draco knew all of this himself. He just wanted to hear you say it out loud. Hear the words from another person to ensure that he was right. That he wasn’t crazy or selfish for not sacrificing his life, his future, for a dying girl.
“She’s not dying,” he reminded himself. A Hufflepuff boy passed him and frowned.
“My family will secure the future of the Malfoys.” It was the argument his mother had used against him countless times. He was certain that he’d hear it a lot more often soon. He was aware of how strong the argument truly was. His family could return to their former glory with all the luxury that came along with it. Fancy parties, status, high-paying careers – something he had been promised his whole life and that was stripped away the moment he was forced to become a Death Eater. The promise of a good life. An easy life.
Maybe life shouldn’t be easy for them. At least not so fast. Maybe his father shouldn’t come home from Azkaban one day to live like nothing ever happened. No, Lucius Malfoy deserved to suffer longer than his time in prison. And ultimately, so did his mother and Draco.
Draco gritted his teeth at his thoughts. He couldn’t marry Astoria. Not for that reason. Not to make the life of his family easier. His parents needed to work and plea for their redemption. Just like he did.
“Watch it, Malfoy!”, Seamus Finnigan hissed when he bumped into him. He came out of the library, a stack of books in his arms.
Draco didn’t look at him. Until now, he hadn’t even noticed that he was walking towards the library. It made sense though. The bag that hung from his shoulder seemed to become heavier with every step. The black notebook. He needed to write.
 ***
You sat alone on a table, hunched over a book. More of them piled up next to you, accompanied by an overused quill and bottle of ink.
Exams, Draco remembered. How easy it was to forget those mundane things in the midst of all the sadness. Exams, followed by entrance tests to become an Auror. Draco smiled at the thought of you fighting evil. He was certain that you’d excel at it.
He stopped in the middle of the corridor, not caring about the annoyed huffs and curses from students who almost ran into him. He watched you. The way you sometimes licked the tip of your finger before turning a page. How you sighed and frowned when you didn’t understand a passage.
You love her. The words shot through his mind.
It was different to the scenes he had read in books when he finally saw it. When he blinked and it was suddenly so clear to him. His heart didn’t stop, his knees didn’t become weak, he didn’t hear violins around him. No, a ray of sunlight that fell through the window and hit your face, caused you to lift your head. In that moment, your eyes found his. A smile played around your lips as you waved at him and pointed at the seat next to you. And it was so clear to him, that he wanted this all along: to be with you. To come home to you.
You love her, Astoria had said.
And he knew she was right.
A/N: How did you like it?? I’m so excited to hear from you!! <33
⧼  barbie ferreira , demigirl, she/they   /   heaven in hiding - halsey +  bloody knees, dark shadows under eyes from sleepless nights, and moonless nights.   ⧽   ━━   hey, isn’t that MILLICENT BULSTRODE? i read a daily prophet article on them, once ; the TWENTY FOUR year old half blood WITCH is a SLYTHERIN alumnus who has gone on to be an AUROR. i’ve heard they can be quite DRIVEN & ADAPTABLE, but i don’t know… they came off very CRITICAL & STUBBORN in that interview. it really is hard to know what to believe these days though, isn’t it?
Tumblr media
name: millicent bulstrode  nickname: millie age: 24 blood status: halfblood house: slytherin patronus: adder wand: pine, dragon heartstring, 9 1/2 occupation: auror sexuality: pansexual pronouns: she/they
early years:
   Millicent grew up with a single muggle mother. She never knew her father. He was a pureblood and her mother knew that it was only a matter of time before her daughter started to show the same signs of magic that she knew her father had. Against her mother’s better judgement, Millie attended Hogwarts although it was never an easy thing.
Millie figured that maybe they’d be different than the kids that she grew up with going to muggle school but that was evidently a lie. Millie faced the same harsh commentary here that she did at home. Mess with the bull and you’ll get the horns. She heard many people say when they taunted her. Yes, it was true that Millie was not a small girl but that didn’t mean that she didn’t have feelings. Her first year, she was quiet and mostly found comfort in spending time with her black cat, Nyx.
 The more people teased her though, the rougher around the edges she became. Millie began to turn harsh and cold until she started to meet people’s taunts with punches. She knew she wasn’t pretty or small like most of the girls that attended school but she was going to make sure that she left her name somehow. People would know who she was and if that meant through threats and punches than so be it. Hermione Granger learned real fast how strong Millie could be without a wand.
It took Millie a while to be able to find herself and form her own friends. Pansy, Tracey, Daphne and Astoria became her small little family and from time to time she got along well with Blaise and Draco. Never Crabb or Goyle though. There were a few times that she had even butted heads with them and she made sure they never forgot not to call her names.
One thing that people need to know about Millie is that when she forms an attachment to someone-- one way or another, she is fiercely protective and loyal. She has always been a fire storm waiting to happen. She just needed the right spark and most of the time, people were unaware of how much anger the young girl held in her heart. Through the years however, Millie began to grow into her looks and become confident in who she was. A thing she thought may scare people.
  Millie knew that she needed to navigate herself a certain way because she was a halfblood although no one really ever asked and so she never really said anything. It wasn’t a secret, it was just never brought up. Millie never belittled anyone for their blood status because she knew she had no room to talk and she became incredibly over protective of any younger Slytherin student. It was not just enough to hear taunts about her weight but to also automatically be placed as a bad person because of your house? Well, she had to play the role to get where she wanted to be.
And so Millie did but no one knew who she really was behind the scenes. Millie watched and observed things no one was even aware of. She joined the Inquisitorial Squad although she wasn’t particularity in favor of it. She did what she had to do but Crabbe and Goyle almost let her secret slip and she is unaware of how they knew. Mudblood. Thankfully due to the way she conducted herself, no one believed them. Things were getting intense with the war looming over their heads and when Slytherin was instructed to head to the dungeons, Millie listened with the intent to make sure that the younger students were safe from harm before she returned to fight and that’s when loyalties were questioned and there was no denying it anymore and Millie fought and helped bring down Voldemort’s Death Eaters.
Harry Potter’s death didn’t really impact her. Even as just a teenager, Millie knew that war had a price and he paid it. She never blamed her own housemates from being afraid to come out because she knew that a lot of them may be facing their own family. She understood people’s fear and she understood that self preservation was one of their strongest traits. Millie was not one to judge. It was not her place, after all, she had done horrid things herself.
After The War:
Shortly after the war, Kingsley Shacklebolt permitted any of-age participants in the Battle of Hogwarts to become an Auror immediately if they were interested. Millie didn’t hesitate. A month after, Millie sat next to Fay Dunbar in the Auror’s Office where she received many looks of skepticism but Millie knew she didn’t need anyone to vouch for her and she didn’t need anyone’s approval. She continues to be a valuable asset to the Aurors and her mother still doesn’t know of her participation in the war. She figures it’s better that way. Although, Millie no longer denies that she is a halfblood because in her eyes, that shouldn’t even matter. She’s proven her abilities and she is not afraid of anyone anymore.
